We aimed to determine the efficacy of the various available oral, topical, and procedural treatment options for hair loss in individuals with androgenic alopecia. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, a systematic review of the National Library of Medicine was performed. Overall, 141 unique studies met our inclusion criteria. We demonstrate that many over the counter (e.g. topical minoxidil, supplements, low-level light treatment), prescription (e.g. oral minoxidil, finasteride, dutasteride), and procedural (e.g. platelet-rich plasma, fractionated lasers, hair transplantation) treatments successfully promote hair growth, highlighting the superiority of a multifaceted and individualized approach to management. Background: The hair transplantation has become widely popular aesthetic procedure. Hair transplantation being a relatively new field in maxillofacial surgery, several aspects raise issues and controversies. Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE) are two commonly used and accepted techniques. Further, hair transplantation has been successfully used in correction of alopecia, cleft lip scars, post-burn or surgical scars, vitiligo and as an adjuvant to other maxillofacial procedures. Several maxillofacial surgeons have incorporated hair transplantation procedure into their aesthetic practice successfully. Sound knowledge of surgical technique, armamentarium and proper surgical planning are important for good results. A lot of debate has been there on minimum qualification for performing hair transplantation. Hair transplantation has evolved as a practice since the 1960ʹs with advances in technology and surgical technique. With various surgical techniques in existence, patients and practitioners have an abundance of options to curate the best results for the patient. However, with many options come various benefits and consequences that must be examined on a patient-by-patient basis. This review article sought to examine the various surgical modalities of hair transplantation, to outline the pros and cons of various techniques, and to help outline considerations when choosing a given surgical technique. The evolutionary process of modern hair transplantation began with the plug era and, transitioning through a period of minigrafting and micrografting, finally led to follicular unit transplantation (FUT). Apart from the expansion of donor:recipient ratio, this technique produces an excellent esthetic result, indistinguishable from the natural hair. The merit of strip harvest lies in the maximum amount of follicular unit harvest, minimizing the amount of hair follicle transection, and producing a single scar, irrespective of number of sessions. Follicular unit extraction (FUE), now named as follicular unit excision, is one of the methods of harvesting hair follicles from the donor area for implanting in the recipient area. The occipital scalp area is the most common donor area, but nonscalp donor areas like beard, chest, and other hairy body parts can be used as donor hair follicle area. The extraction of the hair follicle leaves a tiny circular scar over the donor area. Over the past 20 years, various devices for FUE have been developed, starting from manual, simple motorized to highly advanced motors with rotation, oscillation, and vibration. Similarly, different types of punch are used: dull, sharp, ultrasharp, serrated, hybrid and specially designed punch blade for long hair follicles harvesting in various diameters from 0.7 mm to 1.1 mm. Background: Hair loss affects most people at some point in their lifetime, causing anxiety and decreased self‐esteem. There are multiple surgical and nonsurgical treatments available, with the surgical options having greater and longer‐lasting effects. Such treatments have evolved over time with advances in technology and research, with numerous patients researching these treatments on Google. Many surgeons who provide these treatments belong to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons (ISHRS). Aims: To investigate trends in surgical hair restoration treatment from both the surgeon and patient perspectives. Methods: Patient epidemiological and surgical data from the ISHRS were combined with search trend data from Google to analyze changing trends in surgical hair restoration treatment. Results: Worldwide Internet searches for "hair transplant" have increased from 2004 to the present. Follicular unit excision (FUE) has supplanted follicular unit transplant (FUT) as the most popular hair transplant performed. Since 2004, there has been an increase in both nonsurgical and surgical female patients. Beard and eyebrow transplants have increased in popularity. Google searches follow this trend. Nonsurgical treatments such as platelet‐rich plasma (PRP) are being searched more frequently. Hair restoration clinics and Google searches were affected adversely by the COVID‐19 pandemic. Conclusion: Technological advances in available therapies, improvement in delivery systems, changes in hair fashion, and global events have direct impact on hair restoration treatments offered by physicians and researched by patients. Patients are increasingly seeking effective hair loss treatments. The internet and social media are popular sources of health information, but the quality and reliability of the content available to patients is highly variable. More than two thirds of American adults reported using YouTube in 2019. We investigated public interest in hair loss treatment information on YouTube and evaluated the quality of health information in videos with high viewer engagement. In July 2020, we used Google Trends, limited to YouTube searches, to analyze relative interest in hair loss treatments worldwide. We searched YouTube using nonsurgical and surgical hair loss treatment terms and we analyzed the retrieved video content. The DISCERN tool was used to evaluate the quality of health information in the hair loss treatment videos with highest viewer engagement. There is increasing public interest in YouTube searches for hair loss treatments. A large number of hair loss treatment videos are available on YouTube, but potential patients are likely to access mostly new content created by well‐subscribed channels. Videos with high viewer engagement contain information that can be useful in guiding treatment decisions, but tend to be biased because they are intended to promote dermatology and hair restoration clinics. Patients are using YouTube as a source of hair loss treatment information. Videos created by hair restoration experts contain reliable information, but their quality can be improved by providing links to other sources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Otitis media (OM) is an infective and inflammatory disorder known to be a major cause of hearing impairment across all age groups. Both acute and chronic OM result in substantial healthcare utilization related to antibiotic prescription and surgical procedures necessary for its management. Although several studies provided evidence of genetics playing a significant role in the susceptibility to OM, we had limited knowledge about the genes associated with OM until recently. Here we have summarized the known genetic factors that confer susceptibility to various forms of OM in mice and in humans and their genetic load, along with associated cellular signaling pathways. Spotlighted in this review are fucosyltransferase (FUT) enzymes, which have been implicated in the pathogenesis of OM. A comprehensive understanding of the functions of OM-associated genes may provide potential opportunities for its diagnosis and treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABO blood serotype A is known to be associated with risk of gastric cancer (GC), but little is known how ABO alleles and the fucosyltransferase (FUT) enzymes and genes which are involved in Lewis antigen formation [and in Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) binding and pathogenicity] may be related to GC risk in a European population. The authors conducted an investigation of 32 variants at ABO and FUT1-7 loci and GC risk in a case-control study of 365 cases and 1,284 controls nested within the EPIC cohort (the EPIC-Eurgast study). Four variants (including rs505922) in ABO, and allelic blood group A ( AO+AA, odds ratio = 1.84, 95%CI = 1.20-2.80) were associated with diffuse-type GC; however, conditional models with other ABO variants indicated that the associations were largely due to allelic blood group A. One variant in FUT5 was also associated with diffuse-type GC, and four variants (and haplotypes) in FUT2 (Se), FUT3 (Le) and FUT6 with intestinal-type GC. Further, one variant in ABO, two in FUT3 and two in FUT6 were associated with H. pylori infection status in controls, and two of these (in FUT3 and FUT6) were weakly associated with intestinal-type GC risk. None of the individual variants surpassed a Bonferroni corrected p-value cutoff of 0.0016; however, after a gene-based permutation test, two loci [ FUT3(Le)/FUT5/FUT6 and FUT2(Se)] were significantly associated with diffuse- and intestinal-type GC, respectively. Replication and functional studies are therefore recommended to clarify the role of ABO and FUT alleles in H. pylori infection and subtype-specific gastric carcinogenesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The experience of using FUT, FUT-B83, and UPFS carbon plastics in plain bearings of power pumps, crude booster pumps, scavenge pumps, reservoir pressure maintenance pumps, and feed pumps of power plants is generalized. Follicular unit extraction (FUE) and follicular unit transplantation (FUT) account for 99% of hair transplant procedures. In both cases, it is important for clinicians to characterize follicle density for treatment planning and evaluation. The existing gold-standard is photographic examination. However, this approach is insensitive to subdermal hair and cannot identify follicle orientation. Here, we introduce a fast and non-invasive imaging technique to measure follicle density and angles across regions of varying density. We first showed that hair is a significant source of photoacoustic signal. We then selected regions of low, medium, and high follicle density and showed that photoacoustic imaging can measure the density of follicles even when they are not visible by eye. We performed handheld imaging by sweeping the transducer across the imaging area to generate 3D images via maximum intensity projection. Background signal from the dermis was removed using a skin tracing method. Measurement of follicle density using photoacoustic imaging was highly correlated with photographic determination (R2 = 0.96).
