This article examines how distant-water fishing by wealthy nations depletes fish stocks and harms food security in developing countries while benefiting richer markets. It explores the impact of practices like bycatch, the use of fish aggregating devices, and illegal fishing on the Global South. The findings show that industrial fleets from wealthier countries use sophisticated technology to exploit poorly regulated fisheries, outcompeting local fishers and causing economic and ecological damage. Fisheries data analysis and algorithmic tracking are not working for developing nations either. The research calls for stronger international cooperation, better fisheries management, and support for small-scale fishers to protect livelihoods and ensure sustainable fish stocks. The article investigates what happens in the platform economy from the point of view of the algorithm-mediated relations established between corporations, governments, and users. From an assemblage approach, the article argues that a new order is emerging whose most salient feature is the collaborative alliances between governments and users versus the large corporations behind the platforms. A direct consequence of this is increasing regulation of platforms' economic activities. Based on the survey of four legal cases, the article applies a mapping method to identify the capacities exercised by the components of this algorithmic assemblage and observe that, while big tech corporations continue to occupy a central position, users and governments are pushing for the assemblage's reterritorialisation and, hence, their Deperipheralisation. Considering this novel trend, the article concludes that the most politically relevant pillar of the new identity of the algorithmic assemblage is a new social contract centred on data rights, literacy, and sovereignty. Hybridization permeates all fields of communication: documentaries are no exception. One example is The Left-to-Die Boat by Forensic Architecture (FA), an audio-visual account of how 63 refugees lost their lives in 2011 when their ship was adrift in the waters of Libya. The Left-to-Die Boat combines documentary techniques with data analysis and visualizations to expose a tragedy, change migration policies and sustain court cases. Based on critical data and documentary studies, this article inspects the methodological hybridization proposed by FA in six documentaries. The questions are: how does FA hybridize? What are the outcomes of this hybridization? What is hybridization today? The analysis links these documentaries' characteristics with functions and outcomes, offering a taxonomy that can be employed beyond this study. The findings indicate that activism is taking multidimensional forms, blurring the boundaries separating documentaries, data science and art in search of impact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tens of billions of US dollars are programmed from developed to developing countries to assist them in dealing with the impacts of climate change or to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This is the world of climate finance, a stream of money which includes public funding set to swell to $100 billion yearly by 2020. These sums conceal agenda-setting stories on how different countries are coping with climate change. Drawing on data analysis and interviews with beneficiaries of climate finance, this article examines local and adaptation funding as two entry points into the field, connecting different perspectives on climate finance. The process of hybridization has pervaded all fields of human communication; journalism and activism are no exceptions. An example is the graphic project Los vagabundos de la chatarra, an editorial undertaking that comprises observations, drawings, data, a map, a video and accounts of the people who gathered and sold scrap metal for a living on the edges of Barcelona during the economic crisis that started in 2007. This exploration is conducted and communicated in an extremely hybrid manner: it visualizes data on a map, it strives for social change, it is journalistic and it has a comic design face. Relying on media literature and critical data studies, discourse analysis and qualitative interviewing, this article examines the multifaceted shapes that activism and journalism are taking in complex times and explores the potential for subversion that such formats offer.
