A 2023 study estimated that 5% to 14% of parents in developed countries, including the US, regret their decision to have children. While most parents do not regret having kids, some do, and they often feel alone and hesitant to discuss their feelings. Parental regret can stem from various factors, including lack of choice or financial strain, but it is not limited to those in difficult circumstances. Many parents who regret their decision still love and care for their children deeply. Society tends to promote a singular narrative of pure joy in parenting, but acknowledging and supporting diverse experiences and choices could benefit both parents and children.
