Quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs) are luminous bursts of soft X-rays from the nuclei of galaxies, repeating on timescales of hours to weeks1–5. The mechanism behind these rare systems is uncertain, but most theories involve accretion disks around supermassive black holes (SMBHs) undergoing instabilities6–8 or interacting with a stellar object in a close orbit9–11. It has been suggested that this disk could be created when the SMBH disrupts a passing star8,11, implying that many QPEs should be preceded by observable tidal disruption events (TDEs). Two known QPE sources show long-term decays in quiescent luminosity consistent with TDEs4,12 and two observed TDEs have exhibited X-ray flares consistent with individual eruptions13,14. TDEs and QPEs also occur preferentially in similar galaxies15. However, no confirmed repeating QPEs have been associated with a spectroscopically confirmed TDE or an optical TDE observed at peak brightness. Here we report the detection of nine X-ray QPEs with a mean recurrence time of approximately 48 h from AT2019qiz, a nearby and extensively studied optically selected TDE16. We detect and model the X-ray, ultraviolet (UV) and optical emission from the accretion disk and show that an orbiting body colliding with this disk provides a plausible explanation for the QPEs.The detection and modelling of nine X-ray quasi-periodic eruptions from a nearby tidal disruption event shows that these eruptions arise in accretion disks around massive black holes, left behind by tidally disrupted stars, and that an orbiting body colliding with this disk is a plausible explanation for the X-ray variability. Designing next-generation light-harvesting devices requires a detailed understanding of the transport of photoexcited charge carriers. The record-breaking efficiencies of metal halide perovskite solar cells have been linked to effective charge-carrier diffusion, yet the exact nature of charge-carrier out-of-plane transport remains notoriously difficult to explain. The characteristic spatial inhomogeneity of perovskite films with nanograins and crystallographic disorder calls for the simultaneous and hitherto elusive in situ resolution of the chemical composition, the structural phase and the ultrafast dynamics of the local out-of-plane transport. Here we simultaneously probe the intrinsic out-of-plane charge-carrier diffusion and the nanoscale morphology by pushing depth-sensitive terahertz near-field nanospectroscopy to extreme subcycle timescales. In films of the organic–inorganic metal halide perovskite FA0.83Cs0.17Pb(I1−xClx)3 (where FA is formamidinium), domains of the cubic α-phase are clearly distinguished from the trigonal δ-phase and PbI2 nano-islands. By analysing deep-subcycle time shifts of the scattered terahertz waveform after photoexcitation, we access the vertical charge-carrier dynamics within single grains. At all of the measured locations, despite topographic irregularities, diffusion is surprisingly homogeneous on the 100 nm scale, although it varies between mesoscopic regions. Linking in situ carrier transport with nanoscale morphology and chemical composition could introduce a paradigm shift for the analysis and optimization of next-generation optoelectronics that are based on nanocrystalline materials. Transient visible-pump terahertz-probe near-field microscopy enables the simultaneous retrieval of the local chemical composition, crystallographic structure, topography and out-of-plane charge-carrier diffusion in perovskite films. There is growing evidence that Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) may originate from multiple explosion channels. Previous studies have indicated that the ejecta velocity of SNe Ia is one powerful tool to discriminate between different channels. In this work, we study ∼400 confirmed SNe Ia discovered by the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey (PS1-MDS), and obtain a sample of ∼50 SNe Ia that have near-peak |$\mathrm{Si}\, {\small II}\, \lambda 6355$| velocity (⁠|$v_{\mathrm{Si}\, {\small II}}$|⁠) measurements. We investigate the relationships between |$v_{\mathrm{Si}\, {\small II}}$| and various parameters, including SN light-curve width, colour, host galaxy properties, and redshift. No significant trends are identified between |$v_{\mathrm{Si}\, {\small II}}$| and light-curve parameters. Regarding the host-galaxy properties, we see a significant trend that high-velocity (HV) SNe Ia (⁠|$v_{\mathrm{Si}\, {\small II}}\gtrsim 12000$|   km s |$^{-1}$|⁠) tend to reside in more massive galaxies compared to normal velocity (NV) SNe Ia (⁠|$v_{\mathrm{Si}\, {\small II}}\lt 12000$|   km s |$^{-1}$|⁠) when combining both the PS1-MDS data set and those from previous low- z studies. While we do not see a significant trend between |$v_{\mathrm{Si}\, {\small II}}$| and redshift, HV SNe Ia appear to be more prevalent in low- z samples than in high- z samples. We discuss several possibilities that could potentially contribute to this trend. We report the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae discovery of the tidal disruption event (TDE) ASASSN-23bd (AT 2023clx) in NGC 3799, a LINER galaxy with no evidence of strong active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity over the past decade. With a redshift of z  = 0.01107 and a peak ultraviolet (UV)/optical luminosity of (5.4 ± 0.4) × 1042 erg s−1, ASASSN-23bd is the lowest-redshift and least-luminous TDE discovered to date. Spectroscopically, ASASSN-23bd shows H α and He  i emission throughout its spectral time series, there are no coronal lines in its near-infrared spectrum, and the UV spectrum shows nitrogen lines without the strong carbon and magnesium lines typically seen for AGN. Fits to the rising ASAS-SN light curve show that ASASSN-23bd started to brighten on MJD 59988 |$^{+1}_{-1}$|⁠ , ∼9 d before discovery, with a nearly linear rise in flux, peaking in the g band on MJD |$60 \, 000^{+3}_{-3}$|⁠. Scaling relations and TDE light curve modelling find a black hole mass of ∼106 M⊙, which is on the lower end of supermassive black hole masses. ASASSN-23bd is a dim X-ray source, with an upper limit of |$L_{0.3-10\, \mathrm{keV}} \lt 1.0\times 10^{40}$| erg s−1 from stacking all Swift observations prior to MJD 60061, but with soft (∼0.1 keV) thermal emission with a luminosity of |$L_{0.3-2 \, \mathrm{keV}}\sim 4\times 10^{39}$| erg s−1 in XMM-Newton observations on MJD 60095. The rapid (t < 15 d) light curve rise, low UV/optical luminosity, and a luminosity decline over 40 d of Δ L 40 ≈ −0.7 dex make ASASSN-23bd one of the dimmest TDEs to date and a member of the growing 'Low Luminosity and Fast' class of TDEs. Bringing optical microscopy to the shortest possible length and time scales has been a long-sought goal, connecting nanoscopic elementary dynamics with the macroscopic functionalities of condensed matter. Super-resolution microscopy has circumvented the far-field diffraction limit by harnessing optical nonlinearities1. By exploiting linear interaction with tip-confined evanescent light fields2, near-field microscopy3,4 has reached even higher resolution, prompting a vibrant research field by exploring the nanocosm in motion5–19. Yet the finite radius of the nanometre-sized tip apex has prevented access to atomic resolution20. Here we leverage extreme atomic nonlinearities within tip-confined evanescent fields to push all-optical microscopy to picometric spatial and femtosecond temporal resolution. On these scales, we discover an unprecedented and efficient non-classical near-field response, in phase with the vector potential of light and strictly confined to atomic dimensions. This ultrafast signal is characterized by an optical phase delay of approximately π/2 and facilitates direct monitoring of tunnelling dynamics. We showcase the power of our optical concept by imaging nanometre-sized defects hidden to atomic force microscopy and by subcycle sampling of current transients on a semiconducting van der Waals material. Our results facilitate access to quantum light–matter interaction and electronic dynamics at ultimately short spatio-temporal scales in both conductive and insulating quantum materials.All-optical subcycle microscopy is achieved on atomic length scales, with picometric spatial and femtosecond temporal resolution. GW190425 is the second of two binary neutron star (BNS) merger events to be significantly detected by the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave (GW) Observatory (LIGO), Virgo and the Kamioka Gravitational Wave (KAGRA) detector network. With a detection only in LIGO Livingston, the skymap containing the source was large and no plausible electromagnetic counterpart was found in real-time searching in 2019. Here, we summarize Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) and Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) wide-field optical coverage of the skymap beginning within 1 and 3 h, respectively, of the GW190425 merger time. More recently, a potential coincidence between GW190425 and a fast radio burst FRB 20190425A has been suggested, given their spatial and temporal coincidences. The smaller sky localization area of FRB 20190425A and its dispersion measure led to the identification of a likely host galaxy, UGC 10667 at a distance of 141 ± 10 Mpc. Our optical imaging covered the galaxy 6.0 h after GW190425 was detected and 3.5 h after the FRB 20190425A. No optical emission was detected and further imaging at +1.2 and +13.2 d also revealed no emission. If the FRB 20190425A and GW190425 association were real, we highlight our limits on kilonova emission from a BNS merger in UGC 10667. The model for producing FRB 20190425A from a BNS merger involves a supramassive magnetized neutron star spinning down by dipole emission on the time-scale of hours. We show that magnetar-enhanced kilonova emission is ruled out by optical upper limits. The lack of detected optical emission from a kilonova in UGC 10667 disfavours, but does not disprove, the FRB–GW link for this source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Miocene (23.03–5.33 Ma) is recognized as a period with close to modern‐day paleogeography, yet a much warmer climate. With large uncertainties in future hydroclimate projections, Miocene conditions illustrate a potential future analog for the Earth system. A recent opportunistic Miocene Model Intercomparison Project 1 (MioMIP1) focused on synthesizing published Miocene climate simulations and comparing them with available temperature reconstructions. Here, we build on this effort by analyzing the hydrological cycle response to Miocene forcings across early‐to‐middle (E2MMIO; 20.03–11.6 Ma) and middle‐to‐late Miocene (M2LMIO; 11.5–5.33 Ma) simulations with CO2 concentrations ranging from 200 to 850 ppm and providing a model‐data comparison against available precipitation reconstructions. We find global precipitation increases by ∼2.1 and 2.3% per degree of warming for E2MMIO and M2LMIO simulations, respectively. Models generally agree on a wetter than modern‐day tropics; mid and high‐latitude, however, do not agree on the sign of subtropical precipitation changes with warming. Global monsoon analysis suggests most monsoon regions, except the North American Monsoon, experience higher precipitation rates under warmer conditions. Model‐data comparison shows that mean annual precipitation is underestimated by the models regardless of CO2 concentration, particularly in the mid‐ to high‐latitudes. This suggests that the models may not be (a) resolving key processes driving the hydrological cycle response to Miocene boundary conditions and/or (b) other boundary conditions or processes not considered here are critical to reproducing Miocene hydroclimate. This study highlights the challenges in modeling and reconstructing the Miocene hydrological cycle and serves as a baseline for future coordinated MioMIP efforts. During this period, the Earth's climate was 3–7°C warmer than today, with carbon dioxide (CO2) estimates ranging between 400 and 850 ppm. Understanding how the hydrological cycle responded during warmer climate conditions can give us insight into what might happen as the Earth gets warmer. We analyzed a suite of Miocene paleoclimate simulations with different CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere and compared them against fossil plant data, which gives an estimate of the average annual rainfall during the period. We found that during the Miocene global rainfall increased by about 2.1%–2.3% for each degree of warming. The models agree that the tropics, mid‐ and high‐latitude, became wetter than they are today but have lower agreement on whether subtropical areas got wetter or drier as they warmed. Compared to proxies, models consistently underestimated how much rain fell in a year, especially in the mid‐ to high‐latitude. This illustrates the challenges in reconstructing the Miocene's hydrological cycle and suggests that the models might not fully capture the range of uncertainties associated with changes in the hydrological cycle due to warming or other factors that differentiated the Miocene. Recent observations and geophysical studies at the Vredefort impact structure have indicated that the impact melt dikes in the central uplift of the structure have small depth extents. In this study, we performed magnetic and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys of the Lesutoskraal granophyre dike (LGD) and trenched to confirm its depth extent. The ERT survey showed that outcrops of the LGD are associated with shallow resistive zones with <3 m depth extent, but such zones do not occur where outcrops are absent. Visual observations in the trench confirmed that the dike has a small depth extent (~0.75 m) at this location. However, the magnetic survey revealed anomalies along the entire strike of the dike, even where no outcrops occur. We suggest that remagnetization of the host rock within a metamorphic contact aureole could explain the presence of magnetic anomalies in the absence of outcrops. Considering the results of the ERT survey, the observations made in the trench, and the surface distribution of outcrops of the LGD, we confirm that this dike has a small depth extent (<3 m) along its entire length and propose that outcrops represent the intersection of the dike terminus with the current erosional surface. Introduction: There are cases of hyperacusis (Hy) among CI patients (CI candidates and CI users) and the level of suf- fering is high. However, prevalence data are not available. Furthermore, unlike tinnitus, little is known about how this condition should be treated in CI aftercare. We have there- fore initiated case series with the primary goal of providing information on the frequency with which the diagnosis of Hy is encountered in CI patients in the clinics in Salzburg and Wels, and association between Hy, and CI aftercare, without specific treatment of Hy. Material and methods: At least 10 individual cases are planned. "Cases" of these prospective case series are all adult CI patients with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss and with the additional diagnosis of hyperacusis. Clinical measures are: (1) four frequency hearing thresholds (PTA), (2) Data Logging, (3) Freiburg Monosyllables, (4) HSM sentences in noise, (5) uncomfortable loudness levels (ULL), (6) Abbreviated Profit of Hearing Aid Benefit APHAB (subjective hearing), (7) HIQ, (8) SSSQ, (9) Visual Analog Scale (VAS), (10) Tinnitus questionnaire, (11) Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, (12) Hearing Stress Questionnaire. Results: Preliminary results in Salzburg, over a period of 9 months, Hy was observed in 10.3 percent of all CI patients who met the study criteria. All Hy cases were older than 56 years, 83 percent of them were male. Examples are the following two cases (case description not yet complete). Case 1: Man, 57 years old: The causes of progressive hearing loss include chronic otitis media and granulomatosis with pol-yangiitis (GPA). He was fitted with hearing aids 6 years ago. Before the CI, he had a severe hearing loss on the left and a slight hearing loss on the right, furthermore a strong tinnitus and Hy. Six months after the CI (left), subjective hearing and tinnitus have improved. However, social withdrawal and Hy scores have deteriorated. Case 2: Woman, 61 years old, had her first sudden hearing loss 15 years ago, 13 years ago she was fitted with hearing aids. After a stapesplasty 10 years ago, she lost her residual hearing in her right ear. On the left she suffered from a slight hearing loss. She also suffered from tinnitus (not clear which side). Two months after the CI fitting 8 years ago, Hy developed and at the same time the left ear deteriorated (moderate hearing loss) and the tinnitus (both sides) increased dramatically. Hearing training and a change in the fine-tuning of the speech processor reduced Hy. After a viral infection, Hy worsened again. At present, five years after the first CI, the second ear is within the CI indications and the impairment due to the recurring Hy has increased to the maximum. The tinnitus had also improved considerably in the meantime. However, it has now increased significantly again, especially without hearing aid and CI (50% speech recognition at quiet, CI ear (FreiburgMonosyllables, 65 dB)). The record of terrestrial impact events is incomplete with no Archean impact structures discovered, despite the expected abundance of collisions that must have occurred. Because no Archean impact structures have been identified, the necessary conditions to preserve an impact structure longer than 2 Byr are unknown. One significant effect of shock metamorphism is that the physical properties of the target rocks change, resulting in distinctive geophysical signatures of impact structures. To evaluate the preservation potential of impact structures, we evaluate the deeply eroded Proterozoic Vredefort impact structure to examine the changes in physical properties and the remnant of the geophysical signature and compare the results with the well‐preserved Chicxulub impact structure. The major structural features of Vredefort are similar to the expected profile of the Chicxulub structure at a depth of 8–10 km. The Vredefort target rocks, while shocked, do not preserve measurable changes in their physical properties. The gravity signature of the impact structure is minor and is controlled by the remnant of the collapsed transient crater rim and the uplifted Moho surface. We anticipate that erosion of the Vredefort structure by an additional 1 km would remove evidence of impact, and regardless of initial size, erosion by >10 km would result in the removal of most of the evidence for any impact structure from the geological record. This study demonstrates that the identification of geologically old (i.e., Archean) impact structures is limited by a lack of geophysical signatures associated with deeply eroded craters. Plain Language Summary: Meteorite collisions should have formed throughout the 4.5 billion‐year‐long history of Earth, but we have only found impact craters that are less than half of the age of the Earth (2 billion years) and younger. In order to understand how to find very old impact craters, we studied the largest of the oldest preserved impact craters. The 2 Byr old Vredefort structure in South Africa has been deeply eroded, and thus provides a good view of its deep roots. We collected a series of samples of the exposed rocks known to have evidence of shock effects and measured their physical properties. We found that the physical properties do not show evidence of the meteorite impact event. We also established that the gravity profile of the crater preserves a weak signal. When the Vredefort structure erodes a bit more, the geophysical characteristics that make it identifiable will be gone. We expect that signatures of ancient impact structures even larger than Vredefort would be completely removed by erosion by now. Therefore, to find very old impact craters, we need to look in areas that have experienced unusually little erosion. We present optical and near-infrared (NIR) observations of the Type Icn supernova (SN Icn) 2022ann, the fifth member of its newly identified class of SNe. Its early optical spectra are dominated by narrow carbon and oxygen P-Cygni features with absorption velocities of ∼800 km s−1; slower than other SNe Icn and indicative of interaction with a dense, H/He-poor circumstellar medium (CSM) that is outflowing slower than typical Wolf–Rayet wind velocities of >1000 km s−1. We identify helium in NIR spectra 2 weeks after maximum and in optical spectra at 3 weeks, demonstrating that the CSM is not fully devoid of helium. Unlike other SNe Icn, the spectra of SN 2022ann never develop broad features from SN ejecta, including in the nebular phase. Compared to other SNe Icn, SN 2022ann has a low luminosity (o -band absolute magnitude of ∼−17.7), and evolves slowly. The bolometric light curve is well-modelled by 4.8 M⊙ of SN ejecta interacting with 1.3 M⊙ of CSM. We place an upper limit of 0.04 M⊙ of 56Ni synthesized in the explosion. The host galaxy is a dwarf galaxy with a stellar mass of 107.34 M⊙ (implied metallicity of log(Z/Z⊙) ≈ 0.10) and integrated star-formation rate of log (SFR) = −2.20 M⊙ yr−1; both lower than 97 per cent of galaxies observed to produce core-collapse supernovae, although consistent with star-forming galaxies on the galaxy Main Sequence. The low CSM velocity, nickel and ejecta masses, and likely low-metallicity environment disfavour a single Wolf–Rayet progenitor star. Instead, a binary companion is likely required to adequately strip the progenitor and produce a low-velocity outflow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NGC 5273 is a known optical and X-ray variable AGN. We analyse new and archival IR, optical, UV, and X-ray data in order to characterize its long-term variability from 2000–2022. At least one optical changing-look event occurred between 2011 and 2014 when the AGN changed from a Type 1.8/1.9 Seyfert to a Type 1. It then faded considerably at all wavelengths, followed by a dramatic but slow increase in UV/optical brightness between 2021 and 2022. Near-IR (NIR) spectra in 2022 show prominent broad Paschen lines that are absent in an archival spectrum from 2010, making NGC 5273 one of the few AGNs to be observed changing-look in the NIR. We propose that NGC 5273 underwent multiple changing-look events between 2000 and 2022 – starting as a Type 1.8/1.9, NGC 5273 changes-look to a Type 1 temporarily in 2002 and again in 2014, reverting back to a Type 1.8/1.9 by 2005 and 2017, respectively. In 2022, it is again a Type 1 Seyfert. We characterize the changing-look events and their connection to the dynamic accretion and radiative processes in NGC 5273 and propose that the variable luminosity (and thus, Eddington ratio) of the source is changing how the broad-line region (BLR) reprocesses the continuum emission. This paper assesses the poverty implications of heat stress‐related labor capacity losses based on simulations using a global general equilibrium economic model. Compared with past studies, we use a more precise measurement of heat stress, assign labor capacity losses to specific labor types by sector, and employ an economic model that contains highly disaggregated economic sectors and regions. This model allows us to determine global and regional economic impacts that account for international dependencies. We focus attention on seven West African countries for which we determine the implied changes in real incomes of households near the poverty line. For these countries, we use household microsimulations to determine potential impacts on the poverty headcount. In our results, poverty impacts are heterogeneous across countries and earning sources‐based household strata. A key channel behind this heterogeneity is how loss of labor productivity affects the relative returns to factors of production. We find that unskilled agricultural wages could increase, as loss of productivity in the face of inelastic food demand induces increased labor demand in order to dampen agricultural output losses. In our experiments, even neglecting potential increases in mortality and morbidity, poverty increases range from 2.3% in Cameroon to up to 7.2%–9.2% in Ghana and Nigeria. In one of the seven countries considered, Guinea, poverty sees little change due to the mitigating effects of rising labor wages. This will cause economic losses, especially in sectors with high exposure in hot, humid regions. The uneven distributional implications of this, especially on lower‐middle income countries, are of special interest. Here, we assess the poverty implications of heat stress on labor globally but with an emphasis on seven West African countries. To estimate poverty impacts in West Africa, we construct global projections of future heat stress and associated labor capacity losses. Surveys of workers provide work intensity and outdoor exposure rates, allowing us to determine which type of workers in which sectors would be affected most. Using a global economic model, we assess the resulting impacts on production, GDP, prices, wages, and incomes. In turn, income changes determine poverty changes. Using recent survey data from seven West African countries, we determine how many households are pushed into poverty under a +3°C global warming scenario. Neglecting potential increases in mortality and morbidity rates, poverty increases in six countries by between 2.3% and 9.2%, while in one country, Guinea, there is little change. In Guinea, agricultural workers can see their wages increase due to increased demand aimed at mitigating food production losses. Introduction: Mental Health problems and substance misuse during pregnancy constitute a serious social problem due to high maternal-fetal morbidity (Cook et al, 2017; JOCG, 39(10) ,906-915) and low detection and treatment rates (Carmona et al. Adicciones. 2022;34(4):299-308) Objectives: Our study aimed to develop and test the feasibility and acceptability of a screening and treatment clinical pathway in pregnancy, based on the combination of e-Health tools with in-person interventions and, secondly, describe the prevalence of mental illness and substance use problems in this population. Methods: 1382 pregnant women undergoing her first pregnancy visit were included in a tailored clinical pathway and sent a telematic (App) autoapplied questionnaire with an extensive battery of measures (WHO (Five) Well-Being [WHO-5],Patient Health Questionnaire [PHQ-9], General Anxiety Disorder [GAD-7], Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test [AUDIT], Drug Abuse Screening Test [DAST], Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale [C-SSRS] and specifically designed questions on self-harm and psychopharmacological drugs). Patients who did not respond to the questionnaire on their own received a counseling call. Based on the screening results, patients were classified into five groups according to severity (Figure 1) and assigned a specific action pathway (Figure 2) that included a range of intervention intensity that goes from an individual psychiatric appointment to no intervention. Results: Of the 1382 women included in the clinical pathway, 565(41%) completed the evaluation questionnaires. Of these, 205 (36%) were screened as positive (Grades III,IV or V. Table 1) and 3(0.5%) were classified as needing urgent care. Of the patients offered on-line groups (100), 40% (40) were enrolled in them. Extreme weather events are major causes of loss of life and damage infrastructure worldwide. High temperatures cause heat stress on humans, livestock, crops and infrastructure. Heat stress exposure is projected to increase with ongoing climate change. Extremes of temperature are common in Africa and infrastructure is often incapable of providing adequate cooling. We show how easily accessible cooling technology, such as evaporative coolers, prevent heat stress in historic timescales but are unsuitable as a solution under climate change. As temperatures increase, powered cooling, such as air conditioning, is necessary to prevent overheating. This will, in turn, increase demand on already stretched infrastructure. We use high temporal resolution climate model data to estimate the demand for cooling according to two metrics, firstly the apparent temperature and secondly the discomfort index. For each grid cell we calculate the heat stress value and the amount of cooling required to turn a heat stress event into a non heat stress event. We show the increase in demand for cooling in Africa is non uniform and that equatorial countries are exposed to higher heat stress than higher latitude countries. We further show that evaporative coolers are less effective in tropical regions than in the extra tropics. Finally, we show that neither low nor high efficiency coolers are sufficient to return Africa to current levels of heat stress under climate change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vortices are the hallmarks of hydrodynamic flow. Strongly interacting electrons in ultrapure conductors can display signatures of hydrodynamic behaviour, including negative non-local resistance1–4, higher-than-ballistic conduction5–7, Poiseuille flow in narrow channels8–10 and violation of the Wiedemann–Franz law11. Here we provide a visualization of whirlpools in an electron fluid. By using a nanoscale scanning superconducting quantum interference device on a tip12, we image the current distribution in a circular chamber connected through a small aperture to a current-carrying strip in the high-purity type II Weyl semimetal WTe2. In this geometry, the Gurzhi momentum diffusion length and the size of the aperture determine the vortex stability phase diagram. We find that vortices are present for only small apertures, whereas the flow is laminar (non-vortical) for larger apertures. Near the vortical-to-laminar transition, we observe the single vortex in the chamber splitting into two vortices; this behaviour is expected only in the hydrodynamic regime and is not anticipated for ballistic transport. These findings suggest a new mechanism of hydrodynamic flow in thin pure crystals such that the spatial diffusion of electron momenta is enabled by small-angle scattering at the surfaces instead of the routinely invoked electron–electron scattering, which becomes extremely weak at low temperatures. Summary: Although patient safety related to airway management has improved substantially over the last few decades, life‐threatening events still occur. Technical skills, clinical expertise and human factors contribute to successful airway management. Checklists aim to improve safety by providing a structured approach to equipment, personnel and decision‐making. This audit investigates adherence to our institution's airway checklist from 1 June 2016 to 31 May 2021. Inclusion criteria were procedures requiring airway management and we excluded all procedures performed solely under regional anaesthesia, sedation without airway management or paediatric and cardiovascular surgery. The primary outcome was the proportion of wholly performed pre‐induction checklists. Secondary outcomes were the pattern of adherence over the 5 years well as details of airway management, including: airway management difficulties; time and location of induction; anaesthesia teams in operating theatres (including teams for different surgical specialities); non‐operating theatre and emergency procedures; type of anaesthesia (general or combined); and urgency of the procedure. In total, 95,946 procedures were included. In 57.3%, anaesthesia pre‐induction checklists were completed. Over the 5 years after implementation, adherence improved from 48.3% to 66.7% (p < 0.001). Anticipated and unanticipated airway management difficulties (e.g. facemask ventilation, supraglottic airway device or intubation) defined by the handling anaesthetist were encountered in 4.2% of all procedures. Completion of the checklist differed depending on the time of day (61.3% during the day vs. 35.0% during the night, p < 0.001). Completion also differed depending on location (66.8% in operating theatres vs. 41.0% for non‐operating theatre anaesthesia, p < 0.001) and urgency of procedure (65.4% in non‐emergencies vs. 35.4% in emergencies, p < 0.001). A mixed‐effect model indicated that urgency of procedure is a strong predictor for adherence, with emergency cases having lower adherence (OR 0.58, 95%CI 0.49–0.68, p < 0.001). In conclusion, over 5 years, a significant increase in adherence to an anaesthesia pre‐induction checklist was found, and areas for further improvement (e.g. emergencies, non‐operating room procedures, night‐time procedures) were identified. We provide a quantum information description of a proposed five-blade neutron interferometer geometry and show that it is robust against low-frequency mechanical vibrations and dephasing due to the dynamical phase. The extent to which the dynamical phase affects the contrast in a neutron interferometer is experimentally shown. In our model, we consider the coherent evolution of a neutron wavepacket in an interferometer crystal blade and simulate the effect of mechanical vibrations and momentum spread of the neutron through the interferometer. The standard three-blade neutron interferometer is shown to be immune to dynamical phase noise but prone to noise from mechanical vibrations, and the decoherence free subspace four-blade neutron interferometer is shown to be immune to mechanical vibration noise but prone to noise from the dynamical phase. We present multiwavelength follow-up observations of the ATLAS discovered faint Iax supernova SN 2020kyg that peaked at an absolute magnitude of Mg ≈ −14.9 ± 0.2, making it another member of the faint Iax supernova population. The bolometric light curve requires only ≈7 × 10−3 M⊙ of radioactive 56Ni, with an ejected mass of M ej ∼ 0.4 M⊙ and a low kinetic energy of E ≈ 0.05 ± 0.02 × 1051 erg. We construct a homogeneous volume-limited sample of 902 transients observed by ATLAS within 100 Mpc during a 3.5 yr span. Using this sample, we constrain the rates of faint Iax (Mr ≳ −16) events within 60 Mpc at |$12^{+14}_{-8}{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the SN Ia rate. The overall Iax rate, at |$15^{+17}_{-9}{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the Ia rate, is dominated by the low-luminosity events, with luminous SNe Iax (Mr ≲ −17.5) like 2002cx and 2005hk, accounting for only |$0.9^{+1.1}_{-0.5}{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the Ia rate (a 2σ upper limit of approximately 3 per cent). We favour the hybrid CONe WD + He star progenitor channel involving a failed deflagration of a near Chandrasekhar mass white dwarf, expected to leave a bound remnant and a surviving secondary companion, as a candidate explanation for faint Iax explosions. This scenario requires short delay times, consistent with the observed environments of SNe Iax. Furthermore, binary population synthesis calculations have suggested rates of |$1\!-\!18{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the SN Ia rate for this channel, consistent with our rate estimates. Objective: Failure rate in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) is > 50%, includes safety-problems, underpowered statistics, lack of efficacy, lack of funding or insufficient patient recruitment and is even more pronounced in oncology trials. We present results of a structured concept-development phase (CDP) for a phase III RCT on personalized radiotherapy (RT) in primary prostate cancer (PCa) patients implementing prostate specific membrane antigen targeting positron emission tomography (PSMA-PET).Materials and Methods: The 1 yr process of the CDP contained five main working packages: (i) literature search and scoping review, (ii) involvement of individual patients, patients' representatives and patients' self-help groups addressing the patients' willingness to participate in the preparation process and the conduct of RCTs as well as the patient informed consent (PIC), (iii) involvement of national and international experts and expert panels (iv) a phase II pilot study investigating the safety of implementation of PSMA-PET for focal dose escalation RT and (v) in-silico RT planning studies assessing feasibility of envisaged dose regimens and effects of urethral sparing in focal dose escalation.Results: (i) Systematic literature searches confirmed the high clinical relevance for more evidence on advanced RT approaches, in particular stereotactic body RT, in high-risk PCa patients. (ii) Involvement of patients, patient representatives and randomly selected males relevantly changed the PIC and initiated a patient empowerment project for training of bladder preparation. (iii) Discussion with national and international experts led to adaptions of inclusion and exclusion criteria. (iv) Fifty patients were treated in the pilot trial and in- and exclusion criteria as well as enrollment calculations were adapted accordingly. Parallel conduction of the pilot trial revealed pitfalls on practicability and broadened the horizon for translational projects. (v) In-silico planning studies confirmed feasibility of envisaged dose prescription. Despite large prostate- and boost-volumes of up to 66% of the prostate, adherence to stringent anorectal dose constraints was feasible. Urethral sparing increased the therapeutic ratio.Conclusion: The dynamic framework of interdisciplinary working programs in CDPs enhances robustness of RCT protocols and may be associated with decreased failure rates. The International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam has adopted new formulations for the thermodynamic and transport properties of heavy water. This manuscript describes the development of a formulation for the thermal conductivity of heavy water that was adopted as an international standard in 2021. It is consistent with the equation of state adopted in 2017, revised slightly in 2018, and is valid for fluid states up to 825 K and 250 MPa with uncertainties ranging from 1.5% to 6% depending on the state point. Comparisons with experimental data and with an earlier thermal-conductivity formulation are presented. The 2021 formulation accounts for the critical enhancement of the thermal conductivity, which was not incorporated in the previous formulation. Furthermore, in the zero-density limit, the 2021 formulation is based on thermal conductivity values at temperatures from 250 to 2500 K obtained from the kinetic theory of polyatomic gases. Using data from a year-long dedicated campaign to observe bright stars, we study the crosstalk channels present in the GPC1 camera. By analyzing these data, we construct a data set that checks source stars on almost every CCD of every chip within the camera against all possible crosstalk destinations. We use a clustering algorithm to find potential crosstalk occurrences, and then also check all possible combinations (driven by the hardware layout) by eye. This results in a total of 640 rules, with a flux attenuation factor ranging from 2.5 Ă— 102 for the bright end to 2.5 Ă— 104 at the faint end. The average value of m crossâ€" m src ≈ âˆ'10.25 corresponds to an attenuating factor of 1.25 Ă— 104, which produces crosstalk ghosts with an average signal-to-noise ratio of 0.64 ± 0.1 on the bright images. We find no evidence of crosstalk signals between CCDs not connected in the hardware setup. The distribution of attenuation factors is also found to be dependent on crosstalk movement. A clear dependence on cell column offsets is found, consistent with the idea that the source star charge is progressively attenuated during the traversal of cell readout lines. Tunnelling is one of the most fundamental manifestations of quantum mechanics. The recent advent of lightwave-driven scanning tunnelling microscopy has revolutionized ultrafast nanoscience by directly resolving electron tunnelling in electrically conducting samples on the relevant ultrashort length- and timescales. Here, we introduce a complementary approach based on terahertz near-field microscopy to perform ultrafast nano-videography of tunnelling processes even in insulators. The central idea is to probe the evolution of the local polarizability of electron–hole pairs with evanescent terahertz fields, which we detect with subcycle temporal resolution. In a proof of concept, we resolve femtosecond interlayer transport in van der Waals heterobilayers and reveal pronounced variations of the local formation and annihilation of interlayer excitons on deeply subwavelength, nanometre scales. Such contact-free nanoscopy of tunnelling-induced dynamics should be universally applicable to conducting and non-conducting samples and reveal how ultrafast transport processes shape functionalities in a wide range of condensed matter systems. Subcycle nano-videography of charge-transfer dynamics in WSe2/WS2 heterostructures is obtained by using a terahertz near-field microscopy. We present new photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2019yvq, a Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) exhibiting several peculiar properties including an excess of UV/optical flux within days of explosion, a high Si ii velocity, and a low peak luminosity. Photometry near the time of first light places new constraints on the rapid rise of the UV/optical flux excess. A near-infrared spectrum at +173 days after maximum light places strict limits on the presence of H or He emission, effectively excluding the presence of a nearby nondegenerate star at the time of explosion. New optical spectra, acquired at +128 and +150 days after maximum light, confirm the presence of [Ca ii ] λ7300 and persistent Ca ii NIR triplet emission as SN 2019yvq transitions into the nebular phase. The lack of [O i ] emission disfavors the violent merger of two C/O white dwarfs (WDs) but the merger of a C/O WD with a He WD cannot be excluded. We compare our findings with several models in the literature postulated to explain the early flux excess including double-detonation explosions, 56Ni mixing into the outer ejecta during ignition, and interaction with H- and He-deficient circumstellar material. Each model may be able to explain both the early flux excess and the nebular [Ca ii ] emission, but none of the models can reconcile the high photospheric velocities with the low peak luminosity without introducing new discrepancies. The Miocene epoch, spanning 23.03–5.33 Ma, was a dynamic climate of sustained, polar amplified warmth. Miocene atmospheric CO2 concentrations are typically reconstructed between 300 and 600 ppm and were potentially higher during the Miocene Climatic Optimum (16.75–14.5 Ma). With surface temperature reconstructions pointing to substantial midlatitude and polar warmth, it is unclear what processes maintained the much weaker‐than‐modern equator‐to‐pole temperature difference. Here, we synthesize several Miocene climate modeling efforts together with available terrestrial and ocean surface temperature reconstructions. We evaluate the range of model‐data agreement, highlight robust mechanisms operating across Miocene modeling efforts and regions where differences across experiments result in a large spread in warming responses. Prescribed CO2 is the primary factor controlling global warming across the ensemble. On average, elements other than CO2, such as Miocene paleogeography and ice sheets, raise global mean temperature by ∼2°C, with the spread in warming under a given CO2 concentration (due to a combination of the spread in imposed boundary conditions and climate feedback strengths) equivalent to ∼1.2 times a CO2 doubling. This study uses an ensemble of opportunity: models, boundary conditions, and reference data sets represent the state‐of‐art for the Miocene, but are inhomogeneous and not ideal for a formal intermodel comparison effort. Acknowledging this caveat, this study is nevertheless the first Miocene multi‐model, multi‐proxy comparison attempted so far. This study serves to take stock of the current progress toward simulating Miocene warmth while isolating remaining challenges that may be well served by community‐led efforts to coordinate modeling and data activities within a common analytical framework. In this study, we evaluate the surface warming patterns simulated by a range of different climate models configured with Miocene paleogeography and CO2 concentrations spanning 200–850 ppm. We also synthesize available Miocene surface temperature reconstructions. The primary factor controlling the amount of global warming seen across the Miocene simulations analyzed is the CO2 concentration that was prescribed within a given simulation. On average, Miocene elements other than CO2, such as Miocene paleogeography and ice sheets, raise global mean temperature by ∼2°C. While some Miocene simulations with high CO2 forcing overlap with the reconstructed global mean surface temperature estimates for their target Miocene interval, they still generally fail to capture the reconstructed pattern of warming. The Miocene epoch (23.03–5.33 Ma) was a time interval of global warmth, relative to today. Continental configurations and mountain topography transitioned toward modern conditions, and many flora and fauna evolved into the same taxa that exist today. Miocene climate was dynamic: long periods of early and late glaciation bracketed a ∼2 Myr greenhouse interval—the Miocene Climatic Optimum (MCO). Floras, faunas, ice sheets, precipitation, pCO2, and ocean and atmospheric circulation mostly (but not ubiquitously) covaried with these large changes in climate. With higher temperatures and moderately higher pCO2 (∼400–600 ppm), the MCO has been suggested as a particularly appropriate analog for future climate scenarios, and for assessing the predictive accuracy of numerical climate models—the same models that are used to simulate future climate. Yet, Miocene conditions have proved difficult to reconcile with models. This implies either missing positive feedbacks in the models, a lack of knowledge of past climate forcings, or the need for re‐interpretation of proxies, which might mitigate the model‐data discrepancy. Our understanding of Miocene climatic, biogeochemical, and oceanic changes on broad spatial and temporal scales is still developing. New records documenting the physical, chemical, and biotic aspects of the Earth system are emerging, and together provide a more comprehensive understanding of this important time interval. Here, we review the state‐of‐the‐art in Miocene climate, ocean circulation, biogeochemical cycling, ice sheet dynamics, and biotic adaptation research as inferred through proxy observations and modeling studies. Continental‐sized ice sheets were only present on Antarctica, but not in the northern hemisphere. The continents drifted to near their modern‐day positions, and plants and animals evolved into the many (near) modern species. Scientists study the Miocene because present‐day and projected future CO2 levels are in the same range as those reconstructed for the Miocene. Therefore, if we can understand climate changes and their biotic responses from the Miocene past, we are able to better predict current and future global changes. By comparing Miocene climate reconstructions from fossil and chemical data to climate simulations produced by computer models, scientists are able to test their understanding of the Earth system under higher CO2 and warmer conditions than those of today. This helps in constraining future warming scenarios for the coming decades. In this study, we summarize the current understanding of the Miocene world from data and models. We also identify gaps in our understanding that need further research attention in the future. Summary: A 7‐year‐old Holsteiner gelding was presented with a left common digital extensor sheath effusion of one‐year's duration. Radiographic examination revealed two extra‐articular mineralised bodies adjacent to the dorsolateral carpometacarpal joint. Ultrasonography confirmed an intrathecal location of one mineralised body in the common digital extensor sheath, palmar fraying of the common digital extensor tendon and tenosynovitis. Ultrasound could not confirm whether the second mineralised body was intrathecal or located external to the common digital extensor sheath. Common digital extensor tenoscopy facilitated removal of both mineralised bodies and revealed a fistula communicating with the carpometacarpal joint. The mineralised bodies, initially thought to be synovial osteochondromas, were histologically identified as para‐articular osteochondromas. There are no previously published reports of para‐articular chondroma/osteochondroma in the horse. Despite surgical removal of the para‐articular osteochondromas, concern for future extensor sheath distension remained given the communication between the carpometacarpal joint and common digital extensor sheath. However, several observational domains, including SNe within days or hours of explosion and faint, red transients, are just beginning to be explored. Here we present the Young Supernova Experiment (YSE), a novel optical time-domain survey on the Pan-STARRS telescopes. Our survey is designed to obtain well-sampled griz light curves for thousands of transient events up to z ≈ 0.2. This large sample of transients with four-band light curves will lay the foundation for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, providing a critical training set in similar filters and a well-calibrated low-redshift anchor of cosmologically useful SNe Ia to benefit dark energy science. As the name suggests, YSE complements and extends other ongoing time-domain surveys by discovering fast-rising SNe within a few hours to days of explosion. YSE is the only current four-band time-domain survey and is able to discover transients as faint as ∼21.5 mag in gri and ∼20.5 mag in z, depths that allow us to probe the earliest epochs of stellar explosions. YSE is currently observing approximately 750 deg2 of sky every 3 days, and we plan to increase the area to 1500 deg2 in the near future. When operating at full capacity, survey simulations show that YSE will find ∼5000 new SNe per year and at least two SNe within 3 days of explosion per month. To date, YSE has discovered or observed 8.3% of the transient candidates reported to the International Astronomical Union in 2020. We present observations of ASASSN-19dj, a nearby tidal disruption event (TDE) discovered in the post-starburst galaxy KUG 0810+227 by the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae (ASAS-SN) at a distance of d ≃ 98 Mpc. We observed ASASSN-19dj from −21 to 392 d relative to peak ultraviolet (UV)/optical emission using high-cadence, multiwavelength spectroscopy and photometry. From the ASAS-SN g -band data, we determine that the TDE began to brighten on 2019 February 6.8 and for the first 16 d the rise was consistent with a flux ∝ t 2 power law. ASASSN-19dj peaked in the UV/optical on 2019 March 6.5 (MJD = 58548.5) at a bolometric luminosity of L = (6.2 ± 0.2) × 1044 erg s−1. Initially remaining roughly constant in X-rays and slowly fading in the UV/optical, the X-ray flux increased by over an order of magnitude ∼225 d after peak, resulting from the expansion of the X-ray emitting region. The late-time X-ray emission is well fitted by a blackbody with an effective radius of ∼1 × 1012 cm and a temperature of ∼6 × 105 K. The X-ray hardness ratio becomes softer after brightening and then returns to a harder state as the X-rays fade. Analysis of Catalina Real-Time Transient Survey images reveals a nuclear outburst roughly 14.5 yr earlier with a smooth decline and a luminosity of LV ≥ 1.4 × 1043 erg s−1, although the nature of the flare is unknown. ASASSN-19dj occurred in the most extreme post-starburst galaxy yet to host a TDE, with Lick Hδ A = 7.67 ± 0.17 Å. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this letter, we present the performance of a 100 μm × 400 μm × 40 nm W Transition-Edge Sensor with a critical temperature of 40 mK. This device has a noise equivalent power of 1.5 × 1 0 - 18 W / H z , in a bandwidth of 2.6 kHz, indicating a resolution for Dirac delta energy depositions of 40 ± 5 meV (rms). The performance demonstrated by this device is a critical step toward developing a O (100) m e V threshold athermal phonon detector for low-mass dark matter searches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: To analyze intraoperative OCT (iOCT) findings during subretinal gene therapy. Methods: A single-center, retrospective, observational, case series study of twenty one eyes submitted to subretinal gene therapy. Intrasurgical high definition videos were included for analyzes. Cases with absence of iOCT video or unsuccessful bleb creation were excluded. Sharp needle tip (SNT) or blunted needle tip (BNT) and their interaction with neurosensory retina were evaluated. Presence of subretinal air bubbles, visible opened retinotomy, and medication reflux were also correlated and analyzed. Results: Nineteen of twenty-one eyes were included. Of the two excluded eyes, subretinal bleb creation was unsuccessful in one and technical issues prevented OCT image acquisition in the other. Immediately before subretinal injection, needle indention/penetration of the neurosensory retina with temporary indentation of the RPE/choroid was evident in 16 (84%) of the 19 eyes. Complete RPE/choroid indentation was needed with BNT use compared to SNT (p = 0.0114). An open retinotomy was identified in 14 (74%) of 19 eyes at the conclusion of bleb injection and was more commonly associated with SNT (p = 0.0108). Conclusions: iOCT provides valuable real-time feedback of cross-sectional retinal anatomy during subretinal gene therapy surgeries. The type of needle tip and its use during the gene therapy procedure seems to influence in the bleb creation and presence of visible open retinotomy. Further studies of iOCT findings during gene therapy delivery procedures are likely to help refine the surgical technique. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Increasingly advanced and affordable close-range sensing techniques are employed by an ever-broadening range of users, with varying competence and experience. In this context a method was tested that uses photogrammetry and classification by machine learning to divide a point cloud into different surface type classes. The study site is a peat scarp 20 metres long in the actively eroding river bank of the Rotmoos valley near Obergurgl, Austria. Imagery from near-infra red (NIR) and conventional (RGB) sensors, georeferenced with coordinates of targets surveyed with a total station, was used to create a point cloud using structure from motion and dense image matching. NIR and RGB information were merged into a single point cloud and 18 geometric features were extracted using three different radii (0.02 m, 0.05 m and 0.1 m) totalling 58 variables on which to apply the machine learning classification. Segments representing six classes, dry grass, green grass, peat, rock, snow and target, were extracted from the point cloud and split into a training set and a testing set. A Random Forest machine learning model was trained using machine learning packages in the R-CRAN environment. The overall classification accuracy and Kappa Index were 98% and 97% respectively. Rock, snow and target classes had the highest producer and user accuracies. Dry and green grass had the highest omission (1.9% and 5.6% respectively) and commission errors (3.3% and 3.4% respectively). Analysis of feature importance revealed that the spectral descriptors (NIR, R, G, B) were by far the most important determinants followed by verticality at 0.1 m radius. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Indo‐Asian Monsoon (IAM) has changed as the topographies of Asia were assembled into their current configuration. Understanding complex interactions between topography and the IAM through time has been hampered, in part, by poorly resolved topography and atmospheric dynamics in climate models. Here, we employ high‐resolution (0.23° × 0.31°) global climate simulations, to more accurately capture these interactions. We find that the Himalayas and Tibet primarily redirect the onshore moisture transport and produce local orographic precipitation. The Iranian Plateau is the primary gatekeeper, insulating the pool of high‐enthalpy air in the Indo‐Gangetic Plain (IGP) from westerly low‐enthalpy advection. But, even when such high‐enthalpy air exists along the IGP, vigorous precipitation in the region (poleward of 25°N) still requires orographic steering and lifting. The large‐scale circulations—largely governed by sea surface temperature gradients—robustly advect water vapor onshore regardless of topography. Thus, neither topography nor localized enthalpy air drives onshore monsoon flow. Plain Language Summary: The Indo‐Asian Monsoon (IAM) circulation is an exemplar for how tectonic processes interact with regional climate systems. However, topography‐atmosphere interaction is complex, challenging to model, and understanding the IAM at a specific period in Earth's history involves the consideration of multiple topographically induced circulations. To better capture such processes, we simulate the global climate using high‐resolution (~25 km) simulations with alternative Asian topographic boundary conditions. Here, we determine the individual importance of the Himalayas, Tibetan, and Iranian Plateaus. Instead of the previously proposed heating or insulating mechanisms, we find that the primary role of topography is to redirect and lift the onshore monsoon air to produce orographic precipitation. We show that onshore flows exist regardless of topography and are governed by sea surface temperature gradients. Thus, neither topography nor localized enthalpy air drives onshore monsoon flow. Our findings have implications for tropical monsoon theories and the paleoclimatology of Asia. Amyloid oligomers are suspected as toxic agents in neurodegenerative disease, and are transient and often heterogeneous, making them difficult to detect. Here we show an approach to track the development of amyloid oligomers in situ by room temperature, continuous wave (cw) 9 and 95 GHz EPR. Three amyloid peptides with the 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-N-oxyl-4-amino-4-carboxylic acid (TOAC) spin label were synthesized by solid phase peptide synthesis: T0EZ (TKVKVLGDVIEVGG) with TOAC (T) at the N-terminus, T5EZ with TOAC in the middle (KVKVTGDVIEVG) and T12EZ with TOAC at the C-terminus (KVKVLGDVIEVTG). These sequences are derived from the K11V (KVKVLGDVIEV) amyloid peptide, which self-aggregates to oligomers with a β-sheet configuration (A. Laganowsky, et al., Science, 2012, 335, 1228–1231). To monitor oligomerization, the rotational correlation time (τr) is measured by cw-EPR. For the backbone-fixed TOAC label that is devoid of local mobility τr should reflect the rotation and thereby the size of the peptide, resp. oligomer. For T5EZ a good match between the measured τr and the size of the peptide is obtained, showing the validity of the approach. One of the three peptides (T0EZ) aggregates (circular dichroism), whereas the other two do not. Since also the respective MTSL (S-(1-oxyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-2,5-dihydro-1H-pyrrol-3-yl)methyl methanesulfonothioate) labelled peptides fail to aggregate, molecular crowding due to the label, rather than the helix-inducing properties of TOAC, seems to be responsible. Following in situ oligomer formation of T0EZ by the change in rotational correlation time, two oligomers are observed, a 5–6 mer and a 15–18 mer. The EPR approach, particularly 95 GHz EPR, enables following oligomerization of one monomer at a time, suggesting that the cw-EPR approach presented is a novel tool to follow amyloid oligomerization with high resolution. Background: Ring 14 syndrome is a rare chromosomal disorder characterized by a ring-shaped appearance of chromosome 14. Classically findings include distinct facial characteristics, refractory epilepsy, global development delay, muscular hypotonia and ocular abnormalities. Here we report a retinal multimodal imaging analyses of a ring chromosome 14 syndrome patient with associated macular pigmentary changes. Materials and Methods: Case report of an 11-year-old female with a history of refractory epilepsy since 3 months of age was diagnosed with ring 14 syndrome after karyotype at 8 months old. She presented with muscle weakness, mild intellectual delay, associated hyperopia and punctiform yellowish lesions. Multimodal imaging including fundus photography, red-free fundus photography, fundus auto-fluorescence and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography were used to assess this patient. Results: An 11-year-old female with ring 14 syndrome caused by the fusion of terminal breakpoints in both the short arm and long arm of chromosome 14 at p11.1 and q32.3, respectively. At eye exam, the best corrected visual acuity was 20/20 at both eyes with associated hyperopia. Macula showing scattered punctiform yellowish lesions, bright on red-free fundus photography and hyperautofluorescence dots in the same area. The SD-OCT showed normal characteristics at both eyes with the exception of localized irregularity of the RPE in an area associated with a macular yellow dots. Conclusions: Ring 14 syndrome can cause hyperopia and associated macular yellow dots visible at multimodal imaging analyses. This paper presents a new wide-ranging correlation for the viscosity of cyclopentane based on critically evaluated experimental data. The correlation is designed to be used with a recently developed equation of state, and it is valid from the triple point to 360 K in the liquid range up to 380 MPa and 460 K in the low-pressure vapor range. The average absolute percent deviation of the fit for all primary data is 0.8% with a bias of −0.3%. The estimated expanded uncertainty of the whole fit is 2.7% (at the 95% confidence level), while the uncertainty near atmospheric pressure from 298 K to 460 K increases to 4%. The correlation behaves in a physically reasonable manner when extrapolated to 500 MPa; however, care should be taken when using the correlations outside of the validated range. High-strain rate deformation can cause in situ melting of rocks, resulting in the formation of dark, micro- to nanocrystalline pseudotachylite veins. On Earth, pseudotachylite veins form during meteorite impacts, large landslides, and earthquakes. Within the Vredefort impact structure, both impact-generated and (pre-impact) tectonically-generated pseudotachylite veins have been described, but are challenging to distinguish. Here, we demonstrate a genetic distinction between two pseudotachylite veins from Vredefort by studying their petrography, degree of recrystallization and deformation, cross-cutting relationships and the deformation microstructures in associated zircon. We conclude that Vein 1 is pre-impact and tectonically-generated, and Vein 2 is impact-generated. In agreement, zircon microstructures in Vein 1 contain planar deformation bands (PDBs), attributed to tectonic deformation, whereas zircon microstructures in Vein 2 reveal microtwin lamellae, indisputable evidence of shock metamorphism. Thus, deformation microstructures in zircon may provide a new criterion for distinguishing the genetic origin of pseudotachylite veins. Zircons that have been removed from their context (i.e. alluvial or detrital zircon, zircon from Lunar breccia) should be interpreted with caution in terms of their deformation history. For example, zircon with PDBs cannot reliably be used as a marker for shock deformation, because this feature has been shown to form in purely tectonic settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An energy resolution of ΔE=12 eV [full width at half maximum (FWHM)] has been measured for the [sup 55]Mn K[sub α1] line (E=5.9 keV) using a superconducting lead absorber (90x90x1.3 μm[sup 3]) readout by a single aluminum superconducting tunnel junction (100x100 μm[sup 2]). The total detector area has been illuminated, while a slit mask of 150 μm width was used to partially shadow the detector leads and substrate area from impinging x rays. The total electronic noise contribution was measured as ΔE[sub elec]=4 eV (FWHM). The superconducting tunnel junction is located on a Si[sub 3]N[sub 4] membrane of thickness 0.3 μm, the lead absorber is separated from the superconducting tunnel junction's top layer by a thin layer of natural aluminum oxide. No deviations from linear energy response were observed in the energy range between E=1.74 keV and E=6.49 keV. The same resolution was obtained for a single aluminum superconducting tunnel junction, where the influence of substrate events was suppressed by a metallic buffer layer between tunnel junction and substrate.
