The new generation of three roll mills is able to monitor occurring process loads while dispersion. This paper focuses on the interpretation of the gathered data to find criteria quantifying the dispersion state online. The aim is process time reduction. We used impedance spectroscopy to identify the dispersion state and correlated it with the occurring process loads. The dispersion process of a wide spectrum of carbon based nano particles, namely carbon black, single walled carbon nanotubes, multi walled carbon nanotubes, a few-layer graphene powder, electrochemically exfoliated graphite and a functionalized electrochemically exfoliated graphite was investigated. The filler content was varied along the material's electrical percolation threshold. The criteria found led to a reduction of processing time and revealed the prevalent mechanisms during dispersion. Night-time tillage and sowing (photocontrol of weeds, soil cultivation in darkness) can reduce the germination and subsequent density of light-sensitive weeds by excluding the short light flash during soil disturbance. In most experiments conducted from 1990 to 2004 worldwide, total weed density was reduced in night-time tilled plots as expected. However, in a few field experiments, total weed density was significantly increased in night-time compared with daytime tilled plots. We hypothesise that the desiccation process of the upper soil layer (roughly about 0-30 mm), from where most small seeded weeds emerge, may have been delayed in night-time compared with daytime tilled plots, with significant effects on early seed germination processes. Daytime tillage was usually performed around noon, to capture high light intensities during soil tillage. However, around noon soil desiccation can be much higher than during the night. A few hours of relatively higher water availability for seeds in the upper soil layer during the night, before the next morning when soil desiccation usually increases again, may have favoured seed germination and subsequent weed emergence compared with daytime tillage, finally resulting in higher weed density in night-time tilled plots. For three seasons, six field trials were conducted in winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum) at different sites in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The aim was to evaluate the performance of three varieties, which differ in their shading behaviour, in suppressing weeds under organic farming (Ökologischer Landbau) conditions and grown at three row spacings. The experimental factors were cultivar, row width and row orientation. Key parameters of crop and weed development, including ground cover and biomass, were assessed at different growth stages and analysed withanova. Growth of the site-specific weed vegetation was significantly affected in five of six trials. Weed growth was reduced by cvs Astron and Pegassos compared with cv. Greif, and was lower at 12 cm compared with 24 cm row spacing. No effect of row orientation (East-West, North-South) on weed growth was observed. The more competitive cultivars Astron and Pegassos were taller than the less competitive cv. Greif and had higher ground cover and light interception, presumably induced by planophile leaf inclination and partly, in the case of cv. Astron, because of higher leaf area index (LAI). Narrow row spacing (12 cm), resulting in a more even spatial plant distribution, increased crop ground cover, LAI, dry matter and light interception. In two trials, the variety with planophile leaf inclination performed better at wider row spacing, suggesting that planophile wheat cultivars may be advantageous in wider row stands. In organic agriculture, the internal farm nutrient cycle must bequantified to ensure high system productivity accompanied by environmentallysound production processes. In contrast to common farm-gate and field balances,budgeting at the stall level is seldom undertaken. When budgeting mixed farmingsystems, a substantial lack of nutrients can be detected in the “forageand straw input – stall – manure output” nutrient flow chain.Therefore, stall balances focus on a central component of whole-farm nutrientbudgets for developing efficient nutrient management strategies. At theexperimental farm for organic agriculture at Wiesengut in Hennef, Germany, allsolid mass flows for a suckler herd and a herd of beef bulls were measured.Relative balance values obtained for dry matter and C (45 to 56%), N (16to 36%), P (−7 to 22.5%), K (0 to 13%) and ash(−4 to 7%) varied over a wide range. Balances are very sensitive tovariations in mass flow and nutrient content for components with high nutrientcontents and/or a large contribution to total mass flow (e.g. manure, silage).In developing strategies to minimise N losses, by reducing N surplus in theration, one must consider, that, in contrast to dairy farms, a suckler herd forbeef production integrated in an organic farm has to adapt to crop productiondemands. A flexible videoscope with an outer diameter of 3.8 mm and equipped with a movable tip was used for in situ observation of roots growing in larger-sized biopores.
