Implantology as a branch of dentistry dedicated to dental implants, has become quite massive in Albania in the last years, providing solutions to many problems that patients have with oral health. Also, this service is provided as “Dental tourism” for many patients from outside with a cost of 20 % – 30 % lower compared with their countries. In this work, we want to provide an easy method to determine the relative bone density, helping dentists in theirs daily work and clinical practice. As method and technology, implantology generally is based in medical images from radiology techniques where capabilities of human observers to detect and describe small bone defects objectively are limited. For this reason, we used the opportunity provided by digital image processing techniques as a useful contribution to the process. In our case, we determine the Relative Bone Density (RBD) by measuring the mean grey value of the bone defect and the mean grey value of the healthy surrounding bone which is not overlapped by other anatomic structures. We use ImageJ and BoneJ plugin, as open source Java image processing program. This software offers many functions for image visualization, measurements and for processing. By contouring the regions of interest, we analyzed the gray-level changes in radiologic dental images. As method, it is a low-cost method and don’t need too much time for implementation and IT (Information Technology) knowledge. This test can be recommended as routine in dental care for initial evaluation and measurements for implantology. Also, it can be used from dentistry students in practical laboratory [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
