A new family of ionic Ir(III) cyclometalated complexes with general formula [Ir(CN)2(NN)][Br], was designed and prepared to be assessed as photocalysts for the visible light assisted ATRP polymerization of MMA. To this purpose, our design strategy involved both: i) the decoration of the cyclometalating (CN) and the ancillary (NN) ligands with various electron withdrawing and/or electron donor substituents and, ii) the use of Br− as the counter anion for these cationic Ir(III) species. After an extensive screening in which the [Ir(CN)2(NN)][Br]‐type compounds were compared to the model neutral complex fac‐[Ir(ppy)3], the "fully" amino‐substituted ion pairs abbreviated as [10][Br] and [11][Br], exhibited the best photocatalytic performances under irradiation with CFL lamps. It is worth noting that the outcomes of transient absorption spectroscopy (TAS) experiments combined with theoretical DFT calculations, enlightened the role played by the Ir(III) complexes in the mechanism of the photoATRP process, and suggested the rationalization of the different performances that were highlighted by our Ir(III) catalyst in the visible light assisted photopolymerization of MMA. The present paper introduces a preliminary analysis and the recent development of three‐dimensional (3D) printed thermoplastic polyurethane (TPE‐U) as a replacement of polyurethane (PU) foams that has led to a recyclable product. Among the various 3D printing techniques available, the team focuses on Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) because of its simplicity, affordability, and versatility in printing geometries and recyclability of materials. Four thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) elastomers with different stiffness (in the range of Shore A) are used. Therefore, through the combination of different printing geometries, modulation of the main printing parameters, and different materials, an attempt is made to simulate the mechanical behavior of PU foams, which are commonly used for the production of paddings. The mechanical evaluation, by means of dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), of the of 3D printed specimens has highlighted a qualitatively different and potentially superior behavior with respect to that of PU foam. This work compares the delamination behavior of epoxy CFRPs nano‐modified with nitrile butadiene rubber/polyethylene oxide (NBR/PEO) blend nanofibrous membranes with a rubber content of 70 wt%. While the electrospun mat is able to retain the nanofibrous structure even without crosslinking, photocrosslinking is also carried to evaluate the potential different efficacy on the delamination hindering. Double cantilever beam (DCB) and end‐notched flexure (ENF) tests show significant improvements of the energy release rates (G) both in Mode I (up to ≈4 times) and Mode II (up to ≈1.5 times). In particular, the presence of "liquid" rubber (uncrosslinked mat) leads to the best reinforcing action in Mode I, while the crosslinked membrane gives the highest delamination hindering in Mode II. Carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRC) are remarkably replacing conventional materials in application requiring high mechanical performance thanks to their light weight and outstanding mechanical properties. Due to the massive increase in their production and application, one of the main drawbacks resides in their disposal, both at the end of their life and as scraps and offcuts. Furthermore, the production of carbon fiber (CFs) requires high energy demand (183–286 MJ kg−1), hence the recovery of composites to reuse CF seems to be a promising option in terms of sustainability and circular economy. The recycling of carbon fibers (CFs) from composites is becoming a necessity, with a gain both from economic and environmental point of views because carbon fibers are a high value‐added material and the energy requirement for their production is pretty high. The use of such recycled fibers needs to find reliable applications to fully close the circular economic loop and here it is demonstrated that their applications as short fiber reinforcement in thermoplastics are not only convenient but as reliable as prostin fibers. This work wants to evaluate the effect of the recycling and reprocessing recycled carbon fibers versus pristine fibers, when inserted in polyprolylene (PP), in the presence of different amounts of compatibilizer to promote a better fiber/matrix interaction. Rubber containing nanofiber is investigated as structural modifiers of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) to improve their delamination resistance. The ability to obtain long lasting nanofibrous shape from liquid nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) has been demonstrated even without requiring instant cross‐linking when a second component is used together with NBR in the process. The second component can be a thermoplastic which either melts, such as poly(e‐caprolactone) (PCL), or holds steady, as poly(m‐phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) or nylon 66, during CFRP curing process. Assuming that NBR is not crosslinked, during curing of low Tm thermoplastic‐based rubber nanofibers, their morphology is lost, as for NBR/PCL, and both polymers blend with the surrounding epoxy resin thus leading to an outstanding toughening effect, but at the cost of the overall composite mechanical performance. When a second component is used which is preserved in nanofibrous fashion during curing (NBR/PMIA, NBR/nylon 66), instead, a good compromise is achieved, with still outstanding delamination hindering ability, together with almost fully preserved thermo‐mechanical performances. Delamination is a common failure mechanism affecting composite laminates. Thermoplastic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) nanofibers are recently proposed for toughening carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs), obtaining promising results. In the present work, PEO‐modified epoxy CFRPs underwent ageing in water for 1 month, and the interlaminar properties are assessed via double cantilever beam (DCB) and end‐notched flexure (ENF) tests. The Mode I delamination behavior of both PEO‐modified and unmodified commercial composite plates is compared. Water ageing slightly affects the mechanical properties of the nano‐modified laminates, though the interleaved nano‐reinforcement is water‐soluble. The use of wheat middlings (WM) and rice husks (RH) as biofillers for mixing with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix to produce new 3D-printable biocomposites was assessed. Filaments containing 10 and 20 wt.% agro-waste-derived biofillers were manufactured and, for the sake of comparison, filaments of neat PLA were also produced. The obtained filaments were characterized via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), showing potential for further application in additive manufacturing processing. Three-dimensionally printed specimens were thus produced and characterized via: DSC, also evaluating the specific heat capacity (CP) of specific 3D-printed specimens; dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), also applied for determining the coefficient of linear thermal expansion (CLTE) measured on 3D-printed specimens in two different directions (X and Y); and tensile tests. The latter testing campaign was carried out along three printing directions (X, Y, and Z axes) to test the intrinsic biocomposite features (X-printed samples) as well as interbead and interlayer adhesion (Y- and Z-printed specimens, respectively). All samples demonstrated acceptable properties. The inclusion of a cost-free natural material leads to a strong reduction of the whole material cost. Graphene (G) can effectively enhance polymers' and polymer composites' electric, thermal, and mechanical properties. Nanofibrous mats have been demonstrated to significantly increase the interlaminar fracture toughness of composite laminates, hindering delamination and, consequently, making such materials safer and more sustainable thanks to increased service life. In the present paper, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), polycaprolactone (PCL), and Nylon 66 nanofibers, plain or reinforced with G, were integrated into epoxy-matrix Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRPs) to evaluate the effect of polymers and polymers + G on the laminate mechanical properties. The main aim of this work is to compare the reinforcing action of the different nanofibers (polyether, polyester, and polyamide) and to disclose the effect of G addition. The polymers were chosen considering their thermal properties and, consequently, their mechanism of action against delamination. PEO and PCL, displaying a low melting temperature, melt, and mix during the curing cycle, act via matrix toughening; in this context, they are also used as tools to deploy G specifically in the interlaminar region when melting and mixing with epoxy resin. The high extent of modification stems from an attempt to deploy it in the interlaminar layer, thus diluting further in the resin. In contrast, Nylon 66 does not melt and maintain the nanostructure, allowing laminate toughening via nanofiber bridging. The flexural properties of the nanomodifed CFRPs were determined via a three-point bending (3PB) test, while delamination behavior in Mode I and Mode II was carried out using Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) and End-Notched Flexture (ENF) tests, respectively. Nanofibrous mats provide substantial delamination hindering in composite laminates, especially if the polymer (as rubbers) can directly toughen the composite resin. Here, the well-known Nylon 66 nanofibers were impregnated with Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) for producing rubber/thermoplastic membranes for hampering the delamination of epoxy Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRPs). The starting polyamide mats were electrospun using two different solvent systems, and their effect on the mat's thermal and mechanical properties was investigated, as well as the laminate Mode I delamination resistance via Double Cantilever Beam (DCB) tests. Plain Nylon 66 mats electrospun from formic acid/chloroform perform better than the ones obtained from a solvent system containing trifluoroacetic acid, showing up to + 64% vs + 53% in interlaminar fracture toughness (GI), respectively. The effect of NBR coating benefits both nanofiber types, significantly raising the GI. The best results are obtained when interleaving medium-thickness and lightweight mats (20 µm, 9–10 g/m2) with 70–80 wt% of loaded rubber, achieving up to + 180% in GI. The work demonstrates the ability of NBR at improving the delamination hindering of common polyamide nonwovens, paving the way to the use of NBR-coated Nylon 66 nanofibers as effective interleaves for GI enhancement and overall composite safety improvement. This work focuses on the optimization of pyro‐gasification process of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) with the aim of recovering carbon fibers (CFs) with properties suitable for the production of new more sustainable composites with high performances. In particular, the pyro‐gasification process is carried out on cured CFRPs panels based on both epoxy (EC) and vinyl ester (VC) matrices, which are the two most used resins for CFRPs. The matrix degradation is evaluated via sample's weight loss measurement and the recovered CFs obtained after different time of treatment are analyzed to identify convenient pyro‐gasification conditions to avoid damaging of the recovered CFs. The present work reports the use of recycled carbon fibers (rCF), obtained from pyro‐gasification treatment of carbon fibers reinforced polymers (CFRP), to produce a thermoplastic composite filament for additive manufacturing, in particular fused deposition modeling (FDM) process. Polylactic acid (PLA), a thermoplastic biobased and biodegradable polymer, is used as matrix for the composite filament, as it is the most common plastic used in FDM due to its good mechanical properties, stiffness, and strength. Upon production process optimization, filaments with rCF loadings of 5 and 10% wt are produced and analyzed. A particular attention is devoted to the evaluation of the production process on the carbon fibers (CFs) length and the study of the thermal and mechanical properties of the obtained composite materials. Biopolymers, such as poly(lactic) acid (PLA), which is obtained through green synthesis pathways from renewable resources, has attracted considerable interest in recent years because of the increasing need to reduce petroleum‐based plastic pollution and bringing their prices comparable with conventional thermoplastic commodities' price (e.g., polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene). The present work investigates the employment of 10% wt of natural materials, deriving from wheat milling process, as biofiller of PLA to develop a biocomposite filament suitable for 3D‐printing technique. The inclusion of a cost‐free natural material leads to a strong reduction of the whole material cost. In the present work, the mechanical behavior of flax fiber reinforced polymers (FFRPs) intended for racing applications is evaluated when subjected to different environmental conditions. A significant drop of mechanical performance in the presence of water (both 100% relative humidity and water submersion) is observed, highlighting also the fact that panels themselves already contain a fraction of water, probably absorbed onto the flax fibers prior their impregnation with the resin, that, where removed, may influence the mechanical behavior. Moreover, the flame behavior of the FFRP composite is also assessed in comparison with the widely applied carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) to highlight the effect of the different reinforcement. Both FRPs are produced with the same flame retarded resin to highlight the contribution of the different reinforcement. The evaluation of the flame behavior of the FFRP panels shows that it completely burns during the cone‐calorimetric test, involving in the fire both the matrix and the reinforcement with a stronger and faster heat release than the corresponding CFRP based on the same resin. The above observations seem thus to discourage their use in critical conditions, where the decrease of mechanical performance and the event of fire incidental condition may dramatically and negatively affect the final application. In the present work, thermoplastic elastomeric nanofibers made up of a homogenous blend of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) and Ppolycaprolactone (CL), with 80% wt of rubbery component, are used to modify a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminate with the aim of improving its delamination and damping behavior at the same time. Since the nanofibrous membrane is not chemically cross‐linked, the fibrous morphology is lost during composite curing owing to its melting. Nonetheless, the nanomodified CFRP displays an impressive ability to improve the delamination resistance in mode I and also an enhanced damping capacity at low temperature. The use of nanofibrous membranes allows for modification of specifically selected areas, thus maximizing the toughening and damping behavior where most required, without necessarily affecting the whole bulk of the resin. Both PCL and NBR components contribute to the final performance; however, the very high amount of rubber leads to a membrane difficult to handle whose final performance in CFRP modification is not superior to membranes up to 60% wt NBR that are instead more stable and easier to deal with. Overall, the proposed results are nonetheless very promising, taking into account also that the improved delamination resistance in mode I and enhanced damping are obtained without significantly sacrificing the weight and overall dimension of the obtained composite. Carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRPs) are increasingly used in a variety of applications demanding a unique combination of mechanical properties and lightweight characteristics such as automotive and aerospace, wind turbines, and sport and leisure equipment. This growing use, however, has not yet been accompanied by the setting of an adequate recycling industry, with landfilling still being the main management route for related waste and end-of-life products. Considering the fossil-based nature of carbon fibers, the development of recovery and recycling technologies is hence prioritized to address the environmental sustainability challenges in a bid to approach mitigating the climate emergency and achieving circularity in materials' life cycles. To this aim, we scaled up and tested a novel semi-industrial pilot plant to pyrolysis and subsequent oxidation of uncured prepreg offcuts and cured waste of CFRPs manufacturing. The environmental performance of the process proposed has been evaluated by means of a life cycle assessment to estimate the associated carbon footprint and cumulative energy demand according to three scenarios. The scale-up of the process has been performed by investigating the influence of the main parameters to improve the quality of the recovered fibers and the setting of preferable operating conditions. The pyro-gasification process attested to a reduction of 40 kgCO2eq per kg of recycled CFs, compared to virgin CFs. If the pyro-gasification process was implemented in the current manufacturing of CFRPs, the estimated reduction of the carbon footprint, depending on the composite breakdown, would result in 12% and 15%. This reduction may theoretically increase up to 59–73% when cutting and trimming waste-optimized remanufacturing is combined with circular economy strategies based on the ideal recycling of CFRPs at end-of-life. Delamination is the main responsible for structural failure of composites having a laminar structure. In the present work, polyamide (Nylon 66) nanofibers, even impregnated with uncrosslinked nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), are interleaved into epoxy‐based carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates with the aim to counteract the delamination phenomenon. The performance of nano‐modified composites using both the nanofibrous mat types, that is, Nylon 66 and NBR‐impregnated Nylon 66 membranes, is investigated. Mode I loading tests show a significant improvement of the interlaminar fracture toughness of rubber‐modified CFRPs, especially in the GI,R (up to +151%). The improvement in the GI,C is less pronounced, but still significant (up to +80%). The achieved results are very encouraging and pave the way to the use of such Nylon–NBR hybrid mats for hindering delamination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the effects of long-term exposure to OA on skeletal parameters of four tropical zooxanthellate corals naturally living at CO2 seeps and adjacent control sites from two locations (Dobu and Upa Upasina) in the Papua New Guinea underwater volcanic vent system. The seeps are characterized by seawater pH values ranging from 8.0 to about 7.7. The skeletal porosity of Galaxea fascicularis, Acropora millepora, massive Porites, and Pocillopora damicornis was higher (up to ~ 40%, depending on the species) at the seep sites compared to the control sites. Pocillopora damicornis also showed a decrease of micro-density (up to ~ 7%). Thus, further investigations conducted on this species showed an increase of the volume fraction of the larger pores (up to ~ 7%), a decrease of the intraskeletal organic matrix content (up to ~ 15%), and an increase of the intraskeletal water content (up to ~ 59%) at the seep sites. The organic matrix related strain and crystallite size did not vary between seep and control sites. This multi-species study showed a common phenotypic response among different zooxanthellate corals subjected to the same environmental pressures, leading to the development of a more porous skeletal phenotype under OA. Nanofibrous nonwovens show high versatility and outstanding properties, with reduced weight. Porous morphology, high material flexibility and deformability challenge their mechanical testing, severely affecting results reliability. Still today, a specific technical standard method to carry out tensile testing of nonwoven nanofibrous mats is lacking, as well as studies concerning tensile test data reliability. In this work, an accurate, systematic, and critical study is presented concerning tensile testing of nonwovens, using electrospun Nylon 66 random nanofibrous mats as a case study. Nanofibers diameter and specimen geometry are investigated to thoroughly describe the nanomat tensile behavior, also considering the polymer thermal properties, and the nanofibers crossings number as a function of the nanofibers diameter. Below a threshold value, which lies between 150 and 250 nm, the overall mat mechanical behavior changes from ductile to brittle, showing enhanced elastic modulus for a high number of nanofibers crossings. While specimen geometry does not affect tensile results. Stress–strain data are analyzed using a phenomenological data fitting model to better interpret the tensile behavior. The experimental results demonstrate the high reliability of the proposed mass‐based load normalization, providing a simple, effective, and universally suitable method for obtaining high reproducible tensile stress–strain curves. A set of three new Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes decorated with 5-aryl tetrazolato ligands (R–CN4)−, (D series, namely D1, D3 and D4), is presented herein. Whereas complex D1 represents the pyrazinyl tetrazolato analogue of a previously reported Ru(II) complex (D2) with the general formula cis-[(dcbpy)2Ru(N^N)]+, in which dcbpy is 2,2′-bipyridine-4,4′-dicarboxylic acid and N^N is the chelating 2-pyridyl tetrazolato anion, the design of the unprecedented Ru(II) species D3 and D4 relied upon a completely different architecture. More specifically, the molecular structure of thiocyanate-based species cis-[(dcbpy)2Ru(NCS)2], that is typically found in benchmark Ru(II) dyes for dye sensitized solar cell (DSSCs), was modified with the replacement of two of the –NCS ligands in favour of the introduction of 5-aryl tetrazolato anions, such as the deprotonated form of 5-(4-bromophenyl)-1H-tetrazole, for complex D3 and 5-(4-cyanophenyl)-1H-tetrazole in the case of complex D4. To streamline the behavior of the D series of Ru(II) complexes as photosensitizers for DSSCs, an in-depth analysis of the excited state properties of D1, D3 and D4 was performed through TDDFT calculations and TDAS (nanosecond transient difference absorption spectroscopy). The obtained results highlight a trend that was confirmed once D1, D3 and D4 were tested as photosensitizers for DSSC under different conditions. Herein, we describe a new family of tris chelate homoleptic Ru (II) complexes, [Ru(N^N)3]2+, where the role of the diimine‐type ligands (N^N) was fulfilled by 2‐pyridyl (PTZ) or 2‐quinolyl tetrazole (QTZ) derivatives decorated with various alkyl substituents at the N‐2 position of the tetrazole ring. The new Ru (II) complexes with general formula [Ru (PTZ‐R)3]2+ and [Ru (QTZ‐R)3]2+, were obtained as mixtures of facial (fac) and meridional (mer) isomers, as suggested by NMR (1H, 13C) experiments, and confirmed in the case of mer‐[Ru (QTZ‐Me)3]2+, by X‐ray crystallography. The photophysical behavior of the tetrazole‐based [Ru(N^N)3]2+ type species was investigated by UV–vis absorption spectroscopy, providing trends typical of polypyridyl Ru (II) complexes. The new homoleptic complexes fac/mer‐[Ru (PTZ‐R)3]2+ and fac/mer‐[Ru (QTZ‐R)3]2+ have been assessed for any eventual antimicrobial activity towards two different bacteria such as Gram‐negative Escherichia coli and Gram‐positive Deinococcus radiodurans. Whereas being inactive toward E. coli, the response of agar disks diffusion tests suggested that some of the new fac/mer Ru (II) complexes could inhibit the growth of D. radiodurans. This effect was further investigated by determining the growth kinetics in liquid medium of D. radiodurans exposed to the fac/mer‐[Ru (PTZ‐R)3]2+ and fac/mer‐[Ru (QTZ‐R)3]2+ complexes at different concentrations. The outcome of these experiments highlighted that the turn‐on of the growth inhibitory effect took place as the linear hexyl chain was appended to the PTZ or QTZ scaffold, suggesting also how the inhibitory activity appeared more pronouncedly exerted by the facial isomers fac‐[Ru (PTZ‐Hex)3]2+ and fac‐[Ru (QTZ‐Hex)3]2+ (MIC = ca. 3.0 μg/ml) with respect to the corresponding meridional isomers (MIC = ca. 6.0 μg/ml). Poly(meta‐phenylene isophtalamide) (PMIA) was processed via electrospinning to provide nanofibrous membranes with randomly and aligned fibers. Mechanical performance of such membranes was evaluated, applying a normalization procedure that takes into account the peculiar morphology of such complex substrate where voids can sum up to almost 80% of the sample volume. Random and aligned fibers membranes are applied onto wood panels to test their fire resistance in cone calorimetry when coated in polyaramidic thin nanofiber mats. Tests highlighted that random fibers provide a better fire protection, increasing Time to Ignition and decreasing the Fire Performance Index. Another important parameter affecting the performance is the adhesive system used to apply the nanofibers onto wood that is able to significantly modify the fire performance of the polyaramidic‐coated wood panels. Automotive interiors materials, like plasticized polyvinyl chloride (pPVC) synthetic leathers (SLs), require additives for improving their flame behavior. The preferred flame retardant (FR) used in pPVC is antimony trioxide (Sb2O3, ATO), though the use of antimony poses several issues, for both human health and the environment, related to its extraction, processing, and use. In order to investigate alternatives to ATO in high‐performance pPVC SLs, various commercial FRs have been selected and tested in a typical, highly plasticized formulation. These additives have been used either alone or combined to evaluate synergistic effects. Samples have been tested to assess mechanical properties, thermal stability, and flame resistance. Data have been compared with those of neat pPVC and a foil with 2 phr of ATO. Several FRs are effective in improving the flame response compared with neat pPVC, without compromising the other properties, in detail calcium hypophosphite and mixtures containing zinc hydroxystannate (ZHS). Finally, aluminum hydroxide and ZHS (ATH + ZHS) yields the cheaper among the alternatives here proposed, even though higher than ATO (+193%) whose price/performance ratio is difficult to overcome. Organo- and hydrogels have been proposed in the restoration field to treat different types of surfaces. The possibility to retain solvents and to have a controlled and superficial action allowed to use these materials for the removal of very thin layers applied on ancient historical objects, when the under paint layers are particularly delicate and water sensitive. In the last years, an increased attention has been devoted to the proposal of more healthy products to guarantee the safeguard of the operators. Few attention has been devoted to the development of green methods which foresee the use of renewable and biodegradable materials. The aim of this paper is to test a green organo-gel for the cleaning of water sensitive surfaces like varnished egg tempera paintings. The gel has been tested experimented on mock ups varnished with natural and synthetic materials and has been validated on a small portion of a Cimabue painting for the removal of two varnishes applied on two different test areas of the painting. The chiroptical properties of amorphous chiral polymers functionalized with conjugated trans-azoaromatic chromophore linked to the backbone through a chiral cyclic pyrrolidine moiety of one single configuration at the solid state, as thin films, were investigated. For the first time nanometric thin films of amorphous polymers (not liquid crystals) showed a remarkable chiral amplification upon thermal treatment at a temperature close to their Tg. The side-chain azobenzene chromophores rearrangement driven by the enhanced chain mobility seems to favor the formation of nanodomains of conformationally ordered macromolecular chains with one prevailing helical handedness whose optical activity depends on the configuration of the intrinsic chirality of the monomeric units and which as a result are stable at room temperature for a long time. During last decades, implantable drug delivery systems (DDS) have been developed to optimize therapeutic properties of drugs and ensure their release in a specific site. Acrylic polymers have obtained growing interest in biomedical applications for their biocompatibility and chemical properties that make them extremely versatile. In this work, we focused on the realization of polymeric systems for controlled and sustained release of betamethasone 17,21-dipropionate (BDP), a corticosteroid drug, in the treatment of the posterior eye diseases (PED). The investigated DDS were made of opportunely designed methacrylic block copolymers. Different series of methylmethacrylate/2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (MMA/HEMA) block copolymers, with various monomeric compositions (20-60 mol% HEMA), were synthetized by Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization to find the best hydrophilic/hydrophobic ratio, able to ensure optimal kinetic release. Copolymers were characterized by nuclear magnectic resonance, size exclusion chromatography, and differential scanning calorimetry. Monitoring of drug release from films loaded with BDP was carried out by HPLC analysis. In particular, PMMA- b-PHEMA with 47 mol% of HEMA showed the best release profile to achieve the therapeutic reference dose, used in the treatment of PED (1-3 µg/day), up to four months. New flame retardant organo-modified bentonites, based on nitrogen-containing compounds were synthesized via an ion exchange process starting from pristine bentonite with acidified 6-(4-butylphenyl)−1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine (BFTDA) and 11-amino- N-(pyridine-2yl)undecanamide (APUA). The amount of nitrogen rich organic modifier in the obtained organoclays (Bento-BFTDA and Bento-APUA) determined by TGA is around 0.4 mmol/g for both samples. With the aim to study the effect of these additives on a commercial epoxy resin, nanocomposites containing 3 and 5 wt% of the nanofillers were prepared by solventless addition to the epoxy resin formulation. For the sake of comparison similar nanocomposites with plain unmodified bentonite were produced. The nanocomposite's thermo-mechanical properties of all the produced samples were measured and they resulted slightly improved or practically unaffected. Finally, when the flame behavior was assessed in the cone-calorimeter, an encouraging decrease of 17% in the peak heat released rate (pHRR) was obtained at 3 wt% loading level with Bento-APUA. These promising results suggest that the APUA modified organoclay, prepared with low cost reactants and mild reaction conditions, might efficiently act as a flame retardant. POLYM. ENG. Commercial, aromatic perylene diimide (PDI) dyes were used to exfoliate few-layer graphene nanosheets in low-boiling organic solvents such as chloroform and tetrahydrofuran. Importantly, in such solvents, graphene cannot be exfoliated in the absence of the aromatic perylene diimide (PDI) dyes. The PDIs are physisorbed onto the basal plane of the nanosheet surface, which stabilized them in solution; the aromatic core lies flat on graphene and the PDI side groups influenced the physisorption strength and molecular packing. Upon varying just a single atom in the chemical structure of the side groups, significantly different exfoliation efficiencies were observed. The graphene-PDI interaction was studied at the nanoscale by scanning tunneling microscopy and molecular dynamics, at the microscale by atomic force and electron microscopy, and at the macroscale by optical spectroscopy. Thanks to the high volatility of the chosen solvent, the nanosheets can be embedded in standard polymer composites through a simple solventinduced swelling procedure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New amphiphilic block copolymers are easily synthesised by post-polymerisation modifications of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) chain derivatives. The obtained material, upon dispersion in water, is capable of self-assembling into robust micelles. These nanoparticles, which are also characterised by adaptable stability, were loaded with different thiophene based fluorophores. The photoluminescent micelles were administered to cultured cells revealing a high and rapid internalisation of structurally different fluorescent molecules by the same internalisation pathway. Appropriate pairs of chromophores were selected and loaded into the micelles to induce Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). The disappearing of the FRET phenomenon, after cell uptaking, demonstrated the intracellular release of the nanoparticle contents. The studied nanomaterial and the loaded chromophores have also shown to be biocompatible and non toxic towards the tested cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT In this article, we present the synthesis and characterization of a new thiophenic copolymer bearing the C60 fullerene directly linked to the end of a hexamethylenic side chain. This copolymer was prepared with good yield using a simple and straightforward post-polymerization functionalization procedure applied on a soluble regioregular polymeric precursor obtained by regiospecific organometallic coupling. Copolymer structural and photophysical properties were investigated by gel permeation chromatography, thermal analysis (DSC and TGA), NMR, IR, UV-Vis, and atomic force spectroscopy. The double-cable copolymer possesses good solubility in common organic solvents, high filmability, thermal stability, and low segmental aggregation tendency. It was tested as a photoactive layer in a polymeric solar cell showing a power conversion efficiency under 100 mW cm−2 AM 1.5 illumination higher than 4%, more than that of the reference cell made with the conventionally used P3HT/PCBM blend. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cured and uncured scraps from manufacturing of epoxy based carbon fiber reinforced composites were treated with a pyrolytic process to provide, as solid residue, carbon fibers to be re-used in new composites production. The industrial scraps were pyrolyzed at different temperatures in a 70 kg batch pilot plant and the pyrolysis products (gas, oil, and solid) were fully characterized. The solid residue (carbon fibers covered by a carbonaceous layer) was subjected to a further oxidative step at 500 and 600°C for different residence times to provide fibers devoid of any organic residue that did not volatilize during pyrolysis. The effects of both pyrolysis and oxidative process on the recovered fibers were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and Raman Spectroscopy. The reinforcement behavior of pyrolyzed and pyrolyzed/oxidized chopped fibers, compared to virgin fibers, was tested in the production of new Chopped Carbon Fiber Reinforced Composites. The optimized double pyrolysis/oxidation process was found to provide fibers whose performance in the composites were comparable to the virgin ones. POLYM. The availability of green and cheap technologies to recover polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) from microbial biomass is crucial for the development of a reliable and sustainable production chain. Here, two novel protocols are proposed to extract PHAs from Cupriavidus necator. The first method is based on PHA-extraction with dimethyl carbonate (DMC), a green solvent that is completely biodegradable and less harmful to humans and the environment than most solvents. The procedure can be applied directly to concentrated microbial slurries or to dry biomass, affording very high polymer recovery (＞85%) and excellent purity (＞95%). No degradation/decomposition of the polymer is observed in both cases. The second protocol uses fatty acid carboxylates as surfactants, which disrupt cell membranes, providing excellent polymer recovery (＞99%) and high purity (＞90%). Ammonium laurate can be successfully used and easily recycled (98%) by lowering the pH through CO2 addition. Therefore, both protocols reported here are effective and sustainable: the recovery and purity of the obtained PHAs are very high, the use of toxic chemicals is avoided, and the recycling of various solvents/surfactants used in the processes is optimal.
