Background: In the current study, we evaluated whether atopic dermatitis (AD) affects the entire body rather than being limited to skin barrier damage and inflammation. We hypothesized that medium-term exposure of distant organs to systemic inflammatory cytokines in sub-chronic inflammatory skin diseases has detrimental effects on distant tissues. Results: Our findings demonstrated the dysregulation of genes and pathways associated with inflammation and the skin barrier, as well as genes and pathways involved in muscle development that respond to chemicals or stress in muscle tissues, all of which were reversed by hydrocortisone (Hc) administration. The expression of Ces1d showed significant differences during disease onset and after treatment in both skin and skeletal muscle, suggesting that Ces1d is likely responsible for the alleviation of subchronic AD. Conclusions: Using NC/Nga mice with AD-like symptoms, we compared the transcriptomes of the skeletal muscle (a tissue that is relatively distant from the skin) with those of the skin (the lesion induction site) before and after disease induction, after which Hc was administered. Although further study is needed to better understand the effects of Ces1d on AD, skeletal muscle was associated with AD pathogenesis, and AD-like symptoms appeared to affect the body in a systemic manner. Background: Interest in post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) syndrome following COVID-19 infection has been increasing. Maintaining quality of life (QoL) is vital for airline crews because they work in a special environment, where they are responsible for the passengers' safety. This study aims to closely investigate factors affecting the QoL of airline crews, including post-COVID-19 syndrome. Methods : This study was designed as a cross-sectional survey, comprising 167 crews. Findings : Age-specific significant differences were observed in social, overall, and total QoL scores. The physical domain QoL was significantly higher in the cockpit crews than that in the cabin crews. Significant differences were found in psychological and overall QoL depending on years of continuous service. Social domain and environmental QoL were lower in those who had no symptoms after being diagnosed with COVID-19 than in those who were symptomatic. Among the participants, 4.2% had post-COVID-19 syndrome, indicating significant differences in the physical domain, depending on whether they exhibit post-COVID-19 syndrome. Conclusion : It is urgent to develop measures to increase the QoL of airline crews, investigate post-COVID-19 syndrome before returning to work, and develop strategies to manage it. Application to practice : The QoL among airline crews differed not only by the demographic characteristics of the participants but also by the presence of symptoms during COVID-19 diagnosis and post-COVID-19 syndrome. Higher QoL among airline crews is associated with the safety of both airline crews and passengers. Background: Potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) are prevalent in older adults with dementia and subsequent falls or fall-related injuries. The present study determined the risk of falls or fall-related injuries associated with PIM use in older adults with dementia. Methods: The National Health Insurance Service-Elderly Cohort Database 2.0 (NHIS-ECDB 2.0) was used for this self-controlled case series (SCCS) study. This study included 1430 participants who went through exposure and non-exposure periods of PIM application among patients with dementia and experienced outcome events of falls or fall-related injuries between January 2016 and December 2019. The incidence of falls or fall-related injuries during the exposure and post-exposure periods was compared with that during the non-exposure period. Beers Criteria were used to define PIMs in patients with dementia. Negative binomial regression was conducted. The incidence rate ratio (IRR) was used to determine the risk of falls or fall-related injuries. Results: During the exposure periods in which falls or fall-related injuries occurred, the mean number of PIMs among patients with dementia was 3.76 (SD = 2.99), and the most commonly used PIMs among patients with dementia were first-generation antihistamines (n = 283; 59.1%). Compared to the non-exposure period, the adjusted IRR during the exposure period was 1.57 (95% CI = 1.39–1.76). The risk of falls or fall-related injuries was increased when PIM use in patients with dementia was initiated (1–14 days: IRR = 2.76, 95% CI = 2.31–3.28; 15–28 days: IRR = 1.95, 95% CI = 1.48–2.56; ≥ 29 days: IRR = 1.17, 95% CI = 1.01–1.35). Especially, an increased risk of falls or fall-related injuries was associated with greater PIM use among patients with dementia. Conclusion: Among older adults with dementia, PIMs significantly increase the risk of falls and fall-related injuries. The demand for eco-friendly wearable sensors is driving the exploration of stretchable, biocompatible, conductive, and recyclable materials for detecting electromechanical signals from the human body. Herein, a straightforward method for producing stretchable, conductive, water-permeable, low-hysteresis, and recyclable hybrid films is proposed, based on a combination of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and lab-synthesized poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (L-PEDOT:PSS). Fine-tuning the film composition yields a stretchable and high-performance sensing material with ultralow hysteresis. The composite film is stable even when subjected to 5000 strained stretch-release cycles and exhibits an efficient thermoresistive response. The on-skin sensor derived from the HEC/L-PEDOT:PSS composite conforms to diverse body movements without sacrificing structural integrity. The sensors exhibit high sensitivity, stability, rapid response times, and low power consumption, enabling efficient monitoring of subtle human activities, such as handwriting, frowning, air flow, and even diaphragmatic breathing. Our sensors not only demonstrate excellent recycling, but also exhibit almost complete recovery of both mechanical and electrical functions upon recycling. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the HEC/PEDOT:PSS composite as a multifunctional and recyclable on-skin sensor. HEC/L-PEDOT:PSS composite films are promising for the advancement of on-skin sensors and will contribute to the development of high-performance, eco-friendly, and zero-waste wearable sensors. Background: Polypharmacy is a global public health concern. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of polypharmacy and trends in the use of commonly used and potentially inappropriate medications among older Korean patients. Methods: Individuals aged ≥ 65 years who were prescribed any medication between 2014 and 2018 were selected from the Korean National Health Information Database. Joinpoint regression analyses were used to determine trends in the age-adjusted polypharmacy rates by age group. The prescription rates of the most commonly used medications and the most commonly used potentially inappropriate medications were analysed by year or age group for patients with polypharmacy using the chi-square and proportion difference tests. Results: This study included 1,849,968 patients, 661,206 (35.7%) of whom had polypharmacy. Age-adjusted polypharmacy rates increased significantly between 2014 and 2018 (P = 0.046). Among patients with polypharmacy, the most commonly prescribed medications were aspirin (100 mg), atorvastatin, metformin, glimepiride, and rosuvastatin. The most commonly prescribed and potentially inappropriate medications were alprazolam, diazepam, amitriptyline, zolpidem, and dimenhydrinate. There was a significant decrease in the prescription rates for each of these drugs in 2018 compared with 2014 among patients with polypharmacy (all P < 0.001), whereas there was a significant increase in alprazolam prescription among patients aged ≥ 85 years when analysed by age group (P < 0.001). Conclusions: This study revealed an increasing prevalence of polypharmacy among older adults. Additionally, it highlighted that the utilisation of commonly prescribed potentially inappropriate medications, such as benzodiazepines and tricyclic antidepressants, has remained persistent, particularly among patients aged ≥ 85 years who practiced polypharmacy. Several members of the transforming growth factor beta (TGF‐β) superfamily regulate the proliferation, differentiation, and function of bone‐forming osteoblasts and bone‐resorbing osteoclasts. However, it is still unknown whether Nodal, a member of the TGF‐β superfamily, serves a function in bone cells. In this study, we found that Nodal did not have any function in osteoblasts but instead negatively regulated osteoclast differentiation. Nodal inhibited RANKL‐induced osteoclast differentiation by downregulating the expression of pro‐osteoclastogenic genes, including c‐fos, Nfatc1, and Blimp1, and upregulating the expression of antiosteoclastogenic genes, including Bcl6 and Irf8. Nodal activated STAT1 in osteoclast precursor cells, and STAT1 downregulation significantly reduced the inhibitory effect of Nodal on osteoclast differentiation. These findings indicate that Nodal activates STAT1 to downregulate or upregulate the expression of pro‐osteoclastogenic or antiosteoclastogenic genes, respectively, leading to the inhibition of osteoclast differentiation. In addition to cellular damage, ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury induces substantial damage to the mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. In this study, we sought to determine whether impaired mitochondrial function owing to IR could be restored by transplanting mitochondria into the heart under ex vivo IR states. Additionally, we aimed to provide preliminary results to inform therapeutic options for ischemic heart disease (IHD). Healthy mitochondria isolated from autologous gluteus maximus muscle were transplanted into the hearts of Sprague-Dawley rats damaged by IR using the Langendorff system, and the heart rate and oxygen consumption capacity of the mitochondria were measured to confirm whether heart function was restored. In addition, relative expression levels were measured to identify the genes related to IR injury. Mitochondrial oxygen consumption capacity was found to be lower in the IR group than in the group that underwent mitochondrial transplantation after IR injury (p < 0.05), and the control group showed a tendency toward increased oxygen consumption capacity compared with the IR group. Among the genes related to fatty acid metabolism, Cpt1b (p < 0.05) and Fads1 (p < 0.01) showed significant expression in the following order: IR group, IR + transplantation group, and control group. These results suggest that mitochondrial transplantation protects the heart from IR damage and may be feasible as a therapeutic option for IHD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global energy policies have urged power consumption reductions for electronic devices. However, this is inconsistent with the users' need for enhanced device performance. In this work, converse flexoelectricity is used to reduce power consumption while maintaining the superior display image quality of liquid crystal display (LCD). The first 1 Hz‐refresh‐rate and flicker‐free fringe‐field switching (FFS) LCD for a 13.4‐inch laptop are reported. A noticeable brightness deviation is inevitable when driving voltage polarity is altered during low‐frequency driving, which is caused by the flexoelectric effect and voltage‐holding failure. The nature of the converse flexoelectric contribution of mesogenic systems with the optimum flexoelectric coefficients and molecular polarity, and developed materials based on findings is investigated. The quality of static images and videos at 1‐ and 10 Hz refresh rates, respectively, is maintained, and the measured power consumptions are reduced by 83% and 47% compared to that at a 60 Hz refresh rate, and minimal flicker level is measured by −68 dB. Background: Polypharmacy and the use of potentially inappropriate medications are common among nursing home residents and are associated with negative outcomes. Although deprescribing has been proposed as a way to curtail these problems, the best way to implement multidisciplinary comprehensive medication review and deprescribing and its real impact in specific high-risk populations, such as nursing home residents, is still unclear. This multicenter randomized controlled clinical trial aims to assess the effects of a multidisciplinary mediation management program on medication use and health problems. Methods: A total of 1,672 residents aged ≥ 65 years from 22 nursing homes in South Korea who meet the targeted criteria, such as the use of ≥ 10 medications, are eligible to participate. The experimental group will receive a comprehensive medication review, deprescription, and multidisciplinary case conference with the help of platform. Outcomes will be measured at baseline, at the end of the intervention, as well as at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after the end of the intervention. The primary endpoints will be the rate of adverse drug events, number of potentially inappropriate medications/potentially inappropriate medication users/two or more central nervous system drug/ central nervous system drug users, delirium, emergency department visits, hospitalization, and falls. The secondary endpoint will be the number of medications taken and polypharmacy users. Discussion: Our trial design is unique in that it aims to introduce a structured operationalized clinical program focused on reducing polypharmacy and potentially inappropriate medications in a nursing home setting with large samples. Background: Liriope platyphylla and organic acids (humic and fulvic acids) as additives in the feedstock may aid in decreasing CH4 formation in the rumen. Based on previous studies, Hanwoo steers were raised with feedstock added with Liriope platyphylla and organic acids and their fecal samples were analyzed to determine the changes in their organic matter and nitrogen content determining the GHG emissions from feces in the form of CH4 and N2O. Methods: Ten Hanwoo cattle were provided with experimental diet and their weights were measured to determine harmful effects of experimental diet and measure fecal composition. To measure CH4 emission from the rumen in vitro, rumen fluid with Liriope platyphylla 1.0% and organic acids 0.05% added to the feed was prepared and incubated in triplicate. Result: The addition of Liriope platyphylla had a positive effect on immune function and blood composition, as well as CH4 reduction and further the addition of organic acids resulted in the lowering of CH4 emissions when compared with that of the control. This study presents a novel methodology for the fabrication of bioadhesives composed of poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA), which demonstrate superior mechanical properties. Hydrogels based on PHEA were effectively synthesized through a strategy that obviates the need for crosslinkers, utilizing in situ polymerization of high-concentration 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) monomers under persistent agitation. Optimal operational conditions, such as polymerization duration and HEA monomer concentration, were screened through rheological evaluations. In addition, the introduction of glycerol to the PHEA hydrogels yielded improvements in water-retention capacity, thus resolving limitations frequently observed in conventional aqueous-based hydrogels. Tests assessing adhesive properties indicated that the PHEA hydrogels, synthesized without crosslinkers, exhibited exceptional adhesion capabilities that exceeded those of commercially available tissue sealants. This economically viable and readily scalable fabrication technique provides a compelling pathway for the creation of robust, biocompatible bioadhesives well-suited for biomedical utilization. Human monocyte chemoattractant protein‐1 (MCP‐1) in mice has two orthologs, MCP‐1 and MCP‐5. MCP‐1, which is highly expressed in osteoclasts rather than in osteoclast precursor cells, is an important factor in osteoclast differentiation. However, the roles of MCP‐5 in osteoclasts are completely unknown. In this study, contrary to MCP‐1, MCP‐5 was downregulated during receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL)‐induced osteoclast differentiation and was considered an inhibitory factor in osteoclast differentiation. The inhibitory role of MCP‐5 in osteoclast differentiation was closely related to the increase in Ccr5 expression and the inhibition of IκB degradation by RANKL. Transgenic mice expressing MCP‐5 controlled by Mx‐1 promoter exhibited an increased bone mass because of a decrease in osteoclasts. We investigated the effect of Cr thin film deposition on the thermal stability and corrosion resistance of hot-dip aluminized steel. A high-quality Cr thin film was deposited on the surface of the Al-9 wt. % Si-coated steel sheets by physical vapor deposition. When the Al-Si coated steel sheets were exposed to a high temperature of 500°C, Fe from the steel substrate diffused into the Al-Si coating layer resulting in discoloration. However, the highly heat-resistant Cr thin film deposited on the Al-Si coating prevented diffusion and surface exposure of Fe, improving the heat and corrosion resistances of the Al-Si alloy coated steel sheet. Vacant parking slot detection using image classification has been studied for a long time. Currently, deep neural networks are widely used in this research field, and experts have concentrated on improving their performance. As a result, most experts are not concerned about the features extracted from the images. Thus, no one knows the crucial features of how neural networks determine whether a particular parking slot is full. This study divides the structures of neural networks into feature extraction and classification parts to address these issues. The output of the feature extraction parts is visualized through normalization and grayscale imaging. The visualized feature maps are analyzed to match the feature characteristics and classification results. The results show that a specific region of feature maps is activated if the parking slot is full. In addition, it is verified that different networks whose classification parts are identical extract similar features from parking slot images. This study demonstrates that feature map analyses help us find hidden characteristics of features and understand how neural networks operate. Our findings show a possibility that handcrafted algorithms using the features found by machine learning algorithms can replace neural network-based classification parts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Cilostazol is the only first-line medication for treating intermittent claudication, and the controlled-release (CR) formulation is associated with a lower prevalence of adverse events (AEs). Objective: The objective of the study was to assess the safety and effectiveness of cilostazol CR in patients with symptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD). Methods: In this multicentre (113 sites), open-label, prospective observational study, we evaluated the real-world safety and effectiveness of cilostazol CR 200 mg once daily in patients with symptomatic PAD treated in routine clinical settings. The primary endpoint was the incidence and severity of AEs, and their causal relationship with cilostazol CR. The secondary endpoint was the effectiveness of the drug, as assessed by each patient's physician, for improving intermittent claudication. Results: Among 2063 participants who received cilostazol CR for a mean duration of 88.6 days, 99 (4.80 %) experienced adverse drug reactions (ADRs), although no unexpected adverse reactions were observed. There was no significant difference in the incidence of ADRs according to patient demographics and comorbidities (all p > 0.05). The treatment was 'effective' in 1600 patients (78.93 %), although effectiveness significantly differed according to the patients' sex and the presence of comorbidities, including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and coronary artery disease (all p < 0.01). Onion bulbs are typically stored at lower storage temperature for a long time, permitting their year-round availability in the market. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationships among onion bulb quality, targeted major metabolites, and mineral nutrient contents in long-term cold-stored onion bulbs from four major different commercial onion packinghouses. Bulb fresh and dry weight, fructose, glucose, citric acid, total phenolic compounds, and ABTS were highest in Muan, compared with the other packinghouses. The contents of K, Mn, Zn, and Cu, the ratios of K/Mg, K/Ca, and Mn/Ca, and the contents of total phenolic compounds, total flavonoids, and total anthocyanins were highest in Hamyang, compared with the other packinghouses. The contents of individual free amino acids were most likely highest in Hamyang and Mungyeong packinghouses, compared with the other packinghouses. The overall responses of bulb quality, targeted major metabolites, and mineral nutrients substantially affected the differential expression pattern of principal component analysis among four commercial packinghouses. While fructose was positively correlated with glucose, it was negatively correlated with methionine, leucine, valine, isoleucine, and aspartic acid. Antioxidant activities in terms of ABTS and DPPH were negatively correlated with Mn but positively correlated with bulb dry weight, ho, and lightness. The collective results indicate that onion bulb quality was highly affected by commercial onion packinghouses, thus glucose and fructose were highly associated with amino acids and bulb dry weight with most bulb physiological parameters. Therefore, the commercial storage facility may play a pivotal role in the fluctuation of targeted major metabolites and mineral nutrients after long-term cold storage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Excess and repetitive glenohumeral external rotation (ER) is at a higher risk for shoulder injuries, which occurs frequently in professional sports and specific occupations. Current rehabilitation programs emphasize selective targeting of muscle activity, which can help restore dysfunctional muscle imbalances or prevent injuries. However, the impact of different body postures on GH muscle activity during ER exercises has not been fully understood. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate shoulder EMG activity for different body positions and humeral abduction angles during ER exercises. Method: Twenty-three healthy young men (age: 22.3 ± 2.3, height: 175.75 ± 4.02, mass: 75.37 ± 9.14) participated in this study. Surface Electromyography was recorded from seven shoulder muscles: upper trapezius, lower trapezius, serratus anterior, infraspinatus, and deltoid. Six ER exercises: three postures (sitting, supine lying, and prone lying) and two abduction angles (ABD; 45° and 90°) were tested using an isokinetic dynamometer. Results: During a sitting position, the lower trapezius/upper trapezius muscle activity ratios were significantly increased for sitting compared to supine lying and prone lying (p < 0.001, p = 0.004). Serratus anterior/upper trapezius co-contraction indices were significantly increased for 90° than 45° ABD (p < 0.001). MXenes possess the characteristics required for high‐performance supercapacitors, such as high metallic conductivity and electrochemical activity, but their full potential remains unrealized owing to their tendency to self‐restack when fabricated into an electrode. Designing an MXene interlayer with an effective intercalant has, therefore, become an important criterion to alleviate the restacking issue while also synergistically interact with MXene to further improve its electrochemical activity. This study reports the intercalation of 1D π‐d conjugated coordination polymer (Ni‐BTA) within the Ti3C2Tx nanosheet for the fabrication of a highly efficient supercapacitor electrode. Ni‐BTA, which consists of a nickel center and 1,2,4,5‐benzenetetramine (BTA) organic chain, is uniformly intercalated by direct synthesis on the abundant oxygen terminals on the Ti3C2Tx nanosheet surface. The intercalated Ni‐BTA acts as an effective charge carrier transportation pathway through its 1D stretched delocalized π‐d electrons while participating in pseudocapacitive activity with the Ni centers. As a result, the Ni‐BTA/MXene film exhibits excellent rate performance and a gravimetric specific capacitance of 264.4 F g−1 at 5 mV s−1. This magnitude is retained up to 94.6% after 10 000 cycles. The oral microbiome is an important component of the microbiome in the human body. Although the association of the oral microbiome with various diseases, including periodontitis and cancer, has been reported, information on how the oral microbiome is related to health-related indicators in healthy populations is still insufficient. In this study, we examined the associations of the oral microbiome with 15 metabolic and 19 complete blood count (CBC)- based markers in 692 healthy Korean individuals. The richness of the oral microbiome was associated with four CBC markers and one metabolic marker. Compositional variation in the oral microbiome was significantly explained by four markers: fasting glucose, fasting insulin, white blood cell count, and total leukocyte count. Furthermore, we found that these biomarkers were associated with the relative abundances of numerous microbial genera, such as Treponema, TG5, and Tannerella. By identifying the relationship between the oral microbiome and clinical biomarkers in a healthy population, our study presents a direction for future studies on oral microbiome-based diagnosis and interventions. The goal of the 8th edition of the Clinical Practice Guidelines for Obesity is to help primary care physician provide safe, effective care to patients with obesity by offering evidence-based recommendations to improve the quality of treatment. The Committee for Clinical Practice Guidelines comprised individuals with multidisciplinary expertise in obesity management. A steering board of seven experts oversaw the entire project. Recommendations were developed as the answers to key questions formulated in patient/problem, intervention, comparison, outcomes (PICO) format. Guidelines underwent multi-level review and cross-checking and received endorsement from relevant scientific societies. This edition of the guidelines includes criteria for diagnosing obesity, abdominal obesity, and metabolic syndrome; evaluation of obesity and its complications; weight loss goals; and treatment options such as diet, exercise, behavioral therapy, pharmacotherapy, and bariatric and metabolic surgery for Korean people with obesity. Compared to the previous edition of the guidelines, the current edition includes five new topics to keep up with the constantly evolving field of obesity: diagnosis of obesity, obesity in women, obesity in patients with mental illness, weight maintenance after weight loss, and the use of information and communication technology-based interventions for obesity treatment. This edition of the guidelines features has improved organization, more clearly linking key questions in PICO format to recommendations and key references. We are confident that these new Clinical Practice Guidelines for Obesity will be a valuable resource for all healthcare professionals as they describe the most current and evidence-based treatment options for obesity in a well-organized format. The reuse and recycling of critical raw materials is limited, as waste electrical and electronic recycling focuses on base and precious metals, and device component reuse is in its infancy. To help to address this issue this paper provides the conceptual design of a Digital Product Passport based circular supply management system. To enable the recovery of critical raw materials at component and material levels for reuse and recycling. The works include an assessment of existing critical raw materials information management and an information needs identification survey, with 10 manufacturers, producer responsibility organisations, collectors and recyclers. The needs were used to generate 14 key product information management processes and exchanges that when implemented form a Digital Product Passport based circular supply management system. Information managed via a physical-digital linkage through individual product tags includes product registrations, materials declarations, life cycle status updates, the sorting of products at collection points based on critical raw material contents, and flagging of products for critical raw materials component extraction. A dataspace-based IT systems architecture is proposed for the implementation of the supply management system taking into account global and European information standards. Background: Residents in long-term care (LTC) facilities (LTCFs) may have multimorbidity and be unable to self-administer medication. Thus, due to the risk of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs), epidemiological studies on PIM use and its associated factors should be conducted to ensure safe medication use for residents in LTCFs. Objective: We evaluated PIM use among residents of LTCF and the associated factors in residents of LTCFs in Korea using a nationwide database. Methods: This cross-sectional study used the Korea National Health Insurance Service Senior Cohort (KNHIS-SC) database 2.0 of the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS), a single public insurer in Korea. We analyzed older adults aged =65 years who were residents of LTCFs in 2018, using the KNHIS-SC database. The 2019 American Geriatrics Society (AGS) Beers criteria was used for PIM identification. The prevalence of PIM use was defined as the proportion of LTCF residents who received PIM prescriptions at least once. We evaluated the frequency of prescriptions, including PIMs, and determined the most frequently used PIMs. We also conducted a multivariable logistic regression analysis to identify the factors associated with PIM use. Results: The prevalence of PIM among the LTCF residents was 81.6%. The prevalence of PIM was 74.9% for LTC grades 1 or 2 (high dependence) and 85.2% for LTC grades 3-5 (low dependence). Quetiapine was the most frequently prescribed PIM, followed by chlorpheniramine. The low dependence level was significantly associated with PIM use (odds ratio of LTC grades 3-5: 1.49, 95% confidence interval 1.32-1.68, reference: LTC grades 1 or 2); moreover, the number of medical institutions visited, and medications emerged as primary influencing factors. Determining whether weekend catch-up sleep (CUS) is related to high risk of depression in the general middle-aged population in Korea. This study is a cross-sectional study analyzing data from 2016 to 2017 collected in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey VII-1, 2; less than 35 years, and more than 65 years were excluded. Interviews on sociodemographic characteristics, mood and sleep-related profiles, and comorbid medical conditions were conducted. Participants were divided into three groups according to weekday sleeping time (< 6 h, 6 to ≤ 8 h, and ≥ 8 h). Weekend CUS was identified when nocturnal sleep extension occurred over the weekend. The risk of depression was evaluated using the PHQ-9. The PHQ-9 score differed among the three groups. The prevalence of moderate to severe depressive symptom and PHQ-9 score ≥ 10 was the highest in the group sleep over 8 h and the next highest in the group sleep less than 6 h. In the group sleep less than 6 h, PHQ-9 score ≥ 10 was significantly higher in the without CUS group than the with CUS group. The risk of depression in middle-aged individuals was associated with both short and long sleep duration, and the severity and prevalence of depression were lower in the group with CUS when a shortened sleep pattern was observed. Cav3.1 T‐type Ca2+ channels play pivotal roles in neuronal low‐threshold spikes, visceral pain, and pacemaker activity. Phosphorylation has been reported to potently regulate the activity and gating properties of Cav3.1 channels. However, systematic identification of phosphorylation sites (phosphosites) in Cav3.1 channel has been poorly investigated. In this work, we analyzed rat Cav3.1 protein expressed in HEK‐293 cells by mass spectrometry, identified 30 phosphosites located at the cytoplasmic regions, and illustrated them as a Cav3.1 phosphorylation map which includes the reported mouse Cav3.1 phosphosites. Site‐directed mutagenesis of the phosphosites to Ala residues and functional analysis of the phospho‐silent Cav3.1 mutants expressed in Xenopus oocytes showed that the phospho‐silent mutation of the N‐terminal Ser18 reduced its current amplitude with accelerated current kinetics and negatively shifted channel availability. Remarkably, the phospho‐silent mutations of the C‐terminal Ser residues (Ser1924, Ser2001, Ser2163, Ser2166, or Ser2189) greatly reduced their current amplitude without altering the voltage‐ dependent gating properties. In contrast, the phosphomimetic Asp mutations of Cav3.1 on the N‐ and C‐terminal Ser residues reversed the effects of the phospho‐ silent mutations. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that the multiple phosphosites of Cav3.1 at the N‐ and C‐terminal regions play crucial roles in the regulation of the channel activity and voltage‐dependent gating properties. Soft, stretchable, conductive thin films have propelled to the forefront of applications in stretchable sensors for on-skin health monitoring. Stretchable conductive films require high conformability, stretchability, and mechanical/chemical stability when integrated into the skin. Here, we present a highly stretchable, conductive, and transparent natural rubber/silver nanowire (AgNW)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) composite film. Overcoating the PEDOT:PSS layer results in outstanding mechanical robustness and chemical stability by suppressing the mechanical and chemical degradation of the nanowire networks. Moreover, the introduction of the organic surface modifier enhances the bonding strength between the natural rubber substrate and AgNW at the interface. The highly conformable composite films are integrated into multifunctional on-skin sensors for monitoring various human motions and biological signals with low-power consumption. We believe that the highly stretchable, robust, and conformable natural rubber/AgNW/PEDOT:PSS composite film can offer new opportunities for next-generation wearable sensors for body motion and physiological monitoring. Highly conductive, flexible, and durable silver nanowire (AgNW)-embedded carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) (s-CMC/PEDOT:PSS) composite films were investigated for application in wearable heaters and on-skin sensors. The electrical conductivities of the CMC/PEDOT:PSS composites were optimized by controlling the PEDOT:PSS weight ratio in CMC, and the sheet resistance decreased significantly from 6828 (CMC:PEDOT:PSS = 1:5) to 83 Ω/sq (CMC:PEDOT:PSS = 1:17). Furthermore, AgNW networks were embedded onto the surface of the CMC/PEDOT:PSS films to further enhance their conductivity. The introduction of AgNW networks resulted in a significant decrease in the sheet resistance of the composites from 81 to 7 Ω/sq. In addition, the s-CMC/PEDOT:PSS composite film exhibited high mechanical stability in repeated bending tests. The uniformly distributed AgNWs inside the composites enhanced the electrical contact between the conducting PEDOT:PSS domains in the CMC matrix. Based on the highly conductive, flexible, and robust s-CMC/PEDOT:PSS composite films, high-performance wearable heating devices and on-skin sensors were fabricated. The wearable heater achieves a high temperature of 159.5 ℃ with uniform temperature distribution. Furthermore, on-skin sensors with s-CMC/PEDOT:PSS composites were conformably integrated on human skin which successfully detected various human motions, including finger bending, wrist bending, skin touch, ankle motions, and walking in real-time. The sensors exhibit high sensing performance with high sensitivity, conformability, superior mechanical robustness, and low power consumption. Polypharmacy and its rising global prevalence is a growing public health burden. Using a large representative nationwide Korean cohort (N = 761,145), we conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study aiming to identify subpopulations of patients with polypharmacy and characterize their unique patterns through cluster analysis. Patients aged ≥ 30 years who were prescribed at least one medication between 2014 and 2018 were included in our study. Six clusters were identified: cluster 1 mostly included patients who were hospitalized for a long time (4.3 ± 5.3 days); cluster 2 consisted of patients with disabilities (100.0%) and had the highest mean number of prescription drugs (7.7 ± 2.8 medications); cluster 3 was a group of low-income patients (99.9%); cluster 4 was a group of high-income patients (80.2%) who frequently (46.4 ± 25.9 days) visited hospitals/clinics (7.3 ± 2.7 places); cluster 5 was mostly elderly (74.9 ± 9.8 years) females (80.3%); and cluster 6 comprised mostly middle-aged (56.4 ± 1.5 years) males (88.6%) (all P < 0.001). Patients in clusters 1–5 had more prescribed medications and outpatient visit days than those in cluster 6 (all P < 0.001). Given limited health care resources, individuals with any of the identified phenotypes may be preferential candidates for participation in intervention programs for optimal medication use. This study examines the levels of depression, anxiety, stress, and state and trait anger of cabin crews, as well as the differences in the main variables and general characteristics between the depression and anxiety groups, during the COVID-19 pandemic. This descriptive cross-sectional study used data from 161 Korean cabin crew members. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, independent t-tests, and chi-square tests. Of the participants, 62.7% were women, and 52.2% and 46.6% were classified into the depression and anxiety groups, respectively. No differences in the general characteristics between the non-depression and depression groups were found. However, in the anxiety group, there were significant differences in age, marital status, position, and work type during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the anxiety group showed a higher anger state (approximately 6.76 times higher than the normal group) than the depression group (approximately 4.90 times higher than the normal group). In a pandemic, airlines should screen cabin crews for depression and anxiety. The development and applications of mental health education for high-risk groups should include anger intervention. Cav1.2 channel phosphorylation plays an important role in regulating neuronal plasticity by action potential-dependent Ca2+ entry. Most studies of Cav1.2 regulation by phosphorylation have been reported in heart and muscles. Here, we identified phosphorylation sites of neuronal Cav1.2 channel protein purified from rat brain using mass spectrometry. The functional characterization of these phosphorylation sites showed altered voltage-dependent biophysical properties of the channel, without affecting current density. Conductive composite materials have attracted considerable interest of researchers for application in stretchable sensors for wearable health monitoring. In this study, highly stretchable and conductive composite films based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiopehe):poly (styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) (CMC-PEDOT:PSS) were fabricated. The composite films achieved excellent electrical and mechanical properties by optimizing the lab-synthesized PEDOT:PSS, dimethyl sulfoxide, and glycerol content in the CMC matrix. The optimized composite film exhibited a small increase of only 1.25-fold in relative resistance under 100% strain. The CMC-PEDOT:PSS composite film exhibited outstanding mechanical properties under cyclic tape attachment/detachment, bending, and stretching/releasing tests. The small changes in the relative resistance of the films under mechanical deformation indicated excellent electrical contacts between the conductive PEDOT:PSS in the CMC matrix, and strong bonding strength between CMC and PEDOT:PSS. We fabricated highly stretchable and conformable on-skin sensors based on conductive and stretchable CMC-PEDOT:PSS composite films, which can sensitively monitor subtle bio-signals and human motions such as respiratory humidity, drinking water, speaking, skin touching, skin wrinkling, and finger bending. Because of the outstanding electrical properties of the films, the on-skin sensors can operate with a low power consumption of only a few microwatts. While there are many studies that have reported methods for tracing the geographical origin of seafoods, most of them have focused on identifying parameters that can be used effectively and not the direct application of these methods. In this study, we attempted to differentiate the geographical origins of the Manila clam R. philippinarum collected from different sites in Korea, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and China using a combination of analyses based on dual-element isotopes, fatty acids (FAs), and compound-specific isotopic analysis of FAs. We hypothesized that a stepwise application of new parameters to unclassified samples could achieve this objective by integrating new information while reducing time and labor. The FA profiles and compound-specific carbon isotopic values of FAs were found to enhance the discrimination power of determining the geographic origin up to 100%. Our findings demonstrate the advantageousness of using several parameters simultaneously over the conventional method of employing individual analytical methods when identifying geographic origins of the Manila clam, which could have implications for tracing the origins of different shellfish species or other food products as well. Background/Aims: Gallbladder cancer is fatal, but fluorescent imaging technology can facilitate timely diagnosis and improve patient outcomes. Fluorophore-conjugated insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R) targeted antibodies were used to visualize gallbladder cancer in orthotopic tumor mouse models. Methods: Western blotting, flow cytometric analysis, and confocal microscopy detected the expression of IGF-1R in SNU-308, SNU-478, and SNU-1196 bile duct cancer cells. In vivo imaging of SNU-478 and SNU-1196 subcutaneous tumors and orthotopic gallbladder tumor models of SNU-478 were performed after injection with DyLight 650-conjugated IGF-1R antibody. Results: Western blotting and flow cytometric analysis showed that IGF-1R was expressed in bile duct cancer cells, and confocal microscopy demonstrated that IGF-1R antibody was able to bind to IGF-1R on the cell membrane. Fluorescent IGF-1R antibody injected into the mouse tail vein made subcutaneous tumors and orthotopic tumors become fluorescent. The intensity of fluorescence from the tumor was stronger than that from surrounding normal tissues. Histochemical examination confirmed that the tumor was located inside the gallbladder and adjacent liver parenchyma of mice. Conclusions: Our study showed that a fluorescent IGF-1R-targeted antibody could help detect gallbladder tumors. Neurogenin 1 (Ngn1) belongs to the basic helix–loop–helix (bHLH) transcription factor family and plays important roles in specifying neuronal differentiation. The present study aimed to determine whether forced Ngn1 expression contributes to bone homeostasis. Ngn1 inhibited the p300/CREB-binding protein-associated factor (PCAF)-induced acetylation of nuclear factor of activated T cells 1 (NFATc1) and runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2) through binding to PCAF, which led to the inhibition of osteoclast and osteoblast differentiation, respectively. In addition, Ngn1 overexpression inhibited the TNF-α- and IL-17A-mediated enhancement of osteoclast differentiation and IL-17A-induced osteoblast differentiation. Background: Fluorescent imaging may aid with the precise diagnosis and treatment of patients with gallbladder cancer. In this study, we sought to demonstrate whether the da Vinci® surgical system and Firefly™ camera could detect EGFR-targeted fluorescent images in orthotopic mouse models of gallbladder cancer. Methods: An orthotopic mouse model of gallbladder cancer was created by injecting NOZ gallbladder cancer cells mixed with Matrigel into the gallbladder. In vivo imaging of subcutaneous and orthotopic gallbladder tumors was performed after the injection of DyLight 650- or 800-conjugated EGFR antibody. Results: Western blotting, flow cytometry, and confocal microscopy showed the presence of EGFR in NOZ cells, but not in HEK293 cells. Subcutaneous NOZ cell tumors fluoresced after injection with fluorescent EGFR antibody, but subcutaneous HEK293 tumors did not. Fluorescent EGFR antibody made orthotopic NOZ tumors fluoresce, with an intensity stronger than that in the surrounding normal tissues. Histochemical examination confirmed the location of the tumors inside the gallbladder and adjacent liver parenchyma. Fluorescent signal was also detected in orthotopic gallbladder tumors with Firefly™ camera. Conclusion: Our study showed that fluorescent EGFR antibodies and the Firefly camera in the da Vinci system can detect fluorescing gallbladder tumors, which demonstrates their potential use for molecular imaging-based prevision surgery in the near future. The LIM-homeodomain transcription factor Lmx1b plays a key role in body pattern formation during development. Although Lmx1b is essential for the normal development of multiple tissues, its regulatory mechanism in bone cells remains unclear. Here, we demonstrated that Lmx1b negatively regulates bone morphogenic protein 2 (BMP2)-induced osteoblast differentiation. Overexpressed Lmx1b in the osteoblast precursor cells inhibited alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and nodule formation, as well as the expression of osteoblast maker genes, including runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx2), alkaline phosphatase (Alpl), bone sialoprotein (Ibsp), and osteocalcin (Bglap). Conversely, the knockdown of Lmx1b in the osteoblast precursors enhanced the osteoblast differentiation and function. Lmx1b physically interacted with and repressed the transcriptional activity of Runx2 by reducing the recruitment of Runx2 to the promoter region of its target genes. In vivo analysis of BMP2-induced ectopic bone formation revealed that the knockdown of Lmx1b promoted osteogenic differentiation and bone regeneration. Our data demonstrate that Lmx1b negatively regulates osteoblast differentiation and function through regulation of Runx2 and provides a molecular basis for therapeutic targets for bone diseases. New optical indicators based on periodic dielectric-metal structures were designed for electric field visualization. Activating transcription factor 3 (ATF3) has been identified as a negative regulator of osteoblast differentiation in in vitro study. However, it was not associated with osteoblast differentiation in in vivo study. To provide an understanding of the discrepancy between the in vivo and in vitro findings regarding the function of ATF3 in osteoblasts, we investigated the unidentified roles of ATF3 in osteoblast biology. ATF3 enhanced osteoprotegerin (OPG) production, not only in osteoblast precursor cells, but also during osteoblast differentiation and osteoblastic adipocyte differentiation. In addition, ATF3 increased nodule formation in immature osteoblasts and decreased osteoblast-dependent osteoclast formation, as well as the transdifferentiation of osteoblasts to adipocytes. However, all these effects were reversed by the OPG neutralizing antibody. Taken together, these results suggest that ATF3 contributes to bone homeostasis by regulating the differentiation of various cell types in the bone microenvironment, including osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and adipocytes via inducing OPG production. Purpose: Several observational studies have presented conflicting results on the association between the use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or histamine H2 receptor antagonist (H2RA) and the risk of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine this association. Methods: In July 2021, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Web of Science were searched for articles investigating the relationship between the two main acid suppressants and COVID-19. Studies showing the effect estimates as hazard ratio (HR) for severe outcomes or incidence of COVID-19 were evaluated using a random-effects model. Results: A total of 15 retrospective cohort studies with 18,109 COVID-19 cases were included in the current meta-analysis. PPI use was significantly associated with severe outcomes of COVID-19 (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.53; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.20–1.95) but not with the incidence of COVID-19, whereas H2RA use was significantly associated with decreased incidence (HR = 0.86, 95% CI: 0.76–0.97). For subgroup analyses of PPIs, increased severe outcomes of COVID-19 were observed in < 60 years, active use, in-hospital use, and Asians. For subgroup analyses of H2RAs, decreased severe outcomes of COVID-19 were observed in > 60 years, while in-hospital use and use in Asia were associated with higher disease severity. Conclusions: Close observation can be considered for COVID-19 patients who use PPIs to prevent severe outcomes. Photochromic materials have attracted considerable interest because of their ability to undergo reversible color switching. We report highly conductive and flexible spiropyran-embedded cellulose films with multiple optical and electrical functionalities, showing negative photo- and thermochromism. Combining silver nanowires and conductive polymer with cellulose/spiropyran films achieves a very low sheet resistance of 6.7 ohm/sq. The optimized films show outstanding mechanical stability with negligible electrical loss (resistance change < 2%) after 1000 bending cycles. The photo- and thermal-responsive conductive cellulose/spiropyran films can be used to directly visualize information and as flexible heating devices, pressure-responsive sensors, and colorimetric thermometers with high device performance. We demonstrate highly conductive, flexible, transparent, and reversibly color-switchable films based on a spiropyran-incorporated cellulose acetate biopolymer.
