Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic. The receptor binding domain (RBD), located at the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, contains most of the neutralizing epitopes during viral infection and is an ideal antigen for vaccine development. In this study, bioinformatic analysis of the amino acid sequence data of SARS-CoV-2 RBD protein for the better understanding of molecular characteristics was performed. The SARS-CoV-2 RBD gene was inserted into pET-28a vector, and efficiently expressed in E. coli system. Then, the recombinant proteins (RBD monomer and RBD dimer protein) were purified as antigen for animal immunization. Furthermore, the results showed that the recombinant proteins (RBD monomer and RBD dimer protein) had adequate immunogenicity to stimulate specific antibodies against the corresponding protein in immunized mice. Taken together, the results of this study revealed that RBD protein had a high immunogenicity. This study might have implications for future development of SARS-CoV-2 detection. Mitochondrial dysfunction is a salient feature of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (MIRI), while the potential mechanism of mitochondrial dynamics disorder remains unclear. This study sought to explore whether activation of Adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) could alleviate MIRI by regulating GTPase dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1)-mediated mitochondrial dynamics. Isolated mouse hearts in a Langendorff perfusion system were subjected to ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) treatment, and H9C2 cells were subjected to hypoxia/reoxygenation (H/R) treatment in vitro. The results showed that AICAR, the AMPK activator, could significantly improve the function of left ventricular, decrease arrhythmia incidence and myocardial infarction area of isolated hearts. Meanwhile, AICAR increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) content in myocardial homogenate. Mechanistically, AICAR inhibited the phosphorylation of Drp1 at Ser 616 while enhanced phosphorylation of Drp1 at Ser 637. In addition, AICAR reduced the expression of inflammatory cytokines including TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β, as well as mitochondrial fission genes Mff and Fis1, while improved the expression of mitochondrial fusion genes Mfn1 and Mfn2. Similar results were also observed in H9C2 cells. AICAR improved mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and inhibited mitochondrial damage. To further prove if Drp1 regulated mitochondrial dynamics mediated AMPK protection effect, the mitochondrial fission inhibitor Mdivi-1 was utilized. We found that Mdivi-1 significantly improved MMP, inhibited ROS production, reduced the expression of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β, Fis1, and Mff, and improved the expression of Mfn1 and Mfn2. However, the protection effect of Mdivi-1 was not reversed by AMPK inhibitor Compound C. In conclusion, this study confirmed that activation of AMPK exerted the protective effects on MIRI, which were largely dependent on the inhibition of Drp1-mediated mitochondrial fission. Introduction: Uncertainty intolerance and perceived environmental uncertainty can influence an individual's emotions and behavioral responses. Previous research showed that high uncertainty intolerance and high perceived environmental uncertainty were both negatively associated with an individual's life satisfaction. We explored the interaction effects of uncertainty intolerance and perceived environmental uncertainty on ego depletion of early adulthood and its mechanisms. Methods: Investigating 292 college students using an uncertainty intolerance scale, a perceived environmental uncertainty scale, a negative coping style questionnaire, and an ego depletion scale. The correlations among all variables were calculated using Pearson's product-moment correlation coefficient, and then we used the PROCESS macro (model 8) in SPSS to test the conditional process model in the relationship between uncertainty intolerance and ego depletion. Results: The results showed that the interaction terms of uncertainty intolerance and perceived environmental uncertainty were significantly associated with negative coping styles. Only in the high perceived environmental uncertainty situations, uncertainty intolerance was positively associated with negative coping styles, and negative coping styles were positively associated with ego depletion. Discussion: In general, compared with perceived environmental uncertainty, participants' cognition towards environmental uncertainty was much more associated with individual's coping styles and psychological state, individuals with high uncertainty intolerance would face great stress and experience more emotional problems. Our results suggest that it is important for individuals' mental health to gain a sense of control in an uncertain environment and improve the tolerance of uncertainty. Lewis Fry Richardson proposed his famous picture of turbulent flows in 1922, where the kinetic energy is transferred from large-scale to small-scale structures until the viscosity converts it into heat. This cascade idea, also known as the forward energy cascade, is now widely accepted and is treated as the cornerstone of not only turbulent modeling, but also global circulation models of the ocean and atmosphere. In this work, the Filter-Space-Technique is applied to the oceanic flow field provided by the CMEMS reanalysis model to quantify the scale-to-scale energy flux. A rich dynamical pattern associated with different scales is observed. More precisely, either positive or negative fluxes are observed, indicating the direction of the energy cascade, where the energy is transferred from large-scale structures to small-scale ones or vice versa. High-intensity energy exchange is found mainly in the Western Boundary Current Systems and Equatorial Counter Currents. For the latter case, a wavelike pattern is observed on the westward travel. Moreover, strong seasonal variation is evident for some scales and regions. These results confirm the existence of forward and inverse cascades and rich regional dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2s) play a crucial role in house dust mite (HDM)-induced allergic inflammation, and allergen immunotherapy (AIT) holds promise for treating the disease by reducing the frequency of ILC2s. Despite significant progress in AIT for allergic diseases, there remains a need to improve the control of allergic symptoms. Methods: We investigated the synergistic effect of the Notch signaling pathway and subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) in treating allergic airway inflammation in mice and their impact on the ratio of ILC2s in lung tissues. This was achieved by establishing the HDM-induced airway allergic disorders (HAAD) model and SCIT model. Additionally, we conducted in vitro investigations into the effect of the Notch signaling pathway on the secretory function of activated ILC2s using fluorescence-activated cell sorting. Furthermore, we explored the coactivation of the Notch signaling pathway with SCIT in vitro by sorting ILC2s from the lung tissues of mice after SCIT modeling. Results: Previously, our group demonstrated that Notch signaling pathway inhibitors can reduce allergic airway inflammation in mice. Notch signaling induces lineage plasticity of mature ILC2s. In this study, we showed that AIT alleviates allergic airway inflammation and suppresses the frequency of ILC2s induced by HDM. Interestingly, AIT combined with a g-secretase inhibitor (GSI), an inhibitor of the Notch signaling pathway, significantly inhibited the frequency of ILC2s, reduced airway inflammation, and suppressed Th2-type responses in a mouse model. Furthermore, lung ILC2s from HDM-challenged mice with or without AIT were treated with GSI in vitro, and we found that GSI dramatically reduced the secretion of type 2 inflammatory factors in ILC2s. Discussion: These findings suggest that Notch signaling pathway inhibitors can be used as adjuvant therapy for AIT and may hold potential treatment value in the cooperative control of allergic airway inflammation during early AIT. Melittin, a classical antimicrobial peptide, is a highly potent antitumor agent. However, its significant toxicity seriously hampers its application in tumor therapy. In this study, we developed novel melittin analogs with pH-responsive, cell-penetrating and membranelytic activities by replacing arginine and lysine with histidine. After conjugation with camptothecin (CPT), CPT-AAM-1 and CPT-AAM-2 were capable of killing tumor cells by releasing CPT at low concentrations and disrupting cell membranes at high concentrations under acidic conditions. Notably, we found that the C-terminus of the melittin analogs was more suitable for drug conjugation than the N-terminus. CPT-AAM-1 significantly suppressed melanoma growth in vivo with relatively low toxicity. Collectively, the present study demonstrates that the development of antitumor drugs based on pH-responsive antimicrobial peptide-drug conjugates is a promising strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of parental emotional neglect on the academic procrastination of late adolescents and further analyze the mediating role of future self-continuity and ego depletion. This study included 609 college students, 344 males and 265 females, ranging in age from 17 to 21 years (M = 18.39, SD = 0.82), who responded to four questionnaires measuring parental emotional neglect, academic procrastination, future self-continuity, and ego depletion, respectively. The results showed that future self-continuity and ego depletion mediated the association between parental emotional neglect and late adolescents' academic procrastination in a serial pattern. Perceived higher levels of parental emotional neglect correlated with lower future self-continuity and higher ego depletion in these late adolescents, leading to higher levels of academic procrastination. Attribute reduction, as one of the essential applications of the rough set, has attracted extensive attention from scholars. Information granulation is a key step of attribute reduction, and its efficiency has a significant impact on the overall efficiency of attribute reduction. The information granulation of the existing neighborhood rough set models is usually a single layer, and the construction of each information granule needs to search all the samples in the universe, which is inefficient. To fill such gap, a new neighborhood rough set model is proposed, which aims to improve the efficiency of attribute reduction by means of two-layer information granulation. The first layer of information granulation constructs a mapping-equivalence relation that divides the universe into multiple mutually independent mapping-equivalence classes. The second layer of information granulation views each mappingequivalence class as a sub-universe and then performs neighborhood information granulation. A model named mapping-equivalence neighborhood rough set model is derived from the strategy of two-layer information granulation. Experimental results show that compared with other neighborhood rough set models, thismodel can effectively improve the efficiency of attribute reduction and reduce the uncertainty of the system. Background: Gliomas are the most common primary tumors of the central nervous system, with high heterogeneity and highly variable survival rates. Accurate classification and prognostic assessment are key to the selection of treatment strategies. One hallmark of the tumor is resistance to cell death. PANoptosis, a novel mode of programmed cell death, has been frequently reported to be involved in the innate immunity associated with pathogen infection and played an important role in cancers. However, the intrinsic association of PANoptosis with glioma requires deeper investigation. Methods: The genetics and expression of the 17 reported PANoptosome-related genes were analyzed in glioma. Based on these genes, patients were divided into two subtypes by consensus clustering analysis. After obtaining the differentially expressed genes between clusters, a prognostic model called PANopotic score was constructed after univariate Cox regression, LASSO regression, and multivariate Cox regression. The expression of the 5 genes included in the PANopotic score was also examined by qPCR in our cohort. The prognostic differences, clinical features, TME infiltration status, and immune characteristics between PANoptotic clusters and score groups were compared, some of which even extended to pan-cancer levels. Results: Gene mutations, CNVs and altered gene expression of PANoptosomerelated genes exist in gliomas. Two PANoptotic clusters were significantly different in prognosis, clinical features, immune characteristics, and mutation landscapes. The 5 genes included in the PANopotic score had significantly altered expression in glioma samples in our cohort. The high PANoptotic score group was inclined to show an unfavorable prognosis, lower tumor purity, worse molecular genetic signature, and distinct immune characteristics related to immunotherapy. The PANoptotic score was considered as an independent prognostic factor for glioma and showed superior prognostic assessment efficacy over several reported models. PANopotic score was included in the nomogram constructed for the potential clinical prognostic application. The associations of PANoptotic score with prognostic assessment and tumor immune characteristics were also reflected at the pan-cancer level. Conclusion: Molecular subtypes of glioma based on PANoptosome-related genes were proposed and PANoptotic score was constructed with different clinical characteristics of anti-tumor immunity. Purpose Mixed-lineage leukemia protein 4 (MLL4/KMT2D) is a histone methyltransferase, and its mutation has been reported to be associated with a poor prognosis in many cancers, including lung cancer. We investigated the function of MLL4 in lung carcinogenesis. Materials and Methods RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) in A549 cells transfected with control siRNA or MLL4 siRNA was performed. Also, we used EdU incorporation assay, colony formation assays, growth curve analysis, transwell invasion assays, immunohistochemical staining, and in vivo bioluminescence assay to investigate the function of MLL4 in lung carcinogenesis. Results We found that MLL4 expression was downregulated in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tissues compared to adjacent normal tissues and tended to decrease with disease stage progression. We analyzed the transcriptomes in control and MLL4-deficient cells using high-throughput RNA deep sequencing (RNA-seq) and identified a cohort of target genes, such as SOX2, ATF1, FOXP4, PIK3IP1, SIRT4, TENT5B, and LFNG, some of which are related to proliferation and metastasis. Our results showed that low expression of MLL4 promotes NSCLC cell proliferation and metastasis and is required for the maintenance of NSCLC stem cell properties. Conclusion Our findings identify an important role of MLL4 in lung carcinogenesis through transcriptional regulation of PIK3IP1, affecting the PI3K/AKT/SOX2 axis, and suggest that MLL4 could be a potential prognostic indicator and target for NSCLC therapy. The current study aimed to test the perceivers' ratings of likability and their willingness to become friends with targets who have different ratios of warmth to competence. In Study 1, we recruited 106 females and 61 males. The results of Study 1 showed that perceivers were reluctant to become friends with targets that had extreme ratios of warmth to competence (0:5 or 5:0). In Study 2, we recruited 137 males and 164 females. The results of Study 2 showed that male perceivers were willing to become friends with a female target whose ratio of warmth to competence was 5:0 and unwilling to become friends with a male target whose ratio was 0:5. Female perceivers were unwilling to become friends with a female target whose ratio was 0:5. Moreover, participants were unwilling to choose targets with a ratio of 5:0 as partners in a competition context. Chia is an annual crop whose seeds have the highest content of a-linolenic acid (ALA) of any plant known to date. We generated a high-quality assembly of the chia genome using circular consensus sequencing (CCS) of PacBio. The assembled six chromosomes are composed of 21 contigs and have a total length of 361.7 Mb. Genome annotation revealed a 53.5% repeat content and 35,850 protein-coding genes. Chia shared a common ancestor with Salvia splendens ~6.1 million years ago. Utilizing the reference genome and two transcriptome datasets, we identified candidate fatty acid desaturases responsible for ALA biosynthesis during chia seed development. Because the seed of S. splendens contains significantly lower proportion of ALA but similar total contents of unsaturated fatty acids, we suggest that strong expression of two ShFAD3 genes are critical for the high ALA content of chia seeds. Objective: This study aimed to analyze and visualize the current research focus, research frontiers, evolutionary processes, and trends of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of gastric cancer using a bibliometric analysis. Methods: The Web of Science Core Collection database was selected as the data source for this study to retrieve and obtain articles and reviews related to AI in gastric cancer. All the information extracted from the articles was imported to CiteSpace to conduct the bibliometric and knowledge map analysis, allowing us to clearly visualize the research hotspots and trends in this field. Results: A total of 183 articles published between 2017 and 2022 were included, contributed by 201 authors from 33 countries/regions. Among them, China (47.54%), Japan (21.86%), and the USA (13.11%) have made outstanding contributions in this field, accounting fsor 82.51% of the total publications. The primary research institutions were Wuhan University, Tokyo University, and Tada Tomohiro Inst Gastroenterol and Proctol. Tada (n = 12) and Hirasawa (n = 90) were ranked first in the top 10 authors and co-cited authors, respectively. Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (21 publications; IF 2022, 9.189; Q1) was the most published journal, while Gastric Cancer (133 citations; IF 2022, 8.171; Q1) was the most co-cited journal. Nevertheless, the cooperation between different countries and institutions should be further strengthened. The most common keywords were AI, gastric cancer, and convolutional neural network. The "deep-learning algorithm" started to burst in 2020 and continues till now, which indicated that this research topic has attracted continuous attention in recent years and would be the trend of research on AI application in GC. Conclusions: Research related to AI in gastric cancer is increasing exponentially. Current research hotspots focus on the application of AI in gastric cancer, represented by convolutional neural networks and deep learning, in diagnosis and differential diagnosis and staging. This study explored the effect of current performance on the predicted wellbeing for future success and its mechanism. This empirical research consists of two experiments. In Study 1, the individual's predicted well-being of future performance in the tests was lower in good feedback condition compared with bad feedback condition. It means that individuals have a higher expectation of future success after an unimportant loss. Study 2 focused on the moderating role of self-threat situations and the mediating role of affect and self-esteem in the effect of current performance feedback on predicted well-being. The results showed that individuals who got bad feedback have a low predicted well-being of future success only in a high self-threatening condition. Selfthreat plays a moderating role between current performance and predicted well-being. The serial mediation role of affect and self-esteem in the negative effect of current performance on predicted well-being holds in high selfthreat situations. By specifying the behavioral consequences and analyzing the psychological process in high and low self-threat situations, this research expands the literature on development of appropriate cognitive theories and propose novel measures and practical implications of enhancing predicted well-being. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the current research hotspots and development tendency of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) in the field of neurobiology from a bibliometric perspective by providing visualized information to scientists and clinicians. Materials and methods: Publications related to tDCS published between 2000 and 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) on May 5, 2022. Bibliometric features including the number of publications and citations, citation frequency, H-index, journal impact factors, and journal citation reports were summarized using Microsoft Office Excel. Co-authorship, citation, co-citation, and co-occurrence analyses among countries, institutions, authors, co-authors, journals, publications, references, and keywords were analyzed and visualized using CiteSpace (version 6.1.R3). Results: A total of 4,756 publications on tDCS fulfilled the criteria we designed and then were extracted from the WOSCC. The United States (1,190 publications, 25.02%) and Harvard University (185 publications, 3.89%) were the leading contributors among all the countries and institutions, respectively. NITSCHE MA and FREGNI F, two key researchers, have made great achievements in tDCS. Brain Stimulation (306 publications) had the highest number of publications relevant to tDCS and the highest number of citations (4,042 times). In terms of potential hotspots, we observed through reference co-citation analysis timeline viewer related to tDCS that “depression”#0, “Sensorimotor network”#10, “working memory”#11, and “Transcranial magnetic stimulation”#9 might be the future research hotspots, while keywords with the strong burst and still ongoing were “intensity” (2018–2022), “impairment” (2020–2022), “efficacy” (2020–2022), and “guideline” (2020–2022). Conclusion: This was the first-ever study of peer-reviewed publications relative to tDCS using several scientometric and visual analytic methods to quantitatively and qualitatively reveal the current research status and trends in the field of tDCS. Through the bibliometric method, we gained an in-depth understanding of the current research status and development trend on tDCS. Background: Neuroblastoma is the most common malignant extracranial tumor for children. Molecular mechanisms underpinning the pathogenesis of this disease are yet to be fully clarified. This study aimed to identify a novel oncogene that could be used as a biomarker informing the prognosis of neuroblastoma, and to predict its biological functions, using bioinformatics and molecular biology tools. Methods: Three data sets from the TARGET, GSE62564, and GSE85047 databases were used for analysis. Survivals of patients with high or low expression of bub1 were compared, using the Kaplan-Meier curve and logrank test. Immune infiltration was evaluated using ESTIMATE and MCP-counter algorithms. Synthetic small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) were employed to silence bub1 expression in neuroblastoma cell lines SH-SY5Y and SK-N-SH, in order to characterize its biological functions. Gene enrichment analyses of bub1 were carried out, using Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses. Results: Expression of bub1 was found to significantly affect overall survival and event-free survival of patients with neuroblastoma, positively correlate with the expressions of tpx2 and the ASPM gene, and negatively correlate with host immune infiltration. Expression of bub1 was elevated in patients with neuroblastoma. Silencing bub1 expression using siRNAs in SH-SY5Y and SKN- SH resulted in decreased cell growth (p < 0.05), reduced migration (p < 0.05), and increased apoptosis (p < 0.05). Function analysis of bub1 revealed cancerpromoting effects, probably via regulating several important downstream molecules, including that related to the apoptosis process and epithelialmesenchymal transition. Weizhou Island and Xieyang Island are two large and young volcanic sea islands in the northern part of the South China Sea. In this study, high-throughput sequencing (HTS) of 16S rRNA genes was used to explore the diversity of Actinobacteria in the Weizhou and Xieyang Islands. Moreover, a traditional culture-dependent method was utilized to isolate Actinobacteria, and their antibacterial and cytotoxic activities were detected. The alpha diversity indices (ACE metric) of the overall bacterial communities for the larger island (Weizhou) were higher than those for the smaller island (Xieyang). A beta diversity analysis showed a more dispersive pattern of overall bacterial and actinobacterial communities on a larger island (Weizhou). At the order level, Frankiales, Propionibacteriales, Streptomycetales, Micrococcales, Pseudonocardiales, Micromonosporales, Glycomycetales, Corynebacteriales, and Streptosporangiales were the predominant Actinobacteria. A total of 22.7% of the OTUs shared 88%-95% similarity with some known groups. More interestingly, 15 OTUs formed a distinct and most predominant clade, and shared identities of less than 95% with any known families. This is the first report about this unknown group and their 16S rRNA sequences obtained from volcanic soils. A total of 268 actinobacterial strains were isolated by the culturedependent method. Among them, 55 Streptomyces species were isolated, representing that 76.6% of the total. S. variabilis and S. flavogriseus were the most abundant. Moreover, some rare Actinobacteria were isolated. These included Micromonospora spp., Nocardia spp., Amycolatopsis spp., Tsukamurella spp., Mycobacterium spp., and Nonomuraea spp. Among them, eight Streptomyces spp. exhibited antibacterial activity against Bacillus cereus. Only three strains inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli. Four strains showed good activity against aquatic pathogenic bacterial strains of Streptococcus iniae. The cytotoxicity assay results showed that 27 strains (10.07%) exhibited cytotoxic activity against HeLa and A549 cell lines. Many actinobacterial strains with cytotoxic activity were identified as rare Actinobacteria, which illustrated that volcanic islands are vast reservoirs for Actinobacteria with promising antibacterial and cytotoxic activity. This study may significantly improve our understanding of actinobacterial communities on volcanic islands. The isolated Actinobacteria showed promising prospects for future use. Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo is a famous Chinese herb. D. officinale grows on rocks where the available phosphorus is low. The SPX family plays a critical role in maintaining Pi homeostasis in plants. In this paper, 9 SPX family genes were identified in the genome of D. officinale. Bioinformatics and qRT-PCR analysis showed that DoSPXs were involved in response to −Pi stress and had different expression patterns. DoSPX4, which had a unique expression pattern, was clustered with AtSPX4 and OsSPX4. Under −Pi treatment, the expression level of DoSPX4 reached a peak on 5 d in roots, while showing a downward trend in the aboveground parts. DoSPX4 was located on the cell membrane. Overexpression DoSPX4 promoted Pi content in the stem and the expression level of NtPHT1/2 in Nicotiana tabacum. Mitochondrial dysfunction is a salient feature of myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (MIRI), while the potential mechanism of mitochondrial dynamics disorder remains unclear. This study sought to explore whether activation of Adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) could alleviate MIRI by regulating GTPase dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1)-mediated mitochondrial dynamics. Isolated mouse hearts in a Langendorff perfusion system were subjected to ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) treatment, and H9C2 cells were subjected to hypoxia /reoxygenation (H/R) treatment in vitro. The results showed that AICAR, the AMPK activator, could significantly improve the function of left ventricular, decrease arrhythmia incidence and myocardial infarction area of isolated hearts. Meanwhile, AICAR increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) content in myocardial homogenate. Mechanistically, AICAR inhibited the phosphorylation of Drp1 at Ser 616 while enhanced phosphorylation of Drp1 at Ser 637. In addition, AICAR reduced the expression of inflammatory cytokines including TNF-ɑ, IL-6, and IL-1β, as well as mitochondrial fission genes Mff and Fis1, while improved the expression of mitochondrial fusion genes Mfn1 and Mfn2. Similar results were also observed in H9C2 cells. AICAR improved mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and inhibited mitochondrial damage. To further prove if Drp1 regulated mitochondrial dynamics mediated AMPK protection effect, the mitochondrial fission inhibitor Mdivi-1 was utilized. We found that Mdivi-1 significantly improved MMP, inhibited ROS production, reduced the expression of TNF-a, IL-6, IL-1β, Fis1, and Mff, and improved the expression of Mfn1 and Mfn2. However, the protection effect of Mdivi-1 was not reversed by AMPK inhibitor Compound C. In conclusion, this study confirmed that activation of AMPK exerted the protective effects on MIRI, which were largely dependent on the inhibition of Drp1- mediated mitochondrial fission. The purpose of our research was to compare how participants weighed age, gender, race, and career categories in recognizing and grouping tasks. In Study 1, we used a category recognition task to compare participants' speeds in recognizing information from different categories. The results showed that participants recognized the gender information most quickly, followed by career, race, and age information. In Study 2, a categorization task was used to compare participants' category preferences. The results showed that the career category had the greatest weight, and the gender category had the lowest weight. Two targets who had different career identities were more possible considered as belonging to different groups than two targets with different gender, race or age identities. Our results have implications in understanding the weight of different categories, with gender and career category are the most important category that affects perception and evaluation. The SrTiO3 photocatalyst is successfully prepared by three different routes including a sol–gel method, a acrylamide gel method, and a hydrothermal synthesis method. Phase structure and FTIR analysis indicate that the phase purity and crystallinity of the SrTiO3 photocatalyst are strongly dependent on the synthetic route. The carbonate ion and C–C-stretching vibration peak decorated SrTiO3 oxides improved the surface morphology, BET specific surface area, optical, and electrochemical properties and photocatalytic activity of the SrTiO3 photocatalyst significantly. Photocatalytic experiments indicate that the carbonate ion and C–C-stretching vibration peak decorated SrTiO3 oxides exhibits highest photocatalytic activity for degradation of the congo red dye under simulated sunlight irradiation. The effects of dye concentration, catalyst concentration, and pH value on the photocatalytic activity of the carbonate ion and C–C-stretching vibration peak decorated SrTiO3 oxides were systematically investigated. The excellent photocatalytic activity for the carbonate ion and C–C-stretching vibration peak decorated SrTiO3 oxides can be ascribed to the low recombination and high charge separation due to the synergistic effect of the carbonate ion and the C–C-stretching vibration peak. Purpose: To evaluate the safety and effect of microwave ablation (MWA) compared with transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) for the treatment of large hepatic hemangiomas. Materials and methods: A total of 135 patients with symptomatic or/and enlarging hepatic hemangiomas (5–10 cm) from two centers underwent either MWA (n ¼ 82) or TAE (n ¼ 53) as first-line treatment. We compared the two groups in terms of radiologic response, clinical response, operative time, postoperative analgesic requirements, hospital stay and complications. Results: MWA had a significantly higher rate of complete radiologic response (89.0% vs. 37.7%, p<.001) and complete clinical response (88.6% vs. 69.2%, p¼.046), fewer minor complications (43.9% vs. 66.0%, p¼.019), shorter time of using analgesics (p<.001) and shorter hospital stays (p¼.003) than did TAE. The operative time and major complications were comparable between the two groups. Conclusion: Both MWA and TAE are safe and effective in treating patients with large hepatic hemangiomas. Background: The present study aimed to explore the changes in the hepatic metabolic profile during the evolution of diabetes mellitus (DM) and verify the key metabolic pathways. Methods: Liver samples were collected from diabetic rats induced by streptozotocin (STZ) and rats in the control group at 1, 5, and 9 weeks after STZ administration. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR)-based metabolomics was used to examine the metabolic changes during the evolution of DM, and partial least squares-discriminate analysis (PLS-DA) was performed to identify the key metabolites. Results: We identified 40 metabolites in the 1H NMR spectra, and 11 metabolites were further selected by PLS-DA model. The levels of α-glucose and β-glucose, which are two energy-related metabolites, gradually increased over time in the DM rats, and were significantly greater than those of the control rats at the three-time points. The levels of choline, betaine, and methionine decreased in the DM livers, indicating that the protective function in response to liver injury may be undermined by hyperglycemia. The levels of the other amino acids (leucine, alanine, glycine, tyrosine, and phenylalanine) were significantly less than those of the control group during DM development. Conclusions: Our results suggested that the hepatic metabolic pathways of glucose, choline-betaine-methionine, and amino acids were disturbed during the evolution of diabetes, and that choline-betaine-methionine metabolism may play a key role. Due to its pharmacological activities, Paecilomyces tenuipes has previously been used as a folk medicine in Asia. The primary aim of the present study was to investigate the hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and anti-nephritic effects of P. tenuipes N45 aqueous extracts (PTNE) in a high fat diet/streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat model. The rats were treated with 120 mg/kg of metformin or 0.04, 0.2 or 1.0 g/kg PTNE for 4 weeks. The hypoglycemic activity of PTNE was confirmed by the observation of reduced fasting blood glucose level and by partially normalized oral glucose tolerance. PTNE reduced total cholesterol and triglyceride content, and balanced the levels of low-density and high-density lipoproteins. The suppressive effects of PTNE on creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, interleukin (IL)-2, IL-6 and nuclear factor-κB levels indicated its ability to provide protection against diabetic nephropathy. PTNE treatment increased superoxide dismutase, malondialdehyde and glutathione peroxidase levels, suggesting that its anti-diabetic and anti-nephropathic activities may be associated with the prevention of oxidative damage during type 2 diabetic mellitus. Background: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a key mediator that plays an important role in angiogenesis, tumor growth, and tumor metastasis. The associations between five polymorphisms of VEGF (rs3025039, rs699947, rs10434, rs1570360, and rs2010963) and renal cell carcinoma (RCC) risk have been extensively investigated, but the currently available results are inconsistent and inconclusive. To obtain a more accurate assessment of the associations, we conducted a meta-analysis in this study. Materials and methods: Relevant studies were collected systemically from the following three electronic databases: MEDLINE, Web of Science, and CNKI (Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure). Statistical analyses were performed using Review Manager 5.2 in a fixed- or random-effects model. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated to establish the strength of associations. Results: A total of eight case-control studies with 1,936 RCC cases and 2,770 controls fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected for this meta-analysis. The pooled OR indicated that rs699947 polymorphism was significantly associated with RCC risk in all genetic models. A significant association was also found between the rs3025039 polymorphism and RCC risk in a homozygous model (TT vs CC: OR =1.38, 95% CI =1.11-1.72, P=0.004), a dominant model (CT+TT vs CC: OR =1.21, 95% CI =1.05-1.39, P=0.01), and a recessive model (TT vs CC+CT: OR =1.28, 95% CI =1.04-1.57, P=0.02). After a subgroup analysis of ethnicity in the allele contrast model of rs3025039 polymorphism, we found a significant relationship in the allele contrast model (T vs C: OR =1.21, 95% CI =1.05-1.40, P=0.007) in the Asian population. With regard to rs10434 polymorphism, significant association was observed only in a homozygous model (GG vs AA: OR =0.75, 95% CI =0.57-0.98, P=0.03). As to rs1570360 or rs2010963, we did not observe any relationship between the two polymorphisms and RCC risk in our study. Conclusion: Our meta-analysis confirmed the fact that rs699947, rs3025039, and rs10434 polymorphisms were significantly relevant to elevated RCC risk. Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy of computed tomography (CT)-guided 125I brachytherapy alone in improving the survival and quality of life of patients with unresectable locally advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after one cycle of first-line chemotherapy. Patients and methods: Sixteen patients with locally advanced NSCLC were treated with CT-guided 125I brachytherapy after one cycle of first-line chemotherapy (group A). Sixteen patients who received only best supportive care (group B) were matched up with the patients in group A. Primary end point included survival, and secondary end point included assessment of safety, effectiveness of CT-guided 125I brachytherapy, and improvement in the quality of life. Results: The two groups were well balanced in terms of age, disease histology, tumor stage, tumor location, and performance status (P>0.05). The median follow-up time was 16 months (range, 3-30). The total tumor response rate was 75.0% in group A, which was significantly higher than that in group B (0.0%) (P<0.01). The median progression-free survival time was 4.80 months for patients in group A and 1.35 months for patients in group B (P<0.001). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that the median survival time of group A was 9.4±0.3 months versus 8.4±0.1 months in group B (P=0.013). Tumor-related symptoms of patients were significantly relieved, and the quality of life was markedly improved in group A than in group B. Conclusion: CT-guided 125I brachytherapy improved the survival of patients with locally advanced NSCLC and quality of life after one cycle of first-line chemotherapy compared with best supportive care. The purpose of the current study was to identify the functional significance of conflicting stereotypes and to identify the dominant category in such conflicts. In the present research we examined the conflicting crossed categories of age and wealth with regard to warmth and competence perceptions. It was found (Pilot Study and Study 1) that the old-rich targets presented a conflicting stereotype group in the perception of warmth, whereas young-poor targets presented a conflicting stereotype group in the perception of competence. In addition, the old stereotype dominated the warmth evaluation of old-rich targets, whereas the poor stereotype dominated the competence evaluation of young-poor targets. In Study 2, participants provided warmth and competence evaluations after they learned about the targets’ behaviors which demonstrated high or low warmth and high or low competence. The results suggest that for the warmth evaluation of the old-rich target the category that did not match the behavior (i.e., contradicted the stereotype expectation) was more salient and drove judgments. However, the effect of stereotype expectation violation was not found in the competence evaluation of the young-poor target. Cordyceps militaris (CM), an entomopathogenic fungus belonging to the class ascomycetes, possesses various pharmacological activities, including cytotoxic effects, on various types of human tumor cells. The present study investigated the anti-hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and anti-breast cancer effects of CM in in vitro and in vivo models. CM aqueous extract reduced cell viability, suppressed cell proliferation, inhibited cell migration ability, caused the over-release of lactate dehydrogenase, induced mitochondrial dysfunction and enhanced apoptotic rates in MCF-7 and HepG2 cells. The expression levels of cleaved poly (ADP ribose) polymerase and caspase-3, biomarkers of apoptosis, were increased following treatment with CM aqueous extract for 24 h. Furthermore, in the MCF-7 and HepG2 cells, enhanced levels of B cell-associated X protein and cleaved caspase-8 were observed in the CM-treated cells. Finally, the antitumor activities of CM in HCC and breast cancer were also confirmed in MCF-7- and HepG2-xengraft nude mice models. Collectively, the data obtained in the present study suggested that the cytotoxic effects of CM aqueous extract on HCC and breast cancer are associated with the caspase-dependent mitochondrial pathway. Background: Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of female-specific cancer-related deaths after breast cancer, especially in developing countries. However, the incidence of the disease may be significantly decreased if the patient is diagnosed in the pre-cancerous lesion stage or earlier. In recent years, computer-based algorithms are widely used in cervical cancer screening. Most of the proposed algorithms follow the procedure of segmentation, feature extraction, and then classification. Nevertheless, few of the existing segmentation methods are as flexible and robust as the human visual system, and the complexity of the algorithms makes it difficult for clinical application.Methods: In this study, a computer-assisted analytical approach is proposed to identify the existence of suspicious cells in a whole slide cervical cell image (WSCCI). The main difference between our method and the conventional algorithm is that the image is divided into blocks with certain size instead of segmented cells, which can greatly reduce the computational complexity. Via data analysis, some texture and color histogram features show significant differences between blocks with and without suspicious cells. Therefore these features can be used as the input of the support vector machine classifier. 1100 non-background blocks (110 suspicious blocks) are trained to build a model, while 1040 blocks (491 non-background blocks) from 12 other WSCCIs are tested to verify the feasibility of the algorithm.Results: The experimental results show that the accuracy of our method is about 98.98 %. More importantly, the sensitivity, which is more fatal in cancer screening, is 95.0 % according to the images tested in the study, while the specificity is 99.33 %.Conclusion: The analysis of the algorithm is based on block images, which is different from conventional methods. Although some analysis work should be done in advance, the later processing speed will be greatly enhanced with the establishment of the model. Higher capacity and larger scales have always been the top targets for the evolution of optical access networks, driven by the ever-increasing demand from the end users. One thing that started to attract wide attention not long ago, but with at least equal importance as capacity and scale, is energy efficiency, a metric essential nowadays as human beings are confronted with severe environmental issues like global warming, air pollution, and so on. Here, different from the conventional energy consumption analysis of tree-topology networks, we propose an effective energy consumption calculation method to compare the energy efficiency of the tree-topology 10 gigabit ethernet passive optical network (10G-EPON) and ring-topology time- and wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (TWDM-PON), two experimental networks deployed in China. Numerical results show that the ring-topology TWDM-PON networks with 2, 4, 8, and 16 wave-lengths are more energy efficient than the tree-topology 10G-EPON, although 10G-EPON consumes less energy. Also, TWDM-PON with four wavelengths is the most energy-efficient network candidate and saves 58.7% more energy than 10G-EPON when fully loaded. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
