Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) oil is attracting more interest for its nutritional as well as functional potentials. Nevertheless, its potential as new and innovative food component remains largely unexplored. This review aims to outline the chemical composition, extraction methods, and health advantages of krill oil, offering insights for its utilization and provides evidence why it is now on the spotlight. Krill oil presents a distinctive fat profile, rich in lipid classes, with phospholipids (PLs) comprising a significant portion (38.93—79.99%) with high levels of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Additionally, it includes several minor bioactive components like astaxanthin, tocopherols, sterols, flavonoids, and vitamin A. Various extraction technics, including solvent and solvent-free extraction, enzyme-assisted pretreatment extraction, super/subcritical fluid extraction, significantly influence both output as well as standard of the resulting product. Furthermore, the oil had been linked to a number of health advantages, including prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD), anti-inflammatory effects, support for women's physiology, anticancer activities, as well as neuroprotection, among others. Despite the commercial availability of krill oil products as dietary supplement, there is a scarcity of studies exploring the underlying molecular mechanisms responsible for its various biological activities. Despite this, apply krill oil as an innovative food ingredient has not been thoroughly investigated. This review consolidates information on the chemical composition, extraction techniques, possible health advantages, as well as existing uses as applications, aiming to offer insights for its complete exploitation. The snow/pink crab (Chionoecetes opilio) and Northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) are widely distributed in the North Atlantic Ocean. During processing/consumption, about 80% of the harvest is discarded as processing waste, which is a rich source of protein, chitin, minerals, and carotenoids. This study, for the first time, investigated the proximate composition and individual amino acids, minerals, and carotenoids from different body parts (carapace, shoulder, claw, tip, and leg) of snow crabs and shrimp shells. Shrimp proteins were found to be abundant and well-balanced in their amino acid composition. Compared to shrimp shells, a lower content of amino acids was found in the snow crab, depending on the part of the shell used. Moreover, crab shells, mainly crab claws, contained a higher (p < 0.05) level of chitin compared to shrimp shells. Seven micro-elements (Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Ba, and Ce) and six macro-elements (Ca, Na, K, Mg, P, and Sr) were identified using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Among them, calcium and iron were higher in crab carapaces (p < 0.05), followed by shrimp shells and other crab shell segments. Additionally, shrimp and crab carapaces contained a significant level of carotenoids, and these were mainly composed of astaxanthin and its mono- and diesters, along with zeaxanthin, astacene, canthaxanthin, and lutein. Thus, this investigation provides detailed information to allow upcycling of shellfish waste and addresses the knowledge gap concerning the availability of various nutrients in different crab sections and shrimp shells. Background: There is no consensus on the frequency and timing of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection in tendon healing. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of single versus multiple PRP injections in the healing of patellar tendon defects in the experimental model, through histological and biomechanical investigation. Methods: Forty-four male skeletally mature Dutch rabbits were randomly divided into the five study groups (A, B,C, D,E). After creating a longitudinal acute patellar tendon defect on both knees (One-third the width of the patella tendon), the right legs of the rabbits were used as the intervention group and the left legs as the control groups. Animals in groups A, B, and C were euthanized on days 7, 14, and 28, respectively, after the first PRP injection. Animals in group D received the second PRP injection on day 10 and was euthanized on day 14. Animals in group D received the second and third PRP injections on days 10 and 20, respectively, and were euthanized on day 28. The outcomes were evaluated histologically (modification of Movin's Grading) and biomechanically. Results: The inflammatory condition was exaggerated in groups D and E. Load at failure was higher in the non-injected side of groups D and E, while there was no significant difference between the right and left legs of the three groups A, B and C. In other word, groups with a single PRP injection were more resistant to the increasing load compared to the groups with multiple PRP injections. Conclusions: PRP improves tendon healing if injected early after injury, while its injection after the initial phase of injury hampers tendon healing. In addition, a single PRP injection seems to be more effective than multiple PRP injection. Therefore, in cases where PRP injection is indicated for tendon repair, such as acute tendon injury, we recommend using a single PRP injection during tendon repair surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Molecular modifications have been practiced for more than a century and nowadays they are widely applied in food, pharmaceutical, or other industries to manipulate the physicochemical, bioactivity, metabolic/catabolic, and pharmacokinetic properties. Among various structural modifications, the esterification/O-acylation has been well-established in altering lipophilicity and bioactivity of parent bioactive compounds, especially natural polyphenolics, while maintaining their high biocompatibility. Meanwhile, various classic chemical and enzymatic protocols and other recently emerged cell factory technology are being employed as viable esterification strategies. In this contribution, the main motivations of phenolic esterification, including the tendency to replace synthetic alkyl phenolics with safer alternatives in the food industry to improve the bioavailability of phenolics as dietary supplements/pharmaceuticals, are discussed. In addition, the toxicity, metabolism, and commercial application of synthetic and natural phenolics are briefly introduced. Under these contexts, the mechanisms and reaction features of several most prevalent chemical and enzymatic esterification pathways are demonstrated. In addition, insights into the studies of esterification modification of natural phenolic compounds and specific pros/cons of various reaction systems with regard to their practical application are provided. The development of rail transport necessitates expanding environmentally friendly infrastructure. However, specific challenges arise in desert and sandy regions. One innovative solution to manage the effects of windblown sand on desert railways is the use of hump slab track superstructure. This paper develops a solid–fluid aerodynamic model based on ANSYS Fluent 2021 R2 software to simulate the hump slab track during a sandstorm. The model is validated through wind tunnel testing. A case study of a railway sandstorm in the Shuregaz region of Iran is presented, evaluating various sandstorm parameters and hump heights to determine their impact on sand concentration and particle velocity within the sand transit channels. The results indicate that increasing the sand particle diameter (from 150 to 250 µm) leads to higher sand concentration (up to 40%) and lower sand movement velocity (up to 28%). These results have been observed with a higher incremental approach concerning the sand flow rate. Conversely, increasing sandstorm velocity (from 10 to 30 m/s) decreases sand concentration and increases sand movement velocity up to 80% and 150%, respectively. The most important quality parameter of salmonids is the red color of their skin and muscles. In this contribution, the effects of astaxanthin and dietary lipid content on the pigmentation of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) were studied. Charrs were fed on diets containing 40, 60, and 80 ppm synthetic astaxanthin together with 10, 18, and 26% dietary lipids for 24 weeks. Results indicated that the astaxanthin concentration in the belly skin and flesh of fish was strongly correlated with both carotenoid and dietary lipid contents, suggesting a significant interaction between diets and the total carotenoid concentration in the belly skin and flesh. The Hunter color L* values of the fillet and the belly skin were inversely related to their carotenoid levels, whereas their a* and b* values were strongly correlated with the total carotenoid concentration. The apparent digestibility coefficient of carotenoids was directly correlated with the level of dietary lipid but inversely correlated with carotenoid contents. A strong correlation between the content of carotenoids retained in the flesh and their digestibility was observed. Thus, the pigmentation of Arctic charr could improve the overall consumer acceptability as well as nutritional and potential market values of Arctic charr. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND: Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides L.) was introduced into Canada in the early 2000s. This plant bears fruits with high commercial value in other countries due to its premium oil. Nevertheless, sea buckthorn berries are also a rich source of bioactives with nutraceutical potential, especially the variety grown in Newfoundland (Canada), which has not previously been characterized. As such, this study evaluated the composition of polyphenols in sea buckthorn pomace and seeds, as well as their prospective health‐promoting effects. RESULTS: Polyphenolic identification by high‐performance liquid chromatography–ultraviolet–mass spectrometry–time of flight revealed the presence of 24 compounds in the seeds and 16 compounds in the pomace, including phenolic acids, flavonoids, and tannins, with ellagic acid derivative IV (pomace, 52.13 μg g−1) and (+)‐catechin (seeds, 690.8 μg g−1) being the most dominant. Sea buckthorn extracts displayed in vitro antidiabetic and anti‐obesity potential by inhibiting α‐glucosidase (71.52–99.31%) and pancreatic lipase (15.80–35.61%) enzymes, respectively. The extracts also protected low‐density‐lipoprotein cholesterol (50.97–89.67%) and supercoiled DNA (35.11–79.84%) from oxidative damage. CONCLUSION: Sea buckthorn berries grown in Canada showed promising health benefits induced by their rich and diverse polyphenolic profile and need to be considered for further commercial expansion as a bioactive‐loaded superfruit. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. In this study, the effect of five geometric design features, including radius, superelevation, longitudinal grade, lane and shoulder width, on the average speed in the horizontal curve on a two-lane undivided rural road was investigated. The standardized regression coefficients showed that the most important factor affecting the speed was the radius (10.47) followed by the longitudinal grade (4.46). Superelevation and lane width had little effect. Shoulder width had no significant effect. This would be due to the wide width of the lanes. It was found that the relationships between speed and radius, longitudinal grade, superelevation and lane width were radical, quadratic, linear and linear, respectively. Increasing the longitudinal grade has increased the speed of the drivers. Increasing the superelevation was effective when its value changed from negative to positive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mounting impacts of climate change on infrastructure demand proactive adaptation strategies to ensure long-term resilience. This study investigates the effects of predicted future global warming on asphalt binder performance grade (PG) selection in the United States using a time series method. Leveraging Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) data and Superpave protocol model, the research forecasts temperature changes for the period up to 2060 and calculates the corresponding PG values for different states. The results reveal significant temperature increases across the majority of states, necessitating adjustments in PG selection to accommodate changing climate conditions. The findings indicate significant increases in average 7-day maximum temperatures across the United States by 2060, with 38 out of 50 states likely to experience rising trends. Oregon, Utah, and Idaho are anticipated to face the largest temperature increases. Concurrently, the low air temperature has risen in 33 states, with notable increases in Maine, North Carolina, and Virginia. The widening gap predicted between required high and low PG poses challenges, as some necessary binders cannot be produced or substituted with other grades. The study highlights the challenge of meeting future PG requirements with available binders, emphasizing the need to consider energy consumption and CO2 emissions when using modifiers to achieve the desired PG properties. Legumes, including beans, peas, chickpeas, and lentils, are cultivated worldwide and serve as important components of a balanced and nutritious diet. Each legume variety contains unique levels of protein, starch, fiber, lipids, minerals, and vitamins, with potential applications in various industries. By-products such as hulls, rich in bioactive compounds, offer promise for value-added utilization and health-focused product development. Various extraction methods are employed to enhance protein extraction rates from legume by-products, finding applications in various foods such as meat analogs, breads, and desserts. Moreover, essential fatty acids, carotenoids, tocols, and polyphenols are abundant in several residual fractions from legumes. These bioactive classes are linked to reduced incidence of cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, some cancers, obesity, and type 2 diabetes, among other relevant health conditions. The present contribution provides a comprehensive review of the nutritional and bioactive composition of major legumes and their by-products. Food products contain bioactive compounds such as phenolic and polyphenolic compounds and vitamins, resulting in a myriad of biological characteristics such as antimicrobial, anticarcinogenic, and antioxidant activities. However, their application is often restricted because of their relatively low solubility and stability in emulsions and oil-based products. Therefore, chemical, enzymatic, or chemoenzymatic lipophilization of these compounds can be achieved by grafting a non-polar moiety onto their polar structures. Among different methods, enzymatic modification is considered environmentally friendly and may require only minor downstream processing and purification steps. In recent years, different systems have been suggested to design the synthetic reaction of these novel products. This review presents the new trends in this area by summarizing the essential enzymatic modifications in the last decade that led to the synthesis of bioactive compounds with attractive antioxidative properties for the food industry by emphasizing on optimization of the reaction conditions to maximize the production yields. The long-term aging of bitumens and its effect on low-temperature performance is a detrimental phenomenon. In order to investigate the effects of the aging phenomenon on the low-temperature performance of bitumens, it is very important to accurately simulate the behavior of bitumens in repeated aging cycles and to investigate related viscoelastic, chemical, and microstructural changes. In this research, three types of bitumen with penetration grades of 40/50 , 60/70 , and 85/100 were subjected to one to three cycles of pressure aging vessel (PAV) aging. Comprehensive data on the bitumen's behavior were obtained by conducting bending beam rheometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy tests. Using the results of the conducted tests, an attempt was made to find precise relationships between different indicators of bitumen aging in terms of chemistry and viscoelasticity. The results revealed a linear correlation between the aging index and the ΔTc and dissipated energy ratio (DER) values, as well as the aging index and the vertical shift factor of the stiffness-time curve. The fitting coefficients of these linear relationships were R2=0.8 and above, indicating a strong linear relationship between these parameters. The volume filling ratio and type of filler significantly influence the rheological and mechanical properties of bituminous composites. This effect can stem from either chemical interactions between the filler and bitumen or simple physical phenomena. Understanding the influence of filler on asphalt mastic performance is crucial for comprehending the behavior of asphalt mixtures. This study employs both experimental and numerical modeling approaches. The rheological properties of asphalt mastic samples made with pure bitumen and limestone filler at various filler contents were determined using frequency sweep tests. The experimental results indicated that increasing the volume filling ratio in asphalt mastic leads to non-linear changes in the values of the complex shear modulus (G*) and phase angle (δ), known as the stiffening phenomenon. Considering the concept of transitional zone between filler and bitumen, a parameter called Effective Volume Filling Ratio (EVFR) was introduced to explain this phenomenon. To predict the viscoelastic behavior of asphalt mastic based on the mechanical properties of bitumen and filler, finite element method (FEM) simulations were utilized. The accuracy of these models was evaluated by calculating the relative difference between the experimental complex shear modulus (G*) and the complex shear modulus predicted by the model. Results of this evaluation indicated that incorporating the EVFR into the numerical model can significantly enhance the accuracy of the predictions for viscoelastic behavior of asphalt mastic samples. Shrimps are the most consumed species among crustaceans and are well appreciated for their flavor and high nutritional value. This work investigated the antioxidative compounds of Northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) and its processing discards (shells and heads) using various solvents and chromatographic techniques as well as mass spectrometry. Ethanol served as the best extraction medium, and the extracts obtained demonstrated strong antioxidant activity in a β-carotene-linoleate emulsion system. The antioxidative compounds of the extract were isolated using a silica gel column chromatography, followed by thin layer chromatography. This led to the identification of two highly polar and two low polarity compounds. These compounds, for the first time, were isolated and purified by using reversed-phase HPLC. Their structures were tentatively elucidated using electrospray mass spectrometry. These unique compounds were heterocyclic phenolic compounds and identified as 7-(3-butenyl)-2-hydroxy-6-(1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridin-2-yl) quinoline and 7-(3-butenyl)-2-hydroxy-6-(1,2,5,6-tertahydropyridin-2-yl)-7,8-dihydroquinoline and their isomers. The proposed novel compounds in shrimp provide a reason for their oxidative stability and potential benefits, as well as possibly serving as substrates for the discoloration of shrimp. Interspecific hybrid crude palm oil (HCPO) HIE OxG derived from crossbred African oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) and American Caiaué (Elaeis oleifera) is prominent for its fatty acid and antioxidant compositions (carotenoids, tocopherols, and tocotrienols), lower production cost, and high pest resistance properties compared to crude palm oil. Biodegradable and sustainable encapsulants derived from vegetable byproducts were used to formulate HCPO nanoparticles. Nanoparticles with hybrid crude palm oil and jackfruit seed flour as a wall material (N-JSF) and with hybrid crude palm oil and jackfruit axis flour as a wall material (N-JAF) were optimized using a 22 experimental design. They exhibited nanoscale diameters (<250 nm) and were characterized based on their zeta potential, apparent viscosity, pH, color, and total carotenoid content. The nanoparticles demonstrated a monodisperse distribution, good uniformity, and stability (polydispersity index < 0.25; zeta potentials: N-JSF −19.50 ± 1.47 mV and N-JAF −12.50 ± 0.17 mV), as well as high encapsulation efficiency (%) (N-JSF 86.44 ± 0.01 and N-JAF 90.43 ± 1.34) and an optimal carotenoid retention (>85%). Pavement engineers frequently employ concrete pavements because of their benefits such as extended lifetime, superior performance and durability, and so on. However, there are some disadvantages of these pavements such as shrinkage which may lead to cracking, warping, and limiting the length of the concrete pavement slabs. Shrinkage reducing admixture (SRA) and polypropylene fibers can be employed to prevent or control shrinkage cracking. In this study, increasing the length of concrete pavement slabs using shrinkage reducing admixture and polypropylene fiber was investigated. For mix compositions, two water–cement ratios of 0.35 and 0.4 were employed, and the percentages of SRA and polypropylene fiber utilized in mixes were 2% and 1% by weight of cement, respectively. Slump, compressive strength, third point flexural strength, electrical resistance, free and restrained shrinkage tests were carried out as the experimental programming to investigate the effect of these materials on concrete behavior and evaluate the amount of concrete pavement design parameters. Statistical analysis and RSM were used to determine the significance of each parameter and their interactions on concrete properties. It was observed that the use of SRA had no influence on workability; however, polypropylene fibers reduced the slump flow of concrete. Also, the use of SRA resulted in a decrease in mechanical properties. In addition, the use of polypropylene fibers considerably enhanced the energy absorption of concrete. Furthermore, on concrete containing SRA and polypropylene fiber, the magnitude of free and restrained shrinkage and crack width were reduced. Finally, the length and thickness of concrete pavement slabs were evaluated using the experimental results on the Tehran-Shomal freeway as a case study. The slab length could be increased by about 20% without any significant change in the slab thickness using SRA and polypropylene fiber in concrete mix composition. Salmon aquaculture generates 80% of the total revenue of finfish aquaculture across Canada. Salmon farming is carried out in a multilevel process, and at least 60% of the total production is considered as by-products, including skin, head, viscera, trimmings, frames, bones, and roes. These by-products are an excellent source of protein, which can be converted to protein hydrolysates through enzymatic hydrolysis and non-enzymatic processes such as chemical hydrolysis (acid and alkaline) in order to utilize them into value-added products. Several studies have reported that peptides from salmon protein hydrolysates possess bioactivities, including antihypertensive, antioxidant, anticancer, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, anti-allergic, and cholesterol-lowering effects. Incorporating in silico computational methods is gaining more attention to identify potential peptides from source proteins. The in silico methods can be used to predict the properties of the peptides and thereby predetermine the processing, isolation, and purification steps that can be used for the peptides of interest. Therefore, it is essential to implement robust, standardized, and cost-effective processing techniques that can easily be transferrable and scale up for industrial applications in view of circular economy and upcycling concept. This contribution summarizes the latest research information on Atlantic salmon, production statistics, growth lifecycle, processing, protein production techniques, nutritional and functional properties, peptide production and purification processes, as well as potential health benefits as a nutraceutical product. Predicting faulting failure is useful in the optimal concrete pavement design. In this study, artificial neural networks and the random forest method have been used to predict the amount of this failure. The general prediction model was created by inserting 32 available input variables into artificial neural networks. An integer two objectives optimisation problem was designed to select features that significantly affect the faulting. After applying this method, 19 important variables were identified and used to develop two simplified models based on artificial neural networks and the random forest method. It is shown that the simplified model developed by artificial neural networks is the best model to accurately predict the faulting considering the number of input variables. The cumulative number of days when the precipitation is more than 12.7 mm, the elastic modulus of concrete slab, the number of days passed since the pavement was built, base thickness, the cumulative ESALs in the traffic lane, and the annual average number of days when the temperature is more than 32°C were identified as the most important parameters in predicting faulting using the random forest method. Objective: The cardioprotective effects of nuts are well established. However, the positive impacts of nuts in preventing CVD at a younger age, a condition known as premature coronary artery disease (PCAD), is still debated. Therefore, we aim to determine the association between nuts and PCAD occurrence and its severity in different Iranian ethnicities. Design: This case–control study was conducted within the framework of the Iran-premature coronary artery disease (I-PAD) study, an ongoing multi-centric study on Iranian patients of different ethnicities. Setting: This multi-centric case–control study was conducted in among 3253 persons under the age of 70 years in women and 60 years in men from different ethnicities in Iran. Participants: Information on nut consumption was collected using a validated FFQ. Subjects were selected from among the candidates for angiography. Cases were those whose coronary angiography showed stenosis of more than 75 % in at least one vessel or more than 50 % of the left main artery, while the control group participants had normal angiography results. Results: In the crude model, compared to the first quartile, the highest quartile of nut consumption was significantly associated with a lower risk of PCAD (OR = 0·26, 95 % CI (0·21, 0·32); P for trend = 0·001). In the top quartile of nut intake, a substantial decrease in PCAD was observed after controlling for putative confounders (OR = 0·32; 95 % CI (0·24, 0·43); P for trend = 0·001). Additionally, a 75 % decrease in the risk of severe PCAD was observed in the participants in the highest quartile of nut intake. Conclusion: A significant inverse association was observed between nut intake and the risk and severity of PCAD in the Iranian population. This study aimed at investigating the association of acrylamide consumption with the incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in adults. The 6022 subjects of the Tehran lipid and glucose study participants were selected. The acrylamide content of food items were summed and computed cumulatively across follow up surveys. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were performed to estimate the hazards ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of incident T2D. This study was done on men and women, respectively aged 41.5 ± 14.1 and 39.2 ± 13.0 years. The mean ± SD of dietary acrylamide intake was 57.0 ± 46.8 µg/day. Acrylamide intake was not associated with the incidence of T2D after adjusting for confounding variables. In women, a higher acrylamide intake was positively associated with T2D [HR (CI) for Q4: 1.13 (1.01–1.27), P trend: 0.03] after adjusting for confounding factors. Our results demonstrated that dietary intake of acrylamide was associated with an increased risk of T2D in women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study is to create explicit prediction models for the complex shear modulus (G*) and phase angle (δ) of bitumen mastic fabricated using an evolutionary machine learning approach. The dynamic shear rheometer (DSR) test in frequency sweep mode at seven test temperatures was performed to measure G* and δ. In order to create specific prediction models for each modifier, multigene genetic programming (MGGP) was employed. These models took into account various factors including the dosage of the additive, filler volume filling rate, loading frequency, temperature, as well as the G* and δ values of the neat bitumen. In general, six explicit prediction models are presented for different additives with R-squared values of more than 0.9. The results showed that the hybrid machine learning approach can effectively develop precise, meaningful, and yet simple formulas for calculating G* and δ of the bitumen mastic. The structurally diverse bioactive compounds found in marine organisms represent valuable resources for the food and pharmaceutical industries. The marine ecosystem encompasses over half of the world's biota, providing an extensive range of bioactive compounds that can be extracted from various marine life forms, including marine microorganisms (such as bacteria, cyanobacteria, and actinobacteria), algae (both macroalgae and microalgae), invertebrates (including sponges, mollusks, echinoderms, and crustaceans), and, most importantly, fish. Many of these organisms thrive in extreme marine environments, leading to the production of complex molecules with unique biological functions. Consequently, marine biomolecules, such as lipids (especially polyunsaturated fatty acids), proteins/peptides, polysaccharides, carotenoids, phenolics, and saponins, exhibit a wide range of biological properties and can serve as valuable components in nutraceuticals and functional foods. Nevertheless, most of these biomolecules are susceptible to oxidation and degradation; encapsulation-based technologies tend to preserve them and increase their bioavailability and functions. These biological compounds demonstrate diverse activities, including antioxidant, anticancer, antithrombotic, anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, and cardioprotective effects, making them promising candidates for applications in the food industry. Despite their numerous health benefits, marine bioactive compounds have remained underutilized, not only in the food industry but also in the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical sectors. Flixweed (sophia) seed meal and camelina, both by-products of oil processing, were employed to generate protein hydrolysates by applying Flavourzyme and Alcalase. This study aimed to integrate in vitro and in silico methods to analyze sophia and camelina protein hydrolysates for releasing potent antioxidative, dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP IV) inhibitors and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory peptides. In vitro methods were used to investigate the antioxidant potential of sophia/camelina protein hydrolysates. Bioinformatics techniques, including Peptideranker, BIOPEP, Toxinpred, AlgPred, and SwissADME, were employed to obtain the identification of bioactive peptides produced during the hydrolysis process. Protein hydrolysates produced from sophia and camelina seed meal exhibited higher ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities Ithan their protein isolates. Among the produced protein hydrolysates, Alcalase-treated samples showed the highest oxygen radical absorbance capacity and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity. In addition, sophia/camelina hydrolysates prevented hydroxyl and peroxyl radical-induced DNA scission and LDL cholesterol oxidation. In silico proteolysis was conducted on Alcalase-treated samples, and resultant peptides showed potential DPP IV and ACE-inhibitory activities. Identified peptides were further assessed for their toxicity and medicinal properties. Results indicate that all digestive-resistant peptides were non-toxic and had desirable drug-like properties. Mediated electrochemical oxidation of butyl acetate (BA) in wastewater was conducted by employing two different techniques based on S2O8−2/ClO− and Ag (II) reagents using commercial Dimensionally Stable Anode (DSA)®‐O2 or DSA®‐Cl2 anodes. Response surface methodology (RSM) was also engaged to investigate process parameters impacts and their interactions on BA mineralization efficiency and energy consumption. Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR), UV–visible, and gas chromatography (GC) analyses confirmed BA mineralization and the optimum removal conditions were then attained for both systems. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) analysis showed that electro‐oxidation by mixed persulphate/hypochlorite oxidants favours the mineralization of BA (99.7%) compared to the Ag (II) technique (96.56%). The higher removal efficiency obtained by S2O8−2/ClO− was achieved in a neutral aquatic medium using DSA®‐Cl2 at a lower current density (CD), temperature, and electrolysis time (pH: 6, CD: 0.1 kA/m2, and time: 60 min) compared to those obtained by Ag (II) ions (pH: ≤3, CD: 1.69 kA/m2, and time: 130 min). The former process occurred under the charge transfer control mechanism at low CDs, whereas at an elevated CD (about 1.0 kA/m2), mass transfer was predominant due to the parasitic oxygen evolution. On the other hand, the latter process was found charge transfer‐controlled at low BA concentrations (≤200 ppm), whereas it turned out mass transfer‐controlled at higher BA concentrations. Comparing the anode type, energy consumption for BA mineralization by S2O8−2/ClO− ions using DSA®‐Cl2 at the optimum conditions was 0.009 kW · h/dm3, which was about three times lower than that of the DSA®‐O2 anode. This study aimed at investigating the association of acrylamide consumption with the incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in adults. The 6022 subjects of the Tehran lipid and glucose study participants were selected. The acrylamide content of food items were summed and computed cumulatively across follow up surveys. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were performed to estimate the hazards ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of incident T2D. This study was done on men and women, respectively aged 41.5 ± 14.1 and 39.2 ± 13.0 years. The mean ± SD of dietary acrylamide intake was 57.0 ± 46.8 µg/day. Acrylamide intake was not associated with the incidence of T2D after adjusting for confounding variables. In women, a higher acrylamide intake was positively associated with T2D [HR (CI) for Q4: 1.13 (1.01–1.27), P trend: 0.03] after adjusting for confounding factors. Despite being one of the potential candidates for a suitable elastomeric additive to modify asphalt binders, there is a lack of research on using chloroprene rubber (CR). This study evaluates the suitability of using CR to enhance asphalt binder properties, particularly rutting and fatigue performances. Two different grades of asphalt binder (60/70 and 85/100 penetration grade) were modified by 3.5% and 7% CR to meet this end. The conventional physical, high-temperature storage stability, rotational viscosity (RV), dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR), and linear amplitude sweep (LAS) tests were used to examine various features of the CR-modified asphalt binder. Results indicate that CR decreases penetration, ductility, and temperature susceptibility and increases softening point and viscosity of the asphalt binder. Additionally, the CR-modified binder can present acceptable pumpability and workability within the construction temperature range. However, the CR-modified binder has phase separation potential, particularly at high modification contents. Based on the results of MSCR and LAS tests, CR can effectively increase the rutting resistance, elastic recovery, and fatigue life of the asphalt binder. This study deals with the development of asphalt binder performance grading (PG) distribution maps of Morocco and the assessment of climate change effects on pavement design (structural impact), energy consumption, and CO2 emissions (environmental impact). The PG maps were made at the current time (2020) as well as at future times (2050 and 2080) considering climate change. To achieve this aim, the weather data of 30 cities, including maximum and minimum daily air temperatures, were analyzed for temperature zoning over the last 35 years (1985 to 2020). Prospective temperatures between 2050 and 2080 were estimated using a time series analysis. Pavement temperature was then determined using LTPP and SHRP models. Results revealed different asphalt binders PG from PG52-10 to PG76-10 and PG64-16 depending on the selected reliability. The diversity of climate in Morocco may explain this variety of asphalt binder PG. Furthermore, time series analysis showed no changes in the PG distribution map of 2050 compared with the 2020 map, while the map was changed in 2080. The structural and environmental investigations showed that the asphalt layer should be increased by 0.22 cm for each 1 °C temperature increase to maintain the same pavement performance. So, more than 1500 BTUs of energy will be consumed per meter square of the asphalt layer. In addition, ignoring the climate change effect on asphalt pavement decreases the lifetime of pavement by about 6.23 to 31.73% for 1 and 6 °C of temperature increase, respectively. The present study investigates the mechanical and morphological properties of polypropylene (PP)-based nanocomposites reinforced with basalt fiber, graphene nanosheets, and polypropylene-grafted maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA) using Box–Behnken design and response surface methodology (RSM). Using an internal mixer and hot press compression, the reinforcements were added to the matrix at three levels, including 0, 0.75, and 1.5 wt% graphene nanosheets, 0, 7.5, and 15 wt% basalt fiber, and 0, 3, and 6 wt% PP-g-MA. The fiber length was 5 mm and kept fixed for all samples. The samples were subjected to tensile, flexural, and impact tests to obtain the optimum levels of reinforcements. The results of RSM revealed that while the inclusion of graphene nanosheets at 1 wt% improved the tensile, flexural, and impact strength by 15%, 11%, and 16%, respectively, its further inclusion at 1.5 wt% weakened these properties. The incorporation of graphene nanosheets at 1.5 wt% improved the elastic modulus by 69%. Adding basalt fibers to 15 wt% improved the elastic modulus, tensile, flexural, and impact strength by 27%, 85%, 10%, and 8%, respectively. The incorporation of PP-g-MA enhanced the graphene nanosheet/basalt fiber adhesion to the matrix, dispersion, and compatibility, resulting in improved tensile strength and elastic modulus by 18% and 71%, respectively. Based on RSM analysis, adding PP-g-MA to 5 wt% improved the flexural strength by 8% and impact strength by 5% while its further addition to 6 wt% decreased these properties. Atlantic sea cucumber is a benthic marine echinoderm found in Northwest Atlantic waters and is harvested mainly for its body wall. The body wall, along with internal organs and aquaphyrangeal bulb/flower, is a rich source of proteins, where the latter parts are often considered as processing discards. The objective of this research was to produce protein hydrolysates from sea cucumber tissues (body wall, flower, and internal organs) with bioactive properties associated with antioxidants, DNA and LDL cholesterol oxidation inhibition, and angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory effects. The protein hydrolysates were prepared using food-grade commercial enzymes, namely Alcalase, Corolase, and Flavourzyme, individually and in combination, and found that the combination of enzymes exhibited stronger antioxidant potential than the individual enzymes, as well as their untreated counterparts. Similar trends were also observed for the DNA and LDL cholesterol oxidation inhibition and ACE-inhibitory properties of sea cucumber protein hydrolysates, mainly those that were prepared from the flower. Thus, the findings of this study revealed potential applications of sea cucumber-derived protein hydrolysates in functional foods, nutraceuticals, and dietary supplements, as well as natural therapeutics. The family Mullidae represents a hyoid barbel characteristic fish group of the tropical and temperate waters of all major oceans’ ichthyofauna. Despite diverse studies on their morphological characteristics, comparably few molecular investigations have been carried out resulting in several unresolved taxonomic puzzles. This study aimed to assess mitochondrial phylogeny and systematics of several mullid species of the western Indo-Pacific region based on partial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) and cytochrome b (Cytb) gene sequences. Phylogenetic analyses show a group of six nominal genera, in two main clades forming a monophyletic lineage. The main subclades within these clades correspond to genera as defined by morphological studies. One clade includes the species of the genus Upeneichthys, and the second clade includes Mullus, Upeneus, Mulloidichthys, Pseudupeneus, and Parupeneus. The most diverse group, Upeneus, consists of two subclades: (i) U. doriae, U. moluccensis, U. subvittatus, U. supravittatus, and U. vittatus and (ii) U. asymmetricus, U. australiae, U. floros, U. heterospinus, U. japonicus, U. lombok, U. margarethae, U. pori, U. spottocaudalis, U. sundaicus, and U. tragula. The range of average K2P genetic distance for COI varied from 0.1% between U. pori and U. guttatus to 25.7% between Ps. grandisquamis and U. floros. In this research, the tensile properties of polypropylene/natural rubber composite reinforced with perlite nanoparticles produced using a biaxial internal mixer were studied. The mathematical modeling of analysis of variance using the surface response method was used to confirm the experimental results. The role of each materials variable and the weight percentage of natural rubber and pearlite nanoparticles on the tensile properties of the new nanocomposite samples was investigated. It was observed that the values of tensile strength and elongation at break by increasing the amount of natural rubber from 20 wt.% to 40 wt.% and the constant amount of perlite nanoparticles at 3 wt.%, decreased by 14.68% (from 8.92 to 7.61 MPa) and increased by 72% (from 51.05% to 87.81%), respectively. The results obtained from the parameters optimization showed that the maximum values of tensile strength and elongation at break are 8.332 MPa and 74.38% was obtained in the sample with 3.268 wt.% of natural rubber and 4.046 wt.% of perlite nanoparticles, respectively. The scanning electron microscope images showed the positive effect of adding nanoparticles to the polypropylene/natural rubber composite due to the reduction in the size of the elastomeric phase and as a result, the increase in the tensile strength of the composite samples. Also, the proper dispersion of nanoparticles in the polymer matrix phase occurred in the sample with 5 wt.% of perlite nanoparticles and 30 wt.% of natural rubber. However, with increasing the weight percentages of nanoparticles up to 9 wt.%, some agglomerations of pearlite nanoparticles were observed in the thermoplastic phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As the linkages between extreme weather events, changes in climatic conditions and health impacts in exposed populations become clearer, so does the need for climate‐smart decisions aimed at making the public health sector more responsive and resilient. By integrating climate and health information, climate services for health provide robust decision‐support tools. The Lancet Countdown monitoring system uses global climate reanalyses products to track annual changes in a set of health‐related outcomes. In the monitoring system, multiple variables from reanalysis datasets such as ERA5 and ERA5‐Land are retrieved and processed to capture heatwaves, precipitation extremes, wildfires, droughts, warming and ecosystem changes across the globe and over multiple decades. This reanalysis‐derived information is then input into a hazard–exposure–vulnerability framework that delivers, as outcomes, indicators tracking the year‐by‐year impacts of climate‐related hazards on human mortality, labour capacity, physical activity, sentiment, infectious disease transmission, and food security and undernutrition. Building on the reanalysis gridded format, the indicators create worldwide 'maps without gaps' of climate–health linkages. Our experience shows that reanalysis datasets allow standardization across the climate information used in the framework, making the system potentially adaptable to multiple geographical scales. An ongoing challenge is to quantify how the inherent bias of global reanalyses influences indicator outcomes. We foresee the health sector as a key user of reanalysis products. Therefore, public health professionals and health impact modellers should be involved in the co‐development of future iterations of reanalysis datasets, to reach finer spatial resolutions and provide a wider set of health‐relevant climate variables. The single-material overlapping models are incompatible with multi-material wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM). A newly developed generalised model considers dissimilar adjoining beads in multi-material WAAM. The geometric model of dissimilar overlapping beads coupled with an algorithm identifies the process conditions for the two materials to maintain the same bead heights. The model, implemented for stainless-steel and creep-resistant-steel pair, yields significant scientific and practical findings. Compared to a fixed overlapping distance in singlematerial, e.g. 0.66 or 0.738 times the bead width, the multi-material overlapping distance is a complex function of individual bead widths. The bi-metallic interface fusion is affected by the molten metal flow, bead dimensions, and heat input. Contrary to the prevailing notion of a flattop surface in the intermediate layer ideal for multi-layer deposition, a slight hill ensures a defect-free interface. Persimmon is a delicious fruit, and its leaves are considered a valuable ingredient in food, beverage, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic sectors. Traditionally, persimmon leaves (PL) are used as a functional tea in Asian culture to cure different ailments, and are also incorporated into various food and cosmeceutical products as a functional ingredient. PL mainly contain flavonoids, terpenoids, and polysaccharides, along with other constituents such as carotenoids, organic acids, chlorophylls, vitamin C, and minerals. The major phenolic compounds in PL are proanthocyanidins, quercetin, isoquercetin, catechin, flavonol glucosides, and kaempferol. Meanwhile, ursolic acid, rotungenic acid, barbinervic acid, and uvaol are the principal terpenoids. These compounds demonstrate a wide range of pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, anticancer, antihypertensive, antidiabetic, anti-obesity, anti-tyrosinase, antiallergic, and antiglaucoma properties. This review summarizes the latest information on PL, mainly distribution, traditional uses, industrial potential, and bioactive compounds, as well as their potential action mechanisms in exhibiting biological activities. In this study, the effect of pure Ni and Ni-Al2O3 nanocomposite coatings on the corrosion, wear resistance, and thermal conductivity of 316 stainless steel was investigated with the purpose of extending the life span of 316 stainless steel plate heat exchangers. The nanocomposite coatings were developed via an electroplating process in a Watts bath by using different concentration values of Al2O3 nanoparticles (10, 20, and 30 g/L). Electrochemical corrosion tests (polarization and impedance) were run to examine the corrosive performance of the coatings on 3.5% NaCl. The results showed that the Ni-Al2O3 nanocomposite with a reinforcement concentration of 30 g/L had a higher corrosion resistance. A pin on disk wear test demonstrated that, in comparison to 316 stainless steel, the wear resistance of the Ni-Al2O3 nanocomposite (30 g/L) was up to 15% higher while its friction coefficient was up to 10% lower. In addition, as measured via the laser flash method and differential scanning calorimetry, the thermal diffusivity and specific heat capacity of the sample, respectively, were found to be 24% and 30% lower in comparison to 316 stainless steel. Microhardness measurement via a Vickers microindenter showed that the microhardness of the Ni-Al2O3 nanocomposite coating was more than three times higher than that of 316 stainless steel for all the reinforcement concentrations. Further, no flaking or peeling of the deposit was observed after the adhesion test. Until recently, the tentacled butterfly ray, Gymnura tentaculata (Valenciennes in Müller & Henle, 1841), had not been seen for over three decades and had been assessed as Critically Endangered–Possibly Extinct on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. An elasmobranch-specific monitoring program undertaken between October 2019 and July 2020 allowed the discovery of a population of the species along southern Iranian waters. This allowed for a detailed redescription of the morphology as well as generating molecular data for G. tentaculata based on material retrieved during surveys. Gymnura tentaculata is a small (to 85-cm disc width) gymnurid endemic to the northwestern Indian Ocean that can be distinguished from other Gymnura Kuhl in van Hasselt, 1823, by a combination of characteristics, including a small tentacle present on the posterior end of each spiracle, a short tail without bands, and a small dorsal fin always present at its base. Historically, the confirmed range of the species comprised coastal waters of Iran, Pakistan, and India, but it now appears limited to Iranian waters of the eastern Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. The texture assessment of pavement surface plays an important role in nearly all Pavement Management System (PMS). The Surface drainage, which related to the surface texture condition and plays a vital role in pavement safety and accident rate reduction, is a generally neglected part in these systems. The present study conducted to present an image-based method for assessment of the surface drainage capability of pavements. The presented method consists of three steps: image preprocessing, feature extraction and evaluation of pavement surface drainage. In the first step, a Modified Shearlet Transform (MST) with specific filter and parameters is presented for image denoising and then a set of morphological features are extracted to present proper evaluation parameters for surface drainage assessment. Finally, a method based on feature selection for surface drainage evaluation proposed and a classification for the pavements based on surface drainage quality by the C5.0 algorithm conducted considering the extracted parameters. Phenolic compounds are ubiquitous plant secondary metabolites that possess various biological activities and are known to interact with proteins, altering their structure and properties. Therefore, interactions between these compounds and proteins has gained increasing attention due to their potential benefits to human health and for exploitation by the food industry. Phenolic compounds and proteins can form complexes via covalent linkages and/or non-covalent interactions through hydrophobic, electrostatic, van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonding. This review describes possible mechanisms of phenol-protein complex formation, their physiological action and activities that are important in the food industry, and possible outcomes in the terms of molecular docking and simulation analysis. The conformational changes of the protein upon binding with polyphenols can lead to the folding or unfolding of the protein molecules, forming insoluble or soluble complexes. The concentration of polyphenols, their molecular weight and structure, ions/cofactors and conditions of the system determine the precipitation or solubilization of the complex, affecting their nutritional and functional properties as well as their bioactivities. In this regard, molecular docking and simulation studies of phenolic-protein interactions allows comprehensive virtual screening of competitive/non-competitive and site-specific/non-specific conjugation of phenolics with different protein targets and facilitates understanding the observed effects. The docking analysis of flavonoids with enzymes and milk proteins has indicated their potential application in producing nutraceuticals and functional foods. Thus, combining molecular docking and simulation studies with experimental techniques is vital for better understanding the reactions that take place during digestion to engineer and manufacture novel food ingredients with desirable pharmacological properties and as potential food additives. Diaphragmatic hernias are an uncommon cause of abdominal pain in horses. The following case report describes a diaphragmatic hernia in 2 adult horses with signs of acute colic. A six-year-old stallion and a seven-year-old mare were referred to the emergency duty for severe abdominal pain; for a six-month period from late 2021 to early 2022. The horses were subjected to explorative laparotomy, which revealed a migration of the large colon associated with volvulus (in stallion); and small intestine protrusion (in mare) in thoracic space. Necropsy revealed a diaphragmatic chronic rupture (approximately 13 centimeters in diameter) in the left mid-region with the protrusion of the large colon in the thoracic cavity in the male horse; and a diaphragmatic acute rupture (approximately 3 centimeters in diameter) in the left dorsolateral region with the incarceration of jejunum in thoracic cavity in the mare. Insoluble-bound phenolics (IBPs) are extensively found in the cell wall and distributed in various tissues/organs of plants, mainly cereals, legumes, and pulses. In particular, IBPs are mainly distributed in the protective tissues, such as seed coat, pericarp, and hull, and are also available in nutritional tissues, including germ, epicotyl, hypocotyl radicle, and endosperm, among others. IBPs account for 20–60% of the total phenolics in food matrices and can exceed 70% in leaves, flowers, peels, pulps, seeds, and other counterparts of fruits and vegetables, and up to 99% in cereal brans. These phenolics are mostly covalently bound to various macromolecules such as hemicellulose, cellulose, structural protein, arabinoxylan, and pectin, which can be extracted by acid, alkali, or enzymatic hydrolysis along with various thermal and non-thermal treatments. IBPs obtained from various sources exhibited a wide range of biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, anticancer, anti-obesity, and anti-diabetic properties. In this contribution, the chemistry, distribution, biological activities, metabolism, and extraction methods of IBPs, and how they are affected by various treatments, are summarized. Consumption of phytochemicals-rich foods shows the health effect on some chronic diseases. However, the bioaccessibility of these phytochemicals is extremely low, and they are often consumed in the diet along with the food matrix. The food matrix can be described as a complex assembly of various physical and chemical interactions that take place between the compounds present in the food. Some studies indicated that the physiological response and the health benefits of phytochemicals are resultant in these interactions. Some food substrates inhibit the absorption of phytochemicals via this interaction. Moreover, processing technologies have been developed to facilitate the release and/or to increase the accessibility of phytochemicals in plants or breakdown of the food matrix. Food processing processes may disrupt the activity of phytochemicals or reduce bioaccessibility. Enhancement of functional and sensorial attributes of phytochemicals in the daily diet may be achieved by modifying the food matrix and food processing in appropriate ways. Therefore, this review concisely elaborated on the mechanism and the influence of food matrix in different parts of the digestive tract in the human body, the chemical interaction between phytochemicals and other compounds in a food matrix, and the various food processing technologies on the bioaccessibility and chemical interaction of dietary phytochemicals. Moreover, the enhancing of phytochemical bioaccessibility through food matrix design and the positive/negative of food processing for dietary phytochemicals was also discussed in this study. Wheat and rice play a vital role in human nutrition and food security. A better understanding of the potential health benefits associated with consuming these cereals, combined with studies by plant scientists and food chemists to view the entire food value chain from the field, pre and post-harvest processing, and subsequent "fork" consumption, may provide the necessary tools to optimize wheat and rice production towards the goal of better human health improvement and food security, providing tools to better adapt to the challenges associated with climate change. Since the available literature usually focuses on only one food chain segment, this narrative review was designed to address the identities and concentration of phenolics of these cereal crops from a farm-to-fork perspective. Wheat and rice genetics, phenolic databases, antioxidant properties, and potential health effects are summarized. These cereals contain much more than phenolic acids, having significant concentrations of flavonoids (including anthocyanins) and proanthocyanidins in a cultivar-dependent manner. Their potential health benefits in vitro have been extensively studied. According to a number of in vivo studies, consumption of whole wheat, wheat bran, whole rice, and rice bran may be strategies to improve health.
