We report the first observation of global recycling coefficient R near 0.5 in the Lithium Tokamak eXperiment-β (LTX-β), significantly below the minimum R previously reported in other devices. In a series of experiments with varied Li wall conditioning, estimates of the recycling coefficient have been made using a Lyman-α array and DEGAS2 modeling. A progressive reduction in Lyman-α emission with increased lithium and an increase in edge electron temperature are observed. It is also observed that with increasing Li coating thickness, the effective particle confinement time τ p * is reduced and approaches TRANSP calculated energy confinement time (τE), with τ p * near τ E , TRANSP for the lowest recycling coefficients. Edge temperatures approaching core plasma temperatures, first reported in LTX, can now be directly connected to estimates of the recycling coefficient and qualitatively agree with previous UEDGE simulations. The particle flux to the limiting surfaces appears to be significantly reduced in comparison with fluid scrape-off layer (SOL) models, indicating that a large fraction of the SOL ions are mirror trapped. SOL collisionality drops more than an order of magnitude below the banana regime boundary, indicating the importance of kinetic effects. Full-f 1x2v gyrokinetic simulations of SOL field lines with the GKEYLL code indicate that the fraction of ions trapped along field lines increases as collisionality drops, as a result of increased lithium evaporation. The effect of neutral interactions on scrape-off layer (SOL) turbulence is investigated in a continuum gyrokinetic code that has been coupled to a continuum kinetic model of neutral transport. This extends the work of a previous paper [T. N. Bernard et al., Phys. Plasmas 9, 052501 (2022)], which compared two NSTX SOL simulations in simple helical geometry, one with neutrals and one without. The former included electron-impact ionization, charge exchange, and wall recycling. Here, the case with neutrals is compared to a gyrokinetic-only simulation that includes an effective ionization source to separate the effect of sourcing from charge exchange collisions. It is observed that sourcing accounts for many features of the simulated SOL with neutrals, including density and temperature magnitudes and reduced normalized density fluctuations, but differences persist. In particular, a flatter density profile results due to changes in parallel transport when neutral collisions are included, illustrating the importance of neutral drag on global plasma properties. An analysis of coherent turbulent structures, or blobs, in these simulations demonstrates the case with neutrals has slower and larger blobs. A series of seeded blob simulations corroborates the blob velocity observation. In general, the blob motion does not contribute significantly to radial transport in these simulations. High-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnetic mirrors under development exploit strong fields with high mirror ratio to compress loss cones and enhance confinement and may offer cheaper, more compact fusion power plant candidates. This new class of devices could exhibit largely unexplored interchange and gradient-driven modes. Such instabilities, and methods to stabilize them, can be studied with gyrokinetics, given the strong magnetization and prevalence of kinetic effects. Our focus here is to (a) determine if oft-used gyrokinetic models for open field lines produce the electron-confining (Pastukhov) electrostatic potential and (b) examine and address challenges faced by gyrokinetic codes in studying HTS mirrors. We show that a one-dimensional limit of said models self-consistently develops a potential qualitatively approaching the analytical Pastukhov level. Additionally, we describe the computational challenges of studying high mirror ratios with open field line gyrokinetic solvers and offer a force softening method to mitigate small time steps needed for time integration in colossal magnetic field gradients produced by HTS coils, providing a 19X speedup. The effect of varying magnetic shear on scrape-off layer turbulence and profiles is studied via electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulations of a helical scrape-off layer model. We develop a model helical geometry with magnetic shear and a corresponding field-aligned coordinate system, which is used for simulations with the Gkeyll code. We find that perpendicular transport is reduced in cases with stronger shear, resulting in higher peak particle and heat fluxes to the endplates. We present the first-of-its-kind coupling of a continuum full-f gyrokinetic turbulence model with a 6D continuum model for kinetic neutrals, carried out using the Gkeyll code. Our objective is to improve the first-principle understanding of the role of neutrals in plasma fueling, detachment, and their interaction with edge plasma profiles and turbulence statistics. Our model includes only atomic hydrogen and incorporates electron-impact ionization, charge exchange, and wall recycling. These features have been successfully verified with analytical predictions and benchmarked with the DEGAS2 Monte Carlo neutral code. We carry out simulations for a scrape-off layer (SOL) with simplified geometry and National Spherical Torus Experiment parameters. We compare these results to a baseline simulation without neutrals and find that neutral interactions reduce the normalized density fluctuation levels and associated skewness and kurtosis, while increasing auto-correlation times. We demonstrate that cross field transport in the scrape-off layer (SOL) can be moderately increased by electromagnetic effects in high-beta regimes, resulting in broadening of the electron heat-flux width on the endplates. This conclusion is taken from full-f electromagnetic gyrokinetic simulations of a helical SOL model that roughly approximates the SOL of the National Spherical Torus Experiment. The simulations have been performed with the Gkeyll code, which recently became the first code to demonstrate the capability to simulate electromagnetic gyrokinetic turbulence on open magnetic field lines with sheath boundary conditions. We scan the source rate and thus β, so that the normalized pressure gradient (the MHD ballooning parameter α ∝ ∂ β / ∂ r ∝ β / L p ) is scanned over an experimentally relevant range, α = 0.3 − 1.5. While there is little change in the pressure gradient scale length Lp near the midplane as beta is increased, a 10% increase in cross field transport near the midplane results in an increase in the electron heat-flux width λq and a 25% reduction of the peak electron heat flux to the endplates. A key uncertainty in the design and development of magnetic confinement fusion energy reactors is predicting edge plasma turbulence. An essential step in overcoming this uncertainty is the validation in accuracy of reduced turbulent transport models. Drift-reduced Braginskii two-fluid theory is one such set of reduced equations that has for decades simulated boundary plasmas in experiment, but significant questions exist regarding its predictive ability. To this end, using a novel physics-informed deep learning framework, we demonstrate the first ever direct quantitative comparisons of turbulent field fluctuations between electrostatic two-fluid theory and electromagnetic gyrokinetic modeling with good overall agreement found in magnetized helical plasmas at low normalized pressure. Pair plasmas, collections of both matter and antimatter particles of equal mass, represent a paradigm for the study of basic plasma science, and many open questions exist regarding these unique systems. They are found in many astrophysical settings, such as gamma-ray bursts, and have recently also been produced in carefully designed laboratory experiments. A central research topic in plasma physics is instability; however, unlike their more common ion–electron siblings, pair plasmas are generally thought to be stable to cross field pressure gradients in homogeneous magnetic fields. It is shown here by means of kinetic full-f simulations that, when a pressure gradient is first established, the Gradient-driven Drift Coupling mode is destabilized and becomes turbulent. Force balance is eventually achieved by a combination of flattened pressure profiles due to turbulent transport and establishment of a magnetic field gradient, saturating the growth. During the unstable phase, key physics can be captured by a δf gyrokinetic description, where it is shown analytically and numerically that parallel particle motion results in a coupling of all electromagnetic field components. A fluid model derived therefrom accurately predicts linear eigenmodes and is used to resolve global profile effects. For laser-based electron–positron plasma experiments, prompt instability is predicted with growth times much shorter than plasma lifetimes. Similarly, growth rates are calculated for the planned APEX experiment as well as gamma-ray burst scenarios, suggesting that the instability may contribute to the early evolution of these systems. A conservative discontinuous Galerkin scheme for a non-linear Dougherty collision operator in full-f long-wavelength gyrokinetics is presented. Analytically this model operator has the advective-diffusive form of Fokker-Planck operators, it has a non-decreasing entropy functional, and conserves particles, momentum and energy. Discretely these conservative properties are maintained exactly as well, independent of numerical resolution. In this work the phase space discretization is performed using a novel version of the discontinuous Galerkin scheme, carefully constructed using concepts of weak equality and recovery. Discrete time advancement is carried out with an explicit time-stepping algorithm, whose stability limits we explore. The formulation and implementation within the long-wavelength gyrokinetic solver of Gkeyll are validated with relaxation tests, collisional Landau-damping benchmarks and the study of 5D gyrokinetic turbulence on helical, open field lines. Two-fluid Braginskii codes have simulated open-field line turbulence for over a decade, and only recently, it has become possible to study these systems with continuum gyrokinetic codes. This work presents a first-of-its-kind comparison between fluid and (long-wavelength) gyrokinetic models in open field-lines, using the GDB and Gkeyll codes to simulate interchange turbulence in the Helimak device at the University of Texas [T. N. Bernard et al., Phys. Plasmas 26, 042301 (2019)]. Partial agreement is attained in a number of diagnostic channels when the GDB sources and sheath boundary conditions (BCs) are selected carefully, especially the heat-flux BCs that can drastically alter the temperature. The radial profile of the fluctuation levels is qualitatively similar and quantitatively comparable on the low-field side, although statistics such as moments of the probability density function and the high-frequency spectrum show greater differences. This comparison indicates areas for future improvement in both simulations, such as sheath BCs, and improvements in GDB like particle conservation and spatially varying thermal conductivity, in order to achieve better fluid-gyrokinetic agreement and increase fidelity when simulating experiments. GRILLIX employs the flux‐coordinate independent approach (FCI), which allows us to study boundary plasma turbulence in realistic diverted configurations. Recently, the physical model in GRILLIX has been extended to a global drift‐reduced Braginskii model, without any separation between background and fluctuations. It includes electromagnetic and thermal dynamics with hot ions, relaxation of the Boussinesq approximation and non‐linear parametric dependencies. This contribution presents solutions to associated issues, that is, the ion diamagnetic polarization and the stiff parallel heat conduction. Simulations based on parameters characteristic for the Alcator C‐Mod tokamak were carried out. In circular geometry, the self‐consistent electric field contains zonal flows and geodesic acoustic modes in the confined region. In the scrape‐off layer, the electron parallel heat conduction and its boundary condition determine the temperature and electric field, leading to sheared flows at the last closed flux surface. We present algorithms and results from Gkeyll, a full-f continuum, electromagnetic gyrokinetic code, designed to study turbulence in the edge region of fusion devices. The edge is computationally very challenging, requiring robust algorithms that can handle large-amplitude fluctuations and stable interactions with plasma sheaths. We present an energy-conserving high-order discontinuous Galerkin scheme that solves gyrokinetic equations in Hamiltonian form. Efficiency is improved by a careful choice of basis functions and automatically generated computation kernels. Previous verification tests were performed in the straight-field-line large plasma device [Shi et al., J. Plasma Phys. 83, 905830304 (2017)] and the Texas Helimak, a simple magnetized torus [Bernard et al., Phys. Plasmas 26, 042301 (2019)], including the effect of end-plate biasing on turbulence. Results for the scrape-off layer for NSTX parameters with a model helical magnetic geometry with bad curvature have been obtained [Shi et al., Phys. Plasmas 26, 012307 (2019)]. In this paper, we present algorithms for the two formulations of electromagnetic gyrokinetics: the Hamiltonian and the symplectic. We describe each formulation and show results of benchmark tests. Although our scheme works for the Hamiltonian formulation, the presence of spurious numerical modes for high-β and large k ⊥ 2 ρ s 2 regimes shows that the symplectic formulation is more robust. We then review our recent algorithm for the symplectic formulation [Mandell et al., J. Plasma Phys. 86, 905860109 (2020)], along with example application of this new capability. We present an energy-conserving discontinuous Galerkin scheme for the full- $f$ electromagnetic gyrokinetic system in the long-wavelength limit. We use the symplectic formulation and solve directly for $\unicode[STIX]{x2202}A_{\Vert }/\unicode[STIX]{x2202}t$ , the inductive component of the parallel electric field, using a generalized Ohm's law derived directly from the gyrokinetic equation. Linear benchmarks are performed to verify the implementation and show that the scheme avoids the Ampère cancellation problem. We perform a nonlinear electromagnetic simulation in a helical open-field-line system as a rough model of the tokamak scrape-off layer using parameters from the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX). Turbulent dynamics in the scrape-off layer of magnetic fusion devices is intermittent with large fluctuations in density and pressure. Therefore, a model is required that allows perturbations of similar or even larger magnitude to the time-averaged background value. The fluid-turbulence code GRILLIX is extended to such a global model, which consistently accounts for large variation in plasma parameters. Derived from the drift reduced Braginskii equations, the new GRILLIX model includes electromagnetic and electron-thermal dynamics, retains global parametric dependencies and the Boussinesq approximation is not applied. The penalization technique is combined with the flux-coordinate independent approach [F. Hariri and M. Ottaviani, Comput. Phys. Commun. 184, 2419 (2013) and A. Stegmeir et al., Comput. Phys. Commun. 198, 139 (2016)], which allows to study realistic diverted geometries with X-point(s) and general boundary contours. We characterize results from turbulence simulations and investigate the effect of geometry by comparing simulations in circular geometry with toroidal limiter against realistic diverted geometry at otherwise comparable parameters. Turbulence is found to be intermittent with relative fluctuation levels of up to 40% showing that a global description is indeed important. At the same time via direct comparison, we find that the Boussinesq approximation has only a small quantitative impact in a turbulent environment. In comparison to circular geometry, the fluctuations are reduced in diverted geometry, which is related to a different zonal flow structure. Moreover, the fluctuation level has a more complex spatial distribution in diverted geometry. Due to local magnetic shear, which differs fundamentally in circular and diverted geometries, turbulent structures become strongly distorted in the perpendicular direction and are eventually damped away toward the X-point. We have discovered that one of the original articles [1] findings, that the actual choice of the dimensionless parameter I i SB I i i 0 sb for the ion heat conductivity seemed to play no role for the simulation results, was not physical. The main conclusion is that the dimensionless ion heat conductivity I i SB I i i 0 sb plays as much of a role for the equilibrium ion temperature profile I T i SB I i i sb as the electron heat conductivity I i SB I e i 0 sb for the electron profile I T i SB I e i sb . We find that in comparison to the mistakenly used I i SB I i i 0 sb = 26.6, the proper, lower ion heat conductivity I i SB I i i 0 sb = 1.15 increases the stationary ion temperature gradient I i SB I r i sb I T i SB I i i sb in the confined region, leading to I T i SB I i i sb < I T i SB I e i sb at the separatrix. Multipactor, the well-known electron avalanche phenomena occurring in waveguides when the amplitude of the RF electric field exceeds a threshold, is modelled for lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) antennas. The electric field threshold departures significantly from the expected linear scaling with the frequency when the width of the waveguide along the electric field increases. For 5 GHz waveguides, the multipactor does not occur when this width exceeds 26 mm, in very good agreement with analytical formulation. Effect of static magnetic field with typical values of tokamak environment is examined. It is found that the threshold is weakly reduced (−6%) for the front face of the antenna featuring the rows of narrow waveguides. Strong reduction in the threshold is found where the wave frequency equals the electron cyclotron frequency (0.178 T at 5 GHz) but this condition will not be met on ITER. After baking at 240 °C, wide waveguides at the antenna input (29 mm on ITER) have a threshold of ∼7 kV cm−1, assuming a homogeneous magnetic field. However, preliminary results indicate higher threshold when the gradient of the magnetic field along the waveguide is taken into account and no limitation, from this section, is expected for the ITER LHCD antenna.
