High river water temperature (Tw) extremes have been widely reported during drought conditions as extreme low‐flows often coincide with high atmospheric energy inputs. This has significant implications for freshwater ecosystem health and sustainable river management practices globally. However, the extent to which different meteorological and hydrological processes interact during droughts to govern Tw dynamics, and how this varies between environmental contexts, remains poorly understood. Here, we review the mechanisms controlling Tw dynamics during droughts across temperate, maritime environments, using the United Kingdom as a detailed case study. We evidence that Tw spikes have widely occurred during extreme low‐flow events observed within droughts, but such trends have been inconsistent due to varying hydroclimatic conditions and river basin controls. To better understand this, we re‐conceptualize the mechanisms governing drought‐induced Tw dynamics operating across three 'process sets': (i) 'energy flux dynamics' as non‐advective controls on Tw; (ii) the role of 'reach‐scale habitat conditions' in mediating non‐advective controls on Tw, including hydraulic properties (e.g., residence time) and physical conditions (e.g., riparian vegetation coverages, wetted perimeters); (iii) 'water source contributions' (surface water and groundwater) as advective heat and water flow controls. We review natural and anthropogenic influences affecting Tw controls within each process set and discuss how such mechanisms are likely to change under drought conditions. More systematic research (spanning various river environments and drought severities) is required to test such concepts, with existing scientific knowledge on drought‐induced Tw dynamics being largely gleaned from studies examining non‐extreme low‐flow conditions or with broader focuses (e.g., annual thermal dynamics). We conclude by highlighting critical future research questions that need to be answered to better model Tw dynamics during future droughts and for unmonitored sites. This study conducted an in-depth systematic review of literature to explore the context of water, sanitation and hygiene (WaSH) sustainability and resilience in refugee communities. Our results indicate growing concerns, given the two-decade waiting period for refugees to achieve repatriation/integration into host communities, and the bulk of their accommodation is largely in the Global South. This makes the sustainability of WaSH increasingly complex and depends on understanding the roles and interdependences among the factors in each specific refugee camp, and recognizes that it is not 'one-size-fits-all' solutions and the sustainability of one camp might not be suitable for other camps. In this work, the off-state characteristics of AlScN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) were studied and directly compared to an AlGaN- and an AlN-HEMT grown in the same MOCVD. Pinch-off instability and leaky capacitive measurements were observed for AlScN-based HEMTs, which was correlated with a higher ideality factor and lower effective potential barrier height than the AlGaN and AlN-HEMTs. However, the reverse bias characteristics exhibited a sudden drain-current increase without a significant increase in gate-leakage current. The drain-leakage current is assumed to be related to a parasitic channel across the AlScN-barrier as a result of trap-assisted carrier transport with a Poole–Frenkel characteristic. The demonstrated pinch-off instability led to significant gain expansion in load-pull measurements and early soft-breakdown, which, in turn, limits the achievable voltage-margin. Many terrestrial group-hunters cooperate to kill prey but then compete for their share with dominance being a strong predictor of prey division. In contrast, little is known about prey division in group-hunting marine predators that predominately attack small, evasive prey (e.g. fish schools). We identified individual striped marlin (Kajikia audax) hunting in groups. Groups surrounded prey but individuals took turns attacking. We found that competition for prey access led to an unequal division of prey among the predators, with 50% of the most frequently attacking marlin capturing 70–80% of the fish. Neither aggression, body size nor variation in hunting efficiency explained this skewed prey division. We did find that newly arrived groups of marlin gained on average more access to the prey. This raises the possibility that newly arrived marlin were hungrier and more motivated to feed. However, this result does not necessarily explain the unequal prey division among the predators because the skew in prey captures was found at the level of these groups. Dynamic prey division is probably widespread but under-reported in marine group-hunters and the inability of individuals to monopolize prey until satiation likely reduces the importance of social hierarchies for prey division. A fourth of the global seabed sediment volume is buried at depths where temperatures exceed 80 °C, a previously proposed thermal barrier for life in the subsurface. Here, we demonstrate, utilizing an extensive suite of radiotracer experiments, the prevalence of active methanogenic and sulfate-reducing populations in deeply buried marine sediment from the Nankai Trough subduction zone, heated to extreme temperature (up to ~120 °C). The small microbial community subsisted with high potential cell-specific rates of energy metabolism, which approach the rates of active surface sediments and laboratory cultures. Our discovery is in stark contrast to the extremely low metabolic rates otherwise observed in the deep subseafloor. As cells appear to invest most of their energy to repair thermal cell damage in the hot sediment, they are forced to balance delicately between subsistence near the upper temperature limit for life and a rich supply of substrates and energy from thermally driven reactions of the sedimentary organic matter. Introduction: Although suicide claims more lives than war and homicide, we still have no sufficient and effective methods either for its prediction or for its prevention. Our screening methods are laborous and subjective both on the side of the patient and on the side of the clinician. Understanding the genetic background of suicidal behaviour would help identify biomarkers for screening as well as pathways as potential targets for novel intervention and prevention approaches. However, in spite of a number of GWAS studies, results are few and rarely replicate, and generally accurate phenotyping and sufficient consideration of environmental stressors is also missing. Objectives: In our present study we performed a genome-wide analysis study for suicidal ideation in interaction with early childhood traumas in a deep-phenotyped general population sample. Methods: Our analysis used data from 1800 volunteers in the NewMood project. As outcome phenotype the suicidal ideation item of the Brief Symptom Inventory was used. A modified version of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire was used to assess early adverse experiences. A genome-wide association analysis was performed with Plink 1.9, including a total of 3,474,641 variants after quality control steps, followed by genome-wide by environment interaction analyses. Our models included control variables for sex, age, and the top 10 genomic principal components. Functional annotation of SNPs was carried out using FUMA v1.5.6, gene-based tests were performed using MAGMA v1.08. Results: 7 SNPs met suggestive significance in main effect analyses, of which 2 reached genome-wide significance including rs79912020 (p=3.21E-10, β=0.746) and rs10236520 (p=1.71E-08, β=0.484), with no significant findings in gene-based tests. Interaction analyses with childhood adversities yielded 31 SNPs that met genome-wide significance, including rs7983955 (p=2.28E-11, β=0.182), rs141039461 (p=3.90E-11, β=0.0541), rs12692827 (p=3.69E-10, β=0.0612) as the top SNPs. In interaction with childhood adversities, 31 genes showed a significant association in gene-based tests, including RBFOX1 (p=1.09E-10), GRM7 (p=1.20E-10), MTCH1 (p=5.59E-09), and CDH13 (p=6.60E-09) as the most significant findings. Conclusions: Our results indicate several important novel SNPs associated with suicidal ideation when considered in interaction with the effect of childhood adversities. Furthermore, gene-based analyses replicate several genes playing a key role in central nervous system function such as GRM7 (encoding metabotropic glutamate receptor 7) or previously implicated in association with suicide (CDH13) or suicide-related factors such as aggression (RBFOX1). Rivers transport contaminant microorganisms (including fecal indicator bacteria and human pathogens) long distances downstream of diffuse and point sources, posing a human health risk. We present a mobile‐immobile model that incorporates transport as well as immobilization and remobilization of contaminant microbes and other fine particles during baseflow and stormflow. During baseflow conditions, hyporheic exchange flow causes particles to accumulate in streambed sediments. Remobilization of stored particles from streambed sediments occurs slowly during baseflow via hyporheic exchange flow, while remobilization is vastly increased during stormflow. Model predictions are compared to observations over a range of artificial and natural flood events in the dairy contaminated Topehaehae Stream, New Zealand. The model outputs closely matched timing and magnitude of E. coli and turbidity observations through multiple high‐flow events. By accounting for both state‐of‐flow and hyporheic exchange processes, the model provides a valuable framework for predicting particle and contaminant microbe behavior in streams. Plain Language Summary: Contaminant microorganisms, including the bacterial indicator E. coli, and various disease‐causing bacteria, viruses, and pathogens, are highly episodic in rivers—with typically low‐contaminant microorganism concentrations during low flows that are 100− fold or more increased during storms. In this letter, we demonstrate a digital correction method for extending the dynamic range of a six-port radar system based on detector diodes. An individual diode gain is considered to depend on output voltage, which can be approximated as a linear function in order to extrapolate the diode’s square-law response to higher input powers. The individual diode coefficients are extracted during an initial calibration measurement utilizing the interferometric working principle. A six-port junction in combination with power detectors based on Si Schottky diodes operating at 24 GHz has been employed to validate the concept. Reduction of the third- and fifth-order harmonics of up to 35 and 22 dB, respectively, has been achieved at the highest input power of 8 dBm. The correction was applied for a wide range of operating conditions. As a result, the increase in phase error under large-signal and high power operation is effectively compensated and remains low under small-signal conditions. Introduction: Depression is a highly prevalent, multifactorial, complex disorder, its etiology is assumed to involve both genetic and environmental factors. Genetic factors, including biological clock genes such as CLOCK and SIRT1 , have been linked to depression, particularly its symptom related sleep disturbances. Environmental factors also play a crucial role in the background of depression, particularly in interaction with genetic factors. Known environmental stress factors include stress caused negative life events or childhood adversities. Objectives: This study aims to delve into the chronotype-specific impacts of genes previously correlated with circadian functionality on the pathomechanism of depression in interaction with environmental stress factors. Methods: A genome-wide association study on the 'morning chronotype' phenotype was conducted with Plink2, utilizing data from the UK Biobank discovery sample (N = 139135). Using LDPred2we derived a polygenic risk score (PRS) for the NewMood Hungarian dataset (N = 1820). We performed pathway-specific analyses including genes implicated within the genetic pathway, drawing on prior research findings. Specifically, we selected the top genes (with a false discovery rate-corrected p-value < 0.05) from the "responders vs. non-responders" analysis conducted by Jerome C. Foo et al.Transl Psychiatry 2019; 9 343). We performed a main effect analysis investigating the pathway specific PRS's effect on BSI depression scores and interaction analyses using life course (number of negative life events in the past life) and recent (number of negative life events in the past year) stress scores to investigate how the interaction term predicts depression in our target sample. Results: Our primary analysis revealed a nominally significant protective effect (beta = -20.90938, p = 0.070218). Subsequently, in the context of our interaction analysis, we identified significant risk associations, both with lifetime stress (beta = 13.7416, p = 0.0171) and recent stress (beta = 24.6034, p = 0.0038) Conclusions: Our study unveiled a protective role in our primary analysis, juxtaposed with risk associations in our interaction analyses. This intriguing dichotomy underscores that this genetic pathway, associated with circadian dysregulation, exerts a protective influence in association with the morning chronotype. However, it transitions into a predisposing factor for depression when influenced by environmental stress factors. Considering these findings, our study substantiates the hypothesis that both circadian genes and chronotype contribute to the pathogenesis and clinical manifestation of depression. The fate of plastic debris entering the oceans is largely unconstrained. Currently, intensified research is devoted to the abiotic and microbial degradation of plastic floating near the ocean surface for an extended period of time. In contrast, the impacts of environmental conditions in the deep sea on polymer properties and rigidity are virtually unknown. Here, we present unique results of plastic items identified to have been introduced into deep-sea sediments at a water depth of 4150 m in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean more than two decades ago. The results, including optical, spectroscopic, physical and microbial analyses, clearly demonstrate that the bulk polymer materials show no apparent sign of physical or chemical degradation. Solely the polymer surface layers showed reduced hydrophobicity, presumably caused by microbial colonization. The bacterial community present on the plastic items differed significantly (p < 0.1%) from those of the adjacent natural environment by a dominant presence of groups requiring steep redox gradients (Mesorhizobium, Sulfurimonas) and a remarkable decrease in diversity. The establishment of chemical gradients across the polymer surfaces presumably caused these conditions. Our findings suggest that plastic is stable over extended times under deep-sea conditions and that prolonged deposition of polymer items at the seafloor may induce local oxygen depletion at the sediment-water interface. Spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (SP-STM) experiments on ultrathin films with non-collinear spin textures demonstrate that resonant tunneling allows for atomic-scale spin-sensitive imaging in real space at tip-sample distances of up to 8 nm. Spin-polarized resonance states evolving between the foremost atom of a magnetic probe tip and the opposed magnetic surface atom are found to provide a loophole from the hitherto existing dilemma of losing spatial resolution when increasing the tip-sample distance in a scanning probe setup. Bias-dependent series of SP-STM images recorded via resonant tunneling reveal spin sensitivity at resonance conditions, indicating that the spin-polarized resonance states act as mediators for the spin contrast across the nm-spaced vacuum gap. With technically feasible distances in the nm regime, resonant tunneling in SP-STM qualifies for a spin-sensitive read-write technique with ultimate lateral resolution in future spintronic applications. Linking morphological differences in foraging adaptations to prey choice and feeding strategies has provided major evolutionary insights across taxa. Here, we combine behavioural and morphological approaches to explore and compare the role of the rostrum (bill) and micro-teeth in the feeding behaviour of sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) and striped marlin (Kajikia audax) when attacking schooling sardine prey. Behavioural results from high-speed videos showed that sailfish and striped marlin both regularly made rostrum contact with prey but displayed distinct strategies. Marlin used high-speed dashes, breaking schools apart, often contacting prey incidentally or tapping at isolated prey with their rostra; while sailfish used their rostra more frequently and tended to use a slower, less disruptive approach with more horizontal rostral slashes on cohesive prey schools. Capture success per attack was similar between species, but striped marlin had higher capture rates per minute. The rostra of both species are covered with micro-teeth, and micro-CT imaging showed that species did not differ in average micro-tooth length, but sailfish had a higher density of micro-teeth on the dorsal and ventral sides of their rostra and a higher amount of micro-teeth regrowth, suggesting a greater amount of rostrum use is associated with more investment in micro-teeth. Our analysis shows that the rostra of billfish are used in distinct ways and we discuss our results in the broader context of relationships between morphological and behavioural feeding adaptations across species. A scanning tunneling microscope for spin-resolved studies of dynamic systems is presented. The cryogenic setup allows the scanning tunneling microscope to achieve a cutoff frequency beyond 26 GHz at the tunnel junction and to be operable at temperatures of 1.1 K–100 K in a magnetic field of up to 3 T. For this purpose, the microscope and its wiring as well as the associated cryostat system were specially designed and manufactured. For sample preparation, an ultrahigh vacuum system was developed, which is equipped with modular preparation platforms. Measurements showing the characteristics of the scanning tunneling microscope in the time and frequency domain are presented. As a proof of concept, experimental data of the Pd/Fe/Ir(111) sample system at 95 K in a magnetic field of 3 T are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Novel observation techniques (e.g., smart tracers) for characterizing coupled hydrological and biogeochemical processes are improving understanding of stream network transport and transformation dynamics. In turn, these observations are thought to enable increasingly sophisticated representations within transient storage models (TSMs). However, TSM parameter estimation is prone to issues with insensitivity and equifinality, which grow as parameters are added to model formulations. Currently, it is unclear whether (or not) observations from different tracers may lead to greater process inference and reduced parameter uncertainty in the context of TSM. Herein, we aim to unravel the role of in‐stream processes alongside metabolically active (MATS) and inactive storage zones (MITS) using variable TSM formulations. Models with one (1SZ) and two storage zones (2SZ) and with and without reactivity were applied to simulate conservative and smart tracer observations obtained experimentally for two reaches with differing morphologies. As we show, smart tracers are unsurprisingly superior to conservative tracers when it comes to partitioning MITS and MATS. However, when transient storage is lumped within a 1SZ formulation, little improvement in parameter uncertainty is gained by using a smart tracer, suggesting the addition of observations should scale with model complexity. Importantly, our work identifies several inconsistencies and open questions related to reconciling time scales of tracer observation with conceptual processes (parameters) estimated within TSM. Approaching TSM with multiple models and tracer observations may be key to gaining improved insight into transient storage simulation as well as advancing feedback loops between models and observations within hydrologic science. The impedance spectra are measured for protonated and deuterated clathrates, HClO4·5.5H2O and DClO4·5.5D2O, between 10 and 300 K. The conductance is investigated between 80 K and room temperature and the dielectric constant between 10 and 120 K. The data show deviation from the Arrhenius behavior of conductance in the low-temperature regime. A description of proton conductivity is developed on the basis of quantum theory of an elementary act of proton tunneling between donor–acceptor sites interacting with environmental fluctuations. Several models of the elementary act are considered. The mechanism, most consistent with the obtained data, incorporates—strong coupling of the proton with local vibrational modes of the closest environment and system diabatic transitions along these vibrational ‘‘coordinates’’—fluctuations of the tunneling barrier for the proton. At low temperatures the motion along the vibrational coordinates is no longer purely classical and the slow mode tunneling takes place. The latter gives rise to a curvature in the Arrhenius plots apprehended as a decrease of the apparent activation energy at lower temperatures. This study elucidates a mechanochemical approach to synthesize a microporous thiophene polymer via oxidative polymerization. Utilizing a design of experiments approach we optimized the reaction conditions leading to complete conversion and a polymer with a surface area of up to 1850 m2 g−1– almost twice as high as the material prepared by solution-based polymerization. Abstract: Stream metabolism is a fundamental, integrative indicator of aquatic ecosystem functioning. However, it is not well understood how heterogeneity in physical channel form, particularly in relation to and caused by in‐stream woody debris, regulates stream metabolism in lowland streams. We combined conservative and reactive stream tracers to investigate relationships between patterns in stream channel morphology and hydrological transport (form) and metabolic processes as characterized by ecosystem respiration (function) in a forested lowland stream at baseflow. Stream reach‐scale ecosystem respiration was related to locations (“hotspots”) with a high abundance of woody debris. In contrast, nearly all other measured hydrological and geomorphic variables previously documented or hypothesized to influence stream metabolism did not significantly explain ecosystem respiration. Our results suggest the existence of key differences in physical controls on ecosystem respiration between lowland stream systems (this study) and smaller upland streams (most previous studies) under baseflow conditions. As such, these findings have implications for reactive transport models that predict biogeochemical transformation rates from hydraulic transport parameters, for upscaling frameworks that represent biological stream processes at larger network scales, and for the effective management and restoration of aquatic ecosystems. A new, XPS-based approach to quantitative and nondestructive determination of the chemical and phase layer composition of multicomponent multilayer films is proposed. It includes a new method for subtracting the background of repeatedly inelastically scattered photoelectrons, taking into account the inhomogeneity of inelastic scattering over depth; a new way of decomposing a photoelectron line into component peaks, taking into account the physical nature of various decomposition parameters; solution of the problem of subtracting the background and decomposing the photoelectron line simultaneously; and determination of the thickness of the layers of a multilayer target using a simple equation. High throughput analysis using amplicon-based next-generation sequencing (NGS) of HLA class I genes in samples of registered stem cell donors of the German Stem Cell Donor Registry Düsseldorf revealed 151 novel variants. In addition, four new variants were identified in well-defined samples obtained from the UCLA International Cell Exchange program. New alleles included 37 HLA-A, 57 HLA-B, and 61 HLA-C variant alleles. All variants were confirmed by NGS of HLA-A, HLA-B, and HLA-C genes including the respective 5' and 3' untranslated regions as well as Sanger sequence analysis. Mainly, the variants encompass single nucleotide changes in intronic as well as exonic parts of the genes. We identified intronic variations in 114 new alleles, nonsynonymous nucleotide changes in 25 alleles, synonymous nucleotide changes in nine alleles, and three hybrid alleles. Four alleles carry exonic deletions or insertions resulting in frameshift of peptide translation. Two novel alleles of HLA-C were shown to result in splicing defects of the transcript. Abstract: Soil‐surface temperature acts as a master variable driving nonlinear terrestrial ecohydrological, biogeochemical, and micrometeorological processes, inducing short‐lived or spatially isolated extremes across heterogeneous landscape surfaces. However, subcanopy soil‐surface temperatures have been, to date, characterized through isolated, spatially discrete measurements. Using spatially complex forested northern peatlands as an exemplar ecosystem, we explore the high‐resolution spatiotemporal thermal behavior of this critical interface and its response to disturbances by using Fiber‐Optic Distributed Temperature Sensing. Soil‐surface thermal patterning was identified from 1.9 million temperature measurements under undisturbed, trees removed and vascular subcanopy removed conditions. Removing layers of the structurally diverse vegetation canopy not only increased mean temperatures but it shifted the spatial and temporal distribution, range, and longevity of thermal hot spots and hot moments. We argue that linking hot spots and/or hot moments with spatially variable ecosystem processes and feedbacks is key for predicting ecosystem function and resilience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Iron-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with varying porosity are converted by pyrolysis into iron/carbon catalysts with predetermined composition and tailored pore structural features for the Fischer–Tropsch synthesis of lower C2–C4 olefins. Significantly higher activity arises for catalysts with higher porosity and decreased iron particle size derived from hierarchical MOF xerogel/aerogel precursors as compared to a purely microporous MOF. The costs and benefits of group living often depend on the spatial position of individuals within groups and the ability of individuals to occupy preferred positions. For example, models of predation events for moving prey groups predict higher mortality risk for individuals at the periphery and front of groups. We investigated these predictions in sardine (Sardinella aurita) schools under attack from group hunting sailfish (Istiophorus platypterus) in the open ocean. Sailfish approached sardine schools about equally often from the front and rear, but prior to attack therewas a chasing period in which sardines attempted to swim away from the predator. Consequently, all sailfish attacks were directed at the rear and peripheral positions of the school, resulting in higher predation risk for individuals at these positions. During attacks, sailfish slash at sardines with their bill causing prey injury including scale removal and tissue damage. Sardines injured in previous attacks were more often found in the rear half of the school than in the front half. Moreover, injured fish had lower tail-beat frequencies and lagged behind uninjured fish. Injuries inflicted by sailfish bills may, therefore, hinder prey swimming speed and drive spatial sorting in prey schools through passive self-assortment. We found only partial support for the theoretical predictions from current predator-prey models, highlighting the importance of incorporating more realistic predator-prey dynamics into these models. Background: Child maltreatment (CM) has severe effects on psychological and physical health. The hypothalamicpituitary- adrenal (HPA) axis, the major stress system of the body, is dysregulated after CM. The analysis of cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in scalp hair presents a new and promising methodological approach to assess chronic HPA axis activity. This study investigated the effects of CM on HPA axis activity in the last trimester of pregnancy by measuring the two important signaling molecules, cortisol and DHEA in hair, shortly after parturition. In addition, we explored potential effects of maternal CM on her offspring's endocrine milieu during pregnancy by measuring cortisol and DHEA in newborns' hair. Methods: CM was assessed with the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Cortisol and DHEA were measured in hair samples of 94 mothers and 30 newborns, collected within six days after delivery. Associations of maternal CM on her own and her newborn's cortisol as well as DHEA concentrations in hair were analyzed with heteroscedastic regression models. Results: Higher CM was associated with significantly higher DHEA levels, but not cortisol concentrations in maternal hair. Moreover, maternal CM was positively, but only as a non-significant trend, associated with higher DHEA levels in the newborns' hair. Conclusions: Results suggest that the steroid milieu of the mother, at least on the level of DHEA, is altered after CM, possibly leading to non-genomic transgenerational effects on the developing fetus in utero. Indeed, we observed on an explorative level first hints that the endocrine milieu for the developing child might be altered in CM mothers. These results need extension and replication in future studies. Background and Objectives It has been reported that immature platelets may indicate imminent platelet (PLT) recovery following intensive chemotherapy and/or haematopoietic stem cell transplantation with the perspective to withhold unnecessary transfusions. The objective of our prospective study was to test immature PLTs as measured by two haematology analysers to predict PLT recovery. Material and Methods This study monitored 51 courses of severe thrombocytopenia after chemotherapy in 35 adult haematology/oncology patients starting at a PLT count <70 × 109/l until PLT recovery (>20 × 109/l) or discharge from hospital. Immature platelets as measured by immature platelet fraction (IPF) (Sysmex XE-5000) and retPLT (Abbott CD-Sapphire) as well as reticulocyte and leucocyte count were evaluated regarding their usefulness to predict PLT recovery. Furthermore, the influence of platelet concentrate (PC) transfusions upon IPF and retPLT was assessed. Results With beginning of thrombocytopenia, most patients demonstrated elevated IPF% (median 8·6%) and retPLT% (median 6·8%). These elevated values significantly dropped after transfusions of PCs. IPF and retPLT values during nadir and at imminent PLT recovery were largely overlapping and receiver operating characteristics analysis demonstrated poor separation between both clinical situations. A reasonable cut-off could not be established to prospectively predict imminent PLT recovery for either of the parameters investigated. Conclusion Measurements of IPF and retPLT lack predictive power regarding imminent PLT recovery in patients with severe thrombocytopenia following intensive chemotherapy. The ecohydrological impact of tree-canopy removal on moss and peat, which provide a principal carbon store, is just starting to be understood. Different mosses have contrasting contributions to carbon and water fluxes (e.g., Sphagnum fuscum, Pleurozium schreberi) and are strongly influenced by tree-canopy cover. Changes in tree-canopy cover may therefore lead to long-term shifts in species composition and associated ecohydrological function. However, the medium-term response to such disturbance, the associated lag in this transition to a new ecohydrological and biogeochemical regime, is not understood in detail. We investigate this medium-term (4 years) ecohydrological, biogeochemical, and species compositional response to tree-canopy removal using a randomized plot design within a northern peatland. This is the only study to test for the influence of increased light alone. We demonstrate that changes in treatment plots 4 years after tree-canopy removal were not significant. Notably, P. schreberi and S. fuscum remained within their respective plots post treatment, and there was no significant difference in plot resistance to evapotranspiration or carbon exchange. Results show that tree-canopy removal alone has little impact on bryophyte ecohydrology in the short or medium-term. This resistance to disturbance contrasts strongly with short-term changes observed within mineral soils, suggesting that concurrent shifts in the large scale hydrology induced within such disturbances are necessary to cause rapid ecohydrological transitions. Understanding this lagged response is critical to determine the strength of medium to long-term negative ecohydrological feedbacks within peatlands in addition to carbon and water fluxes on a decadal timescale in response to disturbance. Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) technology enables downhole temperature monitoring to study hydrogeological processes at unprecedentedly high frequency and spatial resolution. DTS has been widely applied in passive mode in site investigations of groundwater flow, in-well flow, and subsurface thermal property estimation. However, recent years have seen the further development of the use of DTS in an active mode (A-DTS) for which heat sources are deployed. A suite of recent studies using A-DTS downhole in hydrogeological investigations illustrate the wide range of different approaches and creativity in designing methodologies. The purpose of this review is to outline and discuss the various applications and limitations of DTS in downhole investigations for hydrogeological conditions and aquifer geological properties. To this end, we first review examples where passive DTS has been used to study hydrogeology via downhole applications. Secondly, we discuss and categorize current A-DTS borehole methods into three types. These are thermal advection tests, hybrid cable flow logging, and heat pulse tests. We explore the various options with regards to cable installation, heating approach, duration, and spatial extent in order to improve their applicability in a range of settings. These determine the extent to which each method is sensitive to thermal properties, vertical in-well flow, or natural gradient flow. Our review confirms that the application of DTS has significant advantages over discrete point temperature measurements, particularly in deep wells, and highlights the potential for further method developments in conjunction with other emerging hydrogeophysical tools. Large amounts of methane are delivered by fluids through the erosive forearc of the convergent margin offshore of Costa Rica and lead to the formation of cold seeps at the sediment surface. Besides mud extrusion, numerous cold seeps are created by landslides induced by seamount subduction or fluid migration along major faults. Most of the dissolved methane migrating through the sediments of cold seeps is oxidized within the benthic microbial methane filter by anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). Measurements of AOM and sulfate reduction as well as numerical modeling of porewater profiles revealed a highly active and efficient benthic methane filter at the Quepos Slide site, a landslide on the continental slope between the Nicoya and Osa Peninsula. Integrated areal rates of AOM ranged from 12.9 ± 6.0 to 45.2 ± 11.5 mmolm-2 d-1, with only 1 to 2.5% of the upward methane flux being released into the water column. Additionally, two parallel sediment cores from Quepos Slide were used for in vitro experiments in a recently developed sediment-flow-through (SLOT) system to simulate an increased fluid and methane flux from the bottom of the sediment core. The benthic methane filter revealed a high adaptability whereby the methane oxidation efficiency responded to the increased fluid flow within ca. 170 d. To our knowledge, this study provides the first estimation of the natural biogeochemical response of seep sediments to changes in fluid flow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background To assess the efficacy and safety of topotecan and cyclophosphamide (TC) in adult patients with pediatric-type sarcoma subtypes who failed induction chemotherapy. Patients and methods Patients with pediatric sarcoma subtypes, refractory to or relapsed after at least one prior induction chemotherapy, inoperable, ECOG PS 0-2, with measurable, progressive disease (PD), adequate organ functions, who have been treated with TC combination were retrospectively analysed within the AIO and SAREZ/BMBF network. Results Thirty-nine patients, median age 28 years (18-58), 14 females, 25 males, have been identified. All patients had received induction treatment according to (inter)national study protocols. Second-line TC was applied in 33 patients (≥3rd-line in 6 patients). Twenty-three patients had refractory disease (evidence of PD during induction chemotherapy); 8 patients experienced an early relapse within 6 months as well as 8 patients after more than 24 months (late relapse). A median of 3 cycles (range, 1-6) had been applied and antitumor activity was: CR 2.6 %, PR 7.9 %, and disease stabilisation (SD) 26.3 %. PR lasted 32.8 months and median duration in patients with SD was 5 months (range, 2.0-14.7). The 3/6-months progression-free rates were 43.2 and 18.9 %. Conclusions Limited activity was seen in adult pts with refractory or relapsed pediatric-type sarcomas with the regimen which has proven activity in pediatric patients. Adults with refractory small cell sarcoma appear to have a similar dismal outcome as seen in pts with common adult-type histologies; however, a subset of patients has achieved long-lasting remissions on TC resulting in long-term survival. Social network analysis (SNA) has become a widespread tool for the study of animal social organisation. However despite this broad applicability, SNA is currently limited by both an overly strong focus on pattern analysis as well as a lack of dynamic interaction models. Here, we use a dynamic modelling approach that can capture the responses of social networks to changing environments. Using the guppy, Poecilia reticulata, we identified the general properties of the social dynamics underlying fish social networks and found that they are highly robust to differences in population density and habitat changes. Movement simulations showed that this robustness could buffer changes in transmission processes over a surprisingly large density range. These simulation results suggest that the ability of social systems to self-stabilise could have important implications for the spread of infectious diseases and information. In contrast to habitat manipulations, social manipulations (e.g. change of sex ratios) produced strong, but short-lived, changes in network dynamics. Lastly, we discuss how the evolution of the observed social dynamics might be linked to predator attack strategies. We argue that guppy social networks are an emergent property of social dynamics resulting from predator-prey co-evolution. We report the sol–gel synthesis of a CuWO4 (Eg∼ 2.0–2.15 eV) thin film loaded with Ag nanowires. The incorporation of Ag nanowires into the semiconductor matrix significantly improves the performance of CuWO4 as a photoanode for use in photochemical water splitting (PEC). Here, we have developed a planar electrode to test the photoactivity of the catalyst using standard electrochemical procedures under simulated solar light. The sol–gel synthesis of CuWO4 is modified such that we add Ag nanowires during sol aging. We demonstrate that there is negligible change to the CuWO4 matrix microstructure, morphology or crystal structure. When we compare the pristine CuWO4 to the material with Ag nanowires embedded in the CuWO4 matrix there is a fourfold improvement of photocurrent at 1.23 V vs. NHE to ca. 1.5 mA cm−2 (pH 9) under simulated AM1.5G illumination. This photocurrent is very competitive against more well developed photoanode structures when consideration for surface area is allowed. The Ag nanowires increase carrier mobility film enabling a sufficiently thick sample of catalyst, measured at 750 nm, to effectively harvest incident light. The addition of the Ag nanowires removes the plateau region found for CuWO4 further indicating that there is a good flow of carriers to the surface of the catalyst, a significant improvement as carrier mobility has been shown to be low in CuWO4. The Faradaic efficiency of the catalyst was measured at 31%. Our flat band potential is found to be 0 vs. NHE. The ability to make a highly photoactive catalyst using a simple chemical process opens up opportunities in a wide range of areas that focus on PEC and other light harvesting processes. Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI) have changed the natural course of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). With the advent of second-generation TKI safety and efficacy issues have gained interest. The randomized CML - Study IV was used for a long-term evaluation of imatinib (IM). 1503 patients have received IM, 1379 IM monotherapy. After a median observation of 7.1 years, 965 patients (64%) still received IM. At 10 years, progression-free survival was 82%, overall survival 84%, 59% achieved MR5, 72% MR4.5, 81% MR4, 89% major molecular remission and 92% MR2 (molecular equivalent to complete cytogenetic remission). All response levels were reached faster with IM800 mg except MR5. Eight-year probabilities of adverse drug reactions (ADR) were 76%, of grades 3-4 22%, of non-hematologic 73%, and of hematologic 28%. More ADR were observed with IM800 mg and IM400 mg plus interferon α (IFN). Most patients had their first ADR early with decreasing frequency later on. No new late toxicity was observed. ADR to IM are frequent, but mostly mild and manageable, also with IM 800 mg and IM 400 mg+IFN. The deep molecular response rates indicate that most patients are candidates for IM discontinuation.
