Tooth extractions can result in alveolar bone dimensional changes, necessitating additional bone grafting for implant placement. Alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) aims to counteract postextraction changes. This case series evaluates the bone regenerative properties of a freeze-dried bone allograft (FDBA) and the clinical outcomes of implants in grafted extraction sites. A total of 33 patients were enrolled, undergoing single/multiple tooth extractions followed by ARP. Biopsy samples were harvested during implant placement for histologic and histomorphometric analysis. Clinical outcomes included marginal bone loss and pink esthetic score (PES). Twenty-five patients completed the study. FDBA-augmented sockets exhibited new bone formation adjacent to graft particles. Implants (n = 25) showed 100% survival and success rates at 1 and 2 years. PES improved significantly over time (P < .001), while marginal bone loss did not significantly differ at 1 and 2 years (P = .096). Specimens showed trabecular bone, residual FDBA particles, and marrow spaces. High magnification revealed immature bone and woven bone bridges around graft particles. No inflammatory cells were observed. This case series provides valuable insights into ARP performed with FDBA (as implants were placed after 3 months of healing without any additional bone augmentation), the histologic outcomes were favorable, and implants were successful after a 2-year follow-up period. The use of optical cavities on resonance with material excitations allows controlling light–matter interaction in both the regimes of weak and strong coupling. We study here the multimode vibrational coupling of low energy phonons in the charge-density-wave material 1T-TaS2 across its insulator-to-metal phase transition. For this purpose, we embed 1T-TaS2 into THz Fabry–Pérot cryogenic cavities tunable in frequency within the spectral range of the vibrational modes of the insulating phase and track the linear response of the coupled phonons across the insulator-to-metal transition. In the low temperature dielectric state, we reveal the signatures of a multimode vibrational strong collective coupling. The observed polariton modes inherit character from all the vibrational resonances as a consequence of the cavity-mediated hybridization. We reveal that the vibrational strong collective coupling is suppressed across the insulator-to-metal transition as a consequence of the phonon-screening induced by the free charges. Our findings emphasize how the response of cavity-coupled vibrations can be modified by the presence of free charges, uncovering a new direction toward the tuning of coherent light–matter interaction in cavity-confined correlated materials. We demonstrate a sensitive optically pumped magnetometer using rubidium vapor and 0.75 amg of nitrogen buffer gas in a sub-mm-width sensing channel excavated by femtosecond laser writing followed by chemical etching. The channel is buried less than 1 mm below the surface of its fused silica host material, which also includes reservoir chambers and micro-strainer connections, to preserve a clean optical environment. Using a zero-field-resonance magnetometry strategy and a sensing volume of 2.25 mm 3 , we demonstrate a sensitivity of ≈ 1 pT / Hz at 10 Hz. The device can be integrated with photonic structures and microfluidic channels with 3D versatility. Its sensitivity, bandwidth, and stand-off distance will enable detection of localized fields from magnetic nanoparticles and μ L NMR samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surface contaminants on customized implant abutments could trigger an inflammatory response in the peri-implant tissues. The aim of this randomized controlled study was to assess the radiographic bone changes around implants restored with customized, platform-switched abutments, with and without autoclave treatment, 12 months after definitive restoration. Dental implants were placed 1 mm subcrestally in 64 systemically healthy patients (mean age: 63.3 ± 10.0 years; 31 patients had a history of periodontitis) to replace single or multiple missing teeth. According to a randomization list, abutments were subjected to steam and autoclave sterilization (43 implants, test group) or steam cleaning alone (44 implants, control group). Periapical standardized radiographs were taken at implant placement, prosthetic abutment connection, and 12 months after definitive cement-retained restoration. All implants were clinically stable without any sign of infection at the 12-month follow-up. An average marginal bone loss of 0.25 ± 0.19 mm was found in the test group compared to 0.35 ± 0.23 mm in the control group (no statistically significant difference), while the percentage of bleeding sites was significantly higher in the control group (8.7% ± 13.1% vs 19.1% ± 19.8%; P = .035). Accurate precipitation measurement is critical for managing flood and drought risks. Traditional meteorological tools, such as rain gauges and remote sensors, have limitations in resolution, coverage, and cost-effectiveness. Recently, the opportunistic use of microwave communication signals has been explored to improve precipitation estimation. While there is growing interest in using satellite-to-earth microwave links (SMLs) for machine learning-based precipitation estimation, direct rainfall estimation from raw signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data via deep learning remains underexplored. This study investigates a range of machine learning (ML) approaches, including deep learning (DL) models and traditional methods like gradient boosting machine (GBM), for estimating rainfall rates from SNR data collected by interactive satellite receivers. We develop real-time models for rainfall detection and estimation using downlink SNR signals from satellites to user terminals. By leveraging a year-long dataset from multiple locations—including SNR measurements paired with disdrometer and rain-gauge data—we explore and evaluate various ML models. Our final models include ensemble approaches for both rainfall detection and cumulative rainfall estimation. The proposed models provide a reliable solution for estimating precipitation using Earth–satellite microwave links, potentially improving precipitation monitoring. Compared to the state-of-the-art power-law-based models applied to similar datasets reported in the literature, our ML models achieve a  46 %  reduction in the root mean squared error (RMSE) for event-based cumulative precipitation predictions. Infestations of ambrosia beetles in the tribe Xyleborini (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) are associated with economic losses to horticultural trees due to branch die‐back and tree death. Ethanol is a key attractant used for monitoring flight activity.Trapping experiments were conducted in woodlots in Ohio, USA, and Veneto, Italy, to characterize the effect of ethanol release rate on captures of Anisandrus maiche, Xyleborinus saxesenii, Xylosandrus crassiusculus and Xylosandrus germanus. In Ohio (2019, 2020 and 2021) and Italy (2021), traps were baited with centrifuge tubes that were modified to achieve ethanol release rates of 0.1–13.2 g/day. In Ohio (2022), traps were baited with varying quantities of manufactured lures to achieve release rates of 0.02–1.4 g/day.There was no consistent relationship between ethanol release rate and trap captures for the modified centrifuge tubes. In nine of sixteen analyses, traps baited with the centrifuge tubes releasing ethanol at 1.1 g/day or higher collected more A. maiche, X. saxesenii, X. crassiusculus and X. germanus than traps baited with centrifuge tubes releasing 0.1 g/day. In contrast, the manufactured lures releasing 0.1–1.4 g/day attracted more A. maiche, X. saxesenii, X. crassiusculus and X. germanus than lures releasing 0.02–0.05 g/day.This comprehensive study provides important insights into monitoring tactics for ambrosia beetles along with implications for optimizing ethanol‐baited traps as part of a 'push‐pull' strategy whereby repellents are used to 'push' beetles away from vulnerable trees and attractants are used to 'pull' them into annihilative traps. The development of efficient photocatalysts is crucial in addressing water pollution concerns, specifically in the removal of organic dyes from wastewater. In this context, the use of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) might represent a method to achieve high dye degradation efficiencies. On the other hand, the classical Ag NP production process involves several reactants and operating conditions, which make it poorly sustainable. In the present work, Ag NPs were synthesized according to a new sustainable process involving the use of natural extracts of Spirulina platensis and milder operating conditions. The material was also calcined to determine the influence of organic content on the properties of Ag NPs. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis displayed the AgCl and Ag phases with a crystalline size of 11.79 nm before calcination. After calcination, only the Ag phase was present with an increased crystalline size of 24.60 nm. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the capping role of the metabolites from the extract. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) revealed the spherical or quasi-spherical morphologies with agglomeration due to the calcination. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and Thermogravimetric (TGA) analyses further confirmed the involvement of metabolites in the synthesis of Ag NPs. The optical changes in the products were observed in a UV-Vis analysis. The Ag NPs were tested for their photocatalytic activity against the laboratory dye brilliant blue r in visible light in various conditions. Background: Cardiopulmonary resuscitation-associated lung edema (CRALE) is a phenomenon that has been recently reported in both experimental and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients. We aimed to explore the respiratory and cardiovascular pathophysiology of CRALE in an experimental model of cardiac arrest undergoing prolonged manual and mechanical chest compression (CC). Oxygen delivery achieved during mechanical or manual CC were also investigated as a secondary aim, to describe CRALE evolution under different hemodynamic supports generated during CPR. Methods: Ventricular fibrillation (VF) was induced and left untreated for 5 min prior to begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), including CC, ventilation with oxygen, epinephrine administration and defibrillation. Continuous mechanical and manual CC was performed alternating one of the two strategies every 5 min for a total of 25 min. Unsynchronized mechanical ventilation was resumed simultaneously to CC. A lung computed tomography (CT) was performed at baseline and 1 h after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) in surviving animals. Partitioned respiratory mechanics, gas exchange, hemodynamics, and oxygen delivery were evaluated during the experimental study at different timepoints. Lung histopathology was performed. Results: After 25 min of CPR, a marked decrease of the respiratory system compliance with reduced oxygenation and CO2 elimination were observed in all animals. The worsening of the respiratory system compliance was driven by a significant decrease in lung compliance. The presence of CRALE was confirmed by an increased lung weight and a reduced lung aeration at the lung CT, together with a high lung wet-to-dry ratio and reduced airspace at histology. The average change in esophageal pressure during the 25-min CPR highly correlated with the severity of CRALE, i.e., lung weight increase. Conclusions: In this porcine model of cardiac arrest followed by a 25-min interval of CPR with mechanical and manual CC, CRALE was consistently present and was characterized by lung inhomogeneity with alveolar tissue and hemorrhage replacing alveolar airspace. Despite mechanical CPR is associated with a more severe CRALE, the higher cardiac output generated by the mechanical compression ultimately accounted for a greater oxygen delivery. Synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using microalgae is gaining recognition for its environmentally friendly and cost-effective nature while maintaining high activity of NPs. In the present study, Ag NPs were synthesized using a methanolic extract of Chlorella vulgaris and subjected to calcination. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis showed a crystalline nature of the products with Ag2O and Ag phases with an average crystalline size of 16.07 nm before calcination and an Ag phase with 24.61 nm crystalline size after calcination. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed the capping functional groups on Ag NPs, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) displayed their irregular morphology and agglomeration after calcination. The organic coating was examined by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and thermogravimetric (TGA) analyses, confirming the involvement of the metabolites. The UV–Vis analysis showed a difference in optical properties due to calcination. Synthesized Ag NPs were applied for the photodegradation of hazardous dye Brilliant Blue R in visible light. Different values of light intensity, catalyst dose, initial dye concentration, and pH were tested to identify the optimal set of operating conditions. The highest degradation efficiency of 90.6% with an apparent rate constant of 0.04402 min−1 was achieved after 90 min of irradiation in the highest tested catalyst dosage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Subthreshold lasers operate below the threshold of visible tissue damage, thereby preventing ophthalmoscopically visible thermal damage to the chorio-retinal layers. They could represent a safe and effective alternative and/or adjunctive procedure to conventional lasers in treating diabetic macula edema (DME), central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR), and branch retina vein occlusion (BRVO). This review focuses on the use of subthreshold micropulse laser (SMPL), its settings, and clinical applications. Despite their widespread use, a standardized protocol for sub-threshold laser settings has not been established yet, and thus, there is uncertainty in selecting effective and safe parameters for any specific situation. We conducted a comprehensive overview of the existing indications for subthreshold laser therapy and their settings for different retinal diseases. The debate revolves around which parameters could guarantee the safety of the procedure for each case, depending on the duty cycle, the laser wavelength, the spot duration, and the power, with laser power titration on one side or choosing a fixed lowered power value on the other side. SMPL therapy for DME, CSCR, and BRVO-associated macular edema has shown significant effectiveness in reducing the macular thickness, facilitating subretinal fluid absorptions, increasing the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and reducing the number of intravitreal injections (IVI) required annually. We presented a broad list of the laser parameters reported in the literature, organized into different tables divided based on the specific pathology, with the aim of providing a useful tool for future studies. Computing planar orthogonal drawings with the minimum number of bends is one of the most studied topics in Graph Drawing. The problem is known to be NP-hard, even when we want to test the existence of a rectilinear planar drawing, i.e., an orthogonal drawing without bends (Garg and Tamassia in SIAM J Comput 31(2):601–625, 2001). From the parameterized complexity perspective, the problem is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by the sum of three parameters: the number b of bends, the number k of vertices of degree at most two, and the treewidth tw of the input graph (Di Giacomo et al. in J Comput Syst Sci 125:129–148, 2022). We improve this last result by showing that the problem remains fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized only by b + k . As a consequence, rectilinear planarity testing lies in FPT parameterized by the number of vertices of degree at most two. We also prove that our choice of parameters is minimal, as deciding if an orthogonal drawing with at most b bends exists is already NP-hard when k is zero (i.e., the problem is para-NP-hard parameterized in k); hence, there is neither an FPT nor an XP algorithm parameterized only by the parameter k (unless P = NP). In addition, we prove that the problem is W[1]-hard parameterized by k + tw , complementing a recent result (Jansen et al. in Upward and orthogonal planarity are W[1]-hard parameterized by treewidth. Neurological monogenic loss-of-function diseases are hereditary disorders resulting from gene mutations that decrease or abolish the normal function of the encoded protein. These conditions pose significant therapeutic challenges, which may be resolved through the development of innovative therapeutic strategies. RNA-based technologies, such as mRNA replacement therapy, have emerged as promising and increasingly viable treatments. Notably, mRNA therapy exhibits significant potential as a mutation-agnostic approach that can address virtually any monogenic loss-of-function disease. Therapeutic mRNA carries the information for a healthy copy of the defective protein, bypassing the problem of targeting specific genetic variants. Moreover, unlike conventional gene therapy, mRNA-based drugs are delivered through a simplified process that requires only transfer to the cytoplasm, thereby reducing the mutagenic risks related to DNA integration. Additionally, mRNA therapy exerts a transient effect on target cells, minimizing the risk of long-term unintended consequences. The remarkable success of mRNA technology for developing coronavirus disease 2019 vaccines has rekindled interest in mRNA as a cost-effective method for delivering therapeutic proteins. However, further optimization is required to enhance mRNA delivery, particularly to the CNS, while minimizing adverse drug reactions and toxicity. In this comprehensive review, we delve into past, present and ongoing applications of mRNA therapy for neurological monogenic loss-of-function diseases. We also discuss the promises and potential challenges presented by mRNA therapeutics in this rapidly advancing field. The genus Agrilus is one of the most diverse insect genera worldwide. The larval feeding activity causes extensive damage in both forests and orchards. In addition, more than 30 species have been introduced outside their native range so far, including the emerald ash borer Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire. Thus, the availability of efficient trapping protocols for early detection of Agrilus species at entry points is of utmost importance. In this study we tested whether trapping protocols developed for surveillance of A. planipennis in North America were also effective for other Agrilus species. In particular, through a multi-country assessment we compared the efficacy of detecting Agrilus species on: (i) green glue-coated prism traps vs. green Fluon-coated multi-funnel traps when baited with the green leaf volatile (Z)-3-hexenol or left unbaited; and (ii) green multi-panel traps vs. green multi-panel traps baited with dead adult Agrilus beetles (decoys). A total of 23,481 individuals from 45 Agrilus species were caught. Trap design significantly affected both species richness and abundance of Agrilus species in several of the countries where the trapping experiments were carried out, and green prism traps outperformed green multi-funnel traps in most cases. On the contrary, the addition of a (Z)-3-hexenol lure or dead adult beetle decoys on to traps did not improve trap catches. Our study highlights that reliable trap models to survey Agrilus species are already available, but also that there is the clear need to further investigate chemical ecology of Agrilus species to develop semiochemical lures that can improve detection efficacy. Purpose: To evaluate the influence of initial implant protrusion within the subantral space on hard tissue gain for implants placed simultaneously with transcrestal sinus floor elevation (TSFE) with a biomaterial. Materials and Methods: A total of 50 implants were placed after TSFE in 44 patients using either a human demineralized bone matrix or a deproteinized bone mineral matrix. Intraoral radiographs were obtained before and immediately after surgery. CBCT scans were obtained at the last follow-up (mean: 6.6 years). Results: The initial bone crest height was 4.6 ± 1.4 mm, and the initial protrusion of the implants above the sinus floor was 3.5 ± 1.4 mm. At the follow-up assessments, the hard tissue mean gain was 2.5 ± 1.5 mm, resulting in a mean residual protrusion of 1.1 ± 1.3 mm. Only 10 implants did not protrude above the apical level of hard tissue. Positive correlations were found between hard tissue gain and initial protrusion (r = 0.55; 95% CI: 0.32 to 0.72; P = .0001), between the initial and final protrusions (r = 0.38; 95% CI: 0.10 to 0.60; P = .007), and between the follow-up period and final protrusion (r = 0.35; 95% CI: 0.07 to 0.58; P = .012). Conclusions: The higher the initial protrusion was, the higher were the hard tissue gain and the final protrusion of the implant above the apical level of the hard tissue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Cauliflower (Brassica oleracea L.) and globe artichoke (Cynara scolymus L.) are vegetables with a high waste index mainly related to stems and leaves. In this study, enzymatic hydrolysates obtained from these wastes were proposed to be used as plant biostimulants. Life cycle assessment methodology was also applied to evaluate environmental performances related to cauliflower and artichoke byproducts. Results: Hydrolysates (HYs) were chemically and biologically characterized. Amino acids, organic acids, amines, polyols, mineral elements, phenols, tannins, flavonoids and sulfur compounds were identified and quantified by means of NMR, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and UV–visible analyses. Cauliflower leaf and flower HYs showed the highest concentration of free amino acids, whereas stems showed the highest concentration of Ca. Regarding artichoke, asparagine, glutamine and aspartic acid were exclusively detected in stems, whereas artichoke leaves showed the highest Mg and Mn levels together with the highest antioxidant activity. The HYs diluted in water were tested as biostimulants. The impacts of five concentrations of HYs (0.00, 0.28, 0.84, 2.52 and 7.56 g L−1) on seed germination and early seedling growth of crimson clover, alfalfa, durum wheat and corn were investigated. Conclusions: The application of artichoke biostimulant (0.28 g L−1) positively influenced the coefficient of velocity of germination in alfalfa, crimson clover and durum wheat, whereas cauliflower biostimulant significantly improved corn germination speed. © 2024 The Author(s). The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of inappropriate treatment among hospitalised patients affected by SARS-CoV-2 infection before hospital admission during the Omicron era. This single-centre, retrospective observational study included all the patients hospitalised because of SARS-CoV-2 infection during three periods characterised by the Italian prevalence of an Omicron variant of concern: (1) January–May 2022 (BA.1–BA.2), (2) June–October 2022 (BA.5), and (3) November 2022–March 2023 (BQ.1-XBB). Inappropriate treatment was defined as pre-hospitalisation exposure to antibiotics and/or steroids in the absence of a documented bacterial infection or the need for steroid treatment of an underlying medical condition. A total of 931 subjects were hospitalised: 394 in period 1, 334 in period 2, and 203 in period 3. Of the 157 patients undergoing inappropriate treatment (16.9%), 142 (15.3%) received antibiotics and 52 (5.6%) steroids. The proportion of inappropriately treated patients significantly decreased over time, from 23.1% in period 1 to 11.7% in period 2 and 13.3% in period 3 (p < 0.001), and there was a parallel decrease in antibiotic (p < 0.001) and steroid treatment (p < 0.013). Only 13 subjects (1.4%) received early pre-hospitalisation treatment for SARS-CoV-2. High-grade gliomas (HGGs) constitute the most common malignant primary brain tumor with a poor prognosis despite the standard multimodal therapy. In recent years, immunotherapy has changed the prognosis of many cancers, increasing the hope for HGG therapy. We conducted a comprehensive search on PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases to include relevant studies. This study was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Fifty-two papers were finally included (44 phase II and eight phase III clinical trials) and further divided into four different subgroups: 14 peptide vaccine trials, 15 dendritic cell vaccination (DCV) trials, six immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) trials, and 17 miscellaneous group trials that included both "active" and "passive" immunotherapies. In the last decade, immunotherapy created great hope to increase the survival of patients affected by HGGs; however, it has yielded mostly dismal results in the setting of phase III clinical trials. An in-depth analysis of these clinical results provides clues about common patterns that have led to failures at the clinical level and helps shape the perspective for the next generation of immunotherapies in neuro-oncology. Background: Antibody-mediated rejection is a significant cause of kidney transplant failure. Recent studies have shown that the MHC class I MICA gene influences the transplantation outcome. However, the role of the primary MICA receptor, NKG2D, has yet to be explored. Aim: We aimed to investigate the correlation between recipient/donor MICA allele matching and NKG2D genotype with the risk of antibody-mediated rejection and their potential clinical effects and implications for organ maintenance therapy. Methods: Of the 524 patients who underwent transplantation, 387 were eligible for the study. Complete MICA allele and two functional polymorphisms of NKG2D (rs1049174C>G and rs2255336G>A) were analyzed in 148 transplanted patients and 146 controls. Results: Increased recipient/donor MICA allele mismatches correlate with an elevated risk of antibody-mediated rejection (X2 = 6.95; Log-rank=0.031). Notably, the rs1049174[GG] genotype contributes to a significantly increased risk of antibody-mediated rejection (X2 = 13.44; Log-rank=0.001 and X 2 = 0.34; Log-rank=0.84). The combined effect of two MICA allele mismatches and rs1049174[GG] genotype shows the highest risk (X2 = 23.21; Log-rank<0.001). Most importantly, patients with rs1049174[GG] and rs2255336[ AA ] genotypes may respond less to mTOR inhibitor immunosuppressive therapy than Calcineurin inhibitors (rs1049174[GG]; P=0.035; and rs2255336[AA] ; P=0.002). Background: Long COVID, a highly heterogeneous syndrome affecting millions of people worldwide, is emerging as an urgent public health threat, but data on the predictors of specific clinical manifestations over long follow-up periods are limited. The aim of this study is to investigate the role of viral variants and other predictors in long COVID incidence and clinical manifestations. Methods: All COVID-19 patients aged > 18 years and hospitalized from March 1 2020 to April 2022 in two Italian University Hospitals were enrolled. Incidence and clinical presentation of long COVID were assessed through structured questionnaires delivered by phone calls. The association between possible risk factors collected during hospitalization and long COVID was reported using an adjusted logistic regression and reported as odds ratios (ORs) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Among 1,012 recruited patients, over a median follow-up of 19 months (IQR: 15–24 months), the cumulative incidence of long COVID was 91.7%, with the most common clinical manifestations involving the respiratory system (80.5%) and the neurological system (77.3%). Background: The role of Vascular risk factors (VRFs) in the progression of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and cognitive decline remains to be elucidated, with previous studies resulting in conflicting findings. The possible impact of age-specific mechanisms of resilience/vulnerability is an under addressed issue. We evaluated the association of VRFs with markers of amyloid deposition, neurodegeneration, and blood-brain-barrier (BBB) permeability (Albumin quotient, Qalb), stratifying patients into early-onset (< 65, EOAD), classic late-onset (65–75, cLOAD) and very late-onset (> 75, vLOAD), to evaluate the moderating effect of age of onset. Moreover, we explored the effects of VRFs on cognitive decline at one year follow-up (ΔMMSE). Methods: For 368 patients with biologically confirmed AD, we computed eight risk factors in a composite measure of cumulative vascular risk (vascular score, VS). Stratifying patients according to age of onset, we regressed VS and main individual VRFs on p-tau/Aβ42, t-tau and Qalb, and used bootstrapped mediation analysis to test direct and indirect associations of VS with t-tau, using Qalb as mediator. In a subset of 105 patients, we performed multivariate backward regressions to assess the effects of sex, APOE, Qalb, VS, p-tau/Aβ42 and t-tau on ΔMMSE. Results: VS was positively associated with CSF t-tau in more vulnerable groups burdened by more aggressive disease progression (EOAD: β = 0.256, p = 0.019) or aging (vLOAD: β = 0.007, p < 0.001). Conversely, in patients with classic age of onset VS was associated with higher BBB permeability (cLOAD: β = 0.173, p = 0.015), which simultaneously causes the decrease of CSF t-tau, as a possible resilience response. Cognitive decline was not associated with VS in any of the subgroups. Instead, it was affected by both higher CSF t-tau and increased Qalb values in those with very early or very late onset (EOAD and vLOAD), but by Qalb alone in patients with classic age of onset, where CSF t-tau levels might be buffered by BBB permeability. Conclusions: Our results show that age of onset weighs on the heterogeneous effects played by VRFs in AD, which do not seem to have direct impact on cognitive decline. Cellular motility is essential for making and maintaining multicellular organisms throughout their lifespan. Migrating cells can move either individually or collectively by a crawling movement that links the cytoskeletal activity to the adhesion surface. In vitro stimulation by electric fields can be achieved by direct, capacitive or inductive coupled setups. We tested the effects of electrical stimulation provided by capacitive coupling on glioma cells, using a capacitive-coupled system powered by a potential difference of 35 V between two electrodes placed outside the culture dish. Numerical dosimetry identified two different fields: (i) in the order of 103 V/m at the level of the dielectric substrates, with almost uniform distribution; (ii) in the order of 10−1 V/m at the level of the culture medium, with spatial and material-dependent distribution. The scratch assay and the tracking of single-cell movement showed a boosted motility when crawling occurs on polystyrene surfaces, demonstrating the feasibility of this peculiar exposure system to generate forces capable of influencing cell behavior. Background: Transpulmonary pressure is the effective pressure across the lung parenchyma and has been proposed as a guide for mechanical ventilation. The pleural pressure is challenging to directly measure in clinical setting and esophageal manometry using esophageal balloon catheters was suggested for estimation. However, the accuracy of using esophageal pressure to estimate pleural pressure is debated due to variability in the mechanical properties of respiratory system, esophagus and esophageal catheter. Furthermore, while a vertical pleural pressure gradient exists across lung regions, esophageal pressure balloon provides a single value, representing, at most, the pressure surrounding the esophagus. Methods: In a swine model with a preserved esophagus and a single homogenous, easily measurable intrathoracic pressure, we evaluated esophageal pressure's agreement with intrathoracic pressure at different positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) levels (0, 5, 10, 15 cmH2O). We assessed the improvement of measurement accuracy by correcting absolute esophageal values using a previously described technique, that accounts for the pressure generated by the esophageal wall in response to esophageal balloon inflation. The study involved five swine, wherein two different esophageal catheters were used alongside the four distinct PEEP levels. Swings, uncorrected and corrected absolute esophageal pressures (end-inspiratory, end-expiratory) were compared with their respective intrathoracic pressures. The effect of correction technique was assessed with manual incremental step inflation procedure. Results: We found that both catheters significantly overestimated absolute esophageal pressure compared to intrathoracic pressure (5.01 ± 3.32 and 6.06 ± 5.62 cmH2O at end-expiration and end-inspiration, respectively), with error increasing at higher positive end-expiratory pressure levels (end-expiration: 2.36 ± 2.03, 3.77 ± 1.37, 6.24 ± 2.51 and 7.69 ± 4.02 for each PEEP level, P < 0.0001; end-inspiration: 1.71 ± 2.10, 3.70 ± 1.73, 7.67 ± 3.62 and 11.14 ± 7.60 for each PEEP level, P = 0.0004). Applying the correction technique significantly improved agreement for absolute values (0.82 ± 1.62 and 1.86 ± 3.94 cmH2O at end-expiration and end-inspiration, respectively). Esophageal pressure swings accurately estimated intrathoracic pressure swings at low-medium intrathoracic pressures (-0.64 ± 0.62, -0.07 ± 0.53, 1.43 ± 1.51, and 3.45 ± 3.94 at PEEP 0, 5, 10 and 15 cmH2O, respectively; P = 0.0197). Controlling light at subwavelength scales is crucial in nanophotonics. Hyperbolic polaritons, supporting arbitrarily large wavevectors, enable extreme light confinement beyond the diffraction limit. Traditional hyperbolic metamaterials suffer from high losses due to metallic components, while natural low-loss hyperbolic phonon polaritons are limited to the mid-infrared range. Some hyperbolic materials at visible frequencies have been studied, but they are either very lossy or only feature out-of-plane hyperbolicity. Here, we demonstrate the presence of low-loss, in-plane hyperbolic plasmon polaritons in the visible and near-infrared in thin-films of MoOCl2, a natural van der Waals crystal. The polariton dispersion is predicted based on the framework of light propagation in biaxial media and experimentally confirmed by real space nano imaging on exfoliated flakes. MoOCl2 constitutes an ideal material platform for visible range applications leveraging the unboundedness of hyperbolic modes, such as hyperlensing, Purcell factor enhancement, and super-resolution imaging, without the drawbacks of metamaterials. Hyperbolic polaritons in van der Waals materials are light-matter excitations holding potential for nanophotonics applications, but they are mostly observed in the mid-infrared range. Purpose: Endometriosis has a strong impact on women's quality of life (QoL). Pain is the main symptom of the disease, but bowel dysfunctions such as fecal incontinence, constipation and voiding difficulties are also reported. Patients could suffer from a Low Anterior Resection Syndrome (LARS)-like syndrome. Transanal irrigation (TAI), known to alleviate LARS-related symptoms, has been suggested to aid bowel dysfunction in endometriosis patients, potentially facilitating pelvic floor rehabilitation. Methods: We retrospectively collected data from 60 patients with endometriosis and bowel dysfunction who had been prescribed with the Peristeen® Plus TAI system. Patient satisfaction, pain, QoL and LARS score were evaluated before (baseline) and after TAI treatment (follow-up of approximately 12 months). Results: Of the 60 patients meeting the inclusion criteria, 12 patients did not complete the questionnaires at follow-up and 16 patients discontinued treatment. Data analysis performed on 32 patients showed a mean increase of 3.6 points in patient satisfaction after TAI treatment and a mean pain reduction of 1.8 points (both, p-value < 0.001). LARS score decreased from a mean of 21.9 at baseline to a mean of 12.7 (p-value < 0.001). Accordingly, there was a notable improvement in patients' QoL. Conclusion: TAI is a useful treatment for bowel dysfunctions in patients with endometriosis. When offered to these patients, TAI seems to represent a valuable strategy to reduce pelvic floor stress. Snow is particularly impacted by climate change and therefore there is an urgent need to understand the temporal and spatial variability of depth of snowfall (HN) trends. However, the analysis of historical HN observations on large‐scale areas is often impeded by lack of continuous long‐term time series availability. This study investigates HN trends using observed time series spanning the period 1920–2020 from 46 sites in the Alps at different elevations. To discern patterns and variations in HN over the years, our analysis focuses also on key parameters such as precipitation (P), mean air temperature (TMEAN), and large‐scale synoptic descriptors, that is, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Arctic Oscillation (AO) and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) indices. Our findings reveal that in the last 100 years and below 2000 m a.s.l., despite a slight increase in winter precipitation, there was a decrease in HN over the Alps, especially for southern and low‐elevation sites. The South‐West and South‐East regions experienced an average loss of 4.9 and 3.8%/decade, respectively. A smaller relative loss was found in the Northern region (2.3%/decade). The negative HN trends can be mainly explained by an increase of TMEAN by 0.15°C/decade. Most of the decrease in HN occurred mainly between 1980 and 2020, as a result of a more pronounced increase in TMEAN. This is also confirmed by the change of the running correlation between HN and TMEAN, NAO, AO over time, which until 1980 were not correlated at all, while the correlation increased in later years. This suggests that in more recent years favourable combinations of temperature, precipitation, and atmospheric pattern have become more crucial for snowfall to occur. We examine the effects of the pandemic on the business models of Italian Fabbricerie. The analysis investigates whether the pandemic has impacted visitor flows in quantitative (e.g. the number of visitors) and qualitative terms (e.g. the type of visitors) and the emergence of new market segments. We examine whether the restrictions due to the health emergency and the resources supporting the cultural sector have changed these organizations' cost and revenue structure and generated new costs or revenues. Finally, we focus on the strategies implemented to unveil whether cultural offerings changed and to understand the role of new digital tools or communication channels in responses to the pandemic. Our results thus contribute a better understanding of cultural organizations' business models and the pandemic's impact on the value they generate for visitors and other stakeholders. Background: Reserves' mechanisms explain inconsistencies between accumulation of neuropathological damage and clinical manifestations. Leisure activities are believed to promote reserves. Objective: This study evaluates whether cognitive, social, and physical leisure activities performed over life-span predict current cognitive functioning in normal aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD) continuum. Methods: 35 AD, 24 amnestic-Mild Cognitive Impairment (a-MCI) patients, 21 individuals with subjective cognitive complaint (SCD), and 25 controls underwent a questionnaire developed to quantify leisure activities in different life periods, the Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-Revised (ACE-R), and T1-weighted 3T-MRI scans for brain volumetrics and cortical thickness quantification. Partial/total leisure activities' scores and demographic and brain variables were entered as predictors, while ACE-R scores as dependent variables in linear regression analyses. Results: Current level of cognition was predicted by (i) social and physical activities performed in middle age and current cognitive activity in AD; (ii) cognitive and social activities performed in middle age, current age and cortical thickness in a-MCI; (iii) recreational activities the set of lifetime, current age, and brain features in SCD; (iv) education and the set of lifetime leisure activities over lifespan in controls. Conclusions: This study shows a funnel effect due to gradual reduction of stimulatory activities in the transition from healthy aging to AD. Reserve indices taking into account different types of stimulatory activities allow to capture even smallest residual effects of reserves accumulated over lifespan, until their complete depletion at advanced AD stages. Background: Current diving physiology postulates that SCUBA divers' arterial blood gas (ABG) levels vary proportionally to environmental pressure, but, to date, ABGs have only been obtained during simulated dives. Also, recent evidence supports the use of the arterial/alveolar (a:A) partial pressures of oxygen (PO2) ratio to predict the arterial PO2 (PaO2) under hyperbaric conditions from measurements obtained at 1 atmosphere absolute (ATA). This work summarizes ABGs obtained in SCUBA divers in real underwater conditions and aims to validate the a:A ratio in predicting PaO2 in this subset of individuals at depth. Methods: The study was approved by the local ethics committee. After cannulating the radial artery of the non-dominant limb, ABGs were sampled at the surface before the dive (A), at depth (15 meters of freshwater (mfw) or 42 mfw) before (B) and after (C) pedaling on a submersed bicycle for 10 minutes, and back at surface (D). After calculating the surface alveolar PO2 for each subject, the a:A ratio was obtained and used to predict PaO2 at depth. A linear regression between measured and predicted PaO2 was reported, along with the goodness-of-fit F test. Results: Six subjects performed the dive at 15 mfw, and four others at 42 mfw. The PaO2 proportionally increased at both depths, remaining stable before and after pedaling. The a:A calculated from the baseline ABG obtained at rest, out of the water, adequately predicted the PaO2 at depth (R2 = 0.97, p<0.001), better at 15 mfw but losing accuracy at 42 mfw. Conclusions: The ABGs confirmed the proportional rise of PaO2 in SCUBA divers underwater. The a:A ratio could be used to predict the magnitude of PaO2 rise at depth to limit exposure to hyperoxia, especially in repetitive recreational dives and professional divers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Shared biological factors may play a role in both the cognitive deficits and the increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome observed in individuals with Schizophrenia (SCZ). These factors could entail disturbances in tryptophan (Trp) to both melatonin (MLT) and kynurenine (Kyn) metabolic pathways, as well as inflammation and alterations in the gut microbiome composition. Methods: The present research project aims to investigate this hypothesis by recruiting 170 SCZ patients from two different recruitment sites, assessing their cognitive functions and screening for the presence of metabolic syndrome. Additionally, we plan to assess the impact of a 3-month cognitive remediation therapy on 30 of these patients. We will analyze clinical data alongside serum biomarkers and gene expression related to the Trp- to MLT and Kyn metabolic pathways, markers of inflammatory and composition of the gut microbiome. The association between Trp-MLT-Kyn levels, expression levels of selected genes, inflammatory markers and clinical phenotypes will be analyses in the context of general linear models. Discussion: This project has the potential to identify some typical SCZ symptomatic clusters that will be more stringently associated with variations in the Trp-MLT-Kyn/inflammatory system and with a better response to cognitive remediation therapy. Moreover, in a future perspective, it may highlight a group of patients who may benefit from a pharmacological treatment aiming at reinstating the physiological Trp to MLT and Kyn system. Introduction: Neurosonology is a vital paraclinical investigation in modern neurology. However, access to education and certification in neurosonology for neurology residents and young specialists in Europe is challenging, and comprehensive data regarding this topic are scarce. Information regarding difficulties in neurosonology training across Europe may help bring this topic under the spotlight and act as a call for the harmonization of curricula across the continent. Methods: We performed an online survey targeting European neurology residents and young specialists, focusing on neurosonology training and certification. The survey was conducted between May and September 2023 and received responses from 282 participants representing 37 European countries. Results: There were disparities in neurosonology training during residency, with 6 (16.2%) out of 37 countries reporting a dedicated curriculum. The respondents expressed an overall lack of satisfaction with theoretical knowledge (rating their experience as very poor 28.0%, poor 20.2%, neutral 25.9%, good 19.3%, and very good 6.6%) and practical skills gained during their training (rating their experience as very poor 30.9%, poor 18.9%, neutral 22.6%, good 18.1%, and very good 9.5%). A total of 282 respondents (5.7%), 16 held a national certification in neurosonology, claiming obstacles such as high costs of certification and a limited number of certifying centers. Discussion: This survey reveals significant variations in neurosonology training across Europe, indicating difficulties in obtaining certification. Despite the increasing importance of neurosonology, many neurologists feel inadequately prepared and lack practical training during residency, emphasizing the need for better and more standardized access. Conclusion: The survey underscores challenges and disparities in neurosonology training and certification in Europe. Standardization of curricula and increased awareness about available certifications are crucial to address these issues. Animal movements are a key factor in the spread of pathogens. Consequently, network analysis of animal movements is a well-developed and well-studied field. The relationships between animals facilitate the diffusion of infectious agents and, in particular, shared environments and close interactions can facilitate cross-species transmission. Cattle are often the focus of these studies since they are among the most widely distributed and traded species globally. This remains true for Italy as well, but with an important additional consideration. Indeed, another important productive reality in the peninsula is buffalo farming. These farms have an interesting characteristic: approximately two-thirds of them also rear cattle. This coexistence between cattle and buffalo could have an impact on the diffusion of pathogens. Given that buffalo farms are often overlooked in the literature, the primary goal of this work is to investigate the potential consequences of omitting buffalo from cattle network analyses. To investigate this impact, we will focus on Q fever, a disease that can infect both species and is present on the Italian territory and for which the impact of the buffalo population has not been thoroughly studied, and simulate its spread to the farms of both species through compartmental models. Our analysis reveals that despite the significant difference in network sizes, the unique characteristic of Italian buffalo farms makes the buffalo network essential for a comprehensive understanding of bovine disease dynamics in Italy. In this pilot study, we assessed the role of autophagy in Crohn's Disease (CD), particularly in patients with a stenosing phenotype. Through the analysis of biopsied specimens from 36 patients, including 11 controls and 25 CD patients, categorized into inflammatory and stenosing groups, we identified a significant reduction in the autophagosomal marker Lc3b-II in patients with active inflammation and stenosis. This was paralleled by an increase in oxidative stress markers, including sNOX2-dp and H2O2, and a decrease in the antioxidant capacity measured by HBA, suggesting an imbalance in autophagy and oxidative stress mechanisms. Additionally, our findings show a correlation between autophagy markers and oxidative stress levels, indicating that autophagy dysfunction may play a pivotal role in CD and in the progression of a stenosing disease phenotype, by failing to eliminate detrimental molecules and pathogenic bacteria, thereby promoting fibrosis. This study is the first to demonstrate in vivo autophagy inhibition in stenosing CD patients and suggests that stimulating autophagic processes could offer a new avenue for the prevention and treatment of intestinal fibrosis in CD. Our results highlight the importance of exploring the interactions between autophagy, the fibrotic process, and the inflammatory cascade, opening avenues for potential therapeutic interventions in CD management. Pressure support ventilation (PSV) is a form of assisted ventilation which has become frequently used, with the aim of partially unloading the patient's inspiratory muscles. Both under- and over-assistance should be avoided to target a lung- and diaphragm- protective ventilation. Herein, we propose a conceptual model, supported by actual data, to describe how patient and ventilator share the generation of tidal volume (Vt) in PSV and how respiratory system compliance (Crs) affects this interaction. We describe the presence of a patient-specific range of PSV levels, within which the inspiratory effort (Pmus) is modulated, keeping Vt relatively steady on a desired value (Vttarget). This range of assistance may be considered the "adequate PSV assistance" required by the patient, while higher and lower levels may result in over- and under-assistance respectively. As we also show, the determinants of over- and under- assistance borders depend on the combination of Crs and the inspiratory effort which the patient is able to sustain over a period of time. These concepts can be applied at the bedside to understand if the level of assistance is adequate to patient's demand, focusing on the variation of relevant parameters (Vt, Pmus and pressure-muscle-index) as patient reaction to a change in the level of assistance. The site of San Valentino in San Vito al Tagliamento is one of the main urnfield cemeteries in northeastern Italy. Archaeological excavations carried out in the seventies brought to light a cremation cemetery consisting of mainly urn graves with pottery and metal artefacts as grave goods. These materials suggest that the individuals buried in San Valentino were not an isolated local community but had intense contacts with other north-Adriatic communities, in particular with the neighbouring Veneto area, as suggested by the close similarity of the biconical vessels with those recovered in the graves of Este. This paper provides the first osteological study of a preserved sample of individuals buried at San Valentino and uses an innovative multi-proxy approach to refine the chronology of the site through radiocarbon dating of bone apatite, investigate human mobility using strontium isotopes on calcined human remains, and reconstruct the funerary practices by combining FTIR-ATR data with carbon and oxygen isotope ratios on cremated bones. The results date the cemetery to the end of the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age, with a sporadic occupation in the fourth century BC. Strontium isotopes and concentrations show the analysed individuals buried at San Valentino were a local community that exploited nearby food resources. Interestingly, variations in cremation conditions were detected between San Valentino and the contemporary sites of Velzeke, Blicquy, Grand Bois, and Herstal, located in Belgium, by using FTIR-ATR and carbon and oxygen isotope data. This multi-proxy approach applied to the study of cremated human remains can open new research possibilities, being potentially extendable to the study of many pre- and proto-historic and historic communities that practised cremation. Objective: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a prevalent health condition worldwide. Several therapeutic interventions aim to improve CLBP. Pain Neuroscience Education (PNE) helps patients better understand their pain from biological and physiological perspectives, which clinicians use to reduce pain and disability in patients with chronic musculoskeletal conditions. Neuromuscular exercises (NMS) are also treatments adopted in CLBP. This study will investigate whether PNE combined with an NMS program improves pain, functional and psychological outcomes more than NMS alone in patients with CLBP. Methods: In this single-blind randomized controlled trial, 60 patients (male and female; age range, 30–60 years) diagnosed with CLBP will be randomly assigned to one of the following groups: (1) PNE plus NMS (n = 30; 24 sessions of PNE plus NMS in a total of 8 weeks, 3 each week), and (2) NMS alone (n = 30; 24 sessions of NMS sessions in a total of 8 weeks, 3 each week). Outcome assessors will be blinded to the group allocation. The primary outcome will be pain. Secondary outcomes will be disability, fear-avoidance beliefs about work and physical activity, self-efficacy, exercise anxiety, and kinesiophobia. Outcomes will be assessed at baseline, after 8 weeks of intervention, and 6 months post-intervention. Discussion: The findings of this RCT will help shed light on new treatment strategies to address the biopsychosocial dimensions of CLBP. The study protocol will be conducted in a clinical setting, offering the opportunity for future implementation in healthcare systems. Moreover, it will help clarify whether a combined treatment (PNE with NMS) is more effective than NMS alone for improving pain, functional and psychological outcomes in CLBP. Research and curriculum development on quantum information science is a novel but technologically and socially significant challenge for physics education. While the debate is open on the core content, the approaches, and the strategies for addressing the need of effective instruction on the subject-matter, some indications have begun to emerge. Among them, the importance of an earlier start of education and of helping students develop not only a theoretical knowledge, but also high-level experimental skills including ideal design and conduction of experiments. Such skills are challenging to attain in existing traditional programs and may be considered inaccessible at introductory level because of the difficulties connected with qubit implementations. Here we present the design process, the structure, and a preliminary evaluation of a course for secondary school that is aimed to promote the building of a basic but integrated understanding of quantum information science, including experimental design and lab activities. The course was developed within the model of educational reconstruction, and embedded into a conceptual change framework in physics and computation. The encoding of polarization and which-path information of a photon is used to engage students in the development of a global model of logical encoding and processing, in ideal experimental design of gates and circuits, and in their implementation on the optical bench. Data show the effectiveness of the course in promoting student engagement in the modelling of gates in different encodings, in fostering an understanding of the computational role of physical setups, and a positive attitude and interest towards quantum computation and innovative teaching methods. For this purpose, stibine catalysts were equipped with a biotin derivative and combined with streptavidin mutants to identify an efficient transfer hydrogenation catalyst for the reduction of a fluorogenic quinoline substrate. Increased catalytic activity from wild‐type streptavidin to the best mutants coincides with the depth of the σ hole on the Sb(V) center, and the emergence of saturation kinetic behavior. Michaelis–Menten analysis reveals transition‐state recognition in the low micromolar range, more than three orders of magnitude stronger than the millimolar substrate recognition. Carboxylates preferred by the best mutants contribute to transition‐state recognition by hydrogen‐bonded ion pairing and anion‐π interactions with the emerging pyridinium product. It has been shown recently, without an explanation of the possible molecular mechanisms involved, that 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazinepropanesulphonic (EPPS) acid effectively protects from the neurotoxicity induced by oligomers and plaques formed by the protein amyloid-β protein. Here we report the same protective effect, obtained in vitro (HT22-diff cell line) and ex vivo (hippocampal slices) models, against amyloid neurotoxicity induced by oligomers of salmon Calcitonin (sCT), which has been shown to be a good model for the study of neurodegenerative diseases. Based on biophysical studies focusing on the protein aggregation kinetic and the interaction of the aggregates with model membranes, we propose a possible molecular mechanism underlying the protective effects. Taken together, our results indicate that EPPS is able to counteract the direct association (primary aggregation) of harmless low-molecular weight aggregates (dimers and trimers) or their aggregation catalysed by surfaces present in the solution (secondary aggregation). Thus, EPPS stabilizes harmless aggregates and hinders the formation of toxic and metastable prefibrillar oligomers. Overall, our data demonstrate that EPPS is an excellent drug candidate for the treatment of neurodegeneration due to misfolded proteins, such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease. We present new deep, wide-field imaging data from the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) in g and r bands from the Smallest Scale of Hierarchy Survey (SSH) that reveal previously undetected tidal features and stellar streams in the outskirts of six dwarf irregular galaxies (NGC 5238, UGC 6456, UGC 6541, UGC 7605, UGC 8638, and UGC 8760) with stellar masses in the range 1.2 × 107 M⊙ to 1.4 × 108 M⊙. The six dwarfs are located 1-2 Mpc away from large galaxies, which implies that the observed distortions are unlikely to be due to tidal effects from a nearby, massive companion. At the distances of ~3-4 Mpc at which the dwarfs lie, the identified tidal features are all resolved into individual stars in the LBT images and appear to consist of a population older than 1–2 Gyr. This excludes the possibility that they result from irregular and asymmetric star formation episodes that are common in gas-rich dwarf galaxies. The most plausible explanation is that we witness the hierarchical merging assembly of these dwarfs with their satellite populations. This scenario is also supported by the peculiar morphology and disturbed velocity field of their HI component. From the SSH sample, we estimate that a fraction of ~13% of the late-type dwarfs show signs of merging with satellites. The most metal-poor stars (e.g., [Fe/H] ≤ –2.5) are the ancient fossils from the early assembly epoch of our Galaxy. They very likely formed before the the thick disk. Recent studies have shown that a non-negligible fraction of them have prograde planar orbits, which means that their origin is a puzzle. It has been suggested that a later-formed rotating bar could have driven these old stars from the inner Galaxy outward and transformed their orbits so that they became more dominated by rotation. However, it is unclear whether this mechanism can explain these stars as observed in the solar neighborhood. We explore whether this scenario is feasible by tracing these stars backward in an axisymmetric Milky Way potential with a bar as perturber. We integrated their orbits backward for 6 Gyr under two bar models: one model with a constant pattern speed, and the other with a decelerating speed. Our experiments show that for the constantly rotating bar model, the stars of interest are little affected by the bar and cannot have been driven from a spheroidal inner Milky Way to their current orbits. In the extreme case of a decelerating bar, some of the very metal-poor stars on planar and prograde orbits can be brought from the inner Milky Way, but ∼90% of them were nevertheless already dominated by rotation (Jϕ ≥ 1000 km s−1 kpc) 6 Gyr ago. The chance that these stars started with spheroid-like orbits with low rotation (Jϕ ≲ 600 km s−1 kpc) is very low (< 3%). We therefore conclude that within the solar neighborhood, the bar is unlikely to have shepherded a significant fraction of spheroid stars in the inner Galaxy to produce the overdensity of stars on prograde planar orbits that is observed today. This study analysed basidiomycetous yeasts isolated from the phylloplane of crops and spontaneous plants in Italian agroecosystems. A total of 25 species belonging to 17 genera were recognized by analysing 83 isolates from vineyards and orchards, that are not treated with synthetic fungicides, and adjacent natural areas. Rhodotorula graminis and Filobasidium magnum were the most frequent species but 13 others were represented by a single isolate (e.g., Buckleyzyma salicina, Pseudozyma prolifica, and Moniliella megachiliensis). Preliminary analysis of (GTG)5-PCR fingerprinting revealed high genetic intraspecific heterogeneity. All isolates were characterized by their production of extracellular hydrolytic enzymes and their sensitivity to six commercial fungicides used in Italy. The isolates displayed great variability in these phenotypic traits, which play an important role in the survival of yeast populations in agroecosystems. Most of them exhibited lipolytic, proteolytic, β-glucosidase and pectinolytic activities, but only three (F. magnum, Kwoniella mangroviensis and Ps. prolifica) also had cellulolytic and amylolytic activity. Most isolates were sensitive to four fungicides, and one R. graminis isolate was resistant to all six. This heterogeneity was not related to the geographical origin of the isolates. The lack of selective factors (i.e. pesticide treatments) in the sampling fields and the presence of adjacent natural areas may have favored the maintenance of an elevated level of strain diversity. This study provides new information on phylloplane basidiomycetous yeasts in agroecosystems and opens the way to further investigations into the impact of agricultural practices on the microbial diversity of these natural habitats.
