Measurements of local density fluctuations are crucial to characterizing the interfacial properties of equilibrium fluids. A specific case that has been well-explored involves the heightened compressibility of water near hydrophobic entities. Commonly, a spatial profile of local fluctuation strength is constructed from the measurements of the mean and variance of solvent particle number fluctuations in a set of contiguous subvolumes of the system adjacent to the solvo-/hydrophobe. An alternative measure proposed by Evans and Stewart [J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 27, 194111 (2015)] defines a local compressibility profile in terms of the chemical potential derivative of the spatial number density profile. Using Grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation, we compare and contrast the efficacy of these two approaches for a Lennard-Jones solvent at spherical and planar solvophobic interfaces and SPC/E water at a hydrophobic spherical solute. Our principal findings are as follows: (i) the local compressibility profile χ(r) of Evans and Stewart is considerably more sensitive to variations in the strength of local density fluctuations than the spatial fluctuation profile F (r) and can resolve much more detailed structure; and (ii) while the local compressibility profile is essentially independent of the choice of spatial discretization used to construct the profile, the spatial fluctuation profile exhibits a strong systematic dependence on the size of the subvolumes on which the profile is defined. Purpose: Improving quality of life (QoL) is a major goal of rehabilitation following spinal cord injury (SCI). However, people with disabilities in resource constrained contexts have limited access to rehabilitation and poorer health outcomes, including QoL. There is a paucity of qualitative research on the experiences of persons with SCI involved in rehabilitation programmes in low-middle income countries. This study aimed to assess participants' perceptions of the benefits of a 24-week SCI rehabilitation programme delivered as part of a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) in South Africa. Materials and methods: Sixteen participants, with chronic motor-incomplete tetraplegia, were enrolled in a two-arm pilot RCT involving robotic locomotor training, a novel technology, and standard activity-based training (Pan African Clinical Trial Registry (PACTR201608001647143)). Data were collected via in-depth interviews and analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Participants described several improvements in QoL, including enhanced functional independence; reduced secondary complications; and improved psychosocial and emotional well-being. Conclusions: The holistic approach to rehabilitation calls for the involvement of individuals' views about what matters to them to inform clinical practice and to highlight the role that physical activity and the perceived successes play in shaping the lived experiences after SCI. Activity-based Training (ABT) represents the current standard of neurological rehabilitation. Robotic Locomotor Training (RLT), an innovative technique, aims to enhance rehabilitation outcomes. This study aimed to conduct a randomized pilot and feasibility trial of a locomotor training program within South Africa. Individuals with chronic traumatic motor incomplete tetraplegia (n = 16). Each intervention involved 60-minute sessions, 3x per week, for 24-weeks. Outcomes included feasibility measures and functional capacity. 17 out of 110 individuals initiated the program (recruitment rate = 15.4%) and 16 completed the program (drop-out rate = 5.8%) and attended sessions (attendance rate = 93.9%). Both groups showed a significant increase in upper extremity motor score (MS) and abdominal strength post intervention. Only the RLT group showed a significant change in lower extremity MS, with a mean increase of 3.00 [0.00; 16.5] points over time. Distance walked in the Functional Ambulatory Inventory (SCI-FAI) increased significantly (p = 0.02) over time only for the RLT group. Feasibility rates of the intervention and functional outcomes justify a subsequent powered RCT comparing RLT to ABT as an effective rehabilitation tool for potentially improving functional strength and walking capacity in people with incomplete SCI. Spinal cord injury causes severe limitations to functional capacity, independence, and quality of life. Robotic Locomotor Training is growing rehabilitation modality for people with spinal cord injury, but currently its effects on functional capacity are limited. In a relatively small sample, this study shows that large, randomized control trials are feasible within a low-income setting. Simulations of water near extended hydrophobic spherical solutes have revealed the presence of a region of depleted density and accompanying enhanced density fluctuations. The physical origin of both phenomena has remained somewhat obscure. We investigate these effects employing a mesoscopic binding potential analysis, classical density functional theory (DFT) calculations for a simple Lennard-Jones solvent, and Grand Canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations of a monatomic water (mw) model. We argue that the density depletion and enhanced fluctuations are near-critical phenomena. Specifically, we show that they can be viewed as remnants of the critical drying surface phase transition that occurs at bulk liquid–vapor coexistence in the macroscopic planar limit, i.e., as the solute radius Rs → ∞. Focusing on the radial density profile ρ(r) and a sensitive spatial measure of fluctuations, the local compressibility profile χ(r), our binding potential analysis provides explicit predictions for the manner in which the key features of ρ(r) and χ(r) scale with Rs, the strength of solute–water attraction ɛsf, and the deviation from liquid–vapor coexistence of the chemical potential, δμ. These scaling predictions are confirmed by our DFT calculations and GCMC simulations. As such, our theory provides a firm basis for understanding the physics of hydrophobic solvation. Planning disputes are sites of contestation in which science-based regulations come into conflict with the place-based knowledge of local communities. The procedural and often technical nature of these regulations means that these controversies are marked by an asymmetry of resources that is often experienced by community groups as an asymmetry in credibility. In short, the expertise of developers is generally accepted as such, whilst the knowledge claimed by citizens is dismissed as 'anecdotal' or 'NIMBYism'. In this article, we make the argument that the asymmetries of expertise are less stark than the current system typically allows and that recognising and accommodating this would improve the planning system by enhancing the representation and inclusion of community voices. We explore this position by using a case study of the construction of a Energy-from-Biomass plant in South Wales. Drawing from 30 qualitative interviews, we maintain that the planning process has the potential to function as one of a network of 'trading zones' in which different communities enact their rights and have their claims to knowledge and expertise recognised. Crucial to this argument is understanding that the levels and kinds of expertise that different parties bring to the interactions are more than just matters of attribution: community groups can have genuine expertise. The article explores the proposal for a Consensus Rule in the legal system, which suggests that judges should evaluate scientific consensus instead of jurors. The authors present their own framework for improving the current system and suggest holding pre-trial hearings to determine consensus. They acknowledge the challenges and uncertainties involved but argue that scientific consensus is a reliable source of knowledge for legal processes. The article discusses the differences between lay jurors and judges in evaluating expert testimony and highlights the limitations of the current system. It also explores the role of consensus in determining the admissibility of expert testimony and proposes guidelines for judges to evaluate the reliability of informants on consensus. The article provides examples of how the Consensus Rule could be applied in different contexts and calls for further research on the advantages of relying on scientific consensus in legal cases. This study explores two unique aspects of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) from the perspective of gender diversity in the field of motion pictures and the dimension of inclusion utilizing the Bechdel-Wallace Test (BWT). A production may pass the BWT if a conversation between two women is not about men, hence the conversation is deemed meaningful. Using a consumer-driven data set, we find a positive effect of the BWT on international and total box office sales. The results also show a unique result in the years following the modern #MeToo movement, leading to enhanced box office returns for domestic, international, and total box office sales. Therefore, in addition to contributing to efforts to better understanding the impact of the addition of gender diversity and inclusion on motion picture performance, female characters' meaningful conversation with other females will likely lead to higher return on producers' investment in motion pictures. We study the monatomic water model of Molinero and Moore the grand canonical ensemble Monte Carlo simulation. Measurements of the probability distribution of the number density obtained via multicanonical sampling and histogram reweighting provide accurate estimates of the temperature dependence of both the liquid–vapor coexistence densities and the surface tension. Using finite-size scaling methods, we locate the liquid–vapor critical point at Tc = 917.6 K, ρc = 0.311 g cm−3. When plotted in scaled variables, in order to test the law of corresponding states, the coexistence curve of monatomic water is close to that of real water. In this respect, it performs better than extended simple point charge (SPC/E), TIP4P, and TIP4P/2005 water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Related‐party transactions (RPTs) and transfer pricing techniques are typically used by multinational enterprises to reduce their tax obligations by shifting the income to zero or to low‐tax countries. These techniques have thrived and have emerged as a significant concern for tax authorities. This study investigates the effect of tax haven utilisation on related‐party sales pricing in a sample of Australian listed firms. We find that tax haven use is positively and significantly associated with related‐party sales pricing. Moreover, we identify a positive and significant interaction between tax havens and earnings management with related‐party sales pricing. Ownership concentration and its interaction effect with tax havens are significant predictors of the increased use of related‐party sales pricing. Overall, the empirical findings demonstrate that earnings management, a high level of ownership concentration and the use of tax havens are substantial factors that enable firms to obtain tax benefits via the use of RPTs. 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural represents a key chemical in the drive towards a sustainable circular economy within the chemical industry. The final step in 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural production is the acid catalysed dehydration of fructose, for which supported organoacids are excellent potential catalyst candidates. Here we report a range of solid acid catalysis based on sulphonic acid grafted onto different porous silica nanosphere architectures, as confirmed by TEM, N2 porosimetry, XPS and ATR‐IR. All four catalysts display enhanced active site normalised activity and productivity, relative to alternative silica supported equivalent systems in the literature, with in‐pore diffusion of both substrate and product key to both performance and humin formation pathway. An increase in‐pore diffusion coefficient of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural within wormlike and stellate structures results in optimal productivity. In contrast, poor diffusion within a raspberry‐like morphology decreases rates of 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural production and increases its consumption within humin formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Replication initiator proteins (Reps) from the HUH endonuclease family process specific single‐stranded DNA sequences to initiate rolling‐circle replication in viruses. Here, the first crystal structure of the apo state of a Rep domain from the smacovirus family is reported. Pyrolysis bio‐oils, one of the products of lignocellulosic biomass pyrolysis, have the potential to be widely used as fuels. The chemical composition of bio‐oils is very complicated as they contain hundreds, if not thousands, of different, mostly oxygen‐containing, compounds with a wide distribution of physical properties, chemical structures, and concentrations. Detailed knowledge of bio‐oil composition is crucial for optimizing both the pyrolysis processes and for any subsequent upgrading into a more viable fuel resource. Here we report the successful use of low‐field, or benchtop, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometers in the analysis of pyrolysis oils. Pyrolysis oils from four different feedstocks were derivatized and analyzed using 19F NMR techniques. The NMR results compare favorably with titrations for total carbonyl content. In addition, the benchtop NMR spectrometer proves able to reveal key spectral features, thus allowing the quantification of different carbonyl groups, such as aldehydes, ketones and quinones. Benchtop NMR spectrometers are typically compact, cheaper than their superconducting counterparts and do not require cryogens. Their use will make NMR analysis of pyrolysis oils easier and more accessible to a wide range of different potential users. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

20 July 1969: approximately 240 000 mi away from Earth, two astronauts named Neil Armstrong and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. landed on the moon. 20 October 2020: approximately 200 million miles away from Earth, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) managed to land a spacecraft on an asteroid named Bennu and collect a sample from its surface. Sometime 2030s: approximately 34 million miles away from Earth, NASA is looking to successfully send humans to Mars. So, why is all this important? The effects of climate change are apparent on Earth today—temperatures around the world higher than normal, a rising sea level, natural disasters increasing in frequency and strength—and these effects continue to become ever more apparent as time goes on; thus, there is a need for solutions, which outer space has become one that is simultaneously grown in seriousness over the years. Colonizing space, traveling to distant planets and inhabiting them, these are definite possibilities for humans, as evidenced above by the remarkable progress NASA has made; however, one of the biggest obstacles NASA is dealing with in bringing those possibilities into fruition is their food system—all the actors and interactions within a food chain, meaning those who grow the food, those who process the food, those who transport the food, those who sell the food and finally, those who consume and dispose of the food. The shelf life of NASA's current food system will not last past 18 months in the unique environment of space, where there are the hazards of galactic cosmic rays, solar radiation and microgravity. Recognizing this—essentially recognizing that achieving such aforementioned feats would require a food system that can last much longer—NASA and others have constantly been researching and experimenting with their food system, ranging from how its food is grown, processed and preserved to the focus of this literature review: how it is packaged. Henceforth, the purpose of this literature review is to chronologically look at and discuss the major materials and technologies used in NASA's space food packaging of the past—the 1960s–1970s—look at and discuss those of the present—the 1980s–2000s—and finally, look ahead and discuss those of the future, entailing materials and technologies currently being worked on or considered for future use in NASA space missions. Topics covered include the role of work-life balance in burnout, the role of burnout in medical errors, and different institutional and organizational factors that play a role in burnout.

The CPED Framework (CPED, 2022) envisions the EdD as a professionally-oriented alternative to the PhD. Within the framework, two professional aims are proposed: stewardship and scholarly practice. In this essay, I distinguish between the two terms, exploring how Erving Goffman’s (1986) concept of frame analysis can be a useful approach to stewardship. I contrast Goffman’s (1986) approach with that of frame alignment (Snow et al., 1986), noting that frames are useful for clarifying the improvement efforts of scholarly practice while also putting those who use them at risk of encapsulation. I explore how the signature pedagogy of the CPED Framework itself is such a frame. I hope this essay will be useful for faculty in CPED-informed programs designing courses to balance the dual development of scholarly practice and stewardship, and that it will be useful for CPED-informed EdD candidates integrating multiple frames into the definition and solution of PoPs. For a standard model of patchy colloidal fluids with patch number M = 2, where chain formation (polymerization) occurs, we show that Wertheim theory predicts critical behavior at vanishing density and temperature. The analysis is based on determining lines in the phase diagram of maximal correlation length and compressibility. Simulation studies identify the latter line and confirm our prediction of Fisher–Widom crossover, i.e., the asymptotic decay of the pair correlation function changes from monotonic to damped oscillatory as the density is increased. For M > 2, it is known that phase separation occurs with a true critical point. Our results support the notion that a "disappearing" critical point occurs in the limit M = 2 and we uncover its remnants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Imitation Game is a new method and, as such, it is important to show that its results are plausible and replicable. We tested this by conducting Imitation Games on religion in a range of European countries, returning approximately 12 months later to repeat the research. The idea was that non-Christian members of strongly Christian countries would find it easy to pass as members of the practicing majority because Christian beliefs and practices would be ubiquitous. In more secular countries, the expectation was that non-Christians would find it harder to pass as Christian because religious practices are less visible. We show that, despite some anomalous results, the data are consistent with expectations derived from survey data and that the claim to have replicated the results can be supported. We also suggest that our experiences show that questions of replication in the social sciences cannot be resolved by statistical meta-analysis alone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aggregation of polycyclic aromatic compound (PAC) molecules is sensitive to the solvent they are dissolved or suspended in. By using both dynamic light scattering and diffusion-ordered nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, in combination with molecular dynamics simulations, the effect of chemical structure on the aggregation of PACs in both aromatic and alkane solvents were systematically investigated. A suite of triphenylene-based PACs offers a robust platform to understand the driving forces of aggregation mechanism across both nanometer and micrometer scales. Both the configuration, either parallel or otherwise, and the arrangement, whether compact or loose, of molecules in their aggregates are determined by a fine balance of different interactions such as those between the polar groups, π–π interactions between the aromatic cores, steric hindrance induced by the side chains, and the degree of solvation. These results suggest that molecular architecture is the major factor in determining how the model compounds aggregate. The shift from aromatic to aliphatic solvent only slightly increases the likelihood of aggregation for the model compounds studied while subtle differences in molecular architecture can have a significant impact on the aggregation characteristics. "Hypernormal science" has minimal potential for contestation on matters of principle and practice so that information exchange can be unproblematic. Sciences comprise hypernormal domains and more contestable "normal" domains where knowledge diffusion, like acquiring linguistic fluency, depends on face-to-face interaction. Hypernormal domains belonging to molecular biology are contrasted with normal domains in gravitational wave detection physics. Sciences as a whole should not be confused with their typical domains. The analysis has immediate implications for proposed transitions out of the Covid-19 lockdown, proposed solutions to the replication crisis, and, perhaps, our understanding of the early development of social studies of science. Environmental planning disputes often combine questions of regulation and legislation with distinctive, place-based epistemic issues that lend themselves to citizen science approaches. Whilst these citizen science activities often concern the enforcement of regulations, here we describe the attempts of a local community group to prevent the start-up of a new biomass incineration plant by showing that it fails to comply with the relevant regulations and/or that the associated legislation has not been applied correctly. Through documentary sources and in-depth interviews, we examine the ways in which the group's work has parallels with aspects of regulatory science. In describing this work, and thinking about how to categorise it, we argue that conceptions of citizen science need to be broadened to include a wider range of activities than the traditional focus on primary data collection. We revisit the competition between attractive and repulsive interparticle forces in simple fluids and how this governs and connects the macroscopic phase behavior and structural properties, as manifested in pair correlation functions. We focus on the asymptotic decay of the total correlation function h(r) which is, in turn, controlled by the form of the pair direct correlation function c(r). The decay of rh(r) to zero can be exponential (monotonic) if attraction dominates repulsion and exponentially damped oscillatory otherwise. The Fisher-Widom (FW) line separates the phase diagram into two regions characterized by the two different types of asymptotic decays. We show that there is a new and physically intuitive thermodynamic criterion which approximates well the actual FW line. This new criterion defines a line where the isothermal compressibility takes its ideal gas value χ T = χ T id . We test our hypothesis by considering four commonly used models for simple fluids. In all cases, the new criterion yields a line in the phase diagram that is close to the actual FW line for the thermodynamic state points that are most relevant. We also investigate (Widom) lines of maximal correlation length, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between the true and Ornstein-Zernike correlation lengths. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding the phase behaviour of mixtures continues to pose challenges, even for systems that might be considered “simple.” Here, we consider a very simple mixture of two colloidal and one non-adsorbing polymer species, which can be simplified even further to a size-asymmetrical binary mixture, in which the effective colloid-colloid interactions depend on the polymer concentration. We show that this basic system exhibits surprisingly rich phase behaviour. In particular, we enquire whether such a system features only a liquid-vapor phase separation (as in one-component colloid-polymer mixtures) or whether, additionally, liquid-liquid demixing of two colloidal phases can occur. Particle-resolved experiments show demixing-like behaviour, but when combined with bespoke Monte Carlo simulations, this proves illusory, and we reveal that only a single liquid-vapor transition occurs. Progressive migration of the small particles to the liquid phase as the polymer concentration increases gives rise to composition inversion—a maximum in the large particle concentration in the liquid phase. This study discussed the reports by participants in a randomised controlled trial of a novel intervention for spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation in Cape Town, South Africa. Sixteen participants were randomised to rehabilitation involving the use of robotic locomotor training, a novel technology, or to a group receiving an activity-based intervention. All participants were interviewed before the intervention and at six months follow-up. In a context in which rehabilitation services for SCI are virtually non-existent, all participants approached the study with enthusiasm and expressed gratitude for participation. They had high hopes for what the programme could achieve, with many believing, perhaps incorrectly, that the programme would help them walk independently again. While hope and enthusiasm are useful for adherence to experimental intervention studies, there is a danger, especially in poorly resourced contexts, for participants to experience considerable disappointment following false hope not being realised. This raises important ethical issues for researchers interested in the potential of new technologies to promote health in poorly resourced contexts. For clinicians, the path between supporting positive emotions (which may lead to positive outcomes), and confronting unrealistic hope (which may lead to negative outcomes) may be difficult. Follow-up with participants after re-integration into their communities is important to determine long-term psychological impact. Pan African Clinical Trial Number: PACTR201608001647143 In low-resource contexts where there is a low level of access to rehabilitation services, such access in the context of a trial of a new intervention may engender hope in a group of people with spinal cord injury. This hope may increase when a new technology is used, as was the case in this study. Hope can be very helpful to people entering rehabilitation, but unrealistic hope and expectations may have negative implications in the longer term. In this study, expectations of participants centred, unrealistically, around regaining the ability to walk again, despite past experiences and medical advice suggesting otherwise. A thin line exists between supporting high expectations and confronting unrealistic hope. This conundrum is difficult for the clinician, as both inappropriate hope and undue pessimism about an intervention have the potential to cause harm. Participant follow-up after the end of any innovative trial is important, not just to monitor physical progress, but also, where necessary, to support participants through a potential period of disillusionment when they find their expectations have not been fully met. Introduction: SHORT syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant condition described by its acronym of short stature, hyperextensibility of joints and/or inguinal hernia, ocular depression, Rieger abnormality, and teething delay. Individuals have a distinct progeroid craniofacial appearance with a triangular face, frontal bossing, hypoplastic or thin alae nasi, large low-set ears, and mandibular retrognathia. Objectives: To systematically appraise the literature and update the clinical phenotype with emphasis on the dental condition. Design: A systematic literature search was carried out to update the clinical phenotype, identifying reports of individuals with SHORT syndrome published after August 2015. The same search strategy but not limited to publication date was carried out to identify reports of the dental phenotype. Two independent reviewers screened 1937 articles with 55 articles identified for full-text review. Results: Nineteen individuals from 11 families were identified. Facial dysmorphism including ocular depression, triangular shaped face, frontal bossing, large low-set ears, and micrognathia were the most consistent features followed by lipodystrophy, insulin resistance, and intrauterine growth restriction. Teething delay, microdontia, hypodontia, and enamel hypoplasia have all been reported. Conclusion: Features that comprise the SHORT acronym do not accurately or completely describe the clinical phenotype. The craniofacial appearance is one of the most consistent features. Lipodystrophy and insulin resistance may also be considered cardinal features. After teething delay, enamel hypoplasia and microdontia are the most common dental manifestations. X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (XLH) is a rare condition affecting bone metabolism. It has characteristic dental features such as poorly mineralised dentine, spontaneous abscess formation in the absence of caries and taurodontism. There are limited published data about patients with this condition undergoing orthodontic treatment, and there is no clear guideline on the suitability of orthodontic treatment in this cohort. Alkali activated binders are a promising alternative to the use of Portland cement in the manufacture of concrete for curbing CO2 emissions. Novel sources of silicates have been investigated in recent years for reducing cost and environmental impacts associated with the use of chemical activators. This study describes the production of solid sodium silicate (SS) activating powder from bamboo leaf ash (BLA). Bamboo leaves were calcined at 550–800°C, mixed with NaOH pellets, and heated in an oven at 300°C. The obtained silicate powder was used for activating blended fly ash/slag samples. Mechanical and microstructural properties of BLA‐based samples were compared to those of samples made with commercially available chemicals. The strength of BLA‐activated mortars matched the commercially‐sourced activators, being 25–30 MPa at 7 days and exceeding 40 MPa at 28 days. The microstructural analysis suggested that BLA‐based SS showed a lesser degree of dissolution of precursors at 7 days, but the quality of the matrix was higher than that of NaOH‐activated samples. These results confirmed that the reactivity of BLA‐silicate powder was similar to that of commercial SS solutions, and show the potential valorization of future biomass renewable waste in the production of low carbon, alkali‐activated concretes. Meningitis caused by infectious pathogens is associated with vessel damage and infarct formation, however the physiological cause is often unknown. Cryptococcus neoformans is a human fungal pathogen and causative agent of cryptococcal meningitis, where vascular events are observed in up to 30% of patients, predominantly in severe infection. Therefore, we aimed to investigate how infection may lead to vessel damage and associated pathogen dissemination using a zebrafish model that permitted noninvasive in vivo imaging. We find that cryptococcal cells become trapped within the vasculature (dependent on their size) and proliferate there resulting in vasodilation. Localised cryptococcal growth, originating from a small number of cryptococcal cells in the vasculature was associated with sites of dissemination and simultaneously with loss of blood vessel integrity. Using a cell-cell junction tension reporter we identified dissemination from intact blood vessels and where vessel rupture occurred. Finally, we manipulated blood vessel tension via cell junctions and found increased tension resulted in increased dissemination. Our data suggest that global vascular vasodilation occurs following infection, resulting in increased vessel tension which subsequently increases dissemination events, representing a positive feedback loop. Thus, we identify a mechanism for blood vessel damage during cryptococcal infection that may represent a cause of vascular damage and cortical infarction during cryptococcal meningitis. Author summary: Meningitis is a life threatening form of infection in the brain that is difficult to treat. How infection spreads from the blood to cause meningitis is not well understood. Here we have shown how infection with the fungus Cryptococcus neoformans can be spread from the blood by blocking and bursting blood vessels. Using zebrafish larvae, we were able to follow the same infections over a period of days to understand how this infection behaves in blood vessels. We found that fungal cells become stuck within blood vessels depending on their size. These cells grow within blood vessels, resulting in the blood vessels becoming wider. We measured increased tension in blood vessels suggesting that, with the bloackage and widening of vessels, there was increased local blood pressure. We found that vessel blockage was associated with their rupture and spreading of fungus into the surround tissue. Finally, by increasing the tension in vessels we could increase the number of blood bursting events supporting our conclusion that blood vessel blockage leads to the spread of the infection outside of blood vessels. Due to its desirable mechanical properties, compacted graphite iron (CGI) has been used to replace conventional gray cast iron (CI) in various applications, such as automotive engine blocks and cylinder heads. However, the poor machinability of CGI can lead to excessive tool wear and consequently high manufacturing costs. Various strategies have been developed to improve the machinability of CGI, including optimizing machining parameters and the development of novel metalworking fluids. In this study, machining of CGI was conducted using cubic boron nitride (cBN) tools under different cutting speeds, with both soluble and full-synthetic water-based metalworking fluids at different levels of sulfur addition and water dilution. The effects of the metalworking fluids on the tool wear behavior were examined. Results showed that at 200 m/min cutting speed, the soluble metalworking fluid at 4% dilution and 0.3% sulfur compound exhibited the best performance, with a cutting distance reaching 23.8 km. In contrast, the least effective soluble metalworking fluid at 9% dilution and 0.3% sulfur compound resulted in a 28.6% decrease in the cutting distance (17.0 km) compared to the best one. At a higher speed (300 m/min), the cutting distance for all metalworking fluids dropped to less than 6.0 km, with the full-synthetic metalworking fluid showing the shortest cutting distance of 4.8 km. This paper presents statistical evidence of roadside vegetation's contribution to pavement roughness progression rates. Detailed statistical and regression analysis of the roadside vegetation data collected via satellite imageries and road roughness data collected via high speed road profiler was performed. Elaborative investigation on interaction between roadside vegetation and waveband roughness progression has provided a clear indication of tree variable's contribution on road deterioration. Statistical parameters such as moderate Pearson correlation coefficient (r) values, low mean squared error (MSE), root mean squared error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE) values, high Willmott's index of agreement (d) were obtained for training and validation datasets, that depicted the potentiality of tree variables as predictors in pavement roughness progression rate modelling. Statistical evidence showed that effect of trees on road deterioration was more noticeable on long wavelength roughness progression rates. This can be justified via prevailing soil moisture interaction in expansive soil deposits subjected to moisture withdrawal of deciduous trees in arid climate conditions. Overall, the findings of this paper exemplify on the necessity of considering the presence of roadside vegetation in road deterioration analysis, and suggesting the scope of improvement for prediction performance. The degeneration and death of motor neurons lead to motor neuron diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Although the exact mechanism by which motor neuron degeneration occurs is not well understood, emerging evidence implicates the involvement of ferroptosis, an iron-dependent oxidative mode of cell death. We reported previously that treating Gpx4NIKO mice with tamoxifen to ablate the ferroptosis regulator glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) in neurons produces a severe paralytic model resembling an accelerated form of ALS that appears to be caused by ferroptotic cell death of spinal motor neurons. In this study, in support of the role of ferroptosis in this model, we found that the paralytic symptoms and spinal motor neuron death of Gpx4NIKO mice were attenuated by a chemical inhibitor of ferroptosis. In addition, we observed that the paralytic symptoms of Gpx4NIKO mice were malleable and could be tapered by lowering the dose of tamoxifen, allowing for the generation of a mild paralytic model without a rapid onset of death. We further used both models to evaluate mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) in the ferroptosis of spinal motor neurons and showed that overexpression of peroxiredoxin 3, a mitochondrial antioxidant defense enzyme, ameliorated symptoms of the mild but not the severe model of the Gpx4NIKO mice. We report a theoretical and simulation study of the drying and wetting phase transitions of a truncated Lennard-Jones fluid at a flat structureless wall. Binding potential calculations predict that the nature of these transitions depends on whether the wall-fluid attraction has a long ranged (LR) power law decay or is instead truncated, rendering it short ranged (SR). Using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation and classical density functional theory, we examine both cases in detail. We find that for the LR case wetting is first order, while drying is continuous (critical) and occurs exactly at zero attractive wall strength, i.e., in the limit of a hardwall. In the SR case, drying is also critical but the order of the wetting transition depends on the truncation range of the wall-fluid potential. We characterize the approach to critical drying and wetting in terms of the density and local compressibility profiles and via the finitesize scaling properties of the probability distribution of the overall density. For the LR case, where the drying point is known exactly, this analysis allows us to estimate the exponent ν║, which controls the parallel correlation length, i.e., the extent of vapor bubbles at the wall. Surprisingly, the value we obtain is over twice that predicted by mean field and renormalization group calculations, despite the fact that our three dimensional system is at the upper critical dimension where mean field theory for critical exponents is expected to hold. In classical density functional theory (DFT), the part of the Helmholtz free energy functional arising from attractive inter-particle interactions is often treated in a mean-field or van der Waals approximation. On the face of it, this is a somewhat crude treatment as the resulting functional generates the simple random phase approximation (RPA) for the bulk fluid pair direct correlation function. We explain why using standard mean-field DFT to describe inhomogeneous fluid structure and thermodynamics is more accurate than one might expect based on this observation. By considering the pair correlation function g(x) and structure factor S(k) of a one-dimensional model fluid, for which exact results are available, we showthat the mean-field DFT, employed within the test-particle procedure, yields results much superior to those from the RPA closure of the bulk Ornstein-Zernike equation. We argue that one should not judge the quality of a DFT based solely on the approximation it generates for the bulk pair direct correlation function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using classical density functional theory (DFT), we calculate the density profile (r) and local compressibility X(r) of a simple liquid solvent in which a pair of blocks with (microscopic) rectangular cross section are immersed. We consider blocks that are solvophobic, solvophilic and also ones that have both solvophobic and solvophilic patches. Large values of X(r) correspond to regions in space where the liquid density is fluctuating most strongly. We seek to elucidate how enhanced density fluctuations correlate with the solvent mediated force between the blocks, as the distance between the blocks and the chemical potential of the liquid reservoir vary. For sufficiently solvophobic blocks, at small block separations and small deviations from bulk gas-liquid coexistence, we observe a strongly attractive (near constant) force, stemming from capillary evaporation to form a low density gas-like intrusion between the blocks. The accompanying X(r) exhibits a structure which reflects the incipient gas-liquid interfaces that develop. We argue that our model system provides a means to understanding the basic physics of solvent mediated interactions between nanostructures, and between objects such as proteins in water that possess hydrophobic and hydrophilic patches. Introduction and hypothesis: Patients with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) often experience chronic pelvic and even systemic pain that can be difficult to clinically manage. Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy, a non-invasive strategy that has shown significant efficacy for pain reduction in other chronic pain conditions, may provide benefit for pain management in patients with IC/BPS. Methods: PEMF delivery to patients occurs via a bio-electromagnetic-energy device which consists of a flexible mat (180 × 50 cm) that the patient lies on for systemic, full-body delivery and/or a flexible pad (50 × 15 cm) for targeted delivery to a specific body region (e.g., pelvic area). The duration of individual sessions, number of sessions per day, total number of sessions, and follow-up observation period vary between previously published studies. Positive outcomes are typically reported as a significant reduction in visual analog scale (VAS) pain score and functional improvement assessed using validated questionnaires specific to the condition under study. Results and conclusions: The use of PEMF has been evaluated as a therapeutic strategy for pain management in several clinical scenarios. Randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trials have reported positive efficacy and safety profiles when PEMF was used to treat non-specific low back pain, patellofemoral pain syndrome, chronic post-operative pain, osteoarthritis-related pain, rheumatoid arthritis-related pain, and fibromyalgia-related pain. Based on these positive outcomes in a variety of pain conditions, clinical trials to evaluate whether PEMF can provide a safe, non-invasive therapeutic approach to improve symptoms of chronic pain and fatigue in patients with IC/BPS are warranted. This article presents a preliminary analysis of the advice provided by the UK government's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) held between 22 January and 23 March 2020 in response to the emerging coronavirus pandemic. Drawing on the published minutes of the group's meetings, the article examines what was known and not known, the assumptions and working practices that shaped their work, and how this knowledge was reflected in the decisions made by the government. In doing so, the article critically examines what it means for policy making to be 'led by the science' when the best available science is provisional and uncertain. Using ideas of 'externality' and 'evidential significance', the article argues that the apparent desire for high levels of certainty by both scientists and political decision-makers made early action impossible as the data needed were not, and could not be, available in time. This leads to an argument for changes to the institutions that provide scientific advice based on sociologically informed expectations of science in which expert judgement plays a more significant role. Current methodologies for microplastic polymer identification such as Fourier‐transform infrared and differential scanning calorimetry are neither cost‐efficient nor practical in fieldwork. Density analysis is an inexpensive and readily transportable alternative method. However, current density analysis methods use many different hazardous solutions to carry out separation and identification of plastics. We demonstrate the use of water, sucrose, and ethanol solutions for the density analysis of microplastics. The method developed was able to successfully distinguish between and identify 8 polymers commonly found in microplastic pollution. Recent research and reform efforts in science education have consistently stressed the importance of coherent science instruction, in which learning opportunities are connected and contextualized by meaningful phenomena, focus on a small set of core ideas over time, and generate a need-to-know about new ideas through a set of connected lessons. Yet, this type of instruction remains uncommon in schools. We argue that science teacher education has the potential to play a powerful role in promoting coherent science instruction in schools, but to reach this potential, science teacher education programs themselves must be coherent. Based on existing literature and our work in an international collaboration focused on effective practices in science teacher education, we identify key features of coherent science teacher education programs and present a new model that we refer to as the Science Teacher Education Programmatic Coherence (STEP-C) model. A binary solvent mixture close to critical demixing experiences fluctuations whose correlation length, ξ, diverges as the critical point is approached. The solvent-mediated (SM) interaction that arises between a pair of colloids immersed in such a near-critical solvent can be long-ranged and this so-called critical Casimir interaction is well-studied. How a (dense) suspension of colloids will self-assemble under these conditions is poorly understood. Using a two-dimensional lattice model for the solvent and hard disks to represent the colloids, we perform extensive Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the phase behaviour of this model colloidal suspension as a function of colloid size and wettability under conditions where the solvent reservoir is supercritical. Unlike most other approaches, where the solvent is modelled as an implicit background, our model employs an explicit solvent and treats the suspension as a ternary mixture. This enables us to capture important features, including the pronounced fractionation of the solvent in the coexisting colloidal phases, of this complex system. We also present results for the partial structure factors; these shed light on the critical behaviour in the ternary mixture.
