This multi-center point prevalence study evaluated children who were diagnosed as having coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). On February 2nd, 2022, inpatients and outpatients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) were included in the study from 12 cities and 24 centers in Turkey. Of 8605 patients on February 2nd, 2022, in participating centers, 706 (8.2%) had COVID-19. The median age of the 706 patients was 92.50 months, 53.4% were female, and 76.7% were inpatients. The three most common symptoms of the patients with COVID-19 were fever (56.6%), cough (41.3%), and fatigue (27.5%). The three most common underlying chronic diseases (UCDs) were asthma (3.4%), neurologic disorders (3.3%), and obesity (2.6%). The SARS-CoV-2-related pneumoniae rate was 10.7%. The COVID-19 vaccination rate was 12.5% in all patients. Among patients aged over 12 years with access to the vaccine given by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Health, the vaccination rate was 38.7%. Patients with UCDs presented with dyspnea and pneumoniae more frequently than those without UCDs (p < 0.001 for both). The rates of fever, diarrhea, and pneumoniae were higher in patients without COVID-19 vaccinations (p = 0.001, p = 0.012, and p = 0.027). Conclusion: To lessen the effects of the disease, all eligible children should receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The illness may specifically endanger children with UCDs. What is New: • Children with obesity have a higher vaccination rate against COVID-19 than children without obesity. • Among unvaccinated children, fever and pneumoniae might be seen at a higher ratio than among vaccinated children. Objective: Asthma is the most common chronic disease of childhood, and magnesium is one of the most frequently found minerals in human body and it is used in the treatment of asthma. Although there are studies on magnesium levels in adult patients with asthma, there is yet no data on the levels of magnesium in children. The present study compared the levels of serum magnesium between the children with asthma and healthy children. Methods: Children aged between 5 and 17 years with mild-moderate persistent asthma, who were admitted to our hospital between January 2009 and August 2010, were included in the study. Serum magnesium levels were measured in 50 patients with acute asthma attack, in 50 patients receiving treatment for stable asthma, and in 50 children admitted to the hospital for any reason and matched with asthma patients except for the diagnosis of asthma. The test was performed by photometric method using Roche-Hitachi Modular P biochemistry analyzer. The normal range of serum Mg was considered to be 1.59-to-2.10 mg/dL and p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: All three groups were similar in terms of mean age and gender distribution. Although mean serum magnesium levels were within the normal range in healthy children and in children treated for stable asthma (1.89±0.32 and 1.93±0.34 mg/dL respectively), it was 1.62±0.26 mg/dL in children having an asthma attack, which was within the normal range but close to the lower limit (p<0.001). Conclusion: Although its efficacy has not been definitely proven, magnesium is used either via intravenous route or as inhaler in acute asthma attack. Knowledge about the changes in body magnesium levels of asthma patients would be a guide for revealing the role of magnesium in the treatment of asthma. The efficacy of Quantiferon-TB gold test (QFT-GIT) remains to be documented in pediatric population. Tuberculin skin test (TST) is a conventional test available for the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). We aimed to investigate the concordance between QFT-GIT and TST in children with and without tuberculosis infection. Ninety-seven patients, aged 3 months-14 years, admitted to pediatric outpatient clinics of Dr. Sadi Konuk Training Hospital Bakırköy, Turkey between March 2008 and April 2009 were recruited. Demographic features, TST results, history of exposure to active tuberculosis (TB), chest X-ray findings, clinical history, presence of Bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) vaccination scar were recorded. Patients were categorized into four groups namely, active TB, LTBI, no TB and healthy. It was found that BCG scar positivity did not influence QFT-GIT results. There was a statistically significant agreement between QFT-GIT and TST results ( κ = 0.486; p < 0.01). In patients ≥5 years of age, TST positivity and QFT positivity had a significant relationship ( p < 0.01). In all patient groups, sensitivity and specificity was 65.85 % and 82.14 %, respectively. In active TB group, TST and QFT-GIT results demonstrated significant agreement ratio of 40.8 % ( κ = 0.364; p < 0.01). Sensitivity and specificity was 100 % and 30 %, respectively. Utilization of QFT-GIT in the diagnosis of LTBI reduces false-positive results and prevents unnecessary treatment with INH and its adverse effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Leptospirosis is a zoonotic infectious disease caused by pathogenic spirochetes of the genus Leptospira. Although it is usually asymptomatic and self-limited, severe potentially fatal illness accompanied by multi-organ failure may occur. Case Report: Here we report an unusual case of severe leptospirosis successfully treated with continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVHF) and therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE). The patient presented with pericardial tamponade, renal failure and macrophage activation syndrome, and later suffered prolonged jaundice and sclerosing cholangitis during hospitalization in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). To the best of our knowledge, sclerosing cholangitis due to leptospirosis has not been reported in the literature. Conclusion: Leptospirosis should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of sepsis and septic shock with fever, thrombocytopenia, jaundice and renal failure. The article discusses the study on the clinical characteristics and cost of burden of children with influenza A H1N1 who were admitted to tertiary care hospitals in Istanbul, Turkey in 2009. The study reportedly involved an examination of the medical records of children suspected with pandemic H1N1 influenza. The results reportedly revealed that pandemic influenza is linked with a significant cost of burden due to hospitalization.

The article presents a case study of a two months old boy who suffered from kawasaki disease (KD). It is reported that, the doctors at first mis-interprated the symptoms of fever, diarrhea, and vomiting as those of meningitis. It is reported that, after proper evaluation KD was diagnosed and the boy was given a high-dose intravenous gammaglobulin (IVIG) and aspirin after which fever subsided.
