The current study was carried out to examine the effect of cottonseed processing and chitosan supplementation on lamb performance, digestibility and nitrogen digestion. Eighty uncastrated Santa Inês lambs (23 ± 2.2 kg average weight, 4 months old) were distributed in a completely randomized design in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement that consisted of two cottonseed processing forms (whole or ground) and two chitosan levels (0 or 136 mg/kg live weight). Higher dry matter and organic matter apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC) was achieved with the diets containing the whole cottonseed. Ether extract ADC was higher in the animals fed the chitosan-containing diet. There was an interaction effect on the ADC of neutral detergent fibre corrected for ash and protein, which increased with chitosan inclusion associated with the whole cottonseed. The lambs that received the treatment containing the whole cottonseed showed higher microbial protein synthesis. Chitosan addition increased nitrogen retention. The animals fed chitosan-containing diets showed higher microbial protein synthesis. There was an interaction effect on microbial protein synthesis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the carcass and meat of goats fed diets containing cactus meal (pectin source) replacing corn (starch source). Twenty-eight goats with an average initial weight of 16 ± 2.02 kg were confined in a completely randomized design with four treatments (the replacement levels of 0, 330, 660, and 1000 g kg−1 of dry matter) and seven replicates. The productive performance of the animals was not affected by the replacement of corn by cactus meal. The carcass commercial yield and the dressing percentage decreased with the addition of cactus meal levels in the diets. The commercial cuts, however, especially prime cuts like hind limbs and loin, were not changed by the use of cactus meal. Muscle:bone and fat:bone ratios and muscularity index of hind limbs were influenced by the substitution. The protein and ash contents of the longissimus lumborum muscle decreased while cholesterol levels increased with the presence of cactus meal. Sensory traits of goats' meat fed cactus meal in the diets were not affected. The substitution of corn for cactus meal reduced carcass yield but did not change the yield of commercial cuts or the qualitative characteristics of the meat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Intake, digestibility, nitrogen (N) balance, microbial protein synthesis, weight gain, yields of the main commercial cuts and carcass morphometric measurements were evaluated in lambs fed diets containing different levels of chitosan. Sixty Santa Inês crossbred sheep with an average body weight (BW) of 24 ± 2.2 kg were assigned to three treatments (diets containing 0, 136 or 272 mg chitosan/kg BW) in a completely randomized design. There was no effect of chitosan on dry matter (DM) intake. Ingested and retained N showed a quadratic response, with the highest values estimated at the chitosan levels of 142 and 152 mg/kg BW, respectively. Similar to N balance, microbial protein synthesis showed the same quadratic response, in which the level of 136 mg/kg BW resulted in higher synthesis when compared with the other levels. No effect of chitosan was detected on average daily gain, final weight, or carcass variables (hot carcass weight, cold carcass weight, yield of commercial cuts and morphometric measurements of the carcass). Conformation, visceral fat content and fatness of carcasses were also not altered by the use of chitosan. Chitosan improves the digestibility of DM, crude protein and neutral detergent fibre, and increases N balance and microbial protein synthesis but does not change the production performance of feedlot lambs. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of diets composed of cottonseed hull on feed intake, in vitro digestibility, animal performance, carcass characteristics and ingestive behaviour of young bulls (1/2 Simmental x 1/2 Nellore) fed in a high-concentrate system. Thirty crossbred young bulls (319 ± 12.5 kg of bodyweight, and 11 ± 0.8 months old) were assigned to a complete randomised experimental design of three diets (CH21: cottonseed hull 210 g/kg on a DM, basis; CH27: cottonseed hull 270 g/kg on a DM basis; CH33: cottonseed hull 330 g/kg on a DM basis) with 10 animals per group. The animals were kept in a feedlot for 162 days. The cottonseed hull diets had effects on DM intake and neutral detergent fibre intake. The CH21 diet reduced the DM and detergent fibre intakes (kg/day and kg/100 kg bodyweight) and increased the in vitro digestibility of DM. However, the in vitro digestibility of neutral detergent fibre was greater with the CH27 diet. The cottonseed hull diets did not have effects on animal performance or the carcass characteristics of young bulls. However, the CH33 diet reduced the feed efficiency of the animals. A cottonseed hull level up to 270 g/kg of dietary DM may be utilised as a non-forage fibre in high-concentrate diets for young bulls in feedlots. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cottonseed hulls are co-product of agribusiness that can be used in beef cattle rations, decreasing the cost of feed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of different cottonseed hull levels, display and ageing times on visual and sensorial meat acceptability. Longissimus thoracis muscle from 30 crossbred young bulls finished on three high-grain diets (210, 270 or 330 g/kg of cottonseed hulls on dry matter, respectively) were visually evaluated during 10 days of display by 37 appraisers. Tenderness, flavour and overall acceptability from the three diets and three ageing times (1, 7 and 14 days) were evaluated by 120 consumers. On the visual study, time of display (P⩽0.001) was a more significant factor than diet. Cottonseed hull level had no effect on sensorial analyses, with tenderness acceptability improving with ageing time (P⩽0.001). Results indicate the possibility of using the three studied levels of cottonseed without damaging consumer meat acceptability. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects on meat quality of crossbred bulls finished in a feedlot when some corn is replaced by glycerin and essential oils (EO) are added to the diet. Thirty bulls weighing 311 kg ± 28.8 kg (22 ± 2 months old) were randomly assigned to one of three diets: CON – Control (diet without glycerin and EO); GLY – 16.1% glycerin in dry matter (DM); and GEO – 16.1% glycerin in DM and EO (cashew: Anacardium occidentale; castor: Ricinus communis) at 442 mg/kgDMconsumed. The bulls were kept in a feedlot for 115 days and slaughtered at an average weight of 467 ± 27.9 kg (25 + 2 months old). The bulls were fed on sorghum silage, cracked corn, glycerin, soybean meal, urea, limestone, and mineral salt. Replacing corn with glycerin plus EO adding to the diet had no effect on the fat thickness, Longissimus muscle (LM) area, marbling, texture, colour, Warner-Bratzler shear force, or chemical composition of the LM. The fatty acid composition in theLMwas similar among the diets, except for percentages of myristic and margaric acids. The diets had no effect on the percentage of saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Animals fed on glycerin had a lower ratio of n-6 to n-3 in the LM when compared with the CON diet. Partial replacing of corn with glycerin and EO improved meat flavour, tenderness, and the preference of consumers. Corn may be replaced by glycerin to a 15% level of DM without any detrimental effect on the carcass characteristics or the chemical composition of the LM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Poly( p -phenylene) (PPP) and poly( p -phenylene-pyrrole) (PPP-Ppy) films were electrochemically polymerized on indium-tin-oxide glass (ITO) and platinum electrodes. Their optical properties were studied by UV-vis and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The influence of the final potential applied during synthesis (E f ) on the optical properties of PPP films was also studied. The PPP film prepared at 1.5 V showed an absorption band at 540 nm which was attributed to a p-doping process. Stable films with a similar emission band at 420 nm (blue region) were obtained after polymerization of p -terphenyl, and p -terphenyl/pyrrole monomers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plant extracts and essential oils can be alternative products to antibiotics, because several plants produce secondary metabolites with antimicrobial properties. Additionally, they may act on the olfactory system, which sends signals to the central nervous system releasing endorphins that may affect the feeling of an animal's welfare while altering an animal's temperament. This study was conducted to evaluate the animal temperament of 40 young crossbred bulls (one-half Brown Swiss and one-half Nellore) 10 ± 2.2 mo old with an average BW of 219 ± 11.7 kg. Young bulls were randomly assigned to 1 of 5 diets: control, which had no clove or cinnamon; clove leaf included to supply 3,500 mg/animal per day; clove leaf included to supply 7,000 mg/animal per day; essential oil of leaf cinnamon to supply 3,500 mg/animal per day; or essential oil of leaf cinnamon to supply 7,000 mg/animal per day. The animal temperament was evaluated by calculating the chute score, exit score, and temperament score for periods (each 28 d during 6 periods) and among diets. The data were submitted to an ANOVA using GLM procedures with SAS version 9.0. The diet and period were considered fixed effects, whereas the animals were considered a random effect. Differences between means were evaluated using a Tukey test of 5% of significance. The addition of clove or cinnamon essential oils did not alter (P > 0.05) animal temperament. The analysis of temperament score (P = 0.55), chute score (P = 0.71), and exit score (P = 0.06) did not show significant differences among the diets. The exit score was similar among the 6 periods (1.57, 1.80, 2.98, 2.02, 2.73, and 2.66, respectively); however, chute score and temperament score were greater (P < 0.001) in the first period compared with other periods. The values for chute score were 1.85, 1.40, 1.35, 1.33, 1.20, 1.17, respectively, and the values for temperament score were 2.31, 1.81, 1.67, 1.69, 1.50, and 1.56, respectively, for periods 1 to 6. The results of this study suggest that clove and cinnamon essential oils can be added as an additive in high-grain finished diets without changing the animal temperament. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
