Summary: Signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) estimation is crucial for spectrum management and data transmission. However, the existing classical methods in satellite‐to‐ground (SG) communication links, particularly for broadband transmission and under ultra‐low SNR conditions, often encounter substantial estimation errors. In this paper, a novel SNR estimation method based on time‐domain channel impulse response (CIR) reconstruction is proposed. Least square (LS) algorithm in frequency domain and inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) with a rectangular window are employed to reconstructed CIR. The noise energy is calculated by computing the average energy outside the window. The signal power is obtained by subtracting the noise energy from the total energy inside the window. In addition, a numerical simulation with a signal bandwidth of 400 MHz is performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in real SG communication scenarios. The simulation results show that compared with existing classical methods, even under ultra‐low SNR conditions, the proposed algorithm exhibits more accurate estimation ability and stronger resistance to frequency offset interference in nonterrestrial network (NTN) channels. Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a catastrophic accidence with little effective treatment, and inflammation played an important role in that. Previous studies showed photobiomodulation (PBM) could effectively downregulate the process of inflammation with modification of macrophage polarization after SCI; however, the potential mechanism behind that is still unclear. In the presented study, we aimed to investigate the effect of PBM on the expression level of versican, a matrix molecular believed to be associated with inflammation, and tried to find the mechanism on how that could regulate the inflammation process. Using immunofluorescence technique and western blot, we found the expression level of versican is increased after injury and markedly downregulated by irradiation treatment. Using virus intrathecal injection, we found the knock-down of versican could produce the effect similar to that of PBM and might have an effect on inflammation and macrophage polarization after SCI. To further verify the deduction, we peptide the supernatant of astrocytes to induce M0, M1, and M2 macrophages. We found that the versican produced by astrocytes might have a role on the promotion of M2 macrophages to inflammatory polarization. Finally, we investigated the potential pathway in the regulation of M2 polarization with the induction of versican. This study tried to give an interpretation on the mechanism of inflammation inhibition for PBM in the perspective of matrix regulation. PURPOSE We undertook a study to investigate the relationship between duration of medication use and prevalence of impaired awareness of hypoglycemia (IAH) among patients with insulin-treated or sulfonylurea-treated type 2 diabetes in Taiwan. METHODS A total of 898 patients (41.0% insulin users, 65.1% sulfonylurea users; mean [SD] age = 59.9 [12.3] years, 50.7% female) were enrolled in pharmacies, clinics, and health bureaus of Tainan City, Taiwan. Presence of IAH was determined with Chinese versions of the Gold questionnaire (Gold-TW) and Clarke questionnaire (Clarke-TW). Sociodemographics, disease and treatment histories, diabetes-related medical care, and health status were collected. We used multiple logistic regression models to assess the relationship between duration of medication use and IAH. RESULTS Overall IAH prevalence was 41.0% (Gold-TW) and 28.2% (Clarke-TW) among insulin users, and 65.3% (Gold-TW) and 51.3% (Clarke-TW) among sulfonylurea users. Prevalence increased with the duration of sulfonylurea use, whereas it decreased with the duration of insulin use. After controlling for potential confounders, 5 or more years of sulfonylurea use was significantly associated with 3.50-fold (95% CI, 2.39-5.13) and 3.06-fold (95% CI, 2.11-4.44) increases in the odds of IAH based on the Gold-TW and Clarke-TW criteria, respectively. On the other hand, regular blood glucose testing and retinal examinations were associated with reduced odds in both insulin users and sulfonylurea users. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of IAH was high among patients using sulfonylureas long term, but the odds of this complication were attenuated for those who received regular diabetes-related medical care. Our study suggests that long-term sulfonylurea use and irregular follow-up increase risk for IAH. Further prospective studies are needed to confirm the observed associations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Active artificial bone substitutes are crucial in bone repair and reconstruction. Calcium phosphate bone cement (CPC) is known for its biocompatibility, degradability, and ability to fill various shaped bone defects. However, its low osteoinductive capacity limits bone regeneration applications. Effectively integrating osteoinductive magnesium ions with CPC remains a challenge. Herein, we developed magnesium malate-modified CPC (MCPC). Incorporating 5% magnesium malate significantly enhances the compressive strength of CPC to (6.18 ± 0.49) MPa, reduces setting time and improves disintegration resistance. In vitro, MCPC steadily releases magnesium ions, promoting the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells without causing significant apoptosis, proving its biocompatibility. Molecularly, magnesium malate prompts macrophages to release prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and synergistically stimulates dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons to synthesize and release calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). The CGRP released by DRG neurons enhances the expression of the key osteogenic transcription factor Runt-related transcription factor-2 (RUNX2) in MC3T3-E1 cells, promoting osteogenesis. In vivo experiments using minipig vertebral bone defect model showed MCPC significantly increases the bone volume fraction, bone density, new bone formation, and proportion of mature bone in the defect area compared to CPC. Additionally, MCPC group exhibited significantly higher levels of osteogenesis and angiogenesis markers compared to CPC group, with no inflammation or necrosis observed in the hearts, livers, or kidneys, indicating its good biocompatibility. In conclusion, MCPC participates in the repair of bone defects in the complex post-fracture microenvironment through interactions among macrophages, DRG neurons, and osteoblasts. Stretchable thermoelectric thin films have attracted considerable attention due to their prospective applications in wearable electronics. Nevertheless, targeted resolutions are required for persistent challenges such as the increased resistance and diminished electrical conductivity under strain. The present study focuses on the development of high-performance thermoelectric nanocomposites via the blending of thienyl-phenylene-thienylene-phenylene-thienyl (TPT) nonacyclic fused ring-based conjugated polymers with single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). To disperse the CNTs, three TPT-based ladder-type random conjugated copolymers featuring distinct acceptor units are investigated, namely (i) thieno[3,4-c]pyrrole-4,6(5H)-dione (TPD), (ii) diphenylquinoxaline (QX), and (iii) thieno[3,4-b]thiophene (TT). Notably, the highly planar backbone structure of TPT-TT efficiently wraps around the surfaces of the CNTs, thus facilitating their uniform dispersion within the nanocomposite film. Consequently, the TPT-TT/CNT nanocomposite exhibits superior thermoelectric properties, including a power factor (PF) of up to 678.8 mW m1 K2. In addition, stretchable thermoelectric thin films are fabricated on a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) substrate by incorporating various amounts of the styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS) elastomer into the TPT-TT/CNT nanocomposite. The ternary TPT-TT/CNT/SEBS25 (containing 25 wt% SEBS) nanocomposite film maintains a PF of 372.79 mW m1 K2 (73.2% of its initial value) at 50% strain. The present study introduces a straightforward approach for fabricating stretchable thermoelectric thin films with commendable thermoelectric performance under strains of up to 50% by blending the high-performance ladder-type conjugated-polymer/CNT nanocomposite with SEBS. During development, neurons achieve a stereotyped neuron typespecific morphology, which relies on dynamic support by microtubules (MTs). An important player is the augmin complex (hereafter augmin), which binds to existing MT filaments and recruits the γ-tubulin ring complex (γ-TuRC), to form branched MTs. In cultured neurons, augmin is important for neurite formation. However, little is known about the role of augmin during neurite formation in vivo. Here, we have revisited the role of mammalian augmin in culture and then turned towards the class four Drosophila dendritic arborization (c4da) neurons. We show that MT density is maintained through augmin in cooperation with the γ-TuRC in vivo. Mutant c4da neurons show a reduction of newly emerging higher-order dendritic branches and in turn also a reduced number of their characteristic space-filling higher-order branchlets. Taken together, our data reveal a cooperative function for augmin with the γ-TuRC in forming enough MTs needed for the appropriate differentiation of morphologically complex dendrites in vivo. The comprehensive management of light polarization states has significantly advanced various fields into a new era. With the advent of photonic integration, there has been a persistent desire to replace the bulky optical components with compact chip‐scale circuits. Nonetheless, the complete integration of polarization‐dependent systems has not yet been accomplished due to the absence of a mature polarization management scheme that possesses a tiny form factor and high foundry process compatibility meanwhile maintaining low operation complexity. Here, to overcome these limitations a novel concept called polarization phase mapping, which encodes the information between the light polarization in one waveguide and the relative light phase shift in another two waveguides, is proposed. With this bi‐directional mapping approach, the fundamental basis of polarization management has shifted from polarization adjustment to phase regulation. All essential polarization‐related functions including synthesizing, stabilizing, measuring, rotating, splitting, and mixing are demonstrated with the standard process in foundries. The size of the polarization rotating unit is pushed down to a few light wavelengths while keeping a competitive performance. Moreover, the proposed concept can be readily applied to other integrated photonics platforms. It is expected to unlock new opportunities for complex polarization‐related applications. Background: Stroke is a leading cause of lifelong disability worldwide, partially driven by a reduced ability to use the upper limb in daily life causing increased dependence on caregivers. However, post-stroke functional impairments have only been investigated using limited clinical scores, during short-term longitudinal studies in relatively small patient cohorts. With the addition of technologybased assessments, we propose to complement clinical assessments with more sensitive and objective measures that could more holistically inform on upper limb impairment recovery after stroke, its impact on upper limb use in daily life, and on overall quality of life. This paper describes a pragmatic, longitudinal, observational study protocol aiming to gather a uniquely rich multimodal database to comprehensively describe the time course of upper limb recovery in a representative cohort of 400 Asian adults after stroke. Particularly, we will characterize the longitudinal relationship between upper limb recovery, common post-stroke impairments, functional independence and quality of life. Methods: Participants with stroke will be tested at up to eight time points, from within a month to 3  years post-stroke, to capture the influence of transitioning from hospital to community settings. We will perform a battery of established clinical assessments to describe the factors most likely to influence upper limb recovery. Further, we will gather digital health biomarkers from robotic or wearable sensing technology-assisted assessments to sensitively characterize motor and somatosensory impairments and upper limb use in daily life. We will also use both quantitative and qualitative measures to understand health-related quality of life. Lastly, we will describe neurophysiological motor status using transcranial magnetic stimulation. Statistics: Descriptive analyses will be first performed to understand post-stroke upper limb impairments and recovery at various time points. The relationships between digital biomarkers and various domains will be explored to inform key aspects of upper limb recovery and its dynamics using correlation matrices. Multiple statistical models will be constructed to characterize the time course of upper limb recovery post-stroke. Subgroups of stroke survivors exhibiting distinct recovery profiles will be identified. Conclusion: This is the first study complementing clinical assessments with technology-assisted digital biomarkers to investigate upper limb sensorimotor recovery in Asian stroke survivors. Overall, this study will yield a multimodal data set that longitudinally characterizes post-stroke upper limb recovery in functional impairments, daily-life upper limb use, and health-related quality of life in a large cohort of Asian stroke survivors. This data set generates valuable information on post-stroke upper limb recovery and potentially allows researchers to identify different recovery profiles of subgroups of Asian stroke survivors. This enables the comparisons between the characteristics and recovery profiles of stroke survivors in different regions. Thus, this study lays out the basis to identify early predictors for upper limb recovery, inform clinical decision-making in Asian stroke survivors and establish tailored therapy programs. Background: Many studies have recently highlighted the role of photobiomodulation (PBM) in neuropathic pain (NP) relief after spinal cord injury (SCI), suggesting that it may be an effective way to relieve NP after SCI. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to determine the potential mechanisms of PBM in NP relief after SCI. Methods: We performed systematic observations and investigated the mechanism of PBM intervention in NP in rats after SCI. Using transcriptome sequencing, we screened CXCL10 as a possible target molecule for PBM intervention and validated the results in rat tissues using reverse transcription‐polymerase chain reaction and western blotting. Using immunofluorescence co‐labeling, astrocytes and microglia were identified as the cells responsible for CXCL10 expression. The involvement of the NF‐κB pathway in CXCL10 expression was verified using inhibitor pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC) and agonist phorbol‐12‐myristate‐13‐acetate (PMA), which were further validated by an in vivo injection experiment. Results: Here, we demonstrated that PBM therapy led to an improvement in NP relative behaviors post‐SCI, inhibited the activation of microglia and astrocytes, and decreased the expression level of CXCL10 in glial cells, which was accompanied by mediation of the NF‐κB signaling pathway. Photobiomodulation inhibit the activation of the NF‐κB pathway and reduce downstream CXCL10 expression. The NF‐κB pathway inhibitor PDTC had the same effect as PBM on improving pain in animals with SCI, and the NF‐κB pathway promoter PMA could reverse the beneficial effect of PBM. Conclusions: Our results provide new insights into the mechanisms by which PBM alleviates NP after SCI. We demonstrated that PBM significantly inhibited the activation of microglia and astrocytes and decreased the expression level of CXCL10. These effects appear to be related to the NF‐κB signaling pathway. Taken together, our study provides evidence that PBM could be a potentially effective therapy for NP after SCI, CXCL10 and NF‐kB signaling pathways might be critical factors in pain relief mediated by PBM after SCI. The aggregation of perylene diimide (PDI) and its derivatives strongly depends on the molecular structure and therefore has a great impact on the excited states. By regulating the molecular stacking such as monomer, dimer, J- and/or H-aggregate, the formation of different excited states is adjustable and controllable. In this study, we have synthesized two kinds of PDI derivatives: undecane-substituted PDI (PDI-1) and diisopropylphenyl-substituted PDI (PDI-2), and the films are fabricated with spin-coating method. By employing photoluminescence, time-resolved photoluminescence, and transient absorption spectroscopy, the excited-state dynamics of two PDI amorphous films have been investigated systematically. The result reveals that both films form excimers after photoexcitation mainly due to the stronger electronic coupling among molecule aggregate in the amorphous film. It should be noted that the excited state dynamics in PDI-2 shows a singlet fission like process, which is evidenced by the appearance of triplet state absorption. This study provides the dynamics of excited state in amorphous PDI films, and paves the way for better understanding and adjusting the excited state of amorphous PDI films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on using latent class analysis to explore the relationship between symptom profiles and endotypes in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), revealing distinct clusters characterized by different combinations of symptoms and endotypic traits.

Rationale: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a heterogeneous syndrome with various endotypic traits and symptoms. A link among symptoms, endotypes, and disease prognosis has been proposed but remains unsupported by empirical data. Objectives: To link symptom profiles and endotypes by clustering endotypic traits estimated using polysomnographic signals. Methods: We recruited 509 patients with moderate to severe OSA from a single sleep center. Polysomnographic data were collected between May 2020 and January 2022. Endotypic traits, namely arousal threshold, upper airway collapsibility, loop gain, and upper airway muscle compensation, were retrieved using polysomnographic signals during non--rapid eye movement periods. We used latent class analysis to group participants into endotype clusters. Demographic and polysomnographic parameter differences were compared between clusters, and associations between endotype clusters and symptom profiles were examined using logistic regression analyses. Results: Three endotype clusters were identified, characterized by high collapsibility/loop gain, low arousal threshold, and low compensation, respectively. Patients in each cluster exhibited similar demographic characteristics, but those in the high collapsibility/loop gain cluster had the highest proportion of obesity and severe oxygen desaturation observed in polysomnographic studies. The low compensation cluster was characterized by fewer sleepy symptoms and exhibited a lower rate of diabetes mellitus. Compared with the excessively sleepy group, disturbed sleep symptoms were associated with the low arousal threshold cluster (odds ratio, 1.89; 95% confidence interval, 1.16-3.10). Excessively sleepy symptoms were associated with the high collapsibility/loop gain cluster (odds ratio, 2.16; 95% confidence interval, 1.39-3.37) compared with the minimally symptomatic group. Conclusions: Three pathological endotype clusters were identified among patients with moderate to severe OSA, each exhibiting distinct polysomnographic characteristics and clinical symptom profiles. Introduction: Patients with depressive disorder demonstrate rest–activity rhythm disturbances and cognitive function impairment. This study examined the association of individual rest–activity rhythm changes over time with mood symptoms and attention. Methods: We recruited 15 adult outpatients with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder from a single medical center and observed them for 12  months. Weekly rest–activity parameters, including rhythm characteristics generated from nonparametric circadian rhythm analysis, were retrieved from actigraphy data. Attention was evaluated weekly with a smartphone-based psychomotor vigilance test upon awakening. Depressive symptom severity was evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) fortnightly. The association of rest–activity parameters with BDI score and attention was examined using generalized linear mixed regression. A fixed-effects analysis was used to examine the association between rest–activity parameters and depressive episodes. Results: An advanced bedtime and most active continuous 10  h starting time were associated with depressive symptom severity but also associated with higher vigilance test performance. A longer sleep duration, mainly due to an earlier bedtime, was associated with depressive symptom severity. Compared to remission, sleep duration was 27.8  min longer during depressive episodes, and bed time was 24  min earlier. A shorter sleep duration and increased activity during sleep were associated with poorer attention. Discussion: Rest–activity rhythms change with mood symptoms among patients with depressive disorder. The circadian rhythms of rest–activity among patients with depressive disorder should be distinguished during various mood states in future studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Osteosarcoma (OS), the primary malignant bone tumor, has a low survival rate for recurrent patients. Latest reports indicated that cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) were the main component of tumor microenvironment, and would generate a variable role in the progression of tumors. However, the role of CAFs is still few known in osteosarcoma. Methods: The processed RNA-seq data and the corresponding clinical and molecular information were retrieved from the Cancer Genome Atlas Program (TCGA) database and processed data of tumor tissue was obtained from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Xcell method was used in data processing, and Gene set variation analysis (GSVA) was used to calculates enrichment scores. Nomogram was constructed to evaluate prognostic power of the predictive model. And the construction of risk scores and assessment of prognostic predictive were based on the LASSO model. Results: This study classified Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) cohort into high and low CAFs infiltrate phenotype with different CAFs infiltration enrichment scores. Then TOP 9 genes were screened as prognostic signatures among 2,488 differentially expressed genes between the two groups. Key prognostic molecules were CGREF1, CORT and RHBDL2 and the risk score formula is: Risk-score = CGREF1*0.004 + CORT*0.004 + RHBDL2*0.002. The signatures were validated to be independent prognostic factors to predict tumor prognosis with single-factor COX and multi-factor COX regression analyses and Norton chart. The risk score expression of risk score model genes could predict the drug resistance, and significant differences could be found between the high and low scoring groups for 17-AAG, AZD6244, PD-0325901 and Sorafenib. The high-order modulation format has the advantages of high spectral efficiency and large system capacity. However, the traditional frequency offset estimation and compensation algorithms, such as fast Fourier transform-based frequency offset estimation (FFT-FOE) that relies on a large number of complex FFT operations and differential frequency offset estimation (Diff-FOE) that relies on finite phase difference between adjacent symbols, are difficult to meet the frequency offset estimation requirements for any high-order modulation format. In this work, a novel FOE scheme using QPSK training symbols aided feedback structure is proposed. The performance of the proposed FOE scheme is evaluated in a polarization multiplexing QPSK-aided 32/64-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) simulation platforms with a symbol rate of 28 GBaud. The results show that has the technical advantages of low complexity, suitable for arbitrarily high-order modulation, tolerance for laser phase noise and wide tracking frequency offset range. Mitochondrial transplantation is a promising treatment for spinal cord injury (SCI), but it has the disadvantage of low efficiency of mitochondrial transfer to targeted cells. Here, we demonstrated that Photobiomodulation (PBM) could promote the transfer process, thus augmenting the therapeutic effect of mitochondrial transplantation. In vivo experiments, motor function recovery, tissue repair, and neuronal apoptosis were evaluated in different treatment groups. Under the premise of mitochondrial transplantation, the expression of Connex36 (Cx36), the trend of mitochondria transferred to neurons, and its downstream effects, such as ATP production and antioxidant capacity, were evaluated after PBM intervention. In in vitro experiments, dorsal root ganglia (DRG) were cotreated with PBM and 18β‐GA (a Cx36 inhibitor). In vivo experiments showed that PBM combined with mitochondrial transplantation could increase ATP production and reduce oxidative stress and neuronal apoptosis levels, thereby promoting tissue repair and motor function recovery. In vitro experiments further verified that Cx36 mediated the transfer of mitochondria into neurons. PBM could facilitate this progress via Cx36 both in vivo and in vitro. Functional characterization of pseudouridine (Ψ) in mammalian mRNA has been hampered by the lack of a quantitative method that maps Ψ in the whole transcriptome. We report bisulfite-induced deletion sequencing (BID-seq), which uses a bisulfite-mediated reaction to convert pseudouridine stoichiometrically into deletion upon reverse transcription without cytosine deamination. BID-seq enables detection of abundant Ψ sites with stoichiometry information in several human cell lines and 12 different mouse tissues using 10–20 ng input RNA. We uncover consensus sequences for Ψ in mammalian mRNA and assign different 'writer' proteins to individual Ψ deposition. Our results reveal a transcript stabilization role of Ψ sites installed by TRUB1 in human cancer cells. We also detect the presence of Ψ within stop codons of mammalian mRNA and confirm the role of Ψ in promoting stop codon readthrough in vivo. BID-seq will enable future investigations of the roles of Ψ in diverse biological processes. Pseudouridine sites in mRNA are detected at base resolution and functionally investigated. Compared with off-line digital signal processing (DSP) verification, achieving the expected performance and hardware efficiency in application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) is more critical for DSP to reduce power consumption and cost. The performance of traditional frequency offset compensation algorithms based on feedforward structure is strongly dependent on the accuracy of frequency offset estimation. Therefore, frequency offset calculation and loop filtering implemented in ASIC or field programmable gate array (FPGA) usually choose high word-width fixed-point or floating-point operations, which increase the consumption of logical resources and reduce the clock frequency that hardware logic can achieve. This work proposes a frequency offset compensation scheme based on polar coordinate processing and feedback structure, and a pre-decision-based angle differential estimator is used to estimate the residual frequency offset. In the proposed feedback structure, the frequency offset estimator is realized by a simple accumulator, and the input of the accumulator is the residual frequency offset or its scaling, which will reduce the requirement for the accuracy of the residual frequency offset estimator. The offline verification results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is close to that of the traditional algorithm, but the proposed algorithm has lower logic resource consumption and higher clock frequency in hardware implementation based on FPGA. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated in real-time through 10-Gbps data rate polarization-multiplexed quadrature phase shift keying modulation after 20-km standard single-mode fiber transmission. Background: Secondary spinal cord injury (SCI) often causes the aggravation of inflammatory reaction and nerve injury, which affects the recovery of motor function. Bone-marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) were recruited to the injured area after SCI, and the M1 polarization is the key process for inducing inflammatory response and neuronal apoptosis. We previously showed that photobiomodulation (PBM) can inhibit the polarization of M1 phenotype of BMDMs and reduce inflammation, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. The purpose of this study is to explore the potential target and mechanism of PBM in treating SCI. Methods: Transcriptome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis showed that long noncoding RNA taurine upregulated gene 1 (lncRNA TUG1) was a potential target of PBM. The expression and specific mechanism of lncRNA TUG1 were detected by qPCR, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, western blotting, fluorescence in situ hybridization, and luciferase assay. The Basso mouse scale (BMS) and gait analysis were used to evaluate the recovery of motor function in mice. Results: Results showed that lncRNA TUG1 may be a potential target of PBM, regulating the polarization of BMDMs, inflammatory response, and the axial growth of DRG. Mechanistically, TUG1 competed with TLR3 for binding to miR-1192 and attenuated the inhibitory effect of miR-1192 on TLR3. This effect protected TLR3 from degradation, enabling the high expression of TLR3, which promoted the activation of downstream NF-κB signal and the release of inflammatory cytokines. In vivo, PBM treatment could reduce the expression of TUG1, TLR3, and inflammatory cytokines and promoted nerve survival and motor function recovery in SCI mice. Conclusions: Our study clarified that the lncRNA TUG1/miR-1192/TLR3 axis is an important pathway for PBM to inhibit M1 macrophage polarization and inflammation, which provides theoretical support for its clinical application in patients with SCI. Endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) is involved in the pathological process of vascular dementia (VD). GJ-4 is extracted from Gardenia jasminoides J. Ellis and has been reported to have protective roles in ischemia-related brain damage. However, the role of GJ-4 in ERS has not been elucidated. We established a VD rat model through bilateral common carotid arteries occlusion (2-VO). The rats were intragastrically administrated with GJ-4 (10, 25, and 50 mg/kg) and nimodipine (10 mg/kg). Data from a Morris water maze test showed that GJ-4 could significantly alleviate learning and memory deficits in VD rats. Nissl and cleaved caspase-3 staining revealed that GJ-4 can inhibit apoptosis and thus exert a protective role in the brain of 2-VO rats. Western blot results suggested that GJ-4 significantly reduced ERS-related protein expression and inhibited apoptosis through suppression of the PERK/eIF2 α /ATF4/CHOP signaling pathway. For in vitro studies, the oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) SH-SY5Y model was employed. Western blot and Hoechst 33342/PI double staining were utilized to explore the effects of crocetin, the main active metabolite of GJ-4. Like GJ-4 in vivo, crocetin in vitro also decreased ERS-related protein expression and inhibited the activation of the PERK/eIF2 α /ATF4/CHOP signaling pathway. Thus, crocetin exerted similar protective roles on OGD challenged SH-SY5Y cells in vitro. In summary, GJ-4 and crocetin reduce the ERS in the brain of VD rats and SY5Y cells subjected to OGD and inhibit neuronal apoptosis through suppression of the PERK/eIF2 α /ATF4/CHOP pathway, suggesting that GJ-4 may be useful for the treatment of VD. Dual-specificity tyrosine phosphorylation–regulated kinase 1A (Dyrk1A) is a highly conserved protein kinase, playing a key role in the regulation of physiological brain functions and pathological processes. In Alzheimer's disease (AD), Dyrk1A promotes hyperphosphorylation of tau protein and abnormal aggregation of amyloid-β protein (Aβ). This study investigated the role of Dyrk1A in regulating neuroinflammation, another critical factor that contributes to AD. In the present study, we used an immortalized murine BV2 microglia cell line induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to study neuroinflammation. The expression and activity of Dyrk1A kinase were both increased by inflammation. Dyrk1A inhibition using harmine or siRNA silencing significantly reduced the production of proinflammatory factors in LPS-stimulated BV2 cells. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and nitric oxide (NO), as well as the expression of the inflammatory proteins, cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2), and inducible nitric synthase (iNOS), were attenuated. In vivo, in ICR mice injected with LPS into the left lateral cerebral ventricle, harmine (20 mg/kg) administration decreased the expression of inflammatory proteins in the cortex and hippocampus of mice brain. In addition, immunohistochemical detection of ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba1) and Nissl staining showed that harmine significantly attenuated microglia activation and neuronal damage in the CA1 region of hippocampus. Further mechanistic studies indicated that Dyrk1A suppression may be related to inhibition of the TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway in LPS-induced neuroinflammation. Alkali-activated slag (AAS) is a promising cementing material for winter construction due to its continuous hydration at sub-zero temperature. In order to obtain a higher mechanical strength of AAS mortar in winter construction, the most efficient alkali activator should be selected. Potassium silicate and sodium silicate as alkaline activators of AAS mortar possess a high strength and hydration rate at ordinary temperature. Potassium silicate and sodium silicate as alkali activators showed different properties because of different alkali cations, so the effect of alkali cation on the performance of AAS mortar was studied at sub-zero temperature. The mechanical properties of potassium-silicate-activated AAS (K-AAS) mortar and sodium-silicate-activated AAS (N-AAS) mortar were thoroughly compared at the ambient temperatures of −10 °C, 0 °C, and 20 °C. The compressive and flexural strength of K-AAS mortar was increased by 130.4% and 72.3% at the age of 1 day and increased by 49% and 33.7% at the age of 28 days at the ambient temperature of −10 °C compared with N-AAS mortar. In order to reveal the mechanism behind the influence of different alkali cations on the mechanical properties of AAS mortar, the hydration heat, hydration products, and pore structures of AAS were characterized. The hydration heat exhibited that the rate of heat release and the cumulative heat release of K-AAS are higher than N-AAS, indicating the higher reaction degree of K-AAS. DTG/TG and ATR-FTIR spectra showed that K-AAS generated more gel product C(-A)-S-H compared with N-AAS at the same curing temperature. The MIP results exhibited that the porosity of K-AAS was lower than N-AAS. Finally, the mechanism explanation of the effect of alkali cation on the performance of AAS mortar was proposed. Workplace violence is recognized as a serious psychosocial work hazard in the workplace. Nurses face higher risks of workplace violence and poor mental health than other medical professionals. In addition to addressing personal factors, workplace violence should be understood and managed in the context of the organizational climate. In this article, the definition and types of workplace violence and a socio-ecological perspective on workplace violence are introduced. In addition, the prevalence and impact on mental health of workplace violence are described. Lastly, the concept of safety climate and its influence on mental health are proposed. We hope this article provides readers with a better understanding of workplace violence and a contextual perspective on this issue. In addition to understanding workplace violence and learning coping strategies and skills, hospital managers should promote a positive climate of safety to reduce the occurrence of workplace violence and the impact of workplace violence on nurses. From urban green space to pristine forest, Collembola is one of the most numerous and species-rich members of the soil fauna around the world. However, due to lack of taxonomic expertise and research, its diversity is poorly understood, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. Collembola biodiversity studies in Taiwan have not seen much progress since 1981, when Hsin Chi reviewed 26 species belonging to 20 genera and eight families. Additionally, reports of new records in Taiwan in the last 40 years are scattered amongst several publications and not easily accessible to most end-users. Thus, a concise summary of related research is urgently needed. In this study, we updated the checklist of Collembola in Taiwan, based on published papers as well as images recorded in 2020–2022. We concluded that 58 species of Collembola belonging to 31 genera and 12 families have been reported in Taiwan, including 13 newly-recorded species. This species richness marks a 123% increase from the 1981 review. The results have been made publicly available in the Catalog of Life in Taiwan database and the images recorded have been used to update species information in collembola.org. We also characterised morphological and genetic variations in the globular springtail species Papirioides jacobsoni Folsom, 1924 using DNA barcodes and highlighted potential research directions. Transition metal-catalyzed reactions of silacyclobutanes with a variety of π units have attracted much attention and become one of the most straightforward and efficient approaches to rapidly access structurally diverse organosilicon compounds. However, the reaction of silacyclobutanes with alkynes still suffers from some limitations: (1) internal alkynes remain challenging substrates; (2) expensive Pd- or Rh-based catalysts have been employed in all existing systems; (3) controlling chemodivergence has not yet been realized. Herein we realize Ni-catalyzed chemodivergent reactions of silacyclobutanes with alkynes. In comparison with the previous Pd or Rh catalytic systems, our Ni-catalytic system features: 1) complementary substrate scope; 2) ligand-controlled chemodivergence; 3) low cost. The ligand precisely dictates the pathway selectivity, leading to the divergent formation of (benzo)silacyclohexenes and allyl vinylsilanes. Moreover, we demonstrate that employment of a chiral phosphine ligand is capable of forming silicon-stereogenic allyl vinylsilanes in high yields and enantioselectivities. In addition, DFT calculation is performed to elucidate the origin of the switchable selectivities, which is mainly attributed to different ligand steric effects. Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a catastrophic disease with a complex pathogenesis that includes inflammation, oxidative stress, and glial scar formation. Macrophages are the main mediators of the inflammatory response and are distributed in the epicentre of the SCI. Macrophages have neurotoxic and neuroprotective phenotypes (also known as classically and alternatively activated macrophages or M1 and M2 macrophages) that are associated with pro- or anti- inflammatory gene expression. Our previous study demonstrated that photobiomodulation (PBM) alters the polarization state of macrophages in the SCI region towards the M2 phenotype and promotes the recovery of motor function in rats with SCI. However, the mechanism by which PBM promotes SCI repair remains largely undefined. This study is based on the replacement of conventional percutaneous irradiation with implantable biofibre optic in vivo irradiation. The aim was to further investigate the effects of PBM on SCI in mice under new irradiation patterns and its potential mechanisms of action. PBM was administered to male mice with clamped SCI for four consecutive weeks and significantly promoted the recovery of motor function in mice. Analysis of the macrophage phenotypes in the epicentre of the SCI in mice showed that PBM mainly inhibited the neurotoxic activation of macrophages in the SCI area and reduced the secretion of inflammatory factors such as IL-1α and IL-6; PBM had no effect on M2 macrophages. Immediately afterwards, we constructed in vitro models of the inflammatory polarization of macrophages and PBM intervention. We found that PBM attenuated the neurotoxicity of M1 macrophages on VSC 4.1 motor neurons and dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons. The effects of PBM on neurotoxic macrophages and the possible mechanisms of action were analysed using RNA sequencing (RNA-seq), which confirmed that the main role of PBM was to modulate the inflammatory response and immune system processes. Analysis of the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with the inflammatory response showed that PBM had the most significant regulatory effects on genes such as interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-6, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and had obvious inhibitory effects on inflammation-related Notch1 and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) pathway genes. RNA-seq analysis of the effect of PBM on gene expression in resting-state macrophages and M2 macrophages did not show significant differences (data not shown). In conclusion, PBM promoted better motor recovery after SCI in mice by inhibiting the neurotoxic polarization of macrophages and the release of inflammatory mediators by acting on the Notch1-HIF-1α/NF-κB Signalling Pathway. Background: Neurotoxic microglia and astrocytes begin to activate and participate in pathological processes after spinal cord injury (SCI), subsequently causing severe secondary damage and affecting tissue repair. We have previously reported that photobiomodulation (PBM) can promote functional recovery by reducing neuroinflammation after SCI, but little is known about the underlying mechanism. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether PBM ameliorates neuroinflammation by modulating the activation of microglia and astrocytes after SCI.Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups: a sham control group, an SCI + vehicle group and an SCI + PBM group. PBM was performed for two consecutive weeks after clip-compression SCI models were established. The activation of neurotoxic microglia and astrocytes, the level of tissue apoptosis, the number of motor neurons and the recovery of motor function were evaluated at different days post-injury (1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days post-injury, dpi). Lipocalin 2 (Lcn2) and Janus kinase-2 (JAK2)-signal transducer and activator of transcription-3 (STAT3) signaling were regarded as potential targets by which PBM affected neurotoxic microglia and astrocytes. In in vitro experiments, primary microglia and astrocytes were irradiated with PBM and cotreated with cucurbitacin I (a JAK2-STAT3 pathway inhibitor), an adenovirus (shRNA-Lcn2) and recombinant Lcn2 protein.Results: PBM promoted the recovery of motor function, inhibited the activation of neurotoxic microglia and astrocytes, alleviated neuroinflammation and tissue apoptosis, and increased the number of neurons retained after SCI. The upregulation of Lcn2 and the activation of the JAK2-STAT3 pathway after SCI were suppressed by PBM. In vitro experiments also showed that Lcn2 and JAK2-STAT3 were mutually promoted and that PBM interfered with this interaction, inhibiting the activation of microglia and astrocytes.Conclusion: Lcn2/JAK2-STAT3 crosstalk is involved in the activation of neurotoxic microglia and astrocytes after SCI, and this process can be suppressed by PBM. After spinal cord injury (SCI), reactive astrocytes can be classified into two distinctive phenotypes according to their different functions: neurotoxic (A1) astrocytes and neuroprotective (A2) astrocytes. Our previous studies proved that photobiomodulation (PBM) can promote motor function recovery and improve tissue repair after SCI, but little is known about the underlying mechanism. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether PBM contributes to repair after SCI by regulating the activation of astrocytes. Male rats subjected to clip-compression SCI were treated with PBM for two consecutive weeks, and the results showed that recovery of motor function was improved, the lesion cavity size was reduced, and the number of neurons retained was increased. We determined the time course of A1/A2 astrocyte activation after SCI by RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) and verified that PBM inhibited A1 astrocyte activation and promoted A2 astrocyte activation at 7 days postinjury (dpi) and 14 dpi. Subsequently, potential signaling pathways related to A1/A2 astrocyte activation were identified by GO function analysis and KEGG pathway analysis and then studied in animal experiments and preliminarily analyzed in cultured astrocytes. Next, we observed that the expression of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) was upregulated by PBM and that both factors contributed to the transformation of A1/A2 astrocytes in a dose-dependent manner. Finally, we found that PBM reduced the neurotoxicity of A1 astrocytes to dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons. Microglial activation-induced neuroinflammation is critical in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. Activated microglia are regulated mainly by innate pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) on their surface, of which macrophage receptor with collagenous structure (Marco) is a well-characterized scavenger receptor constitutively expressed on specific subsets of macrophages, including microglia. Increasing evidence has shown that Marco is involved in the pathogenesis of a range of inflammatory processes. However, research on the role of Marco in regulating neuroinflammation has reported conflicting results. In the present study, we examined the role Marco played in triggering neuroinflammation and its underlying mechanisms. The results demonstrated that silencing the Marco gene resulted in a significantly reduced neuroinflammatory response and vice versa. α-Syn stimulation in Marco overexpressing cells induced a pronounced inflammatory response, suggesting that Marco alone could trigger an inflammatory response. We also found that TLR2 significantly promoted Marco-mediated neuroinflammation, indicating TLR2 was an important co-receptor of Marco. Knocking down the TLR2 gene in microglia and mouse substantia nigra resulted in decreased expression of Marco. Subsequent mechanistic studies showed that deleting the SRCR domain of Marco resulted in disruption of the inflammatory response and the interaction between TLR2 and Marco. This suggested that TLR2 binds directly to the SRCR domain of Marco and regulates Marco-mediated neuroinflammation. In summary, this investigation revealed that TLR2 could potentiate Marco-mediated neuroinflammation by interacting with the SRCR domain of Marco, providing a new target for inhibiting neuroinflammation in neurodegenerative diseases. 7-Hydroxycoumarin is a privileged structure for anti-inflammatory drug development. In this study, several new 3-acetyl-7-hydroxycoumarin derivatives were designed, synthesized and tested as anti-inflammatory agents. Interestingly, Mannich bases and Betti bases were separately obtained under acidic or neutral conditions. The regioselectivity of aminomethylation was studied based on the atomic electron density distribution by analysing the Voronoi deformation density (VDD) atomic charges, which reasonably explained the experimental outcome. Detection of nitric oxide (NO) and tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) release revealed that Mannich bases displayed stronger anti-inflammatory activity than the corresponding Betti bases. This article presents the nursing experience in caring for a male Canadian tourist who suffered from lower extremity arterial occlusive disease, as known as leg stroke. The nursing care period was from 2018.01.25 to 2018.02.01. with the application of the Roy's Adaptation Model. Comprehensive information was obtained via observation, physical evaluation, direct nursing, interview, and medical record review. The main health issues identified were acute pain, altered peripheral tissue perfusion, and anxiety. The patient was encouraged to perform muscle relaxation techniques such as massage, to ease pain and improve tissue perfusion. To reduce the patient's anxiety level, solutions were done to overcome cultural and language barriers between the patient and his caregivers. With the increasing number of foreign patients, medical professionals deal with different languages and cultures. It is recommended that nurses should embrace cultural differences, provide individual care, customize multilingual educational handouts, and assist patients to download an application for health self-monitoring. 1,2-Bis-silyl alkenes have exciting synthetic potential for programmable sequential synthesis via manipulation of the two vicinal silyl groups. Transition metal-catalyzed bis-silylation of alkynes with disilanes is the most straightforward strategy to access such useful building blocks. However, this process has some limitations: (1) symmetric disilanes are frequently employed in most of the reactions to assemble two identical silyl groups, which makes chemoselective differentiation for stepwise downstream transformations difficult; (2) the main catalysts are low-valent platinum group transition metal complexes, which are expensive; and (3) internal alkynes remain challenging substrates with low inherent reactivity. Thus, the development of abundant metal-catalyzed bis-silylation of internal alkynes with unsymmetrical disilanes is of significance. Herein, we solve most of the aforementioned limitations in bis-silylation of unsaturated bonds by developing a strongly coordinating disilane reagent and a Ni(0) catalytic system. Importantly, we sufficiently realize the stepwise recognition of the two silyl groups, making this synthetic protocol of wide potential utility. Bis-silylated alkenes offer the advantage of two functional handles with distinguished reactivity for downstream functionalization. The development of the fifth generation mobile (5G) technique stimulates a higher bandwidth requirement for next generation passive optical network (PON) systems. It is a challenge to further double the data rate from 50 to 100 Gb/s/λ depending on intensity modulation direct detection due to stringent bandwidth constraints on optical and electrical components. Coherent detection technology is a promising candidate for the future 100 Gb/s/λ or higher PON systems. The parallel implementation of hardware-efficient adaptive equalization tailored to PON systems will accelerate the evolution of coherent PON systems. In view of the current situation that logic resources are abundant while hardened multipliers are few for commercial field programmable gate array (FPGA), the purpose of this work is to reduce the number of hardened multiplexers used for FPGA realized signal processing. The waveform distortion caused by chromatic dispersion (CD) and imperfect frequency response of transceiver is rough compensated by using frequency domain equalization, which alleviate the stringent filter length requirement for the following adaptive equalization. Three Coordinate Rotation Digital Computer-based vector rotators are introduced to realize polarization demultiplexing, where the state of polarization is tracing by using a simplified gradient descent algorithm. A non-butterfly equalizer with few taps for each polarization is designed to handle the residual (CD) and the frequency response difference due to external environment variations and manufacturing technology. Background: Discussing on the characteristics of participating smokers in various cessation services provided by the hospital and understanding the effectiveness of different service models as well as the factors correlated with cessation success, can enable medical and public health personnel to establish more efficient consultations and policies. Method: This study collected and categorized all smokers seeking to quit smoking in a medical center in the year 2017. According to the cessation service models, they were divided into four groups: (1) outpatient cessation treatment (outpatient cessation group), (2) outpatient cessation plus smoking cessation education (outpatient + education group), (3) hospital-sponsored smoking cessation activities (cessation activity group), (4) mobile workplace cessation treatment (workplace cessation group). We checked the smoking cessation results from the website of Liaison Office of Management of Smoking Cessation, Health Promotion Administration, Ministry of Health and Welfare, compared the success rates and service efficiency of various service models, and explored the characteristics of the smokers and factors correlated to cessation success. Results: The smoking cessation activity carried out by the hospital combined with cessation treatment and health education could attract the people who are older and/or less addicted. The cessation activity group serves smokers more efficiently and their success rate was not significantly different from that of outpatient cessation group. The study also found that fewer daily cigarette consumption, lower addition score, lower carbon monoxide expiratory concentration, taking smoking cessation drug champix and more than one outpatient visits were correlated with higher six-month success rate of smoking cessation. Conclusion: When the hospital provides smoking cessation services to the community and workplace, it helps more people take the first step to quit smoking. Physicians can take personal factors as a reference in the case management and drug choosing with as well as encourage follow-up visits, which will increase the success rate of smoking cessation.
