This study describes the prevalent sedimentological and geochemical patterns and investigates the environmental status of the bottom of Gialova lagoon, a highly vulnerable coastal site of the EU's Natura 2000 network. For this task, lithological, geochemical, and microfaunal analyses of sediment samples were combined with a high-resolution bathymetric survey. Potential pollution was determined using geochemical-based (EF, I-geo, and PLI) and faunal (Foram-AMBI) indices. We find that sedimentation is mainly controlled by the bottom morphology, hydrodynamic variations, and biogenic productivity of the lagoon. The application of the multivariate factor analysis technique revealed four dominant factors explaining the geochemical processes occurring in the lagoon. The first factor, namely "terrigenous aluminosilicates associated with Corg vs. autochthonous biogenic carbonates", discriminates the deposition of detrital sediments, related to the high adsorption of heavy metals—versus bioclastic sediments. The "sulfides" factor represents an anoxic phase of the lagoon floor, whereas the "Mn-oxyhydroxides" factor indicates increased manganese content with several compounded trace elements. The "phosphate" factor reveals multiple sources of phosphorus in the lagoon. The lagoon bottom shows negligible to minor contamination in heavy metals, except Mo and Pb, which induce moderate pollution levels. Patras Gulf pockmark field (Western Greece) is a tectonically controlled field that has been activated at least twice by strong earthquakes (M5.4, 14 July 1993 and M6.4, 8 June 2008), and episodic gas seepages have been recorded in the past using geophysical means. A distributed temperature sensor (DTS) system was deployed inside a shallow pockmark and along an active fault at the northern end of the field. This ongoing experiment represents the first long-term monitoring ever conducted on gas-bearing pockmarks and active faults by the DTS system. For now, we have acquired and analyzed data regarding about 1.56 years. One of the primary objectives of this study is to establish methodological queues for data processing and analysis, including spectral analysis and incomplete data treatment techniques, to be standardized for use in further stages of the experiment. Spectral analysis was proven capable of separating the temperature footprint of background environmental components, such as sea-atmosphere heat flux, tides, and winds/waves, from high-frequency temperature residuals. Those residuals represent unusual events that might be correlated to seismicity. Monitoring the causal relationship between seismic activity and seabed water temperature changes in the field was thus attempted. No significant local earthquakes occurred during the monitoring period. Although the relation between seismicity and irregular seabed water temperature events was not systematic, we postulate that four thermal events have a causative link with the local seismicity. The Patras Gulf Pockmark field is located in shallow waters offshore Patras City (Greece) and is considered one of the most spectacular and best-documented fluid seepage activities in the Ionian Sea. The field has been under investigation since 1996, though surveying was partially sparse and fragmentary. This paper provides a complete mapping of the field and generates new knowledge regarding the fluid escape structures, the fluid pathways, their origin and the link with seismic activity. For this, data sets were acquired utilising high-resolution marine remote sensing techniques, including multibeam echosounders, side-scan sonars, sub-bottom profilers and remotely operated vehicles, and laboratory techniques focusing on the chemical composition of the escaping fluids. The examined morphometric parameters and spatial distribution patterns of the pockmarks are directly linked to tectonic structures. Acoustic anomalies related to the presence of gas in sediments and in the water column document the activity of the field at present and in the past. Methane is the main component of the fluids and is of microbial origin. Regional and local tectonism, together with the Holocene sedimentary deposits, appear to be the main contributors to the growth of the field. Seagrasses are flowering plants, adapted to marine environments, that are highly diverse in the Mediterranean Sea and provide a variety of ecosystem services. It is commonly recognized that light availability sets the lower limit of seagrass bathymetric distribution, while the upper limit depends on the level of bottom disturbance by currents and waves. In this work, detailed distribution of seagrass, obtained through geoacoustic habitat mapping and optical ground truthing, is correlated to wave energy and light on the seafloor of the Marine Protected Area of Laganas Bay, Zakynthos Island, Greece, where the seagrasses Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa form extensive meadows. Mean wave energy on the seafloor was estimated through wave propagation modeling, while the photosynthetically active radiation through open-access satellite-derived light parameters, reduced to the seafloor using the detailed acquired bathymetry. A significant correlation of seagrass distribution with wave energy and light was made clear, allowing for performing fine-scale predictive seagrass mapping using a random forest classifier. The predicted distributions exhibited >80% overall accuracy for P. oceanica and >90% for C. nodosa, indicating that fine-scale seagrass predictive mapping in the Mediterranean can be performed robustly through bottom wave energy and light, especially when detailed bathymetric data exist to allow for accurate estimations. The primary objective of this research is to demonstrate advanced surveying methods and techniques for coastal erosion identification and monitoring in a densely human-populated coastline, the southern coastline of the Gulf of Patras (Greece), which diachronically suffers erosion problems expected to become worse in the forthcoming years due to climate change and human intervention. Its importance lies in the fact that it presents a robust methodology on how all modern scientific knowledge and techniques should be used in coastal erosion problems. The presented methods include the use of satellite and aerial photo imaging, shallow seabed bathymetry and morphology, sediment sampling, geotechnical investigations, as well as hydrodynamic modelling. The results are extensively analyzed in terms of their importance in coastal erosion studies and are cross-validated to define those areas most vulnerable to erosion. Towards this scope, the seabed erosion rate produced by hydrodynamic modelling is compared with the coastal vulnerability index (CVI) calculations performed in the examined area to identify which coastal zones are under a regime of intensive erosion. The results between the CVI and the seabed erosion rate appear to coincide in terms of the erosion potential, especially in zones where the vulnerability regime has been calculated as being high or very high, with the P. oceanica meadows playing an important role in reducing erosion. In the present paper, a methodological scheme, bringing together common Acoustic Seabed Classification (ASC) systems and a powerful data decomposition approach, called Independent Component Analysis (ICA), is demonstrated regarding its suitability for detecting small targets in Side Scan Sonar imagery. Traditional ASC systems extract numerous texture descriptors, leading to a large feature vector, the dimensionality of which is reduced by means of data decomposition techniques, usually Principal Component Analysis (PCA), prior to classification. However, in the target detection issue, data decomposition should point towards finding components that represent sub-ordinary image information (i.e., small targets) rather than a dominant one. ICA has long been proved to be suitable for separating targets from a background, and this study represents a novel exhibition of its applicability to Side Scan Sonar (SSS) images. The present study attempts to build a fully automated target detection approach that combines image based feature extraction, ICA, and unsupervised classification. The suitability of the proposed approach has been demonstrated using an SSS data-set containing more than 70 manmade targets, most of them metallic, validated through a marine magnetic survey or ground truthing inspection. The method exhibited very good performance as it was able to detect more than 77% of the targets and it produced less than seven false alarms per km². Moreover, it was compared to cases where, in the exact same methodological scheme, no decomposition technique is used, or PCA is employed instead of ICA, achieving the highest detection rate, but, more importantly, producing more than six times less false alarms, thus proving that ICA successfully manages to maximize target to background separation. Helike, the Achaean Dodecapolis capital, in the Corinth Gulf, Greece, was, according to historical sources, devastated and disappeared from sight during an earthquake followed by sea invasion on to land in 373/372 B.C. A marine remote sensing survey, which was carried out to examine a landslide following a 6.2 R earthquake in 1995, that affected the coastal and near-shore delta plain zone on which Helike stood, accompanied by onshore borehole data, enabled us to postulate the geological processes leading to the Helike catastrophe. Helike was initially leveled during a 6 to 6.7 R earthquake; it is postulated to have then submerged following a translational landslide caused by liquefaction. In many remote-sensing applications, measured data are a strong function of the environment in which they are collected. This paper introduces a new context-dependent classification algorithm to address and exploit this phenomenon. Within the proposed framework, an ensemble of classifiers is constructed, each associated with a particular environment. The key to the method is that the relative importance of each object (i.e., data point) during the learning phase for a given classifier is controlled via a modulating factor based on the similarity of auxiliary environment features. Importantly, the number of classifiers to learn and all other associated model parameters are inferred automatically from the training data. The promise of the proposed method is demonstrated on classification tasks seeking to distinguish underwater targets from clutter in synthetic aperture sonar imagery. The measured data were collected with an autonomous underwater vehicle during several large experiments, conducted at sea between 2008 and 2012, in different geographical locations with diverse environmental conditions. For these data, the environment was quantified by features (extracted from the imagery directly) measuring the anisotropy and the complexity of the seabed. Experimental results suggest that the classification performance of the proposed approach compares favorably to conventional classification algorithms as well as state-of-the-art context-dependent methods. In this paper, the TargAn software package that is dedicated to parameterizing regions of interest (ROIs) in greyscale images that reflect backscatter information derived by marine geo-acoustical instrumentation (e.g. Side Scan Sonar and Multi-Beam Echo-Sounder) is presented. The ROIs, whose boundaries are marked out either manually or via simple segmentation techniques, are analyzed for as many as 37 features. The adopted and developed methodologies lead to the extraction of: (1) grey-level intensity (1st order) and texture analysis statistics estimated from the inner ROI, (2) descriptors that measure the separation of the ROI in comparison to the intensity characteristics of the peripheral seabed, (3) shape geometry descriptors of the ROI's boundary itself and (4) regional statistics of distinct (segmented) objects possibly included in the ROI. TargAn is implemented in Matlab with a graphical user interface that helps the user to have control over the digitization, segmentation and feature extraction processes involved. It also provides tools for the construction of compact geo-databases, suitable for geostatistical analysis and visualization in popular Geographical Information Systems, concerning the extracted descriptors and the geographic features (e.g. ROIs' boundaries, skeletons, segmented objects) that have been considered for ROIs' analyses. The TargAn software is particularly useful when large amounts of image ROIs need to be objectively quantified and is demonstrated through two case studies regarding Side Scan Sonar imageries. Posidonia oceanica, a key seagrass species of the Mediterranean Sea, shows clear signs of regression throughout the Mediterranean and illegal trawling is recognized as one of the main causes. We examined the condition of a P. oceanica meadow in Alykes Bay (Zakynthos Island, western Greece), a typical Mediterranean littoral area where illegal trawling is common practice, in respect to the total area affected, and in terms of possible ecological substitution. A side scan sonar (SSS) survey of the seafloor provided an image of the condition of the meadow and biological sampling evaluated the ecological status in affected meadow areas. SSS images revealed that trawling has a serious effect on the meadow, with 11% of the vegetated area being abraded, and the affected areas were also found to be fully colonized by the invasive alga Caulerpa racemosa. Moreover, unusually high densities of the polychaete Sabella pavonina were detected in the affected areas among C. racemosa fronds. Recolonization by P. oceanica of the affected meadow areas that have been colonized by C. racemosa seems improbable considering the allelopathic interactions between the species, with the alga displaying phytotoxic properties through caulerpenyne production and deterioration of the sediment quality. The documentation of underwater cultural heritage (UCH) is the basis for sustainable maritime development including its protection, preservation, and incorporation in coastal zone management plans. In this study, we present a multidisciplinary, non-intrusive downscale approach for the documentation of UCH implemented on the coastal area of Aegina Island, Greece, where a unique submerged harbour complex is preserved. This approach succeeded in obtaining information that serves both geomorphological and archaeological purposes in a time- and cost-effective way, while obtaining information of centimeters to millimeters scale. The geomorphology of the area was mapped in detail through marine geophysical means while ancient submerged conical rubble structures and breakwaters were documented using automatic seafloor segmentation techniques, revealing previously unknown sites of archaeological interest. The structures' parameters were extracted from the acoustic data to analyze their morphometry, while photogrammetry was realized using a Remotely Operated Vehicle to expose their micro-structure. The spatial distribution of the structures revealed the construction of a well-planned harbour complex with multiple passages and different possible functionalities. Finally, through the structures' morphometric analysis (geometry and terrain statistical parameters) their preservation status was revealed, demonstrating the anthropogenic impact on the submerged ancient structures due to the modern harbor activity. A series of marine remote sensing and ground-truth surveys were carried out at NW Gulf of Patras (W. Greece). The same area was surveyed in 1971 by Throckmorton, Edgerton and Yalouris, who are among the pioneers in the application of remote sensing techniques to underwater archaeology. The researchers conducted a surface reconnaissance survey to locate the site where the Battle of Lepanto took place on 7 October 1571. Their remote sensing surveying resulted in a map of two "target" areas that showed promise as possible remnants of wrecks from that battle and proposed a ground truth survey for their identification and in the detection of two modern shipwrecks. The ground truth survey was never fulfilled. The objectives of our repeat surveys, which were completed 50 years later, were to relocate the findings of this pioneer survey with higher spatial and vertical resolution, to ground-truth the targets, fulfilling their investigation, and to interpret the newly collected data in the light of modern developments in marine geosciences. Our repeat surveys detected mound clusters and individual mounds referred to "target" areas. These mounds could be interpreted as the surface expression of mud and fluid expulsion from the underlying deformed soft sediments. The ground truth survey demonstrated that the tops of mounds represent biogenic mounds. The ROV survey did not show any indication of wreck remnants of the Battle of Lepanto within the two survey areas. The site formation processes of the two modern shipwrecks were also studied in detail. Two noticeable seafloor morphological features were detected around the wreck sites; field of small-sized pockmarks and seafloor depressions. We would like to dedicate this work to the memory of Peter Throckmorton and Harold E. Edgerton, who are among the pioneers in the formative years of underwater archaeology in Greece. Amvrakikos Gulf is a Mediterranean landlocked, fjord-like embayment and marine protected area suffering from natural, human-induced hypoxia/anoxia and massive fish mortality events. Seasonal marine geophysical and oceanographic surveys were conducted focusing on the water-circulation patterns at the sill and the spatial-seasonal distribution of dissolved oxygen (DO) in the gulf. Detailed surveys at the sill, the only communication route between the gulf and the open sea, revealed a two-layer water circulation pattern (top brackish outflow–bottom seawater inflow) and the role of the tide in the daily water exchange. Statistical analysis of the known natural drivers of DO distribution (density difference between the Ionian Sea and Amvrakikos, river inflow, wind) revealed that horizontal density gradients strongly affect anoxia reduction and seafloor oxygenation, while river inflow and wind mainly oxygenate volume/areas located above or within the pycnocline range, with DO concentrations > 2 mg/L. Complex geomorphology with well-formed internal basins contributes to the development and preservation of low DO conditions below the pycnocline. Finally, 43% of the seafloor and 36% of the gulf's total water volume are permanently hypoxic, and reach a maximum of 70% and 62%, respectively, in September and July. Amfilochia Bay (Eastern Amvrakikos Gulf, Western Greece), a complex marine area affected by tectonism, was investigated for seabed seepage manifestations and for possible inter-relationships between shallow gas accumulations and hypoxia. For this purpose, an integrated research methodology that combined geophysical, geochemical, and hydrographic surveys was applied. Marine geophysical and bathymetric surveys led to the discovery of a gas-induced pockmark group in the study area. Oceanographic surveying confirmed that the bay is hypoxic/anoxic below a depth of 15 m (dissolved oxygen from ~4 to 60 μM). Very weak CH4 seepage was detected in correspondence to the pockmark group that seemed to slightly enhance the hypoxic environment locally and close to the seabed, with no effect in shallower waters and the oxycline. Methane isotopic analysis showed variable carbon isotopic composition (from −41‰ to −86‰) which could be either related to differential CH4 oxidation or mixing between microbial and thermogenic gas. However, the pathway of degassing is clearly related to the fault-controlled pockmark group. A protrusion mound, which has erroneously been reported as a submarine "volcano" since 1876, could be the result of mud volcanism based on the geophysical data of this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bottom trawl footprints are a prominent environmental impact of deep-sea fishery that was revealed through the evolution of underwater remote sensing technologies. Image processing techniques have been widely applied in acoustic remote sensing, but accurate trawl-mark (TM) detection is underdeveloped. The paper presents a new algorithm for the automatic detection and spatial quantification of TMs that is implemented on sidescan sonar (SSS) images of a fishing ground from the Gulf of Patras in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. This method inspects any structure of the local seafloor in an environmentally adaptive procedure, in order to overcome the predicament of analyzing noisy and complex SSS images of the seafloor. The initial preprocessing stage deals with radiometric inconsistencies. Then, multiplex filters in the spatial domain are performed with multiscale rotated Haar-like features through integral images that locate the TM-like forms and additionally discriminate the textural characteristics of the seafloor. The final TMs are selected according to their geometric and background environment features, and the algorithm successfully produces a set of trawling-ground quantification values that could be established as a baseline measure for the status assessment of a fishing ground. In this work, multibeam echosounder (MBES) and dual frequency sidescan sonar (SSS) data are combined to map the shallow (5–100 m) benthic habitats of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos (NMPZ), Greece, a Marine Protected Area (MPA). NMPZ hosts extensive prairies of the protected Mediterranean phanerogams Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa, as well as reefs and sandbanks. Seafloor characterization is achieved using the multi-frequency acoustic backscatter of: (a) the two simultaneous frequencies of the SSS (100 and 400 kHz) and (b) the MBES (180 kHz), as well as the MBES bathymetry. Overall, these high-resolution datasets cover an area of 84 km2 with ground coverage varying from 50% to 100%. Image texture, terrain and backscatter angular response analyses are applied to the above, to extract a range of statistical features. Those have different spatial densities and so they are combined through an object-based approach based on the full-coverage 100-kHz SSS mosaic. Supervised classification is applied to data models composed of operationally meaningful combinations between the above features, reflecting single-sonar or multi-sonar mapping scenarios. Classification results are validated against a detailed expert interpretation habitat map making use of extensive ground-truth data. The relative gain of one system or one feature extraction method or another are thoroughly examined. The frequency-dependent separation of benthic habitats showcases the potentials of multi-frequency backscatter and bathymetry from different sonars, improving evidence-based interpretations of shallow benthic habitats. Up until the last ten years, remote sensing data and especially high-resolution satellite data and airphotos were mainly used in shallow water mapping. The evolution and low cost of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) provides a new tool for coastal area monitoring. This paper presents the synergistic use of a small commercial UAV and an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) for beachrock mapping in Syros Island, Greece. RGB images collected with a quadcopter were processed using Structure from Motion (SFM) photogrammetry in order to create digital surface models (DSMs) and orthophotos of the coastline. A beachrock lying in shallow waters was detected and mapped using the UAV derived products. At the same time, a USV equipped with a compact side scan sonar (SSS) and bathymetric sonar system, provided the shape of the beachrock by mosaicking the backscatter strength of the SSS. In order to evaluate the results of the UAV and USV data derivatives, the beachrock perimeter and its depth were also mapped using a differential global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receiver. During the fieldwork, samples from the beachrock were collected and analyzed in the laboratory. The mineralogical composition of the bulk samples was determined by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Further petrographic study was also performed by petrographic polarizing microscope, macroscope, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Beachrock samples are classified as fine to medium grain sandstones and conglomerates. The mineral compositions of their grains and lithoclasts reflect the bedrocks of Syros Island (mainly metamorphic rocks) while a micritic high-Mg calcite constitutes the cement of these rocks.
