The article presents a study which aims to describe a quantitative approach to test the pattern of relationships between machines of a given system so that the machines can be arranged to manufacturing cells. It aims to support the approach by an index to measure the clustering tendency. The study uses eigenvalues of the similarity coefficient matrix and Kaiser's rule to detect the number of clusters that exist in the part-machine matrix. Results of the study show that the proposed approach and the clustering tendency index are powerful to predict the obtainable cell formation.
