Optics-based measurement systems have been developed to measure the voltage and the current on a load of the Seoul National University X-pinch device [Ryu et al., Rev. Sci. Instrum. 92, 053533 (2021)]. A lithium niobate crystal that changes the polarization state of the propagating laser beam due to the Pockels effect induced by the electric field across the crystal, thus capable of measuring the voltage, is located next to the load. For the current measurement, an optic fiber is wound around the load to detect the change in the polarization state of the propagating laser beam due to the Faraday rotation induced by the magnetic field. As both voltage and current measurement systems utilize optical effects, the sensors, i.e., the lithium niobate crystal and the optic fiber, do not require any electrical grounds, in contrast to circuit-based probes, such as voltage dividers or Rogowski grooves. This facilitates an easy access to shield other required electronic devices, such as lasers and photodetectors, from the electromagnetic interference generated by the X-pinch power system. In addition, the sensors can be placed in close proximity to the load with fewer concerns on the electrical insulation. A multichannel soft X-ray (SXR) array has been developed to measure the electron temperature in the Versatile Experiment Spherical Torus (VEST). To estimate electron temperature using the two-filter method applied to SXR intensity, we designed a pinhole camera that has two photodiode arrays with different metallic filters. We also adopted a filter wheel and tested various filter parameters to find the optimal filter set. Through tests, the combination of aluminum and beryllium was found to be the most suitable for the current experimental conditions in VEST. The filtered SXR signals were acquired with a low-noise preamplifier, exhibiting sufficient signal-to-noise ratios for electron temperature estimation based on the intensity ratio of two signals obtained with different filters. The estimated electron temperature from the developed two-filter SXR array showed reasonably matched levels and consistent trends with Thomson scattering measurements. This paper presents the results of the azimuthal and axial wave diagnostics of a partially magnetized E × B Penning source. Various probes were employed, namely, a two-tip probe for azimuthal waves and two- and four-probe arrays for axial waves, to investigate the spatial characteristics of the instability using a two-point probe technique. The azimuthally aligned tips of the two-tip probe facilitated the investigation of the evolution of the azimuthal dispersion relation, which exhibited a well-known azimuthally propagative spoke at low discharge voltages. By utilizing axially aligned four-probe arrays with a probe distance of 3 mm and two-probe arrays with a relatively long probe distance of 20 mm, we sought to determine whether the rotating spoke propagated in the axial direction in the cylindrical E × B source. Our findings suggest that the rotating spoke originated near the axial center and propagated toward each cathode, rotating in a direction tilted from the azimuthal direction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We estimate the parameters of a Cu plasma generated by an X-pinch by comparing experimentally measured x-rays with synthetic data. A filtered absolute extreme ultraviolet diode array is used to measure time-resolved x-ray spectra with a spectral resolution of ∼1 keV in the energy range of 1–10 keV. The synthetic spectra of Cu plasmas with different electron temperatures, electron densities, and fast electron fractions are calculated using the FLYCHK code. For quantitative comparison with the measured spectrum, two x-ray power ratios with three different spectral ranges are calculated. We observe three x-ray bursts in X-pinch experiments with two Cu wires conducted on the SNU X-pinch at a current rise rate of ∼0.2 kA/ns. Analysis of the spectra reveals that the first burst comprises x-rays emitted by hot spots and electron beams, with characteristics similar to those observed in other X-pinches. The second and third bursts are both generated by long-lived electron beams formed after the neck structure has been completely depleted. In the second burst, the formation of the electron beam is accompanied by an increase in the electron density of the background plasma. Therefore, the long-lived electron beams generate the additional strong x-ray bursts while maintaining a plasma channel in the central region of the X-pinch. Moreover, they emit many hard x-rays (HXRs), enabling the SNU X-pinch to be used as an HXR source. A new soft x-ray (SXR) array diagnostic system has been developed on versatile experiment spherical torus (VEST) for measurements of 2D SXR emissivity profile and identification of poloidal mode structure. Through tomographic inversion techniques, 2D SXR emissivity profile can be acquired from the line-integrated SXR data, which enables the visualization of mode structure of plasma instability, such as the magnetohydrodynamics mode. The SXR array diagnostic system consists of two 20-channel arrays positioned at the middle and the top on the same poloidal plane for horizontal and vertical lines of sight, respectively. Each array of the diagnostic system uses absolute extreme ultraviolet photodiode array as the detector. To apply appropriate filters (up to four) for different energy regimes without breaking the vacuum, a filter wheel and its rotatable vacuum feed-through are installed behind the pinhole. SXR data are acquired with a digitizer at the sampling rate of up to 125 MHz. Finally, we discuss initial measurement data obtained from Ohmic plasma in VEST. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A transmission line is discussed for application in an underwater spark-discharge technique in the cleaning of a horizontal well by incorporating a power-transmission model into the simulation. The pulsed-spark-discharge technique has been proposed for clogged-well rehabilitation, because it removes incrustations that are attached to well screens by using strong pressure waves that are generated by the rapid expansion of a spark channel. To apply the pulsed-spark-discharge technique to the cleaning of horizontal wells, the coaxial cable between the pulsed power supply and the spark gap as a load needs to be extended to a few hundred meters. Prior to field application, pulsed-spark-discharge experiments were conducted and the role of the transmission line was examined using an improved simulation model. In the model, a non-linear interaction of the spark channel and the capacitor bank is described by the pulse-forming action of the coaxial cable. Based on the accurate physical properties of the water plasma, such as the equation of state and electrical conductivity within the region of interest, the amount of energy contributed to the development of a shock wave was evaluated. The simulation shows that if the initial conditions of the spark channel are the same, no further reduction in strength of the pressure wave occurs, even if the cable length is increased above 50 m. Hence, the degraded peak pressure that was observed in the experiments using the longer cable is attributed to a change in the initial condition of the spark channel. The parametric study suggests that the low initial charging voltage, the high ambient water pressure, and the long cable length yield the low initial spark-channel density, which results in a reduced peak pressure. This paper investigates wire X-pinch (WXP) evolutions by the Eulerian resistive magneto-hydrodynamic code, STHENO, on 2D/3D geometry. A single-fluid two-temperature model is applied to pinch plasmas in local thermal equilibrium. The equation of state based on the Thomas–Fermi model is used to determine the ionization degree of the plasma. Electron internal energy is determined by the local density, temperature, and ionization potential with the average ion charge state. Lee–More–Desjarlais transport models are employed to obtain the thermal conductivities and resistivity for a non-ideal plasma. The radiation loss rate is calculated by the Bremsstrahlung and recombination emissivity within the ionization balance. The crossing point, which is the central part of the X-pinch, is assumed to be an axisymmetric configuration on a small computational domain in the RZ plane. The 2D simulation demonstrates that the micrometer size plasma column is elongated axially with the onset of the neck cascading structure. The radiation power is calculated and compared with the measured x-ray power from a modular X-pinch device (120-kA in 650-ns) at Seoul National University. The time evolution of the radiation power reproduces the trend of the measured x ray. 3D analyses are performed for the aluminum WXP configurations by varying wire numbers and cross-angles. The relation between the radiation performance and the numbers of wires reveals that the current density, rather than the line density, determines the central pinching condition. In addition, the multiple plasma instabilities (m = 0) near the central regions are found to degrade the radiation performance on the small cross-angle WXP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When a surface ship utilizes a hull-mounted sonar (HMS) to search for a target located in the water at sea, the maneuver path of the surface ship depends on the maximum detection range of the sonar. Because sonar utilizes sound waves, it is significantly influenced by the marine environment and the detection probability depends on the location and sound wave incident angle of the target. This study aims to calculate the detection probability by applying the actual marine environment, and proposes an optimal search path calculation method that maximizes the detection probability based on a genetic algorithm. Local helicity injection (LHI) is a non-inductive startup and current drive method via Taylor relaxation for the spherical torus. In achieving Taylor relaxation, it has been suggested that kink instability in 3D helical flux ropes plays an important role. However, the role and occurrence of kink instability during LHI have yet to be validated. Experimentally, determining the kink mode in a flux rope relies on measuring internal information using a probe. However, for LHI, the 3D geometry complicates this measurement process. Here, we propose a new approach for determining the kink modes of 3D helical flux ropes without any internal probe measurements. It is confirmed by this approach that flux ropes exhibit two different kink modes. With increasing plasma current in the flux ropes, a transition from the coherent internal kink mode to the external kink mode is observed. Kink mode properties such as rotating frequency calculated from the kink theory agree well with the magnetic signature driven by the kink mode. During the LHI experiment in the versatile experiment spherical torus, three distinguishable phases are confirmed by the approach, consistent with NIMROD simulation. Before driving the toroidal plasma current, the external kink mode is observed for 3D helical flux ropes. As the toroidal plasma current increases, the external kink mode disappears while generating broadband internal modes instead of coherent internal kink of flux ropes. Decoupling between the toroidal plasma and flux rope results in both decay of toroidal plasma current and re-appearance of the external kink mode in the flux ropes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a simple but quite accurate numerical model for analyzing electrical explosion of copper wires in water. The numerical model solves a circuit equation coupled with one-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) equations with the help of appropriate wide-range equation of state (EOS) and electrical conductivity for copper. The MHD equations are formulated in a Lagrangian form to identify the interface between the wire and surrounding water clearly. A quotidian EOS (QEOS) that is known as the simplest form of EOS is utilized to build wide-range EOS for copper. In the QEOS, we consider the liquid-vapor phase transition, which is critical in analyzing the wire explosion system. For the electrical conductivity of copper, a semi-empirical set of equations covering from solid state to partially ionized plasma state are employed. Experimental validation has been performed with copper wires of various diameters, which are exploded by a microsecond timescale pulsed capacitive discharge. The simulation results show excellent agreements with the experimental results in terms of temporal motions of a plasma channel boundary and a shock front as well as current and voltage waveforms. It is found that the wire explodes (vaporizes) along the liquid branch of a binodal curve irrespective of wire dimension and operating voltage. After the explosion, the wire becomes a plasma state right away or after the current pause (dwell), depending on the operating conditions. It is worth noting that such a peculiar characteristic of wire explosion, i.e., current pause and restrike, is well simulated with the present numerical model. In particular, it is shown that the wire cools down along the vapor branch of the binodal curve during the current dwell, due to a significant difference of thermodynamic characteristics across the binodal curve. The influence of radiation for studying nonideal plasmas with a wire explosion technique and a physical process for shock wave formation by an exploding wire is discussed as well. This paper presents the electrical conductivity data of copper along the gas branch of the binodal curve in the warm dense matter (WDM) regime as a function of mass density and temperature. All data are obtained using the underwater wire explosion technique, in which vaporized copper cools along the gas branch of the binodal curve during the period of current dwell after the wire explodes. Mass density and temperature are measured by fast imaging and optical spectroscopy, respectively. Combining these data with electrical measurements of the wire resistance, we obtain the conductivities of copper along the binodal curve in the WDM regime. Ability to control the electric potential inside the plasma is promising for various applications of E × B plasma because the trajectory of particles, which meets the desired purpose, is mainly determined by the drift motions in the external electric and magnetic fields. In the E × B source, it is well known that the equilibrium states and plasma density and temperature gradient can be sources of plasma instability, which, in turn, affects global plasma parameters. However, the effect of instability on the electric potential has not been verified so far. In this work, correlation of the plasma potential and instability is investigated through simplified-circuit modeling. The consideration of the transverse conductivity of electrons across the magnetic field reflecting the turbulence collision frequency well explains the plasma potential closer to the anode potential despite the presence of negatively biased cathodes. This paper describes an X-pinch device recently developed at Seoul National University (SNU). The SNU X-pinch device is designed and fabricated to accommodate various diagnostics as well as conduct versatile experiments. It is easy to change the capacitance of the pulse generator because the capacitor bank has a modular design without insulation oil or gas. This allows us to perform a variety of experiments with a wide capacitance range from 80 to 800 nF. The operating voltage of the SNU X-pinch device is controlled from 20 to 100 kV by adjusting the gas pressure inside a triggered spark-gap switch. Triggering of the spark-gap switch is synchronized with the operation of a pulsed laser to diagnose the X-pinch plasma at the proper time. A large vacuum chamber precisely machined from an aluminum mono-block is attached to the top of the pulse generator. It is designed to accommodate not only various X-pinch loads but also various diagnostic apparatus such as optical components. Initial experiments with the SNU X-pinch device have successfully generated x rays with wires of various materials and sizes. The device will be used not only to explore the dynamics of X-pinch plasmas but also as a test stand for diagnostics of high-energy-density plasmas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An ultrafast charge exchange spectroscopy (UFCES) system has been designed for measuring fluctuations in ion temperature and toroidal rotation velocity. The UFCES on the KSTAR tokamak is a powerful tool for investigating plasma instabilities and long-wavelength turbulence related to ion temperature gradient and flow. The UFCES system is designed to measure the C VI line (n = 8 → 7, λ0 = 529.05 nm) from the charge exchange reaction between a deuterium-heating neutral beam and the intrinsic carbon impurity in KSTAR. The ion temperature and toroidal rotation velocity at two radial positions will be observed simultaneously with UFCES. The key difference between the UFCES system and conventional charge exchange spectrometers is the application of high-throughput collection optics, a high-efficiency transmission grating combined with prisms, and a high-speed detector. We use a comprehensive spectrum simulation code with input parameters of KSTAR's plasmas and a neutral beam injection system to estimate the performance of the designed UFCES system. The results simulated with the code show that the diagnostic achieves a turbulence-relevant time resolution of 10 µs with a high enough signal-to-noise ratio. Furthermore, a preliminary test is performed using a complementary metal–oxide semiconductor camera and Ne spectral lamp to confirm the linear dispersion and curvature radius. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We develop a filtered absolute extreme ultraviolet (AXUV) diode array to measure the time evolution of the soft x-ray spectrum in the energy range of 1–10 keV. AXUV–HS5, the detector, has a fast rise time of 0.7 ns, a wide energy detection range, and high accessibility. We use Geant4 simulations to design an appropriate filter set for flat-and-sharp virtual channels (VCs), where a filter with no spectral edge removes large tails of the response curves. A Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) method, sensitive to the expected spectral function, is improved to reliably generate a continuous radiation spectrum, by utilizing spectral information from the least-squares (LS) method that reconstructs a discrete spectrum with low spectral resolution directly from the VCs. We test the filtered AXUV diode array on an X-pinch device with a peak current of 140 kA at Seoul National University; the array with ten channels is installed in a vacuum chamber. For a two-wire 40 μm stainless steel X-pinch, x-ray power, radiation temperature, and the reconstructed x-ray spectrum are obtained from the filtered AXUV diode array by the combined LS–LM method. Determination of the polytropic index of plasma in a magnetic field provides description of plasma physics ranging from laboratory plasma in the Earth to black hole in the Universe. Accordingly, a lot of efforts have been devoted to revealing the dependence of polytropic index of plasma on magnetic field. A recent experiment performed in a magnetic nozzle reported the dependency of the polytropic index on the magnetic field strength in that the polytropic index changes from 5/3 to unity with decreasing the magnetic field strength. In this letter, we show that the polytropic index of plasma does not depend on magnetic field if the radial electric field is sustained. The polytropic index is measured to be close to 2, higher than the previously reported value, regardless of the change in the strength and configuration of magnetic field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A Thomson scattering (TS) system has been utilized to measure the electron temperature and density of the core region of Versatile Experiment Spherical Torus (VEST). Recently, the laser injection system is successfully upgraded adopting the burst laser with the repetition rate of 1 kHz and the energy of 2 J. Furthermore, improved collection optics with additional polychromators and a 32-channel fast digitizer are prepared to observe the fast time evolution of radial profiles. This improvement is essential to study fast phenomena such as internal reconnection event (IRE). We increase the TS signal and reduce the stray light by introducing new filters having better optical properties such as high optical density at 1064 nm, transmission, and reflectance. Moreover, the optimum reverse bias voltages are newly set to make the system operational independent of the background radiation. As a result, 1 kHz radial profiles of the core electron temperature and density are measured for the first time, showing characteristics of IREs in VEST. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Having a sub-ns response time and not requiring physical contacts to the measurement points, a voltage measurement system based on the Pockels electro-optic effect, referred to as a PE (Pockels effect)-based voltmeter, is widely used for pulsed high voltage devices such as accelerators and X-pinch systems. To correct for the misalignment of a Pockels cell and the transmittance ratio of a beam splitter, a polar-coordinate-based data analysis scheme has been proposed. This scheme also overcomes a limitation on the measurable range of a PE-based voltmeter without ambiguity and can measure the half-wave voltage of a Pockels cell. We present an improved polar-coordinate-based data analysis scheme using an ellipse fitting method, which can correct for misalignments of all the optics components of a PE-based voltmeter while keeping the advantages of the previous scheme. We show the results of the improved data analysis scheme for measuring a slowly modulated voltage up to approximately 5 kV in about 30 s and a pulsed high voltage up to 7 kV with a rise time of less than 20 ns. Discharge with an external magnetic field is promising for various applications of low-temperature plasmas from electric propulsion to semiconductor processes owing to high plasma density. It is essential to understand plasma transport across the magnetic field because plasma confinement under the field is based on strong magnetization of light electrons, maintaining quasi-neutrality through the inertial response of unmagnetized ions. In such a partially magnetized plasma, different degrees of magnetization between electrons and ions can create instability and make the confinement and transport mechanisms more complex. Theoretical studies have suggested a link between the instability of various frequency ranges and plasma confinement, whereas experimental work has not been done so far. Here, we experimentally study the magnetic confinement properties of a partially magnetized plasma considering instability. The plasma properties show non-uniform characteristics as the magnetic field increases, indicating enhanced magnetic confinement. However, the strengthened electric field at the edge of the plasma column gives rise to the Simon–Hoh instability, limiting the plasma confinement. The variation of the edge-to-center plasma density ratio (h-factor) with the magnetic field clearly reveals the transition of the transport regime through triggering of the instability. This article presents time-resolved analysis of SF6 arc plasma generated in a laboratory-scale model chamber prepared for studying the characteristics of a circuit breaker. During the arc discharge, the optical emission spectra are measured by a high-speed spectrometer under various operating conditions. The time-resolved electron temperature and density values are determined using the well-known Boltzmann plot and Stark broadening methods, respectively, for the measured Cu I, S II, and F I emission lines. Moreover, the temporal evolution of the electrical conductivity of the arc plasma is deduced from the measured electron temperature and density values, depending on the operating conditions. In our experimental conditions, it is revealed that the electrical conductivity of arc plasmas is mainly determined by Coulomb (electron–ion) collisions as opposed to electron–neutral collisions due to the much higher Coulomb collision frequency compared to the electron–neutral collision frequency. Both the electron temperature and density were found to increase when the discharge current is increased at a fixed gas pressure, resulting in an increase of the electrical conductivity. When the gas pressure inside the model chamber is increased, the electron density is increased as well, but the electrical conductivity does not change significantly due to the slight change in the electron temperature. The present study will be helpful for investigating the performance capabilities of circuit breakers because the electrical conductivity, the most important parameter to guarantee successful circuit breaking at points near the current-zero, is determined by the temperature and density of the electrons. A deep understanding of the kinetic properties of the electrons in a magnetic nozzle (MN), which is attracting attention as an acceleration stage for thrusters, is of great significance as it directly contributes to the development of the MN performance. In the sense that a conversion of the electron momentum to the ion kinetic energy determines the characteristics of the MN, fundamental research on the kinetic feature of a magnetically expanding plasma has focused on the spatial distribution of the electron properties and proposed directions to the desired application. Unlike the common perception of this importance, various research groups have proposed contradictory arguments based on their theoretical approaches regarding the ion beam acceleration from the viewpoint of heat flow of electrons. We point out that the main reason for the absence of a theoretical consensus for the nozzle efficiency improvements arises from the lack of the clear interpretation of the plasma properties by focusing only on the final state of the electrons. In this Letter, time-resolved measurement of the electron energy distributions has been performed to grasp a detailed series of expansion processes. It has been revealed that the effective potential well gradually formed by the self-generated electric field acts as a limiting factor in the motion of electrons; this effect attributes to the changes of the electron energy distribution represented as the accumulation of the trapped electrons. The accumulation over the entire region diminishes the degree of the cooling rate of a system and decreases the electric field in the downstream region initially generated by the adiabatic expansion. The present study emphasizes that the kinetic features of an MN are strongly affected by the non-stationary motion of the trapped electrons; thus, the temporal behavior of the trapped electrons must be considered for prediction and analysis of nozzle performances. A gating device is a critical component in a time-of-flight (TOF) ion mass analyzer for identifying ion species extracted from ion sources according to their mass-to-charge ratio. It consists of several concentric ring electrodes to deflect as many ions as possible within a very short gate time, thus increasing the ion current collected in a Faraday cup. In this study, we further improve the ion collection efficiency of the gating device by minimizing potential distortion along the paths of ions, by modifying the structure of gate electrodes and applying a bipolar gate pulse on them. Using the improved gating device, we find that the ion beam current increased by nearly 50% compared to the conventional one without changing the noise level. The improved TOF system is well applied to identify the spectrum of ion species extracted from a cold cathode Penning ion source, depending on the operating conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Experimental investigation of lower hybrid fast wave (LHFW) coupling and propagation is carried out by wave measurements utilizing magnetic probes in Versatile Experiment Spherical Torus. Coupling experiments are conducted in marginal ( n e ≥ n confluence ) and prohibited ( n e ≫ n confluence ) regimes for fast wave coupling. In the marginal regime of Ip = 25 kA, about two folds of n ∥ -upshift are observed. The propagation path of the fast wave is largely modified compared to that of full wave simulation, and more fast waves are detected inside the last-closed-flux surface despite the unsatisfied accessibility condition. Since spectral broadening is measured to be narrow and linearly proportional to coupled wave power with a high density fluctuation of about 20% in the frequency range ( ω 0 / ω l h ∼ 15), it is thought to be crucially correlated with wave scattering rather than parametric decay instabilities. Consequently, the spectral broadening implicates that n ∥ -upshift can take place via a wave scattering mechanism. In the prohibited regime of Ip = 100 kA, more enhanced coupling of up to 90% is observed with similar density fluctuation to that of the marginal regime, which is explained with intensified wave scattering due to the high dielectric constant of spherical torus plasmas. It is concluded that practical windows for propagation and coupling of LHFW are widened with the aid of n ∥ -upshift via wave scattering even though the accessibility condition is not satisfied right in front of the antenna. The fast wave branch in lower hybrid resonance frequency range, especially higher than 2 ω l h , has been proposed for the central or off-axis electron heating and current drive in higher density plasmas than the slow wave scheme. With a higher cutoff density for launching, efficient coupling between the antenna and plasma would be a priority issue for feasibility. The fast wave coupling characteristics with the wave frequency, gap size, and electron density profile of the Versatile Experiment Spherical Torus (VEST) device are investigated using a commercial full wave FEM solver, COMSOL. Maximum coupling between combline antenna and plasma is expected to be at ∼500 MHz with n ∥ ∼ 4.5. The coupled power ranges from 90% to 60% in the gap size between 0.5 cm and 1.5 cm. The relative power fraction of the fast wave is larger than 80% at these conditions. The propagation and coupling power of the fast wave is crucially dependent on the plasma density window by launching and confluence densities. Initial experimental result with low power shows that measured coupling efficiency starts to increase as electron density in front of antenna attains the level of cutoff density for the fast wave propagation. It varies from 30% to 90% with the edge density evolution, which is consistent with the coupling simulation using the measured edge density profile. Nanospheres of perovskite manganite La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO) were prepared using porous carbon replica as a template. Close-packed arrays of silica spheres were infiltrated with a sucrose solution, which was then carbonized. After removal of the silica template, pores in the replica were filled with metal acetate precursors. The filled replica was sintered at 800 °C. The resulting hollow LCMO nanospheres were characterized by magnetization, electrical transport, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscope measurements. Feasibility of using conventional photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs) without a scintillator as an ex-vessel radiation detector in a tokamak environment is studied. Basic irradiation tests using standard gamma ray sources and a d-d neutron generator showed that the PMT is responding both to gamma photons and neutrons, possibly due to the direct generation of secondary electrons inside the PMT by the impingement of high energy photons. Because of the selective sensitivity of the PMT to hard x-ray and neutrons in ohmic and neutral beam injected plasmas, respectively, it is shown that the PMT with certain configuration can be utilized either to monitor the fluctuation in the fusion neutron generation rate or to study the behavior of runaway electrons in tokamaks. A new hysteresis‐current‐controlled buck converter with alternating current (AC) sensing techniques is presented in this Letter. The proposed AC sensing technique senses the inductor current ripple by sensing the voltage at two terminals of the inductor. Accompanying with hysteresis‐current‐controlled technique and a type‐III compensator, the transient response can be accelerated. Pre-ionization experiments with pure toroidal field have been carried out in VEST (Versatile Experiment Spherical Torus) to investigate the feasibility of direct XB mode conversion from perpendicular LFS (Low Field Side) injection for efficient pre-ionization. Pre-ionization plasmas are studied by measuring the electron density and temperature profiles with respect to microwave power and toroidal field strength, and 2D full wave cold plasma simulation using the COMSOL Multiphysics is performed for the comparison. It is experimentally figured out that exceeding the threshold microwave power (>3 kW), the parametric decay and localized collisional heating is observed near the UHR (Upper Hybrid Resonance), and the efficient XB mode conversion can be achieved in both short density scale length (Ln) and magnetic scale length (LB) region positioned at outboard and inboard sides, respectively. From the 2D full wave simulations, the reflection and tunneling of X-wave near the R-cutoff layer according to the measured electron density profiles are analyzed with electric field polarization and power flow. Threshold electric field and wave power density for parametric decay are evaluated at least more than 4.8×104V/m and 100 W/cm², respectively. This study shows that efficient pre-ionization schemes using direct XB mode conversion can be realized by considering the key factors such as Ln, LB, and transmitted wave power at the UHR. Electron density profiles of versatile experiment spherical torus plasmas are measured by using a hydrogen line intensity ratio method. A fast-frame visible camera with appropriate bandpass filters is used to detect images of Balmer line intensities. The unique optical system makes it possible to take images of Hα and Hβ radiation simultaneously, with only one camera. The frame rate is 1000 fps and the spatial resolution of the system is about 0.5 cm. One-dimensional local emissivity profiles have been obtained from the toroidal line of sight with viewing dumps. A new and simple method for determining the degree of dissociation in hydrogen plasmas is presented. In this method, wide-range spectrum covering from an atomic H-γ line (434.05 nm) to molecular Fulcher-α band (600-640 nm) is measured simultaneously by a wide-range miniature spectrometer. Since the wide-range spectrum measured by the miniature spectrometer is too broadened to resolve respective lines in the Fulcher-α band, a synthetic spectrum method is applied to improve the accuracy in the Q-branch of Fulcher-α band intensity measurement. In order to reduce the influence from other transitions or anomalous P- and R-branch of Fulcher-α spectrum, the Fulcher-α spectra of which vibrational states are higher than 1 (?≥ 1) are synthesized using the rotational temperature obtained by the 0-0 Fulcher-α spectrum. The degree of dissociation is determined from the intensity ratio between H-γ line and the synthesized Fulcher-α band spectrum. A comparative study carried out in a volume-produced negative hydrogen ion source shows that the degree of dissociation determined by this method agrees well with the measured values using a spectrometer with high spectral resolution. The present method is expected to be useful to characterize the plasma sources with molecular species since it provides important parameters for understanding neutral particle behaviors. Background: A patient whose spinal cord was damaged due to accident may result in Tetraplegia or lose the ability to control his/her daily living environment. Currently, patients must use an invasive tool tongue movement, to help the patient communicate with the external environment.Objective: This study designed a non-invasive tongue movement computer mouse system that allows the patient to use tongue movement to control a computer to communicate with the external environment.Methods: Via a pressure sensor and assistive holder designed in this study, the pressure sensor can be moved using the assistive holder close to the mylohyoid muscle of the patient's lower jaw. The changes in pressure from the mylohyoid muscle are converted into computer mouse control signals to control a computer to communicate with the external environment.Results: This study is based on ISO9241-Part 9 to design four kinds of training modes with varying difficulties. The data were collected from five able persons participating in the test over 7 days. The data includes throughput, path efficiency, test completion time and reaction time. The data verifies that the proposed system is stable and practical for persons with disabilities.Conclusion: The non-invasive computer mouse system for sensing tongue movement can completely breakthrough the limitations of the invasive tongue movement sensing system. Transverse magnetic filter field as well as operating pressure is considered to be an important control knob to enhance negative hydrogen ion production via plasma parameter optimization in volume-produced negative hydrogen ion sources. Stronger filter field to reduce electron temperature sufficiently in the extraction region is favorable, but generally known to be limited by electron density drop near the extraction region. In this study, unexpected electron density increase instead of density drop is observed in front of the extraction region when the applied transverse filter field increases monotonically toward the extraction aperture. Measurements of plasma parameters with a movable Langmuir probe indicate that the increased electron density may be caused by low energy electron accumulation in the filter region decreasing perpendicular diffusion coefficients across the increasing filter field. Negative hydrogen ion populations are estimated from the measured profiles of electron temperatures and densities and confirmed to be consistent with laser photo-detachment measurements of the H- populations for various filter field strengths and pressures. Enhanced H- population near the extraction region due to the increased low energy electrons in the filter region may be utilized to increase negative hydrogen beam currents by moving the extraction position accordingly. This new finding can be used to design efficient H- sources with an optimal filtering system by maximizing high energy electron filtering while keeping low energy electrons available in the extraction region. The influence of magnetic filter field on plasma properties in the heating region has been investigated in a planar-type inductively coupled radio-frequency (RF) H- ion source. Besides filtering high energy electrons near the extraction region, the magnetic filter field is clearly observed to increase the electron temperature in the heating region at low pressure discharge. With increasing the operating pressure, enhancement of electron temperature in the heating region is reduced. The possibility of electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) heating in the heating region due to stray magnetic field generated by a filter magnet located at the extraction region is examined. It is found that ECR heating by RF wave field in the discharge region, where the strength of an axial magnetic field is approximately ~4.8 G, can effectively heat low energy electrons. Depletion of low energy electrons in the electron energy distribution function measured at the heating region supports the occurrence of ECR heating. The present study suggests that addition of axial magnetic field as small as several G by an external electromagnet or permanent magnets can greatly increase the generation of highly ro-vibrationally excited hydrogen molecules in the heating region, thus improving the performance of H- ion generation in volume-produced negative hydrogen ion sources. Aim To evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of glutamine and the underlying signal pathway mechanisms in lipopolysaccharide ( LPS)-stimulated human dental pulp cells ( HDPCs). Methods Human dental pulp cells were exposed to 10 μg mL−1 LPS and various concentrations of glutamine for 24 h. The production of PGE2 and nitric oxide was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay ( ELISA) and Griess reagent kit, respectively. Cytokines were examined by ELISA, reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction ( RT-PCR) and real-time PCR. i NOS and COX protein expression as well as signal pathways were accessed by Western blot. The data were analysed by anova with Bonferroni's test (α = 0.05). Results Glutamine reduced LPS-induced iNOS and COX-2 protein expression as well as production of NO and PGE2 in a dose-dependent fashion. Additionally, glutamine suppressed the production and m RNA expression of inflammatory cytokines including interleukin-1β ( IL-1β), TNF-α, and IL-8. Furthermore, glutamine attenuated phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase ( ERK), p38, c-Jun N-terminal kinase ( JNK) and IκB-α, and nuclear translocation of NF- kB p65, but enhanced mitogen-activated protein kinase phosphatase-1 ( MKP-1) expression in LPS-treated HDPCs. Purpose Socially assistive robots (SARs) are utilized to help older adults requiring cognitive support such as affective therapy, cognitive training, and social-skill enhancement (Feil-Seifer & Mataric., 2005). In addition, the SAR has advantages in providing home-based healthcare services since it can become intimate with its users, allow verbal and non-verbal interactions, and enable timely monitoring (Abdi, Al-Hindawi, Ng & Vizcaychipi, 2018). Meanwhile, poor IAQ (Indoor air quality) can adversely affect health and thus require IAQ management (WHO, 2010). The elderly with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) spends more time indoors, so they are affected by the indoor air quality (IAQ) and require the management of IAQ. Therefore, we developed a SAR platform by networking the IAQ sensor, weather open API, conversation engine, and SAR to provide air quality alerts and support patients in activities that can improve or maintain IAQ. We evaluated whether the ability to management of older adults is improved through IAQ alerts. Additionally, we provided personalized instructions on inhaler usage and confirmed whether clinical indicators were improved. Method We conducted an unblinded, single group, observational pilot test and assessed the feasibility of the IoT-based SAR system. Sixteen patients with COPD (n=l6) participated in the study. The pilot study persisted for 16 weeks. For 8 weeks in the first phase, participants utilized a SAR with an IAQ sensor. During the 8 weeks of the second phase, voice message alerts concerning inhaler use were plated by SAR. Results and Discussion Results from machine learning indicate that the SAR platform can assist older adults to control IAQ by giving alerts. And, the alerts may improve the capability of older adults to maintain IAQ. In addition, after receiving the instructions on inhaler use, adherence to inhaler usage (TAI) was significantly improved (z=-1.98, P=0.048), and the breathlessness scale was significantly decreased (z=-2112, P=0.035). The results present empirical evidence that SAR integrated with environmental alarm systems is helpful in the behavioral change of the patients. An internal magnetic probe using Hall sensors to measure a current density profile directly with perturbation of less than 10% to the plasma current is successfully operated for the first time in Versatile Experiment Spherical Torus (VEST). An appropriate Hall sensor is chosen to produce sufficient signals for VEST magnetic field while maintaining the small size of 10 mm in outer diameter. Temperature around the Hall sensor in a typical VEST plasma is regulated by blown air of 2 bars. PurposeTo evaluate the refractive outcomes in children treated after intravitreal injection of bevacizumab (IVB) for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).MethodsA retrospective, bi-centre study of 34 patients (64 eyes) was conducted. The patients were divided into three groups, patients received intravitreal IVB (IVB group), patients received combined IVB and laser treatment (IVB+Laser group), or patients received lens-sparing vitrectomy (IVB+LSV group). Cycloplegic refraction and axial length (AXL) were evaluated at 2 years old.ResultsThe prevalences of myopia and high myopia were 47.5 and 10.0% in the IVB group, respectively, which were lower than those in the IVB+Laser (82.4 and 29.4%) and IVB+LSV (all 100%) groups (P=0.001 and P<0.001). The prevalences of emmetropia in the IVB group, IVB+Laser group, and IVB+LSV group were 50, 5.9, and 0% (P=0.001). The AXL were similar among all groups.ConclusionsAt the 2-year follow-up, severe ROP patients treated with IVB alone were more likely to remain emmetropic and had lower prevalences of myopia and high myopia. BACKGROUND: Hemiplegia can cause accidental falls, as the patients place their arms in front of their chests or next to the hips when they walk. This is due to limitations in the ability to swing their arms during walking. OBJECTIVE: This study proposes a functional electrical stimulator approach in order to improve the foot drop and abnormal movement of the upper limbs during walking. The goal of this study is to verify the feasibility of improving the foot drop and arm swing problems of hemiplegic patients using electrical stimulators in a clinical trial. METHODS: The present study utilizes a functional electrical stimulator found on the market. The stimulator is controlling the gait and arm swing of the patient while the patient is walking. It can help him or her restore regular gait cycles and arm swings. The FES device can also train the patient to walk safely and regain control of his or her arm swing. After the four-week training, the subjects had to walk 10 meters without the FES system. The step length, step time, and joint goniograms were recorded in order to determine whether there was any improvement. RESULTS: After the four-week training was concluded, the three post-stroke patients showed an improvement in arm swing angle when walking. The improvement was found to be 7.16% in the first patient, 43.06% in the second, and 54.66% in the third. These results are all statistically significant. The t-test had a p-value 0.012 (p< 0.05), which demonstrated that the method used in the present study had the potential to significantly improve the arm swing of post-stroke patients. CONCLUSIONS: The present study showed that a traditional foot drop functional electrical stimulator providing stimulation also to the patient's upper limbs, while being triggered by a foot switch under his or her heel, can help the patient to swing the arms and reduce the foot drop. The method has significant effect on traditional foot drop therapy. The XB mode conversion in electron cyclotron resonance frequency heating has been studied in detail through 1D full wave simulation. The field pattern depends on the density scale length, and the wave absorption near upper hybrid resonance is maximized beyond the R(X) mode cutoff density for optimized density scale length. The simulated mode conversion efficiency has been compared with that of an analytic formula, showing good agreements except for the phase dependent term of the X wave. The mode conversion efficiency is calculated for oblique injections as well, and it is found that the efficiency decreases as the injection angles increases. Short magnetic field scale length is confirmed to relax the short density scale length condition maximizing the XB mode conversion efficiency. Generation of helium ions is experimentally investigated with a constricted direct current (DC) plasma ion source operated at layered-glow mode, in which electrons could be accelerated through multiple potential structures so as to generate helium ions including He2+ by successive ionization collisions in front of an extraction aperture. The helium discharge is sustained with the formation of a couple of stable layers and the plasma ball with high density is created near the extraction aperture at the operational pressure down to 0.6 Torr with concave cathodes. The ion beam current extracted with an extraction voltage of 5 kV is observed to be proportional to the discharge current and inversely proportional to the operating pressure, showing high current density of 130 mA/cm² and power density of 0.52 mA/cm²/W. He2+ ions, which were predicted to be able to exist due to multiple-layer potential structure, are not observed. Simple calculation on production of He2+ ions inside the plasma ball reveals that reduced operating pressure and increased cathode area will help to generate He2+ ions with the layered-glow DC discharge.
