The forests of the Western Ghats (WG) of India are a highly diverse ecosystem though altered over time by human interference. The Northern Western Ghats (NWG) differ in bioclimatic and geological characteristics from the rest of the Western Ghats, featuring a mix of forested and open landscapes. Human activities such as shifting cultivation, cutting, lopping, periodic fire, constructions (road and dam), and mining have further increased their fragmentation, leading to a decrease in biodiversity. While the region has been extensively investigated for its floristic diversity, quantitative ecological studies are limited. This review seeks to identify research gaps and new research directions in the forest ecology of the NWG by compiling various periodical studies carried out in the region. It covers various works on vegetation types, species diversity and composition, and forest degradation due to anthropogenic activities. We provide compiled comparative vegetation types applicable to the region. The present review also discusses works carried out on forest areas under various protection regimes, such as legally protected areas, sacred groves, and private forests, using quantitative and remote sensing tools. We believe that understanding the NWG as an entire unit using uniform methods is essential, and this review serves as an important step in achieving this. Rock outcrops are unique habitats in terms of their geological and ecological specializations, soil availability, water seasonality, and environmental extremes. These habitats have attracted the attention of many researchers worldwide in the last few decades. Indian rock outcrops spread throughout the country with more concentration in the Western Ghats region, supporting many endemic and unique habitat specialist species. Despite Indian outcrops having become hotspots for novel species discoveries in recent times, ecological studies on them are still in their infancy. In the present review, we discuss studies, research gaps, and the scope for future investigations on Indian outcrops. We also compare outcrop studies across the world with the Indian systems in order to understand their uniqueness and peculiarities. Literature and observations revealed the presence of 390 taxa on rock outcrops of the Western Ghats with various adaptive traits such as desiccation tolerance, succulence, carnivory, and geophytism, a trend common to most of the tropical outcrops. The dominance of Poaceae endemics, large extents of monocotyledonous mats, and underrepresentation of succulence are unique features of Indian rock outcrops. In the light of various disturbances, faced by Indian outcrops, further studies that would lay a foundation on which conservation strategies can be formulated are a want of time. Desiccation-tolerant vascular (DT) plants are predominant occupants of rock outcrops in tropical regions. Though rock outcrops are common landscapes in the Western Ghats (WG), a biodiversity hotspot in India, knowledge of DT plants in the region is poor. This study provides an overview of Indian DT vascular plants, emphasizing the WG, and includes an inventory of species with their habitat preferences. Outcrop species were scrutinized for their DT properties by seasonal field observations, followed by relative water content estimation protocols. The inventory revealed 62 DT species, many more than the earlier known nine species. Nine genera of DT plants are reported as new also in a global perspective, and Tripogon capillatus represent the first record of an epiphytic DT angiosperm. We also provide the first field observation-based proof of DT properties of the gesneriad Corallodiscus lanuginosus. Of the 62 species, 16 are Indian endemic, and 12 are exclusive to Western Ghat outcrops, highlighting WG's importance as a global DT hotspot. In addition to rock outcrops, partially shaded sites in forests are crucial habitats for DT species. Rock outcrops support specialist plant communities that are often adapted to highly seasonal climates and heterogeneous soil cover. However, the relationship between environmental parameters and plant functional types remains unexplored in many regions of the world, including the Northern Western Ghats (NWG) in India. In the present work, we characterised the vegetation of high and low elevation rock outcrops in the NWG, and investigate the relationship between plant functional types and environmental variables. Vegetation surveys were conducted on 16 high elevation and 14 low elevation sites using a transect and quadrat method. Floristic data were used to calculate plant diversity and plant functional type abundance. The relationship between vegetation and climatic (temperature, precipitation) and soil (soil carbon and nitrogen) variables was explored using cluster and ordination analysis. Rock outcrop sites were grouped into two clusters based on elevation, distance from the sea and mean diurnal range. Plant functional type abundance was related to macro-environmental variables such as temperature, precipitation and soil nutrients such as carbon and nitrogen. We inferred that the distribution and dominance of different plant functional types in the NWG are related to primarily by elevation (a proxy for temperature) and distance from the sea. The northern section of the Western Ghats is a biodiversity hotspot with a predominance of rock outcrops. Although these outcrops are characterized by environmental extremes, they support a large diversity of species, many of which are endemics. High-elevation rock outcrops of the Western Ghats exhibit two lithotypes of distinct geological origins, namely basalt mesa (BM) and high-level ferricrete (HLF). We examined the interrelation between environmental factors, lithotypes and functional type abundance. We recorded 265,447 individuals belonging to 127 taxa categorized under seven plant functional types in 128 quadrats from sixteen high-elevation rock outcrops. Cluster analysis separated the sites based on the lithotypes. Graminoids and Therophytes were the dominant functional types across both the lithotypes. Latitude, seasonality, soil carbon and nitrogen were the influential environmental factors. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) showed that based on environmental characteristics, the two lithotypes are significantly different from each other. Different plant functional types were associated with different environmental variables, as shown by canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Lithotype and levels of soil carbon and nitrogen together seem to shape the functional type abundance. Overall, we observed that there is a marginal difference in the vegetation across the two lithotypes of outcrops. When the habitat occupied by a specialist species is patchily distributed, limited gene flow between the fragmented populations may allow population differentiation and eventual speciation. 'Sky islands'—montane habitats that form terrestrial islands—have been shown to promote diversification in many taxa through this mechanism. We investigate floral variation in Impatiens lawii, a plant specialized on laterite rich rocky plateaus that form sky islands in the northern Western Ghats mountains of India. We focus on three plateaus separated from each other by ca. 7 to 17 km, and show that floral traits have diverged strongly between these populations. In contrast, floral traits have not diverged in the congeneric I. oppositifolia, which co-occurs with I. lawii in the plateaus, but is a habitat generalist that is also found in the intervening valleys. We conducted common garden experiments to test whether the differences in I. lawii are due to genetic differentiation or phenotypic plasticity. There were strong differences in floral morphology between experimental plants sourced from the three populations, and the relative divergences between population pairs mirrored that seen in the wild, indicating that the populations are genetically differentiated. Common garden experiments confirmed that there was no differentiation in I. oppositifolia. Field floral visitation surveys indicated that the observed differences in floral traits have consequences for I. lawii populations, by reducing the number of visitors and changing the relative abundance of different floral visitor groups. Western Ghats of India is rich in floristic diversity and endemism. However, being highly threatened with anthropogenic stressors, with only 6.8% of its original vegetation still extant, along with Sri Lanka it is considered as a biodiversity hotspot. It has been suggested that sacred groves in Western Ghats could act as refuge for the relic flora of this region. Sacred groves are the forest patches conserved since centuries due to religious beliefs and are the remnants of the climax vegetation containing endemic and endangered species of plants and animals. However, due to severe deforestation and urbanization, sacred groves are facing serious problems. In present investigation, sacred groves from Pune district, Maharashtra, were studied for their ecological role and their response to physical as well as degradation related parameters. Two hundred ninety six species of plants belonging to 100 families including 45 endemic species were recorded from these groves. Similarity between sacred groves is independent of distances accounting for only 30% for the groves as close as 2.5 km from each other. Physical parameters such as altitude and presence of streams are positively correlated with number of endemic species. Increase in the degradation including cutting, lopping; construction activities have affected the species richness across different sacred groves. Most of the limnological studies in India have focussed on a few taxa of large, permanent water bodies, and pond ecosystems, and related temporary water bodies are neglected. We present here a faunal inventory, with representative photographs, for a single, small temporary pond, reporting over 125 species of strictly aquatic fauna and 25 species of associated fauna, even though we did not identify some groups such as Protozoa, Diptera and nymphs of Odonata, etc. The identified species belong to seven taxa of vertebrates and invertebrates together. Arthropoda and Rotifera were the most species rich groups, observed with 83 and 45 representatives, respectively. Coleoptera were the most numerous in terms of species number. Such a small water body holds some endemics as well as otherwise very rare animals and so deserves better attention. This paper discusses the implementation of an Ethernet communications network in a ring that connects substations in a closed communications loop at a large industrial facility. Data are transmitted at protection speeds and must be dependable for industrial power system operation and maintenance applications. The redundant electric power system Ethernet communications network is used for a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system that automates industrial electric power system operations. Within individual substations and between substations, communications based on IEC 61850 protocols eliminate copper control wiring, which results in reduced cost, construction time, commissioning time, and wiring errors and makes future upgrades simpler. A fast load-shedding system uses the same communications network to stabilize system frequency in response to a loss of generation by detecting the events that lead to a power deficit and automatically responding by shedding load to balance generation and load in less than 40 ms. This paper focuses on integrating three major electrical control systems at a refinery onto one Ethernet network: a SCADA system for controlling and monitoring operations, a peer-to-peer high-speed communications-assisted protection scheme, and a fast load-shedding system. Sacred Groves are the forest patches dedicated to a local deity, which have been conserved since centuries and play a very important role in conserving many threatened plants as well as animal species. In the present work, we have studied fifteen sacred groves in Pune District for their floristic diversity. A total of 296 species were recorded of which five species show their northernmost distribution to the Western Ghats in the sacred groves of Pune District. Catchment landscape degradation and habitat modifications of freshwater ecosystems are a primary cause of biodiversity loss in riverine ecosystems all over the world. Many elements of the flora and fauna of freshwater ecosystems are sensitive to the changes in catchment land use and habitat modification. These sensitive taxa are also reliable indicators of freshwater ecosystem health. In the current study we investigate the seasonal and habitat distribution of Odonata (Insecta) across riparian land use types in Mula and Mutha river basins, northern Western Ghats, Maharashtra. There was a difference in the species composition across land use types and across seasons with highest diversity and abundance during the post monsoon period. The highest Odonata diversity was observed in urban areas followed by forest and agriculture fields. There was a loss of 31% of the odonate fauna in the study area over 50 years which could be due to rapid industrialization and urbanization of the region and consequent degradation of freshwater ecosystems.
