The Jordan–Wigner transformation permits one to convert spin 1/2 operators into spinless fermion ones, or vice versa. In some cases, it transforms an interacting spin Hamiltonian into a noninteracting fermionic one, which is exactly solved at the mean-field level. Even when the resulting fermionic Hamiltonian is interacting, its mean-field solution can provide surprisingly accurate energies and correlation functions. Jordan–Wigner is, however, only one possible means of interconverting spin and fermionic degrees of freedom. Here, we apply several such techniques to the XXZ and J1–J2 Heisenberg models, as well as to the pairing or reduced Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer Hamiltonian, with the aim of discovering which of these mappings is most useful in applying fermionic mean-field theory to the study of spin Hamiltonians. Objectives: To investigate sexual practices and HIV risk perception among MSM, identifying associated risk factors and determinants. Methods: A cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted with 144 MSM in Teresina, Piauí, Brazil, using the snowball sampling technique. Participants were recruited via snowball sampling and underwent rapid HIV testing, in addition to completing questionnaires on sexual practices, risk perception, and illicit drug use. Results: The majority of participants showed an unsatisfactory perception of HIV risk. Factors associated with this perception include non-penetrative sex as an HIV preventive measure, which increased the chances of having an unsatisfactory risk perception by 1.45 times (P =.04), engaging with known HIV-positive individuals without knowledge of their viral load (ORa = 2.70; P =.043), and using illicit drugs before/during sex (ORa = 0.29; P =.048). Conclusions: The results indicate a high prevalence of risky sexual practices and an unsatisfactory HIV risk perception among the MSM studied. MSM are significantly more likely to contract HIV compared to the general population, with various factors influencing their risk. Despite this high vulnerability, many MSM do not perceive themselves to be at significant risk of HIV infection. Researchers surveyed 144 MSM to understand their sexual behaviors and how they perceive the risk of HIV. The study found that many MSM engage in risky sexual practices, such as not using condoms during oral sex, even though most use them during anal sex. Additionally, the study revealed that MSM often has a false sense of security when having sex with steady partners compared to casual partners. Key factors associated with a poor perception of HIV risk included low family income, engaging in non-penetrative sex as a preventive measure, having sexual relations with known HIV-positive individuals without knowing their viral load, and using illicit drugs during sexual activity. For instance, using illicit drugs, known as "chemsex," significantly increases risky behaviors, leading to a higher chance of HIV transmission. The study emphasizes the need for targeted health education and interventions for MSM. It suggests promoting regular condom use, better understanding of HIV transmission risks, and discouraging the use of drugs that impair judgment during sexual activities. Effective public health initiatives should be culturally sensitive and accessible to MSM of all income levels. In this article, the implementation of a web system was carried out to improve the process of technical supervision of incidents of a hydrocarbon regulatory company because time was lost in carrying out each process; this research was developed using the SCRUM methodology as it is an agile methodology and adapted to our research. Using the process, events and artifact, it was possible to design the prototypes of the system, architecture, and database. Finally, the implementation was carried out among other important points obtained as results; the average level of optimization of the incident assignment process, derived from the observations, is 91.05% efficiency in assigning incidents to specialists. Regarding the 95% confidence interval for this indicator, it is between 88.98% and 93.11% efficiency, representing two standard deviations with respect to the mean. Regarding the average response time to incidents in all states, obtained from observations, it is 15 days. The 95% confidence interval for this indicator ranges between 14 and 18 days, which represents two standard deviations from the mean. The system is intuitive and not complex. In Brazil, health policies implemented over the last three decades have enabled rapid testing for HIV to be made available in primary health care services. However, although these policies are national, the implementation of actions is not uniform, as they depend on the local management of local health systems. In this context, the study identified the proportion of women from sexual minorities who had never tested for HIV and the factors associated with access, in a Metropolitan Region of the Brazilian Amazon. This was an observational, cross-sectional study, conducted from data collected from July 21, 2022 to April 11, 2024, in the Brazilian Amazon. The study included women, aged 18 or over living in the study area who self-declare and self-identify as lesbian, bisexual, pansexual or asexual. The dependent variable: participants were asked if they had ever been tested for HIV in their lifetime. The independent variables were the access components: predisposing, facilitating and necessary. 301 women from sexual minorities participated in the study, 42.2% of whom had never tested for HIV. In the final model, multiple backward logistic regression was performed, the highest chances of never having been tested for HIV were participants aged 18 to 30 years (OR 2.99; p = 0.038); with income less than or equal to 1 minimum wage (OR 1.91; p = 0.026); participants who did not have children (OR 6.67; p = 0.012); and those who did not have an active sexual life (OR 4.73; p = 0.006). While the lowest chances of never having tested for HIV were among participants who used drugs OR 0.44; p = 0.008) and women who had already had an STI (OR 0.20; p = 0.044). In Alzheimer's disease (AD), amyloid-β (Aβ) triggers the aggregation and spreading of tau pathology, which drives neurodegeneration and cognitive decline. However, the pathophysiological link between Aβ and tau remains unclear, which hinders therapeutic efforts to attenuate Aβ-related tau accumulation. Aβ has been found to trigger neuronal hyperactivity and hyperconnectivity, and preclinical research has shown that tau spreads across connected neurons in an activity-dependent manner. Here, we hypothesized that neuronal hyperactivity and hypersynchronicity, resulting in functional connectivity increases, constitute a crucial mechanism by which Aβ facilitates the spreading of tau pathology. By combining Aβ positron emission tomography (PET), resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, and longitudinal tau-PET in 69 cognitively normal amyloid-negative controls and 140 amyloid-positive patients covering the AD spectrum, we confirmed that Aβ induces hyperconnectivity of temporal lobe tau epicenters to posterior brain regions that are vulnerable to tau accumulation in AD. This was replicated in an independent sample of 55 controls and 345 individuals with preclinical AD and low cortical tau-PET uptake, suggesting that the emergence of Aβ-related hyperconnectivity precedes neocortical tau spreading. Last, using longitudinal tau-PET and mediation analysis, we confirmed that these Aβ-related connectivity increases in tau epicenters to typical tau-vulnerable brain regions in AD mediated the effect of Aβ on faster tau accumulation, unveiling increased connectivity as a potential causal link between the two AD hallmark pathologies. Together, these findings suggest that Aβ promotes tau spreading by eliciting neuronal hyperconnectivity and that targeting Aβ-related neuronal hyperconnectivity may attenuate tau spreading in AD. Background: multilocular thymic cysts are uncommon acquired cysts in the anterior mediastinum caused by incomplete thymic involution. They may be associated with autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic sclerosis. Methods: a 61-year-old man with a history of rheumatoid arthritis for 8 years was referred to our unit because of a multiloculated mass in the anterior mediastinum with a high F18 fluorodeoxyglucose uptake at PET-CT scan. Histology showed a multilocular thymic cyst with lymphoid tissue, organized in germinal centers and internodal areas. Results: rheumatoid arthritis-related symptoms progressively disappeared after the excision of the mass. Objectives: To evaluate the effects of subthreshold micropulse laser treatment (SMLT) on choroidal architecture in chronic central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) and their correlations with functional outcomes. Methods: This retrospective study included 48 eyes with chronic CSC that were treated with 577 nm SMLT. The choroidal thickness (CT); Sattler's layer and choriocapillaris complex thickness (SLCCT); Haller's layer thickness (HLT); subretinal fluid (SRF); and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) were assessed at baseline and at 2 months post treatment. Results: At 2 months, the SLCCT increased from 185.92 ± 80.89 μm to 214.17 ± 83.36 μm (p = 0.023), and the total CT increased from 444.46 ± 80.43 μm to 484.33 ± 93.19 μm (p = 0.002). The SRF height decreased from 140.38 ± 95.89 μm to 57.58 ± 63.54 μm (p < 0.001), with complete resolution in 79.2% of cases. The BCVA improved from 0.41 ± 0.48 to 0.22 ± 0.30 logMAR (p < 0.001). Changes in the SLCCT correlated negatively with BCVA changes (r = −0.48, p = 0.025) and positively with total CT changes (r = 0.687, p < 0.001). Conclusions: SMLT induces significant choroidal remodeling in chronic CSC, particularly affecting the Sattler–Bruch layer complex. In the year 2019, a highly virulent coronavirus named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) emerged, precipitating the outbreak of the illness known as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The commonly employed reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) methodology serves to estimate the viral load in each patient's sample by employing a standard curve. However, it is imperative to recognize that this technique exhibits limitations with respect to clinical diagnosis and therapeutic applications, since an advancement of the conventional polymerase chain reaction methods, digital polymerase chain reaction (digital PCR or DDPCR), enables the direct quantification and clonal amplification of nucleic acid strands. The primary divergence between dPCR and traditional PCR resides in their approaches to measuring nucleic acid quantities. In this study, we investigated the viral loads of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) within 461 participants. By employing both RT-qPCR and DDPCR techniques, we established a comparison between the quantification methodologies of the two approaches. Our findings illustrate that the quantification through DDPCR affords a superior means of monitoring viral load within lower respiratory tract samples, thus enhancing the assessment of disease progression, particularly in scenarios characterized by low viral loads. Individual movements of bats are triggered by their life requirements, limited by their recognition of the environment and risks of moving, and mediated by habitat selection. Mining adds fragmentation and heterogeneity to landscapes, with poorly understood consequences to the life activities of the bats. Cave dwelling bats spend most of their life cycles within caves, and as they constantly forage in external landscapes, their contribution in the input of organic matter to the caves is of paramount importance to the subterranean biodiversity. We investigated habitat selection by cave bats in a mosaic of Amazonian forests, iron-rich savannas and iron-caves, studying the movements of the aerial insect-catcher Furipterus horrens (Furipteridae) and of the foliage gleaning bat Lonchorhina aurita (Phyllostomidae), both cave-dependent in the area. We used radio telemetry to assess their use of habitats, under the prediction that these species prefer preserved habitats for their foraging bouts, avoiding human-modified habitats. We also anticipated larger areas and commuting distances for both species when foraging in disturbed landscapes. Thirty-one bats were monitored in conserved habitats, mining sites and pastures resulting in an average range of 415.1 ± 837.4 ha and average commuting distances of 2163 ± 2453 m (F. horrens) and 681.1 ± 1101 ha and 2781.5 ± 2333 m (L. aurita). Our results suggest that F. horrens are open space foragers, frequently recorded in cangas, and L. aurita are forest foragers that use all habitats proportionally to their availability in the landscape. We detected landscape-related effects mediated by seasonal variation in the maximum commuting distance performed by both species. These are the first radiotelemetry data available for F. horrens and L. aurita, delivering original baselines to understand their movement behaviors. This information sheds light into constraints related to the optimal and adjusted biological cycles of these two species and their range shifts under scenarios of disturbance and may subsidize programs for their conservation. The Bi2Se3–In2Se3 layered system has garnered significant attention and extensive research due to its versatile properties, yet its structural properties and phase stability remain elusive. Here, using first-principles calculations with van der Waals interactions, we systematically study the phase stability and transition behavior of (BixIn1−x)2Se3 alloys. Our results reveal a contrasting stability profile between Bi2Se3 and In2Se3, with the former exhibiting a distinct preference for the β phase over the α phase, while the latter shows similar stabilities in both phases, thus partially addressing previously reported ground-state inconsistencies. Exploring composition–structure relationships, we demonstrate that Bi incorporation in low concentrations stabilizes the β phase, consistent with early experimental observations. Further analysis based on the cation orbital properties indicates that the preference of Bi for octahedral sites over tetrahedral ones drives the small critical composition for the α→β phase transition. This work enhances our understanding of phase stability in (BixIn1−x)2Se3 alloys, providing insights for future design of monophasic materials and advanced applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are emerging contaminants (ECs), whose presence in the environment is of increasing concern due to their widespread use and possible detrimental effects on wildlife and humans. These chemicals may present multiple hazardous properties such as environmental persistence, toxicity, high mobility, and the potential for bioaccumulation. In this study, extended bibliographic research was conducted to characterize the removal efficiency (RE) of PPCPs in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) considering different technologies. Measured values of RE were collected from the literature or calculated for 251 compounds. The molecular structure of the 245 PPCPs were used as the input to generate predictions of multiple properties using several QSAR tools, such as the OECD Toolbox, OPERA, EPI Suite™, and QSAR-ME Profiler. These predictions were compared to regulatory thresholds to identify hazardous chemicals and to screen persistent, mobile and toxic (PMT) or persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) substances. Finally, chemicals were prioritized by combining values of RE and QSAR predictions for multiple properties. A total of 16 out of the 245 molecules were prioritized as the most hazardous compounds to the aquatic environment and, among these, six were associated with potential risk due to their exposure concentrations reported in the literature. Background/Objectives: Internalizing disorders, including depression and anxiety, are major contributors to the global burden of disease. While the genetic architecture of these disorders in adults has been extensively studied, their early-life genetic mechanisms remain underexplored, especially in non-European populations. This study investigated the genetic mechanisms underlying internalizing symptoms in a cohort of Latin American children. Methods: This study included 1244 Brazilian children whose legal guardians completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) questionnaire. Genotyping was performed using the Illumina HumanOmni 2.5-8v1 BeadChip. Results: The genome-wide association analysis revealed a significant association of rs7196970 (p = 4.5 × 10−8, OR = 0.61), in the ABCC1 gene, with internalizing symptoms. Functional annotation highlighted variants in epigenetically active regulatory regions, with multiple variants linked to differential expression of ABCC1 across several human tissues. Pathway enrichment analysis identified 42 significant pathways, with notable involvement in neurobiological processes such as glutamatergic, GABAergic, and dopaminergic synapses. Conclusions: This study identifies ABCC1 variants as novel genetic factors potentially associated with early-life internalizing symptoms. Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor associated primarily with asbestos exposure, characterized by an aggressive nature and poor prognosis. Accurate diagnosis, staging, and monitoring of therapeutic response are crucial for effective patient management. Along with a computed tomography (CT) scan, fluorodeoxyglucose labeled with fluorine-18 ([18F]FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) is commonly used in mesothelioma evaluation. However, it has some limitations, including lower sensitivity after pleurodesis and poor accuracy for involved lymph node evaluation. Thus, there is the need to explore other agents. The aim of the present review is to analyze the current literature on the use of alternative radiopharmaceuticals for PET imaging in patients with mesothelioma. A comprehensive search of scientific databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) for studies published in the last decade was performed by using the following keywords: "mesothelioma" AND "PET" AND "PET/CT" "radiopharmaceuticals", "[18F]FDG alternatives". Articles focused solely on [18F]FDG, non-English publications or preclinical studies, reviews, meeting abstracts, letters to the editors, and editorials were excluded. A qualitative assessment was made by using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) checklist for diagnostic test studies, when applicable. In total, 14 papers were selected; in seven articles more than five patients were enrolled, while the other seven were only clinical cases (enrolling up to two subjects). [18F]/gallium-68 ([68Ga])-labeled fibroblast activation protein inhibitor (FAPI) compounds, [18F]Fluorothymidine ([18F]FLT), methionine labeled with carbon-11 ([11C]MET), and fluoromisonidazole labeled with fluorine-18 ([18F]FMISO) PET/CT were the alternative agents used most often. In 12 articles, [18F]FDG PET/CT was used as a comparator imaging modality. Detection rate of [18F]FDG was similar to the other radiopharmaceuticals ([68Ga]/[18F]-labeled FAPI compounds, [18F]FLT, [18F]FMISO, [11C]MET, and [68Ga]-Pentaxifor), although radiolabeled FAPI seems to exhibit a higher diagnostic performance. [18F]FDG is still a valuable agent in patients with mesothelioma. However, radiolabeled FAPI appears to be promising and its theranostic properties should therefore be further assessed. As the world's population continues to grow, the demand for food fish and animal protein is increasing proportionally, leading to the depletion of fish stocks in both marine and freshwater environments. In this pressing scenario, aquaculture emerges as one solution, offering sustainable production methods and employing biotechnological approaches to conserve genetic resources while satisfying the increasing demand for animal protein. In this study, we employ an innovative approach, namely, geometric morphometrics, to discern and delineate the distinctive features of diploid, gynogenetic, and triploid Astyanax altiparanae fish. Our findings reveal morphological differences, particularly in body modifications, across these genetic variants. Applying discriminant analysis, principal components (PC) analysis (PC1 = 32.11%, PC2 = 12.83%, PC3 = 11.56%), and canonical variates (CV) analysis (CV1 = 52.59%, CV2 = 32.53%), we were able to successfully identify and differentiate diploid, triploid, and gynogenetic A. altiparanae individuals. These groups are characterized by their early growth rates during the initial months of development, as well as by sexual dimorphism between groups (F = 20.06, p < 0.0001). Such insights have significant practical implications, not only for advancing biotechnology and animal husbandry techniques but also for optimizing aquaculture practices specific to A. altiparanae. By enhancing our understanding of phenotypic patterns, this study paves the way for maximizing production and unlocking the potential of this Neotropical characid species in aquaculture and biotechnology. Characterized by a composition that highlights extensive geochemical differentiation processes, basaltic asteroids are considered fragments of differentiated bodies. To study the smallest bodies in this population, an important tool is the photometric phase curve that can exhibit different behaviours according to the surface properties of the body. We present here the phase curves obtained for 10 V-type asteroids, nine belonging to the main belt population and one a near-Earth object, with observations acquired at the Observatório Astronômico do Sertão de Itaparica (Brazil). Different behaviours of the phase curves were found, as already obtained by studies of polarimetric curves. Adding to our results in the phase curves of 20 V-types from the literature, we found behaviours not expected for objects of moderate to high albedo in the opposition effect region. We attribute this result to the way regoliths are distributed on the surface of small asteroids, which are different from those of larger objects, although the surface composition is the same. Purpose: This study aims to propose a longitudinal analysis of motivations for Integrated Reporting (IR) adoption, internal changes, the benefits of IR implementation and compliance challenges. Design/methodology/approach: The authors analyse a longitudinal case study of an Italian-listed company (Eni) participating in the IR-Pilot Programme (PP) and covering 10 years of IR adoption. The analysis was based on a mixed-method approach that included semi-structured interviews, content analysis of annual reports and triangulation with other data sources. Results are discussed regarding institutional theory, legitimacy theory and diffusion of innovation theory. Findings: The study suggests that motivations for adopting IR change over time and participation in the IR-PP helps Eni acquire a comprehensive and substantial integrated view of value creation over time, makes integrated culture a key factor for strategic business sustainability and confirms the readiness of early adopters to comply with the non-financial Directive (NFD). Originality/value: This study, among the few longitudinal case studies, provides organisations, regulators and academics with insights into the motivations driving the successful adoption and implementation of IR and the NFD. Trees contribute to socio-economic and environmental needs of rural families in agroecosystems, being part of local culture. We have studied their presence, roles and services, and their importance in food systems inside agrarian reform settlements, performing visits and semi-structured interviews in 16 allotments. A multivariate analysis was performed to demonstrate correlations among species, trees arrangements, and the provision of ecosystem services. We found 92 tree species, most used as food source and for income generation, but also for other specific purposes. Their presence is a settler´s decision, and the values attributed to them are associated with affective and spiritual values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: We used an implementation science framework to investigate perceived health inequities in preventive health care initiatives in rural communities in the Philippines. We also identified health equity–focused quality improvement strategies. Methods: Three health care providers and 12 barangay clinic patients were interviewed. Results: Patient interviews showed that social determinants of health, respect, and attitudes toward health care providers affected patient empowerment to engage in self-management for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). Health care providers identified six challenges in managing NCDs: (a) inefficient work processes; (b) staffing shortages; (c) insufficient access to low-cost medications; (d) inadequate primary preventive health education from the schools; (e) health care not considered a priority; and (f) lack of local government support. Discussion: Inadequate preventive health care and education intensify health access and resource inequities in rural communities in the Philippines. There are no dramatically effective pharmacological treatments for most patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a complex disease with multiple underlying mechanisms, such as neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, microbiome alteration, and antiretroviral activity. We sifted through 15 years of reviews by a group called ALSUntangled to identify 8 alternative and off‐label treatments that target ≥1 of these mechanisms, and have ≥1 human trial suggesting meaningful benefits. Given the overlapping pathological mechanisms of the highlighted products, we suggest that combinations of these treatments targeting diverse mechanisms might be worthwhile for future amyotrophic lateral sclerosis therapy development. This paper introduces two new goodness-of-fit tests for the geometric distribution based on discrete adaptations of the Watson W2 and Anderson-Darling A2 statistics, where the probability of success is unknown. Although these tests are widely applied to continuous distributions, their application in discrete models has been relatively unexplored. Our study addresses this need by developing a robust statistical framework specifically for discrete distributions, particularly the geometric distribution. We provide extensive tables of asymptotic critical values for these tests and demonstrate their practical relevance through a financial case study. Specifically, we apply these tests to analyze price runs derived from daily time series of NASDAQ, DJIA, Nikkei 225, and the Mexican IPC indices, covering the period from January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2022. This work broadens the range of available tools for assessing goodness-of-fit in discrete models, which are essential for applications in finance and beyond. The Northern Antarctic Peninsula (NAP) and the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) are likely to respond rapidly to climate changes by increasing the collapse of peripheral ice shelves and the number of days above 0 °C. These facts make this region a representative hotspot of the global sea level rise and the location of one of the global climate tipping points (thresholds in the Earth system whose changes may become irreversible, if exceeded). Understanding the climate evolution of the NAP, based on past evidences, may help infer its future scenario. Herein, from a comprehensive survey of lacustrine sedimentation in proglacial and periglacial lakes/ponds, we investigated the impact of climate changes on the terrestrial environment in two complementary time scales (Late Holocene and contemporary age). For the longer time scale, regional climate database and biogeochemical properties of Lake Long/NAP sediment core, suggest warming between 4.0 and 2.0 kyr BP following a cooling phase towards the present, that endorse previously suggested Late Holocene Neoglacial (LHN). We attribute the LHN phase to a combined action of long-term decline in total solar irradiance, the Andean volcanism and the El Niño Southern Oscillation. For decades, fossil fuels have accounted for 70% to 80% of global primary energy demand. Far from ending this trend, O&G companies continue to be the main fore-runners in providing secure, versatile and widespread energy to the entire world. The relevance of this sector in the economic-financial landscape and the concern for its stability, makes that the high interest of the scientific community to explore the factors that explain the O&G cross-sectional expected returns remains intact. Through a new approach from the Random Matrix Theory, the aim is to know how many are the factors that explain the market performance of the O&G subsectors (upstream, midstream & downstream), and also if the Brent price can be considered an explanatory factor. We will show that for certain periods, Brent becomes the only factor explaining the movements in the upstream and midstream subsectors, while for most of the time the only factor is the market. Other interesting finding is that no significant factors are found for the downstream subsector, except in certain periods. With a purely statistical approach, we show the factors that explain the cross-sectional expected return of the O&G companies, providing information of special relevance for the decision making of investors, executives and politicians. The Amazon basin is the world's largest hydrographic basin, in terms of both its total area and its species diversity, with more than 2,700 species of fish. Despite this diversity, the data available on the fish fauna of the Amazon basin are still relatively scant and incomplete, in particular from the streams and floodplain lakes of the lower Amazon, which may contain a large proportion of the still undescribed species of the basin. Many of these species are expected to be of interest to the ornamental fish market. The investigation of the diversity of potential ornamental fish using molecular tools is even more limited. Given this scenario, the present study employed DNA barcoding to investigate the diversity of ornamental fish found in two streams and a floodplain lake of the lower Amazon. The mitochondrially encoded cytochrome c oxidase I (MT-CO1) molecular marker was used to identify the taxa, in combination with morphological keys. A total of 51 ornamental species were identified, representing 13 families and three orders. A majority of the species were found at only one of the sampling points, which indicates that the distribution of the species is influenced by ecological factors. The most speciose order was the Characiformes, followed by the Cichliformes and Siluriformes, while the family with the greatest diversity of species was the Acestrorhamphidae (31.3% of the total number of species), followed by the Cichlidae (27.4%), and the Lebiasinidae (9.8%). One specie was registered in the region of the lower Amazon for the first time, and evidence was found of the possible existence of species not formally described of Aphyocharax, Astyanax, Apareiodon and Hemigrammus. The increased burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is fueled by lifestyle factors including diet. This cross-sectional study explored among Tanzanian adults whether unhealthy dietary patterns are associated with intestinal and systemic inflammation which could increase the risk of NCDs. The study included 574 participants, with both diet and inflammatory markers data. Dietary patterns were derived using principal component analysis and reduced rank regression, revealing three main patterns: vegetable-rich, vegetable-poor, and carbohydrate-dense diets. Fecal myeloperoxidase (MPO) and neopterin (NEO) were markers of intestinal inflammation whereas plasma lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were assessed as markers of systemic inflammation. Ordinal logistic regression was used to assess associations between terciles of dietary patterns and quintiles of the inflammatory markers adjusting for potential confounders. High adherence to a vegetable-poor dietary pattern was associated with elevated MPO (adjusted OR, 1.7 95% CI 1.1, 2.8). NEO tended to be higher in people with high adherence to both vegetable-poor pattern (adjusted OR, 2.6 95% CI 1.0, 6.4) and vegetable-rich pattern (adjusted OR, 2.7, 95% CI 1.1, 6.5). No associations were found between dietary patterns and systemic inflammation markers (LBP and CRP). We found links between dietary vegetable intake and intestinal inflammation but not systemic inflammation. However, the cross-sectional nature of the study limits establishing causality and the sample size for some variables may have been inadequate, emphasizing the need for further studies to understand how dietary habits influence inflammation in this population. Neuromuscular disorders (NMD) with neonatal or early infantile onset are usually severe and differ in symptoms, complications, and treatment options. The establishment of a diagnosis relies on the combination of clinical examination, morphological analyses of muscle biopsies, and genetic investigations. Here, we re-evaluated and classified a unique collection of 535 muscle biopsies from NMD infants aged 0–6 months examined over a period of 52 years. We aimed to assess the importance and contribution of morphological muscle biopsy analyses for the establishment of a precise and accurate molecular diagnosis. Altogether, 82% of the biopsies showed typical structural myofiber anomalies highly suggestive of specific NMD classes (congenital myopathies, metabolic myopathies, lower motor neuron (LMN) and neuromuscular junction (NMJ) disorders, muscular dystrophies, inflammatory myopathies), while the remaining 18% showed no or only non-specific histological abnormalities. The diagnostic success rate differed among the NMD classes and was particularly high for congenital myopathies as illustrated by the identification of causative genes in 61% of cases. This is essentially due to the presence of characteristic histopathological hallmarks on biopsies visible by light or electron microscopy often pointing to specific genes. In contrast, metabolic myopathies commonly displayed non-specific features on muscle sections, led to the identification of causative genes in only 19% of the patients, and typically required additional enzymatic tests to establish a more precise diagnosis. The evolution of sequencing technologies fundamentally improved molecular diagnosis and also shifted the relevance of muscle biopsies within the diagnostic process. Depending on the clinical presentation of the patients, direct gene or panel sequencing may be the preferred method nowadays. However, histological and ultrastructural examinations of muscle sections are still frequently useful and can constitute an elemental step in the diagnostic process—either by directing purposeful gene sequencing or pointing to genes and pathogenic variants identified by next-generation sequencing (NGS), or by complementing clinical findings and biochemical analysis methods. Simple Summary: Heat stress in tropical regions significantly affects the production and quality of eggs in laying quails, which is worsened by phytate's antinutritional effects on calcium and phosphorus absorption. Phytase, an exogenous enzyme, can counteract these effects by breaking down phytate and improving mineral availability. This enzyme's use in Japanese quails optimizes calcium absorption and enhances their performance under heat stress. Phytase not only improves productivity but also protects the digestive and reproductive systems, promoting bird welfare and sustainability in poultry production. In tropical and subtropical climate regions, heat stress is one of the main causes of production losses in laying quails, aggravated by the antinutritional effects of the phytate in diet ingredients, which negatively affect the bioavailability of minerals, especially calcium and phosphorus. This situation results in a reduction in production and the quality of eggs from commercial laying quails. Several nutritional strategies are utilized to reduce the adverse effects of high temperatures and antinutritional factors such as phytate. Among these strategies, the use of exogenous enzymes, such as phytase, stands out as a viable alternative. Phytase breaks down phytate molecules, optimizing the absorption of essential minerals and improving productive performance and egg quality under unfavorable conditions. Specifically, it is recommended to use 1500 FTU of phytase, as it not only reduces the effects of thermal stress but also enhances eggshell thickness and calcium absorption. In this context, this bibliographic review sought to produce a document demonstrating the beneficial effects of the phytase enzyme on the hydrolysis of the phytate molecule, the availability of calcium for Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica), and its implications in thermal stress due to heat. With ca. 60 species, Mollinedia is the second most diverse genus of Monimiaceae and the richest genus of the family in the Neotropics. In Brazil, the Atlantic Forest is the richest biome for Mollinedia, with 34 species, most of which are endemic to this biome. Objectives. The aim of the present study was to assess the performance of radiolabeled-PSMA PET/CT in a cohort of intermediate-risk prostate cancer (PCa) patients for initial staging. Methods. This is a retrospective, multicenter analysis of patients diagnosed with intermediate-risk PCa who were staged using radiolabeled PSMA PET/CT to evaluate the extent of the disease before initiating appropriate treatment. The study included patients from the Nuclear Medicine Units of the Humanitas group between 2021 and 2024. The change in management due to the PSMA PET/CT examination was assessed. Results. A total of 181 patients were enrolled across all three centers. Histopathological assessment from biopsy revealed that 51.4% of patients had favorable PCa, while 48.6% had unfavorable disease. PET/CT was positive for the primary lesions in all patients, but it revealed a positivity rate in 23 (12.7%) patients for nodes and distant organs, with a positivity rate of 0.21 in the unfavorable group and 0.05 in the favorable group (p < 0.005). Based on follow-up data, diagnostic accuracy was higher than 90% in both the favorable and unfavorable groups for lymph node and distant metastases. The inclusion of PSMA PET/CT in the diagnostic algorithm for patients with intermediate-risk PCa impacted patient management in 24 (13.3%) cases, based on the multidisciplinary team decision. Conclusions. PSMA PET/CT can affect the management of patients with intermediate-risk PCa in up to 13% of cases, mainly for unfavorable diseases. New imaging techniques as a first-line imaging procedure can help to plan the correct therapeutic approach in the intermediate-risk PCa group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Bruxism is a behaviour that has several consequences in an individual's life, especially when it starts in childhood. However, bruxism can be a potential protective factor, which is an attribute that reduces the chance of a negative health outcome. Objectives: To evaluate the incidence of sleep bruxism (SB) and dental wear in children and adolescents. Materials and Methods: This longitudinal study began in 2014 and 2016 (baseline) with initial 1816 children followed for 5 and 3 years, respectively. The follow‐up data collection started in 2019. The diagnosis of SB was parents report (baseline) and self‐report (follow‐up) due to age groups of each phase, and questions related to symptoms of SB were collected. Five calibrated examiners (kappa >0.7) collected the clinical data. The clinical variables were dental erosion and dental wear. Contextual, individual, behaviour and clinical characteristics were collected. A multilevel logistic regression model was used to investigate the association of contextual, individual, behaviour and clinical characteristics with SB. Poisson regression for repeated measures was performed to evaluate the incidence of SB and dental wear (incidence rate ratio—IRR and confidence interval—95% CI). Results: Two hundred and fifty‐three children and adolescents answered questionnaires and were clinically examined. The mean age of the follow‐up in 2019 was 11.25 years old (±2.19). There was no increase in the incidence of SB (95% CI: 0.74–1.35). Children/adolescents had a 2.2 higher risk to present dental wear (95% CI: 1.89–2.60). SB at the follow‐up was associated with the contextual variable, earache, erosion and awake bruxism. Buffalo breeding in Italy is becoming increasingly economically attractive, with milk production in the Lazio region growing by 15% since 2004. However, the optimal physical characteristics of total mixed rations (TMR) have not been thoroughly investigated. This lack of research suggests the need for greater attention to the physical characteristics of diet, which, combined with its chemical properties, may negatively impact milk yield (MY) and milk quality (MQ), as seen in dairy cows. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the effect of diet composition, with a particular focus on the physical component, on MY and MQ, and apparent digestibility (AD) of dairy buffaloes. The study was conducted on 10 dairy buffalo farms in Amaseno valley (Italy). Monthly samples of TMR, faeces, and bulk milk were collected over a 12-month period, alongside interviews with farmers to gather information on MY and diet composition. The results revealed a high variability in the physical-chemical composition of diets across farms, attributable to differences in feeding management practices. Both chemical and physical component were found to be associated with MY, MQ and AD changes. A ration poor in roughage and rich in concentrate negatively affected MQ showing lower milk fat, and higher somatic cells count and milk urea, while a greater presence of coarse particles and high fibre were associated with lower MY. Nevertheless, coarse particles and aNDF were positively associated with milk clotting parameters and aNDF digestibility. Our study emphasised the high importance of fibre for improving MQ of dairy buffaloes. HIGHLIGHTS: Particle size distribution of dairy buffalo diet is affected by raw material and feeding management. Over recent decades, there was a substantial evolution in the productive management of dairy animals worldwide with a consequent boost in individual milk yield. This evolution positioned the milk production as the central metabolic priority around which all other physiological functions are coordinated and partially minimised. This shift underscores the crucial role of effectively managing stressful phases in intensive dairy farming systems, also highlighting the resilience exhibited by the animals. Indeed, monitoring the nutritional and health status becomes paramount, aiming for an early detection of (sub)clinical health impairments. Given the mammary gland's centrality in high-yielding dairy breeds, it's unsurprising that the milk matrix provides insights about udder itself but also systemic metabolic function. The emerging field of milk phenomics explores links between milk components and animal health, holding great promise for studying dairy cow resilience. The use of infrared spectroscopy on milk to predict indicators and complex traits at the herd level is a promising approach. In the dairy sector, the available infrared instruments mainly implement the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. This method is widely employed in milk recording schemes worldwide for animal monitoring and breeding purposes. In addition, visible and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy is increasingly integrated into milking systems for daily on-farm monitoring of milk quality and animals' physiological status. This review examines the topic of milk phenomics together with potential and challenges of infrared spectroscopy to predict indicators and complex traits related to health and nutritional disorders exploiting the biological bonds that exist between milk and blood in dairy animals. Purpose: To assess if PSMA PET quantitative parameters are associated with pathologic ISUP grade group (GG) and upgrading/downgrading. Methods: PCa patients undergoing radical prostatectomy with or without pelvic lymph node dissection staged with preoperative PSMA PET at seven referral centres worldwide were evaluated. PSMA PET parameters which included SUVmax, PSMAvolume, and total PSMA accumulation (PSMAtotal) were collected. Multivariable logistic regression evaluated the association between PSMA PET quantified parameters and surgical ISUP GG. Decision-tree analysis was performed to identify discriminative thresholds for all three parameters related to the five ISUP GGs The ROC-derived AUC was used to determine whether the inclusion of PSMA quantified parameters improved the ability of multivariable models to predict ISUP GG ≥ 4. Results: A total of 605 patients were included. Overall, 2%, 37%, 37%, 10% and 13% patients had pathologic ISUP GG1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, respectively. At multivariable analyses, all three parameters SUVmax, PSMAvolume and PSMAtotal were associated with GG ≥ 4 at surgical pathology after accounting for PSA and clinical T stage based on DRE, hospital and radioligand (all p < 0.05). Addition of all three parameters significantly improved the discrimination of clinical models in predicting GG ≥ 4 from 68% (95%CI 63 – 74) to 74% (95%CI 69 – 79) for SUVmax, 72% (95%CI 67 – 76) for PSMAvolume, 74% (70 – 79) for PSMAtotal and 75% (95%CI 71 – 80) when all parameters were included (all p < 0.05). Decision-tree analysis resulted in thresholds that discriminate between GG (SUVmax 0–6.5, 6.5–15, 15–28, > 28, PSMAvol 0–2, 2–9, 9–20 and > 20 and PSMAtotal 0–12, 12–98 and > 98). PSMAvolume was significantly associated with GG upgrading (OR 1.03 95%CI 1.01 – 1.05). In patients with biopsy GG1-3, PSMAvolume ≥ 2 was significantly associated with higher odds for upgrading to ISUP GG ≥ 4, compared to PSMAvolume < 2 (OR 6.36, 95%CI 1.47 – 27.6). Conclusion: Quantitative PSMA PET parameters are associated with surgical ISUP GG and upgrading. Introduction: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a subtype of breast cancer characterized by the absence of estrogen, progesterone, and HER2 receptors. It predominantly affects younger women and is associated with a poor prognosis. This systematic review aims to evaluate the current role of positron emission tomography (PET) in the management of TNBC patients and to identify future research directions. Methods: We systematically searched the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases up to February 2024. A team of five researchers conducted data extraction and analysis. The quality of the selected studies was assessed using a specific evaluation form. Results: Twenty-eight studies involving 2870 TNBC patients were included in the review. Key clinical applications of PET in TNBC included predicting pathological complete response (pCR) in patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC), assessing the prognostic value of baseline PET, and initial disease staging. Two studies utilized PSMA-ligand agents, while the majority used [18F]FDG-based PET. Significant associations were found between baseline [18F]FDG uptake and molecular biomarkers such as PDL-1, androgen receptor, and Ki67. Baseline [18F]FDG PET led to the upstaging of patients from stage IIB to stage IV, influencing treatment decisions and survival outcomes. In the NAC setting, serial PET scans measuring changes in [18F]FDG uptake, indicated by maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax), predicted pCR with varying cut-off values correlated with different response rates. Semiquantitative parameters such as metabolic tumor volume (MTV) and PET lung index were prognostic for metastatic disease. Conclusions: In TNBC patients, [18F]FDG PET is essential for initial disease staging in both localized and metastatic settings. It is also useful for assessing treatment response to NAC. The ability of PET to correlate metabolic activity with molecular markers and predict treatment outcomes highlights its potential in TNBC management. Due to their improved recyclability, thermoplastic composites (TPCs) are increasing their application across industries. The current work deals with the dimensioning, manufacturing, and characterisation of vacuum-infused TPCs cured at RT and made of non-crimp glass fabric and the liquid acrylic-based resin Elium©. Laminates with 10 and 12 layers achieved a fibre weight content of 73% measured by the burn-off process, which corresponds to a fibre volume content of 55%. Three-point bending tests revealed a bending strength of 636.17 ± 25.70 MPa and a bending modulus of 24,600 ± 400 MPa for the 12 layer laminate. Using micro-mechanical models, unidirectional elastic constants are calculated and applied in classical laminate theory (CLT) for optimising composite lay-ups by maximising bending stiffness, whilst yielding a laminate thickness prediction error of −0.18% and a bending modulus prediction error of −1.99%. Additionally, FEA simulations predicted the bending modulus with a −4.47% error and illustrated, with the aid of the Tsai–Hill criterion, the relationship between the onset of layer failure and discrepancies between experimental results and simulations. The present study aimed to investigate the moderating role of gender in the relationship between attitudes toward violence and cyberstalking. A total of 393 Brazilian's volunteers composed the sample (Age mean = 29.3, SD = 8.54, EP = 0.43, 71.2% female). Overall, the results showed that a positive correlation between all four factors that compose the scale of attitudes toward violence with cyberstalking. Gender moderated this relationship (war: b = –0.45, t = –3.30, p<0.01, corporal punishment of children: b = – 0.40, t = –2.62, p < 0.01, penal code violence: b = –0.34, t = –3.20, p < 0.01, intimate violence: b = –0.74, t = –1.93, p = 0.05). Specifically, data indicated that the attitudes x cyberstalking relation only was significant in women. A possible explanation is that attitudes can function as a psychological mechanism to justify problematic behavior, increasing the probability of cyberstalking engagement. However, more studies are needed to confirm this hypothesis. Thus, it is concluded that the objectives were met, highlighting the role of attitudes in the perpetration of specific aggressive behaviors that are more prevalent among women, assisting in the study of online violence and its specificities. BACKGROUND: The role of nitric oxide (NO) in plant stress tolerance, as well as in increasing post‐harvest quality, has been extensively demonstrated in several fruits and vegetable crops; however, the effects of its pre‐harvest application on post‐harvest quality are still poorly documented. Therefore, the pre‐harvest application of NO in red beet (Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris) plants cultivated under well‐watered and drought conditions was evaluated to assess whether it improves the post‐harvest quality of their storage roots. Red beet plants cultivated under well‐watered (80% of water holding capacity) or drought condition (15% of water holding capacity) were sprayed weekly with water (control) or 100 μmol L−1 sodium nitroprusside (SNP), an NO donor. Sixty‐six days after sowing, red beet roots were harvested, and root yield, total sugar yield, reducing sugars, non‐reducing sugars, proteins, lipids, root ashes, root moisture, soluble solids, titratable acidity, pH, vitamin C, total phenolics, total betalains, betacyanins, betaxanthins and antioxidant capacity were determined. RESULTS: While drought led to a reduction in root yield, sugars, lipids and titratable acidity, it increased phenolic compounds, betalains and the antioxidant capacity of beets. SNP reversed the negative effects of drought on sugar, lipid and organic acid contents and increased antioxidant capacity independent of stress. CONCLUSION: Pre‐harvest SNP treatment reversed drought‐induced yield reductions in beets, while boosting bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity. It also enhanced vitamin C content independently, indicating its dual role in stress mitigation and beet quality improvement. Although critical of contemporary capitalism, and the injustices and asymmetries derived from it, current conceptualisations of 'surveillance capitalism' have been developed from within the Global North, paying little attention to the effects and ramifications of this new phase of capitalism for the global periphery. This text looks at this phenomenon from the Global South, emphasising the concept not as a territorial marker but contingent on social relations, intersecting ethnic, nationality and social class markers. Its objective is to explore the applications of automated facial recognition systems in Brazil, discussing how they reinforce a disciplinary logic of social subordination and diversify forms of symbolic violence. In this context, from the perspective of digital colonialism, we aim to highlight how the operation of such systems in the Global South contests and challenges the idea of soft instrumentarian control. It analyses the manifestations of surveillance capitalism in the Global South as enablers of digital colonialism, where disciplinary and violent social effects are fostered. It describes the functioning of AFR and its extensive relationship with colonial practices. To deepen our discussion, we will briefly focus on the application in public security and schools in Brazil, describing its controversies and disciplinary logic. Furthermore, it addresses the problematisation of instrumentarian power through post-colonial and digital colonialism approaches, arguing that the effects of deploying digital technologies globally are not restricted to data plundering but also foster complex social effects, such as dependency and violence. Purpouse: This study aimed to assess the influence of the presence of synanthropic flies in food preparation environments on the transmission of potentially zoonotic gastrointestinal protozoa. Methods: Flies were captured using a glass containing water, fruits, and pieces of protein. Results: Approximately 260 flies from four different species were captured: Musca domestica (76.92%; 200/260), Cochliomyia hominivorax (17.31%; 45/260), Lucilia cuprina (3.85%; 10/260), and Hydrotaea aenescens (1.92%; 5/260). Protozoa were identified through microscopic analysis after macerating these arthropods contained in their respective eppendorfs, using two techniques, namely Mini-FLOTAC® and centrifugal sedimentation with Ziehl–Neelsen staining. The analysis revealed a concerning scenario regarding the epidemiological chain of gastrointestinal protozoa in Sergipe, Northeast Brazil. The positivity rate was 26.92% (14/52) of the pools, with 100.00% (5/5) in Aracaju, 30.00% (3/10) in Nossa Senhora do Socorro, 27.27% (3/11) in Nossa Senhora da Glória, 12.50% (2/16) in Carmópolis, and 10.00% (1/10) in Nossa Senhora das Dores. Two species of protozoa were identified, namely Cryptosporidium spp. (23.08%; 12/52) and Entamoeba spp. (9.62%; 5/52). The involvement of two fly species in the maintenance of the life cycle of these protozoa was noticeable, specifically M. domestica (27.50%; 11/40) and C. hominivorax (22.22%; 2/9). Conclusions: Counties analyzed had an human development index (HDI) considered medium; however, they still faced socioeconomic problems such as absence of sanitation systems, waste accumulation in the streets, and illegal waste disposal, which could favor the proliferation of these vectors and the spread of these gastrointestinal protozoa. As social platforms experience an influx of diverse content from users, the need to determine high-quality contributions becomes crucial, especially for educational purposes. This paper highlights the pivotal role of quality in assessing how educational-purposed user-generated content (UGC) shapes user experiences, fosters engagement, and establishes credibility. This study proposes a computational framework using a quasi-experimental evaluation through the sorting-based ELimination Et Choice TRanslating Reality, termed ELECTRE-SORT, with a dataset randomly generated from normally distributed user evaluations. Considering the diverse nature of contents, the method evaluates 16 educational-purposed UGC videos from different online media platforms (i.e. Facebook, YouTube, TikTok). These videos were categorized based on their concordance and discordance to three (3) main criteria: content quality, design quality, and technology quality. Employing the ELECTRE-SORT reveals that most UGC videos (i.e. 14 out of 16) fall into the "medium quality" category, possessing a considerable standard for the quality of educational purpose content. Their characteristics generally satisfy the quality attributes and can be used to guide the development of future relevant UGC videos. Finally, to demonstrate the robustness of the proposed approach, we presented a sensitivity analysis by designing different weight assignments to the quality attributes. Riverside populations in the Amazon are considered vulnerable due to their living conditions, social aspects, and access to health services; therefore, they may be more exposed to sexually transmitted infections. The objective of this study is to analyze knowledge about STI and associated factors in the riverside population of a metropolis from the Brazilian Amazon. A cross‐sectional study carried out in the Combú environmental protection area. The participants were individuals aged at least 18 years old living in the study area. A questionnaire on knowledge about STI was applied, in addition to another one on associated factors. Multiple binary logistic regression was performed in Minitab 22. A total of 325 riverside dwellers participated in the study. Participants with low schooling levels, incomes below one minimum wage and who had never taken any rapid HIV tests are twice as likely to having low knowledge about STI. Those who live with more people in the same household are more likely to presenting low knowledge levels. The social factors exerted a greater impact on low knowledge about STI. In the search for efficient and sustainable methods for the management of Fusarium rot in melon, the present study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of the thermotherapy, whether it's used alone or in combination with alternative products to Magnate®, in melons inoculated with two isolates of Fusarium falciforme. The effect of the treatments on fruit quality was evaluated using physicochemical parameters, disease severity, and enzymatic analyses. The in vitro experiments showed that the lowest concentration (0.0625% v/v) of cinnamon essential oil was the most effective in controlling the mycelial growth of both isolates, demonstrating comparable effects to those observed with Copper Crop® and Magnate®. In the in vivo experiments, treating fruits with thermotherapy combined with Cooper Crop® greatly reduced melon rot decreased the damage caused by the two isolates of F. falciforme and was more effective than Magnate®. This treatment produced a lower level of hydrogen peroxide in the inoculated fruits, thereby maintaining cell membranes. It contains antifungal compounds inherent to its composition and exerts an influence on the enzyme's peroxidase and polyphenoxidase, thereby inducing the defense mechanism of the fruit. Therefore, thermotherapy combined with Cooper Crop® can be used to manage melon rot as an alternative to Magnate®. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
