Argumentation as the public exchange of reasons is widely thought to enhance deliberative interactions that generate and justify reasonable public policies. Adopting an argumentation-theoretic perspective, we survey the norms that should govern public argumentation and address some of the complexities that scholarly treatments have identified. Our focus is on norms associated with the ideals of correctness and participation as sources of a politically legitimate deliberative outcome. In principle, both ideals are mutually coherent. If the information needed for a correct deliberative outcome is distributed among agents, then maximising participation increases information diversity. But both ideals can also be in tension. If participants lack competence or are prone to biases, a correct deliberative outcome requires limiting participation. The central question for public argumentation, therefore, is how to strike a balance between both ideals. Multiple sources must be consulted to determine the most appropriate procedures for the laboratory-based performance evaluation of aqueous oral inhaled products (OIPs) for the primary measures, dose uniformity/delivery, and aerodynamic particle (droplet) size distribution (APSD). These sources have been developed at different times, mainly in Europe and North America, during the past 25 years by diverse organizations, including pharmacopeial chapter/monograph development committees, regulatory agencies, and national and international standards bodies. As a result, there is a lack of consistency across all the recommendations, with the potential to cause confusion to those developing performance test methods. We have reviewed key methodological aspects of source guidance documents identified by a survey of the pertinent literature and evaluated the underlying evidence supporting their recommendations for the evaluation of these performance measures. We have also subsequently developed a consistent series of solutions to guide those faced with the various associated challenges when developing OIP performance testing methods for oral aqueous inhaled products. Electron density measured at high latitudes by the Swarm satellites is compared with the measurements by the RISR incoherent scatter radars as the satellites fly by the radars' field of views near Resolute Bay, Canada between 2014 and 2019. More than 200 satellite passes crossing multiple radar beams are considered. Overall, the Swarm-based electron densities are smaller than those measured by the radars by ∼30%. The values are closer to one another at electron densities between 3 10 10 and 15 1010 3 m, corresponding to plasma frequencies between 1.5 and 3.5 MHz. Swarm-measured values are getting progressively smaller than those measured by radars at larger electron densities/plasma frequencies. For the entire range of measured electron densities, the slope of the best fit linear line to the data expressed in terms of electron density is ∼0.62 and offset is 2 1010 3 m. A microfluidics applicator is used in the fabrication of a polyfluorene based polymer light emitting diode (PLED). This procedure results in a single contiguous polymer trace and, as a consequence of the high deposition speed, shows unusual characteristics in both the film morphology and polymer microstructure. These aspects are studied using fluorescence microscopy, profilometry, and optical absorption and emission spectroscopies. Room temperature analysis of the poly(di-n-octylfluorene) indicates that the combination of high-speed deposition and rapid drying process traps the polymer into a metastable conformational state. Optical spectroscopy at reduced temperature identifies emission from at least two distinct conformational chromophores. At elevated temperature there is an abrupt, irreversible transition to a more conventional structural form. Electroluminesence data from PLED test devices are shown and this demonstrates some of the unique opportunities afforded by this method of polymer film formation and device fabrication. We present a unified model for thin film epitaxy where single crystal films with small and large lattice misfits are grown by domain matching epitaxy (DME). The DME involves matching of lattice planes between the film and the substrate having similar crystal symmetry. In this framework, the conventional lattice matching epitaxy becomes a special case where a matching of lattice constants or the same planes is involved with a small misfit of less than 7%-8%. In large lattice mismatch systems, we show that epitaxial growth of thin films is possible by matching of domains where integral multiples of major lattice planes match across the interface. We illustrate this concept with atomic-level details in the TiN/Si(100) with 3/4 matching, the AlN/Si(100)with 4/5 matching, and the ZnO/α-Al[sub 2]O[sub 3] (0001) with 6/7 matching of major planes across the film/substrate interface. By varying the domain size, which is equal to intregral multiple of lattice planes, in a periodic fashion, it is possible to accommodate additional misfit beyond perfect domain matching. Thus, we can potentially design epitaxial growth of films with any lattice misfit on a given substrate with atomically clean surfaces. In situ x-ray diffraction studies on initial stages of growth of ZnO films on sapphire correctly identify a compressive stress and a rapid relaxation within 1 to 2 monolayers, consistent with the DME framework and the fact that the critical thickness is less than 1 monolayer. DME examples ranging from the Ge-Si/Si(100) system with 49/50 matching (2% strain) to metal/Si systems with ½ matching (50% strain) are tabulated, strategies for growing strain-free films by engineering the misfit to be confined near the interface are presented, and the potential for epitaxial growth of films with any lattice misfit on a given substrate with atomically clean surfaces is discussed. The behaviour of a SiC-fibre-reinforced composite with a graded matrix was investigated in an arc jet facility. The graded matrix was comprised of several layers of silicon carbide that transition to a mixed SiC-HfB2 top layer and was sealed with an HfB2-SiC coating. Samples were exposed to maximum specific total enthalpy hypersonic flow between 14 and 17 MJ kg−1 under stagnation pressures between 2700 and 3050 Pa for hold times of between 137 and 395 s. The resulting sample surface temperatures ranged between 1600 and 1950°C. Spectral emissivity at about 1 μm was calculated using a pyrometer capable of switching between one and two color modes and was shown to decrease with oxidation and removal of SiO2 from the surface. Hi-Nicalon™-S SiC fibers were oxidized in Si(OH)4 saturated steam at 500° to 1500°C for 1 - 100 hours. Fiber tensile strengths were measured for fibers that retained reasonable strength, which did not include any fibers oxidized at temperatures over 1000°C. Oxidation and scale crystallization kinetics were characterized by optical and transmission electron microscopy. At 700°C and higher, if SiO2 glass scales got too thick they often dewetted the SiC fibers and would spheroidize. SiO2 glass wicked to the spheroids as fast as it formed on the dewetted SiC surface, causing faster oxidation. SiO2 crystallization to cristobalite began after 100 h at 700°C, but some glass scales were still present after 1 h oxidation at 1400°C. Cristobalite scale that formed as glass before crystallizing was relatively coarse-grained, and scale that formed as cristobalite was fine-grained. Grain growth at 1500°C was inferred to consume fine-grained scale, and formed grains with size comparable to the scale thickness. SiO2 scale crystallization, microstructure evolution, and the interaction between microstructure evolution and oxidation kinetics are discussed. Objectives - To assess the effects of treatment with preadjusted edgewise appliances on the buccolingual inclination of mandibular canines and the intercanine distance. Setting and Sample Population - The Division of Orthodontics at the University of Minnesota. Thirty patients whose treatment included extraction of mandibular first premolars and 30 patients whose treatment did not include extractions. Material and Methods - The buccolingual inclination of mandibular canines and their linear distance were measured on cone beam computed tomograms before and after treatment in both patient groups. Differences between extraction and non-extraction groups and between pre- and post-treatment measurements were tested for statistical significance, and the correlation between the buccolingual inclination and the intercanine distance was computed. Results - Post-treatment, the buccolingual inclination of mandibular canines was significantly greater in the non-extraction group than in the extraction group. In both groups, the canines became more lingually inclined with treatment (non-extraction group: -2.1°; extraction group: -4.1°). The intercanine distance increased significantly in the extraction group (+1.2 mm) but not in the non-extraction group (-0.5 mm). While there was a significant positive correlation between the buccolingual inclination and the mandibular intercanine distance in both groups before treatment, after treatment this correlation was significant only in the non-extraction group. Conclusion - Orthodontic treatment with preadjusted edgewise appliances results in more lingually inclined mandibular canines together with an increased intercanine distance, especially in patients whose treatment involves the extraction of mandibular first premolars. Background Fluorescence confocal mosaicing microscopy is an emerging technology for rapid imaging of nuclear and morphological detail directly in excised tissue, without the need for frozen or fixed section processing. Basal cell carcinomas ( BCCs) can be detected with high sensitivity and specificity in Mohs excisions with this approach. For translation to clinical trials and towards potentially routine implementation, a new and faster approach called strip mosaicing confocal microscopy was recently developed. Objectives To perform a preliminary assessment of fluorescence strip mosaicing confocal microscopy for detecting skin cancer margins in Mohs excisions. Methods Tissue samples from 17 Mohs cases were imaged in the form of strip mosaics. Each mosaic was divided into two halves (submosaics) and graded by a Mohs surgeon and a dermatologist who were blinded to the pathology. The 34 submosaics were compared with the corresponding Mohs pathology. Results The overall image quality was excellent for resolution, contrast and stitching in the 34 submosaics. Components of normal skin including the epidermis, dermis, dermal appendages and subcutaneous tissue were easily visualized. The preliminary measures of sensitivity and specificity were both 94% for detecting skin cancer margins. Conclusions The new strip mosaicing approach represents another advance in confocal microscopy for imaging of large areas of excised tissue. Strip mosaicing may enable rapid assessment of BCC margins in fresh excisions during Mohs surgery and may serve as an adjunct to frozen pathology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Synthesis Prediction and management of species responses to climate change is an urgent but relatively young research field. Therefore, climate change ecology must by necessity borrow from other fields. Invasion ecology is particularly well-suited to informing climate change ecology because both invasion ecology and climate change ecology address the trajectories of rapidly changing novel systems. Here we outline the broad range of active research questions in climate change ecology where research from invasion ecology can stimulate advances. We present ideas for how concepts, case-studies and methodology from invasion ecology can be adapted to improve prediction and management of species responses to climate change. A major challenge in this era of rapid climate change is to predict changes in species distributions and their impacts on ecosystems, and, if necessary, to recommend management strategies for maintenance of biodiversity or ecosystem services. Biological invasions, studied in most biomes of the world, can provide useful analogs for some of the ecological consequences of species distribution shifts in response to climate change. Invasions illustrate the adaptive and interactive responses that can occur when species are confronted with new environmental conditions. Invasion ecology complements climate change research and provides insights into the following questions: 1) how will species distributions respond to climate change? 2) how will species movement affect recipient ecosystems? And 3) should we, and if so how can we, manage species and ecosystems in the face of climate change? Invasion ecology demonstrates that a trait-based approach can help to predict spread speeds and impacts on ecosystems, and has the potential to predict climate change impacts on species ranges and recipient ecosystems. However, there is a need to analyse traits in the context of life-history and demography, the stage in the colonisation process (e.g. spread, establishment or impact), the distribution of suitable habitats in the landscape, and the novel abiotic and biotic conditions under which those traits are expressed. As is the case with climate change, invasion ecology is embedded within complex societal goals. Both disciplines converge on similar questions of 'when to intervene?' and 'what to do?' which call for a better understanding of the ecological processes and social values associated with changing ecosystems. The ability to study the structure, microstructure and evolution of materials with increasing spatial resolution is fundamental to achieving a full understanding of the underlying science of materials. Polychromatic three-dimensional X-ray microscopy (3DXM) is a recently developed nondestructive diffraction technique that enables crystallographic phase identification, determination of local crystal orientations, grain morphologies, grain interface types and orientations, and in favorable cases direct determination of the deviatoric elastic strain tensor with submicrometre spatial resolution in all three dimensions. With the added capability of an energy-scanning incident beam monochromator, the determination of absolute lattice parameters is enabled, allowing specification of the complete elastic strain tensor with three-dimensional spatial resolution. The methods associated with 3DXM are described and key applications of 3DXM are discussed, including studies of deformation in single-crystal and polycrystalline metals and semiconductors, indentation deformation, thermal grain growth in polycrystalline aluminium, the metal-insulator transition in nanoplatelet VO2, interface strengths in metal-matrix composites, high-pressure science, Sn whisker growth, and electromigration processes. Recent studies have shown the possibility of exploiting the eddy current (EC) method for nondestructive characterization of near-surface residual stresses in surface-treated nickel-base superalloy components. The method involves measuring swept frequency EC signals to obtain near-surface electrical conductivity depth profiles, which can be converted into residual stress profiles using the empirical piezoresistivity relationship. However, the relationship between EC responses and residual stress profiles appears to depend on the microstructure. This paper reports on a systematic study of microstructural effects on the EC responses and near-surface conductivity deviation profiles induced by shot peening, using a series of heat-treated Inconel 718 samples with different secondary phase contents and thus a variety of hardness levels. Calibrated EC signals from 100 kHz to 50 MHz were measured from aged and unaged samples, before and after shot peening at various Almen intensities. Strong dependence of the EC responses on the sample hardness and microstructure has been observed. A procedure is introduced to convert the EC signals into shot-peening-induced conductivity deviation profiles where the microstructure dependency is suppressed. The resulting estimates of the conductivity changes are larger than expected, indicating that characterization of shot-peening-induced residual stresses by EC requires further understanding of the material responses beyond the empirical piezoresistivity relationship. Beiraghi S, Leon-Salazar V, Larson BE, John MT, Cunningham ML, Petryk A, Lohr JL. Craniofacial and intraoral phenotype of Robinow syndrome forms. Robinow syndrome (RS) is a rare genetic condition with two inheritance forms, autosomal dominant RS (DRS) and autosomal recessive RS (RRS). The characteristic features of this syndrome overlap in both inheritance forms, which make the clinical differential diagnosis difficult, especially in isolated cases. The objective of this study was to identify differences in the craniofacial and intraoral phenotype of patients with DRS and RRS. The characteristics and frequency of 13 facial and 13 intraoral clinical features associated with both DRS and RRS were assessed by direct dysmorphology examination and using a digital photographic analysis in 12 affected subjects. Although the phenotypic presentation varied and overlapped in the two forms of the syndrome, there were differences in the severity of the craniofacial and intraoral features. The craniofacial dysmorphology of RS was more severe in RRS. Nasal anomalies were the most frequent craniofacial features in both DRS and RRS. In contrast, intraoral features such as wide retromolar ridge, alveolar ridge deformation, malocclusion, dental crowding and hypodontia were more severe in patients with DRS. Overall, facial characteristics appeared less pronounced in adult subjects compared to younger subjects. Craniofacial and intraoral findings are highly variable in RS, with abnormalities of the intraoral structures being more prominent in the DRS form. We propose that the difference in the alveolar ridge deformation pattern and severity of other intraoral characteristics could enhance the differential diagnosis of the two forms of this syndrome.
