The link between a student's math fluency and their success in general chemistry has been thoroughly documented in the literature. One diagnostic instrument that can be used to assess a student's arithmetic skills is the Math-Up Skills Test (MUST), a 20-question, free-response math test completed in 15 min. The MUST instrument assesses the student's ability to conduct mathematical operations, including multiplication, division, fraction simplification, logarithms/exponents, and symbol manipulation without the aid of a calculator. In our study, we looked at how score changes per MUST question are affected by an early online math review implemented in a general chemistry class versus the control group that had an early online chemistry review across students of varying logical ability as measured by the online Test of Logical Thinking (TOLT). The Math Group significantly improved on ten questions involving all five types of mathematical operations, including one question in symbol manipulation involving balancing equations. The control Chemistry Group only increased on three questions involving faction simplification and logarithms/exponents beyond the two symbol manipulation questions on balancing equations, which were covered in their review of matter. As a function of logic ability, middle TOLT students benefited the most from the math intervention, as evidenced by a greater number of improved MUST questions post-treatment for that group compared to those for the low and high TOLT groups. Identification of item types affected by the math treatment could help instructors identify key arithmetic topics crucial to a student's performance, among many other factors, in first-semester general chemistry. Students come into the classroom with a variety of background knowledge. Therefore, it is imperative that educators are able to help all students, regardless of their familiarity with the content. Since it can be challenging for some large enrollment classes to schedule recitation classes after lectures due to logistical constraints, this study attempts to determine if there are differences in performance based on when content is introduced first, recitation or lecture. This study found that students who were introduced to content in recitation before a lecture typically scored statistically higher across three mid-term exams, in a first-term general chemistry course. This difference in performance suggests that students who are introduced to content in recitation, versus simply hearing about a topic in a lecture, might get more out of the lecture, thus leading to higher performance on exams. Students who are introduced to topics that are tested by way of definition-based questions or basic calculations benefit from being introduced to this content in recitation before the lecture. However, when introducing more challenging and abstract chemistry topics, our results indicate it may benefit students to be introduced to these topics in the lecture first, so they can begin developing their conceptual understanding in the lecture. Mixed results have been reported on the correlation between clickers and performance. This study investigates the usage of clickers in a voluntary context to answer in-class questions in a General Chemistry class. Scores on an internal chemistry placement exam were used to estimate cognitive ability, as a factor that students can no longer control, and average participation on clicker questions was considered as a behavioral aspect that students are able to change. While placement exam scores and clicker usage do not correlate with each other, both positively correlate with performance (midterm average grades and final course grades) in the cohorts of this study (2017, 2018, and 2019). Independent of placement exam scores, students who answered more clicker questions performed better on midterm exams and had a higher final course grade. Students who obtained course grades of A, B, or C answered more clicker questions on average (68% of questions) than students who earned course grades of D or F (51% of questions). Those who answered more than the average number of the clicker questions were at least 2.6 times more likely to achieve course proficiency. These results suggest that students who choose to engage by answering questions in class (answer correctness not required) are more likely to perform well in general chemistry courses, regardless of cognitive ability. This study examined the relationship between the time students spend on practice problems and their performance on exams in various chemistry topics, considering their demographics. The researchers divided 91 general chemistry students into three groups based on the time allotted for solving intervention questions: Minimum, Average, and Maximum. The results showed that the Minimum and Average time groups benefited almost equally, but the performance of the Maximum time group declined. This suggests that, while additional practice is beneficial, there could be an optimal amount of time that students should spend on each question. Spending too much time on a single question can lead to mental and emotional fatigue, resulting in a decline in performance. Additionally, the researchers noted variations in performance across different chemistry topics and student groups, and they examined the relationship between student demographics and their problem-solving performances. The study provides recommendations for educators, testing services, and online homework systems to improve the effectiveness of chemistry instruction, highlighting the importance of finding the right balance between practice time and student engagement, and suggesting that a uniform approach to practice problems may not be ideal for every student. When General Chemistry at West Point switched from interactive lectures to guided inquiry, it provided an opportunity to examine what was expected of students in classrooms and on assessments. Learning objectives and questions on mid-term exams for four semesters of General Chemistry I (two traditional semesters and two guided inquiry semesters) were analyzed by the Cognitive Process and Knowledge dimensions of Bloom's revised taxonomy. The results of this comparison showed the learning objectives for the guided inquiry semesters had a higher proportion of Conceptual and Understand with a corresponding decrease of Factual, Procedural, Remember and Apply learning objectives. On mid-term exams, the proportion of Remember, Understand, Analyze/Evaluate, Factual, and Conceptual questions increased. We found that guided inquiry learning objectives and mid-term exam questions are more conceptual than traditional courses and may help explain how active learning improves equity in introductory chemistry. A program for writing words (or personal names) by combining chemical element symbols is developed in the context of classroom activity to introduce the periodic table, properties of elements, and periodic trends. We provide multiple examples and possible ideas to improve student engagement and create an inclusive environment in the classroom. Common confusions and mistakes made when learning the periodic table are tabulated and discussed. Research into conventional summative assessment methods, such as written exams, has been extensively documented in the literature. However, as academia evolves in response to changing dynamics, there is a growing demand for more robust summative assessment approaches. Oral exams have emerged as a noteworthy form of summative assessment with intrinsic formative qualities, enabling instructors to delve deeply into students' comprehension within a meaningful learning framework. Considering the constraints imposed by the traditional written examination format during the COVID pandemic, two educators implemented oral assessments in their chemistry courses, one in general chemistry and the other in organic chemistry. This article presents a comprehensive account of their approach, course structure, rubrics, documentation procedures, and the challenges associated with implementing oral exams. Furthermore, the authors offer insights derived from perceived course outcomes, experiences, collaborative efforts, and reflections from this transformative process. This research aimed to analyze the use of the concept of the three levels of chemical representation in eight general chemistry books. It was qualitative research with an evaluative descriptive design. The concepts analyzed included the concepts of ionic, covalent, and metallic bonds. The analysis focused on two main criteria: the use of macroscopic, sub-microscopic, and symbolic levels of representation and the relationship between the three levels. The results of the analysis showed that in the concept of ionic bonding, there were pictures of some salts or reactions for the formation of ionic compounds from their elements at the macroscopic level, explanations at the sub-microscopic level, and models of the arrangement of ions in the ionic crystal lattice for the symbolic level. In the concept of covalent bonds, there were images of gasses or covalent compounds at the macroscopic level, explanations at the sub-microscopic level, and models of electron density shifts at the symbolic level. In the concept of metallic bonds, there were pictures of some metals at the macroscopic level, explanations at the sub-microscopic level, and electron cloud models at the symbolic level. The relationship between the levels of representation was found in five of the eight general chemistry books analyzed. General chemistry books present the relationship between the three levels of representation in images that include energy level diagrams, atomic or ionic arrangement models, reaction equations, and explanations of the molecular level. Student perceptions toward homework assigned in general chemistry courses was investigated in this study. The study participants were required to complete homework assignments using two different online systems, ALEKS (adaptive-responsive system) and Sapling (traditional-responsive system). An online survey investigating their general perceptions of homework was administered at the beginning of the semester, and after the participants had completed most of the course, another survey was administered toward the end of the semester exploring their perceptions of both homework systems used in the course. We found that most students believed homework was important to their performance in the course. Our results also showed that students' prior experience in high school science classes had an impact on their perceptions of the amount and the frequency of homework they expected in their general chemistry course. In general, students perceived ALEKS to be a more effective tool for preparing exams, however they also complained that the system was more time-consuming compared to Sapling. For CHEM 1, we did not see a significant change in students' performance based on their homework system preference. In conclusion, students believed homework was a tool to help them learn the subject matter better, and they generally had positive perceptions toward both online homework systems. In this paper we describe an intervention study on the application of the octet rule. This study was conducted at a German University with students in their first- and second undergraduate year. As repeatedly observed by us before, the evaluation of the study confirmed that the students have difficulties with the application of the octet rule in general, but above all for charged molecules. After an intervention, which consisted of a detailed checklist for the application of the octet rule and training opportunities, the students' competences increased, especially for the tasks which included charged molecules. Students' explanations were not as good as expected; the linguistic quality did not increase significantly from pre-to post-test. This is not surprising, because the training of argumentation skills was not part of the intervention. The intended goal, training the application of the octet rule, has been achieved. This research aims to enhance preservice teachers' critical thinking and science process skills using Research-Oriented Collaborative Inquiry Learning (REORCILEA). Sixty-four preservice chemistry teachers attended the General Chemistry course over 8 weeks in an Indonesian public university. In a quasi-experimental design, two intact classes were randomly assigned as the experimental and control groups. The Rubric for Critical Thinking Skills, the Observation Checklist for Science Process Skills, and a semi-structured interview protocol were used as data collection tools. Quantitative data were analyzed using an independent samples t-test and paired samples t-test, while the results of semi-structured interviews were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of the t-test revealed that the REORCILEA was found more effective than the expository teaching model in fostering students' critical thinking and science process skills. The results of the interviews also indicated that experimental group students had a more positive perception of REORCILEA. Regarding these findings, instructors are recommended to apply the REORCILEA model in order to promote students' critical thinking, science process skills, and motivation to learn in STEM-related courses. An investigation was conducted into the common misconceptions in chemical equilibria, adopted by a sample of UK secondary school students. These included the characteristics of a dynamic equilibrium, the nature of the reactants and products at equilibrium, as well as the effect of conditions and catalyst on equilibrium. Suggestions for improved teaching were obtained from the students. These included ensuring a clear and comprehensive delivery of basic principles, more or better use of practical demonstrations where appropriate, and use of practice questions. Further research around these suggestions could investigate the value of consulting students’ views and ideas in addressing their misconceptions, to ultimately improve overall conceptual understanding in instruction. Chemistry educator Alex H. Johnstone is perhaps best known for his insight that chemistry is best explained using macroscopic, submicroscopic, and symbolic perspectives. But in his writings, he stressed a broader thesis, namely that teaching should be guided by scientific research on how the brain learns: cognitive science. Since Johnstone's retirement, science's understanding of learning has progressed rapidly. A surprising discovery has been when solving chemistry problems of any complexity, reasoning does not work: students must apply very-well-memorized facts and algorithms. Following Johnstone's advice, we review recent discoveries of cognitive science research. Instructional strategies are recommended that cognitive studies have shown help students learn chemistry. Many conversations surrounding improvement of large‐enrollment college science, technology, engineering & mathematics (STEM) courses focus primarily (or solely) on changing instructional practices. By reducing dynamic, complex learning environments to collections of teaching methods, we neglect other meaningful parts of a course ecosystem (e.g., curriculum, assessments). Here, we advocate extending STEM education reform conversations beyond "active versus passive learning." We argue communities of researchers and instructors would be better served if what we teach and assess was discussed alongside how we teach. To enable nuanced conversations about the characteristics of learning environments that support students in explaining phenomena, we defined a model of college STEM learning environments which attends to the intellectual work emphasized and rewarded on exams (i.e., assessment emphasis), what is taught in whole‐class meetings (i.e., instructional emphasis), and how those meetings are enacted (i.e., instructional practices). We subsequently characterized three distinct chemistry courses and qualitatively examined the characteristics of chemistry learning environments that effectively supported students in explaining why a beaker of water warms as a white solid dissolves. Furthermore, we quantitatively investigated the extent to which measures of incoming preparation explained variance in students' explanations relative to enrollment in each learning environment. Our findings demonstrate that learning environments that effectively supported learners in explaining dissolution emphasized how and why salts dissolve in‐class and on assessments. Changing teaching methods in an otherwise traditionally structured course (i.e., a course organized by topics that primarily assesses math and recall) did not appear to impact the sophistication of students' explanations. Additionally, we observed that learning environment enrollment explained substantially more of the variance observed in students' explanations than measures of precollege math preparation. This finding suggests that emphasizing and rewarding the construction of causal accounts for phenomena in‐class and on assessments may support more equitable achievement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A primary motivation for this study was to compare student perceptions and performance within a virtual learning environment to the traditional in-person learning experience for the General Chemistry II course taught during a 5-week summer session at Xavier University of Louisiana, a minority serving institution. The authors present quantitative and qualitative analyses including the comparison of student performance on exams during the COVID-19 remote learning experience with exam performance over a 3-year period of conventional in-person instruction. In this article, student grades, survey feedback, and learning outcomes are outlined. This study was performed to assist the faculty in improving and enriching the course content and its delivery, as they coped with the transition to a virtual learning environment imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Supplemental Instruction (SI), a recent innovation in cooperative learning at the college level, emphasizes student achievement through active learning in a peer-led workshop setting, SI evaluation data indicates that students in SI programs earn substantially more quality grades (A, B. C) than their counterparts in non-workshop classes. For colleges and universities that have adopted the model, SI appears to be quite successful in helping students of low and moderate ability, and in reducing the traditionally high am·ition rates in chemistry courses. This presentation tracks SI student performance in general chemistry in a four-year liberal arts university natural science department and will present evaluation data taken from general chemistry. This study aimed to examine the views of preservice science teachers on concept map use in a General Chemistry II class. The study was conducted with 47 preservice science teachers. In the study, an interview form grounded on determining their views on concept maps and comprised of open-ended questions, was used as the data collection tool. In analysis of the data acquired, content analysis was performed. As a result of the analysis of the data, the preservice teachers expressed positive views on concept map use. They stated that it might contribute to their learning and increase the permanence of the knowledge learned. Furthermore, they reported that they liked creating concept maps and among the concept map types they usually chose to create hierarchical concept maps. Most of the preservice teachers stated that they had to know the subject related to the concept map very well to create concept maps more easily, otherwise they might have a difficulty in the concept map creation process and thus concept maps should generally be used after a lecture. In addition the preservice teachers stated that they intended to use concept maps in their teaching experience. As a result, before concept maps are used in teaching, it is recommended to inform students about the creation of concept maps, to use them for re-purpose in teaching activities, and to include activities containing concept maps in textbooks. Objective: The application of molecular graphics software as a simple and free alternative to molecular model sets for introductory-level chemistry learners is presented. Results: Based on either Avogadro or IQmol, we proposed four sets of tasks for students, building basic molecular geometries, visualizing orbitals and densities, predicting polarity of molecules and matching 3D structures with bond-line structures. These topics are typically covered in general chemistry for first-year undergraduate students. Detailed step-by-step procedures are provided for all tasks for both programs so that instructors and students can adopt one of the two programs in their teaching and learning as an alternative to molecular model sets. Background: Engagement with particle-level simulations can help students visualize the motion and interactions of gas particles, thus helping them develop a more scientifically accurate mental model. Such engagement outside of class prior to formal instruction can help meet the needs of students from diverse backgrounds and provide instructors with a common experience upon which to build with further instruction. Yet, even with well-designed scaffolds, students may not attend to the most salient aspects of the simulation. In this case, a screencast where an instructor provides narrated use of the simulation and points students towards the important observations may provide additional benefits. This study, which is part of the larger ChemSims project, investigates the use of simulations and screencasts to support students' developing understanding of gas properties by examining student learning gains. Results: This study indicates that both students manipulating the simulation on their own and those observing a screencast exhibited significant learning gains from pre- to post-assessment. However, students who observed the screencast were more than twice as likely to transition from a macroscopic explanation to a particle-level explanation of gas behavior in answering matched pre- and post-test questions. Eye-tracking studies indicated very similar viewing and usage patterns for both groups of students overall, including when using the simulation to answer follow-up questions. Conclusion: Significant learning gains by both groups across all learning objectives indicate that either scaffolded screencast or simulation assignments can be used to support student understanding of gas particle behavior and serve as a first experience upon which to build subsequent instruction. There is some indication that the initial use of the screencast may better help students build correct mental models of gas particle behavior. Further, for this simulation, watching the instructor manipulate the simulation in the screencast allowed students to subsequently use the simulation on their own at a level comparable to those students who had manipulated the simulation on their own throughout the assignment, suggesting that the screencast students were not disadvantaged by not initially manipulating the simulation on their own. Arithmetic skills are without a doubt integral to a student's success or failure in first-semester general chemistry. The MUST (Math-Up Skills Test) is a powerful tool for assessing a student's arithmetic logic and therefore serves as a great predictor for at-risk students. Early math reviews at the start of the semester are thought to help students develop or refresh the necessary skills needed for success in general chemistry. However, the improvement that students gain from such math reviews is yet to be quantitatively assessed. In this study, a math intervention was given to students in the second week of the fall semester. The MUST was administered to the students before and after the 1-week intervention to determine if the students have indeed improved their arithmetic skills. A control group had a similar design except their intervention which was a general chemistry review. The math intervention group had a significant gain in the MUST scores over the gain for students whose intervention was the chemistry review. Students were grouped by their reasoning ability, as measured by the Test of Logical Thinking (TOLT). Students with high or low reasoning abilities did not differ in their MUST gain by intervention; however, students of average logic abilities who also had the math intervention had significantly higher gains than those in the chemistry intervention. Although 33% of a student's final course average could be accounted for by his/her score on the second administration of the MUST, it was not possible to expect any significant difference in final course averages by intervention, since all subjects were allowed to do both reviews after the study data was collected. The aim of this paper was to investigate the effect of the use of science, technology, and society (STS) issues through flipped and traditional learning environments on students' motivation to learn chemistry as well as their chemical literacy (CL). Two freshman engineering classes totaling 89 students taught by the same instructor enrolled in a general chemistry course at a university were the sample of the study. The study had one intervention and one comparison group (CG); the groups were randomly assigned. The intervention group engaged in the STS issues through flipped learning environment while the CG engaged in the STS issues in a traditional setting. A motivation questionnaire was administered to the groups at the beginning and at the end of the treatment; in addition, CL items were administered at the end of semester. The treatment took one semester. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to compare groups on pre-test scores; then, multivariate analysis of covariance was used to reveal the effect of treatments on motivation, its factors, and CL. The results indicated that utilizing STS issues through the flipped learning environment was superior to traditional STS instruction on increasing students' overall motivation score, intrinsic motivation, and relevance of chemistry. No significant difference was observed in CL scores. Further studies are suggested to investigate the impact of flipped STS interventions on higher-order thinking skills including socio-scientific reasoning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The goal of this study was to investigate the timing of online homework completion and its effects on student performance. Data was collected from two large, first-semester general chemistry sections at a southwestern university. Specifically, this study aims to explore the link between when students complete their homework relative to the date the material was covered in lecture and student performance in that class. Topics covered in the study included VSEPR, Lewis structures, and molecular geometry. Performance was measured by different variables, namely in-class clicker scores (short-term) and exam grade (long-term). Students were divided into three groups: students who completed the relevant homework within 2 days after the lecture (before the next lecture), those who completed the homework 2 to 4 days after the lecture, and students who completed the homework more than 4 days after the material was covered in lecture. The study also took into consideration student reasoning abilities, as measured by the Test of Logical Thinking (TOLT), with a focus on at-risk students (low TOLT students). A student-choice model course redesign was used to counteract a large increase in student enrollment, improve the quality of instruction, and preserve student success. This model is an instructional technique that allows students to choose how to engage in a course. Using this model in a first-semester college-level general chemistry course, online options were created to augment the traditional face-to-face course. The traditional lecture time was reduced from 3 to 2 h per week while the traditional recitation time was increased from 1 to 2 h per week. The recitation component was also transitioned from a supplemental lecture session into a problem-solving active-learning component. A mandatory rotation between face-to-face and online options at the start of the semester was necessary to assist students in making an informed choice about what options best fit their needs. Pre- and post-redesign student performance data (2008–2016) and post-redesign student enrollment data (2012–2016) were evaluated. "Swift fly the years", wrote Alexander Pope. I, for one, feel that 2018, my first full year as Editor‐in‐Chief of Chemistry—A European Journal, flew swiftly indeed. Looking back, the editorial team has accomplished a lot in 2018: We published nearly 2400 papers, more than 200 of which were Reviews, Minireviews or Concepts. Background: Improving students competence to provide appropriate knowledge and skills to deal with professional works becomes a challange in education nowdays. Objectives: This research is aimed to develop and implement an inovative learning material to be used as learning media in the teaching and learning activities to improve students' competence on chemistry. Materials and Methods: The procedures consist of the development and standardization of an innovative learning material with tasks instructions, preparation of research instruments of questionnaire and evaluation tests and implementation of an innovative learning material for teaching and learning activities in the class. Relevant contextual examples, laboratory works, students' activities, media and multimedia and hyperlink to trustworthy websites were integrated into a set of chemistry material to achieve innovative learning material. The instruction for students tasks was also included into the learning package to guide the students to achieve learning goal. Results and Conclusion: Set of learning package has been implemented as learning media in the experimental class on the teaching of chemistry. Compared to control class that used the existing textbook, students' performance in the experimental class was higher than that in control class. An innovative leaning package was discovered to be effective to guide the students to learn chemistry independently. The learning facilities integrated in the learning material help the students to understand chemistry concepts easily. The students enthusiastic to learn chemistry and familiar to use scientific documents to complete the given tasks, as well as having improved ability to write and organize their assignments. Introductory or gateway science courses often prove challenging for many community college students. At a Hispanic Serving Community College like Bronx Community College (BCC), many students abandon majors in science because they are unable to successfully complete the introductory science course requirements for their majors. To address this challenge we implemented an Accelerated Sequence Program (ASP). This paper evaluates the merits and functionality of the intensive ASP platform, which entailed combining the Chemistry 02 (CHM02) and chemistry17 (CHM17) courses offered by the Chemistry Department of Bronx Community College (BCC) in an accelerated one-semester sequence. This paper enumerates the program's impact on student performance and retention. It also indicates that the students enrolled in the remedial CHM02 ASP sections achieved the greatest benefit from the introduction of ASP to the Chemistry Department of BCC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As an organization, it provides an independent and authoritative voice on all matters relating to chemistry, and try to place chemistry at the heart of policy in Europe. Particularly, EuChemS has fostered growth in its young members through the European Young Chemists′ Network. General Chemistry is a high impact course at Benedictine University where a large enrollment of ~250 students each year, coupled with low pass rates of a particularly vulnerable student population from a retention point of view (i.e., first-year college students), make it a strategic course on which to focus innovative pedagogical development. Although our institution is not alone in the challenges that this particular course presents, we have prioritized implementing interventional strategies targeting academically underprepared students to increase their success by providing a preparatory course prior to this gateway course. Focusing on the persistence framework to guide curricular decisions, progress towards aligning our general chemistry curriculum to the academic profile of our students has afforded much higher pass rates than even two years ago. As students increasingly use online chemistry animations and simulations, it is becoming more important to understand how students independently engage with such materials and to develop a set of best practices for students' use of these resources outside of the classroom. Most of the literature examining students' use of animations and simulations has focused on classroom use with some studies suggesting that better outcomes are obtained when students use simulations with minimal guidance while others indicate the need for appropriate scaffolding. This study examined differences with respect to (1) student understanding of the concept of dissolution of ionic and covalent compounds in water and (2) student use of electronic resources when students were asked to complete an assignment either by manipulating a simulation on their own or by watching a screencast in which an expert manipulated the same simulation. Comparison of students' pre- and posttest scores, answers to assignment questions, near-transfer follow-up questions, and eye-tracking analysis suggested that students who viewed the screencast gained a better understanding of the dissolving process, including interactions with water at the particulate level, particularly for covalent compounds. Additionally, the eye tracking indicated that there were significant differences in the ways that the different treatment groups (screencast or simulation) used the electronic resources. When implementing innovative teaching techniques, instructors often seek to gauge the success of their methods. Proposing one approach to assessing classroom innovation, this study examines the ability of students' ratings of engagement and instructional practices to predict their learning in a cooperative (team-based) framework. After identifying the factor structures underlying measures of student engagement and instructional practices, these factors were used as predictors of self-reported student learning in a general chemistry course delivered using a team-based learning approach. Exploratory factor analyses showed a four- factor structure of engagement: teamwork involvement, investment in the learning process, feelings about team-based learning, level of academic challenge; and a three-factor structure of instructional practices: instructional guidance, fostering self-directed learning skills, and cognitive level. Multiple linear regression revealed that feelings about team-based learning and perceptions of instructional guidance had significant effects on learning, beyond other predictors, while controlling gender, GPA, class level, number of credit hours, whether students began college at their current institution, expected highest level of education, racial or ethnic identification, and parental level of education. These results yield insight into student perceptions about team-based learning, and how to measure learning in a team-based learning framework, with implications for how to evaluate innovative instructional methods. A multi-institution collaborative team of Australian chemistry education researchers, teaching a total of over 3000 first year chemistry students annually, has explored a tool for diagnosing students' prior conceptions as they enter tertiary chemistry courses. Five core topics were selected and clusters of diagnostic items were assembled linking related concepts in each topic together. An ordered multiple choice assessment strategy was adopted to enable provision of formative feedback to students through combination of the specific distractors that they chose. Concept items were either sourced from existing research instruments or developed by the project team. The outcome is a diagnostic tool consisting of five topic clusters of five concept items that has been delivered in large introductory chemistry classes at five Australian institutions. Statistical analysis of data has enabled exploration of the composition and validity of the instrument including a comparison between delivery of the complete 25 item instrument with subsets of five items, clustered by topic. This analysis revealed that most items retained their validity when delivered in small clusters. Tensions between the assembly, validation and delivery of diagnostic instruments for the purposes of acquiring robust psychometric research data versus their pragmatic use are considered in this study. Not really for I Chemistry - A European Journal i as the 2018 citations to papers other than Reviews and Articles account for a mere 0.1 % of all citations (still, think of the accuracy once more). In addition to the aforementioned issues, there is a problem that is less often discussed: The overrated accuracy notwithstanding, it is not at all clear what citation counts are actually measuring.[6] Since usually a journal is regarded better than another one with a lower Impact Factor, one would have to assume that the Impact Factor is a direct measure of quality. In the group of ChemPubSoc Europe journals we have observed several times that after rejection and resubmission to a different journal, strangely enough, a lot of references to the rejecting journal were replaced by references to the new journal. So this is my plea: Since the Impact Factor, and similar citation-based metrics, are likely to prevail and will continue to be used for evaluating not only journals but also researchers who publish in them, could you as an author please pay more attention to the citations, bearing in mind their implications.
