Abstract

The article considers the place of hip hop in the personal and community identity of American Muslims. The author argues that American Islamic hip hop functions as a means of creating an authentic American Muslim culture. The author interviewed nine American Muslims involved in the hip hop community.

Abstract

The article offers the author's perspective on the ability of the American Muslim community to think critically and act critically around issues of race, power and privilege in the U.S. The author shares her comment on "My Name is Khan," a Bollywood film by the acclaimed Indian filmmaker Karan Johar that hit theaters in the U.S. The author points out the issue on white supremacy, which she referred to as an ideology in which whiteness is not only eternally good and great and but also the ideal.
