To improve the amylose content (AC) and resistant starch content (RSC) of maize kernel starch, we employed the CRISPR/Cas9 system to create mutants of starch branching enzyme I (SBEI) and starch branching enzyme IIb (SBEIIb). A frameshift mutation in SBEI (E1, a nucleotide insertion in exon 6) led to plants with higher RSC (1.07%), lower hundred-kernel weight (HKW, 24.71 ± 0.14 g), and lower plant height (PH, 218.50 ± 9.42 cm) compared to the wild type (WT). Like the WT, E1 kernel starch had irregular, polygonal shapes with sharp edges. A frameshift mutation in SBEIIb (E2, a four-nucleotide deletion in exon 8) led to higher AC (53.48%) and higher RSC (26.93%) than that for the WT. E2 kernel starch was significantly different from the WT regarding granule morphology, chain length distribution pattern, X-ray diffraction pattern, and thermal characteristics; the starch granules were more irregular in shape and comprised typical B-type crystals. Mutating SBEI and SBEIIb (E12) had a synergistic effect on RSC, HKW, PH, starch properties, and starch biosynthesis-associated gene expression. SBEIIa, SSI, SSIIa, SSIIIa, and SSIIIb were upregulated in E12 endosperm compared to WT endosperm. This study lays the foundation for rapidly improving the starch properties of elite maize lines. Noise can shape the firing behaviors of neurons. Here, we show that noise acting on the fast variable of the Hedgehog burster can tune the spike counts of bursts via the self-induced stochastic resonance (SISR) phenomenon. Using the distance matching condition, the critical transition positions on the slow manifolds can be predicted and the stochastic periodic orbits for various noise strengths are obtained. The critical transition positions on the slow manifold with non-monotonic potential differences exhibit a staircase-like dependence on the noise strength, which is also revealed by the stepwise change in the period of the stochastic periodic orbit. The noise-tuned bursting is more coherent within each step while displaying mixed-mode oscillations near the boundaries between the steps. When noise is large enough, noise-induced trapping of the slow variable can be observed, where the number of coexisting traps increases with the noise strength. In this paper, the collective behaviors for ring structured bursting neuronal networks with electrical couplings and distance-dependent delays are studied. Each neuron is modeled by the Hindmarsh-Rose neuron. Through changing time delays between connected neurons, different spatiotemporal patterns are obtained. These patterns can be explained by calculating the ratios between the bursting period and the delay which exhibit clear locking relations. The holding and the failure of the lockings are investigated via bifurcation analysis. In particular, the bursting death phenomenon is observed for large coupling strengths and small time delays which is in fact the result of the partial amplitude death in the fast subsystem. These results indicate that the collective behaviors of bursting neurons critically depend on the bifurcation structure of individual ones and thus the variety of bifurcation types for bursting neurons may create diverse behaviors in similar neuronal ensembles. We consider the noise-induced escapes in an excitable system possessing a quasi-threshold manifold, along which there exists a certain point of minimal quasi-potential. In the weak noise limit, the optimal escaping path turns out to approach this particular point asymptotically, making it analogous to an ordinary saddle. Numerical simulations are performed and an elaboration on the effect of small but finite noise is given, which shows that the ridges where the prehistory probability distribution peaks are located mainly within the region where the quasi-potential increases gently. The cases allowing anisotropic noise are discussed and we found that varying the noise term in the slow variable would dramatically raise the whole level of quasi-potentials, leading to significant changes in both patterns of optimal paths and exit locations.
