In this study, the thermodynamic and reactivity characteristics of coumarin-derived ligand inclusion complexes with βCD were described, in addition to the in situ reactivity of these ligands and their changes in the complex cavity. For this purpose, computational tools such as molecular docking, second order perturbative analysis (E2PERT), ONIOM2 (DFT/PM6) methods were employed to obtain the global and local reactivity indices, and thermodynamic parameters, in addition to noncovalent interaction (NCI) analysis. As a result, it can be observed that the inclusion complexes are stable and viable given the ability to form non-covalent interactions, but their formation is not spontaneous under the modeling conditions. The global and local reactivity indices show that the ligands change their chemical reactivity inside the inclusion complex, demonstrating that the studied ligands present AOX SET activity outside the cavity, and HAT activity inside the cavity, mainly the C1 and C3 ligands. Introduction: To compare the tolerability and efficacy of a preservative-containing latanoprost (PCL) to a preservative-free formulation of latanoprost (PFL) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.Methods: A pooled analysis was performed of data from five published studies. The primary outcome was tolerability as evaluated by the severity of hyperemia. The secondary objectives were patient tolerance based on a composite ocular surface disease (OSD) score arising from ocular signs and symptoms, patient and investigator satisfaction, and a comparison of IOP-lowering efficacy.Results: There were three randomized controlled trials and two observational studies included in the analysis. Conjunctival hyperemia improved significantly in 25.6% (388) of patients switched to the PFL group versus 11.7% (117) of patients switched to the PCL group (p < 0.001). PFL was two times superior to PCL in reducing ocular hyperemia (odds ratio = 1.96; p < 0.001). The mean OSD composite score decreased by 32.2% in patients switched to the PFL group and 14.1% in the PCL group (p < 0.001). At 3 months, the mean IOP was similar between groups (p = 0.312).Conclusion: This post hoc pooled analysis confirmed the findings of the individual studies that PFL is as efficacious at reducing IOP as PCL but better tolerated. After switching to PFL, there was twice the improvement in the OSD composite score. PFL was twice as effective at reducing ocular hyperemia and other ocular signs. We study the semigroup associated to the Euler--Bernoulli beam equation with localized (discontinuous) dissipation. We assume that the beam is composed of three components: elastic, viscoelastic of Kelvin--Voigt type, and thermoelastic parts. We prove that this model generates a semigroup of Gevrey class that in particular implies the exponential stability of the model. Here we consider a string composed by three different materials: thermo elastic, viscoelastic and elastic. Our main result is that the exponential stability depends on the position of each material. That is, we prove that the model is exponentially stable if and only if the viscoelastic material is not in the center of the string. Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) is applied to image ferroelastic formed c domains in a single crystal ferroelectric barium titanate bulk material. A simple model and an analytical approach are presented, which provides a basis to understand the complex tip-surface interactions responsible for the image contrast in PFM. In particular, the measured amplitude of the piezoresponse out-of-plane surface displacements of a C- domain is compared with theoretical results based upon a three-dimensional Green’s function solution. The electric field distribution in the tip-surface contact is determined using image-charge calculations for a spherical tip separated by a thin water layer from a mechanically isotropic and electrically anisotropic dielectric half plane. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. Most of high-school students have typically lower assimilation of the basic concepts of physics in comparison with other subjects which are closer to their daily life. In addition, the technical language fairly used in physics lessons is far away from their common vocabulary, thus generating estrangement and lack of interest. The idea hereby proposed is trying to get high-school students closer to physics by integrating concepts of physics and technical language in their sport activities. In this work, an innovative experimental and demonstrative pedagogical methodology is described. The methodology is based on two main pillars: embracing concepts while playing and normalizing technical language during pleasant moments. The work provides several activities descriptions and procedures as well as suggestions of technical language, uses to physics and sports high-school teachers in order to achieve a better inclusion of physics in high-school students. Zadeh's fuzzy set theory for imprecise or vague data has been followed by other successful models, inclusive of Molodtsov's soft set theory and hybrid models like fuzzy soft sets. Their success has been backed up by applications to many branches like engineering, medicine, or finance. In continuation of this effort, the purpose of this paper is to put forward a versatile methodology for the valuation of goods, particularly the assessment of real state properties. In order to reach this target, we develop the concept of (partial) valuation fuzzy soft set and introduce the novel problem of data filling in partial valuation fuzzy soft sets. The use of fuzzy soft sets allows us to quantify the qualitative attributes involved in an assessment context. As a result, we illustrate the effectiveness and validity of our valuation methodology with a real case study that uses data from the Spanish real estate market. The main contribution of this paper is the implementation of a novel methodology, which allows us to assess a large variety of assets where data are heterogeneous. Our technique permits to avoid the appraiser's subjectivity (exhibited by practitioners in housing valuation) and the well-known disadvantages of some alternative methods (such as linear multiple regression). Background: Immune Modulation and Gemcitabine Evaluation-1, a randomised, open-label, phase II, first-line, proof of concept study (NCT01303172), explored safety and tolerability of IMM-101 (heat-killed Mycobacterium obuense; NCTC 13365) with gemcitabine (GEM) in advanced pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.Methods: Patients were randomised (2 : 1) to IMM-101 (10 mg ml(-l) intradermally)+GEM (1000 mg m(-2) intravenously; n=75), or GEM alone (n=35). Safety was assessed on frequency and incidence of adverse events (AEs). Overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS) and overall response rate (ORR) were collected.Results: IMM-101 was well tolerated with a similar rate of AE and serious adverse event reporting in both groups after allowance for exposure. Median OS in the intent-to-treat population was 6.7 months for IMM-101+GEM v 5.6 months for GEM; while not significant, the hazard ratio (HR) numerically favoured IMM-101+GEM (HR, 0.68 (95% CI, 0.44-1.04, P=0.074). In a pre-defined metastatic subgroup (84%), OS was significantly improved from 4.4 to 7.0 months in favour of IMM-101+GEM (HR, 0.54, 95% CI 0.33-0.87, P=0.01).Conclusions: IMM-101 with GEM was as safe and well tolerated as GEM alone, and there was a suggestion of a beneficial effect on survival in patients with metastatic disease. Context. Microquasars are accreting Galactic sources that are commonly observed to launch relativistic jets. One of the most important issues regarding these sources is the energy budget of ejections relative to the accretion of matter. Aims. The X-ray binary, black hole candidate, and microquasar H1743-322 exhibited a series of X-ray outbursts between 2003 and 2008. We took optical and near-infrared (OIR) observations with the ESO/NTT telescope during three of these outbursts (2003, 2004, and 2008). The goals of these observations were to investigate the presence of a jet, and to disentangle the various contributions constituting the spectral energy distribution (SED): accretion, ejection, and stellar emission. Methods. Photometric and spectroscopic OIR observations allowed us to produce a high time-resolution lightcurve in KKs-band, to analyze emission lines present in the IR spectra, to construct a multiwavelength SED including radio, IR, and X-ray data, and to complete the OIR vs. X-ray correlation of black hole binaries with H1743-322 data points. Results. We detect rapid flares of duration ∼5 min in the high time-resolution IR lightcurve. We identify hydrogen and helium emission lines in the IR spectra, coming from the accretion disk. The IR SED exhibits the spectral index typically associated with the X-ray high, soft state in our observations taken during the 2003 and 2004 outbursts, while the index changes to one that is typical of the X-ray low, hard state during the 2008 outburst. During this last outburst, we detected a change of slope in the NIR spectrum between the J and Ks bands, where the JH part is characteristic of an optically thick disk emission, while the HKKs part is typical of optically thin synchrotron emission. Furthermore, the comparison of our IR data with radio and X-ray data shows that H1743-322 exhibits a faint jet both in radio and NIR domains. Finally, we suggest that the companion star is a late-type main sequence star located in the Galactic bulge. Conclusions. These OIR photometric and spectroscopic observations of the microquasar H1743-322, which are the first of this source to be published in a broad multiwavelength context, allow us to unambiguously identify two spectra of different origins in the OIR domain, evolving from optically thick thermal emission to optically thin synchrotron emission toward longer wavelengths. Comparing these OIR observations with other black hole candidates suggests that H1743-322 behaves like a radio-quiet and NIR-dim black hole in the low, hard state. This study will be useful when quantitatively comparing the overall contribution of the compact jet and accretion flow in the energy budget of microquasars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although it is generally accepted that Escherichia coli glycogen genes are organized in two tandemly arranged, differentially regulated glgBX and glgCAP operons, RT (reverse transcriptase)–PCR analyses carried out in the present study showed that E. coli cells possess transcripts comprising the five glgBXCAP genes. glg::lacZY expression analyses in cells lacking the region immediately upstream of the glgB gene revealed an almost total abolishment of glgB, glgX and glgC expression, but only a 50–60% reduction of the wild-type glgA and glgP expression levels. Furthermore, similar analyses showed that glgA and glgP expression was almost totally abolished in cells lacking glgA upstream sequences, including glgC, glgB and the asd–glgB intergenic region upstream of glgB. These results indicate that E. coli glgBXCAP genes are organized in a single transcriptional unit controlled by promoter sequences occurring upstream of glgB, and that an alternative suboperonic promoter is located within glgC, driving expression of the glgA and glgP genes. Computer searches for consensus promoters, and analyses of glgB::lacZY and glgA::lacZY expression in cells containing deletions of glgB and glgA upstream sequences identified regions directing glgBXCAP and glgAP expression. 5′ RACE (rapid amplification of cDNA ends) analyses located a glgBXCAP transcription start site 155 bp upstream of the glgB initiation codon, and a glgAP transcription start site 359 bp upstream of the glgA initiation codon. Finally, glg::lacZY expression analyses on cells lacking the relA or phoP regulatory genes indicated that both the glgBXCAP operon and the suboperonic promoter driving glgAP expression form part of both the RelA and PhoP-PhoQ regulons. We report on the simulation of vibrational resonances of stiff atomic force microscope cantilevers made of silicon by finite element methods (FEM) for application in contact-resonance spectroscopy. The FEM model considers the cubic symmetry of silicon single crystals and the geometrical shape of the cantilevers with a trapezoidal cross section and a triangular free end. Using a two-step iterative procedure, we fitted our FEM model to the experiment. In a first step, we used the measured resonant frequencies of an individual cantilever to fit the geometrical dimensions of the cantilever beam model. In a second step, we measured the resonant frequencies of the same cantilever in contact with a sample and determined the out-of-plane and in-plane tip-sample contact stiffness values by a fitting procedure. The FEM model also allows precise calculation of the spring constant of the cantilever, and consequently calculation of the force in contact. This article shows different friction prediction models applicable to lubricants in point contacts under an elastohydrodynamic regime.The types of models used are two variations of the Newtonian theory, the Limiting Shear Stress model and the one based on Carreau's equation. The article sets out the theoretical calculation procedures and the ensuing equations for calculating the friction coefficient. The aims of the article are to study the effect of the parameters with influence on friction and to compare the model's results with those given by an experimental stage performed on a mini traction machine. This test system allows the measurement of friction coefficient in point contacts (ball-disc) under a wide range of variation of parameters such as temperature, slide-roll ratio, lubricant, material, load, or velocity. Abstract  In this paper, from Frèchet’s metric, diagnostic tools are constructed for the detection of influential observations in Profile Analysis with elliptically distributed random errors . This distributional hypothesis allows the application of the proposed diagnostics to a wide variety of random experiences, not only for data from a multivariate normal distribution but also from other symmetric distributions, commonly used in studies of several sciences. The diagnostics are based on Frèchet’s distance between the distributions of the basic statistics in Profile Analysis, in the postulated model and in the perturbed model obtained by deleting an observation from the sample data. Tyrosinase is a cuproprotein that hydroxylates monophenols to o-diphenols, which it then oxidises to o-quinones, using molecular oxygen. Based on kinetic studies of the steady state and measuring product formation during the action of the enzyme on o-diphenols, we determine the Michaelis constant and the maximum velocity, respectively. Similarly, we determine these kinetic constants for the enzyme acting on monophenols. From these constants obtained for a monophenol/o-diphenol pair, it is possible to calculate a new constant, the Michaelis constant of the enzyme for an o-diphenol acting on the corresponding monophenol, by means of an equation that relates the above-mentioned kinetic constants. Furthermore, it is also possible to establish the relation between the Michaelis constants for the oxygen in the presence of monophenol and in the presence of o-diphenol from the relation between the maximum velocities of the monophenol and o-diphenol experimentally determined by measuring aminochrome. From applying the equations described above to the kinetic data of the many tyrosinases described in the literature, we find that the Michaelis constant for the o-diphenol in the presence of monophenol is much lower than that obtained when the enzyme acts on o-diphenol alone. Abstract  The reduced equations for the isomorphism classes of hyperelliptic curves of genus 2 admitting a Weierstrass point over a finite field of arbitrary characteristic, are shown and the number of such classes is included. This work picks up in a unified way a series of previous results published by several authors by using different methodologies. Beauveria bassiana strain EABb 04/01-Tip isolated from stem-borer larvae of Timaspis papaveris (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae), a serious pest of opium poppy in Spain, was shown to be able to become established endophytically in this pharmaceutical crop. Microbiological, molecular and light and electron microscopic methods were used to study fungal colonisation and to describe its mode of penetration. After inoculation with a foliar spray of conidia, microbiological methods showed 100% of plants examined 24, 48, 72 and 144 h after treatment to be colonised endophytically by the fungus, although the percentage of previously surface sterilised leaf pieces showing fungal growth was 100% at 24 and 48 h, and 80 and 75% at 72 and 144 h after treatment, respectively. The fungus was also observed in leaf pieces obtained from newly formed leaves, indicating that it could spread from treated leaves to leaves formed after fungal application. For molecular studies, a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) protocol was used to amplify the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 regions of the rDNA of the plant and the fungus. This procedure allowed the detection of the fungus on the surface of the leaves and also endophytically, but only at 72 h after treatment. A nucleotide BLAST search revealed that the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 sequence of strain EABb 04/01-Tip showed 100% homology with a similar sequence from Cordyceps bassiana. SEM images revealed that although numerous conidia were observed on the leaf surface, few germinated and penetrated. Intracellular colonisation by B. bassiana was not observed, but hyphae were detected growing into the xylem vessels. The fungus was found to colonise 40.5 ± 4.3% of seedlings (with two cotyledons and the two first real leaves) from seeds dressed with a fungal spore suspension. These results may have implications in the biological control of T. papaveris, including the possible systemic protection of the plant against this cynipid. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper a sufficient condition for the identifiability of finite mixtures is given. This condition is less restrictive than Teicher’s condition Teicher H, Ann Math Stat 34:1265–1269 (1963) and therefore it can be applied to a wider range of families of mixtures. In particular, it applies to the classes of all finite mixtures of Log-gamma and of reversed Log-gamma distributions. These families have been already studied by Henna J Jpn Stat Soc 24:193–200 (1994) using another condition, different from Teicher’s, but more difficult to check in many cases. Furthermore, the result given in this paper is very appropiated for the case of mixtures of the union of different distribution families. Cauchy-Riemann equations for smooth maps ϕ: ℂ → ℂ k are proved to be of variational type if and only if k is even. This fact is seen to be related to a complex differential form of degree (3, 0) on ℂ × ℂ k, which exists only for an even k. Inverter features are reviewed from a PV systems perspective, with a view to contributing to possible codes, procurement specifications and testing procedures, in order to assure the technical quality of these systems. A laboratory testing campaign has been carried out on a representative set of 16 currently available inverters and a set of the most common AC appliances. The results of the tests are discussed with the aim of divulging the particular features of operating AC appliances in PV systems and the provisions to be taken into account in PV system design. The development of testing procedures has followed the motto ‘keep it as simple as possible’, in order to make their application easier in conventional laboratories in developing countries. Testicular-epididymal hemodynamics is studied by ultrasonographic color velocity imaging (CVI) in patients with primary, uncomplicated inguinal hernias. This procedure allows more precision than any other known Doppler system in measuring hemodynamic parameters such as peak systolic and diastolic velocity, resistance index and pulsatility index. The results of the exploration of 480 arteries of various testicular vascular territories are compared with those obtained by other authors in young healthy individuals using color Doppler. The main purpose of this paper is to present the FIVE Project (Fotovoltaico Integrado en Vehículos de Emergencias) which involves the integration of a photovoltaic system in a health emergency vehicle. Here, the use of photovoltaic technology is extended to improving the performance of these kinds of vehicles. The fact is that their batteries usually deteriorate prematurely, owing to the high electrical consumption of the medical equipment they have to support, together with the short periods of time that their engines remain running. A consequence of such problems is high maintenance costs due to the frequent changes of batteries, and what is more important, occasional difficulties in starting the vehicle at critical moments. Furthermore, the service battery of the health emergency vehicle has to be charged every day by a battery charger connected to the grid, providing this kind of vehicle a poor autonomy level. In order to solve these problems, the main purpose of this project was to design, implement and evaluate the performance and utility of a health emergency vehicle prototype with an integrated PV generator. The data collected from the prototype evaluation tests have shown that the incorporation of the PV generator solves the problems mentioned above. The prediction of clinical outcome of patients after breast cancer surgery plays an important role in medical tasks such as diagnosis and treatment planning. Survival estimations are currently performed by clinicians using non-numerical techniques. Artificial neural networks are shown to be a powerful tool for analyzing data sets where there are complicated nonlinear interactions between the input data and the information to be predicted. In this paper, a new estimation to set the maximum bound on prediction accuracy is presented, based on the approximation of the a posteriori probability of Bayes by feed-forward three-layer neural networks. This result is applied to different patients' follow-up time intervals, in order to obtain the best prediction accuracy for the correct classification probability of patient relapse after breast cancer surgery using clinical-pathological data (tumor size, patient age, menarchy age, etc.), which were obtained from the Medical Oncology Service of the Hospital Clinico Universitario of Malaga, Spain. Different network topologies and learning parameters are investigated to obtain the best prediction accuracy. A classical result by J. W. Milnor states that the total curvature of a closed curve $C$ in the Euclidean $n$-space is the limit of the total curvatures of polygons inscribed in $C$.
