This paper aims to evaluate the economic implications of meteorological drought in Spain. The study seeks to provide decision-makers with crucial insights into the macroeconomic effects of drought, enabling them to devise mitigation strategies and minimize its impact on economic activity. The Partial Hypothetical Extraction Method (HEM) is employed within the Input-Output analysis framework extended to a Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) of Spain to achieve this goal. The database utilized for this analysis is the FNAM for Spain in 2017, in millions of euros, obtained from the Full International and Global Accounts for Research in Input-Output Analysis (FIGARO) project, a collaboration between Eurostat and the European Commission. The study aims to estimate the economic impact of drought on the productive sectors of the Spanish economy in terms of sectoral production and GDP. This involves simulating the partial reduction in value-added resulting from variations in average water productivity per gross value added, based on the drought indicator SPI-24. Three scenarios are generated: (1) drought, (2) moderate drought and (3) severe drought. In quantitative terms, the simulated drought scenarios could lead to a drop in GDP of 0.88% for the drought scenario, 1.61% for the moderate drought scenario, and 1.76% for the severe drought scenario. We evaluate the exposure of Italian regions to employment and the health risk associated with the spread of COVID-19. First, we estimate the degree of participation of Italian regions in a plurality of value chains linked to consumption, investment and exports. Second, we investigate the different levels of contagion risk associated with each value chain and the possibility of reducing such risk through remote work. We find that regions are affected differently by lockdown policies because of their highly heterogeneous embeddedness in different value chains, and their diverse sectoral contributions to each of them. Based on the generalization of the world's existing approaches to modeling the consequences of limiting energy subsidies in relation to Uzbekistan, the necessity of using the input–output method in its various modifications is substantiated. The developed model structure is based on three channels of distribution of the shock to the economy, the employed and the environment from the restriction of energy subsidies: price, investment and structural. Each of them models different effects of restricting energy subsidies: rising energy tariffs and their impact on output and overall inflation rate; assessment of additional budget revenues in comparison with shortfall in tax revenues due to the slowdown in the growth of energy-intensive industries; negative effects on employment and incomes of the population; positive effects for the environment; growth of external debt during the implementation of green investment projects and a number of others. Using the example of Uzbekistan, the article discusses the results of modeling the consequences of the implementation of various scenarios for the reform of energy subsidies at the macro and sectoral levels, the effects on the environment and financial sustainability. At the same time, issues of limiting the negative social consequences of the reform of energy subsidies by introducing energy efficient technologies and renewable energy sources, stimulating final demand, and slowing down the rate of reduction of subsidies were studied. In this paper, a systematic literature review on the impact of fisheries on the economy and the application of the computable general equilibrium (CGE) and input–output (IO) methods for assessing this impact is conducted. The importance of fisheries as a food source, the over exploitation of this resource, and, consequently, the impact of fisheries on the economy are the motivations behind this study. By reviewing the applications of two of the most common economic modelling tools, we aim to shine light on the state of the art and how the impact of fisheries on the economy has been addressed in the literature. In this analysis, three main themes of socio-economic, ecological, and environmental have been identified, and the application of these methods in each theme has been considered. The results show that while IO methods continue to be applied in the literature, the CGE method has experienced increased application recently, and future applications are anticipated due to its enhanced capabilities in comparison with IO models. While international trade drives countries' economic growth and promotes employment, it also has some environmental impact. To investigate the impact of trade on carbon emissions and employment, this study performs a detailed decomposition and measurement of embodied carbon emissions and employment in value-added trade between China, Japan, and Korea from 2007–2019. The current study established that, while China's trade with Japan and Korea created many domestic jobs, it also resulted in significant domestic carbon emissions. While Japan and Korea's trade with China reduced carbon emissions, employment in their own countries was reduced and replaced by employment in China. At the value chain route level, trade among the three countries through each value chain route either achieves employment promotion at the cost of increased carbon emissions or promotes domestic emissions reduction at the cost of employment loss. However, it is worth noting that, when trade between Japan and Korea was conducted through simple GVCs (route 2), it not only helped reduce Japan's carbon emissions, but also effectively promoted employment. This is the ideal trade route. The results of this study can provide useful reference information for developing countries such as China, to achieve sustainable economic growth, carbon emission reduction, and employment promotion in the context of trade globalization. This work evaluates the effects that several outdoor 'popular' sports events, held in the province of Huesca, had on production and employment in the Aragonese economy (a European region in Northeast Spain). We use data from 880 questionnaires responded to by participants of the most significant and recent sporting events held in Huesca. The data have been used to build a vector of final demand increases. For the analysis, we update the input-output table for Aragon from the last one available, from 2005 to 2010. Using the input-output methodology, the results suggest positive effects on production and employment in most sectors (estimated to be about equal to current losses from not having these events, due to COVID19) The events under examination are typically 1-day affairs and have relatively low costs (registration income surpasses costs, and typically use public unused/unsaturated spaces). Using the example of the energy sector and the agricultural sector of Uzbekistan, the article shows the possibility of incorporating the technical parameters of typical green and energy-saving projects into the basic input–output model, obtaining estimates of the impact made by such projects on the financial sustainability of the relevant industries. Approaches are reviewed to combining long-term scenario forecasts for the development of the industry with model calculations of macroeconomic, environmental, and social consequences that allow an unambiguous economic interpretation, as well as to choosing the directions of green transformation that are the most promising in terms of a set of criteria, including social ones. The purpose of the work is to show the possibility of taking into account the national interests of Uzbekistan when substantiating the green transformation model using a methodology that combines detailed input–output models with engineering calculations for specific green investment projects and estimates of demand for the investment resources necessary for their implementation. The catfish industry is the largest U.S. aquaculture sector and a major contributor to the rural economies of the Southern states of Alabama, Arkansas, and Mississippi. Economic contributions of this industry to the tristate region were estimated using an input-output modeling approach with the IMPLAN database and software (Impact Analysis for Planning MIG, Inc.). An analysis-by-parts approach was employed as the IMPLAN database does not disaggregate the catfish sector from other livestock industries which have expenditure patterns that differ substantially from those of catfish. All major actors of the catfish industry, i.e. feed mills, hatcheries, foodfish farms, and processing plants, were surveyed to obtain their expenditure patterns and output in terms of sales. Data were obtained from 68 farms (hatcheries and foodfish combined), four feed mills, and eight processing plants in the tristate region. Sales and expenditure values were converted to coefficients employing standard enterprise budgeting techniques and imported to the IMPLAN model for estimating industry contributions during 2019. The direct output from the catfish industry ($1.10 billion) generated a total economic contribution of $1.91 billion. The industry directly employed 4,298 people and created an additional 4,868 jobs in the tristate economy for a total employment effect of 9,166 jobs. Catfish industry spending created an indirect economic effect of $552 million in other secondary sectors that supplied production inputs and services. The induced economic effect generated from household spending amounted to $254 million. Some of the key sectors influenced by the catfish industry were grain farming, banking and financial institutions, truck transportation services, electricity generation, equipment, and machinery manufacturing. The industry also generated $78 million in local, state, and federal taxes. This study provides critical insights for policymakers and others into the contribution of the U.S. farm-raised catfish industry to local and regional economies as well as its diverse-industry interconnections. Natural and anthropogenic disasters frequently affect both the supply and demand sides of an economy. A striking recent example is the Covid-19 pandemic which has created severe disruptions to economic output in most countries. These direct shocks to supply and demand will propagate downstream and upstream through production networks. Given the exogenous shocks, we derive a lower bound on total shock propagation. We find that even in this best case scenario network effects substantially amplify the initial shocks. To obtain more realistic model predictions, we study the propagation of shocks bottom-up by imposing different rationing rules on industries if they are not able to satisfy incoming demand. Our results show that economic impacts depend strongly on the emergence of input bottlenecks, making the rationing assumption a key variable in predicting adverse economic impacts. The article summarizes the results of research into analysis and modeling of interregional value chains (IRVCs). The necessity of developing state policy aimed at IRVC development is substantiated. The existing analytical and modeling tools for improving the quality of management of these processes are systematized and tested. Application of mathematics in economics is crucial, yet often underrated topic of study and research. That is also the case of linear algebra and its applications in description and modelling of economic phenomena. This article is focused on application of sets of linear equations in economics as exemplified by the Gauss and Gauss-Jordan reductions, and by Leontief's input-output economics. The former are the basic tools usable to dissect multivariable production-describing (and other) functions and matrices, while the latter presents sophisticated and data-driven macroeconomic approach of "Nobel Memorial Prize" significance. Critical infrastructures provide society with services essential to its functioning, and extensive disruptions give rise to large societal consequences. Risk and vulnerability analyses of critical infrastructures generally focus narrowly on the infrastructure of interest and describe the consequences as nonsupplied commodities or the cost of unsupplied commodities; they rarely holistically consider the larger impact with respect to higher‐order consequences for the society. From a societal perspective, this narrow focus may lead to severe underestimation of the negative effects of infrastructure disruptions. To explore this theory, an integrated modeling approach, combining models of critical infrastructures and economic input–output models, is proposed and applied in a case study. In the case study, a representative model of the Swedish power transmission system and a regionalized economic input–output model are utilized. This enables exploration of how a narrow infrastructure or a more holistic societal consequence perspective affects vulnerability‐related mitigation decisions regarding critical infrastructures. Two decision contexts related to prioritization of different vulnerability‐reducing measures are considered—identifying critical components and adding system components to increase robustness. It is concluded that higher‐order societal consequences due to power supply disruptions can be up to twice as large as first‐order consequences, which in turn has a significant effect on the identification of which critical components are to be protected or strengthened and a smaller effect on the ranking of improvement measures in terms of adding system components to increase system redundancy. Summary: Methodology is developed for linking the urban metabolism (UM) to global environmental stresses on the carbon (C) cycle, nitrogen (N) cycle, and biodiversity loss. UM variables are systematically mapped to the drivers of carbon, nitrogen, and biodiversity impacts. Change in mean species abundance is used as metric of biodiversity loss, by adopting the dose‐response relationships from the GLOBIO model. The main biodiversity drivers related to UM included here are land‐use change (LUC) and atmospheric N deposition. The methodology is demonstrated by studying the nexus for Shanghai in 2006, based on energy and soybean consumption. Results for Shanghai show a strong nexus between C, N, and biodiversity impact due to electricity consumption and energy used in manufacturing industries and construction. Prioritization of the shift away from coal energy will therefore lead to lowering the urban growth impact on all three dimensions. Road transportation, domestic aviation, and the metal industry impact only the C footprint highly, whereas district energy impacts only biodiversity loss highly, showing a weak nexus. Among the global impacts of soybean consumption in Shanghai on biodiversity loss (due to LUC only), the highest impact occurs in Uruguay (0.52%) followed by Brazil (0.05%) and Argentina (0.02%). The local impact on biodiversity loss (i.e., within China) of soybean consumption in Shanghai is 1.03%. However, the methodology and results are limited due to the partial inclusion of drivers, a carbon footprint based on carbon dioxide emissions only, and limitations of biodiversity loss models. Input-Output (I-O) tables are produced by statistical offices to estimate the relationships between the sectors of an economy. I-O tables can be unbalanced if the sum of its columns (total input destination) does not equal the sum of its rows (total output). An artificial Ant Colony (ACO) algorithm based on Bayesian slave-making polymorphus ants is proposed for balancing an I-O matrix. The approach is inspired on the behavior of Rossomyrmex minuchae, a parasite ant that enslaves other species of ants (Proformica) which in turn choose an optimal path between their colony and the source of food by leaving a trace of pheromones. In the algorithm, an improvement in the balance of I-O accounts increase the pheromones, thus raising the probability of ants moving towards the equilibrium of the matrix. An application to a real I-O matrix and Monte Carlo experiments were performed to evaluate the proposed ACO algorithm. The results showed that slave-raiding ACO can be used by statistical offices as an automated algorithm to produce more timely and reliable I-O tables. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Contractionary effects of the current global crisis are not homogenous among sectors. Moreover, sectoral employment multipliers and high regional unemployment differentials unequally transfer these effects into labor market. The purpose of this study is to explore the inter-sectoral sensitivities of regional labor markets in Turkey to changes in the final demand. To do this, we decompose the labor demand by sectors and by regions using input-output methodology. Own employment generation effects and regional employment multipliers of each sector are calculated. Overall findings constitute an employment generation map of Turkey. One of the major findings is the strength of the mutual relationship between agriculture and manufacturing sectors. The biggest spillover effect is created by manufacturing upon mostly agriculture, trade and transportation. Agriculture, social services and trade are the most sensitive sectors to changes in the final demand. At regional level; trade, social services and manufacturing are the most influential sectors on Istanbul. The current account imbalances between northern and southern euro area countries from 1998 to 2007 have been considered one of the key problems in the euro crisis. Cumulated over 12 years, the sustained differentials of high inflations in south countries led to a cumulative price differential relative to the north countries and contributed to the deterioration in competitiveness. In addition, south countries cannot use nominal currency devaluation, as it used to do before. Because of the high costs of internal devaluation, the policy option of a tax combination can replicate the effects attained under nominal exchange rate devaluation. Using a modified dynamic IO model for Poland which allows taking into account actual trends observed in recently available statistical data we compare the rate of economic growth calculated for different growth paths resulting from the model. The goal of the research was to examine the distance between the actual structure of production and the structure on the turnpike and its impact on the economic growth of the economy under study. The results of the study indicate that the impact of structural change on output takes place in three general stages. The benefits of structural change do not outbalance the corresponding costs immediately, since it takes several periods until the growth rate of those paths which are closer to the von Neumann ray become larger than the corresponding growth rate of the benchmark growth path. A skyline analysis of Japan by Professor Hiroshi Yoshikawa et al. made it quite clear that Japan's industrial structure has been rapidly changing. According to research by Professor Masanao Aoki and Hiroshi Yoshikawa, the fact that successive innovations have not occurred and that a lack of effective demand has accompanied such nonoccurrence is said to be the cause of Japan's chronic deflation. In The Postwar History of the Yen, Yutaka Kosai wrote that the period after the occurrence and collapse of Japan's economic bubble was a time of differences between domestic and overseas prices and a time of industrial adjustment, and he discussed price destruction and hollowing out. We develop a new method which extends dynamic mode decomposition (DMD) to incorporate the effect of control to extract low-order models from high-dimensional, complex systems. DMD finds spatial-temporal coherent modes, connects local-linear analysis to nonlinear operator theory, and provides an equation-free architecture which is compatible with compressive sensing. In actuated systems, DMD is incapable of producing an input-output model; moreover, the dynamics and the modes will be corrupted by external forcing. Our new method, dynamic mode decomposition with control (DMDc), capitalizes on all of the advantages of DMD and provides the additional innovation of being able to disambiguate between the underlying dynamics and the effects of actuation, resulting in accurate input-output models. The method is data-driven in that it does not require knowledge of the underlying governing equations--only snapshots in time of observables and actuation data from historical, experimental, or black-box simulations. The open and the semi-closed input–output model are widely used in impact analysis but usually yield considerably different outcomes. This paper examines whether such differences also exist in structural decomposition analyses. The empirical part considers the decomposition of the growth in gross output and in labor compensation, for China (1997–2007) and for a set of 35 other countries. Our main findings are twofold. First, for gross output growth, both models yield very similar results for the factors they have in common. Therefore, if only the contribution of these common factors is of interest, it does not matter whether the semi-closed or the open input–output model is used. Second, for the analysis of labor compensation growth, both models may yield significantly different results for the labor compensation coefficients. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the value of computable general equilibrium (CGE) modeling for impact analysis of real estate developments and redevelopments. Design/methodology/approach – Uses a model constructed for Colorado to compare estimates of economic impact of a hypothetical mixed-use development from a CGE model with an input-output (IO) model similar to those commonly used in applied economic impact analysis. Findings – Economic impact estimates of construction activity are demonstrated to be lower when using a CGE approach as compared to an IO approach while impact estimates of continuing operations of a property are demonstrated to be more accurate and potentially higher using a CGE approach. Practical implications – A CGE approach as opposed to an IO approach will be particularly useful for practitioners in particular cases where IO models are ill suited to provide meaningful estimates concerning impact of continuing operations. This is especially likely where commercial tenants are unknown or when the development includes a residential component. Social implications – More complete and accurate assessments of economic impact may positively affect views on property development and redevelopment by the public and government. Originality/value – This paper adds to the existing literature concerning economic impact analysis of real estate and is the first paper in the field, to the authors’ knowledge; to compare estimates from the standard IO approach to those derived using more sophisticated modeling techniques. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview and comparison of three related methods for modelling the short-run economic impact of events, namely the partial Input-Output (I-O), Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) and Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models. An analysis of strengths and limitations of these different methods suggests that it may be considerations such as the underlying assumptions specific to each model, data collection, expected output, research objectives, and costs involved that determine the choice of modelling framework. Data from surveys conducted at the Aardklop National Arts Festival during 2010 were used in the comparative analyses, which were executed by means of two regional (i.e. provincial-level) models and one small-region (i.e. place-specific) model constructed for the small town. Analysing the spillover effects is crucial for small and open regions where productive leakages are relevant, as could be the case of Galicia within the Spanish context. Therefore, the main aim of this paper is to examine the spatial interactions between Galicia and the rest of Spain economies that tourism consumption involves, for the period 2001-2007. An interregional input-output model is applied for the year 2005. Additionally, three different kinds of tourism consumption are considered: two inbound and a domestic one. Usage of the economic analysis in the study of the performance of health care system does not surprise anyone nowadays. Trends that are drawn over the years fluctuate from the technology assessment of health programs - in terms of efficiency, costs or utility for patients, through methods to establishing copayment for health services and the demand for medical services. Much of the interest is devoted to analysis of the shape of the health care system: the amount of contributions to the National Health Fund, the managing the system, both at the micro and macro level, or restructuring. Any method that allows to show dependencies, identify weaknesses/strengths of the health care system is appreciated by health policy makers. The aim of this article is an attempt of the use of models of input-output type in the analysis of the performance of the health care sector in Poland. The construction of input-output model is based on the observed data for the specified, variously defined area - it may concern: country, region, municipality, etc., hence with the appropriate designed database, it may be possible to examine the flow of health benefits - for example, expressed in zlotys. Biogeochemical cycles are essential ecosystem services that continue to degrade as a result of human activities, but are not fully considered in efforts toward sustainable engineering. This article develops a model that integrates the carbon cycle with economic activities in the 2002 U.S. economy. Data about the carbon cycle, including emissions and sequestration flows, is obtained from the greenhouse gas inventory of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Economic activities are captured by the economic input-output model available from the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The resulting model is more comprehensive in its accounting for the carbon cycle than existing methods for carbon footprint (CF) calculations. Examples of unique flows in this model include the effect of land-use and land-cover change on carbon dioxide flow within the U.S. national boundary, carbon sequestration in urban trees, and emissions resulting from liming. This model is used to gain unique insight into the carbon profile of U.S. economic sectors by providing the life cycle emissions and sequestration in each sector. An extraordinary amount of electrophysiological data has been collected from various brain nuclei to help us understand how neural activity in one region influences another region. In this paper, we exploit the point process modeling (PPM) framework and describe a method for constructing aggregate input–output (IO) stochastic models that predict spiking activity of a population of neurons in the “output” region as a function of the spiking activity of a population of neurons in the “input” region. We first build PPMs of each output neuron as a function of all input neurons, and then cluster the output neurons using the model parameters. Output neurons that lie within the same cluster have the same functional dependence on the input neurons. We first applied our method to simulated data, and successfully uncovered the predetermined relationship between the two regions. We then applied our method to experimental data to understand the input–output relationship between motor cortical neurons and 1) somatosensory and 2) premotor cortical neurons during a behavioral task. Our aggregate IO models highlighted interesting physiological dependences including relative effects of inhibition/excitation from input neurons and extrinsic factors on output neurons. Purpose - This chapter explores the basic characteristics of stochastic frontier estimation, discusses advantages of the method that make it conducive to research in international marketing, and provides an application to demonstrate its use. Potential applications in international marketing research are also discussed. Methodology - Stochastic frontier estimation. Findings - Stochastic frontier estimation models, prevalent in other fields, are very limited in the international marketing literature. Many potential opportunities exist for its use in the context of international marketing. Originality/value of paper - The intent of this chapter is to show that stochastic frontier estimation is a potentially valuable tool for international marketing research. This article provides a methodological contribution to the study of the effect of changes in population age structure on carbon dioxide (CO(2)) emissions. First, I propose a generalization of the IPAT equation to a multisector economy with an age-structured population and discuss the insights that can be obtained in the context of stable population theory. Second, I suggest a statistical model of household consumption as a function of household size and age structure to quantitatively evaluate the extent of economies of scale in consumption of energy-intensive goods, and to estimate age-specific profiles of consumption of energy-intensive goods and of CO(2) emissions. Third, I offer an illustration of the methodologies using data for the United States. The analysis shows that per-capita CO(2) emissions increase with age until the individual is in his or her 60s, and then emissions tend to decrease. Holding everything else constant, the expected change in U.S. population age distribution during the next four decades is likely to have a small, but noticeable, positive impact on CO(2) emissions. Rural North America has undergone a major economic transformation over the past century due to labor-saving technological progress, reductions in transport costs, and rising household incomes. The results are greater rural economic diversity, selected rural population decline, increased rural–urban interdependence, emergent exurban areas, and amenity-led rural growth. We summarize key research insights and provide a selected review of the economics literature over the past 100 years with a focus on this economic transformation of rural places, its implications for rural communities, and key modeling innovations and applications. R&D spillovers are unanimously considered as one of the main driving forces of technical change, innovation and economic growth. This paper aims at measuring interindustry R&D spillovers. We apply an 'uncertainty-sensitivity analysis' to the Italian input-output table of intermediate goods split into 31 economic sectors for the year 2000. The value added of using this methodology is the opportunity of distinguishing between spillover effects induced by productive linkages (the Leontief forward multipliers) and those activated by R&D investments, capturing the uncertain and non-linear nature of the relations between spillovers and factors affecting them. The primary purpose of this article is to propose a Regional Impact Based Feasibility Study (RIBFS) framework, which is an alternative model to the traditional feasibility study that is used to assess the benefits of the investment of public funds in convention centers. More specifically, the framework features a rigorous methodology that can be used to calculate a more comprehensive picture of what convention centers can deliver on public investments. Numerous studies have focused on the importance of the existence of convention centers; however, few authors have been critical of the failure of feasibility studies to accurately forecast economic impacts and operational pro-forma statements. The Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida was used as a case study for assessing this proposed framework. Results indicate that despite operational deficits as an independent entity, a convention center provides income and jobs for a variety of businesses and produces a ripple effect of broad economic interactions that produces additional regional income. According to the official Institute of Tourist Studies, the Balearic Islands, a Spanish region with just over one million inhabitants, received 9.6 million international arrivals in 2005 out of 55.8 million for the entire country. Although a rather impressive figure, it is 8.2% below the 10.5 million recorded in 1999, which might partially explain why the Balearic Islands has recorded the worst growth performance of all 17 autonomous Spanish regions since 2000. A look at the 1997 regional input—output table confirms the Balearic Islands as a service—oriented economy highly specialized in the production of services for tourists. The main purpose of this paper is to provide the first assessment of the impact of tourism in the Balearic Islands using input—output techniques and several alternative assumptions on endogeneity of final demand components. The paper also estimates, under the same assumptions, the effects on the economy of a 10% fall in tourist flows. Climbing 'Fourteeners', peaks whose summits rise above 14,000 feet, is a popular recreational activity in Colorado. Access to these popular peaks has been jeopardized by liability issues on privately owned peaks and by overuse on publicly owned peaks. To date, there has been little analysis on the economic benefits provided by Fourteeners. This study finds that opening access to three closed peaks presents an infusion into local and state economies of 25 and 45 jobs, respectively. Access to the peaks is worth US$167 per person each trip; a relatively high value in the context of the recreation economics literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article develops a method for establishing water prices and their effects in order to provide policy makers an environmentally and socially optimal range of regional prices for irrigation water. Two prices are determined. The “environmentally optimal price” of water is defined as the one that internalizes the environmental costs generated by agricultural consumption. The “social optimally price” of water is defined as the one that maximizes levies on water for agriculture without affecting the regional economy. The environmentally optimal price is calculated with an economic model built over a Geographical Information System (GIS) that allows the economic quantification and valuation of the environmental cost of water in different basins. The optimal price is calculated with a demand curve for irrigation water introduced into a Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) to observe if the regional economy can accept higher prices without affecting the regional GDP. Potential water prices are established, ranging from prices that minimize the negative impact in the regional economy to those that totally internalize the environmental cost of water. The ability to measure the economic importance of cooperatives to communities is not purely an academic question. Policy makers, cooperative organizations, and community development practitioners are increasingly asking for such information. The most commonly used methodology is input-output analysis. The limitations of input-output analysis when applied to cooperatives have not yet been comprehensively explained in the literature, although they significantly affect the application of the mode] as well as the interpretation of results. We discuss five issues that need to be addressed when using input-output models and suggest additional analysis that should be completed to gain an accurate assessment of the local economic impact of cooperatives. Ragnar Frisch claimed on various occasions that he had invented the principles of input–output analysis. Frisch and Leontief worked simultaneously on their respective contributions but within different contexts. Frisch's contribution was an attempt to cope with market collapse of the depression and thus arose from a different motivation than Leontief's equilibrium analysis. Although prominently published in Econometrica in 1934, Frisch's ‘circulation planning’ has not been much discussed in the literature. The paper sets out the analytic core of Frisch's contribution and its formal similarity with Wassily Leontief's input–output analysis, which was the basis for Frisch's claim.
