Temperature is one of the key parameters to determine the structures and properties of polymers during processing, but the effect of processing temperature on similar-structured polymer blends has rarely been reported. In this work, a linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE)/ethylene-octene copolymer (EOC) blend with similar-structured components was chosen as a model system to study the effect of processing temperature (including compounding temperature and molding temperature) on its crystallization, phase morphology, and tensile behavior. It was found that the blends presented evenly distributed rubbery domains at lower processing temperatures, whereas a special, EOC-rich phase domain consisting of a less stable crystalline phase and a rubbery phase was observed at higher processing temperatures. The phase morphology was mainly determined by the final processing temperature, which had a major effect on the yield stress of the material. This work not only reports novel results on processing-structure-performance relations of similar-structured blends but can also guide the design and production of LLDPE-based products with tailored properties. Blending polyethylene with thermoplastic polyolefin elastomers (TPOs) is a promising way to manipulate its structures and tailor its properties. Herein, three TPOs, i.e., two ethylene–octene copolymers (EOCs) and an olefin block copolymer (OBC) with different structures, were used to comparatively investigate the miscibility, crystallization, and phase behavior of their blends with a linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE). It was found that large differences occurred in the crystallization and phase behaviors of the blends due to the different extent of similarity in the molecular structure between the TPO and the LLDPE matrix. In particular, a unique segregated phase morphology comprised a less stable crystalline phase and a rubbery phase was found in an LLDPE/EOC blend. The tensile performance and elasticity of the blends were also studied and correlated with the structures of the blends. This work not only provides novel results on the miscibility and phase behavior of the similar-structured LLDPE/TPO blends, but can also guide the design of LLDPE-based products with tailored performances. Gecko‐inspired microfibrillar adhesives have achieved great progress in microstructure design and adhesion improvement over the past two decades. Space applications nowadays show great interest in this material for the characteristics of reversible adhesion and universal van der Waals interactions. However, the impact of harsh environment of space on the performance of microfibrillar adhesives, especially the extreme low temperature, is rarely addressed. Herein, microfibrillar adhesives fabricated by phenyl containing polydimethylsiloxane (p‐PDMS) elastomers with superior low‐temperature reversible adhesion is proposed. p‐PDMS elastomers are synthesized through one‐pot anionic ring‐opening copolymerization, and the resulting elastomers become non‐crystallizable with excellent low‐temperature elasticity. Low‐temperature adhesion tests demonstrate that the adhesion strength of microfibrillar adhesives fabricated by p‐PDMS elastomers can be well maintained to as low as −120 °C. In contrast, the adhesion strength of pure PDMS microfibrillar adhesive reduces more than 50% below its crystallization temperature. The low‐temperature cyclic adhesion tests further demonstrate that p‐PDMS microfibrillar adhesives exhibit superior reversible adhesion compared to that of PDMS microfibrillar adhesives, owing to the sustainable conformal contact and even distribution of loads over repeated cycles. A series of thioether cross-linked membranes based on sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone)s containing propenyl groups were prepared to solve the problem of high methanol permeability for proton electrolyte membrane in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). For this purpose, 4,4′-thiobisbenzenethiol was selected as cross-linker, and the cross-linked structure was formed via thiol-ene click chemical reaction between propenyl and thiol groups. Compared with pristine membrane, the thioether cross-linked membranes exhibited improved mechanical properties and dimensional stabilities. As the cross-linker increased, the swelling ratio decreased from 11.01% to 8.64% at 20°C and from 15.18% to 10.69% at 80°C. Furthermore, the modified membranes exhibited reduced methanol permeability coefficients (down to 4.03 × 10−7 cm2 s−1), which was nearly half of the pristine membrane (7.66 × 10−7 cm2 s−1). Due to the thioether units, the cross-linked membranes showed enhanced oxidative stabilities, and the longest elapsed time in Fenton’s reagent was 225 min, which was 2.5 times longer than that of pristine polymeric membrane. Although the proton conductivity decreased upon the addition of cross-linker agent, the selectivity value increased due to the lower methanol permeability. ABSTRACT Silica is the most widely-used filler to reinforce liquid silicone rubber (LSR), but the high viscosity of LSR/silica suspension significantly limits its processing flexibility. To balance the processibility and reinforcing efficiency of LSR/silica systems, two kinds of enols (propenol and 1-undecylenyl alcohol) and a saturated alcohol (1-undecylic alcohol) were employed to modify the silica surface. Various rheological tests were carried out to investigate the processibility as well as filler networking and crosslinking processes of the modified systems. Tensile tests were also adopted to verify the reinforcing effect. It was found that surface modification of silica by 1-undecylenyl alcohol could significantly reduce the viscosity of its suspension with LSR. Meanwhile, the mechanical strength of LSR could be largely enhanced by six times with 10 wt % modified silica. Two kinds of glass fibers with round (RdGF) and rectangle cross-sections (RcGF) were used to reinforce polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), respectively. In this way, the effect of fiber cross-section shape on rheological and mechanical properties of the composites was studied for the first time. Results showed that the viscosity of the composites reinforced with RcGF was much lower than that of RdGF composites, owing to their higher sensitivity to flow. As a result, PPS/RcGF composites could be injection-molded at high fiber contents. Moreover, RcGF showed a better reinforcing effect on mechanical properties of PPS. So the use of RcGF could better balance the contradiction between processability and reinforcing effect for glass fiber-reinforced composites. Various characterizations were carried out to reveal the reinforcing mechanism. To improve the safety of cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX) particles, a novel strategy was developed for the fabrication of graphene oxide encapsulated HMX (HMX@GO) by electrostatic self-assembly between graphene oxide and HMX particles. The prepared samples were characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photon spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry and water contact angle tests. The results revealed that GO sheets were coated densely and homogeneously on the HMX particles in a HMX@GO composite at a low GO content of about 0.23 wt %. Compared with that of raw HMX, the impact sensitivity of the HMX@GO composite decreased from 100 % to 30 %, and the 50 % probability of required ignition energy (E50) in the electrostatic spark sensitivity test increased from 0.66 J for HMX to 1.12 J for the HMX@GO composite, suggesting that the electrostatically self-assembled GO coating layer could obviously enhance the safety of HMX. Bioresource natural sisal fiber ( SF) was used to prepare single fiber-reinforced isotactic polypropylene ( iPP) composites. Three kinds of interfacial crystalline morphologies, spherulites, medium nuclei density transcrystallinity ( MD-TC) and high nuclei density transcrystallinity ( HD-TC), were obtained in the single fiber-reinforced composites by implementing quiescent or dynamic shear-enhanced crystallization and by modulating the compatibility interaction between SF and iPP. The development of interfacial shear strength ( IFSS) during the interfacial crystallization process was demonstrated for the first time using a combination of single-fiber fragmentation testing and optical microscope observation. A close correlation between IFSS and morphological characteristics of interfacial crystallization was well elucidated. The increases in IFSS were very different for spherulitic, MD-TC and HD-TC morphologies. The highest IFSS obtained was 28 MPa, after the formation of HD-TC, which was about 62% of the tensile strength of neat iPP (45 MPa). Damping materials are used to control mechanical vibrations, and piezoelectric damping composite is a very promising material due to its unique mechanism. In this study, a potential piezoelectric damping composite was developed by simply melt mixing poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with small amounts of organic modified montmorillonite (OMMT) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The piezoelectric, mechanical and electrical properties were investigated using a dynamic mechanical analyser, direct current electrical resistivity measurements, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and the direct quasi-static d33 piezoelectric coefficient method. It was found that the damping property of PVDF can be greatly improved by adding both MWCNTs and OMMT, and the composite containing 1.9 wt% of MWCNTs and 3 wt% of OMMT showed the best damping property. A model and an approximate calculation were applied to explain the improved damping property. Moreover, similar mechanical properties of PVDF composites were observed in the tensile testing and dynamic mechanical analyser measurements. As part of a continuous effort to develop high performance isotactic polypropylene (iPP) based on β-form crystalline and morphological change induced by rare earth nucleator (WBG), various WBG contents (from 0.025 to 1.0 wt%) were adopted to prepare β-nucleated iPP at a fixed final molten temperature (240°C) in this study. The crystallinity, polymorphic composition, and crystalline morphology were inspected in detail by a series of crystallographic characterizations, including calorimeter, X-ray diffraction, polarized light microscopy (PLM), and electron microscopy. Furthermore, the self-organization and re-crystallization behavior of β-nucleating agent occurred during cooling was characterized by rheometry. Finally, the dependence of mechanical properties, including tensile strength, elongation at break, and impact strength, on WBG content was discussed based on the variations in β-form content and crystalline morphology. Interestingly, it is found that while the WBG content is below 0.1 wt%, the toughness of β-nucleated iPP increases with increase in WBG content due to additional β-form content; as the WBG content is in range of 0.1-0.5 wt%, the toughness increases at a lower rate with increase in WBG content due to β-crystalline morphological change. However, a decrease in toughness is observed while nucleator content is above 0.5 wt% as WBG remains undissolved in iPP upon the adopted processing conditions. The inside cover picture shows the overall preparation of HMX@GO composite and the SEM images of HMX and HMX@GO composites. The preparation involves two steps: 1) HMX surface was modified by APS to obtain APS‐modified HMX particles (s‐HMX). 2) By adopting appropriate pH values, the surfaces of s‐HMX particles and GO were supposed to be oppositely charged. So HMX@GO composite could be fabricated via the electrostatic interaction between positively charged s‐HMX and negatively charged GO in aqueous suspension. The SEM images shows that the surface of HMX particles is smooth with some groove defects on micron scale, and the distribution of the defects is uniform. However, after the assembly between s‐HMX and GO, the surface of HMX@GO composite particles is well coated with a compact wrinkled layer.
