The goal of this study was to evaluate the age-differentiated health risks associated with exposure to mercury in drinking water from artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sites on nearby communities in Yolombo, Colombia. In 2017, nine samples were collected from a local regulatory agency to report mercury concentrations in locations near mining sites. We performed a risk assessment to find 100% of the water samples collected downstream of mining sites exceed Hazard Quotient (HQ) risk thresholds (set by the US-Environmental Protection Agency and Health Canada). HQ model, coupled with global sensitivity and uncertainty analysis (GSUA), was used to conclude infants as the most vulnerable, with 50% of the population exceeding HQ thresholds. Length of exposure was the most significant input that contributed to risk variance, explaining 30-55% of risk across all age groups. Monte-Carlo filtering was used to identify effective strategies to reduce the number of individuals exceeding allowable HQ thresholds. After Monte-Carlo filtering intervention strategies, all individuals are below HQ thresholds. This work shows the importance of combining risk assessment tools with sensor data to inform the need for filters, stakeholder education, and alternative mining approaches to gain a multi-perspective risk approach. This work provides a valuable risk and decision modeling methodology and baseline information to gain a deeper understanding of the probability of experiencing detrimental health effects from water contamination in ASGM communities. Background: Calprotectin is a well-established marker for intestinal inflammation, mainly in inflammatory bowel disease, and represents one of the most studied biomarkers in stool samples. Methods: Apart from its important diagnostic role in inflammatory bowel disease, there are few studies showing that calprotectin can also be used as a diagnostic tool in patients suffering from hepatic encephalopathy (HE) and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) in cirrhosis. Results: Since calprotectin concentration in the human stool or in ascites is elevated at an early stage of inflammation, it might serve as an early screening tool for patients suffering from cirrhosis who are at risk to develop these conditions. As detection and monitoring of HE and SBP may be unclear and resource-intensive, identification of valid new markers of disease activity is necessary. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge of calprotectin as a diagnostic biomarker in cirrhosis, indicating that it is a highly promising diagnostic surrogate marker to screen for the presence of HE and SBP. Conclusions: To screen cirrhotic patients for SBP, calprotectin should be assessed in ascitic fluid while it should be measured in feces when screening for HE. Purpose: In the era of biological therapy of ulcerative colitis (UC), surgical treatment frequently consists of colectomy, end ileostomy, and rectal stump closure before patients go on towards restorative proctocolectomy. We aimed to evaluate possible risk factors for the occurrence of postoperative complications and investigate those after initial colectomy in these patients. Methods: Retrospective analysis of 180 patients (76 female, 104 male) undergoing colectomy for UC with formation of a rectal stump and terminal ileostomy between March 2008 and March 2018 at Charité University Hospital Berlin, Campus Benjamin Franklin. A panel of possible postoperative complications was established, patient history was screened, and postoperative complications were analyzed using the Clavien Dindo Classification. Results: Postoperative complication rate was 27.7%. Mortality was 0.5%. Postoperative ileus occurred in 15.3% and rectal stump leakage in 14.8%. Complications were categorized as Clavien Dindo 3 in 80%. Risk factors for surgical complications after multivariate analysis were ASA classification (p = 0.004), preoperative anemia (Hemoglobin < 8 mg/dl) (p = 0.025), use of immunosuppressants (p = 0.003), more than two cardiovascular diseases (p = 0.016), and peritonitis (p = 0.000). Reoperation rate of patients with surgical complications was 27.7%. Conclusion: Colectomy in high-risk UC patients is associated with significant morbidity. However, most of the surgical complications can be treated conservatively. Overall mortality is low. Patient-related risk factors are associated with postoperative complications. Optimizing these risk factors or earlier indication for surgery in the course of UC may help to reduce morbidity of this procedure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (10[sup -1]Hz to 10[sup 6] Hz) is employed to study the molecular dynamics of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS, M[sub w] = 1.7 × 10[sup 5] g mol[sup -1] and M[sub w] = 9.6 × 10[sup 4] g mol[sup -1]) as grafted films with thicknesses d below and above the radius of gyration R[sub g]. For the thinnest films the molecular dynamics becomes faster by up to two orders of magnitude with respect to the bulk resulting in a pronounced decrease of the Vogel temperature TO and hence the calorimetric glass transition temperature T[sub g]. For films with d= 41 nm>R[sub g] the molecular dynamics is comparable to that of the bulk melt. The results are interpreted in terms of a chain confinement effect and compared with findings for low molecular weight glass forming liquids contained in nanoporous materials. We investigate the deuteration of methanol towards the high-mass star-forming region NGC 7538-IRS1. We carried out a multi-transition study of CH3OH, 13CH3OH, and the deuterated flavors, CH2DOH and CH3OD, between 1.0 and 1.4 mm with the IRAM-30 m antenna. In total, 34 13CH3OH, 13 CH2DOH lines and 20 CH3OD lines spanning a wide range of upper-state energies (Eup) were detected. From the detected transitions, we estimate that the measured D/H does not exceed 1%, with a measured CH2DOH/CH3OH and CH3OD/CH3OH of about (32 ± 8) × 10−4 and (10 ± 4) × 10−4, respectively. This finding is consistent with the hypothesis of a short-timescale formation during the pre-stellar phase. We find a relative abundance CH2DOH/CH3OD ratio of 3.2 ± 1.5. This result is consistent with a statistical deuteration. We cannot exclude H/D exchanges between water and methanol if water deuteration is of the order 0.1%, as suggested by recent Herschel observations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Neoproterozoic geotectonic triad of the Brasiliano Orogen is reconstructed in southern Brazil from studies focused on the Porongos fold and thrust belt. We integrate field geology with isotopic studies of zircon U–Pb SHRIMP and Lu–Hf–O laser determinations in seven metasedimentary and three metavolcanic rock samples. The results indicate that the Porongos palaeo-basin was derived from mixed sources (3200–550 Ma), with major contributions from Rhyacian (2170 Ma) and Ediacaran (608 Ma) sources. Minor contributions from Archaean to Tonian sources are also registered. The maximum depositional age of the Porongos palaeo-basin is established by the age range of 650–550 Ma withTDMmodel ages between 2.5 and 1.3 Ga. The reworked signature (εHfvalues = −34 to −4) and the characteristic crustal magma reservoirs (δ18O ≥5.3 ‰) indicate that these sediments are equivalent to Neoproterozoic granites of the Dom Feliciano Belt. The episodic depositional history started in the Cryogenian (650 Ma) and lasted until the Ediacaran (most likely 570 Ma). A magmatic event of Tonian age is recorded in rhyodacite samples interleaved with the metasedimentary rocks and dated at 773, 801, and 809 Ma. The crustal evolution of the Sul-Riograndense Shield included mountain building, folding and thrusting and flexural subsidence in the foreland. An orogenic triad is revealed as the Pelotas Batholith, the Porongos fold and thrust belt and the Camaquã Basin, all part of the Dom Feliciano Belt. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Linking covalently both electron donor and acceptor components is an efficient way to gain thermodynamic control over the formation of well-ordered heterojunction materials suitable for organic photovoltaics. In this context, we attached flexible polymer segments to the termini of a (perylene bisimide)–quaterthiophene–(perylene bisimide) triad. The microphase segregation of the resulting coil-rod-coil architecture served to reliably promote the formation of lamellar phases. The lamellae were oriented vertically relative to the substrate, and they could be laterally aligned by mechanical rubbing, as determined by small and wide angle X-ray scattering, transmission electron microscopy, electron diffraction and AFM. Transient absorption spectroscopy revealed that light absorption was followed by charge separation and that charge recombination was slower in thin films than for solution-phase samples, especially when longer side chains were used. Thus, this study is a first step towards reliable lamellar phase segregation in donor–acceptor materials on the route towards improved materials for organic photovoltaics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background The folate receptor alpha is selectively over-expressed in a number of human cancers. BMS-753493 is a folate conjugate of the epothilone analog BMS-748285 that was designed to selectively target folate receptor expressing cancer cells. Methods BMS-753493 was investigated in two parallel multi-institutional first-in-human phase I/IIa studies in patients with advanced solid tumors. In Study 1, patients were treated on a schedule of once daily dosing of BMS-753493 administered on Days 1, 4, 8 and 11 every 21 days with a starting dose of 5 mg daily and in Study 2, patients were treated once daily on Days 1-4 every 21 days, with a starting dose of 2.5 mg daily. Results A total of 65 patients were treated across the two studies. The maximum tolerated dose (MTD) was 26 mg in Study 1 and 15 mg in Study 2. Fatigue, transaminitis, gastrointestinal toxicity, and mucositis were dose-limiting toxicities. One patient in Study 2 developed Stevens-Johnson syndrome attributed to BMS-753493. Plasma exposures of both the conjugated and free epothilone increased in a dose related fashion in both studies and the half-life of the conjugated epothilone was 0.2-0.6 h across dose levels. No objective tumor responses were seen in either study. Conclusions BMS-753493 was generally tolerable and toxicities known to be associated with epothilone class of anticancer agents were common, although peripheral neuropathy and neutropenia appear to have been less frequent and less severe as compared to epothilones. Human rights and health care under apartheid in South Africa were studied. Human rights violations, such as detention without charge or trial, assault and torture in police custody, and restriction orders, have had devastating effects on the health of persons experiencing them. These violations have occurred in the context of a deliberate policy of discriminatory health care favoring the white minority over the black majority. South Africa's medical societies have had mixed responses to the health problems raised by human rights violations and inequities in the health care system. The amelioration of health care for all and prevention of human rights violations depend on ending apartheid and discrimination and greater government attention to these problems. A comparison of accretion and (turbulent) magnetic diffusion time-scales for sheets and filaments demonstrates that dense star-forming clouds generally will – under realistic conditions – become supercritical due to mass accretion on time-scales at least an order of magnitude shorter than ambipolar and/or turbulent diffusion time-scales. The dust sublimation walls of disks around T Tauri stars represent a directly observable cross-section through the disk atmosphere and midplane. Their emission properties can probe the grain size distribution and composition of the innermost regions of the disk, where terrestrial planets form. Here we calculate the inner dust sublimation wall properties for four classical T Tauri stars with a narrow range of spectral types and inclination angles and a wide range of mass accretion rates to determine the extent to which the walls are radially curved. Best fits to the near- and mid-IR excesses are found for curved, two-layer walls in which the lower layer contains larger, hotter, amorphous pyroxene grains with Mg/(Mg+Fe) = 0.6 and the upper layer contains submicron, cooler, mixed amorphous olivine and forsterite grains. As the mass accretion rates decrease from 10–8 to 10–10M☼ yr–1, the maximum grain size in the lower layer decreases from ∼3 to 0.5 μm. We attribute this to a decrease in fragmentation and turbulent support for micron-sized grains with decreasing viscous heating. The atmosphere of these disks is depleted of dust with dust-gas mass ratios 1 × 10–4 of the interstellar medium (ISM) value, while the midplane is enhanced to eight times the ISM value. For all accretion rates, the wall contributes at least half of the flux in the optically thin 10 μm silicate feature. Finally, we find evidence for an iron gradient in the disk, suggestive of that found in our solar system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The capability of determining the flow-by-flow stratigraphy and the long-distance correlation of lava flows in large continental volcanic provinces leads to a considerable advance in the understanding of processes related to generation and evolution of the lavas. The Paraná volcanic province is exposed along the Serra Geral cuesta of southern Brazil in a steeply inclined, 1,000-m-high section starting 40-m above sea level. Each of the 10-20 pahoehoe flows and rhyodacite flow units has a unique chemical composition. Integrated with field stratigraphy and gamma-spectrometric measurements, this leads to the establishment of the correct stratigraphic sequence in each of three different vertical sections. The number of flows integrating the three serras is 26 ('serra' is a mountain range in Portuguese). Each serra has basaltic andesites at the base, whereas rhyodacites are intercalated with basaltic andesites at the top. Three basaltic andesite flows and one rhyodacite flow unit are correlated between Serra Umbu and Serra Boa Vista (10 km). In the Serra Faxinal, a thick (170 m) sill at the base correlates with flow 13F, whereas a dike-sill in the Graxaim quarry (24 km distance) correlates with flow 3F. One basaltic andesite and two rhyodacite flow units correlate between Serra Faxinal and Serra Umbu (50 km). The results are most significant for the understanding of large tracts of continental volcanic provinces with use of common geochemical and gamma-spectrometric techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using NASA Infrared Telescope Facility SpeX data from 0.8 to 4.5µm, we determine self-consistently the stellar properties and excess emission above the photosphere for a sample of classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) in the Taurus molecular cloud with varying degrees of accretion. This process uses a combination of techniques from the recent literature as well as observations of weak-line T Tauri stars to account for the differences in surface gravity and chromospheric activity between the T Tauri stars and dwarfs, which are typically used as photospheric templates for CTTS. Our improved veiling and extinction estimates for our targets allow us to extract flux-calibrated spectra of the excess in the near-infrared.We find that we are able to produce an acceptable parametric fit to the near-infrared excesses using a combination of up to three blackbodies. In half of our sample, two blackbodies at temperatures of 8000 K and 1600 K suffice. These temperatures and the corresponding solid angles are consistent with emission from the accretion shock on the stellar surface and the inner dust sublimation rim of the disk, respectively. In contrast, the other half requires three blackbodies at 8000, 1800, and 800 K, to describe the excess. We interpret the combined two cooler blackbodies as the dust sublimation wall with either a contribution from the disk surface beyond the wall or curvature of the wall itself, neither of which should have single-temperature blackbody emission. Hydrogels based on nanocomposites of statistical poly(hydroxyethyl acrylate- co-ethyl acrylate) and silica, prepared by simultaneous copolymerization and generation of silica nanoparticles by sol-gel process at various copolymer compositions and silica contents, characterized by a fine dispersion of filler, were investigated with respect to glass transition and polymer dynamics by dielectric techniques. These include thermally stimulated depolarization currents and dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, covering together broad ranges of frequency and temperature. In addition, equilibrium water sorption isotherms were recorded at room temperature (25 °C). Special attention was paid to the investigation of effects of silica on glass transition, polymer dynamics (secondary γ and β relaxations and segmental α relaxation), and electrical conductivity in the dry systems (xerogels) and in the hydrogels at various levels of relative humidity/water content. An overall reduction of molecular mobility is observed in the nanocomposite xerogels, in particular at high silica contents. Analysis of the results and comparison with previous work on similar systems enable to discuss this reduction of molecular mobility in terms of constraints to polymeric motion imposed by interfacial polymer-filler interactions and by the formation of a continuous silica network interpenetrated with the polymer network at filler contents higher than about 15 wt%. In this article, we study the Reidemeister torsion and the analytic torsion of the m dimensional disc, with the Ray and Singer homology basis (Adv Math 7:145-210, ). We prove that the Reidemeister torsion coincides with a power of the volume of the disc. We study the additional terms arising in the analytic torsion due to the boundary, using generalizations of the Cheeger-Müller theorem. We use a formula proved by Brüning and Ma (GAFA 16:767-873, ) that predicts a new anomaly boundary term beside the known term proportional to the Euler characteristic of the boundary (Lück, J Diff Geom 37:263-322, ). Some of our results extend to the case of the cone over a sphere, in particular we evaluate directly the analytic torsion for a cone over the circle and over the two sphere. We compare the results obtained in the low dimensional cases. We also consider a different formula for the boundary term given by Dai and Fang (Asian J Math 4:695-714, ), and we compare the results. Numerical modelling by finite element methods provides two significant insights into the formation of the giant amethyst geodes of the Paraná volcanic province: the conditions needed to open the cavities and the conditions that control their size and shape. Giant amethyst geodes were formed in the Cretaceous (135 Ma) in altered volcanic rocks by water vapour pressure (Δp) at about 0.5 MPa under an altered basalt cover of 5-20 m. Only rocks with Young's modulus values (E) in the range 1-2 GPa can sustain ballooning, which is the growth of a cavity in a ductile medium by the pressure of water and its vapour. The size of the proto-geode is dependent on the water vapour pressure, which is directly related to thickness of the overlying basalt. Varying the yield points causes the formation of either prolate or oblate cavities. A low transition point (smaller than 0.18 MPa) generates a prolate-shaped cavity, whereas a high transition point (larger than 0.18 MPa) generates oblate proto-geodes. Proto-geodes are smaller when Young's modulus is higher (rock is less altered) or when water vapour pressure is lower (because of thinner overburden of basalt). The calculations are an indication that the processes operative in the altered basalts led to the opening of giant cavities by ballooning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A catalogue of molecular aberrations that cause ovarian cancer is critical for developing and deploying therapies that will improve patients' lives. The Cancer Genome Atlas project has analysed messenger RNA expression, microRNA expression, promoter methylation and DNA copy number in 489 high-grade serous ovarian adenocarcinomas and the DNA sequences of exons from coding genes in 316 of these tumours. Here we report that high-grade serous ovarian cancer is characterized by TP53 mutations in almost all tumours (96%); low prevalence but statistically recurrent somatic mutations in nine further genes including NF1, BRCA1, BRCA2, RB1 and CDK12; 113 significant focal DNA copy number aberrations; and promoter methylation events involving 168 genes. Analyses delineated four ovarian cancer transcriptional subtypes, three microRNA subtypes, four promoter methylation subtypes and a transcriptional signature associated with survival duration, and shed new light on the impact that tumours with BRCA1/2 (BRCA1 or BRCA2) and CCNE1 aberrations have on survival. Pathway analyses suggested that homologous recombination is defective in about half of the tumours analysed, and that NOTCH and FOXM1 signalling are involved in serous ovarian cancer pathophysiology. The Neoproterozoic-Eoplalaeozoic Brasiliano orogeny at the eastern margin of the Rio de la Plata craton in southernmost Brazil and Uruguay comprises a complex tectonic history over 300 million years. The southern Brazilian Shield consists of a number of tectono-stratigraphic units and terranes. The São Gabriel block in the west is characterized by c.760-690 Ma supracrustal rocks and calc-alkaline orthogneisses including relics of older, c. 880 Ma old igneous rocks. Both igneous and metasedimentary rocks have positive ε Nd(t) values and Neoproterozoic TDM model ages; they formed in magmatic arc settings with only minor input of older crustal sources. A trondhjemite from the São Gabriel block intruding dioritc and tonalitic gneisses during the late stages of deformation (D) yield an U-Pb zircon age (LA-ICP-MS) of 701 ± 10 Ma giving the approximate minimum age of the São Gabriel accretionary event. The Encantadas block further east, containing the supracrustal Porongos belt and the Pelotas batholith, is in contrast characterized by reworking of Neoarchean to Palaeoproterozoic crust. The 789 ± 7 Ma zircon age of a metarhyolite intercalated with the metasedimentary succession of the Porongos belt provides a time marker for the basin formation. Zircons of a sample from tonalitic gneisses, constituting the Palaeoproterozoic basement of the Porongos belt, form a cluster at 2,234 ± 28 Ma, interpreted as the tonalite crystallization age. Zircon rims show ages of 2,100-2,000 Ma interpreted as related to a Palaeoproterozoic metamorphic event. The Porongos basin formed on thinned continental crust in an extensional or transtensional regime between c. 800-700 Ma. The absence of input from Neoproterozoic juvenile sources into the Porongos basin strongly indicates that the Encantadas and São Gabriel blocks were separated terranes that became juxtaposed next to each other during the Brasiliano accretional events. The tectonic evolution comprises two episodes of magmatic arc accretion to the eastern margin of the Rio de la Plata craton, (i) accretion of an intra-oceanic arc at c. 880 Ma (Passinho event) and (ii) accretion of the 760-700 Ma Cambaí/Vila Nova magmatic arc (São Gabriel event). The latter event also includes the collision of the Encantadas block with the Rio de la Plata craton to the west. Collision and crustal thickening was followed by sinistral shear along SW-NE-trending orogen-parallel crustal-scale shear zones that can be traced from southern Brazil to Uruguay and have been active between 660 and 590 Ma. Voluminous granitic magmatism in the Pelotas batholith spatially related to shear zones is interpreted as late- to post-orogenic magmatism, possibly assisted by lithospheric delamination. It marks the transition to the post-orogenic molasse stage. Localized deformation by reactivation of preexisting shear zones continued until c. 530 Ma and can be assigned to final stages of the amalgamation of West Gondwana. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We designed a phase I clinical trial of escalating doses of topotecan with CY and carboplatin in combination with autologous hematopoietic SCT (AHSCT) for the treatment of relapsed or persistent platinum sensitive ovarian or primary peritoneal carcinoma. After stem cell collection, 16 patients received topotecan at 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5 or 6.0 mg/m2/d combined with CY 1.5 g/m2/d and carboplatin 200 mg/m2/d, all by 4-day continuous infusion. Steady state pharmacokinetics of topotecan and carboplatin were examined. Pre-treatment biopsies were examined for the expression of topoisomerase (topo) I, Ki67 and Bcl-2 family members by immunohistochemistry. One of six patients at a topotecan dose of 4.5 mg/m2/d and two of three patients at 6.0 mg/m2/d had dose-limiting toxicity of grade 3 stomatitis lasting >2 weeks. There was no treatment-related mortality. As topotecan clearance was constant over the dose range examined, topotecan steady state plasma concentrations increased with dose. Median progression-free survival and overall survival were 6.5 months and 2.7 years, respectively. Shorter progression-free survival was observed in tumors with low topo expression (P=0.04). The methylated antimony and arsenic species content of sediments derived from a sedimentation bowl of the river Ruhr were monitored over a 12 month period. The most prevalent species detected were monomethylarsenic (MMAs) and monomethy- 5 lantimony (MMSb). The methylantimony and methylarsenic species concentration was found to be directly correlated to the winter spate. As the biological activity in the water body is generally low at this time of the year, it may be concluded that the concentration maxima in winter originated from the translocation of soil- and sediment particles to the river by heavy rains and the melting of snow. A second maximum in 10 Spring/early Summer was observed for the methylarsenic species, and specifically the dimethylarsenic species (DMAs); this occurred in parallel to the algal bloom. A change in the methylarsenic speciation pattern was observed between April, May and June, with DMAs replacing MMAs as the dominant methylarsenic species. For methylated antimony species no seasonal variation in the species pattern was detected. Taken together these data strongly indicate a higher degree of transformation of arsenic compared to antimony in the Ruhr river system in spring and can be taken as a record for a biogeochemical different behaviour of these two elements which are often treated as equivalent in environmental studies. There is evidence that progesterone plays a role in the aetiology of invasive epithelial ovarian cancer. Therefore, genes involved in pathways that regulate progesterone may be candidates for susceptibility to this disease. Previous studies have suggested that genetic variants in the progesterone receptor gene (PGR) may be associated with ovarian cancer risk, although results have been inconsistent. We have established an international consortium to pool resources and data from many ovarian cancer case-control studies in an effort to identify variants that influence risk. In this study, three PGR single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), for which previous data have suggested they affect ovarian cancer risk, were examined. These were +331 C/T (rs10895068), PROGINS (rs1042838), and a 3' variant (rs608995). A total of 4788 ovarian cancer cases and 7614 controls from 12 case-control studies were included in this analysis. Unconditional logistic regression was used to model the association between each SNP and ovarian cancer risk and two-sided P-values are reported. Overall, risk of ovarian cancer was not associated with any of the three variants studied. However, in histopathological subtype analyses, we found a statistically significant association between risk of endometrioid ovarian cancer and the PROGINS allele (n=651, OR=1.17, 95% CI=1.01-1.36, P=0.036). We also observed borderline evidence of an association between risk of endometrioid ovarian cancer and the +331C/T variant (n=725 cases; OR=0.80, 95% CI 0.62-1.04, P=0.100). These data suggest that while these three variants in the PGR are not associated with ovarian cancer overall, the PROGINS variant may play a modest role in risk of endometrioid ovarian cancer. We study the dynamics of entanglement in spin gases. A spin gas consists of a (large) number of interacting particles whose random motion is described classically while their internal degrees of freedom are described quantum-mechanically. We determine the entanglement that occurs naturally in such systems for specific types of quantum interactions. At the same time, these systems provide microscopic models for non–Markovian decoherence: the interaction of a group of particles with other particles belonging to a background gas are treated exactly, and differences between collective and non–collective decoherence processes are studied. We give quantitative results for the Boltzmann gas and also for a lattice gas, which could be realized by neutral atoms hopping in an optical lattice. Quantum mechanical entanglement can exist in noisy open quantum systems at high temperature. A simple mechanism, where system particles are randomly reset to some standard initial state, can counteract the deteriorating effect of decoherence, resulting in an entangled steady state far from thermodynamical equilibrium. We present models for both gas-type systems and for strongly coupled systems. We point out in which way the entanglement resulting from such a reset mechanism is different from the entanglement that one can find in thermal states. We develop master equations to describe the system and its interaction with an environment, study toy models with two particles (qubits), where the master equation can often be solved analytically, and finally examine larger systems with possibly fluctuating particle numbers. We find that in gas-type systems, the reset mechanism can produce an entangled steady state for an arbitrary temperature of the environment, while this is not true in strongly coupled systems. But even then the temperature range where one can find entangled steady states is typically much higher with the reset mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The SW--NE-striking Porongos belt, located between juvenile Neoproterozoic rocks in the west and the Dora Feliciano belt, characterized by intense reworking of older crust, in the east. comprises a greenschist to amphibolite-facies metavolcano-metasedimentary succession (Porongos sequence) of unknown age with some exposures of Palaeoproterozoic gneisses (Encantadas gneisses). High-temperature ductile deformation of the basement gneisses comprises at least two magmatic events followed by three deformational phases including folding and shearing (DT1-DT3) and can be attributed to the Palaeoproterozoic Trans-Amazonian orogeny. The deformation of the Porongos sequence occurred during the Neoprnterozoic Brasiliano orogeny and comprises four ductile deformation phases (DB1-DB4), including two phases of isoclinal folding associated with shearing recorded in mylonitic layers, followed by closed NW-vergent folding and thrusting leading to formation of a thrust stack. Uplift of the basement and formation of late tectonic sedimentary basins occurred as a result of semi-ductile to brittle block faulting in a sinistral strike-slip regime. The Porongos sequence can be subdivided into a southeastern and a northwestern part. Trace element analyses as well as Sm--Nd and Rb--Sr geochemical data indicate partial melting and significant contamination by old continental crust for the metavolcanic rocks. The metavolcanic rocks show εNd(t = 780 Ma) values of 20.64 and -21.72 (northwestern units) and -6.87 (southeastern sequence). The metasedimentary rocks were derived from late Palaeoproterozoic to Archaean sources, and the data indicate different sources for the northwestern and southeastern rock units of the Porongos sequence. εNd(t = 780 Ma) are -6.25 and 6.85 in the southeastern units, with TDM model ages between 1734 and 1954 Ma, and vary between -14.72 and -17.96 in the northwestern parts, which have TDM model ages between 2346 and 2710 Ma. High 87Sr/86Sr(t) values between 0.7064 and 0.7286 confirm reworking of older crust. Isotopic signatures of the Porongos sequence do not show indications for a significant contribution from a Neoproterozoic juvenile source. A passive margin or continental rift environment is suggested for the tectonic setting of the Porongos belt, which is compatible with both deposition of shallow marine to deep marine sediments and stretching of continental crust leading to volcanism which is characterized by significant contamination by old continental crust. Association of Shal gene-related voltage-gated potassium (Kv4) channels with cytoplasmic Kv channel interacting proteins (KChIPs) influences inactivation gating and surface expression. We investigated both functional and biochemical consequences of mutations in cytoplasmic N and C-terminal Kv4.2 domains to characterize structural determinants for KChIP interaction. We performed a lysine-scanning mutagenesis within the proximal 40 amino acid portion and a structure-based mutagenesis in the tetramerization 1 (T1) domain of Kv4.2. In addition, the cytoplasmic Kv4.2 C-terminus was truncated at various positions. Wild-type and mutant Kv4.2 channels were coexpressed with KChIP2 isoforms in mammalian cell lines. The KChIP2-induced modulation of Kv4.2 currents was studied with whole-cell patch clamp and the binding of KChIP2 isoforms to Kv4.2 channels with coimmunoprecipitation experiments. Our results define one major interaction site for KChIPs, including amino acids in the proximal N-terminus between residues 11 and 23, where binding and functional modulation are essentially equivalent. A further interaction site includes residues in the T1 domain. Notably, C-terminal deletions also had marked effects on KChIP2-dependent gating modulation and KChIP2 binding, revealing a previously unknown involvement of domains within the cytoplasmic Kv4.2 C-terminus in KChIP interaction. Less coincidence of binding and functional modulation indicates a more loose ‘anchoring’ at T1- and C-terminal interaction sites. Mammals are able to convert inorganic arsenic to mono-, di-, and trimethylated metabolites. In previous studies we have shown that the trivalent organoarsenic compounds are more toxic than their inorganic counterparts and that the toxicity is associated with the cellular uptake of the arsenicals. In the present study, we investigated cyto-/genotoxic effects of the arsenic compounds arsenate [Asi(V)], arsenite [Asi(III)], monomethylarsonic acid [MMA(V)], monomethylarsonous acid [MMA(III)], dimethylarsinic acid [DMA(V)], dimethylarsinous acid [DMA(III)], and trimethylarsine oxide [TMAO(V)] after an extended exposure time (24 h) and compared the uptake capabilities of fibroblasts (CHO-9 cells: Chinese hamster ovary) used for genotoxicity studies, with those of hepatic cells (Hep G2: hepatoma cell-line). To find out whether the arsenic compounds are bound to membranes or if they are present in the cytosol, the amount of arsenic was measured in whole-cell extracts and in membrane-removed cell extracts by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In addition, we forced the cellular uptake of the arsenic compounds into CHO-9 cells by electroporation and measured the intracellular arsenic concentrations before and after this procedure. Our results show that organic and inorganic arsenicals are taken up to a higher degree by fibroblasts compared to hepatoma cells. The arsenic metabolite DMA(III) was the most membrane permeable species in both cell lines and induced strong genotoxic effects in CHO-9 cells after an exposure time of 24 h. The uptake of all other arsenic species was relatively low (<1% by Hep G2 and <4% by CHO cells), but was dose-dependent. Electroporation increased the intracellular arsenic levels as well as the number of induced MN in CHO-9 cells. With the exception of Asi(III) and DMA(III) in CHO-9 cells, the tested arsenic compounds were not bound to cell membranes, but were present in the cytosol. This may indicate the existence of DMA(III)-specific exporter proteins as are known for Asi(III). Our results indicate that the uptake capabilities of arsenic compounds are highly dependent upon the cell type. It may be hypothesized that the arsenic-induced genotoxic effects observed in fibroblasts are due to the high uptake of arsenicals into this cell type. We present initial results from a survey of the Orion A and B molecular clouds made with the InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. This survey encompasses a total of 5.6 square degrees with the sensitivity to detect objects below the hydrogen burning limit at an age of 1 Myr. These observations cover a number of known star forming regions, from the massive star forming clusters in the Orion Nebula and NGC 2024, to small groups of low mass stars in the L1641. We combine the IRAC photometry with photometry from the 2MASS point source catalog and use the resulting seven band data to identify stars with infrared excesses due to dusty disks and envelopes. Using the presence of an infrared excess as an indicator of youth, we show the distribution of young stars and protostars in the two molecular clouds. We find that roughly half of the stars are found in dense clusters surrounding the two regions of recent massive star formation in the Orion clouds, NGC 2024 and the Orion Nebula. We estimate the levels of turbulence in the envelopes of class 0 and I protostars using a model based on measurements of the peak separation of double-peaked asymmetric line profiles. We use observations of 20 protostars of both class 0 and I taken in theline that show the classic double-peaked profile. We find that some class 0 sources show high levels of turbulence, whilst others demonstrate much lower levels. In class I protostars, we find predominantly low levels of turbulence. The observations are consistent with a scenario in which class 0 protostars form in a variety of environments and subsequently evolve into class I protostars. The data do not appear to be consistent with a recently proposed scenario in which class 0 protostars can only form in extreme environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
