Background: People with physical disabilities (PWD) participate in less physical activity than people without physical disabilities (PWoD), which increases the risk for several negative health consequences. Comparing physical activity between PWD and PWoD remains a challenge since no reliable and valid survey exists to measure physical activity in both populations. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was adapted to be inclusive of PWD using a recently developed survey adaption framework; however, the adapted IPAQ has not been assessed for reliability and validity. The objective of this study was to assess the reliability and validity of the adapted IPAQ. Methods: To assess test–retest reliability, the adapted IPAQ was completed twice within a 72-hour period by 172 individuals (PWD: n = 102, PWoD: n = 70) and compared using intraclass correlation coefficients. Using Spearman rho, convergent validity and construct validity were assessed in 62 individuals by comparing the adapted IPAQ against the original instrument and activity monitor measured step count, respectively. Results: The adapted IPAQ demonstrated moderate test–retest reliability, with intraclass correlation coefficients of total scores for the total sample of.690 (95% confidence interval [CI].581–.770) and among subgroup analysis (PWD,.640, 95% CI,.457–.761; PWoD,.758, 95% CI,.610–.850). Correlation coefficients were also good for the assessment of convergent validity of total score (.727; 95% CI,.579–.829; P <.001). Construct validity assessment yielded moderate coefficient (.406; 95% CI,.166–.596; P =.001). Chain adsorption to nanofiller interfaces creating bound layers has become central to understanding property changes in polymer nanocomposites. We determine the impact different kinds of adsorbed layers can have on the local glass transition temperature Tg of polymer matrices in a model film system using a localized fluorescence method. This work compares the adsorption and desorption of adsorbed layers grown in solution with the solution washing characteristics of adsorbed layers formed in the melt, leveraging knowledge about polymer adsorption in solution to infer the structure of adsorbed layers formed in the melt. In the limit of zero concentration after a long time in solution, we find that both kinds of adsorbed layers reach the same limiting adsorbed amount h∞(c → 0) ≈ 1 nm, appearing to evolve to the same thermodynamic equilibrium state of a near monolayer of surface coverage. We propose that melt annealing leads to a coarsening of polymer segment–surface contacts, increasing the length of trains and shrinking loops and tails, slowing the subsequent kinetics of these adsorbed chains in solution. Considering how the pyrene-labeled chains intermix with the adsorbed layer enables us to discriminate between the impact of tails, loops, and trains as threading of loops takes longer. We find that large fluffy loops, tails, and trains have little to no impact on the local Tg. A large 30 K increase in local Tg is observed for 30-min solvent washed well-annealed films at long intermixing times that we attribute to the threading of small tight loops. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GPS tags have become a common tool in ecological studies of animal behaviour and demography despite previous research indicating negative impacts on vital rates across a variety of taxa. Many researchers face tradeoffs when deciding whether they are an appropriate tool because GPS tags may impact vital rates, but they provide detailed data on movements and behaviour that often cannot be obtained in other ways. Using band recovery data, we evaluated the strength of effects induced by GPS tags on annual mortality of adult females across 13 waterfowl taxa, and examined whether taxa with a slower life-history strategy and larger body size were more resilient to GPS tag effects than their fast-lived counterparts with small body size. All species were exposed to hunting, which may interact with underlying processes affecting the impact of GPS tags on mortality, but also allowed for robust analysis of overall annual mortality. Hazard ratios, indicating the risk of death for individuals wearing GPS tags compared to those wearing only metal bands, ranged from 1.13 to 3.25 and the mean proportional difference in survival between marker types across species was 0.33. The magnitude of tag effects was surprisingly consistent across life-history tempo and body size, indicating that slower-lived species did not buffer the effect of wearing GPS tags. Our results highlight that even large, long-lived species, which are generally better at buffering their mortality against environmental adversity, are not immune to the effects GPS tags can have on survival and mortality. Drought and pluvial extremes are defined as deviations from typical climatology; however, background climatology can shift over time in a non‐stationary climate, impacting interpretations of extremes. This study evaluated trends in meteorological drought and pluvial extremes by merging tree‐ring reconstructions, observations, and climate‐model simulations spanning 850–2100 CE across North America to determine whether modern and projected future precipitation lies outside the range of natural climate variability. Our results found widespread and spatially consistent exacerbation of drought and pluvial extremes, especially summer drought and winter pluvials, with drying in the west and south, wetting trends in the northeast, and intensification of both extremes across the east and north. Our study suggests that climate change has already shifted precipitation climatology beyond pre‐Industrial climatology and is projected to further intensify ongoing shifts. Plain Language Summary: Managing water resources has become challenging due to the effect of human‐caused climate change on precipitation. This study examines trends in droughts and pluvials from the distant past (850 CE) to the projected future (2100 CE) to determine whether precipitation extremes in the modern, Industrial era and future are beyond what is typical of natural climate variability in North America. Trends were generated by merging information from tree rings, observations, and climate models using a novel statistical approach. Results indicate the widespread intensification of both drought and pluvials–especially summer drought and winter pluvials during the modern and future periods. Spatially, southern and western regions of North America are becoming drier, while the northeast is getting wetter, and central areas of North America show a wider range between drought and pluvial years. Our study suggests that anthropogenic climate change has already modified drought and pluvial extremes beyond natural, pre‐Industrial conditions and these ongoing trends are projected to intensify through the future. Background: Hip fracture surgery under general or spinal anesthesia is a common procedure for older adults in the United States (US). Although spinal or general anesthesia can be appropriate for many patients, and the choice between anesthesia types is preference-sensitive, shared decision-making is not consistently used by anesthesiologists counseling patients on anesthesia for this procedure. We designed an Option Grid™-style conversation aid, My Anesthesia Choice─Hip Fracture, to promote shared decision making in this interaction. This study will refine the aid and evaluate its implementation and effectiveness in clinical practice. Methods: The study will be conducted over 2 phases: qualitative interviews with relevant clinicians and patients to refine the aid, followed by a stepped wedge cluster randomized trial of the intervention at 6 settings in the US. Primary outcomes will include the percentage of eligible patients who receive the intervention (intervention reach) and the change in quality of patient/clinician communication (intervention effectiveness). Secondary outcomes addressing other RE-AIM (reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance) domains will also be collected. Outcomes will be compared between baseline data and an active implementation period and then compared between the active implementation period and a sustainment period. Implementation strategies are guided by three constructs from the Practical, Robust Implementation and Sustainability Model (PRISM): intervention, recipients, and implementation and sustainability infrastructure. Discussion: This is a novel, large-scale trial evaluating and implementing a shared decision-making conversation aid for anesthesia choices. Strong buy-in from site leads and expert advisors will support both the success of implementation and the future dissemination of results and the intervention. Results from this study will inform the broader implementation of this aid for patients with hip fractures and can lead to the development and implementation of similar conversation aids for other anesthesia choices. Durable response to chimeric antigen receptor T (CART) cell therapy remains limited in part due to CART cell exhaustion. Here, we investigate the regulation of CART cell exhaustion with three independent approaches including: a genome-wide CRISPR knockout screen using an in vitro model for exhaustion, RNA and ATAC sequencing on baseline and exhausted CART cells, and RNA and ATAC sequencing on pre-infusion CART cell products from responders and non-responders in the ZUMA-1 clinical trial. Each of these approaches identify interleukin (IL)-4 as a regulator of CART cell dysfunction. Further, IL-4-treated CD8+ CART cells develop signs of exhaustion independently of the presence of CD4+ CART cells. Conversely, IL-4 pathway editing or the combination of CART cells with an IL-4 monoclonal antibody improves antitumor efficacy and reduces signs of CART cell exhaustion in mantle cell lymphoma xenograft mouse models. Therefore, we identify both a role for IL-4 in inducing CART exhaustion and translatable approaches to improve CART cell therapy. The application and therapeutic success of CAR-T cell approaches are limited by the development of T cell exhaustion. Background: Lyme borreliosis (LB), caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bbsl), is the most common tick-borne disease in Europe. Although public health surveillance for LB has been conducted in Romania since 2007, the extent of under-detection of Bbsl infections by LB surveillance has not been estimated. We therefore estimated the under-detection of symptomatic Bbsl infections by LB surveillance to better understand the LB burden in Romania. Methods: The number of incident symptomatic Bbsl infections were estimated from a seroprevalence study conducted in six counties (population 2.3 M) and estimates of the symptomatic proportion and duration of persistence of anti-Bbsl immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies. The number of incident symptomatic Bbsl infections were compared with the number of surveillance-reported LB cases to derive an under-detection multiplier, and then the under-detection multiplier was applied to LB surveillance data to estimate the incidence of symptomatic Bbsl infection from 2018 to 2023. Results: We estimate that there were 1968 individuals with incident symptomatic Bbsl infection in the six counties where the seroprevalence study was conducted in 2020, compared with the 187 surveillance-reported LB cases, resulting in an under-detection multiplier of 10.5 (i.e., for every surveillance-reported LB case, there were 10.5 symptomatic incident Bbsl infections). The incidence of symptomatic Bbsl infection in the six counties was 86.9/100,000 population in 2023, similar to the incidence in 2018−2020 (86.0) and higher than in 2021−2022 (40.3). Conclusions: There is a higher incidence of symptomatic Bbsl infection than is reported through public health surveillance for LB in Romania. Elemental iron powders are used as food fortificants to reduce the incidence of iron deficiency anemia. However, many commercially available iron powders are relatively untested in vivo. The purpose of this study was to determine the hemoglobin regeneration efficiency (HRE) and relative iron bioavailability (RBV) of an electrolytic elemental iron powder (EIP), by treating anemic rats with 14 d iron repletion diets fortified with four different concentrations (12, 24, 36, or 48 mg iron/kg diet) of EIP and bakery-grade ferrous sulfate monohydrate (FS; FeSO4•H2O), or no added iron (control); n = 9–12/group. The HRE of FS was significantly higher (p ≤ 0.05) than EIP at each concentration of dietary iron tested. For EIP, the HREs (ratios) of diets containing 12, 24, 36, and 48 mg iron/kg were 0.356, 0.205, 0.197, and 0.163, respectively. For both EIP and FS, HRE was inversely associated with increasing dietary iron. The RBVs (%) of iron from EIP in diets at 12, 24, 36, and 48 mg iron/kg as compared to FS were 64.5, 59.1, 50.6, and 54.3%, respectively. Overall, findings show that at the concentrations of iron tested, EIP has RBVs greater than 50% and is an effective fortification agent to replenish hemoglobin and correct iron deficiency anemia. São Paulo, Brazil, and Florida, USA, were the two major orange production areas in the world until Huanglongbing (HLB) was discovered in São Paulo in 2004 and Florida in 2005. In the absence of resistant citrus varieties, HLB is the most destructive citrus disease known because of the lack of effective tools to reduce spread of the vector, Diaphorina citri (Asian citrus psyllid), and transmission of the associated pathogen, Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus. In both countries, a three-pronged management approach was recommended and begun: planting only disease-free nursery trees, effective psyllid control, and removal of all symptomatic trees. In Brazil, these management procedures were continued and improved and resulted in relatively little overall loss of production. In contrast, in Florida the citrus industry has been devastated with annual production reduced by approximately 80%. This review compares and contrasts various cultural and pest management strategies that have been used to reduce infection by the pathogen and increase tolerance of HLB in the main orange-growing regions in the world. Advances in technology have transformed healthcare and laboratory medicine. Biosensors have emerged as a promising technology in healthcare, providing a way to monitor human physiological parameters in a continuous, real-time, and non-intrusive manner and offering value and benefits in a wide range of applications. This position statement aims to present the current situation around biosensors, their perspectives and importantly the need to set the framework for their validation and safe use. The development of a qualification framework for biosensors should be conceptually adopted and extended to cover digitally measured biomarkers from biosensors for advancing healthcare and achieving more individualized patient management and better patient outcome. Introduction: Contrary to stereotypes, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians are more likely to abstain from drinking than other Australians. We explored characteristics and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians who do not drink alcohol. Method: We conducted a cross‐sectional, representative survey of 775 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians (16+ years) in remote and urban South Australia. We explore correlates of not drinking alcohol using multi‐level logistic regression. We describe reasons for non‐drinking and harms participants experienced in past 12 months from others' drinking. Results: Non‐drinking participants were more likely to be older (OR 1.35 [95% CI 1.21, 1.50] per decade) and unemployed (OR 2.72 [95% CI 1.77, 4.20]). Participants who spoke Aboriginal Australian languages at home were three times more likely to be lifetime abstainers from drinking (OR 3.07 [95% CI 1.52, 6.21]). Common reasons for not drinking alcohol were health and family. Most did not report harms from others' alcohol consumption (79.6%, 76.9%, urban and remote respectively). Stress from others' alcohol consumption was the most reported harm by non‐drinkers (14.5% and 23.1%, urban and remote, respectively). Discussion and Conclusions: Culture such as speaking Aboriginal Australian languages might have protective effects that promote abstaining but was rarely explicitly cited as a reason for not drinking. A greater understanding of local values held by people who do not drink alcohol could help inform health messaging and other interventions to reduce alcohol‐related harms. SUMMARY: Weeds in agricultural settings continually adapt to stresses from ecological and anthropogenic sources, in some cases leading to resistant populations. However, consequences of repeated sub‐lethal exposure of these stressors on fitness and stress "memory" over generations remain poorly understood. We measured plant performance over a transgenerational experiment with Arabidopsis thaliana where plants were exposed to sub‐lethal stress induced by the herbicides glyphosate or trifloxysulfuron, stresses from clipping or shading in either one (G1) or four successive generations (G1–G4), and control plants that never received stress. We found that fourth‐generation (G4) plants that had been subjected to three generations of glyphosate or trifloxysulfuron stress produced higher post‐stress biomass, seed weight, and rosette area as compared to that produced by plants that experienced stress only in the first generation (G1). By the same measure, clipping and shade were more influential on floral development time (shade) and seed weight (clipping) but did not show responsive phenotypes for vegetative metrics after multiple generations. Overall, we found that plants exhibited more rapid transgenerational vegetative "stress memory" to herbicides while reproductive plasticity was stressor dependent and similar between clipping/shade and anthropogenic stressors. Our study suggests that maternal plant stress memory aids next‐generation plants to respond and survive better under the same stressors. Objectives: To investigate the effect of emotion regulation skills‐focused (ERSF) interventions to reduce pain intensity and improve psychological outcomes for people with chronic pain and to narratively report on safety and intervention compliance. Methods: Six databases and four registries were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) up to 29 April 2022. Risk of bias was evaluated using the Cochrane RoB 2.0 tool, and certainty of evidence was assessed according to the Grading, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE). Meta‐analyses for eight studies (902 participants) assessed pain intensity (primary outcome), emotion regulation, affect, symptoms of depression and anxiety, and pain interference (secondary outcomes), at two time points when available, post‐intervention (closest to intervention end) and follow‐up (the first measurement after the post‐intervention assessment). Results: Compared to TAU, pain intensity improved post‐intervention (weighted mean difference [WMD] = −10.86; 95% confidence interval [CI] [−17.55, −2.56]) and at follow‐up (WMD = −11.38; 95% CI [−13.55, −9.21]). Emotion regulation improved post‐intervention (standard mean difference [SMD] = 0.57; 95% CI [0.14, 1.01]), and depressive symptoms improved at follow‐up (SMD = −0.45; 95% CI [−0.66, −0.24]). Compared to active comparators, anxiety symptoms improved favouring the comparator post‐intervention (SMD = 0.10; 95% CI [0.03, 0.18]), and compared to CBT, pain interference improved post‐intervention (SMD = −0.37; 95% CI [−0.69, −0.04]). Certainty of evidence ranged from very low to moderate. Significance: The findings provide evidence that ERSF interventions reduce pain intensity for people with chronic pain compared to usual treatment. These interventions are at least as beneficial to reduce pain intensity as the current gold standard psychological intervention, CBT. However, the limited number of studies and certainty of evidence mean further high‐quality RCTs are warranted. COVID-19 can cause ongoing and persistent symptoms (such as breathlessness and fatigue) that lead to reduced functional capacity. There are parallels in symptoms and functional limitations in adults with post-COVID symptoms and adults with chronic respiratory diseases. Pulmonary rehabilitation is a key treatment for adults with chronic respiratory diseases, with the aims to improve symptom management and increase functional capacity. Given the similarities in presentation and aims, a pulmonary rehabilitation program may be optimal to meet the needs of those with ongoing symptoms after COVID-19. Aerobic and strength training has shown benefit for adults living with long COVID, although there is little evidence on structured education in this population. Breathing pattern disorder is common in adults with long COVID, and considerations on treatment before rehabilitation, or alongside rehabilitation, are necessary. Considerations on postexertional malaise are important in this population, and evidence from the chronic fatigue syndrome literature supports the need for individualization of exercise programs, and considerations for those who have an adverse reaction to activity and/or exercise. This narrative review summarizes the current evidence on pulmonary rehabilitation programs in a long-COVID population. Where the evidence is lacking in long COVID the supporting evidence of these programs in chronic respiratory diseases has highlighted the importance of aerobic and strength training, considerations for fatigue, potential mechanisms for immunology improvement, and management of breathing pattern disorders in these programs. Background: Clozapine is the only recommended antipsychotic medication for individuals diagnosed with treatment-resistant schizophrenia. Unfortunately, its wider use is hindered by several possible adverse effects, some of which are rare but potentially life threatening. As such, there is a growing interest in studying clozapine use and safety in routinely collected healthcare data. However, previous attempts to characterise clozapine treatment have had low accuracy. Aim: To develop a methodology for identifying clozapine treatment dates by combining several data sources and implement this on a large clinical database. Methods: Non-identifiable electronic health records from a large mental health provider in London and a linked database from a national clozapine blood monitoring service were used to obtain information regarding patients' clozapine treatment status, blood tests and pharmacy dispensing records. A rule-based algorithm was developed to determine the dates of starting and stopping treatment based on these data, and more than 10% of the outcomes were validated by manual review of de-identified case note text. Results: A total of 3,212 possible clozapine treatment periods were identified, of which 425 (13.2%) were excluded due to insufficient data to verify clozapine administration. Of the 2,787 treatments remaining, 1,902 (68.2%) had an identified start-date. On evaluation, the algorithm identified treatments with 96.4% accuracy; start dates were 96.2% accurate within 15 days, and end dates were 85.1% accurate within 30 days. Conclusions: The algorithm produced a reliable database of clozapine treatment periods. The ability of analytical strategies to detect and positively identify molecules under extremely dilute conditions is important for the growth and expansion of analytical techniques and instrumentation. At present, few measurement science techniques can robustly approach the measurement of just a few thousand molecules. Here, we present an electrochemical platform for the detection and positive identification of fewer than 1000 molecules of decamethylferrocene ((Cp*)2FeII). We achieve this remarkable detection threshold by trapping (Cp*)2FeII in a 1,2-dichloroethane microdroplet, which is allowed to dissolve into an aqueous continuous phase while on a gold microelectrode (radius ∼6.25 μm). Because electrochemistry is not sensitive enough to observe the charge of less than 1000 molecules, we dissolved μM amounts hexacyanoferrate(III) in the aqueous continuous phase. The biphasic reaction between hexacyanoferrate(III) and Cp2*(Fe)II allows for a feedback loop when the microelectrode is biased sufficiently negative to reduce Cp2*(Fe)III. This feedback loop, a typical EC′ catalytic mechanism, amplifies the electrochemical signal of Cp2*(Fe)II when the droplet is of small enough dimensions for feedback to occur. Our results demonstrate that clever biphasic reactions can be coupled with dissolving microdroplets to access extremely low limits of quantitation in electroanalysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ozone (O3) is an important secondary pollutant that impacts air quality and human health. Eastern Asia has high regional O3 background due to the numerous sources and increasing and rapid industrial growth, which also impacts the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA). However, the SMA has also been experiencing increasing O3 driven by decreasing NOx emissions, highlighting the role of the local in situ O3 production on the SMA. Here, comprehensive gas-phase measurements collected on the NASA DC-8 during the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER)/NASA Korea–United States Air Quality (KORUS-AQ) study are used to constrain the instantaneous O3 production rate over the SMA. The observed NOx oxidized products support the importance of non-measured peroxy nitrates (PNs) in the O3 chemistry in the SMA, as they accounted for ∼49 % of the total PNs. Using the total measured PNs (Σ PNs) and alkyl and multifunctional nitrates (Σ ANs), unmeasured volatile organic compound (VOC) reactivity (R(VOC)) is constrained and found to range from 1.4–2.1 s-1. Combining the observationally constrained R(VOC) with the other measurements on the DC-8, the instantaneous net O3 production rate, which is as high as ∼10 ppbvh-1 , along with the important sinks of O3 and radical chemistry, is constrained. This analysis shows that Σ PNs play an important role in both the sinks of O3 and radical chemistry. Since Σ PNs are assumed to be in a steady state, the results here highlight the role that Σ PNs play in urban environments in altering the net O3 production, but Σ PNs can potentially lead to increased net O3 production downwind due to their short lifetime (∼1 h). The fraction of urban volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions attributable to fossil fuel combustion has been declining in many parts of the world, resulting in a need to better constrain other anthropogenic sources of these emissions. During the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Korea-United States Air Quality (KORUS-AQ) field study in Seoul, South Korea, during May–June 2016, air quality models underestimated ozone, formaldehyde, and peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN), indicating an underestimate of VOCs in the emissions inventory. Here, we use aircraft observations interpreted with the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model (version 13.4.0) to assess the need for increases in VOC emissions and for a revised chemical mechanism to improve treatment of VOC speciation and chemistry. We find that the largest needed VOC emissions increases are attributable to compounds associated with volatile chemical products, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and natural gas emissions, and long-range transport. Revising model chemistry to better match observed VOC speciation together with increasing model emissions of underestimated VOC species increased calculated OH reactivity by + 2 s -1 and ozone production by + 2 ppb h -1. Ozone increased by + 6 ppb below 2 km and + 9 ppb at the surface, and formaldehyde and acetaldehyde increased by + 30 % and + 120 % aloft, respectively, all in better agreement with observations. The larger increase in acetaldehyde was attributed to ethanol emissions, which we found to be as important for ozone production as isoprene or alkenes. The increased acetaldehyde significantly reduced the model PAN bias. The need for additional unmeasured VOCs, however, was indicated by a remaining model bias of - 0.8 ppb in formaldehyde and a - 57 % and - 52 % underestimate in higher peroxynitrates (PNs) and alkyl nitrates (ANs), respectively. We added additional chemistry to the model to represent an additional six PNs from observed VOCs but were unable to account for the majority of missing PNs. However, four of these PNs were modeled at concentrations similar to other commonly measured PNs (> 2 % of PAN) indicating that these should be measured in future campaigns and considered from other VOC emission sources (e.g., fires). We hypothesize that emissions of oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs) such as ≥ C5 aldehydes from cooking and/or alkenes associated with volatile chemical products could produce both PNs and ANs and improve remaining model biases. Polar van der Waals (vdW) crystals, composed of atomic layers held together by vdW forces, can host phonon polaritons—quasiparticles arising from the interaction between photons in free-space light and lattice vibrations in polar materials. These crystals offer advantages such as easy fabrication, low Ohmic loss, and optical confinement. Recently, hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), known for having hyperbolicity in the mid-infrared range, has been used to explore multiple modes with high optical confinement. This opens possibilities for practical polaritonic nanodevices with subdiffractional resolution. However, polariton waves still face exposure to the surrounding environment, leading to significant energy losses. In this work, we propose a simple approach to inducing a hyperbolic phonon polariton (HPhP) waveguide in hBN by incorporating a low dielectric medium, ZrS2. The low dielectric medium serves a dual purpose—it acts as a pathway for polariton propagation, while inducing high optical confinement. We establish the criteria for the HPhP waveguide in vdW heterostructures with various thicknesses of ZrS2 through scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) and by conducting numerical electromagnetic simulations. Purpose: Many factors contribute to persisting post-concussion symptoms (PPCSs), necessitating multi-modal treatment. Quantitative investigations have shown the potential of interdisciplinary intervention to reduce the burden of PPCSs and facilitate return to activities. There are often varied responses to intervention, warranting further investigation of potential factors underlying treatment response. This study aimed to explore participant experiences of i-RECOveR, an interdisciplinary intervention for PPCSs and its impact on symptoms, daily function, and concussion beliefs. Materials and Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted 1-month post-treatment via videoconferencing with 13 individuals (61% female) with mild traumatic brain injury (Mage=39.77 years, SD = 16.27) who participated in i-RECOveR. Interview transcripts were analysed thematically. Results: Three themes reflected participants' treatment journeys from concussion to life after treatment: (1) Dissatisfaction with Previous Consultations, reflected personal experiences prior to commencing treatment; (2) Perceived Active Ingredients of Intervention, reflected participant experiences of i-RECOveR; and (3) Impact of Interdisciplinary Intervention, reflected a range of positive changes after completing i-RECOveR. Conclusions: Findings highlight current gaps in the acute management of concussion and provide end-user insights into the facilitators and barriers of treatment engagement and response. Responses also highlight the potential positive impact of interdisciplinary treatments. Clinician perspectives should be explored in future research. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: Access to additional training in concussion care and referral pathways may help medical practitioners manage patients after concussion. Clinicians working with individuals with persisting post-concussion symptoms should develop an understanding of the individual's perceived control over their symptoms, and work with them toward increasing autonomy and control and recognition that symptoms are often multifactorial in nature. Persisting post-concussion symptom rehabilitation may be improved by taking an interdisciplinary approach that is integrated individualised, and is specialised for concussion. Telehealth and hybrid treatment models are well tolerated by individuals with persisting post-concussion symptoms and may facilitate treatment engagement, especially for individuals with mild traumatic brain injury who report disabling symptoms made worse by travelling to in-person treatments. The Venus flytrap, Dionaea muscipula, is perhaps the world's best-known botanical carnivore. The act of prey capture and digestion along with its rapidly closing, charismatic traps make this species a compelling model for studying the evolution and fundamental biology of carnivorous plants. There is a growing body of research on the genome, transcriptome, and digestome of Dionaea muscipula, but surprisingly limited information on changes in trap transcript abundance over time since feeding. Here we present the results of a comparative transcriptomics project exploring the transcriptomic changes across seven timepoints in a 72-hour time series of prey digestion and three timepoints directly comparing triggered traps with and without prey items. We document a dynamic response to prey capture including changes in abundance of transcripts with Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to digestion and nutrient uptake. Comparisons of traps with and without prey documented 174 significantly differentially expressed genes at 1 hour after triggering and 151 genes with significantly different abundances at 24 hours. Approximately 50% of annotated protein-coding genes in Venus flytrap genome exhibit change (10041 of 21135) in transcript abundance following prey capture. Whereas peak abundance for most of these genes was observed within 3 hours, an expression cluster of 3009 genes exhibited continuously increasing abundance over the 72-hour sampling period, and transcript for these genes with GO annotation terms including both catabolism and nutrient transport may continue to accumulate beyond 72 hours. Background: Cigar use among adults in the United States has remained relatively stable in the past decade and occupies a growing part of the tobacco marketplace as cigarette use has declined. While studies have established the detrimental respiratory health effects of cigarette use, the effects of cigar use need further characterization. In this study, we evaluate the prospective association between cigar use, with or without cigarettes, and asthma exacerbation. Methods: We used data from Waves 1–5 (2013–2019) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study to run generalized estimating equation models examining the association between time-varying, one-wave-lagged cigarette and cigar use and self-reported asthma exacerbation among US adults (18+). We defined our exposure as non-established (reference), former, exclusive cigarette, exclusive cigar, and dual use. We defined an asthma exacerbation event as a reported asthma attack in the past 12 months necessitating oral or injected steroid medication or asthma symptoms disrupting sleep at least once a week in the past 30 days. We adjusted for age, sex, race and ethnicity, household income, health insurance, established electronic nicotine delivery systems use, cigarette pack-years, secondhand smoke exposure, obesity, and baseline asthma exacerbation. Results: Exclusive cigarette use (incidence rate ratio (IRR): 1.26, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.03–1.54) and dual use (IRR: 1.41, 95% CI: 1.08–1.85) were associated with a higher rate of asthma exacerbation compared to non-established use, while former use (IRR: 1.01, 95% CI: 0.80–1.28) and exclusive cigar use (IRR: 0.70, 95% CI: 0.42–1.17) were not. Conclusion: We found no association between exclusive cigar use and self-reported asthma exacerbation. However, exclusive cigarette use and dual cigarette and cigar use were associated with higher incidence rates of self-reported asthma exacerbation compared to non-established use. In this review and synthesis, we argue that California is an important test case for the nation and world because terrestrial biodiversity is very high, present and anticipated threats to biodiversity from climate change and other interacting stressors are severe, and innovative approaches to protecting biodiversity in the context of climate change are being developed and tested. We first review salient dimensions of California's terrestrial physical, biological, and human diversity. Next, we examine four facets of the threat to their sustainability of these dimensions posed by climate change: direct impacts, illustrated by a new analysis of shifting diversity hotspots for plants; interactive effects involving invasive species, land-use change, and other stressors; the impacts of changing fire regimes; and the impacts of land-based renewable energy development. We examine recent policy responses in each of these areas, representing attempts to better protect biodiversity while advancing climate adaptation and mitigation. We conclude that California's ambitious 30 × 30 Initiative and its efforts to harmonize biodiversity conservation with renewable energy development are important areas of progress. The evolution of flight in an early winged insect ancestral lineage is recognized as a key adaptation explaining the unparalleled success and diversification of insects. Subsequent transitions and modifications to flight machinery, including secondary reductions and losses, also play a central role in shaping the impacts of insects on broadscale geographic and ecological processes and patterns in the present and future. Given the importance of insect flight, there has been a centuries-long history of research and debate on the evolutionary origins and biological mechanisms of flight. Here, we revisit this history from an interdisciplinary perspective, discussing recent discoveries regarding the developmental origins, physiology, biomechanics, and neurobiology and sensory control of flight in a diverse set of insect models. We also identify major outstanding questions yet to be addressed and provide recommendations for overcoming current methodological challenges faced when studying insect flight, which will allow the field to continue to move forward in new and exciting directions. By integrating mechanistic work into ecological and evolutionary contexts, we hope that this synthesis promotes and stimulates new interdisciplinary research efforts necessary to close the many existing gaps about the causes and consequences of insect flight evolution. Qualities of effective teachers matter because teachers are the number one school-related factor that impacts on student achievement. Although researchers in the United States have studied frameworks for evaluating teacher effectiveness, these frameworks are not focused on teachers working in international schools. Thus, they may not reflect the importance of understanding both the context of working in intercultural settings and the skills that allow teachers to flourish in international schools. Using a systematic configurative synthesis review of 23 studies, this study identifies qualities of effective teachers working in international schools through a synthesis of the study findings. We identified four key attributes that are emphasized, if not unique, in international school effective teacher research: a focus on teacher collaboration and teacher leadership; cultural awareness and responsiveness from multi-national perspectives; and host country language acquisition. Overall, we find that a focus on what makes an effective international school teacher is lacking in the extant research, particularly given the predicted enormous growth of international schools. Purpose: Septic arthritis is a dangerous medical condition requiring prompt diagnosis, often via arthrocentesis. A "dry tap" occurs when no fluid is aspirated. We hypothesized that the absence of a joint effusion on pre-procedure advanced imaging would reliably predict a dry tap and exclude septic arthritis. Methods: A cohort of 217 arthrocentesis cases of large joints (hips, shoulders, knees) from our institution, with pre-procedure advanced imaging (CT, MR, US) of the same joint performed within the previous 48 h, was analyzed. Exclusion criteria included non-native joints or inadequate imaging of the affected joint. These cases underwent blinded review by 4 radiologists who measured the deepest pocket of joint fluid on the pre-procedure imaging. Wilcoxon rank-sum test was performed comparing joint fluid pocket size to outcomes of successful aspiration and final diagnosis. Results: A smaller average joint pocket fluid size was present on advanced imaging in both dry taps compared with successful arthrocenteses (p <.0001), and in uninfected joints compared with septic joints (p =.0001). However, the overlap of values was too great to allow for a perfectly predictive cutoff. 29% (5/17) of patients with no visible joint fluid on pre-aspiration imaging underwent successful arthrocentesis, one case representing septic arthritis. Conclusion: Volume of joint fluid on advanced pre-arthrocentesis imaging cannot reliably predict subsequent dry tap nor exclude septic arthritis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Effective volcanic impact and risk assessment underpins effective volcanic disaster risk management. Yet contemporary volcanic risk assessments face a number of challenges, including delineating hazard and impact sequences, and identifying and quantifying systemic risks. A more holistic approach to impact assessment is required, which incorporates the complex, multi-hazard nature of volcanic eruptions and the dynamic nature of vulnerability before, during and after a volcanic event. Addressing this need requires a multidisciplinary, integrated approach, involving scientists and stakeholders to co-develop decision-support tools that are scientifically credible and operationally relevant to provide a foundation for robust, evidence-based risk reduction decisions. This study presents a dynamic, longitudinal impact assessment framework for multi-phase, multi-hazard volcanic events and applies the framework to interdependent critical infrastructure networks in the Taranaki region of Aotearoa New Zealand, where Taranaki Mounga volcano has a high likelihood of producing a multi-phase explosive eruption within the next 50 years. In the framework, multi-phase scenarios temporally alternate multi-hazard footprints with risk reduction opportunities. Thus, direct and cascading impacts and any risk management actions carry through to the next phase of activity. The framework forms a testbed for more targeted mitigation and response planning and allows the investigation of optimal intervention timing for mitigation strategies during an evolving eruption. Using 'risk management' scenarios, we find the timing of mitigation intervention to be crucial in reducing disaster losses associated with volcanic activity. This is particularly apparent in indirect, systemic losses that cascade from direct damage to infrastructure assets. This novel, dynamic impact assessment approach addresses the increasing end-user need for impact-based decision-support tools that inform robust response and resilience planning. The Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management (JWRPM) launched a Reproducibility Review Program in 2020 to address the lack of reproducibility in water-related journals. The program encourages authors to publish data, models, code, and directions with their articles so that independent reviewers can replicate their work. The program has five objectives, including promoting reproducibility, facilitating the use of reproducible work, and recognizing authors who make their work more reproducible. The program has already awarded Silver and Bronze badges to several manuscripts and plans to expand to other journals. Challenges include incorporating reproducibility reviews into the submission process and educating authors about the program. Aims: A growing number of Lyme disease (LD) cases in the U.S. are reported in states neighbouring those with high‐incidence (>10 cases per 100,000 population) rates. Considering the evolving epidemiology, high‐incidence counties in many of these "neighbouring states," and the forthcoming vaccines, understanding the drivers of vaccination intention is critical, particularly how drivers of intention in neighbouring states vary relative to regions currently classified as high incidence. This study uses the Health Belief Model (HBM) to determine the key drivers associated with vaccine intention for U.S. adults and caregivers of children residing in neighbouring states. Methods and Results: Using an established panel with quotas for age, sex, race/ethnicity and urbanity, we surveyed 887 adults and 822 caregivers of children residing in U.S. neighbouring states. Survey items included measures of intention and HBM constructs, all of which were assessed using 5‐point Likert scales. We subsequently used structural equation modelling to understand the influence of the HBM constructs on LD vaccine intention. Estimates from structural equation modelling show that the HBM constructs explain much of the variation in intention to vaccinate against LD. Intentions to vaccinate for both adults and caregivers are positively influenced by cues to action, perceived susceptibility of LD, and perceived benefits to vaccination. Both are also negatively influenced by perceived barriers to vaccination. The caregiver's intention to vaccinate is also positively influenced by the perceived severity of LD. Conclusion: The intention to vaccinate for respondents residing in LD neighbouring states is strongly influenced by recommendations from healthcare providers or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As incidence rises in neighbouring states and the need to prevent disease becomes more overt, public health officials should strongly recognize the influence of healthcare providers and CDC recommendations on intention to vaccinate against LD. Introduction: Lyme disease (LD), caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, is the most common vector‐borne disease in the United States. Although most surveillance‐reported cases are in people who are White, data suggest worse outcomes among people from racial and ethnic minority groups. Methods: We conducted a systematic literature review to describe racial disparities in LD. We described the epidemiology of LD by race and ethnicity, including clinical presentation at diagnosis, and summarised the literature on knowledge, attitudes and practices related to LD and ticks by race and ethnicity. Results: Overall, the incidence and prevalence of LD were 1.2–3.5 times higher in White persons than in persons who identified as Asian or Pacific Islander and 4.5–6.3 times higher in White persons than in persons who identified as Black. Across multiple studies, people from racial and ethnic minority groups were more likely than White people to have disseminated manifestations of LD, including neurological manifestations and arthritis, and less likely to have erythema migrans. People from racial and ethnic minority groups were also more likely to report disease onset in the fall and less likely to report disease onset in the summer. Possible reasons for these disparities include lack of recognition of the disease in people with darker skin tones, lack of knowledge of disease risk for some groups and differences in exposure risk. Conclusions: Taken together, these results reinforce that all people residing in high‐incidence areas are at risk of LD, regardless of race or ethnicity. BACKGROUND: The Lancet Low Back Pain (LBP) Series highlighted the lack of LBP data from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The study aimed to describe (1) what LBP care is currently delivered in LMICs and (2) how that care is delivered. DESIGN: An online mixed-methods study. METHODS: A Consortium for LBP in LMICs (n = 65) was developed with an expert panel of leading LBP researchers (>2 publications on LBP) and multidisciplinary clinicians and patient partners with 5 years of clinical/lived LBP experience in LMICs. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Two researchers independently analyzed qualitative data using inductive and deductive coding and developed a thematic framework. RESULTS: Forty-seven (85%) of 55 invited panel members representing 32 LMICs completed the survey (38% women, 62% men). The panel included clinicians (34%), researchers (28%), educators (6%), and people with lived experience (4%). Pharmacotherapies and electrophysiological agents were the most used LBP treatments. The thematic framework comprised 8 themes: (1) self-management is ubiquitous, (2) medicines are the cornerstone, (3) traditional therapies have a place, (4) society plays an important role, (5) imaging use is very common, (6) reliance on passive approaches, (7) social determinants influence LBP care pathway, and (8) health systems are ill-prepared to address LBP burden. CONCLUSION: LBP care in LMICs did not consistently align with the best available evidence. Findings will help research prioritization in LMICs and guide global LBP clinical guidelines. Vegetation absorption is one major form of carbon storage. The earliest spatial distribution of the Net Primary Production (NPP), an index to estimate how much carbon is absorbed, could extend back to the 1980s from satellite imagery. Our study reconstructed a time series annual NPP maps in the southern Indiana since 1940 with point‐by‐point regression models and ring‐width index (RWI) from 16 tree‐ring chronologies. Our RWI‐NPP model had a good performance using Random Forest (RF) regression comprehensively considering both normal and dry years. The RWI‐NPP model performance gap between forest and grassland is acceptable. We also found that the tendency (model of the tendency = −0.50) based on the combination of real NPP data and simulated NPP data were opposite to the one (slope = 18.70) only based on real NPP data where the extended data set could correct some bias caused by limited data. There is a huge NPP fluctuation in the recent years (2010–2013) which is highly likely to be caused by the combination of higher frequency of extreme climate events and the intensive land‐use and land‐cover change. We assume that most of the vegetation pixels had the same growing pattern with the plot in Morgan Monroe Flux Tower whose dominant species is ACSH (35.66%) or the plot in Hoot Woods whose dominant species is FRAM (34.41%). This study is novel in the assessment of the spatial distribution patterns of NPP since 1940. We can witness how the NPP changes within the last 70 years. Plain Language Summary: Net Primary Productivity (NPP) is the amount of carbon retained in the plant which is an important index to estimating carbon sequestration of forest. But current NPP satellite images can only trace back to 1980s which indicated that we do not know the spatial distribution of NPP 40 years ago. But monitoring the carbon storage and climate change need a long term data. We tried three models (Random forest, Support Vector Machine, and Principal Component Regression) to reconstruct the annual NPP images in the southern Indiana since 1940 using tree rings. We found out that the random forest had a good performance on NPP reconstruction. The NPP showed a decreasing trend from 1940 to 2013. Many vegetation pixels had similar growing pattern with the Acer saccharinum and Fraxinus americana. As government documents, postage stamps are a rich source of information about a government's policies on a wide range of subjects. In this article, a comparative semiotic analysis of the first seventy-five years of North and South Korean stamps is used to illustrate the similarities and differences in their attitudes towards 'religion' and religious practice. A corpus of stamps on a 'religious' theme was created for stamps issued by both governments from which a series of themes and motifs was noted. The semiotic analysis of the themes and motifs showed that while on South Korean stamps Buddhist motifs constituted the majority of stamps commemorating cultural history, there were few references to the commemoration of Buddhism itself. The reverse was found to be true for Christianity. Although Christianity was not shown to be a major expression of Korean culture, Christianity itself was commemorated extensively. On North Korean stamps, folklore and Christian motifs predominated as projections of cultural history, but the Christian motifs referred only to foreign cultures, not Korean culture. Motifs relating to the foundation myth of Tan'gun were common to both North and South Korea. Social factors and psychological characteristics can influence selection and development in talent pathways. However, the interaction between these two factors is relatively unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the implications of socioeconomic status and psychological characteristics in English academy soccer players (n = 58; aged 11 to 16 years). To assess socioeconomic status, participants' home postcodes were coded according to each individual's social classification and credit rating, applying the UK General Registrar Classification system and CameoTM geodemographic database, respectively. Participants also completed the six factor Psychological Characteristics for Developing Excellence Questionnaire (PCDEQ). A classification of 'higher-potentials' (n = 19) and 'lower-potentials' (n = 19) were applied through coach potential rankings. Data were standardised using z-scores to eliminate age bias and data were analysed using independent sample t-tests. Results showed that higher-potentials derived from families with significantly lower social classifications (p = 0.014) and reported higher levels for PCDEQ Factor 3 (coping with performance and developmental pressures) (p = 0.007) compared to lower-potentials. This study can be used to support the impetus for researchers and practitioners to consider the role of social factors and psychological characteristics when selecting and developing sporting talent. Accessing the low-energy non-equilibrium dynamics of materials and their polaritons with simultaneous high spatial and temporal resolution has been a bold frontier of electron microscopy in recent years. One of the main challenges lies in the ability to retrieve extremely weak signals and simultaneously disentangling the amplitude and phase information. Here we present free-electron Ramsey imaging—a microscopy approach based on light-induced electron modulation that enables the coherent amplification of optical near fields in electron imaging. We provide simultaneous time-, space- and phase-resolved measurements of a micro-drum made from a hexagonal boron nitride membrane, visualizing the sub-cycle dynamics of two-dimensional polariton wavepackets therein. The phase-resolved measurement reveals vortex–anti-vortex singularities on the polariton wavefronts, together with an intriguing phenomenon of a travelling wave mimicking the amplitude profile of a standing wave. Our experiments show a 20-fold coherent amplification of the near-field signal compared with conventional electron near-field imaging, resolving peak field intensities in the order of a few watts per square centimetre, corresponding to field amplitudes of a few kilovolts per metre. As a result, our work paves the way for the spatiotemporal electron microscopy of biological specimens and quantum materials, exciting yet delicate samples that are currently difficult to investigate. Objective: The long‐term consequences of traumatic brain injury (TBI) on brain structure remain uncertain. Given evidence that a single significant brain injury event increases the risk of dementia, brain‐age estimation could provide a novel and efficient indexing of the long‐term consequences of TBI. Brain‐age procedures use predictive modeling to calculate brain‐age scores for an individual using structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. Complicated mild, moderate, and severe TBI (cmsTBI) is associated with a higher predicted age difference (PAD), but the progression of PAD over time remains unclear. We sought to examine whether PAD increases as a function of time since injury (TSI) and if injury severity and sex interacted to influence this progression. Methods: Through the ENIGMA Adult Moderate and Severe (AMS)‐TBI working group, we examine the largest TBI sample to date (n = 343), along with controls, for a total sample size of n = 540, to replicate and extend prior findings in the study of TBI brain age. Cross‐sectional T1w‐MRI data were aggregated across 7 cohorts, and brain age was established using a similar brain age algorithm to prior work in TBI. Results: Findings show that PAD widens with longer TSI, and there was evidence for differences between sexes in PAD, with men showing more advanced brain age. We did not find strong evidence supporting a link between PAD and cognitive performance. Interpretation: This work provides evidence that changes in brain structure after cmsTBI are dynamic, with an initial period of change, followed by relative stability in brain morphometry, eventually leading to further changes in the decades after a single cmsTBI. Aim: Variation in spatial predictions of species' ranges made by various models has been recognized as a significant source of uncertainty for modelling species distributions. Consensus approaches that combine the results of multiple models have been employed to reduce the uncertainty introduced by different algorithms. We evaluate how estimates of habitat suitability, projected using species distribution models (SDMs), varied among different consensus methods relative to the variation introduced by different global climate models (GCMs) and representative concentration pathways (RCPs) used for projection. Location: California Floristic Province (California, US portion). Methods: We modelled the current and future potential distributions of 82 terrestrial plant species, developing model predictions under different combinations of GCMs, RCPs, time periods, dispersal assumptions and SDM consensus methods commonly used to combine different species distribution modelling algorithms. We assessed how each of these factors contributed to the variability in future predictions of species habitat suitability change and aggregate measures of proportional change in species richness. We also related variability in species‐level habitat change to species' attributes. Results: Assuming full dispersal capacity, the variability between habitat predictions made by different consensus methods was higher than the variability introduced by different RCPs and GCMs. The relationships between species' attributes and variability in future habitat predictions depended on the source of uncertainty and dispersal assumptions. However, species with small ranges or low prevalence tended to be associated with high variability in range change forecasts. Main Conclusions: Our results support exploring multiple consensus approaches when considering changes in habitat suitability outside of species' current distributions, especially when projecting species with low prevalence and small range sizes, as these species tend to be of the greatest conservation concern yet produce highly variable model outputs. Differences in vulnerability between diverging greenhouse gas concentration scenarios are most readily observed for end‐of‐century time periods and within species' currently occupied habitats (no dispersal). Our insights into the responses of immature stages of vernal solitary bees to the thermal challenges of spring weather mostly come from studies of cavity-nesting megachilid bees in constant temperature incubators. Most of these studies reported either the average timing of adult emergence or the general pace of immature development. In this study, we tracked the longevity and developmental fates of eggs laid by nearly 200 female Osmia lignaria (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae) occupying observation nests set outdoors in a nature preserve. In the spring of 2022, the nesting population was challenged by a prolonged period of unseasonably chilly wet weather. As a consequence, fewer nest cells were provisioned, and hatching among the 2416 eggs was delayed for as much as a month. Surprisingly, these delays incurred no ill-effects on either egg survival or subsequent larval development, both of which were comparable to the much warmer spring of 2021 (3630 eggs). The population’s 33% reproductive shortfall in 2022 was instead attributable to limited hours warm enough for flight and foraging, in part evidenced by the paucity of multi-cell days. Estuaries are essential habitats for recreational and commercial fish that are shaped by both natural and anthropogenic processes. In Louisiana a combination of climate change and planned coastal restoration actions is predicted to increase freshwater introduction to coastal estuaries. As such there is a need to quantify the relationships between estuarine fish ecology and salinity to aid in predicting how species will respond to shifts in salinity. We investigated the relative abundance and dietary niches of adult (24.5 ± 5.4 cm standard length) spotted seatrout Cynoscion nebulosus across varying salinity regimes (oligohaline, mesohaline, and polyhaline) within Barataria Bay, Louisiana, using a combination of net sampling and gut content and stable isotopes analysis. We found that the relative abundance of C. nebulosus was lowest at the oligohaline site, translating to approximately five fewer fish captured for every single psu decrease in a site's average annual salinity. In contrast, we found that diets and, to a lesser extent, isotopic niches had a high degree of overlap across sites with differing salinity regimes. Fish and penaeid shrimp were the most common and important prey taxa recovered from guts at all sites. The small isotopic differences found among sites were likely due to spatial variation in hydrogeochemical baselines, and the observed isotopic overlap provides support for the idea that C. nebulosus move between adjacent salinity regimes and forage throughout Barataria Bay. Our results contribute to a greater understanding of the salinity preference and trophic ecology of C. nebulosus that can aid in predicting their responses to future salinity and habitat changes within Barataria Bay associated with predicted climate change and planned coastal restoration actions. Despite its importance to everyday functioning, reasoning is underexplored in developmental dyslexia. The current study investigated verbal deductive reasoning on the Wason selection task, not previously used in dyslexia research despite its well-established pedigree. Reasoning rule was manipulated, with the conditional rules varying in the logical values presented. The word frequency and imageability of the word terms was also manipulated. Twenty-six adults with dyslexia and 31 adults without dyslexia completed Wason selection task problems. No group difference in reasoning accuracy or completion time was found. However, the participants were most accurate when reasoning with the rule type "If p, then not q" and least accurate with the rule type "If p then q". More trials were also answered correctly when the word terms were highly imageable but of average word frequency. These findings are in line with the general reasoning literature. Dyslexia status did not interact with either rule type or word term type. The study expands upon previous research by testing verbal deductive reasoning in dyslexia, highlighting the role of imageability in facilitating reasoning performance for all, regardless of the presence or absence of dyslexia. Many high-state cataclysmic variables (CVs) exhibit blue-shifted absorption features in their ultraviolet (UV) spectra – a smoking-gun signature of outflows. However, the impact of these outflows on optical spectra remains much more uncertain. During its recent outburst, the eclipsing dwarf nova V455 And displayed strong optical emission lines whose cores were narrower than expected from a Keplerian disc. Here, we explore whether disc + wind models developed for matching UV observations of CVs can also account for these optical spectra. Importantly, V455 And was extremely bright at outburst maximum: the accretion rate implied by fitting the optical continuum with a standard disc model is |$\dot{M}_{\rm acc} \simeq 10^{-7}~{\rm M}_\odot ~{\rm yr^{-1}}$|⁠. Allowing for continuum reprocessing in the outflow helps to relax this constraint. A disc wind can also broadly reproduce the optical emission lines, but only if the wind is (i) highly mass-loaded, with a mass-loss rate reaching |$\dot{M}_{\rm wind} \simeq 0.4 \dot{M}_{\rm acc}$|⁠ , and/or (ii) clumpy, with a volume filling factor |$f_V \simeq 0.1$|⁠. The same models can describe the spectral evolution across the outburst, simply by lowering |$\dot{M}_{\rm acc}$| and |$\dot{M}_{\rm wind}$|⁠. Extending these models to lower inclinations and into the UV produces spectra consistent with those observed in face-on high-state CVs. We also find, for the first time in simulations of this type, P-Cygni-like absorption features in the Balmer series, as have been observed in both CVs and X-ray binaries. Overall, dense disc winds provide a promising framework for explaining multiple observational signatures seen in high-state CVs, but theoretical challenges persist. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding the links between different phases of outflows from active galactic nuclei is a key goal in extragalactic astrophysics. Here, we compare [O  iii ]  |$\lambda \lambda$| 4960, 5008 outflow signatures in quasars with and without broad absorption lines (BALs), aiming to test how the broad absorption troughs seen in the rest-frame ultraviolet are linked to the narrow line region outflows seen in the rest-frame optical. We present new near-infrared spectra from Magellan/FIRE that cover [O  iii ] in 12 quasars with |$2.1\lt z\lt 2.3$|⁠ , selected to have strong outflow signatures in C  iv |$\lambda$| 1550. Combining with data from the literature, we build a sample of 73 BAL, 115 miniBAL, and 125 non-BAL quasars with |$1.5\lt z\lt 2.6$|⁠. The strength and velocity width of [O  iii ] correlate strongly with the C  iv emission properties, but no significant difference is seen in the [O  iii ] emission-line properties between the BALs, non-BALs, and miniBALs once the dependence on C  iv emission is taken into account. A weak correlation is observed between the velocities of C  iv BALs and [O  iii ] emission, which is accounted for by the fact that both outflow signatures correlate with the underlying C  iv emission properties. Our results add to the growing evidence that BALs and non-BALs are drawn from the same parent population and are consistent with a scenario wherein BAL troughs are intermittent tracers of persistent quasar outflows, with a part of such outflow becoming optically thick along our line of sight for sporadic periods of time within which BALs are observed. Background: Immunocompromised hosts (ICH) experience more breakthrough infections and worse clinical outcomes following infection with COVID-19 than immunocompetent people. Prophylactic monoclonal antibody therapies can be challenging to access, and escape variants emerge rapidly. Immunity conferred through vaccination remains a central prevention strategy for COVID-19. COVID-19 vaccines do not elicit optimal immunity in ICH but boosting, through additional doses of vaccine improves humoral and cellular immune responses. This trial aims to assess the immunogenicity and safety of different COVID-19 vaccine booster strategies against SARS-CoV-2 for ICH in Australia. Methods: Bringing optimised COVID-19 vaccine schedules to immunocompromised populations (BOOST-IC) is an adaptive randomised trial of one or two additional doses of COVID-19 vaccines 3 months apart in people living with HIV, solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients, or those who have haematological malignancies (chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, non-Hodgkin lymphoma or multiple myeloma). Key eligibility criteria include having received 3 to 7 doses of Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA)-approved COVID-19 vaccines at least 3 months earlier, and having not received SARS-CoV-2-specific monoclonal antibodies in the 3 months prior to receiving the study vaccine. The primary outcome is the geometric mean concentration of anti-spike SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin G (IgG) 28 days after the final dose of the study vaccine. Key secondary outcomes include anti-spike SARS-CoV-2 IgG titres and the proportion of people seroconverting 6 and 12 months after study vaccines, local and systemic reactions in the 7 days after vaccination, adverse events of special interest, COVID-19 infection, mortality and quality of life. Discussion: This study will enhance the understanding of COVID-19 vaccine responses in ICH, and enable the development of safe, and optimised vaccine schedules in people with HIV, SOT, or haematological malignancy.
