A significant share of anthropogenic global warming comes from livestock production. There is debate about whether there can be any role for livestock in a climatically sustainable future; the debate is particularly heated for cows and sheep, largely due to the methane they burp out. However, short-lived gases like methane affect climate in a fundamentally different way than long-lived gases like carbon dioxide. Consequently, climate stabilization does not require zeroing-out cattle herds. But this doesn't mean we can eat our beef and have it (a tolerable climate) too—livestock still contribute to global warming. Preventing or limiting future growth in livestock-related emissions can represent a sensible part of the portfolio of responses to the climate crisis, particularly when carbon dioxide emissions are not on track to reach net zero sufficiently quickly. Alpine skiing has been a popular activity since the 1950s. However, global warming leads to milder weather, melting glaciers, and reduced snowfall which deteriorates possibilities to skiing. The purpose of this paper is to sketch a contemporary history of alpine skiing and environmental awareness in Sweden through the narratives of ten alpine skiers. A temporal and spatial perspective contributes to make changes over time and meaning of places visible. The skiers share a fixed narrative: nature as central for skiing. This is not unproblematic since nature has been more adapted and modified and resulted in a crowded landscape. Nature is a space to be preserved but also as a space to enable skiing. In this constructed landscape, over time snowmaking is reconstructed to being normal, albeit not natural. We model the welfare consequences of mandates that restrict investors to hold firms with net-zero carbon emissions. To qualify for these mandates, value-maximizing firms have to accumulate decarbonization capital. Qualification lowers a firm's required return by its decarbonization investments divided by Tobin's q, that is, the greenium or the dividend yield shareholders forgo to address the global-warming externality. The welfare-maximizing mandate approximates the first-best solution, yielding welfare gains compared to laissez-faire by mitigating the weather disaster risks resulting from carbon emissions. Our model generates optimal transition paths for decarbonization that we use to evaluate proposed net-zero targets. As the climate warms, extended drought and heat events in the United States are driving an increase in acres burned and homes lost to wildfire. The most devastating wildfires happen when dry winds carry embers long distances, start spot fires and ignite homes. Burning homes then become the fuel that ignites other nearby homes, causing mass conflagrations. Today wildfire is largely approached as a problem that can be controlled through vegetation treatments and firefighting, but that strategy has not stopped the loss of homes and even entire communities. However, new observational and analytical tools have given firefighters, governments, and the public a better understanding of wildfire and how to prepare for it. This study investigates the cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment of four acrylic acid production routes. Acrylic acid, an important industrial chemical, is currently produced using fossil fuel-based propylene but it can be sustainably produced from biodiesel derived glycerol through different pathways that involve intermediates such as acrolein, allyl alcohol, or lactic acid. Environmental impacts, including global warming potential, water footprint, acidification, eutrophication, ozone layer depletion, photochemical smog, and human toxicity, are evaluated. Glycerol-based processes exhibit significant environmental impacts mainly due to the energy-intensive production of epichlorohydrin-derived glycerol. The total potential global warming for glycerol-based processes having intermediates allyl alcohol, lactic acid and acrolein, was 1.67 × 105, 1.80 × 105 and 1.34 × 105 kg CO2 eq. FU-1 respectively, with epichlorohydrinderived glycerol, whilst this value was 0.552 × 105 kg CO2 eq. FU-1 for the propylene-based process. However, changing the source of glycerol to purified crude glycerol from the biodiesel industry results in a considerable reduction of the environmental impact. A sensitivity analysis using the two-factor interaction (2FI) model showed that the global warming potential varies from 0.676 × 105 to 1.45 × 105 kg CO2 eq. FU-1 depending on the purification method used to purify crude glycerol and the glycerol content in the crude glycerol. It showed that a vacuum distillation purification process with 50% glycerol content had the least global warming values. This assessment provides insights into environmental performance trade-offs, guiding efforts towards more sustainable acrylic acid production and emphasizing the potential of using by-products from other industries to enhance the sustainability in chemical production processes. Introduction: Jacaranda mimosifolia, native to South America, is a notable ornamental tree widely used in Chinese urban landscaping due to its aesthetic and environmental value. Despite its popularity, the cultivation of J. mimosifolia in China faces challenges, including intermittent failures in various regions. This study assesses the potential distribution of J. mimosifolia in China and its response to climate change, providing insights for its application and promotion. Methods: Using MaxEnt software, we developed an ecological niche model from 218 distribution records and selected 10 environmental variables to predict the tree's distribution under various climate scenarios (SSP126, SSP245, SSP370). Results: Our model demonstrates high predictive accuracy (AUC > 0.90) across scenarios, identifying key factors such as the mean temperature of the coldest quarter (bio11), precipitation of the driest month (bio14), temperature annual range (bio7), and minimum temperature of the coldest month (bio6). Their relative contribution rates were 49.3%, 18.4%, 15.6%, and 2.0%, respectively. The average temperature of the coldest quarter was not lower than 5°C, with the ideal range being 7.38~14.88°C. Currently, J. mimosifolia predominantly thrives in Taiwan, Fujian, Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, Yunnan, and to a lesser extent in the Sichuan Basin, southern Guizhou, Tibet, Hunan, Jiangxi, and Zhejiang province, covering a total area of approximately 122.19×104 km2. Future predictions indicate that under the SSP126 scenario, the most significant contraction occurs between the 2050s and 2070s, with a total change of -1.08×104 km2. Conversely, under the SSP370 scenario, the greatest expansion is observed from the 2030s to the 2050s, amounting to a change of 2.08×104 km2. Suitable area expansion is anticipated in most periods and scenarios, except for SSP126 in the 2070s, SSP245 in the 2050s, and SSP370 in the 2030s and 2070s. The distribution center shifts observed include movements northwestward, southwestward, and eastward with distances ranging from 5.12 km to 18.84 km. These shifts are likely driven by global warming, resulting in movements to higher elevations and latitudes. Discussion: These predictions will provide a solid theoretical foundation for the future application of J. mimosifolia in urban landscaping and serve as a valuable reference for its introduction and cultivation. Case studies from global cities contribute to more focused analyses of global warming challenges and demonstrate the performance and effectiveness of mitigation and adaptation strategies to identify lessons about success at the city scale. The case studies were chosen to demonstrate aspects of the critical messages for action priorities in global warming mitigation and adaptation. This work focuses on best practices and initiatives for mitigation and adaptation approaches from developed and developing economies, including North American cities, European cities, Asian cities, and other global cities worldwide. The case studies were grouped to examine, identify, and emphasize important factors in various areas (e.g., local programs and alliances, governance, stakeholder engagement, community actions, and scientific research) that determined the success of adaptation strategies in various global cities. Many recent studies showcase mitigation approaches, particularly those relating to blue-green infrastructure and nature-based strategies. The case studies selected reflect vulnerable regions and demonstrate how increasing global warming significantly concerns individuals, societies, and their infrastructure. The selected studies include Amsterdam in Netherlands; Singapore, as a city in a garden; Boston in USA; Ahmedabad Heat Action Plan in India, aimed at implementing strategies with the objectives of climate adaptation planning; Copenhagen, as a coastal town, is more susceptible to flooding; Portland, the most progressive city in USA; Hamburg in Germany, one of the biggest harbours in Europe; and the 'Rain City Strategy', in Vancouver, Canada. Mosquito vectors of pathogens (e.g., Aedes, Anopheles, and Culex spp. which transmit dengue, Zika, chikungunya, West Nile, malaria, and others) are of increasing concern for global public health. These vectors are geographically shifting under climate and other anthropogenic changes. As small-bodied ectotherms, mosquitoes are strongly affected by temperature, which causes unimodal responses in mosquito life history traits (e.g., biting rate, adult mortality rate, mosquito development rate, and probability of egg-to-adult survival) that exhibit upper and lower thermal limits and intermediate thermal optima in laboratory studies. However, it remains unknown how mosquito thermal responses measured in laboratory experiments relate to the realized thermal responses of mosquitoes in the field. To address this gap, we leverage thousands of global mosquito occurrences and geospatial satellite data at high spatial resolution to construct machine-learning based species distribution models, from which vector thermal responses are estimated. We apply methods to restrict models to the relevant mosquito activity season and to conduct ecologically plausible spatial background sampling centered around ecoregions for comparison to mosquito occurrence records. We found that thermal minima estimated from laboratory studies were highly correlated with those from the species distributions (r = 0.87). The thermal optima were less strongly correlated (r = 0.69). For most species, we did not detect thermal maxima from their observed distributions so were unable to compare to laboratory-based estimates. The results suggest that laboratory studies have the potential to be highly transportable to predicting lower thermal limits and thermal optima of mosquitoes in the field. At the same time, lab-based models likely capture physiological limits on mosquito persistence at high temperatures that are not apparent from field-based observational studies but may critically determine mosquito responses to climate warming. Our results indicate that lab-based and field-based studies are highly complementary; performing the analyses in concert can help to more comprehensively understand vector response to climate change. Lab studies show that mosquito abundance has a unimodal response to temperature with thermal optima, upper and lower thermal limits. We used a global database of field-collected mosquito occurrences, geospatial environmental covariates, and species distribution models to estimate the relationship between temperature and probability of mosquito occurrence. The gastrointestinal (GI) microbiome of chelonians (testudines) plays an important role in their metabolism, nutrition, and overall health but the GI microbiome of three-toed box turtles (Terrapene carolina triunguis) has yet to be characterized. How the GI microbiome responds to rapidly rising environmental temperatures has also not been studied extensively in ectotherms, specifically chelonians. In this study, twenty (20) T.c.triunguis were split into control and experimental groups. The experimental group experienced 4.5°C increases every two weeks while the control group stayed at a constant ambient temperature (24°C) through the entirety of the experiment. Before each temperature increase, all turtles had cloacal swab samples taken. These samples underwent DNA extraction followed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and microbial community analyses. Differences in diversity at the community level in the controls compared to the experimental groups were not statistically significant, indicating microbiome resilience to rapid temperature changes in T.c.triunguis, although some differentially abundant lineages were identified. Interestingly, an amplicon sequence variant belonging to the Erysipelothrix spp. was exclusively enriched in the highest temperature group relative to controls. Overall, our work suggests that there may be an innate robustness to rapid temperature swings in the microbiome of T.c.triunguis which are native to temperate North America. Despite this resilience, Erysipelothrix spp. was enriched at the highest temperature. Phylogenetic analysis of this amplicon variant showed that it is a close relative of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, a pathogen of zoonotic importance associated with both wildlife and livestock. As a renewable energy source, ocean wind energy plays an important role in addressing challenges such as global energy shortages and climate warming. In the past decade, the offshore wind power industry has developed rapidly. However, its development has also inevitably affected local social, economic and environmental aspects. Therefore, a timely understanding of offshore wind power dynamics development is crucial for its healthy and sustainable development. Based on this, this study designs and develops a more economical, reliable and real-time offshore wind turbine (OWT) extraction method by combining deep learning and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform. The method consists of two main steps. The first part utilizes multiple semantic segmentation models to construct a multi-model detection method to initially detect OWTs. The second part utilizes the GEE cloud computing platform for installation time detection and secondary purification processing of the preliminary results. The results show that the number of global OWTs reached 13,609 by 2023, and the accuracy of the detection results reached 99.93%. China has been the fastest-growing country in offshore wind power in the last decade, from installing only 4 units in 2015 to installing 6,775 units in 2023 and surpassing the UK in 2020 and becoming the country building the most OWTs worldwide. Currently, 85% of the world's OWTs are located in China and European North Sea waters. Additionally, other regions have great potential for offshore wind development. Finally, this study provides the world's most up-to-date and complete OWT dataset, which can provide data support for research on marine ecological and environmental protection, marine spatial planning, and socioeconomic benefits. Dust and high cloud interactions are critical for climate change, primarily due to the dominant roles of high cloud in the greenhouse effect and the continental precipitation. Nonetheless, disentangling the specific impacts of dust from the overlying meteorology influence on high clouds presents great challenges. In this study, we construct a meteorological pattern that successfully reveal the intricate connection between high cloud distribution and atmospheric conditions. Through this strong bounded relationship, we find that dust exhibits notable controls over the facilitation or inhibition of ice particle growth contingent upon the prevailing meteorological fields. More dust can increase precipitation rate and shorten high cloud lifetime particularly under favorable meteorology. These findings underscore the crucial role of dust concentration in mitigating global warming for future climate change. As global warming intensifies, the coupling relationship between negative Indian Ocean Dipole (nIOD) and La Niña has substantially changed. However, the characteristics and mechanisms of these changes are not yet fully understood. Here, we find that the impact of La Niña on nIOD has considerably weakened since 1999, with the frequency of nIOD occurrences during La Niña years plummeting to a mere one‐third of the pre‐1999 levels. This is primarily attributed to the early onset of Indian summer monsoon and the decrease in La Niña intensity, while the effect of variations in Bjerknes feedback is relatively minor. Model simulations suggest that the influence of La Niña on nIOD will continue to weaken under future global warming through similar mechanisms as in the observations, increasing the complexity of air‐sea coupling in the Indian Ocean. The physical processes governing a tropical cyclone's lifecycle are largely understood, but key processes occur at scales below those resolved by global climate models. Increased resolution may help simulate realistic tropical cyclone intensification. We examined fully coupled, global storm‐resolving models run at resolutions in the range 28–2.8 km in the atmosphere and 28–5 km in the ocean. Simulated tropical cyclone activity, peak intensity, intensification rate, and horizontal wind structure are all more realistic at a resolution of ∼5 km compared with coarser resolutions. Rapid intensification, which is absent at typical climate model resolutions, is also captured, and exhibits sensitivity to how, and if, deep convection is parameterized. Additionally, the observed decrease in inner‐core horizontal size with increasing intensification rate is captured at storm‐resolving resolution. These findings highlight the importance of global storm‐resolving models for quantifying risk and understanding the role of intense tropical cyclones in the climate system. Plain Language Summary: Simulating strong tropical storms (i.e., major hurricanes, super typhoons) with climate models is challenging because important processes that act to intensify a storm occur over spatial scales that are too small for global models to capture. Typical models lack sufficient resolution in the atmosphere and ocean, often constrained by computational resources. Recently, in a few models, resolution has increased to a point where each grid cell represents an area of just a few square kilometres, a significant leap of one or two orders of magnitude. We analyzed tropical storms simulated by these state‐of‐the‐art, so‐called storm‐resolving models and found that peak tropical storm intensity and the rate at which storms intensify are both more realistic. These models also simulate the rapid intensification of tropical storms and capture the small eye diameters often seen in the most intense storms. Our work provides evidence that storm‐resolving resolution may help us better understand the role of tropical storms in the climate system and predict their behavior in a warming climate. Horizontal and vertical moisture advection in the lower troposphere of the Arctic under progressing global warming is examined using a large‐scale ensemble model data set. Advection is decomposed into terms related to the basic state of the atmosphere and transient eddies and compared against a non‐warming experiment. During summer, horizontal moisture advection increases mainly by transient eddies advecting moisture from the lower latitudes. During winter, enhanced evaporation due to reduced sea ice becomes a source of moisture diminishing the role of transient eddies moistening the atmosphere. This effect intensifies under extreme global warming, turning the change in total horizontal advection in the lower troposphere negative. Diminished horizontal advection during winter is counteracted by vertical advection accompanied with enhanced evaporation and upper‐level horizontal advection maintaining the increase in column moisture. These results improve our understanding of how the water cycle in the Arctic responds via atmospheric processes under global warming. As global warming progresses, the role or horizontal movement of moisture is taken over by the local process of evaporation and vertical movement of moisture. This research helps us understand how the water cycle in the Arctic changes with severe global warming and improves our knowledge of the atmospheric processes that govern the climate system through various feedbacks. Summary: Rising global temperatures pose a threat to plant immunity, making them more susceptible to diseases. The impact of temperature on plant immunity against biotrophic and hemi‐biotrophic pathogens is well documented, while its effect on necrotrophs remains poorly understood. We venture into the uncharted territory of necrotrophic fungal pathogens in the face of rising temperatures. We discuss the role of the plant hormones salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) in providing resistance to necrotrophs and delve into the temperature sensitivity of the SA pathway. Additionally, we explore the repercussions of increased temperatures on plant susceptibility to necrotrophs. There is a growing interest in the effects of climate warming on olfaction, as temperature may affect this essential sense. In insects, the response of the olfactory system to developmental temperature might be mediated by body size or mass because body size and mass are negatively affected by developmental temperature in most ectotherms. We tested this hypothesis of a mass-mediated effect of developmental temperature on olfaction in the moth Spodoptera littoralis. We measured the olfactory sensitivity of male to female sex pheromone and five plant odors using electroantennography. We compared males reared at an optimal temperature (25 °C with a daily fluctuation of ±5 °C) and at a high temperature (33 ± 5 °C) close to the upper limit of S. littoralis. On average, the olfactory sensitivity of males did not differ between the two developmental temperatures. However, our analyses revealed an interaction between the effects of developmental temperature and body mass on the detection of the six chemicals tested. This interaction is explained by a positive relationship between antennal sensitivity and body mass observed only with the high developmental temperature. Our results show that the effect of developmental temperature may not be detected when organism size is ignored. Plant functional traits (FTs) determine growth, reproduction and survival strategies of plants adapted to their growth environment. Exploring global geographic patterns of FTs, their covariation and their relationships to climate are necessary steps towards better-founded predictions of how global environmental change will affect ecosystem composition. We compile an extensive global dataset for 16 FTs and characterise trait-trait and trait-climate relationships separately within non-woody, woody deciduous and woody evergreen plant groups, using multivariate analysis and generalised additive models (GAMs). Among the six major FTs considered, two dominant trait dimensions—representing plant size and the leaf economics spectrum (LES) respectively—are identified within all three groups. Size traits (plant height, diaspore mass) however are generally higher in warmer climates, while LES traits (leaf mass and nitrogen per area) are higher in drier climates. Larger leaves are associated principally with warmer winters in woody evergreens, but with wetter climates in non-woody plants. GAM-simulated global patterns for all 16 FTs explain up to three-quarters of global trait variation. Global maps obtained by upscaling GAMs are broadly in agreement with iNaturalist citizen-science FT data. This analysis contributes to the foundations for global trait-based ecosystem modelling by demonstrating universal relationships between FTs and climate. By considering differences among herbaceous, deciduous and evergreen plants and how these lead to divergent climatic responses in plant functional traits, the authors have created a comprehensive set of global trait maps. The flaring of gas is a double jeopardy of wasting valuable energy resource and environmental degradation. That had been the experience with the Niger Delta area since 1956 when oil was discovered in commercial quantity in the region. Gas flaring is an active contributor of Green House Gases (GHG) emissions, global warming, climate change crisis and the consequent acid rain, rising temperature and sea level, flooding, agricultural and aquatic food chain disruption. The Niger Delta area as a global spot rich in oil, gas, aquatic and agricultural foods had remained a paradox of plenty, poverty and hunger. In view of this stack reality, it is the concern of this study to determine if zero hunger can be achieved in the area by 2030 and make recommendations that will serve as blue print for national and global actualization SDG 2. The study adopted documentary research method, leveraged on Public–Private Partnership (PPP) and Win–Win Concept as frameworks of interpretation and unveiled that ending gas flaring is associated with inherent economic growth, environmental preservation and sustainable livelihood in and beyond Niger Delta. This study aimed to investigate whether heat stress, as defined by the temperature-humidity index (THI) during the close-up dry period, had any impact on the productive performance, fertility, and immunometabolic blood indices of dairy cows in the subsequent lactation. Lactation performance was associated with increasing THI values on − 21, − 14, and − 7 d before calving resulting in decreased milk yield by about 2.30, 2.60, and 2.90 kg, respectively. The THI on the − 7 d before the calving was negatively associated with fertility parameters such as delayed first estrus postpartum, an elongated calving interval by approximately 32 d, a higher number of services per conception by 1.00, and an elongated artificial insemination service period, days open, and inter-calving period by about 20, 52, and 52 d, respectively. The study found that the immunometabolic blood indices were associated with increasing THI values during the close-up dry period. The study showed that exposing dairy cows to close-up dry period heat stress had negative consequences on performance, fertility, and immunometabolic blood indices in the subsequent lactation. Therefore, it is recommended that herd management and barn microclimate changes be implemented earlier, starting from the late dry period, to mitigate the negative impact of heat stress. The enforcement of a global hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant phase down led to the introduction of hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) as a low Global Warming Potential (GWP) substitute, given their low atmospheric lifetime. However, to this date it is not fully clear the long‐term atmospheric fate of HFOs primary degradation products: trifluoro acetaldehyde (TFE), trifluoro acetyl fluoride (TFF), and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). It particularly concerns the possibility of forming HFC‐23, a potent global warming agent. Although the atmospheric reaction networks of TFE, TFF, and TFA have a fair level of complexity, the relevant atmospheric chemical pathways are well characterized in the literature, enabling a comprehensive hazard assessment of HFC‐23 formation as a secondary HFO breakdown product in diverse scenarios. A lower bound of the HFOs effective GWP in a baseline scenario is found above regulatory thresholds. Global warming has accelerated alpine glacier melting and led to an increased risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). This paper extracted glacial lake boundaries in the Tienshan Mountains of Central Asia from 1990 to 2023, analyzed their spatiotemporal variations and evaluated their risk levels under current and future scenarios. The results show that glacial lakes are predominantly distributed in the Central and Western Tienshan, accounting for 75% of the total number in the Tienshan region. The number and area of glacial lakes increased by 148% (from 1837 to 4557) and 71.83% (from 119.73 to 205.73 km2) during 1990 to 2023, with moraine lake expansion predominating. In the Western Tienshan, the high or very high risk of GLOF is 3–4 times that of other areas. By the middle of the twenty-first century, GLOF risk will continue to increase, especially in the Western Tienshan. In conjunction with the pressing global issue of climate change and the associated concern over global warming, increasing interest has emerged in the exploration of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a resource for the generation of a diverse array of products intended to serve societal needs. This study presents the development of an ATP-free and NAD-balanced in vitro synthetic enzymatic biosystem (ivSEB), which comprises only five cascade thermophilic enzymes, designed for the synthesis of L-malate through CO2 fixation powered by the utilization of D-glucose as a substrate. This designed ivSEB yields two moles of L-malate from one mole of D-glucose and two moles of CO2. Through meticulous refinement of reaction conditions and enzyme loading amounts, this ivSEB has demonstrated its capability to produce 6.85 mM of L-malate via CO2 fixation from an initial 5 mM of D-glucose with a molar product yield of 68.5%, and 2.45 mM of L-lactate as a byproduct. In the pursuit of assessing the industrial feasibility of this ivSEB, the study further subjected the system to the utilization of a high concentration (45.70 mM) of D-glucose. Although this endeavor necessitates additional optimization for enhanced efficiency, the present findings herald the emergence of an alternative avenue for the sustainable production of L-malate through CO2 fixation, thus bearing substantial promise for addressing ecological and industrial imperatives. With the proceeding of global warming and water eutrophication, the phenomenon of green tide has garnered significant societal interest. Consequently, researchers had increasingly focused on the potential applications of green algae biomass, particularly its polysaccharides. The polysaccharide serves as the primary active constituent of green algae and has demonstrated numerous advantageous biological activities, including antioxidant, antiviral, anticoagulant, hypolipidemic and immuno-modulatory activities. The favorable bioavailability and solubility of green algae oligosaccharides are attributed to their low molecular weight. So there has been a growing interest in researching green algae polysaccharides and oligosaccharides for the utilization of marine biological resources. This review summarized the extraction, purification, chemical structure, composition, biological activity, and potential applications prospect of polysaccharides and oligosaccharides derived from green algae. Adaptation of reef-building corals to global warming depends upon standing heritable variation in tolerance traits upon which selection can act. Yet limited knowledge exists on heat-tolerance variation among conspecific individuals separated by metres to hundreds of kilometres. Here, we performed standardized acute heat-stress assays to quantify the thermal tolerance traits of 709 colonies of Acropora spathulata from 13 reefs spanning 1060 km (9.5° latitude) of the Great Barrier Reef. Thermal thresholds for photochemical efficiency and chlorophyll retention varied considerably among individual colonies both among reefs (approximately 6°C) and within reefs (approximately 3°C). Although tolerance rankings of colonies varied between traits, the most heat-tolerant corals (i.e. top 25% of each trait) were found at virtually all reefs, indicating widespread phenotypic variation. Reef-scale environmental predictors explained 12–62% of trait variation. Corals exposed to high thermal averages and recent thermal stress exhibited the greatest photochemical performance, probably reflecting local adaptation and stress pre-acclimatization, and the lowest chlorophyll retention suggesting stress pre-sensitization. Importantly, heat tolerance relative to local summer temperatures was the greatest on higher latitude reefs suggestive of higher adaptive potential. Dengue is an important vector-borne disease occurring globally. Dengue virus (DENV) infection can result in a potentially life-threatening disease. To date, no DENV-specific antiviral treatment is available. Moreover, an equally effective panserotype dengue virus vaccine is not available. Recently, two DENV vaccines, Dengvaxia and Qdenga, were licensed for limited use. However, none of them have been approved in Bangladesh. DENV is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, and global warming caused by climate change favoring Aedes breeding plays an important role in increasing DENV infections in Bangladesh. Dengue is a serious public health concern in Bangladesh. In the year 2023, Bangladesh witnessed its largest dengue outbreak, with the highest number of dengue cases (n  =  321,179) and dengue-related deaths (n  =  1,705) in a single epidemic year. There is an increased risk of severe dengue in individuals with preexisting DENV-specific immunoglobulin G if the individuals become infected with different DENV serotypes. To date, vector control has remained the mainstay for controlling dengue; therefore, an immediate, strengthened, and effective vector control program is critical and should be regularly performed for controlling dengue outbreaks in Bangladesh. In addition, the use of DENV vaccine in curbing dengue epidemics in Bangladesh requires more consideration and judgment by the respective authority of Bangladesh. This review provides perspectives on the control and prevention of dengue outbreaks. We also discuss the challenges of DENV vaccine use to reduce dengue epidemics infection in Bangladesh. A primary driver of deep-ocean mixing is breaking of internal tides generated via interactions of barotropic tides with topography. It is important to understand how the energy conversion from barotropic to internal tides responds to global warming. Here we address this question by applying a linear model of internal tide generation to coupled global climate model simulations under a high carbon emission scenario. The energy conversion to high-mode internal tides is projected to rise by about 8% by the end of the 21st century, whereas the energy conversion to low-mode internal tides remains nearly unchanged. The intensified near-bottom stratification under global warming increases energy conversion into both low and high-mode internal tides. In contrast, the intensified depth-averaged stratification reduces the modal horizontal wavenumber of internal tides, leading to increased (decreased) energy conversion into high (low)- mode internal tides. Our findings imply stronger mixing over rough topography under global warming, which should be properly parameterized in climate models for more accurate projections of future climate changes. The authors use a linear model of internal tide generation and an ensemble of coupled global climate model simulations under a high emission scenario, and find a significant enhancement of energy conversion to high-mode internal tides by the end of the 21st century. Climate warming disproportionately impacts countries in the Global South by increasing extreme heat exposure. However, geographic disparities in adaptation capacity are unclear. Here, we assess global inequality in green spaces, which urban residents critically rely on to mitigate outdoor heat stress. We use remote sensing data to quantify daytime cooling by urban greenery in the warm seasons across the ~500 largest cities globally. We show a striking contrast, with Global South cities having ~70% of the cooling capacity of cities in the Global North (2.5 ± 1.0 °C vs. 3.6 ± 1.7 °C). A similar gap occurs for the cooling adaptation benefits received by an average resident in these cities (2.2 ± 0.9 °C vs. 3.4 ± 1.7 °C). This cooling adaptation inequality is due to discrepancies in green space quantity and quality between cities in the Global North and South, shaped by socioeconomic and natural factors. Our analyses further suggest a vast potential for enhancing cooling adaptation while reducing global inequality. A 1.5-fold gap exists in green space cooling adaptation between cities in the Global South and North. Different geographical zones have regional heterogeneity in underlying earth surface structure and microclimate which result in different evolution trends and their response to climate change varies in extreme rainfalls in these zones. In the Guizhou province of China, there are complex landforms, which lead to spatial redistribution of rainfall, frequent extreme rainfall, and disasters high risk of geologic disasters. Research on extreme climate in Guizhou mostly paid attention to its spatio-temporal characteristics and modeling, but lack of analysis on its characteristics of extreme rainfall variability and response to temperature changes under different subsurface conditions. This study investigated the characteristics of the extreme rainfall spatiotemporal and recurrence periods in Guizhou province and discussed the relationship between the response of extreme rainfall to temperature change. Daily rainfall data from 1990 to 2020 and 2021–2100 at 31 meteorological observation stations throughout the province were collected to calculate extreme precipitation. This research had the following results. (1) Both historical and future periods show an upward trend in extreme rainfall in Guizhou province, with a spatial distribution pattern of "high in the south and low in the north, high in the east and low in the west" and "high in the southeast and low in the northwest", respectively; the spatial distribution of extreme rainfall under each recurrence period is consistent with the non-recurrence period. (2) Both historical and future periods show an upward trend in temperature in Guizhou province, with a spatial distribution consistent with that of the extreme rainfall in the corresponding period. (3) The change in extreme rainfall intensity with increasing temperature is almost always greater than the C–C rate for different periods and underlying earth surface structure; Extreme rainfall has a Hook response structure to temperature change, and the climate response structure shifts to the right with climate warming. Canada has major sources of atmospheric methane (CH4), with the world's second-largest boreal wetland and the world's fourth-largest natural gas production. However, Canada's CH4 emissions remain uncertain among estimates. Better quantification and characterization of Canada's CH4 emissions are critical for climate mitigation strategies. To improve our understanding of Canada's CH4 emissions, we performed an ensemble regional inversion for 2007–2017 constrained with the Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) surface measurement network. The decadal CH4 estimates show no significant trend, unlike some studies that reported long-term trends. The total CH4 estimate is 17.4 (15.3–19.5) TgCH4yr-1 , partitioned into natural and anthropogenic sources at 10.8 (7.5–13.2) and 6.6 (6.2–7.8) TgCH4yr-1 , respectively. The estimated anthropogenic emission is higher than inventories, mainly in western Canada (with the fossil fuel industry). Furthermore, the results reveal notable spatiotemporal characteristics. First, the modelled differences in atmospheric CH4 among the sites show improvement after inversion when compared to observations, implying the CH4 observation differences could help in verifying the inversion results. Second, the seasonal variations show slow onset and a late-summer maximum, indicating wetland CH4 flux has hysteretic dependence on air temperature. Third, the boreal winter natural CH4 emissions, usually treated as negligible, appear quantifiable (≥ 20 % of annual emissions). Understanding winter emission is important for climate prediction, as the winter in Canada is warming faster than the summer. Fourth, the inter-annual variability in estimated CH4 emissions is positively correlated with summer air temperature anomalies. The Northeast Greenland Shelf is a region currently considered to be an annual net sink of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. Water from the Northeast Greenland Shelf is advected to the formation regions of North Atlantic Deep Water; therefore, any carbon stored in the region may be retained in the global oceans on the timescales of the thermohaline circulation. We present the most extensive study of carbon chemistry on the Northeast Greenland Shelf to date, made possible by opportunistic sampling due to a sudden decrease in the sea ice concentration in late-August and September 2017. These are the first full-depth measurements of total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon at latitudes between 75 and 79° N, with additional data collected in the region of the Northeast Water Polynya and outside of Young Sound. We find that surface mixed-layer concentrations are variable and (for many stations) higher than the interpolated atmospheric concentration for the region during the sampling period. Below the surface mixed layer, CO2 concentrations increase linearly with decreasing apparent oxygen utilisation. The mixed layer deepens during the study period; this is associated with apparent changes in CO2 uptake. The Northeast Greenland Shelf is a hydrologically complex region with many processes influencing the carbonate system at smaller scales than our sampling density. The scatter in the dataset represents more than mere outliers, and the lack of relationship between the outliers and any measured variable indicates a strong influence of a currently undescribed (set of) variable(s) and/or process(es) at the sampled scales. These data were collected during a time of radically low sea ice concentrations for the region and may be an indication of future conditions. As they indicate the potential of the region to act as a seasonal source of CO2 to the atmosphere, this may modify our current estimate of the region as a strong annual net sink that is relatively protected from the immediate influence of atmospheric warming and climate change. "Global change" significantly alters organic matter and element cycling, but many of the underlying processes and consequences remain poorly understood. The interface of plants and soil plays a central role, coupling the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and lithosphere and integrating biological and geochemical processes. The contributions to this special issue address questions on both biotic and abiotic interactions underlying responses of terrestrial biogeochemical cycling to a range of global changes, including increases in atmospheric CO 2 concentrations, warming, drought and altered water regimes. In this overview, we synthesize key findings of the contributing empirical, conceptual and modelling-based studies covering responses of plants to elevated CO 2 ; the role of soil organisms in modulating responses to warming; impacts of global change on soil organic carbon, nitrogen, and mineral nutrient availability; and the influence of altered water-table depth caused by global change on greenhouse gas emissions. The showcased studies were conducted in regions from the Arctic to the tropics and highlight the manifold impacts of global change on various ecosystem components controlling biogeochemical processes occurring at the plant–soil interface. As the world navigates or faces the challenges of global warming and climate change, the real estate industry/sector is poised to playing a crucial role aimed at mitigating its impacts while creating sustainable wealth. In order to help investors, developers, and governments tackle the issues with climate change and global warming, this papers looks at the relationship between sustainable real estate investment and wealth generation. This paper looks at the emerging trends as well as innovations in sustainable real estate and green building technologies. In addition are designs that are energy-efficient as well as climate-resilient construction. The paper also addressed the issues pertaining to regulatory and policy frameworks that is necessary in the support of sustained real estate practices while it highlighted successful best practices. Drosophila subobscura is an excellent model species for testing genetic variation in thermal adaptation due to its rich inversion chromosomal polymorphism. In Palearctic populations, the inversions of this species can be classified as "cold", "warm" or "nonthermal" adapted. Based on this classification the Chromosomal Thermal Index (CTI) was developed, which allows measuring the thermal adaptation of populations and monitoring changes over time. Here, we aim to use this index in American colonizing populations of D. subobscura for the first time to obtain new information on the species thermal adaptation. Thus, thermal adapted inversions ("cold" and "warm") were defined for the American continent and CTI was computed in South American (1981 and 1999 samples) and North American (1985 and 2004 samples) populations of D. subobscura. In general, both American populations showed an inverse relationship between CTI values and latitude, with CTI values decreasing when latitude increases. When comparing populations sampled in different years, an increase in CTI values was detected in four out of six temporal comparisons (only one was significant) of South America (1981 and 1999) and in six out of seven populations of North America (1985 and 2004). A global analysis using a one‐way repeated measures anova of CTI values in both American hemispheres showed a trend of increase for "warm" adapted inversions in Chile and North America, but this increase was only significant for the latter. The carbonate rock of the Qiulitage Formation is a significant stratum for oil and gas exploration in the Tarim Basin. To elucidate its environmental characteristics, we conducted tests and analyses of trace elements, carbon, and oxygen isotopes of the carbonate rocks of the Qiulitage Formation in the Kekeqigankake section of the Keping area. The results reveal that δ13C values range between −1.7‰ and 4.3‰, with an average value of 1.645‰. δ18O values fluctuate from −11.4‰ to −6‰, with an average value of −8.2475‰. Z values (paleosalinity) vary from 120.33 to 131.67, significantly exceeding 120 with an average value of 126.52, indicating a marine sedimentary environment. Paleotemperature values (T) range from 12.75 to 29.09 °C, with an average value of 21.36 °C, suggesting warm climate conditions. The Sr/Ba (3.42~24.39) and Sr/Cu (57.5~560) ratios are elevated, while Th/U (<1.32) and V/Cr (0.989~1.70) ratios are reduced, suggesting that the Qiulitage Formation was deposited in an oxygen-rich, warm marine sedimentary environment with relatively high salinity. Global warming is one of the most important issues that the world is currently facing. The cement industry accounts for around 7% of total global CO2 emissions. According to the 13th United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, cement plants must become carbon neutral by 2050. This neutrality may be achieved by a reduction in CO2 emissions complemented with carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) technologies. In accordance with these sustainable goals, several approaches have been studied. This paper investigates life cycle carbon of mortars produced with carbonated recycled aggregates. In previous works, the carbon dioxide capture capacity of construction and demolition waste (CDW) was analysed, and mortars with CDW recycled aggregates submitted to high levels of CO2 were evaluated in terms of their mechanical performance. This paper focus on the life cycle carbon impact assessment (LCCA) of industrial mortar formulations in a cradle-to-gate boundary. This assessment is carried out through a global warming potential environment impact assessment, since it represents the amount of CO2 equivalent that is sent to the atmosphere and contributes to the "greenhouse effect". This LCCA includes the impacts associated with the treatment and additional transportation routes of the recycled aggregates. With this work, it was found that mortars with carbonated recycled aggregates have a considerably lower global warming potential impact than mortars without recycled aggregates. The mortars with recycled aggregates presented lower CO2 emissions of up to 6.31% for 100% incorporation of non-carbonated recycled aggregates. These values were incremented with the carbonation of the recycled aggregates, achieving a reduction of CO2 emissions of up to 36.75% for 100% of incorporation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Analyzing the impacts of climate change on phytosanitary problems in Brazil is crucial due to the country's special role in global food security as one of the largest producers of essential commodities. This review focuses on the effects of climate change on plant diseases and discusses its main challenges in light of Brazil's diverse agricultural landscape. To assess the risk of diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses, oomycetes, nematodes, and spiroplasms, we surveyed 304 pathosystems across 32 crops of economic importance from 2005 to 2022. Results show that diseases caused by fungi account for 79% of the pathosystems evaluated. Predicting the occurrence of diseases in a changing climate is a complex challenge, and the continuity of this work is strategic for Brazil's agricultural defense. The future risk scenarios analyzed here aim to help guide disease mitigation for cropping systems. The deployment of engineered substrates seeded with newly settled corals is a technique being developed to increase the numbers of juvenile corals on reefs with the goal of improving reef resilience in response to climate warming. Using a hierarchical sampling design, we explored the spatial scales at which seeded coral (spat) survival and growth varied in situ and investigated the environmental drivers of seeded spat success in the southern inshore Great Barrier Reef. After 10 months, variation in spat survival and size was greatest at the smallest spatial scale (1–2 m) (27 and 11% of variation, respectively), indicating the scale at which the main drivers of post‐settlement survival and growth are occurring. Crustose coralline algae (CCA) cover on seeding units prior to deployment was a significant driver of short‐ and long‐term spat survival (22% of variation). Survival of Acropora millepora and A. muricata spat did not differ according to benthic community variation. Increasing cover of branching Acropora corals was correlated with decreased survival and the size of Montipora aequituberculata spat, although CCA cover on plugs remained the most influential factor determining survival. Interspecific variation in spat survival and size and higher survival and size in the side‐facing orientation of the seeding units suggest natural variation in response to the seeding method, warranting further experiments to refine species selection and deployment methods prior to upscaling. High within‐site variation in seeded spat survival and size highlights the need for future studies of ecological factors driving post‐settlement mortality at fine spatial scales. Ecological protection in the Yellow River Basin (YRB) is a major strategy for China's sustainable development. Amid global warming, droughts have occurred more frequently, severely affecting vegetation growth. Based on the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) at different time scales from 2003 to 2020, this study employed the linear trend method and the Spearman correlation coefficient method to calculate the trends and correlation coefficients of NDVI and SPEI at different scales at the pixel scale and explored the spatial distribution pattern of the sensitivity of vegetation growth in the YRB to drought. The results show that: (1) NDVI and SPEI are positively correlated in 77% of the area, negatively correlated in 9%, and are positively correlated in the arid and semi-arid areas, while negatively correlated in the humid and subhumid areas. The significant negative correlation between NDVI and drought at high altitudes may be due to the fact that Gramineae vegetation is more sensitive to drought, with heat being more affected than water. (2) Urbanization has a relatively obvious impact on the distribution of drought. Extreme drought mainly occurs in the middle and upper reaches of the Wei River; severe drought mainly occurs in the central area of the Guanzhong Plain centered on Xi'an; the central area of the Loess Plateau; and the surrounding areas of the Zhengzhou-centered Central Plains City Group. (3) The NDVI showed an upward trend from 2003 to 2020, indicating an increase in vegetation density or an expansion of vegetation coverage. From the temporal trend, SPEI decreased at a rate of −0.17/decade, indicating that the entire watershed has a drought trend on an annual scale. (4) Spring NDVI is more sensitive to the water supply provided by SPEI-1, while the positive correlation between SPEI and NDVI begins to rise in June and reaches its peak in July, then starts to decline in August. In autumn and winter, NDVI is more sensitive to 3–6-month accumulated drought. (5) From the dynamic transmission laws of different levels of positive correlation, the positive impact of the 3-month accumulated drought on NDVI is most significant, and the influence of SPEI-1 on the negative correlation between SPEI and NDVI is most significant. This paper aims to clarify the sensitivity of vegetation to different time-scale droughts, provide a basis for alleviating drought in the YRB, and promote sustainable development of ecological environmental protection. The research findings enable us to gain a profound insight into the responsiveness of vegetation growth to drought in the context of global warming and offer a valuable theoretical foundation for devising pertinent measures to alleviate stress on vegetation growth in regions prone to frequent droughts. To mitigate global warming, phasing out coal in the global energy system orderly and rapidly is an important near-term strategy. However, the majority of coal-fired plants in China have operated for less than 15 years. Accelerated coal power plant retirements would lead to substantial asset stranding. Coal-to-nuclear (C2N) technology offers a potential solution by replacing coal boilers in existing coal-fired plants with nuclear reactors. In this study, the G4-ECONS model was used to assess the economics of repowering a 600 MW supercritical coal-fired power plant with two 272 MWe high-temperature gas-cooled reactors. The timeline for the C2N project and the additional cost of dispatching electricity from the grid during retrofitting were discussed. Results showed that the C2N total capitalized costs are 19.4% (baseline estimate, USD 5297.6/kW) and 11.1% (conservative estimate, USD 5847.2/kW) lower than the greenfield project (USD 6576.5/kW), respectively. And C2N projects need to reduce LUEC by at least 20% to become competitive. This study can inform engineering design decisions leading to more precise and cost-effective C2N projects. The glaciers in southeastern Tibet Plateau (SETP) influenced by oceanic climate are sensitive to global warming, and there remains a notable deficiency in accurate multitemporal change analyses of these glaciers. We conduct glacier inventories in the Yigong Zangbo River Basin (YZRB) in SETP for the years 1988, 2015, and 2023 utilizing Landsat and Sentinel-2 imagery, and analyze the glacier spatiotemporal variation incorporating the existing glacier inventory data. Since the 1970s until 2023, the glaciers significantly retreated at a rate of 0.76 ± 0.11%·a−1, with the area decreasing from 2583.09 ± 88.80 km2 to 1635.89 ± 71.74 km2, and the ice volume reducing from 221.7017 ± 7.9618 km3 to 152.7429 ± 6.1747 km3. The most significant retreat occurred in glaciers smaller than 1 km2. Additionally, glaciers on southern aspects retreated slower than the northern counterparts. The glaciers in the western YZRB witnessed a significantly greater shrinkage rate than those in the eastern section, with the most pronounced changes occurring in Aso Longbu River Basin. Furthermore, severe glacier mass deficits were observed from 2000 to 2019, averaging a loss rate of 0.57 ± 0.06 m w.e. a−1. The continuous rise in air temperature has primarily induced a general widespread glacier change in the YZRB. However, diverse topography led to spatial variability in glacier changes with discrepancies as large as several times. The features of individual glaciers, such as glacier size, debris cover, and the development of ice-contact glacial lakes enhanced the local complexity of glacier change and elusive response behaviors to climate warming led by the different topographic conditions. The critical challenge of ongoing climate warming is resulting in glacier melting globally, a process accompanied by the formation of substantial glacier forelands. This phenomenon emerges as a pivotal area of study, especially in the Tibetan Plateau (TP), known as the Third Pole and the Asian Water Tower. In particular, the rapid retreat of temperate glaciers in the southeastern TP has led to the formation of expansive glacier forelands. These forelands are not merely evidence of climate shifts but are also key areas for transformative carbon dynamics. Moreover, the newly exposed land surface actively adjusts the balance of dissolved organic carbon, especially in meltwater, and influences the release of greenhouse gases from a range of sources including glacial lakes, subglacial sediments, and supraglacial/proglacial rivers. These processes play a crucial role in the dynamics of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Drawing from our intensive and detailed observations over several years, this perspective not only emphasizes the importance of the underexplored impact of glacier forelands on carbon cycles but also opens a window into understanding potential future trajectories in a warming world. Global warming has increased the stress conditions faced by natural populations of forest species. Genetic variation (GV) and phenotypic plasticity (PP) of adaptive traits are the main mechanisms by which these species survive the in situ effects of environmental fluctuation including a higher frequency of stressful events. This study evaluated the level of GV and PP in annual shoot growth and bud phenology traits such as bud flush and bud set date in 44 families of Pinus pseudostrobus from central Mexico established in an open-pollinated progeny trial replicated at two sites with different soil and climate conditions. Results showed wide GV in seasonal shoot growth pattern and strong genetic control in bud phenology traits. Shoot growth, particularly activation and formation of terminal bud, and shoot growth during wintertime, showed an adaptive relationship with climate conditions of origin site of families, particularly with moisture availability and aridity index. Despite the significant effect of test site on shoot growth, families exhibited consistent performance across sites for most traits, except for wintertime shoot growth (WSG) which showed a significant genotype x environment interaction. PP in WSG showed moderate genetic control and positive relationship with productivity (total height). The adaptive value of the GV and PP of shoot growth traits could allow P. pseudostrobus populations to mitigate the negative impacts of environmental fluctuations associated with global warming and provide competitive advantages in productivity for domestication purposes.
