In this work, we describe the synthesis of novel electrically and magnetically dual-driven Janus particles for a handwriting-enabled twisting ball display via the microfluidic technique. One hemisphere of the Janus particles contains a charge control agent, which allows the display color to be controlled by applying a voltage and superparamagnetic nanoparticles, allows handwriting by applying a magnetic field to the display. We fabricated a twisting ball display utilizing these Janus particles and tested the electric color control and handwriting using a magnet. As a result, the display was capable of permitting handwriting with a small magnet in addition to conventional color control using an applied voltage (80 V). Handwriting performance was improved by increasing the concentration of superparamagnetic nanoparticles and was determined to be possible even when 80V was applied across the electrodes for 4 wt.% superparamagnetic nanoparticles in one hemisphere. This improvement was impossible when the concentration was reduced to 2 wt.% superparamagnetic nanoparticles. The technology presented in our work can be applied to low-cost, lightweight, highly visible, and energy-saving electronic message boards and large whiteboards because the large-size display can be fabricated easily due to its simple structure. Tai (36.26℃ N, 117.11℃ E, 1534m above sea level), Shandong Province, located at the center of central East China, during the period 28 May to 30 June 2006, to study seasonal maxima of regional air pollution with respect to ozone (O3) and aerosols. The specific objectives, campaign design, and major findings are summarized. High concentrations of O3 and its precursors, and aerosols, were detected and studied in the context of annual variations. Most importantly, we identified that emissions from regionalscale open crop residue burning after the harvesting of winter wheat, together with photochemical aging, strongly increased the concentrations of O3, aerosols, and primary pollutants in this month of year. Studies of in situ photochemical activity, regional source attribution of O3, O3-aerosol interactions, validation of satellite observations of tropospheric NO2, behaviors of volatile organic compounds and organic/inorganic aerosol species, loss rates of black carbon (BC), and instrument inter-comparisons are also summarized. Studying the emission ratios of carbonaceous aerosols (element carbon, EC, and organic carbon, OC) from open biomass burning helps to reduce uncertainties in emission inventories and provides necessary constraints for model simulations. We measured apparent elemental carbon (ECa) and OC concentrations at the summit of Mount Tai (Mt. Tai) during intensive open crop residue burning (OCRB) episodes using a Sunset OCEC analyzer. Equivalent black carbon (BCe) concentrations were determined using a Multiple Angle Absorption Photometer (MAAP). In the fine particle mode, OC and EC showed strong correlations (r > 0.9) with carbon monoxide (CO). Footprint analysis using the FLEXPART WRF model indicated that OCRB in central east China (CEC) had a significant influence on ambient carbonaceous aerosol loadings at the summit of Mt. Tai. ÉECa/ÉCO ratios resulting from OCRB plumes were 14.3±1.0 ngm-3 ppbv-1 at Mt. Tai. This ratio was more than three times those resulting from urban pollution in CEC, demonstrating that significant concentrations of soot particles were released from OCRB. ÉOC/ÉCO ratio from fresh OCRB plumes was found to be 41.9±2.6 ngm-3 ppbv-1 in PM1. The transport time of smoke particles was estimated using the FLEXPART WRF tracer model by releasing inert particles from the ground layer inside geographical regions where large numbers of hotspots were detected by a MODIS satellite sensor. Fitting regressions using the e-folding exponential function indicated that the removal efficiency of OC (normalized to CO) was much larger than that of ECa mass, with mean lifetimes of 27 h (1.1 days) for OC and 105 h (4.3 days) for ECa, respectively. The lifetime of black carbon estimated for the OCRB events in east China was comparably lower than the values normally adopted in the transport models. Short lifetime of organic carbon highlighted the vulnerability of OC to cloud scavenging in the presence of water-soluble organic species from biomass combustion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The impact of open crop residual burning (OCRB) on O3, CO, black carbon (BC) and organic carbon (OC) concentrations over Central Eastern China (CEC; 30-40° N, 111-120° E), during the Mount Tai Experiment in 2006 (MTX2006) was evaluated using a regional chemical transport model, the Models-3 Community Multiscale Air Quality Modeling System (CMAQ). To investigate these pollutants during MTX2006 in June 2006, daily gridded OCRB emissions were developed based on a bottom-up methodology using land cover and hotspot information from satellites. This model system involving daily emissions captured monthly-averages of observed concentrations and day-today variations in the patterns of O3, CO, BC and OC at the summit of Mount Tai (36° N, 117° E, 1534m a.s.l., Shandong Province of the People's Republic of China) with high correlation coefficients between the model and observations ranging from 0.55 to 0.69. These results were significantly improved from those using annual biomass burning emissions. For monthly-averaged O3, the simulated concentration of 80.8 ppbv was close to the observed concentration (81.3 ppbv). The MTX2006 period was roughly divided into two parts: 1) polluted days with heavy OCRB in the first half of June; and 2) cleaner days with negligible field burning in the latter half of June. Additionally, the first half of June was characterized by two high-pollution episodes during 5-7 and 12-13 June, separated by a relatively cleaner intermediate period during 8-10 June. In the first high-pollution episode, the model captured the high O3, CO, BC and OC concentrations at the summit of Mount Tai, which were associated with OCRB over southern CEC and subsequent northward transport. For this episode, the impacts of OCRB emissions on pollutant concentrations were 26% (O3), 62% (CO), 79% (BC) and 80% (OC) at the summit of Mount Tai. The daily OCRB emissions were an essential factor in the evaluation of these pollutants during MTX2006. These emissions have a large impact not only on primary pollutants but also on secondary pollutants, such as O3, in the first half of June over northeastern Asia. The model reproduced reasonably well the variation of these pollutants in MTX2006, but underestimated daily averages of both CO and BC by a factor of 2, when using emission data from almost solely anthropogenic fuel sources in the latter half of the observation period when field burning can be neglected. Inorganic polyphosphate [Poly(P)] is especially prevalent in osteoblasts. We tested the hypothesis that Poly(P) stimulates osteoblastic differentiation and polyphosphate metabolism for bone formation. The osteoblast-like cell line, MC 3T3-E1, was cultured with Poly(P), and gene expression was evaluated by real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain-reaction. Phosphatase activity and extracellular matrix mineralization were also determined. The role of Poly(P) was assessed in a beagle dog alveolar bone regeneration model. Poly(P) increased osteocalcin, osterix, bone sialoprotein, and tissue non-specific alkaline phosphatase gene expression, with a high level of end-polyphosphatase activity, resulting in low-chain-length Poly(P), inorganic pyrophosphate, and inorganic phosphate production. MC3T3-E1 cells differentiated into mature osteoblasts and showed expression of ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase phosphodiesterase 1, while mouse progressive ankylosis gene expression remained unchanged. Promotion of alveolar bone regeneration was observed in Poly(P)-treated beagle dogs. These results were significantly improved from those using annual emissions. For monthly-averaged O3, the simulated concentration of 81.5 ppbv was close to the observed concentration (82.5 ppbv). The period of MTX2006 was roughly divided into two parts: 1) polluted days with heavy open crop residual burning in the first half of June; 2) cleaner days with negligible field burning in the latter half of June. Additionally, the first half of June was defined by two high pollution episodes during 5-7 and 12-13 June, and a relatively cleaner episode during 8-10 June between these two high pollution episodes. In the first polluted episode, this model captured high O3, CO, BC, and OC concentrations at the summit of Mount Tai which were affected by open crop residual burning in the south of CEC and northward transport. For this episode, the impacts from open crop residual burning were 12% for O3, 35% for CO, 56% for BC, and 80% for OC over CEC. The daily emissions from open crop residual burning were an essential factor to evaluate the pollutants during the MTX2006. These emissions have a large impact not only on primary pollutants but also on secondly pollutions, such as O3, in the first half of June over northeastern Asia. On the other hand, this model did not capture the second polluted episode and underestimated observed CO and BC. Improvements of both anthropogenic and open burning emissions and CO inflow from model boundary are necessary to improve both anthropogenic and open burning emissions and CO inflow to evaluate the pollutants using this model. Mass concentrations of black carbon (BC) were determined in June 2006 at the top of Mount Tai (36.26° N, 117.11° E, 1534ma.s.l.), located in the middle of Central East China, using four different instruments: a multi-angle absorption photometer (5012 MAAP, Thermo), a particle soot absorption photometer (PSAP, Radiance Research), an ECOC semi-continuous analyzer (Sunset Laboratory) and an Aethalometer (AE-21, Magee Scientific). High correlation coefficients (R²>0.88) were obtained between the measurements of the BC mass concentrations made using the different instruments. From the range of the slopes of the linear least-square fittings, we concluded that BC concentrations regionally-representative of the area were measured in a range with a maximum-to-minimum ratio of 1.5 (an exception was that the BC (PM2.5) concentrations derived from MAAP were ∼2 times higher than the optical measurements (PM2.5) derived from the ECOC analyzer). While this range is significant, it is still sufficiently narrow to better constrain the large and highly uncertain emission rate of BC from Central East China. In detail, two optical instruments (the MAAP and the PSAP equipped with a heated inlet 400°C) tended to give higher concentrations than the thermal EC concentrations observed by the ECOC analyzer. The ratios of optical BC to thermal EC showed a positive correlation with the OC/EC ratio reported by the ECOC analyzer, suggesting two explanations. One is that the optical instruments overestimated BC concentrations in spite of careful cancellation of the scattering effect in the MAAP instrument and the expected evaporation of volatile species by heating the inlet of the PSAP instrument. The other is that the determined split points between OC and EC were too late when a large amount of OC underwent charring during the analysis, resulting in an underestimation of EC by the ECOC analyzer. High ratios of optical BC to thermal EC were recorded when the NOx/NOy ratio was low, implying the coating of the particles became thicker in an aged air mass and thus resulted in the optical instruments overestimating BC concentrations because of the lensing effect. We measured the number concentrations of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and the size distributions of CCN/CN (CN: condensation nuclei) ratios at supersaturations (SSs) of 0.097, 0.27, 0.58, and 0.97% at Jeju Island, Korea during March-April 2005. We made simultaneous measurements of aerosol inorganic ions, water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), organic carbon (OC), and elemental carbon (EC) in PM2.5. The CCN/CN ratios increased with increasing particle diameter, and the diameter at CCN/CN=0.5 was defined as D50. D50 represents the activation dry diameter of atmospheric particles. The average D50 at SS=0.097% and 0.97% was 136±17 nm and 31±3 nm, respectively. The temporal variation of D50 at SS=0.097% was correlated with the mass fraction of water-soluble components (inorganic ions + WSOC), indicating that the temporal variation of CCN activity was mainly controlled by changes in the water-soluble components fraction. The critical dry diameter (Dcrit), which is the threshold dry diameter for CCN activation, was calculated from the observed aerosol chemical compositions by Köhler theory for comparison with D50. The D50 at SS=0.097% was correlated (r²=0.48) with calculated Dcrit, although Dcrit was larger than D50 by 20-29% on average. The systematic difference between D50 and Dcrit could be caused by the size dependence of the aerosol chemical compositions or surface tension lowering caused by the mixing of water-soluble organic compounds. The Aerodyne Aerosol Mass Spectrometer (AMS) provides size-resolved chemical composition of non-refractory (vaporized at 600°C under vacuum) submicron aerosols with a time resolution of the order of minutes. Ambient measurements were performed in Tokyo between February 2003 and February 2004. We present intercomparisons of the AMS with a Particle-Into-Liquid Sampler combined with an Ion Chromatography analyzer (PILS-IC) and a Sunset Laboratory semi-continuous thermal-optical carbon analyzer.
