The effect of Fe doping on the elastic and anelastic properties of heteroepitaxial InP films on microfabricated silicon cantilevers has been investigated by the vibrating-reed technique (typical frequencies 100 Hz to 10 kHz) with strain amplitudes in the range of 10[sup -6] to 10[sup -3] and in the temperature interval from 113 to 508 K. A matter of particular interest has been the effect of iron doping on the motion and multiplication of dislocations which are known to restrict the application of the material for instance in optoelectronic devices. For this purpose, the amplitude dependence of damping as well as internal friction as a function of temperature, thermal treatment, and frequency have been investigated and are discussed in terms of the present knowledge about twins and dislocations in InP. In addition, Young's modulus as well as film stress have been measured as a function of temperature, which permits an estimate of the thermal expansion coefficient. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Energy is considered both as a disciplinary core idea and as a concept cutting across science disciplines. Most previous approaches studied progressing energy understanding in specific disciplinary contexts, while disregarding the relation of understanding across them. Hence, this study provides a systematic analysis of cross-disciplinary energy learning. On the basis of a cross-sectional study with n = 742 students from grades 6, 8, and 10, we analyze students' progression in understanding energy across biology, chemistry, and physics contexts. The study is guided by three hypothetical scenarios that describe how the connection between energy understanding in the three disciplinary contexts changes across grade levels. These scenarios are compared using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The results suggest that, from grade 6 to grade 10, energy understanding in the three disciplinary contexts is highly interrelated, thus indicating a parallel progression of energy understanding in the three disciplinary contexts. In our study, students from grade 6 onwards appeared to have few problems to apply one energy understanding across the three disciplinary contexts. These findings were unexpected, as previous research concluded that students likely face difficulties in connecting energy learning across disciplinary boundaries. Potential reasons for these results and the characteristics of the observed cross-disciplinary energy understanding are discussed in the light of earlier findings and implications for future research, and the teaching of energy as a core idea and a crosscutting concept are addressed. The International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) has long espoused studies of deep subsurface life, and has targeted fundamental questions regarding subsurface life, including the following: "(1) What is the extent and diversity of deep microbial life and what are the factors limiting it? (2) What are the types of metabolism/carbon/energy sources and the rates of subsurface activity? (3) How is deep microbial life adapted to subsurface conditions? (4) How do subsurface microbial communities affect energy resources? And (5) how does the deep biosphere interact with the geosphere and atmosphere?" (Horsfield et al., 2014) Many ICDP-sponsored drilling projects have included a deep-life component; however, to date, not one project has been driven by deep-life goals, in part because geomicrobiologists have been slow to initiate deep biospheredriven ICDP projects. Therefore, the Deep Carbon Observatory (DCO) recently partnered with the ICDP to sponsor a workshop with the specific aim of gathering potential proponents for deep-life-driven ICDP projects and ideas for candidate drilling sites. Twenty-two participants from nine countries proposed projects and sites that included compressional and extensional tectonic environments, evaporites, hydrocarbon-rich shales, flood basalts, Precambrian shield rocks, subglacial and subpermafrost environments, active volcano–tectonic systems, megafan deltas, and serpentinizing ultramafic environments. The criteria and requirements for successful ICDP applications were presented. Deep-life-specific technical requirements were discussed and it was concluded that, while these procedures require adequate planning, they are entirely compatible with the sampling needs of other disciplines. As a result of this workshop, one drilling workshop proposal on the Basin and Range Physiographic Province (BRPP) has been submitted to the ICDP, and several other drilling project proponents plan to submit proposals for ICDP-sponsored drilling workshops in 2016. We describe a new innovative drill core scanner that semi-automatedly analyses drill cores directly in drill core trays with X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, without the need for much sample preparation or operator intervention. The instrument is fed with entire core trays, which are photographed at high resolution and scanned by a 3-D profiling laser. Algorithms recognise the geometry of the core tray, number of slots, location of the drill cores, calculate the optimal scanning path, and execute a continuous XRF analysis of 2 cm width along the core. The instrument is equipped with critical analytical components that allow an effective QA/QC routine to be implemented. We have used a resonant ultrasound spectroscopy technique to measure the bulk and shear modulus of fully dense, polycrystalline MgB2 between 4 and 300 K. We demonstrate that, under specific experimental conditions (isothermal crystallization from a single nucleation event in nearly spherical specimens), differential scanning calorimetry data can be used to deduce the velocity of a crystallization front in undercooled liquids. For Pd[SUB43.2]Cu[SUB28]Ni[SUB8.8]P[SUB20] alloy and 683 K < T < 700 K, the growth velocity is approximately 4.3 × 10[SUP13] (m s[SUP-1]) exp (-2.7 eV/kT). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The content of total lipids is a common cofactor necessary for a normalisation of organic contaminant concentrations in biological materials. Lipids are routinely determined gravimetrically after extraction of the material with chlorinated solvents. A new method substituting chlorinated solvents for a cyclohexane/isopropanol mixture was to be evaluated by an intercomparison exercise. The participating laboratories were requested to determine total lipid content in three different samples of fish tissue following their own procedures as well as the new method described in a standard protocol. No significant differences in the overall means of total lipid content were found for the investigated samples regardless of the determination method. Using the harmonised protocol of the new method, between laboratory reproducibilities below 10% were obtained in the exercise. The results indicate the applicability of the harmonised method for the determination of total lipids as a cofactor in the analyses of contaminant concentrations in marine biota samples. Levels of PCBs, HCB and Hg were determined in the muscle tissue of flounder ( Platichthys flesus L.), sampled at two sites of the highly industrialized Elbe estuary which is characterized by a decreasing gradient of contaminant levels in water and sediments towards the mouth of the river. The contaminant levels were compared to those found in muscle tissue of flounders caught in an unpolluted reference area, the Eider estuary. Juvenile flounders (1-2 cm total length) caught during their migration from the southern North Sea coast into the Elbe estuary in early summer showed a significantly higher level of contamination at both Elbe stations than those from the reference area. In the following spring, the flounders, having grown to a length of 12-14 cm, reflected the gradient of contaminants measured in water and sediment. However, during summer and late autumn a drastic increase in average contaminant concentration was observed in the muscle tissue of flounders taken from the less polluted estuarine site. It became evident that severe oxygen depletion in the heavily polluted area near Hamburg had provoked the migration of highly contaminated fish downstream to the less polluted sampling area; thus intermingling with the less contaminated flounder population of this region had occurred. The results obtained indicate that careful analysis of environmentally controlled behavioural patterns in the species used for monitoring purposes as well as an appropriate statistical treatment of the data gained from chemical analysis are essential for assessing the contaminant concentrations in organisms in relation to the pollution load of their habitats. We have measured the density of Pd[sub 40]Ni[sub 40-x]Cu[sub x]P[sub 20] (x=0–40) alloys in the amorphous and crystalline states. For x>30, the alloys are denser in the amorphous than in the crystalline states, which is contrary to the behavior of all known metallic glasses. For Pd[sub 40]Ni[sub 40-x]Cu[sub x]P[sub 20] and all other bulk metallic glasses where density data are available in both the amorphous and crystalline states, we find a correlation between the stability of the supercooled liquids and the difference between the molar volumes of the glassy and crystalline phases.
