Coherent Diffractive Imaging (CDI) is an algorithmic imaging technique where intricate features are reconstructed from measurements of the freely diffracting intensity pattern. An important goal of such lensless imaging methods is to study the structure of molecules that cannot be crystallized. Ideally, one would want to perform CDI at the highest achievable spatial resolution and in a single-shot measurement such that it could be applied to imaging of ultrafast events. However, the resolution of current CDI techniques is limited by the diffraction limit, hence they cannot resolve features smaller than one half the wavelength of the illuminating light. Here, we present sparsity-based single-shot subwavelength resolution CDI: algorithmic reconstruction of subwavelength features from far-field intensity patterns, at a resolution several times better than the diffraction limit. This work paves the way for subwavelength CDI at ultrafast rates, and it can considerably improve the CDI resolution with X-ray free-electron lasers and high harmonics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum) production in tropical and subtropical regions of the world is limited by the endemic presence of Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV). Breeding programmes aimed at producing TYLCV-resistant tomato cultivars have utilized resistance sources derived from wild tomato species. So far, all reported breeding programmes have introgressed TYLCV resistance from a single wild tomato source. Here, we tested the hypothesis that pyramiding resistances from different wild tomato species might improve the degree of resistance of the domesticated tomato to TYLCV. We have crossed TYLCV-resistant lines that originated from different wild tomato progenitors, Solanum chilense, Solanum peruvianum, Solanum pimpinellifolium, and Solanum habrochaites. The various parental resistant lines and the F1 hybrids were inoculated in the greenhouse using viruliferous whiteflies. Control, non-inoculated plants of the same lines and hybrids were exposed to non-viruliferous whiteflies. Following inoculation, the plants were scored for disease symptom severity, and transplanted to the field. Resistance was assayed by comparing yield of inoculated plants to those of the control non-inoculated plants of the same variety. Results showed that the F1 hybrids between the resistant lines and the susceptible line suffered major yield reduction because of infection, but all hybrids were more resistant than the susceptible parent. All F1 hybrids resulting from a cross between two resistant parents, showed a relatively high level of resistance, which in most cases was similar to that displayed by the more resistant parent. In some cases, the hybrids displayed better levels of resistance than both parents, but the differences were not statistically significant. The F1 hybrid between a line with resistance from S. habrochaites and a line with resistance from S. peruvianum (HAB and 72-PER), exhibited the lowest yield loss and the mildest level of symptoms. Although the resistance level of this F1 hybrid was not statistically different from the level of resistance displayed by the 72-PER parent itself, it was statistically better than the level of resistance displayed by the F1 hybrids between 72-PER and any other resistant or susceptible line. This research is aimed at quantitative genetic analysis of several avocado traits and cultivars. The experimental material consists of our avocado breeding project in which data were collected from several crosses as well as selfings of cultivars. Parenthood was determined by isozymes and the seedling progenies were assessed for eight traits. A biometrical genetic approach for analysis of this breeding project is presented. Genetic profiles of the traits and cultivars were detailed by several characteristics: level of heterozygosity and dominance deviation, dominance of alleles, dominance direction, general evaluation of additive and non-additive genetic variance, maternal inheritance, and allelic differences among the various cultivars in major genes controlling the same quantitative trait. Five avocado cultivars: 'Fuerte', 'Hass', 'Ettinger', 'Tova', and 'Rosh-Hanikra', were characterized separately for each trait. Gibberellin-like activity in avocado (Persea americana) fruit extracts was measured by the barley endosperm bioassay. Fruit tissues were anlyzed separately during fruit growth. The level of the activity found was very high in the endosperm and in the seed coats, but decreased in the latter during fruit growth. No measurable gibberellin-like activity was detected in the mesocarp or in the embryo. It is assumed that the seed coats are a site of production of gibberellin-like substances in the avocado fruit. The wheat coleoptile elongation bioassay was used for determination of growth-promoting and growth-inhibiting substances in avocado (Persea americana Mill.) fruit tissues, during development and maturation. Growth-promoting activity was found in two zones on paper chromatograms developed with isopropanol : ammonia : water (10:1:1 v/v): Rf 0.30-0.50 and Rf 0.8-0.9. Growth inhibiting activity was found in three different zones: "A" Rf 0.0-0.2, "B" (abscisic acid) Rf 0.6-0.8, and "C" (l-acetoxy-2,4-dihyroxy-n-heptadeca-16-ene) Rf 0.85-1.0. Higher levels of auxins were found in seed tissues than in the mesocarp. No correlation was found between fruit growth rate and level of extractable auxins in the mesocarp. The amount of abscisic acid (ABA) in the mesocarp was constant during fruit growth. A gradual and consistent increase in l-acetoxy-2,4-dihydroxy-n-hepta-deca-16-ene was found during fruit growth, reaching a maximum when the fruit attained maturity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
