Background: Instances of attacks from large carnivores that lead to human injury or death are increasingly reported worldwide. Ensuring human safety when people and carnivores co-occur is central to minimizing human suffering but is also essential to support sustainable carnivore conservation. Various interventions are available intended to alter either the behavior of large carnivores or people, in order to reduce the likelihood of a risky encounter and an attack. Collated evidence on best practices is still lacking, and this protocol outlines a systematic review of evidence for intervention effectiveness to reduce the risk or severity of direct attacks on humans by large carnivores. Specifically, the review seeks to answer the question: How effective are evaluated interventions in reducing large carnivore attacks on people? Methods: The bibliographic databases Zoological Record, BIOSIS Citation Index, and Scopus will be searched using a predefined search string. Grey literature will be requested through professional networks, contacts with relevant organizations, and searching selected websites. All returned titles and abstracts will be manually screened using Rayyan.ai. For inclusion, studies should describe the Population, Intervention, Comparator, and Outcome (PICO) of the review research question and be written in English, Spanish, or Swedish. Review papers will be excluded. All records of data coding and extraction are documented in a purposely developed, and priorly piloted, data sheet. Critical appraisal of study validity will be done according to the Collaboration for Environmental Evidence Critical Appraisal Tool prototype version 0.3. Review outcomes will be synthesized in a narrative, and if possible, a quantitative synthesis. The narrative synthesis will describe in text the carnivore population (species, location), context (target object, intervention model), as well as the design and reported results of each study. The quantitative synthesis will include a summary statistic, preferably logarithmic risk ratio, calculated for each original study. A forest plot will be created to visualize study outcomes, as well as judgments of critical appraisal. Objectives. To determine the pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block's postoperative analgesic efficacy and safety compared to the suprainguinal fascia iliaca (SFI) block in patients undergoing primary hip arthroplasty using the same injectate volume. Material and Methods. Between January 2021 and March 2022, American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status (ASA-PS) classification I–III patients scheduled for hip arthroplasty were included in this study. After standard monitoring and subarachnoid anesthesia, an ultrasound-guided PENG or SFI block with 20 ml of 0.25% levobupivacaine was performed for postoperative analgesia. All patients were assessed with a numerical rating scale (NRS) at presurgery, upon arrival at the postanesthesia care unit (PACU), and in the postoperative period at 2, 4, 12, and 24 hours. The need for analgesic rescue and adverse effects was also assessed. Results. A total of 130 patients were included in the study (62 PENG block and 68 SFI block). Both blocks were equally effective in managing postoperative pain without any statistically significant differences except at 12 h (p = 0.023), where the deviation found was not clinically relevant. The median total morphine consumption was 0 mg [0–2] in the PENG block group and 0 mg [0–2] in the SFI block group. A more significant motor block was found in the first 6 hours in the SFI block group (p = 0.001). There was no significant difference in the ease of performing PENG (79%) or SFI (85%) blocks. No major complications were recorded in both groups, and patient satisfaction was high (83.9% for the PENG block group vs. 91.2% for the SFI block group). Discussion. Both blocks have been demonstrated to be effective for postoperative analgesia in hip arthroplasty and should be integrated as a multimodal analgesic strategy. The lesser degree of motor block recorded in the first hours with the PENG block makes it the most suitable option for early recovery. Both techniques were easy and safe to perform. Background Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is an unusual complication of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). The risk factors are not well understood but may include oversizing, calcification amount and location, left-ventricular chamber morphology, and valve-in-valve (ViV) procedures. Percutaneous treatment is challenging but is usually the preferred option. Case summary An 80-year-old woman with two previous surgical aortic valve replacements was admitted to our Cardiology Department for decompensated heart failure. New bioprosthesis degeneration (19 mm Mitroflow™, Sorin Group, Canada) was observed with severe intraprosthetic aortic regurgitation. After evaluation, the heart team chose to perform ViV TAVI. Because of the high risk of coronary obstruction, chimney stenting of both coronary arteries was performed. A 23 mm self-expandable Navitor™ valve (Abbott, IL, USA) was implanted, but the Mitroflow™ valve had to be cracked to minimize the persistent high gradient. During valve fracture, the non-compliant balloon broke and a small iatrogenic VSD appeared. However, the patient remained stable, so conservative management was selected. During follow-up, she developed severe haemolytic anaemia and heart failure; therefore, percutaneous closure of the iatrogenic VSD was performed twice, which was a difficult challenge. Discussion A viable alternative to redo surgery is ViV TAVI. Risks include higher rates of prosthesis–patient mismatch and coronary obstruction. Occasionally, bioprosthetic valve fracture is required, particularly in small bioprostheses, to achieve low gradients. Anecdotally, fracture has led to annular rupture and VSD. Most VSDs are small and without clinical or haemodynamic repercussions; however, in symptomatic cases, percutaneous closure is a viable alternative to surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although Agave angustifolia Haw is one of the most cultural and industrial promising species in Mexico, no extensive genomic resources were available. Herein, we explore the transcriptome data set of this species. Total RNA from stem, roots, young and mature leaves was purified and sequenced by NovaSeq6000 system. From the de novo assembly of A. angustifolia, a total of 358,170 transcripts with average length of 1117 bp, N50 of 858 bp, and GC mean content of 43.5% were obtained. About 48.7% of the transcripts had open reading frame (ORF). Hence, 63.4% and 42.7% of the ORFs were annotated using Blastp and Blastx against UniProtKB database, respectively, uncovering the presence of at least 29,273 genes in the A. angustifolia transcriptome. The six pairwise comparisons between plant tissues resulted in the identification of 123,181 differentially expressed transcripts (23,978 were upregulated and 79,203 were downregulated). Several carbohydrate metabolism pathways were significantly enriched from the comparisons between leaves and stems. Thus, genes regulated for the fructan, starch and sucrose biosynthesis were discussed. Furthermore, genes involved in cellulose synthesis were explored being the members of the cellulose synthase genes subfamily were highly expressed in young leaf, while the members of the cellulose synthase-like subfamily were preferentially expressed in mature leaf. Moreover, A. angustifolia transcriptome served for the identification of 30,766 SSR and 21,686 VNTR potential markers. Overall, the transcriptomic data generated in this study provide an invaluable resource to understand the biology of A. angustifolia, offering new insight to understand their physiology and adaptation. Overrepresentation of foreigners in prisons is a well-established fact in Spain. However, there is a lack of empirical studies exploring the causes of this overrepresentation. Based on focal concerns theory, this paper aims to explore one of the possible causes of this overrepresentation: sentencing disparities between Spanish and foreign citizens. For this purpose, two subsets of court records are used to study disparities in the odds of incarceration (n = 2310) and differences in the length of prison sentence (n = 1162). Due to alleged limitations of standard regression models to analyse disparities in sentencing when differences between groups are large, entropy re-weighting was used to achieve balance between group observations with regard to control variables. The analyses reveal, on the one hand that, even when controlling for relevant legal and other extra-legal factors, citizens from Africa have higher odds than Spanish citizens to be sentenced to prison. To establish pan-European consensus on tapering and discontinuing thrombopoietin receptor agonists (TPO-RAs) in patients with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), we applied a three-step Delphi technique consisting of a one-to-one interview round and two online survey rounds. Three healthcare professionals (HCPs) from Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom formed the Steering Committee (SC), which advised on study design, panelist selection, and survey development. A literature review also informed the development of the consensus statements. Likert scales were used to collect quantitative data on panelists' level of agreement. Twelve hematologists representing nine European countries assessed 121 statements spanning three categories: (1) patient selection; (2) tapering and discontinuation strategies; (3) post-discontinuation management. Consensus was reached on approximately half of the statements in each category (32.2%; 44.6%; 66%). Panelists agreed on patients' main selection criteria, patients' involvement in decision-making, tapering strategies, and follow-up criteria. Areas not reaching consensus were risk factors and predictors of successful discontinuation, monitoring intervals, and rates of successful discontinuation or relapse. This lack of consensus signals knowledge and practice gaps among European countries and suggests the need for the development of clinical practice guidelines that outline a pan-European, evidence-based approach to tapering and discontinuing TPO-RAs. In this paper, the term "applicability domain" refers to the range of chemical compounds for which the statistical quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) model can accurately predict their toxicity. This is a crucial concept in the development and practical use of these models. First, a multidisciplinary review is provided regarding the theory and practice of applicability domains in the context of toxicity problems using the classical QSAR model. Then, the advantages and improved performance of neural networks (NNs), which are the most promising machine learning algorithms, are reviewed. Within the domain of medicinal chemistry, nine different methods using NNs for toxicity prediction were compared utilizing 29 alternative artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. Similarly, seven NN-based toxicity prediction methodologies were compared to six other AI techniques within the realm of food safety, 11 NN-based methodologies were compared to 16 different AI approaches in the environmental sciences category and four specific NN-based toxicity prediction methodologies were compared to nine alternative AI techniques in the field of industrial hygiene. Within the reviewed approaches, given known toxic compound descriptors and behaviors, we observed a difficulty in being able to extrapolate and predict the effects with untested chemical compounds. Different methods can be used for unsupervised clustering, such as distance-based approaches and consensus-based decision methods. Additionally, the importance of model validation has been highlighted within a regulatory context according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) principles, to predict the toxicity of potential new drugs in medicinal chemistry, to determine the limits of detection for harmful substances in food to predict the toxicity limits of chemicals in the environment, and to predict the exposure limits to harmful substances in the workplace. Despite its importance, a thorough application of toxicity models is still restricted in the field of medicinal chemistry and is virtually overlooked in other scientific domains. Consequently, only a small proportion of the toxicity studies conducted in medicinal chemistry consider the applicability domain in their mathematical models, thereby limiting their predictive power to untested drugs. Conversely, the applicability of these models is crucial; however, this has not been sufficiently assessed in toxicity prediction or in other related areas such as food science, environmental science, and industrial hygiene. Thus, this review sheds light on the prevalent use of Neural Networks in toxicity prediction, thereby serving as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners across these multifaceted domains that could be extended to other fields in future research. The study of history through time cycles, particularly those related to war, has been the focus of several theories. The objective of this article is to explore the results achieved by researchers in this field. In order to achieve this aim, two cycles are used to illustrate the incidences of war and peace in the west and its sphere of influence since the nineteenth century. Furthermore, the article investigates the foreseeable position of the current Russian-Ukrainian conflict based on the expected development of these cycles. Specifically, we determine the place that the current conflict would occupy, up to a certain point. The study concludes with a prospective exercise that is based on the war cycles analyzed and it provides a scientific analysis of historical ones and their implications for future conflicts. Background Brugada phenocopies are a group of heterogeneous disorders that mimic Brugada syndrome (BrS) electrocardiogram (ECG) changes elicited by reversible clinical conditions. We report a novel case on flecainide toxicity causing an ECG signature of Brugada type 1 pattern in the paediatric age. Case summary A 13-year-old Caucasian boy with untreated attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder referred to the Pediatric Emergency Department (PED) after unknown antiarrhythmic drug overdose. He deliberately ingested 10 tablets from a labelled white box of a 100-mg single dose. The ECG showed a coved-type ST-segment elevation in right precordial leads and prolongation of PR segment with a QTc limit interval. Values of troponins gradually increased and echocardiogram was normal. The altered ECG pattern was explained by the stabilizing membrane effect of flecainide involving the inhibition of rapid Na+ channels. After offending drug removal, regression of ECG changes was observed and no cardiac events were documented during follow-up. Discussion Flecainide-induced Brugada type 1 ECG pattern may occur in patients with no evidence of genetic susceptibility receiving a toxic dosage of this drug. With increasing dose, its action on conduction pathways manifests as prolongation of PR interval and QT and QRS complex duration and may cause BrS mimicry. A detailed clinical history considering symptoms and ECG findings may support early-raised suspicion for flecainide ingestion. The therapeutic approach implies primary detoxification, prevention of potential triggers, and management of eventual cardiotoxicity events. Finally, risk stratification for BrS should be always measured according to the clinical scenario and surveillance considered in a timely manner. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and objective: Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is an immunomodulatory drug approved for the therapy of multiple sclerosis (MS). The identification of response biomarkers to DMF is a necessity in the clinical practice. With this aim, we studied the immunophenotypic and transcriptomic changes produced by DMF in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and its association with clinical response. Material and methods: PBMCs were obtained from 22 RRMS patients at baseline and 12 months of DMF treatment. Lymphocyte and monocyte subsets, and gene expression were assessed by flow cytometry and next-generation RNA sequencing, respectively. Clinical response was evaluated using the composite measure "no evidence of disease activity" NEDA-3 or "evidence of disease activity" EDA-3 at 2 years, classifying patients into responders (n=15) or nonresponders (n=7), respectively. Results: In the whole cohort, DMF produced a decrease in effector (TEM) and central (TCM) memory T cells in both the CD4+ and CD8+ compartments, followed by an increase in CD4+ naïve T cells. Responder patients presented a greater decrease in TEM lymphocytes. In addition, responder patients showed an increase in NK cells and were resistant to the decrease in the intermediate monocytes shown by non-responders. Responder patients also presented differences in 3 subpopulations (NK bright, NK dim and CD8 TCM) at baseline and 4 subpopulations (intermediate monocytes, regulatory T cells, CD4 TCM and CD4 TEMRA) at 12 months. DMF induced a mild transcriptional effect, with only 328 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) after 12 months of treatment. The overall effect was a downregulation of pro-inflammatory genes, chemokines, and activators of the NF-kB pathway. At baseline, no DEGs were found between responders and non-responders. During DMF treatment a differential transcriptomic response was observed, with responders presenting a higher number of DEGs (902 genes) compared to non-responders (189 genes). Conclusions: Responder patients to DMF exhibit differences in monocyte and lymphocyte subpopulations and a distinguishable transcriptomic response compared to non-responders that should be further studied for the validation of biomarkers of treatment response to DMF. This study aimed to analyse the relationship between the formative assessment (FA) of Physical Education teachers and the level of self-concept of primary school students. In this descriptive cross-sectional study of 122 schoolchildren, selfconcept was assessed using the Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale and the teacher's formative assessment practices through the teacher performance questionnaire associated with formative assessment practices whose scores were validated. The analysis of bivariate correlations showed that higher values in proactive FA correlated with lower values in physical self-concept and higher values in behavioural, intellectual, and social self-concept (p < 0.05, for all) and interactive FA with higher values in social self-concept (p < 0.05). The simple analysis of variance detected statistically significant differences in proactive and interactive FA (p < 0.05, for all) in favour of those who had a higher level of self-concept. In turn, the linear regression test indicated that higher values in retroactive FA are associated with higher values in social self-concept (p < 0.039) and, that higher values in proactive FA are associated with lower values in physical self-concept (p < 0.023). The phytohormone cytokinin is implicated in a range of growth, developmental, and defense processes. A growing body of evidence supports a crosstalk between cytokinin and nutrient signaling pathways, such as nitrate availability. Cytokinin signaling regulates sulfur-responsive gene expression, but the underlying molecular mechanisms and their impact on sulfur-containing metabolites have not been systematically explored. Using a combination of genetic and pharmacological tools, we investigated the interplay between cytokinin signaling and sulfur homeostasis. Exogenous cytokinin triggered sulfur starvation-like gene expression accompanied by a decrease in sulfate and glutathione content. This process was uncoupled from the activity of the major transcriptional regulator of sulfate starvation signaling SULFUR LIMITATION 1 and an important glutathione-degrading enzyme, γ-glutamyl cyclotransferase 2;1, expression of which was robustly up-regulated by cytokinin. Conversely, glutathione accumulation was observed in mutants lacking the cytokinin receptor ARABIDOPSIS HISTIDINE KINASE 3 and in cytokinin-deficient plants. Cytokinin-deficient plants displayed improved root growth upon exposure to glutathione-depleting chemicals which was attributed to a higher capacity to maintain glutathione levels. These results shed new light on the interplay between cytokinin signaling and sulfur homeostasis. Guselkumab is a monoclonal antibody that selectively blocks the p19 subunit of interleukin 23 and has been approved for the treatment of moderate to severe psoriasis and active psoriatic arthritis in adult patients due to its efficacy in different clinical trials. Therefore, itis important to know the performance of guselkumab in this setting of patients in clinical practice given that a high percentage of them are not represented in these clinical trials. Our objective was to evaluate the effectiveness and tolerability of guselkumab in clinical practice in the first patients with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis treated since the date of its approval for psoriasis in Spain, in joint dermatology‐rheumatology clinics. A multicenter retrospective data collection was carried out, in which 14 hospitals participated, including a total of 90 patients with psoriatic arthritis confirmed by a rheumatologist. Data collection was recorded at baseline and at weeks 12, 24, and 52 for both the articular and cutaneous domains. Ninety PsA patients started treatment with guselkumab and therefore were included in this study. The vast majority had already failed to at least to one biologic therapyprior guselkumab prescription. The median age was 55 years, 61% were female and 46% had a BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2. Sixty‐nine percent suffered from peripheral arthritis, and in 34% an axial involvement was also detected; dactylitis or enthesitis was present in 24% and 29% of patients, respectively. Guselkumab was effective in controlling both articular and skin manifestations of PsA patients. Absolute PASI significantly decreased from 10.5 to 4.8, 1.9 and 1.3 at weeks 12, 24, and 52, respectively. In 29 out of 61 (48%) of cases, DAPSA was moderate or high, and patients showed a significant reduction in DAPSA at 12, 24, and 52 weeks of treatment (mean DAPSA values at baseline and follow up were 29, 20, 16, and 14, respectively). Patients with DAPSA in low activity or in remission at the time of initiation of guselkumab maintained response at the end of the study period. No new safety concerns were detected. Seventy‐eight out of 90 patients (84.4%) persisted on treatment after 2 years follow‐up. Our experience suggests that guselkumab isan effective drug for PsA and PsO patients in clinical practice with good tolerability and no additional safety signals, making it a new therapeutic alternative for the treatment of PsA and PsO patients. At present, aquaculture is still subject to social debate. This paper analyzes its social acceptance compared to traditional fishing, mainly by applying the structural equations methodology. This technique has been widely used in recent times in social sciences but is minor in this field. We propose a model in which we break down its acceptance in two dimensions: Product and company. We also try to see if there are differences in the perception of men and women. To this end, we have carried out 803 personal surveys in several Spanish coastal provinces. Among the results, we can highlight the good level of acceptance of its products, positively influencing their companies' perception. We can recommend the development of synergies between the different agents involved to improve their acceptance. By gender, general acceptance is higher in men than in women; however, we have not detected significant differences in both groups' perceptions when analyzed using structural equations. Background: Allergy can start at early ages, with genetic and environmental factors contributing to its development. Aim: The study aimed to describe the pattern of sensitisation and allergy in children and adolescents of Spanish versus Moroccan ancestry but born in the same rural area of Spain. Methods: Participants were children and adolescents (3– 19 years) of Spanish or Moroccan descent, born in Blanca, Murcia (Spain). A detailed questionnaire was completed, and skin prick tests were performed to assess reactions to the most prevalent pollen allergens (O. europaea, P. pratense, S. kali, C. arizonica, P. acerifolia, A. vulgaris and P. judaica) plus molecular components Ole e 1 and Ole e 7. The association with ancestry was verified by studying participants' parents. Results: The study included 693 participants: 48% were aged 3– 9 years and 52%, 10– 19 years; 80% were of Spanish descent and 20% of Moroccan descent. Sensitisation to Olea europaea, Phleum pratense, Salsola kali and Cupressus arizonica were slightly higher in the Spanish group. The only significant differences were observed in sensitisation to Ole e 1 (p=0.02). Rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and rhinitis plus asthma were significantly higher in the Spanish group (p=0.03, p=0.02, p=0.007, respectively). The sensitisation pattern differed between Spanish and Moroccan parents, and between Moroccan parents and their children, but not between Spanish parents and their children. Conclusion: Both environment and ancestry may influence sensitisation and symptoms. Although the environment seems to have a stronger influence, other factors may contribute to the differences in prevalence and in the clinical entities in people of Spanish versus Moroccan descent. Simple Summary: Left ventricular dysfunction (LVD) induced by anthracycline-based cancer chemotherapy (ACC) is becoming an urgent healthcare concern. Myocardial fibrosis (MF) may contribute to LVD after ACC. We show that elevated circulating levels of procollagen type I C-terminal propeptide (PICP, biomarker of MF) are associated with early subclinical LVD and predict later development of cardiotoxicity in patients treated with ACC. In addition, an association between PICP and LVD in patients with ACC-induced heart failure is observed. These results provide novel insights into MF as a mechanism underlying LVD after ACC, with PICP emerging as a promising tool to monitor cardiotoxicity in patients treated with ACC. Anthracycline-based cancer chemotherapy (ACC) causes myocardial fibrosis, a lesion contributing to left ventricular dysfunction (LVD). We investigated whether the procollagen-derived type-I C-terminal-propeptide (PICP): (1) associates with subclinical LVD (sLVD) at 3-months after ACC (3m-post-ACC); (2) predicts cardiotoxicity 1-year after ACC (12m-post-ACC) in breast cancer patients (BC-patients); and (3) associates with LVD in ACC-induced heart failure patients (ACC-HF-patients). Echocardiography, serum PICP and biomarkers of cardiomyocyte damage were assessed in two independent cohorts of BC-patients: CUN (n = 87) at baseline, post-ACC, and 3m and 12m (n = 65)-post-ACC; and HULAFE (n = 70) at baseline, 3m and 12m-post-ACC. Thirty-seven ACC-HF-patients were also studied. Global longitudinal strain (GLS)-based sLVD (3m-post-ACC) and LV ejection fraction (LVEF)-based cardiotoxicity (12m-post-ACC) were defined according to guidelines. BC-patients: all biomarkers increased at 3m-post-ACC versus baseline. PICP was particularly increased in patients with sLVD (interaction-p < 0.001) and was associated with GLS (p < 0.001). PICP increase at 3m-post-ACC predicted cardiotoxicity at 12m-post-ACC (odds-ratio ≥ 2.95 per doubling PICP, p ≤ 0.025) in both BC-cohorts, adding prognostic value to the early assessment of GLS and LVEF. ACC-HF-patients: PICP was inversely associated with LVEF (p = 0.004). In ACC-treated BC-patients, an early increase in PICP is associated with early sLVD and predicts cardiotoxicity 1 year after ACC. Worldwide vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 has allowed the detection of hematologic autoimmune complications. Adverse events (AEs) of this nature had been previously observed in association with other vaccines. The underlying mechanisms are not totally understood, although mimicry between viral and self-antigens plays a relevant role. It is important to remark that, although the incidence of these AEs is extremely low, their evolution may lead to life-threatening scenarios if treatment is not readily initiated. Hematologic autoimmune AEs have been associated with both mRNA and adenoviral vector-based SARS-CoV-2 vaccines. The main reported entities are secondary immune thrombocytopenia, immune thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, autoimmune hemolytic anemia, Evans syndrome, and a newly described disorder, so-called vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT). The hallmark of VITT is the presence of anti-platelet factor 4 autoantibodies able to trigger platelet activation. Patients with VITT present with thrombocytopenia and may develop thrombosis in unusual locations such as cerebral beds. The management of hematologic autoimmune AEs does not differ significantly from that of these disorders in a non-vaccine context, thus addressing autoantibody production and bleeding/thromboembolic risk. Simple Summary: We investigated the influence of GWAS-identified variants for T2D in modulating prostate cancer (PCa) risk through a meta-analysis of our data with those from the UKBiobank and FinnGEn cohorts and four large European cohorts. We found that genetic variants within the FTO, HNF1B, and JAZF1 loci were associated with PCa risk. Our results also suggested, for the first time, a potentially interesting association of SNPs within NOTCH2 and RBMS1 genes that need to be further explored and validated. This study also shed some light onto the functional mechanisms behind the observed associations, and demonstrated that the HNF1Brs7501939 polymorphism correlated with lower levels of SULT1A1, an enzyme responsible for the sulfate conjugation of multiple endogenous and exogenous compounds. Furthermore, we found that SNPs within the HFN1B, NOTCH2, and RBMS1 genes impacted PCa risk through the modulation of mRNA gene expression levels of their respective genes. However, given the healthy nature of the subjects included in the cohort used for functional experiments, the link between the HNF1B locus and SULT1A1 should be considered still speculative and, therefore, requires further validation. In this study, we have evaluated whether 57 genome-wide association studies (GWAS)-identified common variants for type 2 diabetes (T2D) influence the risk of developing prostate cancer (PCa) in a population of 304 Caucasian PCa patients and 686 controls. The association of selected single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with the risk of PCa was validated through meta-analysis of our data with those from the UKBiobank and FinnGen cohorts, but also previously published genetic studies. We also evaluated whether T2D SNPs associated with PCa risk could influence host immune responses by analysing their correlation with absolute numbers of 91 blood-derived cell populations and circulating levels of 103 immunological proteins and 7 steroid hormones. We also investigated the correlation of the most interesting SNPs with cytokine levels after in vitro stimulation of whole blood, peripheral mononuclear cells (PBMCs), and monocyte-derived macrophages with LPS, PHA, Pam3Cys, and Staphylococcus Aureus. The meta-analysis of our data with those from six large cohorts confirmed that each copy of the FTOrs9939609A, HNF1Brs7501939T, HNF1Brs757210T, HNF1Brs4430796G, and JAZF1rs10486567A alleles significantly decreased risk of developing PCa (p = 3.70 × 10−5, p = 9.39 × 10−54, p = 5.04 × 10−54, p = 1.19 × 10−71, and p = 1.66 × 10−18, respectively). Although it was not statistically significant after correction for multiple testing, we also found that the NOTCH2rs10923931T and RBMS1rs7593730 SNPs associated with the risk of developing PCa (p = 8.49 × 10−4 and 0.004). Interestingly, we found that the protective effect attributed to the HFN1B locus could be mediated by the SULT1A1 protein (p = 0.00030), an arylsulfotransferase that catalyzes the sulfate conjugation of many hormones, neurotransmitters, drugs, and xenobiotic compounds. In addition to these results, eQTL analysis revealed that the HNF1Brs7501939, HNF1Brs757210, HNF1Brs4430796, NOTCH2rs10923931, and RBMS1rs7593730 SNPs influence the risk of PCa through the modulation of mRNA levels of their respective genes in whole blood and/or liver. These results confirm that functional TD2-related variants influence the risk of developing PCa, but also highlight the need of additional experiments to validate our functional results in a tumoral tissue context. This study aims to analyze three main variables of electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) – impact on bookings volume, main attributes of client satisfaction, and best strategy for responding to unfavorable opinions – in a traditional (TripAdvisor) and a collaborative (Airbnb) accommodation system. This is the first study to address these themes together in the same analysis area (New York City) and for both accommodation models simultaneously. A mixed analysis methodology was employed, combining quantitative analysis (a linear logarithmic model) with a qualitative analysis of comments (through Nvivo 12), completed by a series of online surveys. The results confirm that, in the three variables analyzed in the eWOM, there are strong similarities in the two accommodation systems, with basic characteristics common to both systems: the influence of online comments on the number of bookings, the characteristics of the accommodation and the room as the most important attribute in customer satisfaction, and the response of the accommodation, in the face of negative criticism, is what increases the possibility of booking by other customers. Haemosporidian parasites are common in birds but are seldom reported in seabirds. The absence of vectors or genetic resistance to infection have been proposed to explain this pattern. However, screening of blood parasites in many seabirds has been done only by visual inspection of blood smears, which can miss low-intensity infections, and molecular detection of blood parasites must be supported by detection in blood smears to confirm the presence of haemosporidians and avoid false positive cases. Here, we tested for the presence of blood parasites of the genera Plasmodium, Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon, combining inspection of blood smears and PCR-based detection methods in a highly philopatric colony of blue-footed boobies (Sula nebouxii) in the Tropical North Pacific. Our results indicate that adults in this colony are likely free of these blood parasites, probably due to unsuitable conditions for insect vectors in booby breeding sites, although potential genetic resistance of blue-footed boobies to infection deserves examination. Apparent absence of blood parasites in Isla Isabel boobies indirectly adds to the growing evidence of variation in parasite infections among avian host species that coexist locally. During boar semen processing and distribution, maximizing the work protocols in the laboratories becomes essential for the conservation of seminal doses. One of the recent implementations in the boar studs to improve efficiency has been semi-automatic semen collection systems, which do not allow to discard fractions of the ejaculate. The objective of this work was to evaluate the dilution method and vibrations (simulating delivery transport) effect on sperm quality (motility, viability, morphology, thermo-resistance test) according to the fraction of ejaculate collected. Two different fractions of the ejaculate were obtained [rich fraction (RF); total fractions (TF)] from six boars, and two dilution methods applied [pouring the extender over the semen (control; ES); pouring the semen over the extender (reverse; SE)]. The seminal doses (2000 × 106 sperm/50 mL) were preserved for 5 days. The results showed that the fraction collected affects sperm quality (better total and progressive motility, and faster sperm in TF; p < 0.05) regardless of the dilution method applied. However, these differences diminished after submitting the semen to the thermo-resistance test, with only differences in sperm viability being observed (p < 0.05). When seminal doses were subjected to vibrations, the sperm viability was more affected in the TF than in the RF group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, using the TF ejaculate leads to comparable results to the RF in sperm quality during storage regardless of the dilution method applied. However, the vibrations of seminal doses are more affected in doses prepared with TF than with RF, although more factors should be included to approach the real conditions during transport. In recent years, tourism in Ecuador has increased exponentially. The city of Puerto Lopez has shown unusual growth. This study is based on a comparison of the situation of the Ecuadorian town before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. To achieve this primary objective, three specific goals were set out: 1) To analyze the perception that tourists have of the Canton of Puerto Lopez. 2) To examine the influence that tourism has on the local economy. 3) To study the impact of the pandemic on tourism development in the region. To achieve these objectives, quantitative research was carried out based on two surveys on perceptions of tourism activity. One was carried out before the arrival of Covid and the other after the pandemic. They are complemented by the collection of data from official statistics and stakeholder interviews. The main results also reveal opportunities for the tourism sector of Puerto López if we relate it to the SDGs_2030, as there is room for improvement in its current tourism model, and it can be made more sustainable from a social, economic and environmental point of view. The brown seaweed Sargassum muticum was processed by non isothermal autohydrolysis under conditions selected to maximize fucoidan solubilization (170 °C). Acetone precipitation was tried for recovery of fucose-containing oligosaccharides present in hydrolyzates. The acetone:hydrolyzate volume ratio influenced both yields and composition of the precipitated fractions. The sugar components were mostly found as oligomers, their content increased with acetone:hydrolyzate volume ratio 2.0 (v/v) exhibited slight. The fractions precipitated with 0.1 and 0.9 acetone volumes showed higher phenolic and sulfate content, which was positively correlated with the antiradical activity, and exhibited slightly cytotoxic activity against human colon adenocarcinoma cells. The highest volumes of acetone used led to a slight increase in the apparent viscosity as well as the elastic and viscous moduli of formulated aqueous dispersions of alginate. Steady-state and oscillatory shear measurements of above representative dispersions indicated that the alginate extracted after acetone precipitation exhibited a slight enhancement of the viscoelastic features. Study aim: To analyse the distribution of effort in the 800 m event at the IAAF World Athletics Championships in London 2017 (outdoor, 44 men, 45 women) and in Birmingham 2018 (indoor, 9 men, 14 women). Material and methods: A total of 187 individual performances during heats, semi-finals, and finals were analysed. The official split times of each athlete every 100 m were taken as reference for the analysis of: times; percentages of times in regard to the final time; speed; changes in position during the races; percentage deviations in terms of the average time per race per section of 100, 200 and 400 m. Results: There are different strategies used in the elite 800m race that are related to sex differences, the management of energy consumption and the differences and similarities between indoor and outdoor races. Melissopalynological analysis of 14 honey samples of Tetragonisca angustula (two), Scaptotrigona mexicana (six), Melipona beecheii (three) and Melipona solani (three) from Soconusco region in Chiapas, Mexico was performed. A total of 79 taxa were identified, being Asteraceae, Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae, Melostomataceae and Rubiaceae the predominant pollen types. Melissopalynological analysis reported a monofloral composition for Melipona beecheii honeys, where the most predominant pollen type was Fabaceae (54.2%). T. angustula, Scaptotrigona mexicana and Melipona solani honey samples were multifloral and predominant pollen types were Asteraceae, Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae, Melastomataceae and Solanaceae. The most frequent polliniferous pollen type were Asteraceae, Bernardia interrupta, Euphorbia heterophyla and Miconia. Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H′) for Melipona beecheii 2016 (2.21) and Melipona solani 2017 (1.64) were lower meanwhile honeys of Melipona beecheii 2017, S. mexicana 2017, Melipona solani 2016 and T. angustula 2017 were considered as fairly diverse, because they visited a wider range of plant species, by preferring shrub and wild strata such as: Asteraceae, Euphorbia, Euphorbiaceae, Miconia and Mimosa. Our results showed that the foraging behaviour of these bee species is polylectic, as no taxa was found to be more than 70% of the counted grains. Since the study of the collection of meliponine flower resources in the southern region of Mexico have not been studied yet, it is not possible to analyse the foraging behaviour, the use of resources and the management of these species in this region.
