Land use changes, specifically the growth of impervious areas due to urbanization, exacerbate non-point-source pollutants in stormwater runoff, surpassing discharge from point sources in Korea. The application of nature-based solutions, such as constructed wetlands (CWs), is becoming popular for stormwater treatment, but challenges arise when background concentrations are overlooked, leading to reduced pollutant removal efficiency. This study aims to propose a plan for the sustainability of CWs by evaluating design appropriateness and utilizing existing monitoring results. The evaluation of 63 CWs reveals that meteorological factors, specifically antecedent dry days and rainfall depth, have significant impacts on urban stormwater runoff quality in various land uses, affecting the performance of CWs. Designing CWs considering land use is crucial due to the considerable concentration variations across different land uses. Improving CW performance requires proper maintenance strategies to ensure effective pollutant removal mechanisms, especially for poorly degradable organic substances post treatment. Rainfall characteristics play a pivotal role in CW design and operation, affecting capacity, efficiency estimation, and maintenance frequency. Considering various factors such as land use, watershed characteristics, and ease of maintenance is essential when utilizing CWs. The escalating demand for innovative solutions is driven by the challenges posed by water quality degradation and the pervasive impacts of climate change. As such, this study evaluated the performance of filter media to mitigate these challenges through multi-functional applications in urban constructed wetlands (UCWs). Column testing of organic filter media, including biochar (BC), woodchip (WC), anthracite (AT), and activated carbon (AC), as well as inorganic filter media, such as ceramic balls (CB), basalt (BS), and porous sand (PS), with synthetic stormwater runoff influent was conducted to assess their performance through water quality parameters and Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) analysis for carbon storage potential. Among the media tested, AC exhibited high pollutant removal efficiencies amounting to 84%, 54%, 56%, and 44% for total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP), respectively. For inorganic media, PS had the highest TSS and TN removal, whereas BS exhibited the highest COD and TP removal. Overall performance rating revealed that AC and BS, despite their efficient pollutant removal, are associated with higher costs, resulting in a lower ranking compared to AT and PS. SEM-EDX analysis identified PS and AC as standout media for potential carbon storage, attributed to their extensive surface areas and pore structures providing abundant adsorption sites. The results from this study highlighted the potential applications of various filter media in UCW designs with the aim of achieving carbon neutrality and sustainable urban development. Stormwater treatment wetlands are widely recognized as efficient and cost-effective solutions to growing stormwater problems. This study presented a new approach to evaluating the current status and trends in stormwater treatment wetlands research. The annual scientific productivity of different states was identified using a bibliometric analysis approach. The number of publications related to stormwater treatment wetlands has exhibited an increasing trend since the earliest record of publication. USA and China were among the states that had the most number of stormwater treatment wetlands-related publications and international collaborations. In terms of the population-to-publication ratio, Australia, Canada, and South Korea were found to have a higher level of scientific productivity. Analysis of frequently used keywords and terms in scientific publications revealed that the efficiency of stormwater treatment wetlands and the processes involved in the removal of nutrients and trace elements were adequately investigated; however, inquiries on the removal of organic micropollutants and emerging pollutants, such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products, microplastics, and industrial compounds, among others, are still lacking. Through the comprehensive review of related scientific works, the design, components, and primary factors affecting the performance of stormwater treatment wetlands were also identified. Evaluating the functionality of small and decentralized low-impact development (LID) technologies often requires extensive labor, time, and costs for water quality analysis. In order to reduce these in an infiltration trench in South Korea, monitoring data gathered over a period of 8 years were used to determine its long-term performance, establish a stormwater quality estimation model, and develop a comprehensive evaluation tool. Our findings show that the infiltration trench can treat up to 90% of the stormwater runoff from a paved road but would require annual maintenance to minimize the reduction in infiltration capacity. The facility was able to remove an average of 83% of total suspended solids (TSS), 75% of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), 80% of chemical oxygen demand (COD), 76% of total nitrogen (TN), and 79% of total phosphorus (TP), with the highest removal efficiencies observed after maintenance was conducted. Rainfall depth and air quality parameters (i.e., PM2.5 and PM10) were found to be positively correlated with TSS, COD, TN, and TP. These parameters were then used to develop a model for the estimation of influent stormwater quality, which can help in estimating the effluent water quality based on the average removal efficiencies. Furthermore, a comprehensive evaluation tool considering indicators such as treatment efficiency, cultural benefits, and facility and operating conditions was established through the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Aside from determining the facility's overall efficiency, this can also serve as a diagnostic tool to identify whether maintenance is needed or not. While atmospheric and hydrological characteristics differ in different regions, and the results may vary if applied in other facilities, this study can serve as a guide to the effective and efficient evaluation of similar stormwater management facilities in South Korea. First flush is a phenomenon in stormwater runoff that has been considered a topic of great interest in the field of nonpoint source pollution. Despite several attempts to define the first flush quantitively, the specified characteristics of the phenomenon vary among sources. To address these uncertainties, a bibliometric and comprehensive review on published articles related to first flush was conducted. A corpus of 403 research articles was obtained from the Scopus database, which was then parsed using the CorText Manager for the bibliometric analysis. The study examined quantitative definitions of first flush from various sources; climate and topographic characteristics of monitoring and experimental sites where the studies on first flush were performed; the sample collection methods applied; the first flush values obtained on the studies and how it influenced the nonpoint source pollution in urban watersheds. A network map, two contingency matrices, and a Sankey diagram were created to visualize the relationship of significant keywords related to first flush, as well as their co-occurrences with journals, countries, and years. It was found that the strength of the first flush effect could vary depending on the geographical location of the site, climatic conditions, and the pollutants being analyzed. Therefore, initial rainfall monitoring, runoff sampling, and water quality testing were seen as critical steps in characterizing the first flush in urban catchments. Furthermore, the characterization of first flush was found to be significant to the selection of best management practices and design of low-impact development (LID) technologies for stormwater runoff management and nonpoint source pollution control. Agricultural areas utilize various types of agrichemicals to enhance crop growth and production. As a consequence, areas treated with excessive amounts of agrichemicals become primary sources of environmental pollutants. This study was conducted to analyze the different types of phosphorus (P) in the agricultural soils in Deacheong Lake Watershed. The effects of cultivation activities in the availability of nutrients that can potentially cause eutrophication of receiving water bodies were also assessed. The total phosphorus (T–P) and phosphate (PO4-P) concentrations in the tributaries draining into the Daecheong Lake were found to be three to seven times higher than the T–P and PO4–P concentrations in Daecheong Lake. The P concentrations in the waterways exhibited significant correlations (p < 0.05) with the soil P, implying that agricultural activities may influence the water quality in Daecheong Lake. Dry field soils had higher T–P concentrations (1246.1 ± 579.9 mg/kg) as compared to paddy fields and in situ soils due to the continuous accumulation of P in the soil strata. Non-apatite inorganic phosphorus (NAI-P) was the most dominant type of P in paddy field soils, whereas organic-P had the highest fraction in dry field soils. Paddy fields can have higher potentials of contributing to eutrophication, since NAI-P is an indicator of algal-available P. T–P concentrations in agricultural soils planted with different crops follows the order: tobacco > corn > perilla > soybean > Chinese cabbage > barley > sweet potato > garlic > potato > red pepper > rice. Urban areas such as roads, and parking lots, present different sets of problem, vehicular Nonpoint source (NPS) loadings derived from vehicular use are very high, while the roof have low NPS pollutant loadings. Therefore, this study was conducted to monitor the actual stormwater runoff characteristics of various landuse types and the treatment efficiency of the constructed GSI systems applied. The data used to calculate the pollutant concentrations were gathered from a total of 172 storm events during the five year monitoring period on a paved road, parking lot and roof landuse site. Based on the results, the road and parking lot landuses have characteristics of large amount of stormwater runoff, high peak flow and runoff of high pollutant concentration due to the vehicular activities. Applicable facilities include pretreatment facilities, such as infiltration trench, subsurface flow (SSF) and hybrid constructed wetland and tree box filter which have SA/CA ratios within 1∼2% were appropriate for facilities effective for reducing pollutants including infiltration and filtration functions. Meanwhile, the roof landuse contains low pollutants in comparison to other land uses, so, bioretention, rain garden, and free water surface (FWS) constructed wetland which have SA/CA ratio within 5% were appropriate to enable processing and recycling of large amount of stormwater runoff that have infiltration and retention function. Low-impact development (LID) and green infrastructure (GI) have recently become well-known methods to capture, collect, retain, and remove pollutants in stormwater runoff. The research was conducted to assess the efficiency of LID/GI systems applied in removing the particulate and dissolved heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cu, Ni, Cr, Cd, and Fe) from urban stormwater runoff. A total of 82 storm events were monitored over a four-year period (2010–2014) on six LID/GI systems including infiltration trenches, tree box filter, rain garden, and hybrid constructed wetlands employed for the management of road, parking lot, and roof runoff. It was observed that the heavy metal concentration increased proportionally with the total suspended solids concentration. Among the heavy metal constituents, Fe appeared to be highly particulate-bound and was the easiest to remove followed by Zn and Pb; while metals such as Cr, Ni, Cu, and Cd were mostly dissolved and more difficult to remove. The mass fraction ratios of metal constituents at the effluent were increased relative to the influent. All the systems performed well in the removal of particulate-bound metals and were more efficient for larger storms greater than 15 mm wherein more particulate-bound metals were generated compared to smaller storms less than 5 mm that produced more dissolved metals. The efficiency of the systems in removing the particulate-bound metals was restricted during high average/peak flows; that is, high-intensity storms events and when heavy metals have low concentration levels. A structured stormwater infiltration system was developed and constructed at a university campus and monitoring of storm events was performed during a oneyear operation period. The flow and pollutant mass balances were analyzed and the overall efficiency of the system was assessed. While significant positive correlations were observed among rainfall, runoff and discharge volume ( R= 0.93-0.99; p<0.05), there was no significant correlations existed between rainfall, runoff, discharge volume and pollutant load. The system was more effective in reducing the runoff volume by more than 50% for small storm events but the difference between the runoff and discharge volume was significant even with rainfall greater than 10 mm. Results showed that the pollutant reduction rates were higher compared to the runoff volume reduction. Average pollutant reduction rates were in the range of 72% to 90% with coefficient of variation between 0.10 and 0.46. Comparable with runoff reduction, the system was more effective in reducing the pollutant load for small storm events, in the range of 80% to 100% for rainfall between 0 and 10 mm; while 65% to 80% for rainfall between 10 and 20 mm. Among the pollutant parameters, particulate matters was highly reduced by the system achieving only a maximum of 25% discharge load even after the entire runoff was completely discharged. This research investigated the physical and chemical characteristics of sediment deposited at the bottom soil layer of free water surface fl ow constructed wetland (CW) treating runoff impacted stream water from an agricultural area which is important when determining the long-term maintenance requirements over the lifetime of the CW. Based on the findings, the infl uent to the CW still was polluted with high concentration of nutrients with TN and TP exceeding five and two times the water quality standard in rivers and lakes. The accumulation of sediment at the first treatment unit (sedimentation zone) of the CW augmented after the summer season signifying that the dredging of sediment must be conducted after the rainy season or until before the winter season. It was found out that the main phosphorus (P) types existing at the sediment in the CW were residual-P (R-P) and non-apatite-P (NAI-P) constituting to almost 90% of total P. While NAI-P can be released in the natural environment by increasing pH or reducing redox potential, and can be used by aquatic plants; R-P on the other hand exists with organic compounds and is diffi cult to separate. Twenty-three rainfall events were monitored to determine the characteristics of the stormwater runoff entering a rain garden facility and evaluate its performance in terms of pollutant removal and volume reduction. Data gathered during the five-year monitoring period were utilized to develop a deep learning-based model that can predict the concentrations of Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Nitrogen (TN), and Total Phosphorus (TP). Findings revealed that the rain garden was capable of effectively reducing solids, organics, nutrients, and heavy metals from stormwater runoff during the five-year period when hydrologic and climate conditions have changed. Volume reduction was also high but can decrease over time due to the accumulation of solids in the facility which reduced the infiltration capacity and increased ponding and overflows especially during heavy rainfalls. A preliminary development of a water quality prediction model based on long short-term memory (LSTM) architecture was also developed to be able to potentially reduce the labor and costs associated with on-site monitoring in the future. The LSTM model predicted pollutant concentrations that are close to the actual values with a mean square error of 0.36 during calibration and a less than 10% difference from the measured values during validation. The study showed the potential of using deep learning architecture for the prediction of stormwater quality parameters entering rain gardens. While this study is still in the preliminary stage, it can potentially be improved for use in performance monitoring, decision-making regarding maintenance, and design of similar technologies in the future. Most of the studies about stormwater low-impact development technologies (LID) used generalized observations without fully understanding the mechanisms affecting the whole performance of the systems from the catchment to the facility itself. At present, these LID technologies have been treated as black box due to fluctuating flow and environmental conditions affecting its operation and treatment performance. As such, the implications of microbial community to the overall performance of the tree-box filter (TBF) were investigated in this study. Based on the results, summer season was found to be the most suitable season for microorganism growth as greater microorganism count was found in TBF during this season compared to other seasons. Least microorganism count was found in spring which might have been affected by the plant growth during this season since plant penology influences the seasonal dynamics of soil microorganisms. Litterfall during fall season might have affected the microorganism count during winter as, during this season, the compositional variety of soil organic matter changes affecting growth of soil microbial communities. Microbial analyses of soil samples collected in TBF revealed that the most dominant microorganism phylum is Proteobacteria in all the seasons in both inlet and outlet comprising 37% to 47% of the total microorganism count. Proteobacteria is of great importance to carbon, sulfur, and nitrogen cycling in soil. Proteobacteria was followed by Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Chloroflexi which comprises 6% to 20%, 9% to 20%, and 2% to 27%, respectively, of the total microorganism count for each season. Each microorganism phylum was found to have varying correlation to different soil chemical parameters implying the effects of these parameters to microorganism survival in LID technologies. Depending on the target biogeochemical cycle, maintaining a good environment for a specific microbial phylum may be decided. The efficiency of nature-based facilities is mostly evaluated in terms of their pollutant removal capabilities; however, apart from water purification functions, constructed wetlands also perform ecological, cultural, and environmental education functions. A multi-criteria performance index was developed in this study to evaluate the overall efficiency of constructed wetlands. A total of 54 constructed wetlands installed across South Korea were monitored to evaluate the pollutant removal performance of the facilities. A comparison between the conventional pollutant removal-based evaluation and the developed multi-criteria index was also performed to determine the key changes in the results of evaluation when different methods are employed. Among the different types of wetlands studied, hybrid systems were found to be the most effective in terms of pollutant removal due to their complex configurations and functions. Newly constructed treatment wetlands have unstable performance and thus, a stabilization period ranging from two to five years is required to assess the facility's pollutant removal capabilities. As compared to the conventional pollutant removal-based efficiency evaluation, the comprehensive evaluation method provided a more strategic tool for identifying the facilities' strengths and weaknesses. This study assessed the factors affecting the growth and survival of microorganisms in a small horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (HSSF CW) treating stormwater runoff from highly impervious road and parking lot through long-term monitoring from 2010 until present. The HSSF CW facility consisted of sedimentation or pre-treatment zone, vegetation zone, and effluent zone, and employed filter media including bio-ceramics, sand, gravel, and wood chips. Results showed that flow reduction in the wetland through filtration and sedimentation played an important part in the overall performance of the HSSF CW. In addition, vegetation growth was found to be affected by pollutant and stormwater inflow in the HSSF CW. Vegetation near the outflow port exhibited greater growth rates by about 6.5% to 64.2% compared to the vegetation near the inflow port due to the less stormwater pollutant concentrations via filtration mechanism in the plant or media zone of the HSSF CW. The pollutant inflow from road and parking lot played an important role in providing good environment for microbial growth especially for the dominant microbial phyla including Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Acidobacteria in the HSSF CW. The procedures for analyzing pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are typically tedious and expensive and thus, it is necessary to synthesize all available information from previously conducted research. An extensive collection of PPCP data from the published literature was compiled to determine the occurrence, pathways, and the effectiveness of current treatment technologies for the removal of PPCPs in water and wastewater. Approximately 90% of the compiled published papers originated from Asia, Europe, and the North American regions. The incomplete removal of PPCPs in different water and wastewater treatment processes was widely reported, thus resulting in the occurrence of PPCP compounds in various environmental compartments. Caffeine, carbamazepine, diclofenac, ibuprofen, triclosan, and triclocarban were among the most commonly reported compounds detected in water and solid matrices. Trace concentrations of PPCPs were also detected on plants and animal tissues, indicating the bioaccumulative properties of some PPCP compounds. A significant lack of studies regarding the presence of PPCPs in animal and plant samples was identified in the review. Furthermore, there were still knowledge gaps on the ecotoxicity, sub-lethal effects, and effective treatment processes for PPCPs.
