An educator's competence influences the implementation of evidence-based education and the overall quality of social and health care. This study aimed to identify distinct competence profiles from Finnish social, health and rehabilitative care educators, as well as describe which personal and professional characteristics influenced belonging to a certain profile. Data were collected from 28 educational organizations located throughout Finland using the Health and Social Care Educators' Competence instrument. The survey was answered by 422 educators. The performed K-means cluster analysis identified three distinct educator competence profiles, which differed in terms of self-assessed expertise in various competence areas and certain background characteristics. The results highlight that educational institutions should concentrate on refining the digital competence of educators, which requires networking, collaboration, and work-related pedagogical competence. The differences in evaluation identified for the three profiles demonstrates that more experienced educators should mentor their less experienced counterparts to ensure a high quality of education. Equine laryngeal dysplasia ( ELD) is a congenital disorder caused by hypoplasia or aplasia of the structures derived from the fourth and possibly sixth branchial arches. The severity of the clinical signs varies widely, and depends on which structures are involved and the extent of the defect. In most cases, affected horses present with abnormal respiratory noise during exercise and poor performance. Manifestation of the disease in foals is very rare. This case report describes an unusual presentation of ELD in a neonatal foal. The foal presented with severe respiratory distress and weakness. Equine laryngeal dysplasia was suspected on endoscopy and later confirmed on post mortem examination of the larynx. Limited data are available about the role of the serotonin 2B (5-HT2B) receptor in the function of human islets. This study aimed to test whether the 5-HT2B receptor contributes to glucose, insulin, and glucagon homeostasis in humans, utilizing a hereditary loss-of-function gene mutation in the receptor, which causes a 50% reduction in the production of the receptor protein in heterozygotes. This clinical study enrolled participants recruited by newspaper advertisements and from mental status examinations. A cohort of participants from a young Finnish founder population composed of 68 non-diabetic males with a mean age of 30 was divided into groups for comparison based on being a 5-HT2B receptor loss-of-function gene mutation (HTR2B Q20*) heterozygote carrier (n = 11) or not (n = 57). Serum levels of glucose, insulin, and glucagon were measured in a 5 h oral glucose tolerance test using a 75 g glucose challenge. Insulin resistance, insulin sensitivity, and beta cell activity were calculated using the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA2) and whole body insulin sensitivity index (WBISI), as well as the ratio of glucagon to insulin was noted. The areas under the curves (AUCs) were also determined. Concentrations of the serotonin metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) were measured in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Covariate adjusted mean score comparisons were applied. Lower glucagon secretion and decreased glucose excursion were observed among HTR2B Q20* carriers as compared with individuals who were homozygotes for the wild-type Q20 allele (controls). No differences in insulin secretion, beta cell activity, insulin resistance, or insulin sensitivity were observed. The glucagon to insulin ratio differed between the HTR2B Q20* carriers and controls. CSF levels of 5-HIAA were similar between groups. Our findings indicate that the 5-HT2B receptor may contribute to the regulation of human glucagon and glucose homeostasis and the interplay between glucagon and insulin secretion. Forestry-drained peatlands in the boreal region are currently undergoing restoration in order to bring these ecosystems closer to their natural (undrained) state. Drainage affects the methane (CH4) dynamics of a peatland, often changing sites from CH4 sources to sinks. Successful restoration of a peatland would include restoration of not only the surface vegetation and hydrology, but also the microbial populations and thus CH4 dynamics. As a pilot study, CH4 emissions were measured on two pristine, two drained and three restored boreal spruce swamps in southern Finland for one growing season. Restoration was successful in the sense that the water table level in the restored sites was significantly higher than in the drained sites, but it was also slightly higher than in the pristine sites. The restored sites were surprisingly large sources of CH4 (mean emissions of 52.84 mg CH4 m-2 d-1), contrasting with both the pristine (1.51 mg CH4 m-2 d-1) and the drained sites (2.09 mg CH4 m-2 d-1). We built an automatic chamber system to measure greehouse gas (GHG) exchange in forested peatland ecosystems. We aimed to build a system robust enough which would work throughout the year and could measure through a changing snowpackin addition to producing annual GHG fluxes by integrating the measurements without the need of using models. The system worked rather well throughout the year, but it was not service free. Gap filling of data was still necessary. We observed problems in carbon dioxide (CO2) flux estimation during calm summer nights, when a CO2 concentration gradient from soil/moss system to atmosphere builds up. Chambers greatly overestimated the nighttime respiration. This was due to the disturbance caused by the chamber to the soil-moss CO2 gradient and consequent initial pulse of CO2 to the chamber headspace. We tested different flux calculation and measurement methods to solve this problem. The estimated flux was strongly dependent on (1) the type of the fit (linear and polynomial), (2) the starting point of the fit after closing the chamber, (3) the length of the fit, (4) the speed of the fan mixing the air inside the chamber, and (5) atmospheric turbulence (friction velocity, u*). The best fitting method (the most robust, least random variation) was linear fitting with the period of 120-240 s after chamber closure. Furthermore, the fan should be adjusted to spin at minimum speed to avoid the pulse-effect, but it should be kept on to ensure mixing. If nighttime problems cannot be solved, emissions can be estimated using daytime data from opaque chambers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

a consequence of the close integration of cattle into the food chain of humans, forensically relevant cases involving cattle ( Bos taurus) DNA analysis are common. However, scientific publications reporting the information content of the commonly used bovine short tandem repeat (STR) loci remains scarce. Population studies were performed for 16 polymorphic STR loci (BM1818, BM1824, BM2113, CSRM60, CSSM66, ETH3, ETH10, ETH225, HAUT27, ILSTS006, INRA023, SPS115, TGLA53, TGLA122, TGLA126, and TGLA227) including 4,162 randomly selected cattle representing 20 distinct breeds. The power of parental exclusion, expected and observed heterozygosity, probability of identity, and non-amplifying ('null') allele frequencies were calculated. Major differences existed in the information content between different cattle breeds. The selection of 16 STR loci, partially recommended by International Society for Animal Genetics as the minimum standard needed for bovine STR typing, was sufficient for forensic analysis. Furthermore, the efficacy of the loci was assessed in assigning unknown individuals to the correct breed based on genotype data. Despite promising preclinical results, the clinical benefits of cancer gene therapy have been modest heretofore. The main obstacle continues to be the level and persistence of gene delivery to sufficiently large areas of the tumor. One approach for overcoming this might entail extended local virus release. We studied the utility of silica gel monoliths for delivery of adenovirus to advanced orthotopic gastric and pancreatic cancer tumors. Initially, the biochemical properties of the silica-virus matrix were studied and nearly linear release as a function of time was detected. Virus stayed infective for weeks at +37 °C and months at +4 °C, which may facilitate storage and distribution. In vivo, extended release of functional replication deficient and also replication-competent, capsid-modified oncolytic viruses was seen. Treatment of mice with pancreatic cancer doubled their survival (P<0.001). For rotating Bose-Einstein condensates, the occurrence of vortices has been much discussed in the Gross-Pitaevskii approach. Here, we study vortex formation in finite systems with few particles for weak and repulsive two-body interactions, by numerical diagonalization. Vortex formation is surprisingly similar for both (spinless) bosonic and fermionic particles. Breaking the rotational invariance of the Hamiltonian of the system reveals the vortex patterns. Singular value decomposition (SVD) based electrocardiogram (ECG) morphology analysis is a novel method in the assessment of subtle abnormalities in the T wave morphology of 12-lead ECG. As various types of noise contaminate the ECG signal and create a bias for the morphological analyses, this study was designed to estimate the effects of noise on the SVD method in an experimental setup. Ideal signals were generated by filtering real ECG signals several times with the Savitzky-Golay filter. Random and real noise samples were superimposed on the ideal signals. The noisy signals were filtered with a power line interference filter combined with the Savitzky-Golay or the wavelet filter. Results show that noise increased both the dipolar and non-dipolar components significantly unless filtering was applied. R-TWR (relative T wave residuum) and A-TWR (absolute T wave residuum) were four to eight times higher in noisy signals. The experiments with patient data demonstrated that certain types of noise may even lead to erroneous classification of patients. Magnetic properties of two and three-dimensional clusters of quantum dots are studied with exact diagonalization of a generalized Hubbard model. We study the weak coupling limit, where the electrons interact only within a quantum dot and consider cases where the second or third harmonic oscillator shell is partially filled. The results show that in the case of half-filled shell the magnetism is determined by the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with spin 1/2, 1 or 3/2, depending on the number of electrons in the open shell. For other fillings the system in most cases favors a large total spin, indicating a ferromagnetic coupling between the dots. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OR-1896 is a pharmacologically active, long-lived metabolite of levosimendan. In the current study, the metabolism of 14C-labelled OR-1896 was investigated in six healthy men after intravenous infusion over 10 min and in male rats after an intravenous bolus dose. In human plasma, the only 14C-compounds detected were 14C-OR-1896 and its deacetylated form, 14C-OR-1855, in varying proportions in different subjects. In rat plasma >93% of radioactivity was associated with OR-1896. Radioactivity was mainly excreted to urine in both rats (about 69% of the dose) and humans (about 87% of the dose). OR-1896 was a major urinary compound in both humans and rats. Another major human metabolite was hypothesized as N-conjugated OR-1855. Other human and rat urinary biotransformation products were characterized as N-hydroxylated OR-1896 and N-hydroxylated OR-1855, as well as glucuronide or sulphate conjugates of N-hydroxyl OR-1896. The main difference between rat and human metabolism was a lower amount of OR-1855-related metabolites in the rats. In human faecal homogenates, only OR-1896 and OR-1855 were detected, whereas rat faecal metabolite profile was similar to that in urine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An important issue for designing any conservation programme aimed at preserving genetic diversity is estimation of the scale at which genetic structuring occurs. Additional relevant factors include distinguishing whether or not population structuring is expected to be stable as predicted by the member-vagrant hypothesis, or alternatively, whether populations are more prone to local extinction–recolonization processes, as predicted by the metapopulation evolutionary model. In this study, the population genetic structure of Atlantic salmon from 11 locations within or nearby the Varzuga River tributary system was assessed using 17 microsatellites. Mantel tests and spatial autocorrelation analyses revealed a significant isolation-by-distance signal within the tributary system as well as a negative association between the level of genetic diversity and waterway distance from the river mouth, indicating that dispersal is less likely to occur to populations deep in the tributary system. Individual-level spatial autocorrelation analyses indicated that the majority of migration occurred between populations situated within 20 km of each other. The relatively high level of genetic structuring and significant isolation-by-distance signal observed in the Varzuga tributaries are concordant with the predictions of the member-vagrant evolutionary model. However, one subpopulation in particular revealed signs of instability which may be due to its location in the tidal zone, or due to the fact that it is more affected by human impacts. The results suggest that preservation of a number of spawning sites spaced throughout the tributary system is recommendable for ensuring sustainable fishing tourism in the river. Compilation and analysis of information from the literature regarding cross-species microsatellite amplification and polymorphism success, and relating this to source-target species genetic distance as estimated by pairwise cytochrome b ( cytb) divergence, enabled an in-depth investigation of factors affecting avian cross-species microsatellite amplification. Source-target species cytb distances provided accurate estimates of cross-species microsatellite amplification/polymorphism success rates not only in birds, but also in taxa where microsatellites cross-amplify across contrasting levels of taxonomic classification (frogs and cetaceans). As cytb is one of the most commonly sequenced DNA regions, pairwise cytb genetic distances should therefore be useful for predicting cross-species microsatellite success across a range of taxonomic groups. While the most important factor affecting cross-species microsatellite amplification/polymorphism success was a negative association with source-target species genetic distance, associations with additional features affecting cross-species amplification/polymorphism success included: decreasing PCR annealing temperature significantly increasing the chance of successful cross-species amplification, and a significant positive association between source species polymorphism and the proportion of target species in which a locus revealed polymorphism. No association between cross-species amplification and repeat motif (di-, tri-, or tetranucelotide) or repeat structure (perfect, imperfect, or compound) was observed. A set of nine loci which cross-amplified across an unusually broad range of passerine bird species were also identified, and could serve as a good starting point for cross-species amplification testing in passerine species for which insufficient loci are available. Haapasalo (2003) Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology, doi: 10.1046/j.1365-2990.2003.0502.x A novel frozen brain tissue array technique: immunohistochemical detection of neuronal paraneoplastic autoantibodies We introduce a modification of the tissue microarray technique in which several frozen brain tissue specimens are collected to a single frozen brain array block. In the present application, we use it for the detection of neuronal paraneoplastic anti-Hu autoantibodies. Representative samples from 15 different brain regions were collected according to a standard neuropathological autopsy protocol. Cryostat sections from each block were cut and conventionally stained. From representative areas, cylinder tissue samples from each specimen were punched and then arrayed into a recipient array block. Using the cryostat sections of this brain array, autoantibodies from seven anti-Hu-positive patient sera (confirmed by immunoblotting) were screened by immunohistochemistry. Neuronal architecture was well preserved and immunohistochemical staining was comparable to that of conventional cryostat sections. Because of the variable staining pattern in different brain areas, two anti-Hu-positive sera could be detected immunohistochemically by the one brain array. With the present array technique, it is possible to characterize the variable staining patterns of neuronal paraneoplastic autoantibodies in different locations of the human brain. Summary This study evaluated the effects of 7.5% saline on plasma and other extracellular fluid volumes. After baseline measurements, eight healthy postmenopausal female volunteers received 4 ml.kg-1 of hypertonic saline over 30 min. After the fluid infusion, the volunteers were studied for 60 min. Plasma volume was measured using a dilution of 125-iodine-labelled human albumin. Extracellular water and cardiac output were measured by whole body impedence cardiography. The infused volume was 4 ml.kg-1 (average 260 ml). Plasma volume increased rapidly during the infusion (mean ± standard deviation, 442 ± 167 ml). At the end of the 1-h follow-up period, plasma volume had increased by on average 465 ml (SD 83). The increase of extracellular water at the end of infusion and at the end of study was 650 ml (SD 93) and 637 ml (SD 192), respectively. The highest serum sodium recorded in the volunteers was 158 mmol.l-1 . The effect of 7.5% saline on plasma volume was rapid and lasted for at least 1 h. Plasma volume remained elevated by more than the infused volume at the end of the study. Summary Modern individual clustering methods utilising hypervariable nuclear microsatellite DNA polymorphisms are being increasingly applied in the field of population genetics. This study explores the efficiency of the clustering methods in identifying the breeds of origin of 250 domestic dog (Canis familiaris ) individuals based on 10 microsatellite loci. An allele sharing distance (D AS ) matrix and the corresponding neighbour-joining tree of individuals revealed monophyletic assemblages that corresponded perfectly with the breeds of origin of the dogs. Individual assignment tests using a Bayesian statistical approach, an allele frequency based method, and a D CE genetic distance based method were all extremely powerful. Most strikingly, the Bayesian method provided 100% assignment success of individuals into their correct breeds of origin and 100% exclusion success of individuals from all alternate reference populations with a high level of statistical confidence (P < 0.0001). A Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo clustering approach revealed clear distinction of individuals into groups according to their breeds of origin, with a near-zero level of ‘genetic admixture’ among breeds. The results demonstrate that an F ST of 0.18, mean expected gene diversity of 0.6 across 10 loci, and approximately 50 individuals per reference population suffice to provide maximum individual assignment success in C. familiaris . Recently it was demonstrated that the rotational and vibrational spectra of quantum rings containing few electrons can be described quantitatively by an effective spin-Hamiltonian combined with rigid center-of-mass rotation and internal vibrations of localized electrons. We use this model Hamiltonian to study the quantum rings at finite temperatures and in presence of a nonzero magnetic field. Exact many-body methods as well as current-spin-density functional theory are used to study the magnetism and electron localization in two-dimensional quantum dots and quasi-one-dimensional quantum rings. Predictions of broken-symmetry solutions within the density functional model are confirmed by exact configuration interaction (CI) calculations: In a quantum ring the electrons localize to form an antiferromagnetic chain which can be described with a simple model Hamiltonian. Background: An increase in postoperative dysphagia has been reported after laparoscopic fundoplication. Our aim was to compare laparoscopic Nissen-Rossetti fundoplication to open fundoplication regarding oesophageal clearance and dysphagia in a prospective, randomized study. Methods: Twenty-eight consecutive patients with objectively observed gastro-oesophageal reflux disease referred to operative treatment were randomized to laparoscopic (13) or open (15) fundoplication. A standard formula was used in pre- and postoperative interview. Oesophageal clearance was measured by liquid bolus radionuclide transit before and 3 days, 1 month and 1 year after fundoplication. Endoscopy was done preoperatively and 1 year after the operation. Results: Heartburn, regurgitation and ooesophagitis were cured with equal effectiveness (p = 0.001). New-onset dysphagia was observed in nine (69%) of the patients in the laparoscopic group and in nine (60%) in the open group during the first postoperative month. Food impaction occurred in four (31%) cases after laparoscopic and in two (13%) after open surgery (ns). One year after the operation, one patient (8%) in both groups had more than mild symptoms. Oesophageal radionuclide transit remained normal after open fundoplication, but after the laparoscopic procedure oesophageal clearance was disturbed - only one patient did not have a pathologic result during the first postoperative month. One year after the operation, clearance was normal. Conclusions: After laparoscopic operation, a tendency to more severe new-onset dysphagia was observed, and oesophageal clearance was transiently disturbed. Efforts should be made to minimize postoperative swallowing and clearance disturbances after laparoscopic fundoplication in order to get the full value out of otherwise more rapid recovery. Abstract In stark contrast to other species within the Salmonidae family, phylogeographic information on European grayling, Thymallus thymallus, is virtually nonexistent. In this paper, we utilized mitochondrial DNA polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism (mtDNA PCR–RFLP) and sequence variation to infer the postglacial dispersal routes of T. thymallus into and within northern Europe, and to locate geographically, potential evolutionarily distinct populations. Mitochondrial analyses revealed a total of 27 T. thymallus haplotypes which clustered into three distinct lineages. Average pairwise interlineage divergence was four and nine times higher than average intralineage divergence for RFLP and sequence data, respectively. Two European grayling individuals from the easternmost sample in Russia exhibited haplotypes more genetically diverged from any T. thymallus haplotype than T. arcticus haplotype, and suggested that hybridization/introgression zone of these two sister species may extend much further west than previously thought. Geographic division of the lineages was generally very clear with northern Europe comprising of two genetically differentiated areas: (i) Finland, Estonia and north-western Russia; and (ii) central Germany, Poland and western Fennoscandia. Average interpopulation divergence in North European T. thymallus was 10 times higher than that observed in a recent mtDNA study of North American T. arcticus. We conclude that (i) North European T. thymallus populations have survived dramatic Pleistocene temperature oscillations and originate from ancient eastern and central European refugia; (ii) genetic divergence of population groups within northern Europe is substantial and geographically distinct; and (iii) the remainder of Europe harbours additional differentiated assemblages that likely descend from a Danubian refugium. These findings should provide useful information for developing appropriate conservation strategies for European grayling and exemplify a case with a clear need for multinational co-operation for managing and conserving biodiversity. Genetic variabilities within and between Finnish populations of Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Wirehaired Dachshunds, Pembroke Welsh Corgis and Bedlington Terriers were quantified with microsatellite allele numbers, observed heterozygosities, expected heterozygosities, FIS estimates, FST estimates and DS distances. In a sample of 50 individuals from each breed and ten polymorphic loci, the highest genetic diversity was exhibited in the Wirehaired Dachsunds and lowest in the Bedlington Terriers. Although statistically significant deviations from the Hardy–Weinberg (H–W) equilibrium were observed, they occurred at an unexpectedly low frequency. Most strikingly, the extremely small Bedlington Terrier population displayed genotypes in H–W proportions in all investigated loci. The H–W deviations always occurred with positive FIS estimates, which, on average, were not larger than values reported for free-living canids. Genetic differentiation between the breeds was very large. As a comparison, present estimates were, on average, over two times higher than previously observed between breeds of sheep, and over two times higher than the highest estimates reported between human populations. Moreover, the highest DS distances were only slightly lower than the lowest values inferred between humans and chimpanzees. Severe bottlenecks in the recent past of the examined breeds were not statistically supported. We study the magnetic coupling in artificial molecules composed of two and four laterally coupled quantum dots. The electronic ground-state configurations of such systems are determined by applying current spin density functional theory which allows to include effects of magnetic fields. While the ground-state of a two-dot molecule with strong enough inter-dot coupling tends to be antiferromagnetic with respect to the spins of the single dot components, we find that a square lattice of four dots has a ferromagnetic ground state. We apply the current spin-density functional formalism (CSDFT) of Vignale and Rasolt to two-dimensional quantum dots in magnetic fields. The concept of shell structure has been found useful in the description of semiconductor quantum dots, which today can be made so small that they contain less than 20 electrons. We review the experimental discovery of magic numbers and spin alignment following Hund’s rules in the addition spectra of vertical quantum dots, and show that these results compare well to model calculations within spin density functional theory. We further discuss the occurrence of spin density waves in quantum dots and quantum wires. For deformable two-dimensional quantum dots (for example, jellium clusters on surfaces), we study the interplay between Hund’s rules and Jahn–Teller deformations and investigate the effect of magnetic fields on the ground-state shapes. In the present work the effect of several bis(guanylhydrazones) on the growth of Helianthus tuberosus tuber explants was studied. Different aliphatic congeners of glyoxal bis(guanylhydrazone) were tested. Most of the compounds displayed an inhibitory effect on growth, and a correlation between the structure of the molecule and the inhibitory activity was observed. Experiments carried out with glyoxal bis(guanylhydrazone) and its congeners methyl-, ethylmethyl-, and methylpropylglyoxal bis(guanylhydrazones) show that as the total number of side chain carbon atoms in the molecule increases, the inhibitory potency also increases. A depletion of spermidine levels was also found in the explants treated with ethylmethylglyoxal bis(guanylhydrazone), which turned out to be one of the most potent growth inhibitors. The addition of spermidine caused a significant reversion of the antiproliferative action of glyoxal bis(guanylhydrazone). The effect of these compounds on spermidine uptake in protoplasts isolated from carrot phloem parenchyma was also investigated. Only a slight competition was found when antagonists were present at concentrations 20 times higher than the polyamine, thus suggesting that bis(guanylhydrazones) do not share, at least at low concentrations, the polyamine transport system in plant cells. Using the density functional Kohn-Sham method we show that the internal shapes of fermion clusters are nearly independent of the interparticle interactions. The odd-even staggering of the total energy of small nuclei and of sodium clusters are shown to be of the same origin. Tetrahedral deformations are predicted for 40, 70 and 112 atom sodium clusters. Of 46 patients who had Nissen fundoplication for proved gastro-oesophageal reflux, 25 were available for follow up after a median of 20 years, 15 had died of unrelated causes, and six could not be traced. All 25 patients in the follow up study were personally interviewed: 21 consented to an endoscopy, 14 to 24 hour recording of oesophageal pH and manometry, and 15 to radionuclide transit test. Repeat fundoplication for recurrent reflux was performed in two cases during the study. Heartburn and regurgitation were significantly lessened (p < 0.005), but the incidence of dysphagia was slightly increased. Endoscopy showed six of 21 fundic wraps to be defective. Erosive oesophagitis was seen in two patients, and Barrett's oesophagus (histologically confirmed) in one of them and six other patients. Total reflux time was abnormal in four of 14 patients. No patient with an intact fundic wrap seen on endoscopy, only two of seven with Barrett's oesophagus, and one of four with abnormal reflux had oesophagitis. Fundoplication in itself did not affect oesophageal motility or transit, provided that the wrap was intact. It is concluded that Nissen fundoplication gave a reasonably good longterm effect in chronic reflux disease, with the stage of the fundic wrap as the main determinant of outcome. The diagnostic value of I-phenylpentadecanoic acid (IPPA) metabolic cardiac imaging was studied in a group (n=29) of patients with angiographically confirmed CAD using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). A symptom-limited exercise test was first done with IPPA, and 2 days later with thallium. Medications were not withheld during testing. Fourteen healthy control subjects participated in parallel IPPA and 15 in thallium tests. Data acquisition and output were comparable in the two imaging modalities. By testing various relatively simple criteria for abnormality we found that the semiquantitative interpretation was more accurate than the visual readings. The best compromise of accuracy with the scored criteria consisted of a sensitivity of 86% and a specificity of 86%, obtained with IPPA polar tomograms (mild exercise defect) and a sensitivity of 86% and a specificity of 80% obtained with thallium (regionally decreased washout). With visual interpretation alone, a sensitivity of 83% and a specificity of 71% was detected with IPPA (mild exercise defect) and 72% and 73%, respectively, with thallium (partial reversibility). The sensitivity of the exercise ECG alone was 62%. The results of this study imply that IPPA imaging could be a rational, uncomplicated clinical method for non-invasive diagnosis of CAD. Molar teeth of four groups of Osborne-Mendel rats, kept on a cariogenic dict, were treated once per day for 48 days with either distilled water (solution C), a solution containing 0.05% chlorhexidine gluconate and 0.04% NaF, pH 5.8 (solution CXF), CXF plus 1000 ppm Sr (solution CXFS), or CXFS plus 1000 ppm Zn (solution CXFSZ). Caries of the hemi-sectioned lower molars was scored according to grades of severity, and the extent of the buccal plaque was estimated. Inflammatory cell infiltration, vascularity, and thickness of the oral mucosa were estimated from stained sections of the buccal oral mucosa to detect possible adverse effects of the treatments. Fissure caries lesions with involvement of the dentin were reduced by 57% (p < 0.01) with the CXF treatment and by 68%o (p < 0.001) with the CXFS treatment. The CXFSZ treatment reduced the fissure caries least (44%, p < 0.05), but it appreciably reduced the extent of plaque. The mucosal changes were greatest in the group receiving the CXFSZ treatment, but they were generally small and at a non-pathological level.
