Context is essential in virtually all human activities. Yet some logical notions seem to be context-free. For example, the nature of the universal quantifier, the very meaning of "all", seems to be independent of the context. At the same time, there are many quantifier expressions, and some are context-independent, while others are not. Similarly, purely logical consequence seems to be context-independent. Yet often we encounter strong inferences, good enough for practical purposes, but not valid. The two types of examples suggest a general problem: how to characterise the context-free logical concepts in their natural environment, that is, in the field of their context-dependent associates. A general Thesis on Quantifiers is formulated: among all quantifiers, the context-free ones are just those definable by the universal quantifier. The issue of inferences is treated following the approach introduced by Richard L. Epstein: valid ones are an extreme case, the result of the disappearance of context-dependence. This idea can be applied to an analysis of a form of abduction, called "reductive inference" in Polish literature on logic. After the 1968 emigration, very few Jews remained in Poland, and even more miniscule was the number of "Jewish Jews." Since then the number has grown somewhat, and much of it is due to the process of de-assimilation; i.e., some people with Jewish ancestors raised in completely Polonized families began to recover, reclaim, and readapt their Jewish background. An analysis of this phenomenon is offered with a series of putative reasons for its occurrence. The individuals constituting the "products" of de-assimilation are the majority of Polish Jews today and form much of the current leadership. While individuals everywhere can strengthen their ties to the Jewish people and can experience teshuvah or another kind of "Judaization," the process of de-assimilation does not seem to be reducible to those moves. It begins with no Jewish identity, and is highly dependent on the attitudes and cultural trends in the majority society. It does not remove the de-assimilationists from the majority culture. The phenomenon is general and deserves to be studied as a sociological mechanism working in other cases of assimilation to a majority culture. In the Jewish case, it is especially dramatic. Probably the first example can be found in the evolution of the Marrano communities settled in Holland. The presence of de-assimilation seems to differentiate some European, first of all East European, communities from the globally dominant American and Israeli ones. The article discusses the author's perception of Canada and its Jewish community before and after reading a book about Canadian Jewry. The author initially viewed Canada as an addendum to the United States, with a small Jewish community. However, the book changed their perception by highlighting the size and diversity of the Canadian Jewish community, as well as the significant role of Yiddish. The author also compares the experiences of Polish Jews, who underwent a process of de-assimilation, with the more organically Jewish community in Canada. The article concludes by discussing the presence of large numbers of Ukrainians in Poland and the potential for a special connection between Poland and Canada. [Extracted from the article]

Background: The current literature on meningioma reveals a gap in knowledge regarding the impact of genetic factors on patient survival. Furthermore, there is a lack of data on the relationship between the perioperative use of corticosteroids and patient survival in meningioma patients. Our study aims to overcome these gaps by investigating the correlation between genetic factors and overall survival and the effect of postoperative corticosteroids and other clinical characteristics on patient outcomes in meningioma patients. Methods: A retrospective analysis of the medical records of 85 newly diagnosed meningioma patients treated from 2016 to 2017 with follow-up until December 2022 was performed. Results: NF2 mutations occurred in 60% of tumors, AKT1 mutations in 8.2%, and TRAF7 mutations in 3.6%. Most tumors in the parasagittal region had the NF2 mutation. On the other hand, almost all tumors in the sphenoid ridge area did not have the NF2 mutation. AKT-1-mutated meningiomas had more frequent peritumoral edema. Patients who received steroids perioperatively had worse overall survival (OS) than those without steroids (p = 0.034). Moreover, preoperative peri-meningioma edema also was associated with worse OS (p < 0.003). Contrarily, NF2 mutations did not influence survival. Conclusions: The combination of clinical, pathomorphological, and genetic data allows us to characterize the tumor better and assess its prognosis. Corticosteroids perioperatively and peri-meningioma edema were associated with shorter OS, according to our study. The aim of this study was to compare the pre- and postoperative function of patients qualifying for resection of malignant and nonmalignant primary brain tumors to determine the relationship among tumor type, function, and the course of rehabilitation after surgery. This single-center, prospective, observational study recruited 92 patients requiring prolonged postoperative rehabilitation during their inpatient stay, who were divided into a nonmalignant tumor group (n = 66) and a malignant tumor group (n = 26). Functional status and gait efficiency were assessed using a battery of instruments. Motor skills, postoperative complications, and length of hospital stay (LoS) were recorded and compared between groups. The frequency and severity of postoperative complications, the time needed to attain individual motor skills, and the proportion of patients losing independent gait (~30%) were similar between groups. However, paralysis and paresis were more frequent in the malignant tumor group before surgery (p < 0.001). While nonmalignant tumor patients deteriorated more according to all scales after surgery, patients with malignant tumors were still characterized by worse ADL, independence, and performance at discharge. Worse functional outcomes in the malignant tumor group did not affect LoS or rehabilitation. Patients with malignant and nonmalignant tumors have similar rehabilitation needs, and patient expectation—especially those with nonmalignant tumors—should be appropriately managed. Glioblastoma is the most malignant central nervous system tumor, which represents 50% of all glial tumors. The understanding of glioma genesis, prognostic evaluation, and treatment planning has been significantly enhanced by the discovery of molecular genetic biomarkers. This study aimed to evaluate survival in patients with primary glioblastoma concerning O6-methylguanine–DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter methylation and other clinical factors. The study included 41 newly diagnosed glioblastoma patients treated from 2011 to 2014 in the 10th Military Research Hospital and Polyclinic, Poland. All patients underwent surgical resection followed by radiation and chemotherapy with alkylating agents. The MGMT promoter methylation was evaluated in all patients, and 43% were found to be methylated. In 26 and 15 cases, gross total resection and subtotal resection were conducted, respectively. Patients with a methylated MGMT promoter had a median survival of 504 days, while those without methylation had a median survival of 329 days. The group that was examined had a median age of 53. In a patient group younger than 53 years, those with methylation had significantly longer overall survival (639 days), compared to 433.5 days for patients without methylation. The most prolonged survival (551 days) was in patients with MGMT promoter methylation after gross total resection. The value of MGMT promoter methylation as a predictive biomarker is widely acknowledged. However, its prognostic significance remains unclear. The Euclidean ideal of mathematics as well as all the foundational schools in the philosophy of mathematics have been contested by the new approach, called the "maverick" trend in the philosophy of mathematics. Several points made by its main representatives are mentioned - from the revisability of actual proofs to the stress on real mathematical practice as opposed to its idealized reconstruction. Main features of real proofs are then mentioned; for example, whether they are convincing, understandable, and/or explanatory. Therefore, the new approach questions Hilbert's Thesis, according to which a correct mathematical proof is in principle reducible to a formal proof, based on explicit axioms and logic. An archive of sorts can exist within one’s body, cf. memory or DNA. Hidden archive containing the knowledge of one’s ancestors can sometimes induce a change of identity. Some Poles with Jewish roots have gone the way of de-assimilation, or the reversal of assimilation. Almost never does it lead to de-Polonizasummariestion. The alleged proof of the non-mechanical, or non-computational, character of the human mind based on Gödel's incompleteness theorem is revisited. Its history is reviewed. The proof, also known as the Lucas argument and the Penrose argument, is refuted. It is claimed, following Gödel himself and other leading logicians, that antimechanism is not implied by Gödel's theorems alone. The present paper sets out this refutation in its strongest form, demonstrating general theorems implying the inconsistency of Lucas's arithmetic and the semantic inadequacy of Penrose's arithmetic. On the other hand, the limitations to our capacity for mechanizing or programming the mind are also indicated, together with two other corollaries of Gödel's theorems: that we cannot prove that we are consistent (Gödel's Unknowability Thesis), and that we cannot fully describe our notion of a natural number. By limiting available measures we render ourselves weaker, but if we attain our goal then we demonstrate strength - the sort that would otherwise remain concealed. This is the case in classical mountain climbing and mathematics. First examples are to be found in the Bible: the Torah tells the story of Jacob and Esau: the strength of the latter gives way to the weakness of the former. Nonetheless, subsequently Jacob's strength is demonstrated; obviously, his mission calls for self-restriction. True, an unconstrained battle waged in accordance with the ideal of non-violence is extremely difficult. Even Gandhi, its most renowned propagator, was well of aware of this fact. The limitation of this ideal in relation to the situation of the Jews was indicated by Martin Buber, otherwise a radical adherent of non-violence solutions worth applying whenever it is possible. Describe something comprehensively with words? As a rule, it suffices to describe to a degree necessary for understanding. God is totally elusive. Infinity is partly so, and the same is even true of natural numbers, premonitions, hopes, and atmosphere. Even if something can be expressed it is still impossible to grasp numerous aspects. This is even the case when we limit ourselves to issues well known to everyone around us and, presumably, experienced by all in the same way or at the very least extremely similarly. My example pertains to one of the most banal forms of our behaviour: saying "good day" to others on a mountain trail. If I am correct, then there unavoidably appears a sui generis "apophatic anthropology": we experience man and human issues without differing among each other - if not in reference to all people then at least to an accepted group - but are incapable of describing this. Stereotactic biopsy of posterior fossa lesions is often regarded as hazardous due to the critical structures in that area. Therefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and safety of infratentorial stereotactic biopsy of brainstem or cerebellar lesions and its associations with other clinical, laboratory, and radiological parameters. From January 2000 to May 2021, 190 infratentorial stereotactic biopsies of posterior fossa tumors, including 108 biopsies of brainstem lesions, were performed. Moreover, 63 supratentorial biopsies of cerebral peduncle lesions were analyzed to compare the safety and efficacy of both approaches. Additionally, the presence of antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii and Epstein–Barr Virus (EBV) were documented in 67 and 66 patients, respectively, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans were evaluated in 114 patients. Only 4% of patients had minor complications and 1.5% had major complications, including one patient who died from intracranial bleeding. Nine (4.7%) biopsies were non-diagnostic. Isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) mutation, 1p/19q codeletion, and O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) promoter methylation status were assessed in 29 patients, and were non-diagnostic in only 3 (10.3%) cases. Patients with high-grade gliomas (HGG) were more frequently seropositive for T. gondii than individuals with low-grade gliomas (LGG; p < 0.001). A total of 27% of HGG and 41% of LGG were non-enhancing on MRI. The infratentorial approach is generally safe and reliable for biopsy of brainstem and cerebellar lesions. In our study, the safety and efficacy of supratentorial biopsy of the cerebral peduncle and infratentorial biopsy of lesions below the cerebral peduncle were comparably high. Moreover, patients with HGG were more frequently seropositive for T. gondii than patients with LGG, and the relationship between toxoplasmosis and gliomagenesis requires further investigation. The article features philosopher Andrzej Grzegorczyk. Born in Warsaw, Poland on August 22, 1922, Grzegorczyk simultaneously studied physics and philosophy at the clandestine Polish university located in Warsaw. He considered logic to be a part of the mathematical foundations of mathematics and he shared the view that logical studies should respect the deductive practice of science.

The so called Lucas argument, and more recently that put forward by Penrose, attempt to use Gödel's incompleteness theorems to demonstrate the non-mechanical nature of the mind, or in other words, that mind is not computational. Generalizing and strengthening the criticism of those arguments that have been made by mathematical logicians, it is proved that all possible variants of the argument must lead to a vicious circle or to inconsistency or to unsoundness (acceptance of a false statement). This defeats Lucas, who assumes his consistency and Penrose, who assumes his soundness. As Gödel has remarked, the existence of a robot, whom we will call Luke, equivalent to the humanmind as far as mathematical capacities go, is not excluded by his incompleteness theorem.
