Simple Summary: This study evaluates the optimization of computed tomographic arthrography (CTA) protocols for delineating ligamentous structures and menisci in the stifle joints of dogs. The motivation stems from existing diagnostic challenges, such as inaccuracies in physical and radiographic assessments often observed in conditions like cranial cruciate ligament rupture and meniscal injuries. Various protocols involving different concentrations and volumes of the contrast medium iohexol were tested to determine the most effective method for enhancing visualization of these structures. The findings reveal that a contrast medium concentration of 100 mgI/mL, administered at volumes of 0.3 or 0.4 mL/kg, significantly improves the clarity and detail of imaging, providing a more accurate diagnostic tool for veterinary practitioners. This optimized protocol could significantly enhance clinical outcomes by facilitating more precise diagnosis of joint diseases in dogs. CTA of the stifle joint was conducted on six healthy beagle dogs. Each dog underwent a total of nine scans to evaluate various contrast protocols. Subsequently, the acquired arthrographic images were qualitatively assessed to determine the visibility of the stifle ligaments. The quantitative evaluation of CTA revealed that the cranial and caudal cruciate ligaments were more clearly visible in groups M2 (100 mgI/mL, 0.3 mL/kg) and M3 (100 mgI/mL, 0.4 mL/kg) in comparison to S1 (50 mgI/mL, 0.2 mL/kg) and L3 (150 mgI/mL, 0.4 mL/kg). The visibility of the medial meniscus was notably lower in S1 and S2 (50 mgI/mL, 0.3 mL/kg), while the lateral meniscus exhibited reduced visibility in S1. Overall, the high contrast settings (M2, M3) generally improved the visualization of the meniscofemoral ligament, meniscotibial ligament, and the intermeniscal ligament. Simple Summary: This study focused on understanding how radiation therapy, a common treatment for cancer, affects the skin of dogs. While radiation is effective at destroying cancer cells, it can also cause damage to healthy skin, leading to various side effects like redness, peeling, changes in skin color, and sores. Over nine weeks, we monitored these skin changes in dogs, observing that radiation led to increased inflammation and stress in the skin cells, as well as significant disruptions in how skin cells grow and heal. We also noticed changes in specific proteins and genes related to skin inflammation, healing, and cell death. These findings help us better understand how radiation therapy impacts the skin and provide valuable information for managing these side effects in dogs. Radiation therapy is a crucial cancer treatment, but it can damage healthy tissues, leading to side effects like skin injuries and molecular alterations. This study aimed to elucidate histological and molecular changes in canine skin post-radiation therapy (post-RT) over nine weeks, focusing on inflammation, stem cell activity, angiogenesis, keratinocyte regeneration, and apoptosis. Four male beagles received a cumulative radiation dose of 48 Gy, followed by clinical observations, histological examinations, and an RT-qPCR analysis of skin biopsies. Histological changes correlated with clinical recovery from inflammation. A post-RT analysis revealed a notable decrease in the mRNA levels of Oct4, Sox2, and Nanog from weeks 1 to 9. VEGF 188 levels initially saw a slight increase at week 1, but they had significantly declined by week 9. Both mRNA and protein levels of COX–2 and Keratin 10 significantly decreased over the 9 weeks following RT, although COX–2 expression surged in the first 2 weeks, and Keratin 10 levels increased at weeks 4 to 5 compared to normal skin. Apoptosis peaked at 2 weeks and diminished, nearing normal by 9 weeks. Purpose: Postoperative laryngeal edema (PLE) is a common complication in patients undergoing head and neck surgery, leading to symptoms such as odynophagia, dysphagia, or potential airway obstruction. However, the prevalence and risk factors of PLE in patients undergoing neck dissection (ND) have not been well investigated. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted in three steps. Initially, a pilot study of 50 consecutive ND patients revealed a preliminary PLE prevalence of 0.34. Then, the medical records of an additional 295 ND patients were reviewed to estimate the prevalence of PLE with a total width of 95% confidence interval (CI) of ± 5%. Finally, multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors for PLE (n = 343). Results: PLE occurred in 29.4% [95%CI 24.4–34.4%] of patients undergoing any type of ND, with the most common symptoms of odynophagia (75.0%) and dyspnea (11.1%). Hospital stay was just one day longer in PLE patients, responding well with short-term steroid treatment (p = 0.0057). In multivariable analyses, no significant association was found between PLE occurrence and airway management. However, body mass index and the American Society of Anesthesiologists classification correlated with PLE. More importantly, surgery for oro-hypopharynx or supraglottis tumors (odds ratio, OR = 3.019, [95%CI 1.166–7.815]) and lymph node level 2(3) ND (OR = 4.214 to 5.279, [95%CI 1.160–20.529]) were significant risk factors for PLE. Conclusions: PLE developed in approximately 30% of ND patients, causing uncomfortable symptoms. Early diagnosis and intervention of PLE in high-risk patients can improve patient care and outcomes. A 4-month-old intact male Sapsaree dog was referred due to a history of postprandial regurgitation following consumption of solid food. Thoracic radiography revealed focal leftward displacement of the thoracic trachea at T1 to T4 vertebrae levels. Barium contrast radiography revealed focal dilation of the cranial thoracic esophagus at the heart base level. Persistent right aortic arch (PRAA) with an aberrant left subclavian artery branching from the patent ductus arteriosus was diagnosed by computed tomography angiography (CTA). Although barium contrast radiography can presumptive diagnose PRAA, CTA should be considered for identifying additional vascular anomalies, specific types, and surgical planning. In human, ultrasonography is used to measure the pennation angle in various muscles to identify muscle functions such as force production, and to study alterations of the pennation angle during muscle contraction, hypertrophy, and atrophy. However, assessments of the pennation angle have not yet been conducted in dogs. This study aims to assess the normal pennation angle of the tibialis cranialis muscle in dogs using ultrasound and to detect changes in this angle in dogs with muscular atrophy. Sixty-eight healthy dogs were examined to establish normal values, while 12 ataxic and 12 lame dogs with suspected hindlimb muscle atrophy were also included. The pennation angle was measured using ultrasound at the midpoint between the proximal end of the tibia and the malleolus, measuring the angle between the muscle bundle and the deep aponeurosis. To confirm the significance between the 5 breeds and to identify a difference between normal and atrophied muscles, statistical analysis was conducted. The study found no significant difference in pennation angle between breeds, with mean values (± standard deviation) of 4.97° (± 1.88) in neutral, 7.25° (± 2.68) in flexion, and 3.31° (± 1.33) in extension positions. Decrease of the pennation angle was identified in muscle atrophy and the flexion position was determined to be the most appropriate for pennation angle measurement of tibialis cranialis muscle. We recommend considering the pennation angle as a valuable indicator of muscle health in dogs, as it demonstrates significant potential for diagnosing and monitoring muscular conditions. Simple Summary: This report describes the case of a sinus venosus atrial septal defect, concurrent with partial anomalous pulmonary venous connections, which is a rare congenital heart disease in dogs. In patients with hemodynamically significant changes and clinical signs, treatment of the defect is essential. There are various treatment options for an atrial septal defect, including surgical correction under cardiopulmonary bypass or inflow occlusion, and interventional closure with occluders. In this case, given the significant size of the defect and the presence of concomitant vascular anomalies, performing closure with a pericardial patch under a cardiopulmonary bypass is considered as the most suitable approach. Additionally, employing a cardiac model from computed tomography imaging facilitated a preoperative simulation, enhancing the precision and efficiency of the surgical procedure, both in terms of accuracy and time. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case in dogs with a sinus venosus atrial septal defect, accompanied by partial anomalous pulmonary venosus connections, where a computed tomography-based three-dimensional cardiac model was created to precisely identify the defect's location and associated cardiovascular anomalies, leading to a successful surgical intervention under a cardiopulmonary bypass. Sinus venosus atrial septal defects (SVASDs), concurrent with partial anomalous pulmonary venous connections (PAPVCs), are a rare congenital heart disease in dogs. Surgical correction is essential when clinical signs or significant hemodynamic changes are present. We aimed to report on the successful surgical correction of an SVASD with PAPVCs, using a computed tomography (CT)-based customized 3D cardiac model. A 10-month-old male poodle was referred for corrective surgery for an ASD. Echocardiography confirmed a hemodynamically significant left-to-right shunting flow through an interatrial septal defect and severe right-sided heart volume overload. For a comprehensive diagnosis, a CT scan was performed, which confirmed an SVASD with PAPVCs. A customized 3D cardiac model was used for preoperative decision-making and surgical rehearsal. The defect was repaired using an autologous pericardial patch under a cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Temporary pacing was applied for sinus bradycardia and third-degree atrioventricular block. The patient recovered from the anesthesia without further complications. The pacemaker was removed during hospitalization and the patient was discharged without complications 2 weeks post-surgery. At the three-month follow-up, there was no shunting flow in the interatrial septum and the right-sided volume overload had been resolved. The cardiac medications were discontinued, and there were no complications. This report indicates the validity of surgical correction under CPB for an SVASD with PAPVCs, and the advantages of utilizing a CT-based 3D cardiac model for preoperative planning to increase the surgical success rate. Background: Bone‐subtraction computed tomography angiography (CTA) (BSCTA) is a new technique designed to overcome the limitation of three‐dimensional CTA, where the vessels surrounded by bone and calcification can be obscured. An optimal contrast CT protocol for intracranial artery visualization with BSCTA has yet to be established in dogs. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal contrast protocol of CTA for visualizing intracranial artery using an automatic bone‐subtraction technique in dogs. Methods: Brain CTA was performed four times for each of nine healthy beagle dogs to cover all the contrast protocols: two different contrast iodine concentrations (300 and 370 mgI/mL) and two different contrast media injection rates (2 and 4 mL/s). Bone removal post‐processing was performed automatically by subtracting the non‐enhanced CT data from the contrast CT data using a dedicated workstation. The bone‐subtracted intracranial vessels were analysed for quantitative and qualitative evaluation. Results: Quantitative evaluation showed significantly higher CT attenuation values for the group with a 370 mgI/mL iodine content at a rate of 4 mL/s than the two groups with a 300 mgI/mL iodine content at the rates of 2 and 4 mL/s (p < 0.001). Qualitative assessment revealed significantly higher mean scores for the 370 mgI/mL groups than the 300 mgI/mL groups and significantly higher mean scores for the 4 mL/s groups than the 2 mL/s groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The optimal contrast protocol for BSCTA suggests that high iodine material concentration and high injection rate should be used for strong arterial attenuation and great visualization of the intracranial arterial structure in dogs. Peritoneal lymphomatosis (PL) is a rare lymphoid neoplasm in dogs. A nine-year-old spayed female Labrador retriever presented with pleural and peritoneal effusions. Diagnostic imaging revealed diffuse nodular to massive lesions in the mesentery, particularly in the caudal abdomen. While the superficial lymph nodes did not show significant changes, enlargement was observed in the intra-abdominal and intra-thoracic lymph nodes. Cytological and flow cytometric analyses of the effusion indicated the presence of large B-cell lymphocytes expressing CD3-/CD5-/CD14-/CD21-/CD34+/CD45+/CD79a+. Simple Summary: Cerebral perfusion provides important information about capillary-level hemodynamics of the brain parenchyma, especially in conditions such as an ischemic stroke, brain tumors, and inflammation. The assessment of brain perfusion in dogs has been performed using computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR), sonography, single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and 2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography. However, these methods, except for CT, have limitations and difficulties in obtaining quantitative values. In addition, some of them are cost-prohibitive, particularly SPECT and MR imaging. CT scanners are widely available in clinical hospitals, making CT-based perfusion techniques more accessible for studies. The purpose of this study was to investigate the normal range of perfusion determined via CT in the brains of healthy dogs and to compare values between white matter and gray matter, differences in aging, and each hemisphere. The results of our study showed that the cerebral blood volume and cerebral blood flow values of white matter in the frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital lobes were significantly lower than gray matter values. No significant differences were observed in the age-related variations or between the left and right hemispheres in other brain regions. In addition, quantitative values of CT perfusion parameters in a specific brain region were presented. This information provided by our study might contribute to a better understanding of brain perfusion in healthy dogs, potentially leading to the earlier diagnosis and improved treatment of brain diseases. Brain computed tomography (CT) perfusion is a technique that allows for the fast evaluation of cerebral hemodynamics. However, quantitative studies of brain CT perfusion in veterinary medicine are lacking. The purpose of this study was to investigate the normal range of perfusion determined via CT in brains of healthy dogs and to compare values between white matter and gray matter, differences in aging, and each hemisphere. Nine intact male beagle dogs were prospectively examined using dynamic CT scanning and post-processing for brain perfusion. Regional cerebral blood volume (rCBV), regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), mean transit time, and time to peak were calculated. Tissue ROIs were drawn in the gray matter and white matter of the frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital lobes; caudate nucleus; thalamus; piriform lobe; hippocampus; and cerebellum. Significant differences were observed between the white matter regions and gray matter regions for rCBV and rCBF (p < 0.05). However, no significant differences were identified between hemispheres and between young and old groups in brain regions. The findings obtained in this study involving healthy beagle dogs might serve as a reference for regional CT perfusion values in specific brain regions. Simple Summary: Parainfluenza virus 5 (PIV5) has been known for a long time. The virus is detected in various animals suffering from different clinical diseases. However, the pathogenicity of PIV5 is largely unconfirmed. Thus, it is necessary to continue researching for the prevalence, genetic diversity, and evolution characteristic of PIV5. The results of this study confirmed a permanent prevalence of PIV5 in Republic of Korea, identified three field strains with more divergence, and elucidated the evolutionary path of PIV5 in which a few codons of the F and HN genes had an elevated rate of non-synonymous substitutions. This study applied a molecular-based method to detect parainfluenza virus 5 (PIV5) collected from 2016 to 2018 in nine provinces of Republic of Korea. We demonstrated that PIV5 was detectable in both serum and pooled organs at an average positive rate of 1.78% (99/5566). Among these, the complete genome sequence of 15,246 nucleotides was obtained for 12 field strains. Three out of the 12 strains had the lowest genetic identity (96.20–96.68%) among the 21 porcine PIV5 genomes collected in Germany, China, India, and Republic of Korea from 1998 to 2017. By analyzing a large collection of complete genome sequences of the structural protein-coding F and HN genes, this study proposed a classification of PIV5 into two lineages, 1 and 2, and identified that group 2.2.2 within sub-lineage 2.2 was substantially divergent. The evolution of two structural protein-coding genes was largely under purifying selection. A few codons (6/9 for the F gene, 7/8 for the HN gene) had elevated dN/dS values, which were loaded on internal branches and were predicted to be related to beneficial trait(s) of the virus. The objective of the present study was to compare the feasibility, safety, and satisfaction of an immersive virtual reality system developed specifically for cognitive-sensory-motor training among older adult fallers and nonfallers and adult individuals. This was a cross-sectional observational study, and 20 adults, 20 nonfaller older adults, and 20 faller older adults were assessed. The primary outcome was feasibility assessed with safety and satisfaction measures. Safety outcomes were associated with adverse events occurred during the experience with the immersive virtual reality system (IVRS), assessed through the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire and by registering the falls, pain, or any discomfort reported by the participants. Satisfaction was assessed with a structured questionnaire, answered after 10 minutes of experiencing the IVRS. The dates were assessed with one-way analysis of variance or the Kruskal–Wallis test and Bonferroni post hoc test. The results showed that the IVRS was safe and the participants related good satisfaction with the system. Most of participants related no symptoms (93.6 percent) or light cybersickness symptoms (6.0 percent). There were no occurrences of falls or pain associated with the IVRS. Technology adoption is an important solution for physicians to increase work efficiency, and thus deal with role conflict among their multiple job roles. Prior studies have not investigated how multiple job roles and role conflict influence physicians' technology adoption intentions. Based on role strain theory and role identity theory, we present a model of physicians' technology adoption intentions to support their primary (clinical care) versus secondary (teaching or research) job roles. We test the model using surveys with 156 physicians at nine medical schools in Korea. The results of our data analysis largely support our hypotheses. Role overload in each of their job roles increases role conflict between any pair of associated roles. Furthermore, role conflict between a physician's primary and secondary role is affected more by role overload in the secondary role than by overload in the primary role. Moreover, the impact of role conflict on technology adoption intentions is also influenced by the hierarchical relationship between two roles. A 5-year-old castrated male domestic shorthair cat was referred for further investigation of pulmonary nodules incidentally detected on thoracic radiographs. Thoracic radiographs identified ill-defined soft tissue opacity nodules with small faint mineral opacity. Thoracic computed tomography (CT) revealed that bronchial dilation and bronchial wall thickening in bilateral cranial and accessory lung lobes. Round to ellipsoid mineralized concretions were found embedded in the intrabronchial soft tissue attenuation material. Based on radiography, CT, and cytology, the patient was tentatively diagnosed as having broncholithiasis with chronic bronchitis. Cutaneous lymphoma is rare in cats. An 11-year-old spayed female Persian cat presented with crust, ulceration, and multiple nodules on the shoulder and forelimb for 2 months. Computed tomography revealed a diffuse, irregularly margined lesion in the dorsal cutis extending from cervical to thoracic vertebrae. Cytological evaluation predominantly revealed large round cells with multilobulated nuclei and basophilic cytoplasm. Histopathological examination confirmed round CD3+/PAX5- cells packed in the dermis. Thus, the diagnosis of non-epitheliotropic cutaneous lymphoma with a diffuse large T-cell type was made. Porcine circovirus 4 (PCV4), a novel and unclassified member of the genus Circovirus, was first reported in China in 2019. Aiming to provide more evidence about the active circulation of PCV4, this study screened 335 pooled internal organs and detected the virus (i) at a rate of 3.28%, (ii) from both clinically healthy and clinically sick pigs of various age groups, and (iii) in six out of nine provinces of Korea. The complete genomic sequence of the Korean PCV4 strain (E115) was 1,770 nucleotides in length and had 98.5%–98.9% identity to three PCV4 strains currently available at GenBank. Utilizing a set of bioinformatic programs, it was revealed that the Korean PCV4 strain contained several genomic features of (i) a palindrome stem–loop structure with a conserved nonanucleotide, (ii) packed overlapping ORFs oriented in different directions and (iii) two intergenic regions in between genes encoding the putative replication‐associated protein (Rep) and capsid (Cap) proteins. This study also predicted the presence of essential elements for the replication of circoviruses in all PCV4 strains, for example the origin of DNA replication, endonuclease and helicase domains of Rep, and the nuclear localization signal on the putative Cap protein. Finally, based on the phylogeny inferred from sequences of the putative Rep protein, this study further clarified the genetic relationships between PCV4 and other CRESS DNA viruses in general and circoviruses in particular. The aim of this prospective study was to investigate the effects of focal spot size of X-ray tube on sharpness of clinical radiographic images of dogs and cats. Radiographic images of 24 stifle joints, 15 carpi, 18 lumbar spines, 61 thoraxes, and 47 abdomens of 102 dogs and 4 cats were obtained in the present study, using 2 X-ray tubes with nominal focal spots of 2.0 mm and 0.6 mm, respectively. The sharpness of specific anatomical structures in all the images of 5 projections was assessed. The radiographic sharpness of various anatomical structures of lumbar spine and cortex of stifle with fine focal spot was increased significantly compared with broad focal spot images. In addition, the blurred motion was significantly higher in the fine focal spot images of thorax. In conclusion, our study suggests that a selective use of fine foci for imaging of lumbar spine or cortex of stifle enhanced radiographic sharpness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 10-year-old, spayed female, Doberman Pinscher dog presented with right forelimb lameness. On physical examination, painful reaction and crepitation were present at the right shoulder. Radiographic evaluation of the shoulder revealed nothing remarkable. On the ultrasonography of the right shoulder joint, 2 small echogenic masses accompanied by reverberation artifacts were observed in the right biceps tendon near its origin at the supraglenoid tuberosity. Based on these findings, we suspected biceps calcifying tendinopathy. Clinical signs resolved intermittently after administration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. Purpose: This study aimed to gather opinions from medical educators on the possibility of introducing an interview to the Korean Medical Licensing Examination (KMLE) to assess professional attributes. Specifically following topics were dealt with: the appropriate timing and tool to assess unprofessional conduct; the possiblity of prevention of unprofessional conduct by introducing an interview to the KMLE; and the possibility of implementation of an interview to the KMLE. Methods: A cross-sectional study approach based on a survey questionnaire was adopted. We analyzed 104 pieces of news about doctors' unprofessional conduct to determine the deficient professional attributes. We derived 24 items of unprofessional conduct and developed the questionnaire and surveyed 250 members of the Korean Society of Medical Education 2 times. Descriptive statistics, cross-tabulation analysis, and Fisher's exact test were applied to the responses. The answers to the open-ended questions were analyzed using conventional content analysis. Results: In the survey, 49 members (19.6%) responded. Out of 49, 24 (49.5%) responded in the 2nd survey. To assess unprofessional conduct, there was no dominant timing among basic medical education (BME), KMLE, and continuing professional development (CPD). There was no overwhelming assessment tool among written examination, objective structured clinical examination, practice observation, and interview. Response rates of "impossible" (49.0%) and "possible" (42.9%) suggested an interview of the KMLE prevented unprofessional conduct. In terms of implementation, "impossible" (50.0%) was selected more often than "possible" (33.3%). Conclusion: Professional attributes should be assessed by various tools over the period from BME to CPD. Hence, it may be impossible to introduce an interview to assess professional attributes to the KMLE, and a system is needed such as self-regulation by the professional body rather than licensing examination. A 12-year-old neutered male Golden Retriever presented with a progressively enlarging mass in the submandibular region. Histopathological diagnosis confirmed lymphangiosarcoma with metastasis to the liver and spleen. The pleomorphic neoplastic endothelial cells of the tumor grow directly on bundles of dermal collagen, forming numerous clefts and interconnecting channels that are devoid of conspicuous hematic elements. As lymphangiosarcoma is an uncommon malignant neoplasm, the number of previously reported cases and information of the tumor is limited. New viruses are continuously emerging and recently there have been many great concerns on severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS‐CoV‐2). Nanographene oxide (nanoGO) has received much attention and is widely investigated to be utilised in therapy for infectious diseases by viruses. Thus, antiviral activity of nanoGO was evaluated using the porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (PEDV), bovine coronavirus (BCoV), and SARS‐CoV‐2, which are all Alpha‐ and Beta‐coronavirus. In a virus inhibition assay, the three viruses were inhibited by nanoGO in a dose‐dependent manner, including attempts in the presence of high serum solution which partially mimicked biological fluid. Avian Metapneumovirus (aMPV) is a causative agent of respiratory disease complex in turkeys and chickens that has recently been detected in Vietnam. Due to its novelty, this study was conducted to elucidate the distribution of aMPV in several provinces in northern Vietnam. By the application of Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and nested Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR), this study demonstrated the circulation of aMPV in 12 out of 14 cities/provinces with positive rates of 37.6% and 17.2%, respectively. All nested RT-PCR positive samples were aMPV subgroup B. By pairing the detection results with age groups, it was observed that aMPV infections occurred in chickens of all ages. Additionally, by genetic characterization, aMPV strains were demonstrated to not be attenuated vaccine viruses and to belong to at least two genetic clades. Background: Torque teno viruses (TTVs) have been detected worldwide, from a wide range of animals. Up to date, few studies focused on the prevalence of TTVs in general and swine torque teno viruses (TTSuVs) in particular in Korean swine farms. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the appearance of TTSuVs and TTVs in sick pigs during the 2017–2018 period. Materials and Methods: Molecular‐based method using TTSuV1‐, TTSuV2‐ and TTV3‐specific primers was used to screen for the viruses from either sera or pooled internal organs of sick pigs. For genetic characterization, genomic sequences of TTVs were sequenced by a primer walking method. Several bioinformatic tools have been utilized to investigate the genomic organization and genetic relationship of TTVs. Results: Two years of prevalence survey reveal that the prevalence of TTSuV2 is about twice that of TTSuV1. Furthermore, we identified TTV of genogroup 3 in swine pooled organ samples. The genome of two strains, M265_Korea_2017 and N119_Korea_2018, are 3,817 bp in size; M265_2017 has three open reading frames (ORFs); and N119_2018 strain has four ORFs. The complete genome nucleotide sequencing of the two strains shows 98.4% homology, and the phylogenetic analysis of Open reading frame (ORF)1 indicates that the strains are located close to TUPB strain subgroup C of genogroup 3. Swine abortion caused by viruses as well as bacteria has caused many economic losses in domestic farms over the years; however, bacterial abortion has not yet been studied in Korea. Several bacterial species were isolated from aborted fetuses (n = 103) for which the cause of death was not viral abortion. Among them, we focused on Aerococcus viridans, which had the highest positive rate within three provinces (Gangwon, Jeonnam and Gyeongnam). A total of 16 isolates were identified as A. viridans by matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization‐time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐TOF MS), and 13 were characterized by both antibiotic resistance and 16S rRNA gene analysis. Based on antibiotic susceptibility testing result, eight antimicrobials could not effectively eliminate the present isolation (more than 40% of isolates can resist these antibiotics), while all except two strains were susceptible to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. This study aimed to investigate the technical feasibility of a percutaneous endoscopic limited-dorsal laminectomy (PELDL) and to evaluate if the decompression and examination of the lumbosacral vertebral canals could be achieved using an endoscope in small dogs. A total of eight fresh canine cadavers were used for the study. Following the injection of a barium and agarose mixture (BA-gel), which simulates intervertebral disc herniation, a PELDL was performed over L7-S1 in these animals. Computed tomography (CT) scans were obtained pre- and postoperatively to evaluate the surgical outcomes. All the procedures were completed with a clear visualisation of the spinal cord and removal of the BA-gel. The mean surgery time for the PELDL was 30.00 ± 12.01 minutes. In two dogs, iatrogenic nerve root injuries were caused by the surgical instruments during the operation. The CT scans showed that the amount of BA-gel removed was sufficient for a spinal-cord decompression. A PELDL could be used for the BA-gel removal to decompress the spinal cord and provide a clear view of the spinal canal. Therefore, it could be used as an alternative surgical option to treat lumbosacral disc disease in dogs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Porcine epidemic diarrhoea virus (PEDV) is one of the major pathogens causing acute enteritis, which is characterised by vomiting and watery diarrhoea and commonly leads to high rates of mortality and morbidity in suckling piglets. Chitosan has been regarded as a promising natural disinfectant. In this study, the disinfectant effect and mammalian-cell toxicity of chitosan were evaluated against PEDV using Vero cells. A 0.01% solution of chitosan was determined to be an effective disinfectant. In addition, no evidence of toxicity was observed during the cell toxicity test; on the contrary, chitosan promoted cell proliferation. Porcine circovirus type 3 (PCV3) has been reported in many countries such as USA, China, Korea and many European countries during 2015–2018. The six PCV3 strains named IH, SJ, N5, N10, N13 and N62 were detected out of 220 samples by PCR methods while the prevalence our study was conducted in 2017 to 2018. The six detected strains were hard to genotype with reference viruses due to their diverse phylogenetic relationship. PCV3 capsid, ORF3 and replicase protein coding genes were reassembled at the nucleotide sequence level, then 16 new reassembled PCV3 sequences were generated. Based on the maximum likelihood mapping analysis of 303 PCV3 sequences a model with a combination of replicase, ORF3 and capsid protein coding genes was selected as the most appropriate target for genotyping, which provided the best support for the clade classification into three genotypes and several subtypes (genotype 1, genotype 2; subtype: a and b, genotype 3; subtype a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h). This study, the IH_Korea_2017 and N62_Korea_2018 strains belong to genogroup 3 (subtype a) the SJ_Korea_2017 strain genogroup 3 (subtype g) and the N5, N10, N13 Korea_ 2018 strains genogroup 3 (subtype f), respectively. Purpose: Today's students have distinctive generational characteristics and increased psychopathology and generational tension. The authors investigated the negative experiences of Late Millennial students in medical school to draw implications for student support. Methods: The authors explored medical students' negative experiences using the critical incident technique. The authors conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with 13 medical students, between February and May 2016. The authors focused on occurrences that significantly influenced medical students' school lives negatively from the students' perspective. All interviews were recorded and transcribed. The authors classified incidents into frames of reference for the use of faculty development for student support. Results: The authors extracted 22 themes from a total 334 codes and classified them into eight subcategories. Finally, four categories emerged from frames of reference. Students manipulate relationships and colluding for better specialty choice. They experience uncontrolled rifts in interpersonal relationships between peers including lawsuits, sexual assaults, and social network service conflicts. Today's students feel resentment towards dependent hierarchical relationships with seniors. They struggle with gender discrimination but perpetuate outdated gender role toward the opposite gender. Conclusion: Faculty members should understand today's students' level of career stress and desire for work life balance. They should motivate students' professional identity, promote assertiveness against unfair authorities, and focus on mental health, teamwork, and relationship building. Background: Combination therapy with glucocorticoids and adjunctive immunomodulating drugs has been generally accepted as a standard treatment regimen for meningoencephalomyelitis of unknown etiology (MUE). We hypothesized that treatment with MMF as an adjunctive agent along with glucocorticoids would be effective and well-tolerated protocol in dogs with MUE. Eighty-six dogs with MUE between May 2009 and June 2017 were included (59 females and 27 males; mean age of 5.93 years; mean body weight of 3.83 kg). The medical records of dogs with MUE treated with prednisolone and MMF were retrospectively evaluated to determine the therapeutic response, survival time, and treatment-related adverse effects. Results: A partial or complete response (CR) was recorded for 75 dogs. The overall median survival time from the initiation of treatment was 558 days. Dogs that showed CR with no relapse over the treatment period (from diagnosis to death) had significantly longer median survival times. A significantly higher mortality hazard ratio of 4.546 was recorded in dogs that failed to achieve CR. The interval between the onset of clinical signs and the clinical presentation was not significantly associated with CR, relapse rate, and survival time. Adverse effects included gastrointestinal upsets in 26 dogs (30.23%), sporadic infections in 17 dogs (19.77%), and pancreatitis in seven dogs (8.14%). Conclusions: The results suggest that adjunctive MMF treatment for MUE is safe and comparable to other immunosuppressive protocols. Background: with the advantage of sequencing technology, many novel porcine parvoviruses (PPV) rather than PPV1 has been reported. This study ultilized specific PCR- based method and gene- based analysis to study the presence and genetic diversity of porcine parvoviruses in South Korea in 2018. Results: The present study was conducted in 2018 and found PPV1 and PPV7 in nine out of 151 field samples (organs and semen) by the PCR method. Among these, the complete genome sequences of five strains (N2, N91, N108, N133, and N141) were recovered. Phylogenic analysis revealed that the strains N2, N91, and N108 belong to the PPV1 genotype, while N133 and N141 belong to PPV7 genotype. The PPV7 strains collected in this study had deletion mutations in the VP2 gene but differed from that of PPV7 strains collected in 2017. Among the PPV1 strains, the amino acid variations in the B cell epitopes of the VP2 protein were observed between three Korean PPV1 field strains (N2, N91, and N108) and the reference PPV1 strains. Those substitutions resulted in six out of 12 predicted epitopes having significant differences in antigenic index compared to the other PPV1 strains. Conclusions: This study confirmed the presence of different genotypes of porcine parvoviruses in South Korea. The PPVs circulating in South Korea were phylogenetically classified as PPV1 and PPV7 genotypes. This study was purposed to make the referenced range of stomach antral contraction strain in 50 dogs using 2-dimensional speckle tracking. In addition, the strain results were compared among body condition scores to reveal the correlations of obesity among the subjects of the study. Finally, the medetomidine group that was comprised of 10 dogs was compared with the normal group to identify the medetomidine pharmacologic effect in the stomach antral contraction. Clinically healthy 50 dogs were recruited for the study. In an ultrasonographic examination, the stomach antrum region was scanned, and at least one cycle of antral contraction was recorded. The peak strain of antral contraction in healthy dogs was 58.2 ± 20.47% (mean ± SD). The obesity group showed a high strain result and there were significant correlations between the body condition score (BCS) 2, BCS 3 groups and BCS 8 group. The medetomidine group revealed a low strain result and was significantly correlated with normal group. Hypoxia and limited vascularization inhibit bone growth and recovery after surgical debridement to treat osteomyelitis. Similarly, despite significant efforts to create functional tissue‐engineered organs, clinical success is often hindered by insufficient oxygen diffusion and poor vascularization. To overcome these shortcomings, we previously used the oxygen carrier perfluorooctane (PFO) to develop PFO emulsion‐loaded hollow microparticles (PFO‐HPs). PFO‐HPs act as a local oxygen source that increase cell viability and maintains the osteogenic differentiation potency of human periosteum‐derived cells (hPDCs) under hypoxic conditions. In the present study, we used a miniature pig model of mandibular osteomyelitis to investigate bone regeneration using hPDCs seeded on PFO‐HPs (hPDCs/PFO‐HP) or hPDCs seeded on phosphate‐buffered saline (PBS)‐HPs (hPDCs/PBS‐HP). Osteomyelitis is characterized by a series of microbial invasion, vascular disruption, bony necrosis, and sequestrum formation due to impaired host defense response. Sequential plain radiography, computed tomography (CT), and 3D reconstructed CT images revealed new bone formation was more advanced in defects that had been implanted with the hPDCs/PFO‐HPs than in defects implanted with the hPDCs/PBS‐HP. Background: The appropriate level of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) during intra-operative mechanical ventilation remains unclear.Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different levels of PEEP with low tidal volume (low-VT) ventilation in a steep Trendelenburg position (30°) and pneumoperitoneum on oxygenation, respiratory mechanics and ventilation distribution using electrical impedance tomography.Design: A randomised controlled trial.Setting: Single university secondary care centre, conducted from January 2017 to December 2017.Patients: Forty female patients, aged 20 to 60 years, and of American Society of Anesthesiologists' (ASA) physical status 1 or 2, undergoing elective robotic gynaecological surgery were included.Intervention: Forty patients were allocated randomly to a PEEP4 (PEEP 4 cmH2O) group or a PEEP8 (PEEP 8 cmH2O) group.Main Outcome Measures: The primary outcomes were respiratory mechanics. The secondary outcomes included changes in ventilation distribution across the ventral and dorsal regions of interest and postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) using a modified clinical pulmonary infection score.Results: There was no difference in PaO2 at any time point. The peak inspiratory pressure (PIP) and mean airway pressure (MPAW) of the PEEP4 group were lower than those of the PEEP8 group (P < 0.001). The oxygenation factor in the PEEP4 group was higher than that in the PEEP8 group during mechanical ventilation at all times. There was no difference in the fractional distribution of end-expiratory ventilation according to region of interest between the two groups.Conclusion: Both 4 and 8 cmH2O of PEEP with low-VT ventilation can be used for robotic gynaecological surgery that requires a steep Trendelenburg position and pneumoperitoneum. An 8-year-old intact male mixed-breed dog presented with tetraparesis, right side head tilt, and cluster seizure-like episodes. Based on the magnetic resonance imaging and cerebrospinal fluid analysis results, meningoencephalitis of an unknown aetiology was strongly suspected. The patient survived for 963 days under mycophenolate mofetil plus prednisolone therapy and was ultimately diagnosed with necrotising leukoencephalitis. This report describes the clinical findings, the serial magnetic resonance imaging characteristics, and the histopathologic features of a case of necrotising leukoencephalitis and the long-term survival after mycophenolate mofetil plus prednisolone therapy. The goals of this study were, first, to evaluate the feasibility of inducing gastric perforation with 99% alcohol injection after electrocautery (EA-method), and, second, to observe "enhanced peritoneal stripe sign (EPSS)" and other lesions upon induction of gastric perforation. Six clinically normal beagle dogs were prepared for gastric perforation using endoscopy. After gastric perforation, EPSS and other lesions on ultrasonography were observed eventually (at 0 h, 3 h, day 1, day 2, day 3, day 4, day 5, and day 6). We graded the EPSS depending on its width and number. EPSS was observed until day 4 of the examination in all the 6 dogs. The grades of EPSS were the highest at 3 h and declined gradually. Peritoneal effusion was observed in all dogs at 3 h and on day 1. Regional bright mesenteric fat was confirmed in all dogs on days 3 and 4. In conclusion, gastric perforation can be induced by EA-method. EPSS and peritoneal effusion appear at a very early stage, and regional bright mesenteric fat was identified on days 3 and 4 in almost all dogs with gastric perforation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A seven-year-old Toy Poodle was presented for progressive ataxia and seizure episodes. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed inflammatory lesions in the cerebrum and brainstem. Management with imatinib mesylate, prednisolone and hydroxyurea were initiated and resulted in complete resolution of the clinical signs. In regular magnetic resonance imaging scans, the overall appearance of the lesions deteriorated but improved again after an increase in the imatinib mesylate dose. The patient had not shown any neurological signs until death and survived for 1052 days after initial presentation. On histopathological examination, the patient was diagnosed with disseminated granulomatous meningoencephalitis involving the cerebrum and brainstem. Immunohistochemical staining was performed on the five types of tyrosine kinase (PDGFR-a, PDGFR-ß, VEGFR-2, c-Kit and c-Abl proteins), which constitute therapeutic targets for conventional multitargeted tyrosine kinase inhibitors. The immunohistochemical analysis revealed that all these tyrosine kinases were expressed in the brain samples. The present report describes the first case of the use of imatinib mesylate therapy for granulomatous meningoencephalitis in the dog. Therapy with imatinib mesylate plus glucocorticoids appears promising as a new therapeutic intervention in meningoencephalitis of unknown aetiology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A 2-year-old, spayed female, Korean domestic short-hair cat was presented with depression and vomiting. The patient had history of weight loss lasting seven months. Physical examination revealed icterus in the pinna, oral mucosa, and sclera. Based on ultrasonography and computed tomography, tentative diagnosis was extrahepatic biliary tract obstruction with acquired portosystemic shunt (PSS). Tumor or inflammation of hepatobiliary system was suspected as the cause of obstruction of the common bile duct. But it could not be determined without biopsy. An 11-year-old, castrated male dog presented with a 3-month history of cough and depression. Auscultation revealed systolic murmur and thoracic radiographs showing enlargement of both the atrium and left ventricle. Echocardiography showed thickened mitral valve and moderate-to-severe left atrial enlargement. Additionally, M-mode echocardiography showed symmetric left ventricular wall thickening and systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve, while Doppler imaging revealed high velocity turbulent flow through the left ventricular outflow tract. Based on echocardiography, this case was diagnosed with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. After 5 months, the dog was clinically static in radiography and echocardiography. Purpose Early prediction of treatment outcomes represents an essential step towards increased treatment efficacy and survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In this study, we performed two-dimensional electrophoresis (2-DE) followed by protein profiling to identify biomarkers predictive of therapeutic outcomes in patients with HCC who received liverdirected therapy (LDTx) involving local radiotherapy (RT), and studied the underlying mechanisms of the identified proteins. Materials and Methods 2-DE analysis was conducted by pooling sera from patients with a good or poor prognosis; serum proteomic profiles of the two groups were compared and analyzed using matrixassisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Identified proteins were confirmed via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. An invasion assay was performed after overexpression and knockdown of target protein in Huh7 cells. Results Levels of inter-alpha inhibitor H4 (ITIH4), fibrinogen gamma chain, keratin 9/1 complex, carbonic anhydrase I, and carbonmonoxyhemoglobin S were changed by more than 4-fold in response to LDTx. In particular, pre-LDTx ITIH4 expression was more than 5-fold higher in patients with a good prognosis, compared to patients with a poor prognosis. The migration ability of Huh7 cells was significantly suppressed and enhanced by ITIH4 overexpression and knockdown, respectively. The tumors of patients with HCC and a good prognosis expressed high levels of ITIH4, compared to those of patients with a poor prognosis. Conclusion Taken together, ITIH4 may be a potential therapeutic target that could inhibit cancer metastasis, as well as a prognostic marker for patients with HCC who are receiving LDTx. Background: We performed whole human genome expression analysis in placenta tissue (normal and T21) samples in order to investigate gene expression into the pathogenesis of trisomy 21 (T21) placenta. We profiled the whole human genome expression of placental samples from normal and T21 fetuses using the GeneChip Human Genome U133 plus 2.0 array. Based on these data, we predicted the functions of differentially expressed genes using bioinformatics tools. Results: A total of 110 genes had different expression patterns in the T21 placentas than they did in the normal placentas. Among them, 77 genes were up-regulated in the T21 placenta and 33 genes were down-regulated compared to their respective levels in normal placentas. Over half of the up-regulated genes (59.7%, n = 46) were located on HSA21. Up-regulated genes in the T21 placentas were significantly associated with T21 and its complications including mental retardation and neurobehavioral manifestations, whereas down-regulated genes were significantly associated with diseases, such as cystitis, metaplasia, pathologic neovascularization, airway obstruction, and diabetes mellitus. The interactive signaling network showed that 53 genes (40 up-regulated genes and 13 downregulated genes) were an essential component of the dynamic complex of signaling (P < 1.39e-08). Conclusions: Our findings provide a broad overview of whole human genome expression in the placentas of fetuses with T21 and a possibility that these genes regulate biological pathways that have been involved in T21 and T21 complications. Porcine parvovirus (PPV) is one of the main causes of porcine reproductive failure. It is important for swine industries to understand the recent trends in PPV evolution. Previous data show that PPV has two genetic lineages originating in Germany. In this study, two more genetic lineages were defined, one of which was distinctly Asian. Additionally, amino acid substitutions in European strains and Asian strains showed distinct differences in several regions of the VP2 gene. The VP1 gene of the recent PPV isolate (T142_South Korea) was identical to that of Kresse strain isolated in the USA in 1985, indicating that modern PPV strains now resemble the original strains (Kresse and NADL-2). The genome of Leuconostoc suionicum DSM 20241T (=ATCC 9135T = LMG 8159T = NCIMB 6992T) was completely sequenced and its fermentative metabolic pathways were reconstructed to investigate the fermentative properties and metabolites of strain DSM 20241T during fermentation. The genome of L. suionicum DSM 20241T consists of a circular chromosome (2026.8 Kb) and a circular plasmid (21.9 Kb) with 37.58% G + C content, encoding 997 proteins, 12 rRNAs, and 72 tRNAs. Analysis of the metabolic pathways of L. suionicum DSM 20241T revealed that strain DSM 20241T performs heterolactic acid fermentation and can metabolize diverse organic compounds including glucose, fructose, galactose, cellobiose, mannose, sucrose, trehalose, arbutin, salcin, xylose, arabinose and ribose. Background: This randomized, double-blind, multi-center, non-inferiority trial was conducted to assess the efficacy and safety of a cross-linked hyaluronate (XLHA, single injection form) compared with a linear high molecular hyaluronate (HMWHA, thrice injection form) in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis.Methods: Two hundred eighty seven patients with osteoarthritis (Kellgren-Lawrence grade I to III) were randomized to each group. Three weekly injections were given in both groups but two times of saline injections preceded XLHA injection to maintain double-blindness. Primary endpoint was the change of weight-bearing pain (WBP) at 12 weeks after the last injection. Secondary endpoints included Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis index; patient's and investigator's global assessment; pain at rest, at night, or in motion; OMERACT-OARSI responder rate; proportion of patients achieving at least 20 mm or 40% decrease in WBP; and rate of rescue medicine use and its total consumption.Results: Mean changes of WBP at 12 weeks after the last injection were -33.3 mm with XLHA and -29.2 mm with HMWHA, proving non-inferiority of XLHA to HMWHA as the lower bound of 95% CI (-1.9 mm, 10.1 mm) was well above the predefined margin (-10 mm). There were no significant between-group differences in all secondary endpoints. Injection site pain was the most common adverse event and no remarkable safety issue was identified.Conclusions: This study demonstrated that a single injection of XLHA was non-inferior to three weekly injections of HMWHA in terms of WBP reduction, and supports XLHA as an effective and safe treatment for knee osteoarthritis.Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov ( NCT01510535 ). Background: Pre-procedural lumbar ultrasound scanning is a reliable tool to estimate the skin to epidural distance (SED). We conducted an observational study to compare the SED between the sitting position and lateral position using pre-procedural ultrasound imaging of the lumbar spine in parturients. Methods: Using a 2-5 MHz curvilinear transducer, we obtained images of the lumbar interspaces from L2-3 to L5-S1 in the paramedian sagittal oblique view. The individual distance from the skin to the ligamentum flavum-dura mater unit was measured at the level of L2-3, L3-4, L4-5, and L5-S1 in the left lateral position (distance in lateral position; D-lat). Subsequently, participants were placed in the sitting position, and the distance was measured in the same manner (distance in sitting position; D-sit). Data were grouped according to body mass index (BMI; kg/m2) measurements of ≥ 25 or ＜ 25 and analyzed. The primary outcome was the change determined by ultrasound between D-lat and D-sit at the same lumbar level according to position. Results: Thirty parturients were studied. The difference between D-lat and D-sit in the same lumbar level was not statistically significant. The mean changes between D-lat and D-sit in the same lumbar level were less than 0.18 cm. In BMI ≥ 25 group, the difference between D-lat and D-sit were greater than that of BMI ＜ 25 group at L3-4 level (P = 0.042). Conclusions: It is important for clinicians to consider that position change is associated with greater differences in SED in obese parturients (BMI ≥ 25) compared with thin parturients (BMI ＜ 25). Polycaprolactone (PCL) is a biodegradable polyester that is bioresorbable and biocompatible, and is widely used in medical fields. This study examines in vitro and in vivo osteogenic activities of cultured human periosteum-derived osteoblasts (POs) seeded into growth factor (bone morphogenic protein 2 [BMP-2] or vascular endothelial growth factor [VEGF])-releasing scaffolds of PCL beads coated with Pluronic F127. Each growth factor immobilized in the PCL/F127 is cumulatively released from the beads for more than 40 days (up to 3.04 ± 0.08 ng mg−1 BMP-2 and 3.41 ± 0.18 ng mg−1 VEGF in 42 days). Long-term (∼2 years) experimental results obtained in a miniature pig model suggest that POs seeded into BMP-2 + VEGF-releasing PCL/P-F127 beads are the most effective for bone repair. In in vitro assays, osteogenic activities were higher in POs seeded into BMP-2-releasing PCL/Pluronic F127 beads at earlier time points and in POs seeded into BMP-2 + VEGF-releasing PCL/Pluronic F127 beads at later time points. These results suggest that the combination of BMP-2 and VEGF more sufficiently stimulates (in particular at late time points) osteoblast differentiation of POs seeded in the PCL/F127 in vitro and in vivo, and thus allows effective bone regeneration. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two dogs presented with vomiting and head pressing. In both dogs, a large vessel was revealed in computed tomography (CT) angiography, which was found to leave the portal vein (PV) cranial to the splenomesenteric confluence and enter the pre-hepatic caudal vena cava cranial to the right renal vein. The flow of portal blood to the liver was not identified. Based on CT angiography, the dogs were suspected to have congenital PV aplasia with portocaval shunting.
