Quantum networks that can perform user-defined protocols beyond quantum key distribution will require fully controllable entangled quantum states. To expand the available space of generated time-bin entangled states, we demonstrate a time-bin entangled photon source that produces qubit states | ψ 〉 = α | 00 〉 + β | 11 〉 with fully controllable phase and amplitudes. Eight different two-photon states have been selected and prepared from arbitrary states on the reduced two-qubit Bloch sphere. The photon pairs encoded in the time-bin scheme were generated at 2.4 MHz with a visibility of V = 0.9475 ± 0.0016 , with a violation of the CHSH Bell's inequality by 197 standard deviations. After entanglement distribution over 100 km of single-mode fibers, we obtained a visibility of V = 0.9541 ± 0.0113 with a violation of the CHSH Bell's inequality by 6 standard deviations. The prepared states had an average fidelity of 0.9540 ± 0.0016 at the source and an average fidelity of 0.9353 − 0.0209 + 0.0100 after entanglement distribution, which shows that the quantum states generated by our time-bin entangled photon source can be fully controlled potentially to a level applicable to long-distance advanced quantum network systems. This document examines the effects of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on health coverage disparities among Asian American populations. The study focuses on the role of educational attainment within different Asian ethnic groups and how the ACA provisions impacted coverage gaps. The findings suggest that the ACA reduced education-related coverage disparities for most Asian ethnic groups, except for the Japanese. The study emphasizes the need to consider intra-group disparities and educational attainment when addressing health coverage disparities within the Asian American population. Increasing the strut thickness to prevent or restrain out-of-plane deformation increases in-plane stiffness and strength, leading to excessive stress concentration at the junction of the damper and damper systems. We developed restraining panels to suppress out-of-plane deformation and enhance the deformation performance of steel slit dampers. Additionally, we investigated the impact of applying restraining panels on the plastic deformation capability and strength of the steel slit dampers. The experimental variables included (1) the presence of out-of-plane deformation restraining panels, (2) the ratio of effective height to strut width (aspect ratio), (3) the ratio of strut thickness to width (thickness-width ratio), and (4) loading amplitude. When the restraining panels were not applied, cracks occurred at the end of the strut. In the test specimen where out-of-plane deformation occurred, the cumulative plastic deformation angle improved from 1.97 to 3.29 times owing to the use of restraining panels. However, the strength increase ratio for all test specimens ranged from approximately 1.3–1.7, indicating that minimal strength enhancement was attributable to the restraining panels. This paper presents a design method of a suspension controller with an adaptive feedforward algorithm for ride comfort enhancement and motion sickness mitigation. Recently, it was shown that motion sickness is caused by combined heave and pitch motions of a sprung mass within the range of 0.8 and 8 Hz. For this reason, it is necessary to design a suspension controller for the purpose of reducing the heave and pitch vibration of a sprung mass within this range. To represent the heave acceleration and the pitch rate of a sprung mass, a 4-DOF half-car model is adopted as a vehicle model. For easy implementation in a real vehicle, a static output feedback control is adopted instead of a full-state one. To reduce the heave acceleration of a sprung mass for ride comfort enhancement, a linear quadratic SOF controller is designed. To reduce the pitch rate of a sprung mass for motion sickness mitigation, a filtered-X LMS algorithm is applied. To validate the method, simulation on vehicle simulation software is conducted. Photothermal therapy (PTT) has garnered considerable attention as an attractive treatment tool for cancer due to precisely selective treatment and minimal side effects. The primary challenge of PTT, which hinders its widespread application, is the limited therapeutic depth. This limitation arises from optical scattering in biological tissues, causing inadequate heat distribution within the deep tissue. To overcome this challenge, ultrasound‐assisted PTT (ULTRA‐PTT) is proposed that leverages the temporary formation of gas bubbles induced by ultrasound within the light propagation path. These bubbles act as optical clearing agents, effectively reducing optical scattering in biological tissues. To facilitate ULTRA‐PTT, a dedicated handpiece consisting of a ring‐shaped ultrasound transducer and a laser delivery module is developed. In‐vivo experiments show that ULTRA‐PTT statistically outperforms conventional PTT in melanoma treatment, mostly due to its ability to deliver sufficient laser energy to deep‐seated cancer cells. One's own voice undergoes unique processing that distinguishes it from others' voices, and thus listening to it may have a special neural basis for self-talk as an emotion regulation strategy. This study aimed to elucidate how neural effects of one's own voice differ from those of others' voices on the implementation of emotion regulation strategies. Twenty-one healthy adults were scanned using fMRI while listening to sentences synthesized in their own or others' voices for self-affirmation and cognitive defusion, which were based on mental commitments to strengthen one's positive aspects and imagining metaphoric actions to shake off negative aspects, respectively. The interaction effect between voice identity and strategy was observed in the superior temporal sulcus, middle temporal gyrus, and parahippocampal cortex, and activity in these regions showed that the uniqueness of one's own voice is reflected more strongly for cognitive defusion than for self-affirmation. This interaction was also seen in the precuneus, suggesting intertwining of self-referential processing and episodic memory retrieval in self-affirmation with one's own voice. These results imply that unique effects of one's own voice may be expressed differently due to the degree of engagement of neural sharpening-related regions and self-referential networks depending on the type of emotion regulation. Ultrasound-induced optical clearing microscopy (US-OCM) addresses limited imaging depth in optical microscopy, caused by light scattering in biological tissues. It uses ultrasound-induced gas bubbles to better image biological samples. However, controlling the bubble location using only ultrasound is challenging. This study introduces a novel method, "optrasound," combining optical and ultrasound energies for precise bubble control. It presents the ultrasound field and uses a focused laser to trigger bubble formation. Optrasound-induced deep microscopy improves light beam width by 3.39 times at a depth of 350 µm because the gas bubbles reduce light scattering. Enhancing safety communication within the construction industry is of paramount importance due to its potential in curtailing occupational injuries and improving the overall well-being of construction field workers. While the importance of improved communication is apparent, few studies have been focused on identifying the factors that positively influence communication, particularly in the context of safety. Especially in the case of foreign construction field workers (FCFWs), who often face communication challenges stemming from language and cultural differences, performing labor tasks in harsh and constantly changing environments is contributing significantly to the increasing rate of industrial accidents. Therefore, this study is aimed at investigating the vital factors that impact safety communication among FCFWs. A phenomenological qualitative method was applied to determine the vital factors influencing the safety communication among FCFWs. On applying the analytical hierarchy process, the factors and their importance were determined, and the vital factors were identified. Quantitative assessment through the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) established that extrinsic motivation (weight: 0.513), management communication style (0.264), and visible safety information (0.127) significantly overshadow other factors in safety communication effectiveness, validating their pivotal roles. However, a major limitation is that interview data were collected from workers of only four nationalities. Future studies should address this by expanding the range of nationalities included to enhance the diversity of experiences and perspectives from a broader variety of foreign construction field workers. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) child patients have difficulty in starting and completing daily tasks successfully on time due to executive function impairment. As a result, issues arise due to the patient having low self-efficacy and frequent troubles with parents. This study is a parallel pilot randomized controlled trial that suggests the usefulness of a voicebot to assist children with ADHD in performing daily tasks. A dialogue structure to help children's self-instruction training and a token-based economies method for task performance were applied to the voicebot. Sixteen children and their parents [Intervention group (n = 7), Control group (n = 9)] participated in an 8-week, home-based field study. We developed the voicebot using Raspberry Pi and allowed children with ADHD to use it four times a day through voice interaction. We found that children's use of the voicebot helped them to increase their self-efficacy, decrease the inattentiveness, increase self-control in completing daily tasks, and decrease the severity of behavioral problems. The study also revealed that it can help improve parent-child relationships. This paper presents a method to design a static output feedback active suspension controller for ride comfort improvement and motion sickness reduction in a real vehicle system. Full-state feedback controller has shown good performance for active suspension control. However, it requires a lot of states to be measured, which is very difficult in real vehicles. To avoid this problem, a static output feedback (SOF) controller is adopted in this paper. This controller requires only three sensor outputs, vertical velocity, roll and pitch rates, which are relatively easy to measure in real vehicles. Three types of SOF controller are proposed and optimized with linear quadratic optimal control and the simulation optimization method. Two of these controllers have only three gains to be tuned, which are much smaller than those of full-state feedback. To validate the performance of the proposed SOF controllers, a simulation is carried out on a vehicle simulation package. The Alpha stent is an intracranial closed-cell stent with a unique mesh design to enhance wall apposition. It recently underwent structural modifications to facilitate easier stent deployment. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of stent-assisted coil embolization for unruptured intracranial aneurysms using the Alpha stent. Between January 2021 and November 2021, 35 adult patients with 35 unruptured intracranial aneurysms in the distal internal carotid artery were prospectively enrolled. For efficacy outcomes, magnetic resonance angiography at the 6-month follow-up was evaluated using the Raymond-Roy occlusion classification (RROC). The safety outcome evaluated the occurrence of symptomatic procedure-related neurological complications up to 6 months postoperatively. Technical success was achieved in 34/35 (97.1%). Six months postoperatively, aneurysm occlusion showed RROC I in 32/35 (91.4%) and RROC II in 3/35 (8.6%) patients. Procedure-related neurologic complications occurred in one patient (2.9%) who experienced hemiparesis due to acute lacunar infarction, which resulted in a 6-month mRS score of 1. The Alpha stent demonstrated excellent efficacy and safety outcomes in stent-assisted coil embolization of unruptured distal ICA aneurysms. Background: The purpose was to compare the clinical and radiographic outcomes between preoperative mild and severe varus deformity after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with medial stabilizing technique (MST). Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 158 knees of 125 female patients with a 2-year follow-up who underwent mechanically aligned TKA with MST between April 2018 and February 2021. Patients were divided into two groups; the severe varus group was defined as one with preoperative hip-knee ankle (HKA) angle ≥ 15° and the mild varus group with HKA angle < 15°. Pre- and post-operative clinical outcomes (Western Ontario and McMaster University Osteoarthritis Index, Knee Society Knee Score) and radiographic outcomes (medial proximal tibial angle (MPTA), HKA angle, lateral distal femoral angle (LDFA), joint line distance, and femoral component rotation angle) were compared between the groups. Results: Among the 158 knees analyzed, 131 and 27 were allocated to the mild and severe varus groups, respectively. Preoperative data showed that the MPTA (84.7° ± 2.8° vs. 80.7° ± 3.2°, p < 0.001) was significantly less in the severe varus group. In postoperative data, clinical outcomes were not different between the groups. Joint line distance (18.4 mm ± 2.8 mm vs. 18.6 mm ± 2.7 mm, p = 0.676) was also not significantly different. Femoral component rotation angle (−1.7° ± 1.0° vs. −1.0° ± 1.3°, p = 0.018) was more externally rotated in the severe varus group. During the summers of 2022 and 2023, leaf spots suspected to be anthracnose were observed on the leaves of Rubus crataegifolius (Korean raspberry) grown in an orchard in Gimhae, South Korea. Approximately 20% of the Korean raspberry plants on the farm where the disease was discovered were confirmed to be infected. The morphological features of the fungal isolates were coincident to the descriptions of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides species complex. Phylogenetic analyses of concatenated sequences of the ITS, ACT, CAL, CHS-1, and GAPDH genes identified the causative agent as Colletotrichum aenigma. Pathogenicity tests confirmed that this fungal species is pathogenic to R. crataegifolius. Steel sheet piles are known for their straightforward assembly and construction, making them a popular choice that is often repurposed for other building projects once disassembled. Regarding the re-use of these steel sheet piles, understanding their behavior during penetration into the soil becomes pivotal. This study focuses on assessing the potential reusability of steel sheet piles as they penetrate into the soil. A laboratory-scale experiment involving the insertion of a steel sheet pile into a sand-filled tank was conducted. The experimental variables were the relative density of the soil, length of the steel sheet pile, and penetration method. The behavior of the sheet pile was analyzed, including the force-insertion length relationship and the strain of deformation occurring locally in the sheet pile. The results indicated that higher relative soil densities led to increased strain within the sheet pile. The strain values remained within the elastic range during the experiment. Notably, when interpenetrating the steel pile with a coupling mating joint test specimen, the strain showed an inverted mountain-shaped distribution within the interlock. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Leveraging natural language processing models using a large volume of text data in the construction safety domain offers a unique opportunity to improve understanding of safety accidents and the ability to learn from them. However, little effort has been made to date in regard to utilizing large language models for the prediction of accident types that can help to prevent and manage potential accidents. This research aims to develop a model for predicting the six types of accidents (caught-in-between, cuts, falls, struck-by, trips, and others) by employing transfer learning with a fine-tuned generative pre-trained transformer (GPT). Additionally, to enhance the interpretability of the fine-tuned GPT model, a method for saliency visualization of input text was developed to identify words that significantly impact prediction results. The models were evaluated using a comprehensive dataset comprising 15,000 actual accident records. The results indicate that the suggested model for detecting the six accident types achieves 82% accuracy. Furthermore, it was observed that the proposed saliency visualization method can identify accident precursors from unstructured free-text data of construction accident reports. These results highlight the advancement of the generalization performance of large language processing-based accident prediction models, thereby proactively preventing construction accidents. We give two characterizations of Pareto optimality via "near" weighted utilitarian welfare maximization. One characterization sequentially maximizes utilitarian welfare functions using a finite sequence of nonnegative and eventually positive welfare weights. The other maximizes a utilitarian welfare function with a certain class of positive hyperreal weights. The social welfare ordering represented by these "near" weighted utilitarian welfare criteria is characterized by the standard axioms for weighted utilitarianism under a suitable weakening of the continuity axiom. Ultraviolet light (UV) acts as a powerful disinfectant and can prevent contamination of personal hygiene from various contaminated environments. The 222-nm wavelength of UV-C has a highly effective sterilization activity and is safer than 275-nm UV-C. We investigated the irradiation efficacy of 222-nm UV-C against contaminating bacteria and viruses in liquid and fabric environments. We conducted colony-forming unit assays to determine the number of viable cells and a 50% tissue culture infectious dose assay to evaluate the virus titration. A minimum dose of 27 mJ/cm2 of 222-nm UV-C was required for >95% germicidal activity for gram-negative and -positive bacteria. A 25.1 mJ/cm2 dose could ensure >95% virucidal activity against low-pathogenic avian influenza virus and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). In addition, this energy dose of 222-nm UV-C effectively inactivated SARS-CoV-2 variants, Delta and Omicron. These results provide valuable information on the disinfection efficiency of 222-nm UV-C in bacterial and virus-contaminated environments and can also develop into a powerful tool for individual hygiene. Recently, studies have been carried out to apply lean duplex stainless steels, with less than 1.5% nickel, which provides higher material strength and lower cost compared with austenitic stainless steel for building structures. This study compared with existing experimental and finite element analysis results on the structural behaviours of cold-formed lean duplex stainless steel welded connections with different tensile strength (tensile strength-to-yield stress ratio) and plate thickness despite identical steel grade. The main variables are plate thickness and weld lengths. The material tensile strength of a 3.0 mm thick plate was 22% lower than that of a 1.5 mm thick plate. All specimens showed block shear facture in the base metal. Block shear strengths predicted by current design codes and the proposed equations from previous studies were compared with test strengths. KDS 41 31 00-19/AISC2016 and EC3 design specifications underestimated block shear capacity by on average 24%, 43%, respectively for 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm thick specimens, and equations suggested in previous studies of stainless steel welded connections did not sufficiently account for the influence of stress triaxiality by material property and plate thickness difference on the block shear strength of lean duplex stainless steel specimens. Therefore, thickness-dependent modified strength equations were recommended based on experimental and numerical studies of lean duplex stainless steel welded connections and comparison of carbon steel and other stainless steel connections. Sheet piles are used in various construction field applications, such as retaining walls, slope reinforcement, breakwaters, and ports, owing to their excellent strength, light weight, waterproofing, durability, and workability. The U-type section steel piling, which is a type of sheet pile, is composed of hollow trapezoidal sections with interlocks at both ends. At the construction site, a structure is formed by assembling the interlocks of each cross-section in a simple fitting type using the driving or indentation method. Interlock is an important part of connecting steel sheet piles. The shape, size, and steel type in the interlock affect the connection quality and structural performance of the structure. In this study, tensile tests were performed on test specimens connected in series in a simple fitting type for the interlock, which is an important component of the U-type section steel piling. It was observed that the load–displacement relationship temporarily decreased and then increased. In addition, formula for calculating the maximum strength of interlock was discussed and the predictions were compared with the experimental results, and the high consistency of the formula was verified. This paper addresses the challenges of wideband signal beamforming in radar systems and proposes a new calibration method. Due to operating conditions, the frequency-dependent characteristics of the system can be changed, and the amplitude, phase, and time delay error can be generated. The proposed method is based on the concept of the sliding window algorithm for linear frequency modulated (LFM) signals. To calibrate the frequency-dependent errors from the transceiver and the time delay error from the true time delay elements, the proposed method utilizes the characteristic of the LFM signal. The LFM signal changes its frequency linearly with time, and the frequency domain characteristics of the hardware are presented in time. Therefore, by applying a matched filter to a part of the LFM signal, the frequency-dependent characteristics can be monitored and calibrated. The proposed method is compared with the conventional matched filter-based calibration results and verified by simulation results and beampatterns. One of the primary causes of fires at construction sites is welding sparks. Fire detection systems utilizing computer vision technology offer a unique opportunity to monitor fires in construction sites. However, little effort has been made to date in regard to real-time tracking of small sparks that can lead to major fires at construction sites. In this study, a novel method is proposed to detect welding sparks in real-time contour detection with deep learning parameter tuning. An automatic parameter tuning algorithm employing a convolutional neural network was developed to identify the optimum hue saturation value. Additional filtering methods regarding the non-welding zone and a contour area-based filter were also newly developed to enhance the accuracy of welding spark prediction. The method was evaluated using 230 welding spark images and 104 videos. The results obtained from the welding images indicate that the suggested model for detecting welding sparks achieves a precision of 74.45% and a recall of 63.50% when noise images, such as flashing and reflection light, were removed from the dataset. Furthermore, our findings demonstrate that the proposed model is effective in capturing the number of welding sparks in the video dataset, with a 95.2% accuracy in detecting the moment when the number of welding sparks reaches its peak. Tower cranes are generally used in modern construction projects due to their exclusive and flexible performance for material transportation in complex workspaces. Although traditional deep learning vision-based methods have proven their effectiveness in construction site monitoring, a shortage of realistic training images and inefficiencies in them have been an obstacle in achieving effective tower crane monitoring. To deal with this issue, this paper presents a database-free approach for timely productivity monitoring of tower crane operations. Using a synthetic model, the authors construct a research framework to effectively generate training images on deep learning–powered object detection. Additionally, an enhanced tracking algorithm collaborating with unsupervised clustering-driven postprocessing enables stable performance for tracking resources. Further, logical ontology-based activity recognition constructed on domain-specific knowledge takes place to estimate time-to-time operation of the tower crane. The curtainwall installation was selected to represent the dynamicity and variability of tower crane operations for which it has been difficult to apply traditional deep learning technologies. Results displayed that the intended framework successfully produced 300,000 training images in 1 h, about 500 times faster than human resources, and an enhanced tracker performed well even in the case of unsatisfactory detection results. It is also proved that a performance of activity analysis was acceptable to 93.58% accuracy. The results demonstrate that the proposed framework has proven remarkable data generation speed with little manual input and good performance of operational-level activity analysis. These findings can automate the monitoring process of tower cranes' operations and the productivity of curtainwall installation, assisting construction project decision making. Furthermore, such efficient methods are less time-consuming and can handle background scene changes effortlessly, building customized models in less time and to less cost, thus buffering the practical gap of applying vision-based technologies into visually dynamic construction sites. In order to formulate and implement a community-based suicide prevention program, as well as evaluate the effectiveness of these programs, it is necessary to understand the epidemiological characteristics of self-harm. Clinical data were collected from the National Emergency Department Information System (NEDIS) data panel in Korea for patients seen after self-harm episodes. Socioeconomic factors were collected from Statistics Korea. Variables representing SP provisions (SPPs) were collected from the Korea Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Increasing the number of mental health providers resulted in lower annual emergency department visit rate after self-harm (VRSH) in the entire population, as well as in both the young and elderly populations. An increase in the mental health budget led to a significant reduction in VRSHs. However, the number of suicide prevention centers did not have any significant association with the VRSH. The correlation between the structural phase transition (SPT) and oxygen vacancy in SrRuO3 (SRO) thin films was investigated by in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS). In situ XRD shows that the SPT occurs from a monoclinic SRO phase to a tetragonal SRO phase near ∼200 °C, regardless of the pressure environment. On the other hand, significant core level shifts in both the Ru and Sr photoemission spectra are found under ultrahigh vacuum, but not under the oxygen pressure environment. The directions and behavior of the core level shift of Ru and Sr are attributed to the formation of oxygen vacancy across the SPT temperature of SRO. The analysis of in situ XRD and AP-XPS results provides an evidence for the formation of metastable surface oxide possibly due to the migration of internal oxygen atoms across the SPT temperature, indicating the close relationship between oxygen vacancy and SPT in SRO thin films. Despite the likely relevance of socio-cultural context, very few studies have examined the influence of cultural values on teachers' perceptions of gifted students' leadership development. This study chose three nations representing collectivistic to individualistic contexts and compared how 478 teachers from these countries (South Korea = 176, 36.8%, Australia = 169, 35.4%, U.S. = 133, 27.8%) differed in their beliefs about the prevalence and development of gifted students' leadership talent. Differences were found between the individualistic (Australia and the U.S.) and collectivistic (South Korea) settings in their beliefs regarding which students have leadership potential; their judgments about effective leadership styles and leader qualities; their perceptions of gifted students' qualifications as future leaders; and their preferred criteria for recommending students for a leadership education program. Although unable to identify causal relationships, this study nevertheless cautiously suggests that leadership and leaders are intertwined with culturally mediated values and practices. To the best of our knowledge, few studies have utilized cold plasma to improve soybean protein extraction yield and the functional properties of soybean protein. In this study, we aimed to assess the benefits of remote plasma treatments on soybean with respect to the utilization of soybean protein. This study involved two different sample forms (whole and crushed beans), two different plasma chemistry modes (ozone and nitrogen oxides [NOx = NO + NO2]), and a novel pressure-swing reactor. Crushed soybeans were significantly affected by NOx-mode plasma treatment. Crushed soybeans treated with NOx-mode plasma had the best outcomes, wherein the protein extraction yield increased from 31.64% in the control to 37.90% after plasma treatment. The water binding capacity (205.50%) and oil absorption capacity (267.67%) of plasma-treated soybeans increased to 190.88% and 246.23 % of the control, respectively. The emulsifying activity and emulsion stability slightly increased compared to those of the control. The secondary structure and surface hydrophobicity were altered. The remote plasma treatment of crushed soybeans increased soybean protein extraction yield compared to plasma-treated whole beans as well as untreated beans and altered the structural and physicochemical properties of soybean proteins. Biosignals from wearable sensors have shown great potential for capturing environmental distress that pedestrians experience from negative stimuli (e.g., abandoned houses, poorly maintained sidewalks, graffiti, and so forth). This physiological monitoring approach in an ambulatory setting can mitigate the subjectivity and reliability concerns of traditional self-reported surveys and field audits. However, to date, most prior work has been conducted in a controlled setting and there has been little investigation into utilizing biosignals captured in real-life settings. This research examines the usability of biosignals (electrodermal activity, gait patterns, and heart rate) acquired from real-life settings to capture the environmental distress experienced by pedestrians. We collected and analyzed geocoded biosignals and self-reported stimuli information in real-life settings. Data was analyzed using spatial methods with statistical and machine learning models. Results show that the machine learning algorithm predicted location-based collective distress of pedestrians with 80% accuracy, showing statistical associations between biosignals and the self-reported stimuli. This method is expected to advance our ability to sense and react to not only built environmental issues but also urban dynamics and emergent events, which together will open valuable new opportunities to integrate human biological and physiological data streams into future built environments and/or walkability assessment applications. As interest in online learning has increased, studies utilizing a social system for the innovation of lecture/learning environments have attracted attention recently. To establish a sustainable social environment in the online learning system, prior research investigated strategies to improve and manage the social presence of collaborators (e.g., students, AI facilitators, etc.) in an online lecture. Nevertheless, the negative effect of social presence was often neglected, which leads to a lack of comprehensiveness in managing social presence in an online lecturing environment. In the study, we intend to investigate the influence of social presence with both positive (student engagement) and negative (information overload) aspects on the learning experience by formulating a structural equation model. To test the model, we implemented an experimental online lecture system for the introductory session of human–computer interaction, and data from 83 participants were collected. The model was analyzed with Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The result shows the social presence of the collaborators influences both student engagement (other learners: β = 0.239, t = 2.187) and information overload (agent facilitator: β = 0.492, t = 6.163; other learners: β = 0.168, t = 1.672). The result also supports that student engagement is influenced by information overload as well (β = −0.490, t = 3.712). These positive and negative factors of social presence influence learning attainment (student engagement: β = 0.183, t = 1.680), satisfaction (student engagement: β = 0.385, t = 3.649; information overload: β = −0.292, t = 2.343), and learning efficacy (student engagement: β = 0.424, t = 2.543). Thus, it corroborates that a change in the level of social presence influences student engagement and information overload; furthermore, it confirms that the effect of changes in social presence is reflected differently depending on learning attainment and experience. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are beneficial bacteria for humans and animals. However, the characteristics and functions of LAB in insects remain unclear. Here, we isolated LAB from the gut of Riptortus pedestris, a pest that is a significant problem in soybean cultivation in Korea, and identified two Lactococcus lactis and one Enterococcus faecalis using matrix-associated laser desorption/ionization-time of flight and 16S rRNA analyses. All three LAB strains survived at pH 8, and L. lactis B103 and E. faecalis B105 survived at pH 9 for 24 h. In addition, these strains survived well in simulated gastric juice of humans containing pepsin and exhibited high resistance to bile salts. Two strains of L. lactis and one of E. faecalis maintained constant density (> 104 colony-forming units [CFU]/mL) at pH 2.5, but viability at pH 2.2 was strain-dependent. The three LAB were reinoculated into second-instar nymphs of R. pedestris and colonized well, reaching a constant density (> 105 CFU/gut) in the adult insect gut. Interestingly, feeding of these LAB increased the survival rate of insects compared to the negative control, with the largest increase seen for L. lactis B103. However, the LAB did not increase the weight or length of adult insects. These results indicate that insect-derived LAB possess the traits required for survival under gastrointestinal conditions and have beneficial effects on insect hosts. The LAB infection frequency of the wild bean bug populations was 89% (n = 18) in Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea. These LAB can be utilized as a novel probiotic in the cultivation of beneficial insects. Data are one of the important factors in artificial intelligence (AI). Moreover, in order for AI to understand the user and go beyond the role of a simple machine, the data contained in the user's self-disclosure is required. In this study, two types of robot self-disclosures (disclosing robot utterance, involving user utterance) are proposed to elicit higher self-disclosure from AI users. Additionally, this study examines the moderating effects of multi-robot conditions. In order to investigate these effects empirically and increase the implications of research, a field experiment with prototypes was conducted in the context of using smart speaker of children. The results indicate that both types of robot self-disclosures were effective in eliciting the self-disclosure of children. The interaction effect between disclosing robot and involving user was found to take a different direction depending on the sub-dimension of the user's self-disclosure. Predicting the side effects caused by drug combinations may facilitate the prescription of multiple medications in a clinical setting. So far, several prediction models of multidrug side effects based on knowledge graphs have been developed, showing good performance under constrained test conditions. However, these models usually focus on relationships between neighboring nodes of constituent drugs rather than whole nodes, and do not fully exploit the information about the occurrence of single drug side effects. The lack of learning the information on such relationships and single drug data may hinder improvement of performance. Moreover, compared with all possible drug combinations, the highly limited range of drug combinations used for model training prevents achieving high generalizability. To handle these problems, we propose a unified embedding-based prediction model using knowledge graph constructed with data of drug–protein and protein–protein interactions. Herein, single or multiple drugs or proteins are mapped into the same embedding space, allowing us to (1) jointly utilize side effect occurrence data associated with single drugs and multidrug combinations to train prediction models and (2) quantify connectivity strengths between drugs and other entities such as proteins. Due to these characteristics, it becomes also possible to utilize the quantified relationships between distant nodes, as well as neighboring nodes, of all possible multidrug combinations to regularize the models. Compared with existing methods, our model showed improved performance, especially in predicting the side effects of new combinations containing novel drugs that have no clinical information on polypharmacy effects. When anger is abruptly triggered during driving, it becomes difficult to control one's feelings. In this situation, other people can help mediate the angry emotional state through social interaction. However, it is not feasible to expect a passenger's help for controlling the driver's anger during every single drive. Failure to control the driver's anger can lead to road rage, which can cause a critical danger. In this study, we addressed these concerns by designing and evaluating a driving companion bot that helps drivers control their anger. The bot was designed to deliver verbal comments which was developed based on five different cognitive coping strategies to the driver when the driver faced anger-inducing situations while driving. A within-subjects lab experiment was conducted with 38 participants who had driver's licences. The results indicated that the use of a blaming others coping strategy was the most effective for anger reduction, perceived empathy, and companionship with no additional cognitive load compared to other strategies. Feedback from a post-experiment interview was also presented to discuss the long-term application of the study results. The evolutionary plant-pathogen arms race has equipped plants with the immune system that can defend against pathogens. Pattern-triggered immunity and effector-triggered immunity are two major branches of innate immunity that share immune responses, including oxidative bursts, transcriptional reprogramming, and cell wall modifications such as lignin deposition. In a previous study, we reported that lignin rapidly accumulates in pathogen-infected Arabidopsis leaves and acts as a mechanical barrier, spatially restricting pathogens and cell death. Lignin deposition into the cell wall is a three-step process: monolignol biosynthesis, transport, and polymerization. While monolignol biosynthesis and polymerization are relatively well understood, the mechanism of monolignol transport remains unclear. In this study, we show that macroautophagy/autophagy modulates pathogen-induced lignin formation. Lignification and other immune responses were impaired in autophagy-defective atg (autophagy-related) mutants. In microscopy analyses, monolignols formed punctate structures in response to pathogen infection and colocalized with autophagic vesicles. Furthermore, autophagic activity and lignin accumulation were both enhanced in dnd1 (defense, no death 1) mutant with elevated disease resistance but no cell death and crossing dnd1-1 with atg mutants resulted in a lignin deficit, further supporting that lignin formation requires autophagy. A novel plasma treatment source for generating cylindrical plasma on the surface of titanium dental implants is developed herein. Using the titanium implant as an electrode and the packaging wall as a dielectric barrier, a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma was generated, allowing the implant to remain sterile. Numerical and experimental investigations were conducted to determine the optimal discharge conditions for eliminating hydrocarbon impurities, which are known to degrade the bioactivity of the implant. XPS measurement confirmed that plasma treatment reduced the amount of carbon impurities on the implant surface by approximately 60%. Additionally, in vitro experiments demonstrated that the surface treatment significantly improved cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation. Collectively, we proposed a plasma treatment source for dental implants that successfully removes carbon impurities and facilitate the osseointegration of SLA implants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although laser scanning microscopy is a pivotal imaging tool in biomedical research, optical scattering from tissue limits the depth of the imaging. To overcome this limitation, we propose a scheme called ultrasound-induced optical clearing microscopy, which makes use of temporary, localized optical clearing based on ultrasound-induced gas bubbles. In this method, bubbles are generated by high-intensity pulsed ultrasound at a desired depth and subsequently maintained by low-intensity continuous ultrasound during imaging. As a result, optical scattering and unwanted changes in the propagation direction of the incident photons are minimized in the bubble cloud, and thus the laser can be tightly focused at a deeper imaging plane. Through phantom and ex vivo experiments, we demonstrate that ultrasound-induced optical clearing microscopy is capable of increasing the imaging depth by a factor of six or more, while the resolution is similar to that of conventional laser scanning microscopy. Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) shell, an abundant by-product of peanut production, contains a complex combination of organic compounds, including flavonoids. Changes in the total phenolic content, flavonoid content, antioxidant capacities, and skin aging-related enzyme (tyrosinase, elastase, and collagenase)-inhibitory activities of peanut shell were investigated after treatment in pressure swing reactors under controlled gas conditions using surface dielectric barrier discharge with different plasma (NOx and O3) and temperature (25 and 150 °C) treatments. Plasma treatment under ozone-rich conditions at 150 °C significantly affected the total phenolic (270.70 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g) and flavonoid (120.02 mg catechin equivalent (CE)/g) contents of peanut shell compared with the control (253.94 and 117.74 mg CE/g, respectively) (p < 0.05). In addition, with the same treatment, an increase in functional compound content clearly enhanced the antioxidant activities of components in peanut shell extracts. However, the NOx-rich treatment was significantly less effective than the O3 treatment (p < 0.05) in terms of the total phenolic content, flavonoid content, and antioxidant activities. Similarly, peanut shells treated in the reactor under O3-rich plasma conditions at 150 ℃ had higher tyrosinase, elastase, and collagenase inhibition rates (55.72%, 85.69%, and 86.43%, respectively) compared to the control (35.81%, 80.78%, and 83.53%, respectively). Our findings revealed that a reactor operated with O3-rich plasma-activated gas at 150 °C was better-suited for producing functional industrial materials from the by-products of peanuts. Persistence is a bet-hedging strategy in bacterial populations that increases antibiotic tolerance and leads to the establishment of latent infections. In this study, we demonstrated that a synthetic non-toxic taxane-based reversal agent (tRA), developed as an inhibitor of ABC transporter systems in mammalian cancer cells, enhanced antibiotic killing of persister populations from different pathogens, including Burkholderia, Pseudomonas, Francisella, and Yersinia. Acting as an inhibitor of bacterial efflux at 100 nM, tRA99020 enhanced antibiotic efficiency and suppressed the production of natural products of Burkholderia species polyketide synthase (PKS) function. We demonstrate that the metabolites produced by PKS in response to stress by different antibiotics act as inhibitors of mammalian histone deacetylase activity and stimulate cell death. Applying a single-molecule fluorescence in situ hybridization (smFISH) assay, we analyzed on a single-cell level the activation profiles of the persistence regulating pks gene in Burkholderia thailandensis treated with tRA99020 and antibiotics. We posit that a multi-pronged approach encompassing antibiotic therapies and inhibition of efflux systems and fatty acid catabolism will be required for efficient eradication of persistent bacterial populations. The spatial distributions of dissolved lead (Pb) concentrations and stable Pb isotope ratios in the Ulleung Basin, East/Japan Sea, were investigated to identify the Pb source, the behavior of Pb in seawater, and the relationship between Pb isotopes and water masses. The Pb concentrations showed a surface maximum and rapidly decreased with increasing water depth. In the slope area, Pb concentrations increased near the seafloor due to diffusive flux from the sediments. The Pb concentrations in the surface layer were higher than in the Northwest Pacific Ocean and western Philippine Sea due to the proximity and downwind location of the sampling site from a Pb source area. The bottom Pb concentrations were lower in the study area than in the open ocean, indicating a higher scavenging rate due to the presence of well-developed bottom boundary layers from the continental slope to the basin. The Pb isotope ratios obtained from the continental slope and basin area were relatively constant among water masses. The Pb isotope ratios in the surface layer were similar to those of coal from northern China, which may indicate Pb supply from coal combustion in China. Meanwhile, Pb in the bottom water had a similar isotopic signature to Russian ore deposits and coal, indicating that bottom Pb is associated with thermohaline circulation in the East/Japan Sea. The Pb isotope ratios of the intermediate layer were constant across the depths of East Sea Central Water (ESCW) and were similar to aerosols measured previously (in 2003–2004) around Ulleung Island, which may indicate the timing of ESCW formation. Transcription, in which RNA polymerases (RNAPs) produce RNA from DNA, is the first step of gene expression. As such, it is highly regulated either by trans-elements like protein factors and/or by cis-elements like specific sequences on the DNA. Lambdoid phage HK022 contains a cis-element, put, which suppresses pausing and termination during transcription of the early phage genes. The putRNA transcript solely performs the anti-pausing/termination activities by interacting directly with the E.coli RNAP elongation complex (EC) by an unknown structural mechanism. In this study, we reconstituted putRNA-associated ECs and determined the structures using cryo-electron microscopy. The determined structures of putRNA-associated EC, putRNA-absent EC, and σ70-bound EC suggest that the putRNA interaction with the EC counteracts swiveling, a conformational change previously identified to promote pausing and σ70 might modulate putRNA folding via σ70-dependent pausing during elongation. HK022 put is an RNA element that inhibits transcription termination without aids from protein factors. A new high-gain antenna structure is proposed for mmWave 5G and potentially for B5G and 6G applications. The proposed antenna is configured by a planar segmented patch structure that has a radiator size comparable to the conventional patch but achieves more than 3 dB gain enhancement without a help of superstrate stack-up layer. The proposed planar segmented antenna (PSA) induces multiple magnetic currents through multiple segmented conductors, resulting in a strong magnetic field circulation around the conductors. Only one conductor requires an excitation port and each segmented conductor has a shorting pin to synchronize resonance currents. To verify the PSA operation, several prototypes were fabricated at 28 GHz with the identical volume of $1.213\,\,\lambda _{0} \times 1.213\,\,\lambda _{0} \times 0.113\,\,\lambda _{0}$ , including the ground plane. The maximum measured impedance bandwidth of the single PSA was 23.1%. Furthermore, the measured maximum antenna gain was 11.5 dBi, whereas the same sized reference patch antenna showed only 6.3 dBi. Software-Defined Networking (SDN) has aggressively grown in data center networks, telecommunication providers, and enterprises by virtue of its programmable and extensible control plane. Also, there have been many kinds of research on the security of SDN components along with the growth of SDN. Some of them have inspected network policy inconsistency problems that can severely cause network reliability and security issues in SDN. However, they do not consider whether a single network policy itself is corrupted during processing inside and between SDN components. In this paper, we thus focus on the question of how to automatically identify cases in which the SDN stack fails to prevent policy inconsistencies from arising among those components. We then present AudiSDN, an automated fuzz-testing framework designed to formulate test cases in which policy inconsistencies can arise in OpenFlow networks, the most prevalent SDN protocol. To prove its feasibility, we applied AudiSDN to two widely used SDN controllers, Floodlight and ONOS, and uncovered three separate CVEs (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) that cause the network policy inconsistencies among SDN components. Furthermore, we investigate the design flaws that cause the inconsistencies in modern SDN components, suggesting specific validations to address such a serious but understudied pragmatic concern.
