Breast cancer (BC) is the leading cause of cancer death among women worldwide, making the discovery and quantification of new biomarkers essential for improving diagnostic and preventive strategies to limit dissemination and improve prognosis. Essential trace metals such as Fe, Cu, and Zn may play critical roles in the pathophysiology of both benign and malignant breast tumors. However, due to the high metabolic activity and reduced element selectivity of cancer cells, also non-essential elements may be taken up and may even be implicated with disease progression. This study investigates the spatial distribution and concentrations of both essential and non-essential elements in breast tissues, assessing their potential for diagnostic applications. Laser ablation (LA)–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) with a time-of-flight (ToF) mass analyzer (LA-ICP-ToF–MS) was used to inquire the distribution of almost all elements across the periodic table and their abundance in metastatic (n = 11), non-metastatic (n = 7), and healthy (n = 4) breast tissues. Quantification was achieved using gelatine-based standards for external calibration to quantitatively map various elements. Overall, the Fe, Cu, Zn, Sr, and Ba levels were significantly increased in tumor samples with Sr and Ba showing strong correlation, likely due to their similar chemistry. Comparison of calibrated LA-ICP-ToF–MS data with a histologic staining demonstrated the possibility to clearly differentiate between various tissue types and structures in breast tissues such as tumor niche and stroma. The levels of the studied elements were significantly higher in the tumor niche areas compared to the stroma, and for Fe, a significant accumulation was observed in the tumor niche areas from the metastatic patient group relative to the levels found in the same areas of the non-metastatic group. Context: The effectiveness of using shell microchemistry methods for reconstructing the pelagic dispersal of shell-forming marine organisms relies on the existence of sufficient spatial variability and temporal stability in the microchemical composition of coastal waters. Aims: This study aimed to determine whether shell microchemistry methods can reliably infer pelagic dispersal of green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) across a large and well-mixed embayment in New Zealand. Methods: Isotopes of 12 chemical elements (7Li, 27Al, 59Co, 60Ni, 63Cu, 66Zn, 88Sr, 138Ba, 139La, 140Ce, 208Pb and 238U) were assessed from juvenile mussel shells grown in situ from 22 sites for two consecutive periods of ~5 weeks. Key results: There was sufficient spatial variability in measured shell element concentrations to support microchemical atlases that are capable of distinguishing among regions within this large embayment, with 73% assignment accuracy. However, the temporal variability in the microchemical signatures is such that they would need to be sampled contemporaneously with animal samples to be effective for distinguishing pelagic dispersal of mussels in the embayment. Conclusions: The shell microchemistry shows sufficient spatio-temporal resolution for reliably inferring pelagic dispersal of this economically and ecologically important mussel species over a large embayment. Sufficient resolution at such large scale may come from unique hydro-geological inputs. Implications: This study confirms the feasibility of shell microchemistry method in tracking pelagic dispersal of marine organisms across a large well-mixed embayment, offering insights to improve accuracy and reduce costs for future research. The unconformity-related uranium (URU) deposits in the Proterozoic Athabasca Basin are one of the most important U resources in the world. This type of U deposit can be divided into monometallic (U) and polymetallic (U-Ni-Co-As) subtypes. While it is generally agreed that the URU deposits formed from reaction between oxidizing, basinal brines carrying U and/or Ni-Co-As with reducing basement fluids or lithologies, it is debatable whether the polymetallic deposits formed from co-enrichment of U-Ni-Co-As or enrichment of U superimposed by a separate Ni-Co-As mineralization event. This study addresses this problem through mineralogical, geochemical and fluid inclusion investigation of the Midwest U-Ni-Co-As deposit. Petrographic studies indicate that the sequence of ore precipitation started with uraninite, followed by Ni-Co arsenides and sulfoarsenides and then Cu-Pb-Fe sulfides, and this sequence was repeated episodically. This observation suggests that the deposit did not form from two separate U and Ni-Co-As mineralization events, but rather multiple episodes of U-Ni-Co-As mineralization. Linear correlations between chemical ages and Si-Ca-Fe contents of the most pristine uraninite U1 suggest a maximum primary mineralization of ca. 1600 Ma, which is consistent with the inferred primary U mineralization age in the Athabasca Basin. Microthermometric and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses of fluid inclusions in syn-mineralization drusy quartz indicate that the composition of the ore-forming fluids is characterized by the H2O-NaCl-CaCl2-KCl-MgCl2 system and comparable to those from both monometallic and polymetallic URU deposits. The relationship between U and Ni + Co in the fluid inclusions and its comparison with other URU deposits support a model in which U and Ni-Co were co-enriched in a unified mineralization process. The development of breccia structures in the ores and the dramatic fluid pressure fluctuation revealed by fluid inclusions suggest that the deposit formed from multiple episodes of fluid flow related to repeated reactivation of basement-rooted faults. Chemical fingerprinting and spectrophotometry were combined to conduct a provenance analysis of radiolarite artefacts from three Moravian (Czech Republic) Aurignacian sites of Tvarožná I, Nová Dědina I and Milovice I. Of the different methods used, laser ablation with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) was the best suited to distinguish the different areas containing radiolarite outcrops. Based on their chemical fingerprint, Moravian Aurignacian radiolarite artefacts were most likely imported from the western Slovak part of the Pieniny Klippen Belt. The abundant radiolarite outcrops in the Vienna region were apparently ignored, with the possible exception of two radiolarite artefacts from the Milovice I site. However, these could also have been manufactured from gravel radiolarites found around the site. Upon assigning other lithologies from Aurignacian sites in Moravia to their areas of provenience, it transpired those imports derived primarily from non-south-western regions. A similar situation was previously observed in the Moravian Szeletian, possibly indicating information exchange between the two Upper Palaeolithic cultures. Although the subsequent Gravettian culture relied more on long-distance imports, north-eastern − south-western movements and transfers were predominant up until the end of the Moravian Upper Palaeolithic, largely due to the communication corridor of the Moravian Gate. Upper Palaeolithic Moravia was an important source of raw materials and a hub for gathering other materials and information from concrete supply zones, while others were neglected. Magmatic hydrothermal deposits are important sources of many bulk, precious, and rare metals, and have attracted interest from both academic and industrial communities. However, it is still unclear if the major enrichment of the ore-forming metals occurs in the parental magma source region, during the magma evolution, or after the fluid exsolution. Fluid inclusions trapped in hydrothermal minerals crystallized in the early, high-temperature stage before metal precipitation record information close to that of the initially exsolved magmatic fluids, which are helpful in revealing whether the metals have been already significantly enriched prior to the hydrothermal stage. In this study, available compositional data of such early-stage fluid inclusions from magmatic hydrothermal systems globally have been compiled. The results indicate that the concentrations of Cu, Sn, and W respectively from the Cu-, Sn-, and W-mineralized fluids are significantly higher than the hydrothermal systems that do not produce ores with the corresponding metals. This suggests that Cu, Sn, and W could have already been enriched in the magma source and/or magma evolution stage. The Mo concentrations show no difference between Mo-mineralized and Mobarren fluid systems, indicating no significant pre-enrichment in the source region or during the magma evolution. This also implies that an efficient collection of Mo from a large volume of magmas is required to account for the formation of a large Mo deposit. Almost all the hydrothermal fluids contain high concentrations of Fe and Zn-Pb, but only a few of them eventually form Fe or Zn-Pb deposits, reflecting an important role of the hydrothermal evolution process on the selective metal mineralization. The above results indicate that different metals are enriched in different stages of a magmatic hydrothermal system, and that the major roles played in the formation of a deposit vary with the metal types. In addition to the metal concentrations in the ore-related magmas and fluids, other factors (including but not limited to the intrusion shapes, emplacement depths, structural pathways, and wallrock properties) are also critical in determining the fertility and mineralization diversity of a magmatic hydrothermal system. Eclogite‐facies rocks provide important constraints on the behaviour of convergent plate boundaries and the geometries of tectonic reconstructions due to the high to ultrahigh pressure conditions at which they form. Many eclogite occurrences are documented near the suture zone of active collisional settings where they are interpreted to mark the approximate location of former ocean basin subduction. Such observations influence tectonic interpretations for older eclogites within more deeply eroded and/or less well‐exposed terranes. The eclogitic Glenelg inlier in northwest Scotland is one such example, with c. 1 Ga eclogites having previously been interpreted as marking the trace of a Grenville‐aged collisional suture zone that defines a third 'arm' to the Grenville orogen alongside well‐defined sutures in North America and Scandinavia. Here we use a combination of geochronology, phase equilibrium modelling and accessory‐phase thermometry to show that the eclogite‐facies assemblages were produced at ∼$$ \sim $$18–19 kbar and 700°C–750°C from c. 1.1 to 1.0 Ga. Accounting for the foreland basin setting of equivalent‐aged sedimentary rocks in the region and demonstrating the thermal viability of this setting, we show that eclogite formation occurred in deforming foreland crust adjacent to the Grenville orogen, in a setting broadly analogous to fault‐bounded basement uplifts in the forelands of active deformation belts, such as the Himalayas and Andes. Our results demonstrate that eclogite‐facies rocks can form in a greater range of tectonic settings than are sometimes considered, with implications for tectonic reconstructions of collisional zones. In this instance, our results remove the need for a third 'arm' of the Grenville orogen by placing Glenelg in a foreland setting, reconciling the absence of plentiful Grenville‐aged metamorphic rocks in northwest Scotland, the sedimentological record and paleomagnetic data in the wider region. Trace element analysis of otoliths from core to edge was used to reveal differences in habitats of larvae and early juveniles of Japanese jack mackerel (Trachurus japonicus) caught in the East China Sea (ECS), Pacific Ocean, and Sea of Japan. Multi‐element signatures (Sr:Ca, Mg:Ca, Na:Ca, K:Ca, and Ba:Ca) were analyzed with multivariate statistics to determine whether these element signatures provide insight into regional population structure. The median values of elements: Ca ratios in otolith core region differed significantly among areas, with most elements between the ECS and the Pacific Ocean or Sea of Japan showing significant differences. The Sr:Ca ratios exhibited a V‐shaped trend from the otolith core to the edge, which was likely related to the vertical habitat layer shift of larvae and early juveniles of T. japonicus. Canonical analysis of principal coordinates using the element: Ca ratios and the hatching day were re‐classified according to the sampling area with higher accuracy in the ECS (88–95%) and the Sea of Japan (76–83%) compared to the Pacific Ocean (69–72%). These results indicate that the proportion of eggs, larvae, and early juveniles transported by the Kuroshio Current from the southern ECS—the main spawning ground—to the Pacific Ocean or the Sea of Japan is low and that juveniles distributed in the coastal waters off southwestern Japan may have originated from local spawners. These results suggest that determining the elemental composition of larvae and juveniles of T. japonicus is effective in determining the habitat differences of this species in the three regions. Garnet U‐Pb dating by laser ablation‐inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry requires the development of matrix‐matched reference materials of variable chemistry and U mass fraction for accurate analysis. Additional calibration of existing primary reference materials is also justified based on the relatively poor calibration of some of the widely available primary reference materials that are currently utilised by the geoscience community. We present a micro sampling workflow combined with a refined ID‐TIMS methodology for the generation of high precision (~ 0.1%) U‐Pb dates from domains within garnet single crystals. Using this workflow, we calibrated two new natural andradite reference materials, the Jumbo andradite (And99; 110.34 ± 0.03 (0.04) [0.13] Ma, n = 7, MSWD = 1.21) and the Tiptop andradite (And87; 209.57 ± 0.11 (0.13) [0.26] Ma, n = 6, MSWD = 1.39). We also present additional calibration of the widely utilised Willsboro‐Lewis andradite primary reference material (And90; 1024.7 ± 9.5 (9.6) [9.6] Ma (2s; overdispersed), n = 6). Emeralds - the green colored variety of beryl - occur as gem-quality specimens in over fifty deposits globally. While digital traceability methods for emerald have limitations, sample-based approaches offer robust alternatives, particularly for determining the geographic origin of emerald. Three factors make emerald suitable for provenance studies and hence for developing models for origin determination. First, the diverse elemental chemistry of emerald at minor (<1 wt%) and trace levels (<1 to 100's ppmw) exhibits unique inter-element fractionations between global deposits. Second, minimally destructive techniques, including laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), enable measurement of these diagnostic elemental signatures. Third, when applied to extensive datasets, machine learning (ML) techniques enable the creation of predictive models and statistical discrimination with adequate characterization of the deposits. This study employs a carefully selected dataset comprising more than 1000 LA-ICP-MS analyses of gem-quality emeralds, enriched with new analyses. This dataset represents the largest available for global emerald deposits. We conducted unsupervised exploratory analysis using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). For machine learningbased classification, we employed Support Vector Machine Classification (SVM-C), achieving an initial accuracy rate of 79%. This was enhanced to 96.8% through the use of hierarchical SVM-C with PCA filters as our modeling approach. The ML models were trained using the concentrations of eight statistically significant elements (Li, V, Cr, Fe, Sc, Ga, Rb, Cs). By leveraging high-quality LA-ICP-MS data and ML techniques, accurate identification of the geographical origin of emerald becomes possible. These models are important for accurate provenance of emerald, and from a geochemical perspective, for understanding the formation environments of beryl-bearing pegmatites and shales. Discovered within the North Himalayan Metallogenic Belt (NHMB), the Zhaxikang Pb–Zn–Ag–Sb deposit stands as the sole super-large scale ore deposit in the region. This deposit holds significant quantities of Pb and Zn (2.066 million tons at 6.38% average grade), Ag (2661 tons at an average of 101.64 g/t), and Sb (0.235 million tons at 1.14% average grade), making it one of China's foremost Sb–polymetallic deposits. Stibnite represents the main carrier of Sb in this deposit and has been of great attention since its initial discovery. However, the trace element composition of stibnite in the Zhaxikang deposit has not yet been determined. This study carried out an analysis of the distribution patterns and substitution processes of trace elements within stibnite gathered from the Zhaxikang deposit, aiming to provide crucial information on ore-forming processes. Utilizing high-precision laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), we discovered that the studied stibnite is notably enriched in arsenic (~100 ppm) and lead (~10 ppm). Furthermore, the notably consistent time-resolved profiles suggest that elements such as Fe, Cu, As, In, Sn, Hg, and Pb predominantly exist as solid solutions within stibnite. Consequently, it is probable that the enrichment of Cu, Pb, and Sn in stibnite is due to isomorphic substitution reactions, including 3Pb2+↔2Sb3+, Cu+ + Pb2+↔Sb3+, and In3+ + Sn3+↔2Sb3+. Apart from that, Mn, Pb, and Hg with the spiky signals indicate their existence within stibnite as micro-inclusions. Overall, we found that the trace element substitutions in stibnite from the Zhaxikang Pb–Zn–Ag–Sb deposit are complicated. Incorporations of trace elements such as Pb, Cu, and In into stibnite are largely influenced by a variety of factors. The simple lattice structure and constant trace elements in studied stibnite indicate a low-temperature hydrothermal system and a relatively stable process for stibnite formation. The conducted study shows that apatite is one of the key accessory minerals in the ultramafic-mafic rocks of the Khudolaz differentiated complex in the Southern Urals, including late pegmatoid gabbro. Petrographic and mineralogical investigations determine apatite crystallizing simultaneously with hornblende in pegmatoid gabbro from the residual water-saturated melt after plagioclase crystallization at a temperature of 990–800 °C, a pressure of 1–3 kbar, oxygen fugacity from −13.9 to −10.7, and water content of 3.9–5.5 wt. %. Pegmatoid gabbro apatite (Appg) from the Severnyi Buskun composite massif differs from early ultramafic-mafic apatite having a fairly high potential for sulfide-platinum metal mineralization in low chlorine and high fluorine content. Low sulfur concentrations in Appg testify to the lack of sulfide-platinum metal mineralization potential of pegmatoid gabbro, but a scanty potential for rare-metal mineralization (e.g., REE) is possible. Appg is quite poor in REE despite the enrichment of pegmatoid gabbros in REE relative to early ultramafic-mafics, which indicates REE accumulation in the fluid. The ratios of cerium and europium anomalies characterize the Appg crystallization under conditions transitional from the magmatic to the hydrothermal stage. Generally, apatite is a good indicator of the difference in the conditions of formation of late pegmatoid gabbro and early ultramafic-mafic rocks, which determines the importance of this mineral in mineralogical and petrological studies. The effects of different regional tectonic events on the Neoproterozoic basement rocks of the Arabian–Nubian Shield in Sinai, as well as the Egyptian unstable and stable shelves, remain uncertain. Coupling fission-track thermochronometry findings with the modeling of the time–temperature history has proved to be an effective method for tackling these issues. The obtained zircon fission-track ages were differentiated into two groups from the Ediacaran–Cambrian and the Ordovician–Carboniferous periods, while the apatite fission-track data revealed two separate groups of cooling ages of the Carboniferous–Triassic and Late Cretaceous ages. The integration of these cooling ages and modeling of the time–temperature history revealed four discrete cooling pulses during the Neoproterozoic, Devonian–Carboniferous, Cretaceous, and Oligocene–Miocene eras. After integrating our findings with the regional tectonic historical and sedimentological records, these could be identified as cooling/exhumation pulses activated in response to the post-accretional event of erosion, Variscan tectonism, the disintegration of Gondwana, and the Gulf of Suez rifting, respectively. The metaturbidite‐hosted, ∼380 Ma Dufferin gold deposit, Meguma terrane, northeastern Appalachian Orogen (Nova Scotia, Canada) is an orogenic gold deposit with mineralized saddle reef‐type quartz veins hosted by metasandstones and black slates in a tightly folded anticline. Together with native gold inclusions, genetically related hydrothermal carbonaceous material (CM) in veins occurs as pyrobitumen in cavities and along fractures/grain boundaries proximal to vein contacts and wallrock fragments. Integrating several microanalytical methods we document the precipitation of gold via coupled fluid‐fO2 reduction (via interaction with CM) and pH increase. These changes in fluid chemistry destabilized gold bisulfide complexes, leading to efficient Au precipitation from a gold‐undersaturated (0.045 ± 0.024 ppm Au; 1σ; n = 58 fluid inclusions) aqueous‐carbonic fluid (H2O‐NaCl‐CO2 ± N2 ± CH4). The proposed mineralization mechanism is supported by: (a) a complementary decrease in Au and redox‐sensitive semimetals (As, Sb), and increase in wall rock‐derived elements (i.e., Mg, K, Ca, Sr, Fe) concentrations in fluid inclusions with time; (b) a corresponding decrease in the XCO2, consistent with CO2 removal via reduction/respeciation and late carbonate precipitation; and (c) gold embedding in, or on, the surface of CM inside mineralized cavities and fractures. Despite mineralizing fluids transporting low concentrations of Au far from saturation, precipitation of gold was locally evidently high where such fluids interacted with CM, contributing to the overall gold endowment of Meguma deposits. This work re‐emphasizes CM as a potential prerequisite for efficient gold precipitation within the overall genetic model for similar orogenic metasedimentary settings globally where the presence and/or role of CM has been documented. Plain Language Summary: The Dufferin gold deposit in Nova Scotia, Canada, formed ∼380 million years ago within metamorphosed sedimentary rocks called the Meguma Group. The deposit contains gold‐bearing quartz veins sandwiched between layers of tightly folded rocks. This study focused on unraveling the mechanisms behind some of the gold deposition within this deposit, specifically where associated with carbonaceous matter (CM). We found a close association between gold and CM, which represents organic matter preserved in the rocks. CM is abundant within small cavities throughout the quartz veins that also contain appreciable gold occurring as microscopic particles in the CM. By using a variety of analytical techniques, we determined that efficient gold mineralization occurred in response to specific chemical changes to the gold‐carrying fluid, including a decrease in the oxidation potential and a decrease in the acidity of the fluid through interaction with the CM‐rich rocks. Such changes to the fluid caused gold to become insoluble and form particles that were deposited in the rocks and vein material. Importantly, despite the fluid having a low concentration of dissolved gold, it exhibited a remarkable ability to deposit significant quantities of the precious metal, underscoring the important role of CM in facilitating efficient gold precipitation from fluids. The Xiaoqinling gold province, located in the southern margin of the North China Craton (NCC), is the second largest gold-enriched region in China. In this region, the Mesozoic Huashan (HS) and Wenyu (WY) plutons are the major magmatic intrusions coeval with gold mineralization, although they show contrasting characteristics in the distribution of gold. In this study, we use geochemical features of titanite determined by LA-ICP-MS and EPMA analyses and elemental mapping to decipher the mechanisms that led to the difference in gold enrichment related to the two plutons. Titanite from the Wenyu granitic pluton exhibits significantly higher (La/Sm)N, (La/Yb)N, ΣLREE/ΣHREE ratios, and ΣREE concentration and slightly higher (Gd/Yb)N values than those of the Huashan Pluton, suggesting that the Wenyu pluton might have experienced more complex magmatic evolution, widespread hydrothermal alteration, and higher silica activity in the melt than the Huashan pluton. The titanite grains from the Huashan pluton show higher (Nb/Ta)N and (Lu/Hf)N values and significantly lower Zr concentration than those of the Wenyu pluton. The titanite grains from the Wenyu pluton show higher vanadium and gallium concentrations and Fe/Al ratio than those of the Huashan pluton, indicating comparatively higher f o 2 . Furthermore, the titanite grains from Wenyu pluton indicate higher water content in the magma. In addition, magma mingling and magmatic hydrothermal fluids derived from the crust/mantle are critical sources for ore-forming materials. In this contribution, we document changes in detrital zircon ages in the upper Devonian (Famennian) to lower Carboniferous (Mississippian) Billefjorden Group on Bjørnøya, the southernmost island of Svalbard. This alluvial, coal‐bearing clastic succession is widely distributed across the archipelago and the Barents Shelf. The sediments were deposited in subsidence‐induced lowlands that formed just after regional post‐Caledonian collapse‐related extension, which created the classical 'Old Red Sandstone' basins during the Devonian, and prior to localised rift‐basin development in the middle Carboniferous (Serpukhovian–Moscovian). Moreover, the succession is little affected by Ellesmerian compressional deformation, which occurred in the latest Devonian. However, little is known of the provenance and regional sediment routing in this tectonically transitional period between the post‐Caledonian structuring events in the Devonian and the middle Carboniferous rifting. It has previously been invoked that a regional fault running parallel to the western Barents Shelf margin, the West Bjørnøya Fault, controlled sedimentation in the area. Here, we combine detrital zircon U–Pb ages and sedimentological data to investigate stratigraphic provenance variations and test whether tectonics controlled deposition of the Billefjorden Group on Bjørnøya. Sedimentological investigations demonstrate changes in fluvial style with intercalations between successions dominated by meandering channel fills and abundant overbank fines to sandstone‐dominated sheet‐like successions of braided stream origin. Palaeocurrent data show that two competing drainage directions accompany the changes in fluvial architecture. Northeasterly transport directions, recorded in the braided stream deposits, indicate possible fault‐transverse drainage. The detrital zircon content in these deposits indicates sourcing from Caledonian terranes in Northeast Greenland. Northwest‐oriented transport directions, measured in the meandering channel deposits, are inferred to represent axially positioned drainage systems. These may have been sourced from either Northeast Greenland, a more localised source, or Baltica. The latter would require long‐distance sourcing, which, given the tectonic setting of the region, seems unlikely. Although our sedimentological observations point to syn‐tectonic deposition, this is not clearly captured in the detrital zircon data, suggesting a common source for the Late Devonian–Mississippian fluvial systems of Bjørnøya. Thus, combined with previously published provenance data from Svalbard and Greenland, we demonstrate that the East Greenland Caledonides formed a long‐lived and significant source area which provided sediments to nearby basins from the Devonian to the Early Cretaceous. The sedimentary environment and mechanisms of formation of giant ooids (> 2 mm) are not well understood. Here, we use petrographical, mineralogical and geochemical data of giant ooids from the Lower Triassic Buntsandstein Formation of central Germany to develop a coherent formation model. Structural preservation of calcite crystallites in ooid cortices in combination with comparatively low strontium concentrations (< 545 μg/g) and the absence of dolomite in the cortex suggest a primary low-Mg calcite composition. Shale-normalised rare earth elements plus yttrium (REE + Y) patterns lack a pronounced heavy REE over light REE enrichment and show a positive cerium anomaly (Ce/Ce*SN = 1.9–3.9). Together with a missing yttrium anomaly and low Y/Ho ratios (< 40), these data are largely consistent with ooid formation in a lacustrine environment. Positive cerium and lanthanum anomalies further point to formation and deposition in an alkaline to hypersaline playa-lake environment. Based on our findings, a five-stage formation model is proposed. We suggest nucleus formation by microbial spheres, followed by calcite crystal nucleation on biofilm templates at the sediment–water interface, and crystal/cortex growth inside the sediment pile. The spherical ooid form is achieved by wave-induced physical rolling motion after exhumation. Ooid growth ceases when the ooid reaches a critical size (here 4 mm), depending on local hydrodynamic properties. Inhomogeneous crystal growth and the inclusion of exogenous particles lead to structural and geochemical anomalies in the ooid cortex. The Xianghualing large tin-polymetallic skarn deposit is located in the Nanling W-Sn metallogenic belt, South China, showing distinct spatial zoning of mineralization. From the contact between granite and carbonate rocks, the mineralization transitions from proximal skarn Sn ore to cassiterite-sulfide ore and more distal Pb–Zn-sulfide ore. This study reveals the fluid evolution and genetic links among these different ore types. The physical and chemical characteristics of fluid inclusions from each ore types indicate that the skarn Sn ore, cassiterite-sulfide ore, and Pb–Zn-sulfide ore all originated from the identical magmatic fluid exsolved from the Laiziling granite. Their formation, however, is controlled by diverse fluid evolutionary processes and host rock characteristics. The Sn–Pb-Zn-rich fluids were primarily derived from cooled and diluted magmatic brine, which is generated by boiling of initial single phase magmatic fluid. Mixing of magmatic brine with meteoric water is crucial to form skarn Sn ore. Redox reactions of aqueous Sn (II) complexes with As (III) species and/or minor CO2 during short cooling period of ore-forming fluid is likely an effective mechanism to form high-grade cassiterite-sulfide ores, accompanied by favorable pH conditions maintained through interaction with carbonate host rocks. The later stage addition of meteoric water prompts the formation of Pb–Zn-sulfide ore. Comparing these findings with the characteristics of initial or pre-ore magmatic fluids in both mineralized and barren granitic systems indicates that high Sn content in the pre-ore fluids and the suitable fractional crystallization degree of the parent magma may determine high Sn mineralization potential in granitic magmatic-hydrothermal systems. Porphyry-epithermal veins hosting Re-rich molybdenite and rheniite (ReS2) from the Maronia Cu-Mo ± Re ± Au porphyry in Thrace, NE Greece, provide new insights into the hydrothermal processes causing extreme Re enrichment. Quartz trace element chemistry (Al/Ti, Ge/Ti), Ti-in-quartz thermometry, and cathodoluminescence imaging reveal multiple quartz generations in consecutive hydrothermal quartz-sulfide veins associated with potassic, sericitic, and argillic alteration. Fluid inclusions in different quartz generations indicate that phase separation and fluid cooling are the main ore-forming processes in the porphyry stage (~ 500 – 350 °C), whereas mixing of a vapor-rich fluid with metalliferous (e.g., Pb, Zn, Au) meteoric water forms the epithermal veins (~ 280 °C). These processes are recorded by trace element ratios in pyrite that are sensitive to changes in fluid temperature (Se/Te), fluid salinity (As/Sb, Co/As), and mixing between fluids of magmatic and meteoric origin (Se/Ge). Highly variable intra-grain δ34S values in pyrite record S isotope fractionation during SO2 disproportionation and phase separation, emphasizing the importance of in situ δ34S analysis to unravel ore-forming processes. High δ34S (~ 4.5‰) values of sulfides are indicative of low SO42−/H2S fluid ratios buffered by the local host rocks and mixing of the magma-derived fluid with meteoric water. The formation of Re-rich molybdenite (~ 6600 ppm) is favored by cooling and reduction of a magma-derived, high-temperature (~400 °C), oxidized, and Re-rich fluid triggering efficient Re precipitation in early veins in the potassic alteration zone. The systematic temporal fluid evolution therefore reveals that coeval cooling and reduction of oxidized Re-rich fluids cause extreme Re enrichment at the Maronia porphyry system. Porphyry indicator zircons (PIZ) are often used as an exploratory guide to distinguish fertile granitoid-hosted porphyry copper deposits (PCD). Alumina-saturated granitoids with higher zirconium (> 200 ppm) contents are often the hosts of PCD. REE profiling of zircon is used here to evaluate the chemistry of zircon from a blend of I- and A-type granitoids that hosts the 'Kaziranga' porphyry copper mineralization in the Karbi Hills of the Shillong Plateau. Zircon Hf(t) (1.69–9.88; av.4.65) and whole rock 87Sr/86Sr (0.703) of the Kaziranga granitoids suggest magma derivation in an intraplate or primitive island arc tectonic setting, in which the active mechanism of magma derivation was partial melting of a metasomatically enriched lithospheric mantle that was probably fertilized by an intraplate mantle plume. The fertility indicators with PIZ are grouped with respect to the distribution pattern of normalized REEs, as they exhibit low LREE and enriched HREE, large + Ce, and small -Eu anomalies. The hypogene alteration zones have developed on a regular basis, the potassic alteration zone being close to the central zone around Kuthori in the north Karbi Hills. Although the hosts demonstrate expansion and development of the hypogene alteration zones, the zircons from the mineralized granitoids of Kuthori central zone and granitoids of the nearby Panbari–Dallamara shear zone have similar REE pattern. The target zone's zircon has higher values of ΣHREE, U, Th, Y, Nb, and Hf. The admissible range of fertile PCD is matched by the cross plots of critical element ratios, demonstrating high calculated Ti in zircon temperature (up to 828 °C). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Xicheng ore field in West Qinling contains numerous Pb‒Zn deposits of varying sizes and is one of the largest areas of Pb‒Zn mineral resources in China. The Xiejiagou Pb‒Zn deposit is in the central part of the southern belt of the Xicheng ore field. No research has been completed on the trace elements and origin of this deposit. To supplement the geochemical information for each deposit in the Xicheng ore field and provide a scientific basis for the exploration of critical metals in the region, the sulfide in the Xiejiagou deposit is selected as the subject of investigation in this study, and its trace element composition is examined using laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (LA–ICP‒MS), accompanied by fluid inclusion thermometry and sulfur isotope analysis, to elucidate the geochemical characteristics of the deposit and propose its genesis. The results showed that the compositions of the trace elements in different sulfides differ greatly, with sphalerite mainly enriched in Cd and relatively enriched in Ge, Mn and In; galena mainly enriched in Ag and relatively enriched in Se, Ge and Tl; chalcopyrite relatively enriched in Sn and Ge; and pyrite relatively enriched in Ni, Co, Ge and Tl. The critical metals are mainly in sphalerite. Zn and Cd mapping diagrams of sphalerite suggest a possible Zn2+ ↔ Cd2+ substitution mechanism; Fe and Mn are positively correlated, while Fe and Zn are negatively correlated, suggesting a possible Fe2+ + Mn2+ ↔ 2Zn2+-coupled substitution mechanism; and the positive correlation between Cu and Ge is strong, while the difference in the content is large, suggesting a substitution mechanism involving (n + 1)Zn2+ ↔ Ge2+ + nCu2+. The sulfur isotopes show obvious heavy sulfur characteristics; the sulfur source is likely Middle Devonian seawater sulfate or marine sulfate from the strata, and the production of reduced sulfur is closely related to thermochemical sulfate reduction (TSR). The trace element compositions of sulfides in the Xiejiagou Pb‒Zn deposit exhibit characteristics that are essentially consistent with those of Mississippi valley-type (MVT) deposits, which clearly distinguish them from sedimentary exhalative (SEDEX) deposits. Additionally, the homogenization temperatures of the fluid inclusions in this deposit are lower than those of the SEDEX deposits; they range between 120 and 160°C, with a mean value of 172°C. Overall, the results indicate that the deposit is classified as an MVT Pb‒Zn deposit, and in this article, a mineralization model diagram has been drawn for the Xiejiagou Pb–Zn deposit. Determining the provenience of archaeological objects relies on the so-called “provenience postulate,” namely, that sources of these objects are more compositionally distinct from each other than they are internally variable. For ceramics, it can be relatively straightforward in geologically heterogeneous environments to determine where vessels were produced, and whether they were traded or not. In geologically homogeneous regions, this can be far more complicated. In this study, we mineralogically and chemically compare Bronze Age ceramics (primarily Middle Bronze Age) from five archaeological sites on the Great Hungarian Plain to a large regional clay sample. The Great Hungarian Plain is comprised almost entirely of Pleistocene loess deposits, yet prior compositional studies have identified patterned variability between ceramics from different sites. Our results show that chemical variation in the region is continuous and clinal, making it difficult to strictly apply the provenience postulate to identify distinct production locations. However, we show that this clinal chemical variability can be used to make broad statements about whether most ceramics at any given site were produced relatively locally or were obtained from further distances (c. 50 km or more). We show that while production at most of our study sites was likely relatively localized, in one instance (the tell at Berettyóújfalu-Herpály-Földvár), many ceramics may have been obtained from other Bronze Age communities, including those in the Körös River drainage. In marine fishes of commercial interest, defining habitat use and migration strategies through ontogeny can help better understand the structure and dynamics of harvested populations and guide their management. The present study relied on otolith chemistry to identify three contingents within the Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) stock in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (GSL). We differentiated two chemical signatures from otolith edges, one for shallow (<100 m) and another one for deep (>100 m) waters. By identifying transitions between the deep and shallow habitats, we found that most halibut display migrations from the deep waters to shallow waters during the first 3 years of life. After reaching maturity, most halibut distributing in northern regions of the GSL became full-time residents in deep areas of the GSL. In contrast, halibut found in summer on the shallow plateau of the southern GSL displayed migrating behaviour between shallow (summer) and deep (winter) waters throughout their lives, either on an annual or irregular basis. Overall, our results demonstrate that otolith chemical signatures serve as natural markers of geographically distinct marine environments, facilitating the identification and reconstruction of environmental histories of long-lived marine fishes. A series of three CGSP‐P phosphate matrix reference materials, with variable element mass fractions, were synthesised by co‐precipitation with CaCl2 and (NH4)3PO4 to form a hydroxylapatite matrix. Each powder sample was packaged into multiple bottles and pressed into tablets as replicates. The within‐bottle homogeneity was evaluated by the repeatability of element mass fractions of six spots in per tablet of CGSP‐Ps by LA‐ICP‐MS. For the between‐bottle homogeneity evaluation, one approach adopted the % RSD of element mass fractions in twelve different tablets from twelve bottles in the same reference material in comparison with the repeatability field of LA‐ICP‐MS analyses obtained from homogeneous glasses, and the other used a one‐way analysis of variance (ANOVA) approach. Most of the elements (e.g., Mg, Ca, P, Mn and REE) were homogenous within 10% RSD, and other elements (e.g., Si, Al, K, Rb, Cs and Ni) were considered heterogeneous (with > 20% RSD). All of the elements passed the t‐test except Ni in CGSP‐P3, and V, Cr, Ni, Zr, Gd, Dy and Th in CGSP‐P4 after a 29‐month period stability examination by LA‐ICP‐MS. The preliminary reference values and standard uncertainties for CGSP‐Ps are given with a network of methods and eight laboratories by bulk analysis according to ISO Guide 35:2006 and JJF 1343‐2012. Germanium (Ge) is a critical raw material for emerging high-tech and green industries, resulting in considerable recent interest in understanding its distribution and geochemical behavior in ore deposits. In this contribution, the distribution of Ge and related trace elements in the Fule Pb-Zn(-Ge) deposit, South China, is investigated to reveal the distribution of Ge in the hydrothermal ores and during sulfide weathering, using multiple microanalytical techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). In the Fule MVT deposit, sphalerite (ZnS) is the most significant Ge-carrier relative to other sulfides, though the five recognized textural types of sphalerite display progressive depletion in Ge from the first sphalerite generation to the late one. In the early stage, sphalerite with fine-grained chalcopyrite inclusions has the highest Ge concentrations, probably accounting for a significant proportion of the total Ge. We interpret that high Ge concentrations in the early sphalerite may be attributable to high Cu activity in the mineralizing fluids. During oxidative weathering, Ge was redistributed from its original host, sphalerite, to the weathering product willemite (Zn2SiO4) rather than smithsonite (ZnCO3), with high levels of Ge (up to 448 μg/g) present in the willemite. The formation of abundant willemite largely prevents the dispersion of Ge during weathering. In principle, willemite-hosted Ge should be fully recoverable, and the Zn-silicate ores may, therefore, be a potential target to meet future demand. This study provides new information on how Ge behaves from sulfide- to weathering-stage in MVT systems, which directly impacts Ge mobility and deportment changes and the development of metallurgical strategies for Ge recovery. External contamination of hair is the most significant challenge to it becoming an accepted matrix for monitoring endogenous metal exposure and nutritional deficiency. Here we use laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to quantify elemental concentrations in hair strands below and above the scalp in the cuticle and cortex layers to determine the extent of external contamination in a reference population. Evidence of hair strand contamination occurred for barium, calcium, iron, magnesium, and strontium in both the outer cuticle and the inner cortex layers, with increasing concentrations from root to tip. Aluminum, boron, copper, lead, and manganese showed significant contamination in the cuticle layer only, suggesting some protection of the inner cortex. Phosphorus and potassium decreased outside the scalp suggesting loss by washing, while chromium, mercury, selenium, sodium, titanium, and zinc showed no evidence of loss or external contamination above the scalp. The results clearly show that for most elements, hair chemistry above the scalp is unreliable for use in interpretation of endogenous exposures or deficiencies, and that the below-scalp portion provides a more accurate monitoring tool. A simple and reliable external calibration strategy of LA-ICP-MS for fresh plant soft tissues was developed. The prepared plant suspension was frozen by the designed cryogenic ablation cell and used as external standard for quantitative elemental imaging analysis of fresh plant tissues. The controllable water content of the prepared external standards provides a similar matrix with fresh soft tissues, and a homogeneous elemental distribution could be ensured due to the fine grinding particle sizes. More interestingly, the presence of water increased the signal intensity produced by the suspension by a factor of 1.6 (Pb) to 66.6 (La) compared to that of the pressed cake. The excellent dispersing property and advantage of long-term use were achieved owing to the employment of 0.1% PAANa as suspending agent. A series of plant reference materials were analyzed, and the relative errors of most elements were less than 10 %, indicating that there is a reliable accuracy of the proposed method. The limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 0.1 ng·g−1 (La) to 1279 ng·g−1 (S). This method was used for elemental imaging analysis in rice leaves under arsenic stress, and the results were consistent with previous studies, which mean that the proposed method could provide technical support for researchers in the fields of agriculture and environment. The Songshugang deposit is a large Ta–Nb deposit in South China, with Ta–Nb mineralization associated genetically with the granite and pegmatite. A diversity of quartz from topaz–albite granite, quartz–mica pegmatite, quartz–feldspar pegmatite, and quartz–fluorite pegmatite at Songshugang was studied by CL and LA–ICP–MS in order to constrain enrichment mechanisms of Nb and Ta and to find geochemical indicators of quartz for rare metal deposits. Cathodoluminescence image illuminates a canvas of complexity, the quartz from topaz–albite granite, quartz–mica pegmatite, quartz–feldspar pegmatite, and quartz–fluorite pegmatite, exhibits numerous dark CL streaks, patches, and a series of healed fractures. These textures suggest that the rocks were fractured because of deep crustal pressure, and underwent later hydrothermal metasomatism and quartz filling. The quartz from quartz–fluorite pegmatite present limited patches or fractures but distinct growth bands, indicating that the melt fluid composition during the formation of quartz at this stage varies greatly and is less affected by mechanical fragmentation. The LA–ICP–MS analysis of quartz shows that there is a positive correlation between Al and Li in the quartz from topaz–albite granite, quartz–mica pegmatite, quartz–feldspar pegmatite, to quartz–fluorite pegmatite, indicating that Al mainly enters the quartz lattice through charge compensation substitution mechanism with Li. However, our data deviate from the theoretical Li:Al mass ratio of ~ 1:3.89 in quartz, indicating that there may be competition between H+ and Li in a water-rich magmatic environment. The quartz from topaz–albite granite is enriched in K and Na elements, and the quartz from quartz–fluorite pegmatite is enriched in fluorite with a low Ca content in quartz, further elucidating that these rocks were subjected to hydrothermal metasomatism. From topaz–albitite granite to quartz–fluorite pegmatite, Al, Li and Ge content and Al/Ti, Ge/Ti, Sb/Ti ratios in quartz gradually increased, but Ti content gradually decreased, reflecting the high evolution of magma, which can enrich rare metal elements. Based on the characteristics of quartz CL textures and trace elements in topaz–albite granite, quartz–mica pegmatite, quartz–feldspar pegmatite, and quartz–fluorite pegmatite, combined with the albitization and K-feldspathization of rocks, it is suggested that the Nb–Ta mineralization in Songshugang may be influenced by the combined action of magmatic crystallization differentiation and fluid metasomatism. By comparing the quartz in the Songshugang pluton with the quartz in the granite type and pegmatite type rare metal deposits recognized in the world, the Songshugang pegmatite share similarities with the LCT-type pegmatite. Combined with previous studies, the Ge/Ti > 0.1 and Ti < 10 ppm, as well as Al, Li, Ge, Sb, K, Na contents and Al/Ti, Sb/Ti ratios in quartz have the potential to be a powerful exploration marker for identifying granite-like pegmatitic Nb–Ta deposits in other places. The Cornubian Batholith (SW England) is an archetypal Variscan rare metal granite with potential for Li-mica mineralization. We present a petrographic, trace element and multivariate statistical study of micas from the Cornubian Batholith granite series and related hydrothermally altered units to assess the role of magmatic vs subsolidus processes and of fluxing elements (F and B) on the Li cycle during the evolution of the system. The mica types are as follows: (1) magmatic, which include Fe-biotite, protolithionite I and phengite-muscovite from the most primitive granites, and zinnwaldite I from more fractionated lithologies; (2) subsolidus, which encompass high-temperature autometasomatic Li-micas and low-temperature hydrothermal muscovite-phengite. Autometasomatic species include protolithionite II, zinnwaldite II and lepidolite, which were observed in the most fractionated and hydrothermally altered units, and occur as replacements of magmatic micas. Low-temperature hydrothermal Li-poor micas formed via alteration of magmatic and autometasomatic micas or as replacement of feldspars, and albeit occur in all studied lithologies they are best represented by the granite facies enriched in metasomatic tourmaline. The evolution of micas follows two major trends underlining a coupling and decoupling between the Li(F) and B fluxes. These include as follows: (1) a Li(F)-progressive trend explaining the formation of protolithionite I and zinnwaldite I, which fractionate Li along with Cs, Nb and Sn during the late-magmatic stages of crystallization, and of zinnwaldite II and lepidolite forming from the re-equilibration of primary micas with high-temperature Li-B-W-Tl-Cs-Mn-W-rich autometasomatic fluids; (2) a Li(F)-retrogressive trend explaining the low-temperature hydrothermal muscovitization, which represents the main Li depletion process. Trace element geochemistry and paragenesis of late muscovite-phengite support that muscovitization is a district-scale process that affected the upper parts of the granite cupolas through acidic and B(Fe-Sn)-saturated hydrothermal fluids associated with metasomatic tourmalinization, which were mixed with a low Eh meteoric component. Ultrahigh‐temperature (UHT; >900°C) metamorphism drives crustal differentiation and is widely recognized in the rock record, but its geodynamic causes are debated. Previous work on granulite‐facies metapelite xenoliths from San Luis Potosí, Mexico suggests the lower crust experienced a protracted UHT metamorphic event that coincided with the onset of regional extension. To determine the duration, conditions, and heat sources of UHT metamorphism recorded by these xenoliths, this study characterizes the major‐element, trace‐element, and U‐Pb isotopic systematics of quartz, rutile, feldspar, garnet, and zircon by in situ electron microprobe (EPMA) and laser‐ablation inductively coupled‐plasma mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS), and augments these data with detailed petrography, thermobarometry, phase equilibria modeling, and diffusion modeling. Thermobarometry and phase equilibria modeling suggest peak metamorphic conditions exceeded 0.7 GPa and 900°C. Zircon petrochronology confirms >15 Myr of UHT conditions since its onset at ∼30 Ma. A small population of zircon record elevated temperatures following transition from backarc compression to extension during the waning stages of orogenesis (60–37 Ma). Garnet preserves trace‐element zoning and mineral inclusions consistent with suprasolidus garnet growth and subsequent compositional modification by intracrystalline rare‐earth element diffusion during protracted heating, with diffusion chronometry timescales in agreement with zircon data, followed by fluid‐driven remobilization of trace elements along now‐healed fractures within ∼1 Myr of eruption. In sum, these data are most compatible with lithospheric mantle attenuation or removal as the dominant heat transport mechanism driving synextensional UHT metamorphism and crustal melting, which has bearing on models for crustal differentiation and formation of modern and ancient granulite terranes globally. Plain Language Summary: The production of melt in the deep crust has important implications for how continents are physically and chemically modified, which in turn controls the distribution of critical mineral resources and the expression of plate tectonics at Earth's surface. One setting where significant partial melting can occur is in a high‐temperature granulite terrane, such as the lower crust beneath the Basin and Range province of southwestern North America. The Basin and Range province is a region where the continent is actively experiencing tectonic extension and, in several places, has been interpreted to have lower crust that was (or is currently) heated to above 900°C. To understand the causality between continental extension in North America and these extreme metamorphic conditions, we study exotic rock fragments of the deep crust beneath San Luis Potosí, Mexico that were brought up by a geologically recent volcanic eruption. These rocks record chemical information that tracks the temperature of the geologically modern lower crust prior to eruption and the duration of extreme temperatures and melting in this crust over the last 60 million years. Using this chemical information, we further our understanding of how tectonic extension is actively driving deep crustal melting beneath southwestern North America. The Iron Age was a period of change, with many innovations in the glass-making technology. The chemical composition of the set of objects considered in the present study demonstrates the diversity of the raw materials used and the depth of knowledge about the manipulation of glass appearance in the eighth-sixth centuries BCE. The study was carried out using fibre optics reflection spectroscopy and portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry at the museums’ premises to examine a large number of glass beads and preliminarily group them on the basis of their composition and spectral characteristics. In addition, a smaller set of selected samples was analysed by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to provide a comprehensive chemical characterisation of the material. The compositional data indicated that the samples belonged to the high magnesium and low magnesium glass compositional types. Only one sample was recognised as low magnesium medium potassium glass. Glasses within each group were made from different sands, suggesting different provenances. Some of the samples were suggested to be of local origin, while the others were interpreted as imported glass. Evidence of glass colouring, decolouring and recycling are also discussed. Forty-six glass finds, including vessel fragments, windows, one inlay and one indicator of production (moil) excavated in the dump of the Sarno Baths in Pompeii were selected for an interdisciplinary technological, typological and chemical study. The identification of the moil demonstrates that a glassblowing workshop most likely existed in Pompeii, thus putting an end to a long-standing scientific debate. The LA-ICP-MS chemical data show that Roman-Mn base glass predominates, along with few Egyptian natron-type glasses and some plant-ash glass of probable Egyptian origin as well. A large proportion of the analysed glass, including the moil, consists of recycled compositions, suggesting the existence of an efficient system of collection and recycling of glass, which was active even at a time when the city had an abundant supply of fresh glass. The demand for raw glass in Pompeii far exceeded the average demand of other Roman towns, because glass containers were essential for the flourishing perfume industry in Pompeii and Campania. The proximity of the Sarno dump to the perfume district in the south-western part of the city and to the horrea of the Sanctuary of Venus suggests the possible location of the glass workshop in this area. The Perron deposit, located in the northern part of the Archean Abitibi belt, bears some of the highest gold-grade mineralization for orogenic-vein-type deposits worldwide (High-Grade Zone: HGZ). More than 13 gold-bearing zones with different sulfide assemblages, hydrothermal alterations, and gold grades have been recently outlined, and they range from volcanogenic to orogenic in origin. In addition, seven zones are hosted in a restricted volume of ~1 km3, which is called the Eastern Gold Zone. Pyrite, sphalerite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite—each from a different gold-bearing zone—were analyzed with LA-ICP-MS to decipher their genetic links, mineralizing processes, and temperature of formation. The temperatures calculated with the sphalerite GGIMFis thermometer range from 348 to 398 °C. All gold-bearing zones recorded volcanogenic hydrothermal inputs at different intensities, manifested by pyrrhotite. Pyrite was late-metamorphic and related to the orogenic gold system induced by the contact metamorphism of amphibolite facies. The pyrrhotite grains had very homogeneous trace element signatures in all zones, which is a characteristic of metamorphic recrystallization, exhibiting a loss of mobile elements (Au, Te, Bi, Tl, Sn, W, In) but high concentrations of Ni, Co, and As. Conversely, the pyrite was systematically enriched with all elements depleted from pyrrhotite, bearing five specific signatures of element enrichments: W, Tl, Sn, In-Cd-Zn, and Bi-Te-Au. For gold-rich zones (e.g., the HGZ), gold was linked to the Bi-Te-Au signature of pyrite, with Bi enrichment occurring at up to 72,000 times the background level in Archean shale pyrite. It was concluded that gold was transported, at least in part, as Bi-Te melts in the previously documented non-aqueous orogenic fluids, hence accounting for the very-high-grade gold content of the HGZ. Genetically, the metamorphism of primary gold-bearing volcanogenic mineralizations was the main source of gold during the overprinting of amphibolite (600 °C) in a metamorphically induced orogenic mineralizing event. The Bou Dahar Pb-Zn district, located in the Moroccan High Atlas, is a typical carbonate-hosted Pb-Zn ore district (>30 Mt at 4 wt.% Pb, 4 wt.% Zn). In situ trace element analysis was performed using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) on galena and cerussite from different ore types. The galena is generally enriched in Ag and Sb, secondarily enriched in Cu, with a trace amount of Cd and As, but extremely depleted in Bi and Tl. The main substitution mechanism in galena is (Ag, Cu)+ + Sb3+ ↔ 2Pb2+, and at high Sb concentrations, the further substitution of 2Sb3+ + □ ↔ 3Pb2+ (where □ represents a vacancy) took place. Micro-inclusions of Cu-Sb-bearing minerals (such as tetrahedrite) and Ag-bearing minerals (such as acanthite) may exist in some situations. The features of trace elements in galena show the existence of different coupled substitutions in vein-related ore, breccia-related ore, and strata-bound ore. This suggests that the Bou Dahar district experienced multistage mineralization. The MVT model alone cannot fully explain the ore-forming process. The cerussite replacing strata-bound galena is enriched in Sr, Ba, Ag, and Cu, with minor Sb, As, and Tl. Strontium and Ba are directly substituted with Pb in the cerussite lattice. Copper and Ag are likely present in cerussite as nano-inclusions, which differs from the coupled substitution mechanism of the original galena. High concentrations of Ag may occur due to minor electrum inclusions. The enrichment of Ag, Cu, and Au in cerussite during the oxidation process may guide the optimization of ore processing, especially in extracting valuable trace/minor elements. Raman spectroscopy and laser ablation‐inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry were used to characterize the chemical composition of 34 red garnet beads from Lower Nubian sites, dated between about 3200 BCE and 600 CE. All beads from the A‐Group to the Meroitic period feature a similar calcium‐poor almandine composition (69%–78% almandine, 15%–22% pyrope, 2%–6% grossular, 3%–9% spessartine), which differs from other calcium‐poor almandine garnet types, sourced mostly from Indian deposits in Antiquity. The Nubian beads constitute a new garnet type, named "cluster I", featuring high yttrium (180 to 1205 ppm), moderately low chromium (13–70 ppm), and high scandium (119–213 ppm) concentrations. Their compositions match with previous and two new analyses from two alluvial garnet deposits, Wadi El‐Haraz and Wadi Abu Dom, near the Fourth Cataract of the Nile in Upper Nubia, about 670 km as the crow flies from the Lower Nubian graves. Garnet trade between the Bayuda desert and Lower Nubia sites, and possibly even Egypt, flourished for almost four millennia. Northeastern Africa is the cradle for the oldest use of a gemstone that is harder than quartz—the red almandine garnet. A Post‐Meroitic bead, the youngest in the assembly, displays an unusual faceting, a diamond tipped drill hole, excellent polish, distinct short‐ and long‐prismatic colorless mineral inclusions, and a calcium‐ and manganese‐poor pyrope composition. Bark paintings represent a unique artform that originated in Australia and continues to this day. This paper presents a scientific investigation into both the pigments and binders used by Aboriginal artists from across the Northern Territory (NT) and the Kimberley region in Western Australia (WA) and represents the first major study dedicated to identifying these materials in samples taken from paintings. Laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy were used to identify the pigments in the four colors commonly associated with works by Aboriginal artists: red, yellow, black, and white. Iron oxides are used for red and yellow. Typically, kaolin is used for white and carbon or natural manganese ores are used for black, although the use of other pigments such as huntite (white) and battery black were seen in paintings from specific locations. Evidence of trade could not be established during this study; however, analysis shows that artists may use different pigments based on location and availability. A combination of FTIR and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (pyrolysis-GC-MS) was utilized to investigate the presence of a binder in the paint. Plant-based materials were identified as the binder in the majority of the paintings. The use of orchid juice was common, both as a preparatory layer on the bark substrate and as a paint binder. Banded iron formations (BIFs) archive the relationship between Earth's lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere through time. However, constraints on the origin of Earth's largest ore deposits, hosted by BIFs, are limited by the absence of direct geochronology. Without this temporal context, genetic models cannot be correlated with tectono-thermal and atmospheric drivers responsible for BIF upgrading through time. Utilizing in situ iron oxide U-Pb geochronology, we provide a direct timeline of events tracing development of all the giant BIF-hosted hematite deposits of the Hamersley Province (Pilbara Craton, Western Australia). Direct dating demonstrates that the major iron ore deposits in the region formed during 1.4 to 1.1 Ga. This is one billion to hundreds of millions of years later than previous age constraints based upon 1) the presence of hematite ore clasts in conglomerate beds deposited before ~1.84 Ga, and 2) phosphate mineral dating, which placed the onset of iron mineralization in the Province at ~2.2 to 2.0 Ga during the great oxidation event. Dating of the hematite clasts verified the occurrence of a ~2.2 to 2.0 Ga event, reflecting widespread, but now largely eroded iron mineralization occurring when the Pilbara and Kaapvaal cratons were proximal. No existing phosphate mineral dates overlap with obtained hematite dates and therefore cannot be related to hematite crystallization and ore formation. New geochronology conclusively links all major preserved hematite deposits to a far younger (1.4 to 1.1 Ga) formation period, correlated with the amalgamation of Australia following breakup of the Columbia supercontinent. In addition to his astronomical observations the famous Renaissance astronomer Tycho Brahe (1546–1601) was known also for his interest in alchemy. He equipped his castle Uraniborg on the island of Ven with a state-of-the-art alchemical laboratory when it was erected around 1580. After Brahe's death Uraniborg was demolished upon a royal decree from 1601, a process which was completed around 1650. In the present study we have analysed four glass shards and one ceramic shard most likely from the alchemical laboratory and retrieved during an archaeological excavation in 1988–90. Cross sections of the shards have been analysed for 31 trace elements by Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma with Mass Spectrometry with the aim of detecting any traces of the chemical substances on the inside or outside of the shards used in the laboratory. Four of the elements found in excess on the exterior surfaces of the shards, Cu, Sb, Au, and Hg, are in accordance with the reconstructed recipes of the three Paracelsian medicines for which Brahe was famous—Medicamenta tria. The Jinchanghe Pb-Zn polymetallic deposit is a representative distal skarn deposit in the Baoshan block. Due to limited research on the sources of ore-forming metals and trace elemental geochemistry of sulfides, the sources and mineralization environments of the Jinchanghe skarn Pb-Zn polymetallic deposit are still controversial. In this study, copper and sulfur isotopes and trace elements of sulfides from the Jinchanghe Pb-Zn polymetallic deposit were analyzed to reveal the sources of ore-forming materials and the ore-forming environments. The trace elemental analysis results show abundant Co, Ni, Mn and Se elements, and less As, Tl and Sb elements dominantly enter pyrite by isomorphic substitution, except for some Zn and Cu that occur as sulfide inclusions in Py1. Abundant Fe and Mn elements could substitute Zn to enter the sphalerite crystal lattice by the isomorphic substitution mechanism of (Fe2+ + Mn2+) ↔ 2Zn2+, and less Ag and Sb elements could enter the sphalerite by the isomorphic substitution mechanism of (Ag+ + Sb3+) ↔ 2Zn2+. The Cu-S isotopic and trace elemental compositions jointly suggest that the Jinchanghe distal skarn Pb-Zn polymetallic deposit formed from magmatic hydrothermal fluids with a sedimentary host-rock contribution, under mesothermal conditions (260 °C on sphalerite). Apatite fission track (AFT) dating is now routinely performed using LA‐ICP‐MS, and U‐Pb age data are often acquired at the same time, allowing double dating of individual grains. Furthermore, additional geochemical data, such as REE mass fractions are readily acquired during the analysis. It is therefore of practical interest to identify a single material as a quality control on ages and composition. Here we present AFT and U‐Pb data for the McClure Mountain Syenite (MMS) apatite, already widely used as an age reference material by the U‐Pb community. We performed double dating on 238 grains, in thirteen measurement sessions over two years. The AFT data show remarkable reproducibility with an overall central age of 254.1 ± 5.1 Ma. The U‐Pb results agree with the reference age for individual sessions (and for all data together). The results show that that the McClure Mountain apatite is a valid quality control material for double dating, allowing the use of the same material for both methods. We also propose to extend the quality control using MMS to trace element measurements performed in conjunction AFT and U‐Pb dating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Toxic heavy metals have been the focus of many investigations into chronic kidney disease of unknown aetiology (CKDu) within Sri Lanka. It has been hypothesised that exposure to nephrotoxic arsenic, cadmium and lead could play a role in the development of CKDu, and these metals have previously been found in unsafe concentrations in Sri Lankan rice. Traditional varieties of Sri Lankan rice remain popular due to their perceived health benefits, but their uptake of trace and toxic heavy metals remained unexplored. Here, we report a one-time, cross-sectional dataset on the concentrations of essential and toxic elements present in eleven samples of polished and unpolished traditional rice varieties, all regularly grown and sold in the Anuradhapura district, a CKDu hotspot. All rice was sourced from the same farm, with the exception of one store bought sample grown on another, unidentified farm. Cadmium concentrations varied significantly between varieties, and potentially unsafe concentrations of cadmium were detected in the store-bought sample (Suwadel, 113±13 μg kg−1). Elemental imaging of the grains revealed lead to be stored mainly in the rice bran, which is removed during polishing, while cadmium was distributed in the edible portion of the grain. Essential elements were generally higher in the traditional rice varieties than those reported for non-traditional varieties and are a potential source of trace elements for nutrient-deficient communities. The concentration of selenium, an element that plays a protective role in the kidneys, was too low to provide the minimum recommended intake. The methods developed in this study could be applied to a more comprehensive study of elemental uptake of rice under controlled growing conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the potential of laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS) U‐Pb dating for carbonate nodules in the Late Triassic Ischigualasto Formation of northwestern Argentina. We establish a fully characterized paragenetic sequence to guide the analysis of three pedogenic carbonates and compare the U‐Pb ages with published geochronology from volcanic ashes within the sedimentary succession. Our findings demonstrate the importance of interpreting U‐Pb data within a well‐defined paragenetic framework for accurate age interpretation of pedogenic carbonates. We observe variations in U‐Pb isotopic signatures across different generations of carbonate precipitates and identify syn‐pedogenic and early burial calcite cements as most suitable for precise dating. Respectively, these two calcite cements are interpreted as microcodium and crack‐lining calcite cements formed early in the paragenetic sequence during pedogenesis to early burial of the paleosols as they transitioned from the unsaturated vadose to saturated phreatic zone below the water table. The U‐Pb ages obtained from the carbonate nodules agree with the radioisotopic ages of volcanic ashes, supporting the validity of our dating strategy. These results contribute to advancing U‐Pb carbonate geochronology and highlight its increased potential for dating sedimentary records in the terrestrial realm. Future research should focus on replicating similar work on different carbonate nodules within the Ischigualasto Fm and expanding the application of LA‐ICP‐MS U‐Pb dating to other carbonate‐bearing formations, especially in successions with limited absolute ages or where volcanic ashes are sparse or absent. Plain Language Summary: Carbonate minerals that formed in fossil soils can provide valuable insights into past physical, biological, and chemical processes on Earth's surface. Despite their significance in reconstructing ancient climates and environments, determining the age of these fossil soils via uranium‐to‐lead dating has proven challenging. This difficulty arises from factors associated with soil carbonate minerals, including low uranium content, high lead content, complex formation chemistry, multiple formation episodes (generations), and potential for post‐formation chemical alteration. To address these issues, we first identified the order in which carbonate minerals formed within three samples from the Late Triassic Ischigualasto Formation of Argentina. Then, we dated each generation within each sample and compared the results to identify and understand the most optimal sample locations for dating. Analysis of our data shows that carbonate minerals formed due to biological processes near the surface as well as during the burial and submersion of the fossil soils below the water table are the most suitable for dating and approximate the timing of soil formation. Importantly, the ages from these soil carbonate samples align with ages from volcanic ashes found within the Ischigualasto Formation, thus validating our results and the potential to apply our strategy in other locations. The preparation of matrix-matched material for elemental quantitative analysis in rice flour matrix is proposed here for the first time as part of a feasibility study using the SN-ICP-MS and LA-ICP-MS methods. It was prepared via the spiking process in colloidal solution of rice flour with different levels of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb), followed by drying in a climatic chamber. Comparative studies of the results on external calibration and gravimetric standard addition ICP-MS approaches through the use of calibration standard solutions were discussed. Method bias from the external calibration method was investigated, demonstrating the systematic effect arising from the sample matrix. Characterizing the concentration of measurands was then reasonably proposed using the gravimetric standard addition ICP-MS. Using powdered rice matrix reference material for ICP-MS calibration following acid digestion, the study showed a good agreement of recovery studies. A feasibility study of the LA-ICP-MS method as a direct solid analysis performed on the matrix-matched standard was then discussed. In the study, large fluctuation of signals was found for constructing calibration curve, generating poor linearity, especially for As and Pb, although yttrium (Y) as internal standard was applied. This might be ascribed to a limited microscale of homogeneity, and particularly laser-induced preferential evaporation of volatile elements. Using a number of measured data points, the mean and median were statistically recommended to improve precision. An attempt to use of similar matrix in both standard and sample is a critical point to consider to minimize the elemental fractionation effect.
