Background: There were seven novel and easily accessed insulin resistance (IR) surrogates established, including the Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI), the visceral adiposity index (VAI), lipid accumulation product (LAP), triglyceride glucose (TyG) index, TyG-body mass index (TyG-BMI), TyG-waist circumference (TyG-WC) and TyG-waist to height ratio (TyG-WHtR). We aimed to explore the association between the seven IR surrogates and incident coronary heart disease (CHD), and to compare their predictive powers among Chinese population. Methods: This is a 10-year prospective cohort study conducted in China including 6393 participants without cardiovascular disease (CVD) at baseline. We developed Cox regression analyses to examine the association of IR surrogates with CHD (hazard ratio [HR], 95% confidence intervals [CI]). Moreover, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was performed to compare the predictive values of these indexes for incident CHD by the areas under the ROC curve (AUC). Results: During a median follow-up period of 10.25 years, 246 individuals newly developed CHD. Significant associations of the IR surrogates (excepted for VAI) with incident CHD were found in our study after fully adjustment, and the fifth quintile HRs (95% CIs) for incident CHD were respectively 2.055(1.216-3.473), 1.446(0.948-2.205), 1.753(1.099-2.795), 2.013(1.214-3.339), 3.169(1.926-5.214), 2.275(1.391-3.719) and 2.309(1.419-3.759) for CVAI, VAI, LAP, TyG, TyG-BMI, TyG-WC and TyG-WHtR, compared with quintile 1. Furthermore, CVAI showed maximum predictive capacity for CHD among these seven IR surrogates with the largest AUC: 0.632(0.597,0.667). Conclusion: The seven IR surrogates (excepted for VAI) were independently associated with higher prevalence of CHD, among which CVAI is the most powerful predictor for CHD incidence in Chinese populations. Rationale: Limited cohort studies have evaluated chronic effects of high fine particulate matter (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm [PM2.5]) exposure on lung cancer.Objectives: To investigate the response pattern of lung cancer associated with high PM2.5 exposure.Methods: A Chinese cohort of 118,551 participants was followed up from 1992 to 2015. By incorporating PM2.5 exposure at 1 km spatial resolution generated using the satellite-based model during 2000-2015, we estimated the association between lung cancer and time-weighted average PM2.5 concentration using Cox proportional hazard models.Measurements and Main Results: A total of 844 incident lung cancer cases were identified during 915,053 person-years of follow-up. Among them, 701 lung cancer deaths occurred later. The exposure-response curves for lung cancer associated with PM2.5 exposure were nonlinear, with steeper slopes at the higher concentrations. Adjusted for age, sex, geographical region, urbanization, education level, smoking status, alcohol consumption, work-related physical activity, and body mass index, participants exposed to the second-fifth quintiles of PM2.5 had higher risk for lung cancer incidence than those exposed to the first quintile, with hazard ratios of 1.44 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.10-1.88), 1.49 (95% CI, 1.12-1.99), 2.08 (95% CI, 1.42-3.04), and 2.45 (95% CI, 1.83-3.29), respectively. The corresponding hazard ratios for lung cancer mortality were 1.83 (95% CI, 1.33-2.50), 1.80 (95% CI, 1.29-2.53), 2.50 (95% CI, 1.62-3.86), and 2.95 (95% CI, 2.09-4.17), respectively.Conclusions: We provide strong evidence that high PM2.5 exposure leads to an elevated risk of lung cancer incidence and mortality, highlighting that remarkable public health benefits could be obtained from the improvement of air quality in highly polluted regions. Background: Early-stage chronic kidney disease has been suggested to be correlated with cognitive decline, but the association has rarely been explored in the oldest old. Subjects and methods: This prospective study included 284 Chinese participants aged 80 years or older with serum creatinine levels ,150 μmol/L. The median follow-up time was 3.3 years, and 247 (87.0%) participants provided valid data at their last visit. Kidney function was evaluated by measuring the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) at baseline, and cognitive function was evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) at both baseline and annual visits. A reliable decrease in the MMSE score over the follow-up period was observed based on a Reliable Change Index of 1.645 (equivalent to a 90% confidence interval [CI]), which was used to define cognitive decline. Poisson regression models were built to analyze the association between baseline kidney function and cognitive decline. Results: A total of 18 (7.3%) cases of incident cognitive decline were observed during the follow-up period. After adjusting for potential confounders, the relative risk of developing cognitive decline was 4.03 (95% CI 1.09&-13.81) among participants with an eGFR of 30&-59 mL/min/1.73 m2 compared to participants with an eGFR of ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2. background Blood pressure (BP) hyper-reactivity to the cold pressor test (CPT) has been suggested as a predictor of hypertension. We examined whether BP reactivity to the CPT was associated with hypertension incidence among the Genetic Epidemiology Network of Salt Sensitivity (GenSalt) study participants from China. methods A total of 1,961 GenSalt study participants without any antihypertensive treatment completed the CPT at the baseline examination. Hypertension status was assessed at baseline (2003–2005) and 2 follow- up visits (2008–2009 and 2011–2012). results After adjustment for multiple covariates, both systolic BP (SBP) and diastolic BP reactivity to the CPT were significantly associated with hypertension incidence. For example, the multivariable adjusted odds ratios (ORs, 95% CI) of developing hypertension were 0.92 (0.66, 1.29), 1.42 (1.03, 1.97), and 1.45 (1.05, 2.00) for participants with maximum SBP responses of 6.7–12.0, 12.1–19.2, and ≥19.3 mm Hg, respectively, compared to those with responses of <6.7 mm Hg (P for trend = 0.006). Likewise, the multivariable-adjusted ORs (95% CI) of hypertension were 1.12 (0.79, 1.57), 1.62 (1.15, 2.29), and 1.82 (1.30, 2.55) for participants with the area under the curve of SBP responses of 3.0–16.0, 16.1–29.9, and ≥ 30.0 mm Hg·min, respectively, compared to those with responses of < 3.0 mm Hg·min (P for trend = 0.0001). The associations between BP reactivity variables and the risk of hypertension were not different among subgroups of sex, age, and baseline BP levels. conclusions BP hyperreactivity to the cold stimulus may predict the risk of hypertension among Chinese adults. Background: Alcohol consumption is heritable, but genetic susceptibility to drinking behavior has not been investigated widely in genome-wide association studies. Objective: We aimed to identify susceptibility loci for drinking behavior (drinkers compared with nondrinkers) in Han Chinese. Design: We performed 2 genome-wide association studies including 1420 drinkers and 3590 nondrinkers in discovery, followed by a de novo replication analysis comprising 4896 drinkers and 13,293 nondrinkers. DNA samples of the subjects were collected for genotyping. Results: The association results of drinking behavior (drinkers or nondrinkers) showed a cluster of single nucleotide polymorphisms at 12q24 in discovery (P < 5 x 10-8), with the strongest association for rs11066280 near C12otf51 (P-combined = 3.26 x 10-215) Moreover, we observed the association with drinking behavior for a functional variant in ALDH2 at 12q24 (rs671, P-discovery = 5.17 x 10-35). We also identified the association between rs11066280 and daily alcohol intake among drinkers (P-combined = 4.01 x 10-21) Conclusion: Our data indicate that common variants at 12q24 may contribute to the susceptibility of drinking behavior in Han Chinese.
