Deciding on the implementation or modification of steps in daily clinical care is a nuanced process that demands careful evaluation. This is crucial not only for selecting the most appropriate solution but also for achieving the best treatment outcome. Thus, implementing a workflow for treating cleft lip and/or palate patients with a presurgical orthodontic cleft-covering plate needs to consider objective factors, prioritized from most to least important: safety and quality level, user-friendliness, feasibility, and, finally, efficiency and cost. The goal of this workflow is to integrate CAD/CAM technologies into daily clinical routine to enhance technical and clinical efficiency, reduce the burden of cleft care, and simplify the implementation of these technologies in other facilities. To achieve this, a methodology based on intraoral scanning and additive manufacturing is employed to produce patient-specific passive palatal plates. The approach describes possible pitfalls and their resolution within the routine of a cleft centre, along with an exemplary case scenario. Comparative analysis between the digital workflow and the conventional process demonstrated the digital approach to be safer, higher in quality, more user-friendly, feasible, and cost- and time-effective than the conventional process. Objective: To evaluate the applicability of transplanted teeth in young patients with craniofacial anomalies Design: Observational study Setting: Comprehensive Centre for Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Malformations Patients/Participants: Patients with craniofacial anomalies who underwent tooth transplantation. Only children with complete clinical and radiological documentation and a follow-up period of at least 1.5 years were included. Interventions: Tooth transplantation Main Outcome Measure(s): Retrospective evaluation of clinical records, pre- and postoperative radiographs, and operative charts. Clinical characteristics of patients, preoperative parameters and postoperative outcome parameters were collected. Results: A total of 17 patients with 23 tooth transplantations were included. The median follow-up period was 6.7 years. The pooled survival and success rates were 91%. Notably, one out of two teeth that were transplanted into the bone grafted alveolar cleft site had to be extracted, which might indicating a higher risk for this procedure. In total, two transplanted teeth had to be extracted during the follow-up period, one due to external resorption and the other one due to perio-endo lesion. One patient needed endodontic treatment due to pulp necrosis. Conclusion: We consider tooth transplantation to be a reliable and suitable procedure in the dental rehabilitation of young patients with craniofacial anomalies and fitting concomitant circumstances. A single dose of psilocybin, a psychedelic that acutely causes distortions of space–time perception and ego dissolution, produces rapid and persistent therapeutic effects in human clinical trials1–4. In animal models, psilocybin induces neuroplasticity in cortex and hippocampus5–8. It remains unclear how human brain network changes relate to subjective and lasting effects of psychedelics. Here we tracked individual-specific brain changes with longitudinal precision functional mapping (roughly 18 magnetic resonance imaging visits per participant). Healthy adults were tracked before, during and for 3 weeks after high-dose psilocybin (25 mg) and methylphenidate (40 mg), and brought back for an additional psilocybin dose 6–12 months later. Psilocybin massively disrupted functional connectivity (FC) in cortex and subcortex, acutely causing more than threefold greater change than methylphenidate. These FC changes were driven by brain desynchronization across spatial scales (areal, global), which dissolved network distinctions by reducing correlations within and anticorrelations between networks. Psilocybin-driven FC changes were strongest in the default mode network, which is connected to the anterior hippocampus and is thought to create our sense of space, time and self. Individual differences in FC changes were strongly linked to the subjective psychedelic experience. Performing a perceptual task reduced psilocybin-driven FC changes. Psilocybin caused persistent decrease in FC between the anterior hippocampus and default mode network, lasting for weeks. Persistent reduction of hippocampal-default mode network connectivity may represent a neuroanatomical and mechanistic correlate of the proplasticity and therapeutic effects of psychedelics.Healthy adults were tracked before, during and after high doses of psilocybin and methylphenidate to assess how psychedelics can change human brain networks, and psilocybin was found to massively disrupt functional connectivity in cortex and subcortex with some changes persisting for weeks. Introduction: The clinical reasoning literature has increasingly considered context as an important influence on physicians' thinking. Physicians' relationships with patients, and their ongoing efforts to maintain these relationships, are important influences on how clinical reasoning is contextualised. The authors sought to understand how physicians' relationships with patients shaped their clinical reasoning. Methods: Drawing from constructivist grounded theory, the authors conducted semi‐structured interviews with primary care physicians. Participants were asked to reflect on recent challenging clinical experiences, and probing questions were used to explore how participants attended to or leveraged relationships in conjunction with their clinical reasoning. Using constant comparison, three investigators coded transcripts, organising the data into codes and conceptual categories. The research team drew from these codes and categories to develop theory about the phenomenon of interest. Results: The authors interviewed 15 primary care physicians with a range of experience in practice and identified patient agency as a central influence on participants' clinical reasoning. Participants drew from and managed relationships with patients while attending to patients' agency in three ways. First, participants described how contextualised illness constructions enabled them to individualise their approaches to diagnosis and management. Second, participants managed tensions between enacting their typical approaches to clinical problems and adapting their approaches to foster ongoing relationships with patients. Finally, participants attended to relationships with patients' caregivers, seeing these individuals' contributions as important influences on how their clinical reasoning could be enacted within patients' unique social contexts. Conclusion: Clinical reasoning is influenced in important ways by physicians' efforts to both draw from, and maintain, their relationships with patients and patients' caregivers. Such efforts create tensions between their professional standards of care and their orientations toward patient‐centredness. The claustrum is structurally connected with many cortical areas. A major hurdle standing in the way of understanding claustrum function is the difficulty in assessing the global functional connectivity (FC) of this structure. The primary issues lie in the inability to isolate claustrum signal from the adjacent insular cortex (Ins), caudate/putamen (CPu), and endopiriform nucleus (Endo). To address this issue, we used (7T) fMRI in the rat and describe a novel analytic method to study claustrum without signal contamination from the surrounding structures. Using this approach, we acquired claustrum signal distinct from Ins, CPu, and Endo, and used this claustrum signal to determine whole brain resting state functional connectivity (RSFC). Claustrum RSFC was distinct from the adjacent structures and displayed extensive connections with sensory cortices and the cingulate cortex, consistent with known structural connectivity of the claustrum. Background: Various conservative and surgical approaches exist to treat Robin sequence (RS), but their effects on facial profile and mandibular catch-up growth are unclear. A functional treatment concept, used in our centre for 25 years, includes an individualized palatal plate with a velo-pharyngeal extension and intensive feeding training. Methods: We performed a prospective study to objectively describe facial profiles in infants with RS treated with the above concept. Infants with isolated RS were admitted to our tertiary perinatal and national referral centre for craniofacial malformations between May 2018 and Nov 2019. Infants with RS received 3D-photographs during clinically indicated visits. Healthy controls were recruited from Dec 2018 to Sep 2019 and received 3D-photographs every 3 months. The digitally measured jaw index (JI), defined as alveolar overjet (O) x maxillary arch (U)/mandibular arch (L), and the soft tissue reference points A'-point, Nasion', B'-point angle (ANB'), describing the relative position of maxilla to mandible, were evaluated. Linear mixed models were used to examine time trajectories in JI and ANB'. Results: A total of 207 3D images, obtained in 19 infants with RS and 32 controls, were analysed. JI and ANB' decreased over time in both groups [for JI − 0.18 (95% CI − 0.25 to − 0.10); for ANB': − 0.40° per month [(95% CI − 0.48 to − 0.32)]] but remained lower in controls [for JI − 2.5 (95% CI − 3.2 to − 1.8); for ANB'-1.7° (95% CI − 2.4 to − 1.0)]. Also, the ANB' model showed a significant effect of the interaction term diagnosis x age. Conclusions: Based on longitudinal 3D images, we describe changes in objective parameters of facial profile in infants with and without RS during the first year of life. Premise: Glandular trichomes are implicated in direct and indirect defense of plants. However, the degree to which glandular and non‐glandular trichomes have evolved as a consequence of herbivory remains unclear, because their heritability, their association with herbivore resistance, their trade‐offs with one another, and their association with other functions are rarely quantified. Methods: We conducted a phylogenetic comparison of trichomes and herbivore resistance against the generalist caterpillar, Heliothis virescens, among tarweed species (Asteraceae: Madiinae) and a genetic correlation study comparing those same traits among maternal half‐sibs of three tarweed species. Results: Within a tarweed species, we found no evidence that herbivore growth rate decreased on tarweed individuals or maternal sib groups with more glandularity or denser trichomes. However, tarweed species with more glandularity and fewer non‐glandular trichomes resulted in slower‐growing herbivores. Likewise, a trade‐off between glandular and non‐glandular trichomes was apparent among tarweed species, but not among individuals or sib groups within a species. Conclusions: Our results suggest that this key herbivore does not select for trichomes as a direct defense in tarweed species. However, trichomes differed substantially among species and likely affect herbivore pressure on those species. Background: This study was conducted to determine surgical site infection (SSI) rates and potential risk factors as well as to evaluate antibiotic prophylaxis in orthognathic surgery. Methods: This retrospective observational study included patients who received orthognathic surgery. SSIs and their management were assessed for up to one year post-operatively. The applied antibiotic regime and other possible influencing factors (smoking, age, site of infection, drainage, duration of surgery, displacement distances, craniofacial malformations) were assessed. Results: In total 291 patient met the inclusion criteria (56.7% female). The mean age at surgery was 25.5 ± 8.5 years. Fifty-four patients (18.6%) were diagnosed with a craniofacial malformation. Relevant previous surgeries were documented in about one quarter of included patients (n = 75). Ninety-two percent of patients (n = 267) received intraoperative single-dose antibiotic prophylaxis. Surgical site infections occurred in 12.4% (n = 36) of patients. There was a significant association between postoperative infections and type of surgery (P =.037) as well as type of drainage (P =.002). Statistical analyses also revealed a higher prevalence of smokers (P =.036) and previous surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) (P =.018) in the infection group. Furthermore, no significant relationships were observed between postoperative infections and various co-factors (i.e. antibiotic regime, age at surgery, gender, associated craniofacial malformations, surgery duration, displacement distances, mandibular setback vs. advancement). Conclusion: Low rates of SSIs occurred following an intraoperative single-dose antibiotic regime. None of the SSIs had a significant effect on the final surgical outcome. Motor cortex (M1) has been thought to form a continuous somatotopic homunculus extending down the precentral gyrus from foot to face representations1,2, despite evidence for concentric functional zones3 and maps of complex actions4. Here, using precision functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) methods, we find that the classic homunculus is interrupted by regions with distinct connectivity, structure and function, alternating with effector-specific (foot, hand and mouth) areas. These inter-effector regions exhibit decreased cortical thickness and strong functional connectivity to each other, as well as to the cingulo-opercular network (CON), critical for action5 and physiological control6, arousal7, errors8 and pain9. This interdigitation of action control-linked and motor effector regions was verified in the three largest fMRI datasets. Macaque and pediatric (newborn, infant and child) precision fMRI suggested cross-species homologues and developmental precursors of the inter-effector system. A battery of motor and action fMRI tasks documented concentric effector somatotopies, separated by the CON-linked inter-effector regions. The inter-effectors lacked movement specificity and co-activated during action planning (coordination of hands and feet) and axial body movement (such as of the abdomen or eyebrows). These results, together with previous studies demonstrating stimulation-evoked complex actions4 and connectivity to internal organs10 such as the adrenal medulla, suggest that M1 is punctuated by a system for whole-body action planning, the somato-cognitive action network (SCAN). In M1, two parallel systems intertwine, forming an integrate–isolate pattern: effector-specific regions (foot, hand and mouth) for isolating fine motor control and the SCAN for integrating goals, physiology and body movement.Functional MRI studies across ages show that the classic homunculus of the motor cortex in humans is in fact discontinuous, alternating with action control-linked regions termed the somato-cognitive action network. Objectives: Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) have emerged as promising prophylactic episodic migraine treatments. The present study investigated biopsychosocial predictors and outcomes associated with formal, daily-life meditation practice in migraine patients undergoing MBI, and whether augmented mindfulness mechanistically underlies change. Methods: Secondary analyses of clinical trial data comparing a 12-week enhanced mindfulness-based stress reduction course (MBSR + ; n = 50) to stress management for headache (SMH; n = 48) were conducted. Results: Pre-treatment mesocorticolimbic system functioning (i.e., greater resting state ventromedial prefrontal cortex-right nucleus accumbens [vmPFC-rNAC] functional connectivity) predicted greater meditation practice duration over MBSR + (r = 0.58, p = 0.001), as well as the change in headache frequency from pre- to post-treatment (B = − 12.60, p = 0.02) such that MBSR + participants with greater vmPFC-rNAC connectivity showed greater reductions in headache frequency. MBSR + participants who meditated more showed greater increases in mindfulness (B = 0.52, p = 0.02) and reductions in the helplessness facet of pain catastrophizing (B = − 0.13, p = 0.01), but not headache frequency, severity, or impact. Augmented mindfulness mediated reductions in headache impact resulting from MBSR + , but not headache frequency. Conclusions: Mesocorticolimbic system function is implicated in motivated behavior, and thus, motivation-enhancing interventions might be delivered alongside mindfulness-based training to enhance meditation practice engagement. Formal, daily-life meditation practice duration appears to benefit pain-related cognitions, but not clinical pain, while mindfulness emerges as a mechanism of MBIs on headache impact, but not frequency. Further research is needed to investigate the day-to-day effects of formal, daily-life meditation practice on pain, and continue to characterize the specific mechanisms of MBIs on headache outcomes. Background: To assess the long-term functional orthodontic outcome of the Tübingen palatal plate (TPP) in children with Robin sequence (RS) in comparison to age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Methods: Between 09/2019 and 10/2020, we performed orthodontic assessments in 41 children at our Department of Orthodontics. Included were patients with RS (17 non-syndromic; four syndromic) and healthy controls (n = 22, average age in both groups 9.9 y). Facial analyses of 2D images, digital study casts and cephalometric measurements were made. Results: The orthodontic examinations showed no statistically significant group differences regarding functional extraoral, intraoral and pharyngeal parameters, or in skeletal patterns. The relationship between the upper and lower incisors was significantly increased (overjet 4 (2–10) vs. 3 (0–9) mm; p = 0.01) with a significant deficit in the lower face proportions (Jaw Index 4.15 (1.9–9.6) vs. 2.98 (0–9); p = 0.02; Facial convexity angle 157 (149–173) vs. 159 (149–170); p = 0.01). Conclusion: Children with RS treated with the TPP showed normal long-term functional orthodontic outcomes, thanks to the functional adaption of the stomatognathic system. Landscape architects and ecologists alike are embracing the opportunities urban areas present for restoring biodiversity. Despite sharing this goal, their efforts are rarely coordinated. For landscape architects, aesthetics and programming are at the forefront of design and must be given substantial attention, while ecologists look to scientific research to guide their decision-making. However, the lack of scientific research aimed at developing best ecological practices for native landscaping—particularly at small urban scales—make this difficult at a time when many residents are converting their lawns to more sustainable landscapes ("lawn conversions"). We survey literature from the fields of design and ecology to synthesize relevant information about small-scale urban landscaping projects and to identify instances in which practitioners from both fields are already "speaking the same language," only with slightly different vocabulary. To further promote transdisciplinary collaborations, we present a new glossary tool to highlight these parallel concepts across fields. We discuss specific situations in which design priorities can be aligned with ecological function and propose that more attention should be placed on traditional principles of garden design, including perception, complexity and repetition, rhythm and order, proportion and scale, and form and structure. Finally, we argue that each new urban lawn conversion presents an opportunity to test ecological theory at the site-scale, conduct much-needed research on the impacts of design principles on habitat potential, and promote a collaborative urban ecological design aesthetic. Migraine is a heterogeneous disorder with variable symptoms and responsiveness to therapy. Because of previous analytic shortcomings, variance in migraine symptoms has been inconsistently related to brain function. In the current analysis, we used data from two sites (n = 143, male and female humans), and performed canonical correlation analysis, relating restingstate functional connectivity (RSFC) with a broad range of migraine symptoms, ranging from headache characteristics to sleep abnormalities. This identified three dimensions of covariance between symptoms and RSFC. The first dimension related to headache intensity, headache frequency, pain catastrophizing, affect, sleep disturbances, and somatic abnormalities, and was associated with frontoparietal and dorsal attention network connectivity, both of which are major cognitive networks. Additionally, RSFC scores from this dimension, both the baseline value and the change from baseline to postintervention, were associated with responsiveness to mind-body therapy. The second dimension was related to an inverse association between pain and anxiety, and to default mode network connectivity. The final dimension was related to pain catastrophizing, and salience, sensorimotor, and default mode network connectivity. In addition to performing canonical correlation analysis, we evaluated the current clustering of migraine patients into episodic and chronic subtypes, and found no evidence to support this clustering. However, when using RSFC scores from the three significant dimensions, we identified a novel clustering of migraine patients into four biotypes with unique functional connectivity patterns. These findings provide new insight into individual variability in migraine, and could serve as the foundation for novel therapies that take advantage of migraine heterogeneity. Objectives: We aimed to determine the neurocognitive development of cleft palate patients with and without Robin sequence (RS). Materials and methods: Children with isolated RS with cleft palate and children with cleft palate only (CPO) were contacted at the age of 5–6 years. All RS children had undergone initial polygraphic sleep study (PG) with a mixed-obstructive apnea index (MOAI) of ≥ 3/h and were consequently treated with the Tuebingen palatal plate. A standardized clinical examination as well as a neuropediatric and neuropsychological examination included the Wechsler Pre-school and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WPPSI-III), Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC), and an assessment of developmental milestones. Results: In total, 44 children (22RS, 22CPO) were included. RS children were younger at study (70.5 ± 7.3 and 75.2 ± 7.5 months; P =.035). Both groups achieved the evaluated milestones within the normed time frame. WPPSI-III and K-ABC results showed no group differences. Mean values for Verbal IQ (101.8 ± 11.1 vs. 97.1 ± 15.7), Performance IQ (102.9 ± 12.1 vs. 99.6 ± 14.5), Processing Speed Quotient (98.9 ± 15.6 vs. 94.5 ± 15.7), Full-Scale IQ (103.2 ± 12.1 vs. 98.4 ± 15.3), and Sequential Processing Scale (102.1 ± 13.1 vs. 94.2 ± 17.3) were within the reference range (IQ 85–115) for RS and CPO children, respectively, indicating average performance of both groups. Conclusion: No neurocognitive, physical, or mental impairments were detected suggesting that RS children having upper airway obstruction (UAO) treated early and effectively may use their potential for an age-appropriate neurocognitive development. Clinical relevance: Tuebingen palatal plate treatment successfully releases UAO. Thus, isolated RS does not necessarily result in developmental delay or an impaired neurocognitive outcome. Lifelong learning in medicine is an important skill and ethical obligation, but many residents do not feel prepared to be effective self-directed learners when training ends. The learning sciences offer evidence to guide self-directed learning, but these insights have not been integrated into a practical and actionable plan for residents to improve their clinical knowledge and reasoning. We encourage residents to establish a self-directed learning plan, just as an athlete employs a training plan in the pursuit of excellence. We highlight four evidence-based learning principles (spaced practice, mixed practice, retrieval practice, and feedback) and four training strategies comprising a weekly training plan: case tracking, simulated cases, quizzing, and new evidence integration. We provide tips for residents to implement and refine their approach and discuss how residency programs can foster these routines and habits. By optimizing their scarce self-directed learning time with a training plan, residents may enhance patient care and their career satisfaction through their pursuit of clinical mastery. Biodiversity scientists must be fluent across disciplines; they must possess the quantitative, computational, and data skills necessary for working with large, complex data sets, and they must have foundational skills and content knowledge from ecology, evolution, taxonomy, and systematics. To effectively train the emerging workforce, we must teach science as we conduct science and embrace emerging concepts of data acumen alongside the knowledge, tools, and techniques foundational to organismal biology. We present an open education resource that updates the traditional plant collection exercise to incorporate best practices in twenty-first century collecting and to contextualize the activities that build data acumen. Students exposed to this resource gained skills and content knowledge in plant taxonomy and systematics, as well as a nuanced understanding of collections-based data resources. We discuss the importance of the extended specimen in fostering scientific discovery and reinforcing foundational concepts in biodiversity science, taxonomy, and systematics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We examine the substantive meaning of public opinion on government spending using open-ended data from an original survey. Belying the conventional wisdom on this subject, we find that public opinion on government spending is not reducible to views on social welfare programs. While most people do have specific associations with spending, in the aggregate, public associations span a wide range of government functions. Balance does not necessarily mean harmony, however. We find strong evidence of what we call substantive divergence along party lines in this area—when they think about spending, Republicans and Democrats envision different bundles of goods and services, on average. This is true even for opposing partisans with the same overall assessment of spending (e.g., those who say government spends too much). These findings bring fiscal conflict into sharper relief and also have broader implications for the conceptualization and measurement of differences across parties, as well as other political cleavages. This paper investigates the importance of status in household consumption and credit decisions using data from the Survey of Consumer Finances linked to tract-level data in the American Community Survey. We find that relatively richer households in the census tract use more debt and spend more on high-status cars. Also, county-level evidence shows that the consumption of high-status cars is higher in more unequal counties. These results suggest that greater income heterogeneity might shape household consumption and credit decisions, as relatively richer households signal their higher status to their neighbors through the consumption of visible status goods. We provide and test a theory explaining how and why racial attitudes shape public opinion on government spending in the United States. We hypothesize that many people think the government allocates money unfairly across racial groups, and "inequity aversion" leads them to reject spending as a result. Using data from an original survey, we find support for our theory in the sample as a whole, and within racial, partisan, and ideological subgroups. Indeed, unfairness views are comparable to partisanship in their relationship to opinion on spending. While prior work has shown that whites' racial attitudes are correlated with opinion on specific government programs, we show they shape opinion about the appropriate level of government spending writ large. The Paleo Data Working Group was launched in May 2020 as a driving force for broader conversations about paleontologic data standards. Here, we present an overview of the "community of practice" model used by this group to evaluate and implement data standards such as those stewarded by Biodiversity Information Standards (TDWG). A community of practice is defined by regular and ongoing interaction among individual members, who find enough value in participating, so that the group achieves a selfsustaining level of activity (Wenger 1998, Wenger and Snyder 2000, Wenger et al. 2002). Communities of practice are not a new phenomenon in biodiversity science, and were recommended by the recent United States National Academies report on biological collections (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine 2020) as a way to support workforce training, data-driven discoveries, and transdisciplinary collaboration. Our collective aim to digitize specimens and mobilize the data presents new opportunities to foster communities of practice that are circumscribed not by research agendas but rather by the need for better data management practices to facilitate research. Paleontology collections professionals in the United States have been meeting to discuss digitization semi-consistently in both virtual and in-person spaces for nearly a decade, largely thanks to support from the iDigBio Paleo Digitization Working Group. The need for a community of practice within this group focused on data management in paleo collections became apparent at the biodiversity_next Conference in October 2019, where we realized that work being done in the biodiversity standards community was not being informed by or filtering back to digitization and data mobilization efforts occurring in the paleo collections community. A virtual workshop focused on georeferencing for paleo in April 2020 was conceived as an initial pathway to bridge these two communities and provided a concrete example of how useful it can be to interweave practical digitization experience with conceptual data standards. In May 2020, the Paleo Data Working Group began meeting biweekly on Zoom, with discussion topics collaboratively developed, presented, and discussed by members and supplemented with invited speakers when appropriate. Topics centered on implementation of data standards (e.g., Darwin Core) by collections staff, and how standards can evolve to better represent data. An associated Slack channel facilitated continuing conversations asynchronously. Engaging domain experts (e.g., paleo collections staff) in the conceptualization of information throughout the data lifecycle helped to pinpoint issues and gaps within the existing standards and revealed opportunities for increasing accessibility. Additionally, when domain experts gained a better understanding of the information science framework underlying the data standards they were better able to apply them to their own data. This critical step of standards implementation at the collections level has often been slow to follow standards development, except in the few collections that have the funds and/or expertise to do so. Overall, we found the Paleo Data Working Group model of knowledge sharing to be mutually beneficial for standards developers and collections professionals, and it has led to a community of practice where informatics and paleo domain expertise intersect with a low barrier to entry for new members of both groups. Serving as a loosely organized voice for the needs of the paleo collections community, the Paleo Data Working Group has contributed to several initiatives in the broader biodiversity community. For example, during the 2021 public review of Darwin Core maintenance proposals, the Paleo Data Working Group shared the workload of evaluating and commenting on issues among its members. Not only was this efficient for us, but it was also effective for the TDWG review process, which sought to engage a broad audience while also reaching consensus. The Paleo Data Working Group has also served as a coordinated point of contact for adjacent and intersecting activities related to both data standards (e.g., those led by the TDWG Earth Sciences and Paleobiology Interest Group and the TDWG Collections Description Interest Group) and paleontological research (e.g., those led by the Paleobiology Database and the Integrative Paleobotany Portal project). Sustaining activities, like those of the Paleo Data Working Group, require consideration and regular attention. Support staff at iDigBio and collections staff focusing on digitization or data projects at their own institutions, as well as a consistent pool of drop-in and occasional participants, have been instrumental in maintaining momentum for the community of practice. Socializing can also help build the personal relationships necessary for maintaining momentum. To this extent, the Paleo Data Working Group Slack encourages friendly banter (e.g., the #pets-of-paleo channel), more general collectionsrelated conversations (e.g., the #physical-space channel), and space for those with subinterests to connect (e.g., the #morphology channel). While the focus of the group is on data, on an individual level, our group members find it useful to network on a wide variety of topics and this usefulness is critical to sustaining the community of practice. As we look forward to Digital Extended Specimen concepts and exciting developments in cyberinfrastructure for biodiversity data, communities of practice like that exemplified by the Paleo Data Working Group are essential for success. Creating FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) data requires buy-in from data providers, such as those in the paleo collections community. Even beyond FAIR, considering CARE (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, and Ethics) data means embracing participation from a broad spectrum of perspectives, including those without informatics experience. Premise: With digitization and data sharing initiatives underway over the last 15 years, an important need has been prioritizing specimens to digitize. Because duplicate specimens are shared among herbaria in exchange and gift programs, we investigated the extent to which unique biogeographic data are held in small herbaria vs. these data being redundant with those held by larger institutions. We evaluated the unique specimen contributions that small herbaria make to biogeographic understanding at county, locality, and temporal scales. Methods: We sampled herbarium specimens of 40 plant taxa from each of eight states of the United States of America in four broad status categories: extremely rare, very rare, common native, and introduced. We gathered geographic information from specimens held by large (≥100,000 specimens) and small (<100,000 specimens) herbaria. We built generalized linear mixed models to assess which features of the collections may best predict unique contributions of herbaria and used an Akaike information criterion‐based information‐theoretic approach for our model selection to choose the best model for each scale. Results: Small herbaria contributed unique specimens at all scales in proportion with their contribution of specimens to our data set. The best models for all scales were the full models that included the factors of species status and herbarium size when accounting for state as a random variable. Conclusions: We demonstrated that small herbaria contribute unique information for research. It is clear that unique contributions cannot be predicted based on herbarium size alone. Introduction: Peripheral nerve sheath tumours in children are a rare and heterogeneous group, consisting mostly of benign tumours as well as malignant neoplasms. Especially in the paediatric population, diagnostics and indication for therapy pose relevant challenges for neurosurgeons and paediatric neurologists alike. Most paediatric cases that need surgical intervention are associated to neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all paediatric cases treated at the Department of Neurosurgery in Tübingen between 2006 and 2017 for peripheral nerve sheath tumours. We analysed clinical signs, symptoms, histology, association to an underlying phacomatosis and sensory/motor function. Results: Of the 82 identified patients, the majority had NF1 (76.8%). Nine children bore a sporadic tumour without underlying phacomatosis (11%), 8 had NF2 (9.8%) and 2 schwannomatosis (2.4%), A total of 168 surgical interventions were performed, and 206 tumours were removed. Indication for surgery was in most instances significant tumour growth (45.2%) followed by pain (33.9%). New deficits led to surgery in 12.5% of interventions; malignancy was suspected in 8.3%. Histopathology revealed mostly neurofibromas (82.5%), divided into cutaneous neurofibromas (10.7%), infiltrating plexiform neurofibromas (25.7%) and peripheral nerve-born neurofibromas (46.1%). 12.1% of tumours were schwannomas, 2.9% MPNST, 1.5% ganglioneuroma (n = 3) and 1 hybrid-neurofibroma and perineurinoma each. Leading symptoms, such as pain and motor and sensory deficits, improved after 125/166 interventions (74.4%), remained unchanged following 39 interventions (23.2%) and worsened in 4 occasions (2.4%). Conclusion: Surgery is safe and effective for (neurofibromatosis associated) peripheral nerve sheath tumours in the paediatric population; however, management needs a multidisciplinary setting. We propose early surgical resection in paediatric patients with peripheral nerve sheath tumours with significant growth, or pain, or motor deficit, or suspected malignancy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diffusion of responsibility describes how individuals can underperform in circumstances of shared accountability. While not well studied in health care settings, this phenomenon is an unintended consequence of the health care sector’s complexity and fragmentation. This article considers 3 ways in which monetary and nonmonetary incentives can mitigate negative consequences of diffusion of responsibility. First, incentives should be finite and focused. Second, health care organizations can incentivize both individual and team performance. Third, organizations can use peer comparison feedback to amplify effective incentivizing strategies. Summary: Thermal storage systems are an essential component for increasing the share of renewable energies in residential heating and for the valorization of waste heat. A key challenge for the widespread application of thermal storage systems is their limited power‐to‐capacity ratio. One potential solution for this challenge is represented by direct‐contact latent heat storage systems, in which a phase change material (PCM) is in direct contact with an immiscible heat transfer fluid (HTF). To demonstrate the applicability of the direct‐contact concept for domestic hot water production, a PCM with a phase change temperature of 59°C is chosen. To enable cost‐efficient implementation of the storage system, a eutectic mixture of two salt hydrates, magnesium chloride hexahydrate and magnesium nitrate hexahydrate, is chosen as the PCM. One key aspect for the direct‐contact concept is that, during discharge, the HTF channels in the PCM do not become clogged during the solidification of the PCM. In this study, the formation and topology of the channels in direct‐contact systems under an optimized flow condition are investigated via visual observation and X‐ray computed tomography. The elucidation of the channel structure provides information on the melting and crystallization behaviors of the PCM, which are shown schematically. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Placebo effects in human clinical trials for depression treatment are robust and often comparable to drug effects. Placebo effects are traditionally difficult to study in rodents due to the slow-onset action of classical antidepressant drugs. We hypothesized that the rapid antidepressant actions of ketamine would allow modeling antidepressant placebo effects in rodents. Methods: Male and female CD-1 mice received either ketamine or saline injections with concomitant exposure to specific environmental conditioning stimuli, for a total of three drug/conditioning sessions each 2 weeks apart. Two weeks later, during an evocation phase, mice were exposed to the drug-paired conditioning stimuli or no conditioned stimuli followed by testing for motor stimulatory actions and antidepressant-like effects using the forced swim test. Negative (no ketamine administration at any time) and positive (acute ketamine administration prior to evocation testing) control groups were included as comparators. Results: Both male and female mice exhibited increased locomotor activity following ketamine administration during the conditioning phase, which was not observed following exposure to the conditioning stimuli. Exposure to the conditioning stimuli previously paired with ketamine, similar to an acute ketamine administration, reduced immobility time in the forced swim test both 1 and 24 h after administration in male, but not female, mice. Conclusions: These results represent the first evidence of antidepressant-like placebo-conditioned effects in an animal model. The developed approach can be used as a model to explore the neurobiological mechanisms of placebo effects, their possible sexually dimorphic effects, and relevance to mechanisms underlying antidepressant action. The second involves an intramolecular mechanism for q modulation. We incorporated a pendant coordinating carboxylate ligand with a 2, 4, 6, or 8 carbon linker to saturate ligand coordination to the GdIII ion. This renders the agent ineffective. Choice of host size may play a critical role in parasitoid success, a task that takes on added complications when dealing with concealed hosts, but most such studies of insect behaviour have only taken place in the laboratory. 2. This study investigates the success of a wasp (Alabagrus texanus: Braconidae) in finding host caterpillars Herpetogramma theseusalis (Crambidae) of the most effectively handled size hidden in shelters, in both the field and the laboratory. 3. First, the study tested wasp preference and success in parasitizing large, middle‐sized and small caterpillars (> 5, 3–5, < 3 mm) presented in the open, one at a time, in the laboratory. The wasps attacked (inserted or attempted to insert their ovipositor) a higher proportion of middle‐sized (3–5 mm) caterpillars compared with either small (< 3 mm) or large (> 5 mm) caterpillars. Naïve wasps attacked large caterpillars more often than did experienced wasps. Wasps responded to increasing caterpillar size by increasing the number of legs used to pin their prey rather than by increasing handling time. 4. The frequencies of visits to shelters in the field containing a majority of either large or middle‐sized caterpillars were then compared, followed by a test providing the wasps with similar choices under controlled laboratory conditions. Wasps most frequently visited shelters containing a majority of middle‐sized caterpillars both in the field and under controlled laboratory conditions. 5. It is widely believed that the extension of protection against employment discrimination to women through Title VII of the Civil Rights Act (CRA) was a fluke, the product of an attempted "killer amendment" by civil rights opponents gone awry. My analysis challenges this conventional wisdom, showing that the coalition of Republicans and southern Democrats in support of the sex amendment to Title VII was consistent with broader patterns of support for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in the early to mid‐20th century. In other words, support appears to have been sincere, not sophisticated—proponents preferred a CRA with the sex amendment to one without. I proceed to show that concern about the direct impact on women, and not simply the instrumental impact on labor, played an important role in motivating this support. But, I also find reason for caution in interpreting support for workplace rights as evidence of broad support for women's rights at this time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The claustrum is structurally connected with many cortical areas.A major hurdle standing in the way of understanding claustrum function is the difficulty in assessing the global functional connectivity (FC) of this structure. The primary issues lie in the inability to isolate claustrum signal from the adjacent insular cortex (Ins), caudate/putamen (CPu), and endopiriform nucleus (Endo). To address this issue, we used (7T) fMRI in the rat and describe a novel analytic method to study claustrum without signal contamination from the surrounding structures. Using this approach, we acquired claustrum signal distinct from Ins, CPu, and Endo, and used this claustrum signal to determine whole brain resting state functional connectivity (RSFC). Claustrum RSFC was distinct from the adjacent structures and displayed extensive connections with sensory cortices and the cingulate cortex, consistent with known structural connectivity of the claustrum. As we atomize and expand the digital representation of specimen information through data standards, it is critical to evaluate the implementation of these developments, including how well they serve discipline-specific needs. In particular, fossil specimens often present challenges because they require information to be captured that is seemingly parallel to, but not entirely aligned with, that of their extant counterparts. Previous work to evaluate data sharing practices of paleontology collections has shown an imbalance in the use of Darwin Core (DwC) (Wieczorek et al. 2012) terms and many instances of underutilized terms (Little 2018). To expand upon that broad assessment and encourage better adoption of evolving standards and data practices by fossil collections, a more in-depth review of term usage is necessary. Here we review specific DwC terms that are underutilized or that present challenges for fossil occurrence records, and we examine the subsequent impact on data discovery of paleo specimens. We conclude by sharing options for improving standards implementation within a paleo context. We see key patterns and challenges in current implementation of DwC in paleo collections, as evidenced by evaluations of the typical mappings found in occurrence records for fossil specimens, data flags applied by aggregators, and discussions within the paleo collections community. These can be organized into three broad groupings. Group 1: Some DwC terms (or classes of terms) are clear to implement, but are underutilized due to issues that are also found within the neontological community. Example: Location. In the case of terms related to the Location class, paleontology has a need for a way to deal with sensitive locality information. The sensitivity here typically relates to laws restricting the sharing of locality information to protect fossil sites versus neontological requirements to protect threatened, rare, or endangered species. The end goal of needing to fuzz locality information without completely making the specimen record undiscoverable or unusable is the same. There is a need for better education at the paleo data provider-level related to standards for recording and sharing information in this category, which could be based on existing neontological community standards. Group 2: A second group of DwC terms often seem clear to implement, but the terminology used to describe and define them might be unfamiliar to paleontologists or read as unnecessary for fossil occurrences. This uncertainty about the applicability of a term to paleo data can often result in data not being mapped or fully shared. Example: recordedBy (= collector). In these cases, a simple translation of what the definition means in verbiage that is familiar to paleontologists, or the inclusion of paleo-oriented examples in the DwC documentation, can make implementation clear. Group 3: A third group of issues relates to DwC terms, classes, and/or extensions that are more complicated in the context of fossil vs. neontological data. In some cases use of these terms is complicated for neontological data as well, but perhaps for different reasons. The terms impacted by these challenges can sometimes have the same general use, but due to the nature of fossil preservation, or because a term has a different meaning within the discipline of paleontology, additional layers of uncertainty or ambiguity are present. Examples: Resource Relationship/Interactions, Individual count, Preparations, Taxon. Review of these terms and their related classes and/or the extensions they are part of has revealed that they might require qualification, further explanation, additional vocabulary terms, or even the need for special handling instructions when data are ingested and normalized at the aggregator level. This group of issues is more complicated to resolve, but the problems are not intractable and can progress toward solutions through further discussion within the community, active participation in the standards development and review process, and development of clear guidelines. Strategically assessing these terms and generating discipline-specific guidelines to be used by the paleo community can improve the mobilization and discovery of fossil occurrence data. Documenting these paleo data practices not only helps data providers, it also increases the utility of these data within the broader research community by clearly outlining how the terms were used. Overall, this discipline-focused approach to understanding the implementation of data standards like DwC at the term level, helps to increase knowledge sharing across the paleo community, improves data quality and standards adoption, and moves these datasets towards alignment with best practices like the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data principles. The claustrum is a narrow subcortical brain structure that resides between the striatum and insular cortex. The function of the claustrum is not fully described, and while our previous work supports a role for the claustrum in top-down cognitive control of action, other evidence suggests the claustrum may be involved in detecting salient changes in the external environment. The anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and the anterior insular (aINS) are the two major participants in the salience network of human brain regions that activate in response to salient stimuli. While bidirectional connections between the ACC and the claustrum exist from mouse to non-human primate, the aINS connectivity with claustrum remains unclear, particularly in mouse. Here, we explored structural connections of the aINS with the claustrum and ACC through adeno-associated virus neuronal tract tracer injections into the ACC and aINS of the mouse. We detected sparse projections from the claustrum to the aINS and diffuse projections from the aINS to the borders of the claustrum were observed in some cases. In contrast, the insular cortex and endopiriform nucleus surrounding the claustrum had rich interconnectivity with aINS. Additionally, we observed a modest interconnectivity between ACC and the aINS. These data support the idea that claustrum neuron responses to salient stimuli may be driven by the ACC rather than the aINS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
