In this study, the effect of biochar supported nano‐zero valent iron (nZVI/BC) on anaerobic digestion of sulfate wastewater including methane yield, total volatile fatty acids, COD balance, sulfur balance, variation of iron (Fe2+) and microbial community structure was investigated by a batch‐scale experiment. The results showed that nZVI/BC could effectively maintain the stability of anaerobic digestion even at a high sulfate concentration. At SO42−/COD = 0.1 with 2 g nZVI/BC, the maximum methane yield (Bmax) and maximum methane production rate (Rmax) were obtained with a value of 3940.6648 mL and 553.6266 mL/day, respectively. When the SO42−/COD ratio was increased from 0.1 to 2, the ratio of COD converting to CH4 was decreased from 80.85% to 20.16%, while the ratio of COD used for SO42− reduction was increased from 8.79% to 77.96%. Meanwhile, nZVI/BC could enrich the hydrogentrophic Methanobacterium especially Methanobacterium with an average relative abundance of 75.86%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) are widely used in the construction of drug and gene delivery vectors because of their particular physicochemical properties. Surface modification can not only reduce the cytotoxicity of Fe3O4, but also further improve the biocompatibility and delivery efficiency. In this work, firstly, polydopamine (PDA)-coated Fe3O4 NPs (named Fe3O4@PDA) were prepared by using the self-polymerization characteristics of dopamine in alkaline environment. Then, polyamidoamine (PAMAM) was modified by the Michael addition reaction to prepare water-soluble core—shell magnetic NPs of Fe3O4@PDA@PAMAM, and its potential as gene vector was further evaluated. The results revealed that Fe3O4@PDA@PAMAM had the ability to condense and protect DNA, and showed lower cytotoxicity, higher cell uptake and transfection efficiency than those of PAMAM. A series of new compounds were synthesised by adding azo functional groups and chlorine substituent to the central bent-cores to form a 4-chloro-1,3-dizaophenylene bent-core. The structure, mesogenic properties, and photosensitivity of these compounds were characterised. The results show these synthesised compounds exhibit a broad temperature window up to 63.8°C for nematic phase and the rapid rate of trans – cis photoisomerisation. For instance, at 95°C, compound 4c in nematic phase became an isotropic liquid under UV-irradiation in 3 s and could be restored to nematic under natural visible light in 5 s. Quantum mechanics calculation confirms that using azos instead of esters as the central linkages can effectively reduce the molecular dipole moment, which appears to promote favourable mesogenic and photonic characteristics. Moreover, varying the carbon number in the terminal alkyl chains can alter molecular dipole moment and polarisability anisotropy, which are strongly correlated with the phase transition temperature and temperature range of the nematic phase. These findings suggest that 1) changing azo group position can effectively alter the intermolecular interactions by varying molecular polarity and polarisability; 2) reducing long-range electrostatic interactions can promote favourable mesogenic and possibly photonic properties of azobenzene bent-core liquid crystal. Nematic liquid crystals are promising materials for microwave communication owing to their continuous tunability as dielectrics and wide frequency range selection. However,conventional liquid crystals exhibit large dielectric loss and high freezing point, hindering their research and application in microwave communication. in this paper,14 novel liquid crystal polyphenylene compounds with lateral methyl substitute were synthesised. Their structures were characterized by IR, NMR,MS and the elemental analyses. Their mesogenic properties were analyzed by POM and DSC. The dielectric properties in microwave frequencies(10-35 GHz)of eight target compounds (6a,7b,8a~8e) with LC matrix were obtained by extrapolation and perturbation techniques. The results show that i. fluorinated polyphenylene compounds with lateral methyl generally exhibited low melting points (≤75°C), ii. compounds with isothiocyanate group yielded high birefringence 0.385-0.441, iii. compounds based on quaterphenyl displayed a wide temperature range of nematic phase, and iv. the maximum dielectric loss of compounds 6e,8c,8e are less than 6.51×10-3,which are better than those of using fluorine replace the methyl group derivative. Therefore, the proposed approach can effectively reduce dielectric loss,reduce the melting temperature, improve the dielectric properties of liquid crystal materials for microwave communication.
