Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of civil engineering structures is experiencing an increasing progress in the last decades. The present work focuses on the static behavior of a highway bridge due to environmental temperature effects. The goal of the present study was to test the applicability of the satellite-based synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) for deformation monitoring of a large, curved highway bridge and to compare the obtained results with alternative measurement techniques like classical geodesy surveying and with an advanced computer simulation. Such a comparison is quite rare and provides an important insight into the accuracy, efficiency and limitations of the InSAR technique in the context of SHM. Especially interesting was the question whether the InSAR technique is suitable for blind monitoring of a cluster of bridges in the region of interest. The present study shows that a pre-knowledge about each structure can be very important for a reliable interpretation of the InSAR measurement results. The second challenge of the study was to overcome several objective difficulties of combining and comparing quite different monitoring techniques that result from different sampling rates, measurement points and other specific features and sensitivities. Nevertheless, a suitable approach has been developed and implemented in the present study for the InSAR and total station measurements, providing new results and important knowledge about novel SHM techniques. Use of β-blockers is associated with a reduced risk of fractures in middle-aged and older subjects from the general population. The present prospective population-based study investigated the association between use of β-blockers and incidence of any fracture. The study was based on 1,793 persons 55 to 74 years of age who participated in one of the three MONICA Augsburg surveys between 1984 and 1995. Subjects were without any fracture at baseline. Incident fractures were assessed using a health questionnaire. Hazard ratios (HRs) were estimated from Cox proportional hazard models. During a mean follow-up of 10.7 years, there occurred 263 incident fractures. β-blocker users were older, were significantly more likely to be obese, to drink no alcohol, to have hypertension or diabetes, to use thiazides and statins, and to be physically inactive. The use of β-blockers was associated with a lower risk of any fracture (HR 0.57; 95% CI = 0.36–0.90) after adjustment for age, sex and survey. Further adjustment for body mass index and education years only slightly attenuated the relationship (HR 0.60; 95% CI = 0.38–0.95) and additional adjustment for a variety of further risk factors did not attenuate the association (HR 0.60; 95% CI = 0.37–0.96). Objective: To investigate the kinetics of myocardial engraftment of bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells (BMNCs) after intracoronary injection using 99mTc-d,I-hexamethylpropylene amine oxime (99mTc-HMPAO) nuclear imaging in patients with acute and chronic anterior myocardial infarction. Design: Nuclear imaging-derived tracking of BMNCs at 2 and 20 h after injection in the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery. Setting: Academical cardiocentre. Patients: Five patients with acute (mean (SD) age 58 (11) years; ejection fraction range 33-45%) and five patients with chronic (mean (SD) age 50 (6) years; ejection fraction range 28-34%) anterior myocardial infarction. Interventions: A total of 24.2 × 108-57.0 × 108 BMNCs (20% labelled with 700-1000 MBq 99mTcHMPAO) were injected in the LAD coronary artery. Results: At 2 h after BMNC injection, myocardial activity was observed in all patients with acute (range 1.31 - 5.10%) and in all but one patient with chronic infarction (range 1.10-3.0%). At 20 h, myocardial engraftment was noted only in three patients with acute myocardial infarction, whereas no myocardial activity was noted in any patient with chronic infarction. Conclusions: Engraftment of BMNCs shows dynamic changes within the First 20 h after intracoronary injection. Since its launch in 2001 by VAI and vatron, the MoldExpert monitoring system has been installed on 15 strands and units for a further 22 strands are on order. Operational experience has proved that in critical situations, the breakout prevention system has avoided costly repairs and maintained production. MoldExpert data can be integrated into the overall automation system and be made available in both time and length sequences. Complex relations, which are useful for improving the casting process, can be elucidated. The ongoing development of the process models is reviewed, special focus being given to the prediction of longitudinal surface cracks, based on thermal and frictional behaviour in the mould. Numerical analysis is used to gain information on the spray propagation and mixture formation in tumble guided gasoline direct injection (DI) engines. In order to achieve reliable predictions an atomization model for high-pressure swirl injectors is described and verified by comparison to experimental data. The approach is capable of adequately predicting the most important effects, such as nozzle orifice diameter, cone angle or injection pressure on spray development. Furthermore, it is found that the pre-jet generated at the beginning of the injection strongly affects the overall spray development. The temporal development of the pre-jet is described empirically. The in-cylinder computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis reveals that the tumble charge motion strongly affects spray propagation and mixture formation in the stratified operation mode, as it transports the fuel vapour cloud towards the spark plug. The CFD simulation improves understanding of the interaction between the flow field, spray propagation and evaporation and enables guidance of the optimization of the flow control and of the injection parameters for tumble guided gasoline DI engines. Purpose: With regard to the poor prognosis of patients with glioblastoma multiforme, the aspect of life quality with a minimal treatment time becomes essential. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate whether the results of a radiotherapy schedule using increased single fractions applied over a shortened treatment time is feasible without compromising treatment efficiency or providing more side effects than a conventionally fractionated treatment.Patients and Methods: A total of 38 patients (f = 21, m = 17, mean age 58 years) with histologically proven glioblastoma multiforme were irradiated after (partial) resection (n = 29) or stereotactic surgery (n = 9) with single doses of 3.5 Gy (ICRU) 5 fractions a week up to a total dose of 42 Gy following individual treatment planning.Results: Median survival was 45.7 weeks, survival rate after 6 months was 80.9% and decreased to 34.2% after 12 months. Radiotherapy was tolerated without any important acute toxicity or any late side effects during the follow-up period.Conclusions: The increase of the dose per fraction using a fraction size of 3.5 Gy enhanced neither acute nor late toxicity. The survival rate compared well to those described in the literature. Thus the shortened treatment schedule seems as efficient as conventional radiotherapy. Indium selenide thin films have been grown on p-type gallium selenide single crystal substrates by van der Waals epitaxy. The use of two crucibles in the growth process has resulted in indium selenide films with physical properties closer to these of bulk indium selenide than those prepared by other techniques. The optical properties of the films have been studied by electroabsorption measurements. The band gap and its temperature dependence are very close to those of indium selenide single crystals. The width of the fundamental transition, even if larger than that of the pure single crystal material, decreases monotonously with temperature. Exciton peaks are not observed even at low temperature, which reveals that these layers still contain a large defect concentration. The current–voltage characteristic of indium selenide thin film devices was measured under simulated AM2 conditions. The solar conversion efficiency of these devices is lower than 0.6%. The high concentration of defects reduces the diffusion length of minority carriers down to values round to 0.2 μm. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
