Edible seaweed - Caulerpa lentillifera is being cultivated along the coast of Khanh Hoa province, Vietnam, and makes a relatively large contribution to the economic development of this region. Bacterial strains originating from marine sources such as those associated with seaweed and hard coral were screened for properties of promote plant growth with the capacity of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) - a phytohormone belonging to auxin group, the phosphate solubilization ability and antibacterial activity of IAA-producing strains were also performed in this study. Robust strains were identified by morphological methods with biochemical tests and analysis of 16s RNA sequences. Isolate RN06 produced high amounts of IAA, utilized inorganic phosphate, and inhibited Bacillus subtilis ATCC6633, Escherichia coli 0157, and Serratia marcescens PDL100. The IAA producer HRA5 isolated from hard coral demonstrated the ability to solubilize phosphate and exhibited antibacterial activity against B. subtilis. Morphological analysis and 16sRNA sequencing showed that isolate RN06 was the closest strain to Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and HRA5 was linked to Pseudomonas sp. This is the first report of isolated bacteria from seaweed and corals from the Vietnamese sea served as potential strains for further research of the application of biological inoculants specifically for seaweed farming. Phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) have received significant attention; however, the leaked light from their blue InGaN chips has an undesirable effect on human health. Hence, it is necessary to develop red, green, and blue-emitting phosphors, which can be excited by an NUV chip instead of a blue chip. Herein, green-emitting ZnO:Cu2+ phosphors have been successfully synthesized by a simple and facile thermal diffusion method. The obtained powder shows a broad emission band peaking at 525 nm and a strong absorption peak at 377 nm. The ZnO:5%Cu2+ phosphor annealed at 800 °C in 2 hours revealed a lifetime of 0.57 ms, an activation energy of 0.212 eV, and the highest emission intensity with (x, y) CIE colour coordinates (0.3130, 0.5253). A WLED prototype has been fabricated by coating the ZnO:5%Cu2+ phosphor on an NUV 375 nm LED chip, where this coated phosphor shows a high quantum efficiency (QE) of 56.6%. This is, so far, the highest reported QE value for ZnO-based phosphors. These results suggest that the ZnO:Cu2+ phosphor could be an excellent candidate for NUV-pumped phosphor-converted WLED applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this report, we present a quick and straightforward approach to the fabrication of active-surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates based on gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and porous silicon nanostructures (denoted by Si/Au substrate). SERS substrates were fabricated after 3-stage-process, including the Au NPs deposited on Si wafer, etching for porous Si wafer, and coating Au NPs on porous Si to produce SERS-active layers. Sputtering technique is used to coat Au NPs. The surface morphology of each Si/Au substrate in each fabrication process and their characteristics were examined in detail. The absorption spectrum of the Si/Au substrates exhibited a strong absorption band at 480 nm due to surface plasmon resonance of Au NPs. Using Si/Au substrates to detect Rhodamine B (RB) dispersed in ethanol showed that Si/Au substrates morphology greatly enhanced the Raman intensity of RB, and the trace detection limit for RB was estimated to be 0.5 ppm. Nanocomposite structures, where the Fe, Fe2O3, or Ni2O3 nanoparticles with thin carbon layers are distributed among a single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) network, are architectured using the co-arc discharge method. A synergistic effect between the nanoparticles and SWCNT is achieved with the composite structures, leading to the enhanced sensing response in ammonia detection. Thorough studies about the correlation between the electric properties and sensing performance confirm the independent operation of the receptor and transducer in the sensor structure by nanoparticles and SWCNT, respectively. Nanoparticles with a large specific surface area provide adsorption sites for the NH3 gas molecules, whereas hole carriers are supplied by the SWCNT to complete the chemisorption process. A new chemo-resistive sensor concept and its operating mechanism is proposed in our work. Furthermore, the separated receptor and transducer sensor scheme allows us more freedom in the design of sensor materials and structures, thereby enabling the design of high-performance gas sensors.
