Gas injection is a well-known method for enhancing oil recovery (EOR). The utilization of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2) or flue gas, offers the dual advantage of reducing greenhouse gas emissions while potentially enhancing the sweep efficiency in oil recovery. Nevertheless, one of the notable challenges encountered when using these gases is the precipitation and deposition of asphaltenes, leading to formation damage and a decrease in reservoir permeability, particularly in the case of light oil reservoirs. In this study, CO2 and flue gas were injected into an elongated core sample comprising four individual core plugs under reservoir conditions to displace the light live oil. The recovery factor and asphaltene deposition along the core holder were assessed and compared as two crucial parameters within the gas injection scenario. Our results indicate a significantly higher recovery factor of 86% achieved with CO2 injection compared to 36% with flue gas injection, attributable to differences in their interfacial tension and miscibility. However, the CO2 injection method exhibits more pronounced formation damage. Individual assessment of each core plug reveals that permeability impairment is most acute in the initial two core plugs, situated closer to the injection face of the extended core. These findings enhance our understanding of the mechanisms contributing to permeability impairment resulting from asphaltene deposition during CO2 and flue gas injection for EOR. This study investigated the effect of solubility of amphiphilic compounds of acidic crude oil in water on the surface and interfacial tension (IFT) with NaCl, MgCl2, CaCl2, and Na2SO4 salts. Accordingly, distilled water, along with the salts mentioned in zero ionic strength up to 2 mol were put in contact with crude oil to become saturated with amphiphilic compounds. The effects of these compounds were investigated on the properties of contact water by pH, total organic carbon (TOC), FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), water‐air surface tension (ST), and water‐n‐decane IFT tests. The results showed that some of the organic components of crude oil, especially acidic and basic compounds, are present or soluble in water, which have a significant effect on reducing the surface and IFT. The IFT reduction of water‐n‐decane was greater than the water‐air ST system. Also, the observations showed that for both NaCl and Na2SO4 salt water, with increasing ionic strength of water, there was an optimum salinity within the range of 0.1‐0.25 mol/L for both salts with the amount of surface and IFT minimized at this point. In the other two salts, this point was delayed upon elevation of ionic strength and was observed at high salinity. In this case, divalent cations reduce tension rate compared to monovalent cations. Due to solubility of acidic and basic groups in water, pH of salt water illustrates an acidic trend. Results of the FTIR test confirmed solubility of these compounds as well. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Free fall gravity drainage is the most effective mechanism in gas invaded zone of fractured reservoirs. Although several analytical models have been proposed to characterize this mechanism, most of them suffer from inadequate reality, such as neglecting capillary pressure. In this study, a new analytical model was proposed to predict the oil recovery versus time for a homogeneous matrix block under a free fall gravity drainage mechanism. Considering the effect of viscous, gravity as well as capillary forces, the model was developed. This model is applicable to different conditions of gravity and capillary force, as well as when both forces are active. Along with core scale experimental data available in the literature, a series of micro model experiments was also conducted and used to check the model's validity. In addition, a synthetic computer model was constructed and used for further model validation. Results showed that the suggested model predicts the physics of the gravity drainage mechanism very well. The results of this work can be helpful to develop a new transfer function for gravity drainage process modeling in fractured reservoir. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
