Lack of exercise contributes to systemic inflammation and is a major cause of chronic disease. The long‐term impact of initiating and sustaining exercise in late life, as opposed to sustaining a sedentary lifestyle, on whole‐body health measures such as physical performance is not well known. This is an exploratory study to compare changes in physical performance among older adults initiating exercise late in life versus inactive older adults. Data from two observational cohorts were included in this analysis, representing two activity groups. The Active group cohort comprises older adults (n = 318; age 72.5 ± 7.2 years) enrolled in a supervised exercise program, "Gerofit." The inactive group comprises older adults (n = 146; age 74.5 ± 5.5 years) from the Italian study "Act on Ageing" (AOA) who self‐reported being inactive. Participants in both groups completed physical performance battery at baseline and 1‐year including: 6‐min walk test, 30‐s chair stand, and timed up‐and‐go. Two‐sample t‐tests measured differences between Gerofit and AOA at baseline and 1‐year across all measures. Significant between‐group effects were seen for all performance measures (ps = 0.001). The AOA group declined across all measures from baseline to 1 year (range −18% to −24% change). The Gerofit group experienced significant gains in function for all measures (range +10% to +31% change). Older adults who initiated routine, sustained exercise were protected from age‐related declines in physical performance, while those who remained sedentary suffered cumulative deficits across strength, aerobic endurance, and mobility. Meltwater routing through ice masses exerts a fundamental control over glacier dynamics and mass balance, and proglacial hydrology. However, despite recent advances in mapping drainage systems in cold, Arctic glaciers, direct observations of englacial channels and their flow conditions remain sparse. Here, using terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) surveys of the main englacial channel of cold‐based Austre Brøggerbreen (Svalbard), we map and compare an entrance moulin reach (122 m long) and exit portal reach (273 m long). Analysis of channel planforms, longitudinal profiles, cross‐sections and morphological features reveals evidence of spatial variations in water flow conditions and channel incision mechanisms, and the presence of vadose, epiphreatic and phreatic conditions. The entrance reach, located at the base of a perennial moulin, was characterized by vadose, uniform, channel lowering at annual timescales, evidenced by longitudinal grooves, whereas the exit portal reach showed both epiphreatic and vadose conditions, along with upstream knickpoint migration at intra‐annual timescales. Fine‐scale features, including grooves and scallops, were readily quantified from the TLS point cloud, highlighting the capacity of the technique to inform palaeoflow conditions, and reveal how pulses of meltwater from rainfall events may adjust englacial conduit behaviour. With forecasts of increasing Arctic precipitation in the coming decades, and a progressively greater proportion of glaciers comprising cold ice, augmenting the current knowledge of englacial channel morphology is essential to constrain future glacier hydrological system change. Background: There is currently a lack of qualitative research exploring how cognitive and emotional reactions to the threat of SARS-CoV-2 affected the health behaviours of people living with and without pre-existing mental and physical health conditions. We aimed to investigate how the threat of SARS-CoV-2 influenced the thoughts, feelings and health behaviours of people with and without pre-existing health conditions in the UK. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey of UK adults (aged 18 and over). Free-text responses were analysed using a qualitative framework approach guided by the Common-Sense Model of Self-Regulation. Results: Of the 9110 respondents, 2763 participants provided at least one free-text response. Three main themes were derived from the data. Theme one, locus of control, reports on the extent to which people felt in control during the first wave of the pandemic. Theme two, emotional impact, conveys how individuals felt and how people's personal circumstances made them more vulnerable to experiencing negative emotions during the pandemic. Theme three, coping strategies, describes common health-protective and health-threatening behaviours performed by individuals, as well as the importance of social connectedness, the social context and the need for collective action during the first national lockdown. Conclusion: Complex psychological interventions including behaviour change are required to mitigate the psychological burden of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and increase autonomy in people with and without pre-existing conditions during this highly uncertain time. Behavioural scientists can support governments and public health agencies to develop evidence-based communication and behaviour change strategies that support people to address unhelpful beliefs and emotions and strengthen coping abilities as the UK moves through and beyond the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Using satellite remote sensing, this study aims to assess the validity of upscaling ground‐based structural observations of small valley glaciers, to larger‐scale ice masses that are too vast or inaccessible for field‐study or ground‐truthing. Focusing on four adjacent valley glaciers on Bylot Island, Nunavut, Arctic Canada, we establish that ground‐based structural observations from two smaller (Stagnation and Fountain Glaciers) can be used to interpret the structures visible in optical satellite imagery in two much larger glaciers (Aktineq and Sermilik Glaciers). All the glaciers investigated have prominent longitudinal lineations, which are interpreted from ground observations to be longitudinal foliation. Other structures that were identified include primary stratification, crevasses, crevasse traces, and thrust‐faults. Strong longitudinal foliation is concentrated at flow‐unit boundaries, with differential ablation of ice facies commonly resulting in a ridge‐and‐furrow supraglacial topography that controls supraglacial streams and debris concentrations. Consequently, areas of strong foliation appear darker than areas of weak foliation in satellite imagery. As coarser resolution imagery is utilized to map large‐scale ice masses, sub‐pixel structural information is lost. Individual lineations mapped in coarser resolution imagery therefore probably comprise groups of clustered foliation at the sub‐pixel scale. Lateral narrowing measurements and calculated one‐dimensional strain across zones of longitudinal foliation are assessed as a tool for identifying large‐scale surface strain patterns, in particular large‐scale pure shear regimes. These one‐dimensional strain measurements suggest that flow‐unit boundaries are areas that undergo considerable cumulative strains. There is evidence that engagement with the arts can engender transformative effects on young people's views of themselves and their futures, this can be particularly useful for children and young people in care. This paper draws on a case study of an arts-based programme delivered in Wales, UK. Field observations of the arts-based sessions were conducted, and the participant sample included young people in foster care (n = 8), foster carers (n = 7) and project facilitators (n = 3). The study employed interviews, observations, reflexive diaries, and metaphor work to explore the subjective accounts of these different stakeholders. This provided an insight into their experience of being involved with the arts-based programme, the impacts of this involvement, and what steps they felt could be taken to improve the model. The paper argues that arts and cultural engagement can be transformative in improving the confidence and social connectedness of young people in foster care, but that attention needs to be given to how programmes are delivered. The paper documents the often overlooked mundane, yet important, aspects of planning arts-based programmes, exploring the involvement of foster carers, interpersonal relationships, and the provision of refreshments. It calls for investment in developing carefully designed extracurricular opportunities for young people in care, where they can experience 'becoming more confident in being themselves'. The aims of this review are to: (a) describe and interpret structures in valley glaciers in relation to strain history; and (b) to explore how these structures inform our understanding of the kinematics of large ice masses, and a wide range of other aspects of glaciology. Structures in glaciers give insight as to how ice deforms at the macroscopic and larger scale. Structures also provide information concerning the deformation history of ice masses over centuries and millennia. From a geological perspective, glaciers can be considered to be models of rock deformation, but with rates of change that are measurable on a human time-scale. However, structural assemblages in glaciers are commonly complex, and unraveling them to determine the deformation history is challenging; it thus requires the approach of the structural geologist. A wide range of structures are present in valley glaciers: (a) primary structures include sedimentary stratification and various veins; (b) secondary structures that are the result of brittle and ductile deformation include crevasses, faults, crevasse traces, foliation, folds, and boudinage structures. Some of these structures, notably crevasses, relate well to measured strain-rates, but to explain ductile structures analysis of cumulative strain is required. Some structures occur in all glaciers irrespective of size, and they are therefore recognizable in ice streams and ice shelves. Structural approaches have wide (but as yet under-developed potential) application to other sub-disciplines of glaciology, notably glacier hydrology, debris entrainment and transfer, landform development, microbiological investigations, and in the interpretation of glacier-like features on Mars. This study presents a 1:25,000 geomorphological map of the northern sector of Ulu Peninsula, James Ross Island, Antarctic Peninsula. The map covers an area of c. 250 km², and documents the landforms and surficial sediments of one of the largest ice-free areas in Antarctica, based on remote sensing and field-based mapping. The large-scale landscape features are determined by the underlying Cretaceous sedimentary and Neogene volcanic geology, which has been sculpted by overlying ice masses during glacial periods. Paraglacial and periglacial features are superimposed upon remnant glacial features, reflecting the post-glacial evolution of the landscape. The study area can be broadly separated into three geomorphological sectors, according to the dominant contemporary Earth-surface processes; specifically, a glacierised southern sector, a paraglacial-dominated eastern sector, and a periglacial-dominated central/northern sector. This map provides a basis for further interdisciplinary research, and insight into the potential future landscape evolution of other parts of the Antarctic Peninsula as the climate warms. The Scandinavian Ice Sheet reached the Sudetes and Carpathian Mountains during the Elsterian glaciation. A long ice‐sheet piedmont marginal zone affected by the rugged mountain foreland topography and associated slopes originated. This study focuses on the hilly Rychleby Mts. foreland (Eastern Sudetes, Czechia), which was a part of the piedmont marginal foreland zone of the ice sheet. The basal regime was reconstructed through an investigation of the sedimentology, structural features, and the nature of ice‐sheet erosion of preglacial landscapes evident at two sites located ~3–5 km inside the maximum ice‐sheet extent. These sites show a preglacial relief buried by sub‐ to supraglacial sediments. The sites were located under an ice cover of max. 200 m. Evidence of cold‐based conditions (including palaeotors with delicate structures on the bedrock, almost absent striations on clasts, originally frozen unlithified sedimentary rafts) exists at both sites. Permafrost composed of coarse‐grained sediments was subject to brittle deformation at the base of the ice sheet, whereas permafrost composed of fine‐grained sediments underwent ductile deformation. The margin of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet in the Rychleby Mts. foreland was cold‐based, therefore glacial erosion was not sufficient to significantly remodel the palaeotors into roches moutonnées. Exercise is critical for health maintenance in late life. The COVID-19 shelter in place and social distancing orders resulted in wide-scale interruptions of exercise therapies, placing older adults at risk for the consequences of decreased mobilization. The purpose of this paper is to describe rapid transition of the Gerofit facility-based group exercise program to telehealth delivery. This Gerofit-to-Home (GTH) program continued with group-based synchronous exercise classes that ranged from 1 to 24 Veterans per class and 1 to 9 classes offered per week in the different locations. Three hundred and eight of 1149 (27%) Veterans active in the Gerofit facility-based programs made the transition to the telehealth delivered classes. Participants' physical performance testing continued remotely as scheduled with comparisons between most recent facility-based and remote testing suggesting that participants retained physical function. Detailed protocols for remote physical performance testing and sample exercise routines are described. Inter‐professional collaboration remains a significant concern within healthcare and social care. However, there has been scant attention paid to practices at the interface of clinicians and carers, namely foster carers and residential carers. The present study considers child and adolescent self‐harm management and prevention practices as a site of empirical interest due to reports that multi‐agency teams are not effectively operating. Drawing upon a grounded theory approach, data were generated via semi‐structured interviews and focus groups with residential carers (n = 15) and foster carers (n = 15) in Wales. Themes were developed through axial coding. The results present two central themes to explain the nature and perceived causes of inter‐professional discord. First, there are clear contestations in expertise, with carers challenging clinicians' propositional knowledge in favour of their own experiential expertise. However, participants simultaneously endorse medical dominance, which contributes to their sense of disempowerment and marginalisation. Second, is the preclusion of carers' professional identity, primarily due to inadequate professionalisation procedures. Meanwhile, the privileging of their parenting role is perceived to support the perpetuation of courtesy stigma. Carers are then compelled to undertake the effortful labour of legitimisation. Dendritic cells (DC) are key phagocytic cells that play crucial roles in both the innate and adaptive immune responses against the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). By processing and presenting pathogen-derived antigens, dendritic cells initiate a directed response against infected cells. They activate the adaptive immune system upon recognition of pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) on infected cells. During the course of HIV-1 infection, a successful adaptive (cytotoxic CD8+ T-cell) response is necessary for preventing the progression and spread of infection in a variety of cells. Dendritic cells have thus been recognized as a valuable tool in the development of immunotherapeutic approaches and vaccines effective against HIV-1. The advancements in dendritic cell vaccines in cancers have paved the way for applications of this form of immunotherapy to HIV-1 infection. Clinical trials with patients infected with HIV-1 who are well-suppressed by antiretroviral therapy (ART) were recently performed to assess the efficacy of DC vaccines, with the goal of mounting an HIV-1 antigen-specific T-cell response, ideally to clear infection and eliminate the need for long-term ART. This review summarizes and compares methods and efficacies of a number of DC vaccine trials utilizing autologous dendritic cells loaded with HIV-1 antigens. Content analysis of 463 student surveys was used to uncover the nature and prevalence of bullying behaviors within volunteer middle schools across the Southern United States. After completing a training to understand and distinguish between bullying and cyberbullying, students in grades six through eight from three southern states completed surveys and were given the opportunity to participate in face-to-face interviews. Of those surveyed, over 37% reported being bullied either face-to-face or online, with under 31% reporting bullying incidents to adults. Structural glaciological maps can be used to study the structural evolution and past dynamics of glaciers. The map described here documents the glacier-wide structural characteristics of Austre Brøggerbreen, ac. 12 km2predominantly cold-based valley glacier in northwest Svalbard. The structural map reveals that the glacier is dominated by deep-penetrating fractures that are now relict (crevasse traces). These structures indicate that, despite being relatively inactive at present, the glacier was once much more dynamic, presumably during its last advance in the Neoglacial (c. 1900 AD). Contemporary glacier structures (i.e. those that are actively forming) include primary stratification, longitudinal foliation and rare surface fracturing (crevasses and water-healed crevasses). Relict fracture sets become increasingly re-orientated and folded down-glacier as a result of ductile flow. Individual flow units show large differences in the evolution of structures, indicating that the flow units have been subject to different flow histories and dynamics. Herpes simplex viruses are ubiquitous human pathogens represented by two distinct serotypes: herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 (HSV-1); and HSV type 2 (HSV-2). In the general population, adult seropositivity rates approach 90 % for HSV-1 and 20-25 % for HSV-2. These viruses cause significant morbidity, primarily as mucosal membrane lesions in the form of facial cold sores and genital ulcers, with much less common but more severe manifestations causing death from encephalitis. HSV infections in humans are difficult to study in many cases because many primary infections are asymptomatic. Moreover, the neurotropic properties of HSV make it much more difficult to study the immune mechanisms controlling reactivation of latent infection within the corresponding sensory ganglia and crossover into the central nervous system of infected humans. This is because samples from the nervous system can only be routinely obtained at the time of autopsy. Thus, animal models have been developed whose use has led to a better understanding of multiple aspects of HSV biology, molecular biology, pathogenesis, disease, and immunity. The course of HSV infection in a spectrum of animal models depends on important experimental parameters including animal species, age, and genotype; route of infection; and viral serotype, strain, and dose. This review summarizes the animal models most commonly used to study HSV pathogenesis and its establishment, maintenance, and reactivation from latency. It focuses particularly on the immune response to HSV during acute primary infection and the initial invasion of the ganglion with comparisons to the events governing maintenance of viral latency. ABSTRACT The links between structural glaciology, glacial debris entrainment and transport have been established in a number of different glacier settings. Here we document the structural evolution of a temperate Alpine valley glacier (Vadrec del Forno, Switzerland) and demonstrate that individual flow units within the glacier have very different structural and debris characteristics. The glacier consists of a broad accumulation area with multiple basins feeding a relatively narrow tongue and is formed from six distinct flow units. Each flow unit has its own characteristic structural assemblage. Flow units that narrow rapidly down-glacier are dominated by primary stratification that has evolved into longitudinal foliation. In contrast, wider flow units preferentially develop an axial planar foliation. Glacier structure plays a limited role in the entrainment of debris, which is more strongly influenced by ice-marginal rockfall and avalanche inputs onto the glacier surface. However, once entrained, glacier structure controls the reorientation and redistribution of debris within the ice mass. By taking a whole-glacier approach to describing glacier structure and debris transport, we conclude that individual flow units are unique with regard to structure and debris transfer. Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is capable of causing a latent infection in sensory neurons that lasts for the lifetime of the host. The primary infection is resolved following the induction of the innate immune response that controls replication of the virus until the adaptive immune response can clear the active infection. HSV-1-specific CD8 T cells survey the ganglionic regions containing latently infected neurons and participate in preventing reactivation of HSV from latency. The long-term residence and migration dynamics of the T cells in the trigeminal ganglia appear to distinguish them from the traditional memory T cell subsets. Recently described tissue resident memory (T) T cells establish residence and survive for long periods in peripheral tissue compartments following antigen exposure. This review focuses on the immune system response to HSV-1 infection. Particular emphasis is placed on the evidence pointing to the HSV-1-specific CD8 T cells in the trigeminal belonging to the T class of memory T cells and the role of T cells in virus infection, pathogenesis, latency, and disease. The syndrome of mal de debarquement describes a persisting sensation of motion, following a period of travel. The syndrome is illustrated with three brief case studies. These patients had symptoms for months up to years, resulting in considerable despair and disability. The cases, together with literature review, indicate that once the diagnosis of mal de debarquement syndrome (MDDS) has been recognized, resolution of the symptoms can sometimes be achieved with amitriptyline. The UK chief medical officer's recommendations for the re- licensing and performance management of doctors will mean a move from a formative towards a summative role for appraisal and its adjunct, the personal development plan. Where does this leave medical educators trying to promote reflective learning? It is taken for granted that self-directed learning is the sine qua non of all adult learning. But is it? This review re-evaluates self-directed learning and its corollary, the personal development plan, in the light of the chief medical officer's report, seeking the evidence behind today's accepted educational practice. OBJECTIVE:: Hypercholesterolemia promotes the adhesion of leukocytes to vascular endothelium in large and microscopic blood vessels. Lymphocytes that can modulate endothelial cell adhesion molecule expression have been implicated in the altered structure and function of large arterial vessels associated with chronic hypercholesterolemia. This study assesses the contribution of CD4+ and CD8+ T-cells to acute inflammatory responses observed in the microcirculation of hypercholesterolemic mice. METHODS:: Intravital microscopy was used to quantify baseline leukocyte–endothelial cell interactions in cremasteric postcapillary venules of wild-type (WT) and severe combined immunodeficient (SCID) mice placed on a normal (ND) or high-cholesterol (HC) diet for 2 weeks. A group of SCID-HC mice received splenocytes from WT-HC mice (WT→SCID). Separate WT-HC groups were depleted of neutrophils or CD4+ and/or CD8+ T-cells. RESULTS:: WT-HC mice, compared with WT-ND, exhibited exaggerated leukocyte adherence and emigration. These leukocytes were predominantly granulocytes. These responses were absent in neutropenic WT-HC mice. SCID-HC mice also showed significantly less leukocyte adherence and emigration than WT-HC mice. Elevated leukocyte adherence and emigration were restored in WT→SCID mice, despite a continued absence of circulating blood lymphocytes. Selective depletion of either CD4+ or CD8+ cell populations attenuated HC-induced leukocyte adhesion but not emigration. However, simultaneous depletion of both CD4+ and CD8+ cells attenuated both leukocyte adhesion and emigration to ND levels. Although neutrophils have been implicated in the hepatic injury elicited by gut ischemia/reperfusion (I/R), the contribution of other leukocyte populations to this injury process remains unclear. The objective of this study was to determine whether lymphocytes contribute to gut I/R-induced microvascular dysfunction and inflammatory responses in the liver. Intravital videomicroscopy was used to monitor leukocyte recruitment, the number of nonperfused sinusoids and pyridine nucleotide (NADH) autofluorescence in livers of wild-type, SCID, and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) knockout mice exposed to 15 min of gut ischemia and 1 h of reperfusion. In wild-type mice, gut I/R elicited significant increases in the number of stationary leukocytes, nonperfused sinusoids, NADH autofluorescence (indicating hypoxia), and elevated plasma alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and TNF-α levels. All of these responses were profoundly attenuated in SCID mice, while only some of the responses (in the midzonal region) were blunted in IFN-γ knockout mice. Reconstitution (24 h before ischemia) of the circulating lymphocyte pool with T-cell enriched splenocytes, but not T-cell deficient (from nude mice), CD4[SUP+] T-cell depleted splenocytes or splenocytes derived from IFN-γ knockout mice, allowed the SCID mice to respond to gut I/R in a manner similar to wild-type mice. Some of the responses were restored following reconstitution with CD8[SUP+] T-cell depleted splenocytes. The aim of regional planning is to better manage, or at least influence, the development of a region in the interests of society. Unfortunately much regional planning activity often fails to clear the ‘plan formulation-implementation gap’. Much of the regional planning in Western Australia, with a few notable exceptions, is illustrative of this problem. But recent activity and initiatives in regional planning and development in and for the State suggest that there are some reasons to be hopeful. This paper provides an update on Federal initiatives (partly disturbed by the advent of the Coalition Government), and especially on State initiatives. The latter include, inter alia, the new Regional Development Commissions, Regional Planning activity for country regions, the State Planning Strategy and aspirations for regional empowerment, whole of government and whole of environment approaches. The effect of intrauterine exposure to ethanol on lymphocyte development in the neonatal period was studied in C57BI/6J mice. Mice were bred, and then the female mice were assigned to 1 of 3 diet groups, 25% ethanol-derived calories (EDC), pair-fed control, or ad libitum laboratory chow. At birth, all offspring were cross-fostered to surrogate mothers who had been fed laboratory chow. At weekly intervals, the neonatal mice were weighed, and 4 mice from each group were used to assess the development of splenic lymphocytes. The total number of splenocytes was similar in all three groups at each sampling. The number of T-cells, B-cells, and natural killer (NK) cells was measured by flow cytometry. T-cells and NK cells did not vary significantly among the three diet groups. However, the total number of B-cells was decreased for the first 3 weeks of life in the ethanol-exposed animals. The function of the T-cells and B-cells was determined by assessing the response to lipopolysaccharide, pokeweed mitogen, phytohemagglutinin, and concanavalin A. The response to all four mitogens was significantly reduced in the ethanol-exposed animals and did not recover to control levels until 4-5 weeks of life. Ethanol exposure had no significant effect on the kinetics of acquisition of NK lytic function, as assessed by determining the killing of chromium-51 labeled YAC-1 tumor target cells.
