We have used data from the Outer Galaxy High-Resolution Survey (OGHReS) to refine the velocities, distances, and physical properties of a large sample of 3584 clumps detected in far-infrared/submillimetre emission in the Hi-GAL survey located in the ℓ = 250°–280° region of the Galactic plane. Using 12CO and 13CO spectra, we have determined reliable velocities to 3412 clumps (95 per cent of the sample). In comparison to the velocities from the Hi-GAL catalogue, we find good agreement for 80 per cent of the sample (within 5 km s−1). Using the higher resolution and sensitivity of OGHReS has allowed us to correct the velocity for 632 clumps and provide velocities for 687 clumps for which no velocity had been previously allocated. The velocities are used with a rotation curve to refine the distances to the clumps and to calculate the clumps' properties using a distance-dependent gas-to-dust ratio. We have determined reliable physical parameters for 3200 outer Galaxy dense clumps (∼90 per cent of the Hi-GAL sources in the region). We find a trend of decreasing luminosity-to-mass ratio with increasing Galactocentric distance, suggesting the star formation efficiency is lower in the outer Galaxy or that it is resulting in more lower mass stars than in the inner Galaxy. We also find a similar surface density for protostellar clumps located in the inner and outer Galaxy, revealing that the surface density requirements for star formation are the same across the Galactic disc. We present radio continuum maps of 12 nearby (D ≥ 27 Mpc), edge-on (i = 76°), latetype spiral galaxies mostly at 1.4 and 5 GHz, observed with the Australia Telescope Compact Array,Very LargeArray,Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, Effelsberg 100-m, and Parkes 64-m telescopes. All galaxies show clear evidence of radio haloes, including the first detection in the Magellanic-type galaxy NGC 55. In 11 galaxies, we find a thin and a thick disc that can be better fitted by exponential rather than Gaussian functions. We fit our SPINNAKER (SPectral INdex Numerical Analysis of K(c)osmic-ray Electron Radio-emission) 1D cosmic ray transport models to the vertical model profiles of the non-thermal intensity and to the non-thermal radio spectral index in the halo. We simultaneously fit for the advection speed (or diffusion coefficient) and magnetic field scale height. In the thick disc, the magnetic field scale heights range from 2 to 8 kpc with an average across the sample of 3.0 ± 1.7 kpc; they show no correlation with either star formation rate (SFR), SFR surface density (ΣSFR), or rotation speed (Vrot). The advection speeds range from 100 to 700 km s-1 and display correlations of V ∝ SFR0.36±0.06 and V ∝ Σ0.39±0.09 SFR ; they agree remarkably well with the escape velocities (0.5 = V/Vesc = 2), which can be explained by cosmic ray-driven winds. Radio haloes show the presence of disc winds in galaxies with Σ > 10M ⊙ yr kpc that extend over several kpc and are driven by processes related to the distributed star formation in the disc. Context: The origin and life-cycle of molecular clouds are still poorly constrained, despite their importance for understanding the evolution of the interstellar medium. Many large-scale surveys of the Galactic plane have been conducted recently, allowing for rapid progress in this field. Nevertheless, a sub-arcminute resolution global view of the large-scale distribution of molecular gas, from the diffuse medium to dense clouds and clumps, and of their relationshipto the spiral structure, is still missing. Aims. We have carried out a systematic, homogeneous, spectroscopic survey of the inner Galactic plane, in order to complement the many continuum Galactic surveys available with crucial distance and gas-kinematic information. Our aim is to combine this data set with recent infrared to sub-millimetre surveys at similar angular resolutions. Methods. The SEDIGISM survey covers 78 deg2 of the inner Galaxy (-60°≤ℓ≤ 18°, |b|≤ 0.5°) in the J = 2-1 rotational transition of 13CO. This isotopologue of CO is less abundant than 12CO by factors up to 100. Therefore, its emission has low to moderate optical depths, and higher critical density, making it an ideal tracer of the cold, dense interstellar medium. The data have been observed with the SHFI single-pixel instrument at APEX. The observational setup covers the 13CO(2-1) and C18O(2-1) lines, plus several transitions from other molecules. Results. The observations have been completed. Data reduction is in progress, and the final data products will be made available in the near future. Here we give a detailed description of the survey and the dedicated data reduction pipeline. To illustrate the scientific potential of this survey, preliminary results based on a science demonstration field covering -20°≤ℓ ≤ -18.5° are presented. Analysis of the 13CO(2-1) data in this field reveals compact clumps, diffuse clouds, and filamentary structures at a range of heliocentric distances. By combining our data with data in the (1-0) transition of CO isotopologues from the ThrUMMS survey, we are able to compute a 3D realization of the excitation temperature and optical depth in the interstellar medium. Ultimately, this survey will provide a detailed, global view of the inner Galactic interstellar medium at an unprecedented angular resolution of ~30′′. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Molecular absorption lines in the line of sight to distant quasars are an extremely powerful tool to probe the dense interstellar medium and its chemical composition in intervening galaxies from low to high redshifts. The absorption line measurements of different isotopomers even allow us to study isotopic ratios, which can be interpreted as the signature of past nucleosynthesis activity, and put some constraints on the chemical evolution models.In this paper, we present the study of molecular absorption lines in front of the quasar PKS 1830-211. The absorption is due to an intervening galaxy at $z=0.89$ which is identified as a nearly face-on spiral galaxy. We have carried out a survey of absorption lines of various HCO$^+$, HCN, HNC, and CS isotopomers with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer and derived for the first time the C, N, O, and S isotopic ratios in such a distant object.This $z=0.89$ absorption system offers an unique opportunity to study the chemical composition in the disk of a spiral galaxy only a few Gyr old. Our results show significantly different isotopic ratios as compared to those measured in the Solar System or in the local ISM, indicating a poorly enhanced abundance of material processed by intermediate and low mass stars. Cometary globule CG 12 lies at the distance of 630 pc more than 200 pc above the Galactic plane. The cloud's structure could be due to the passage of a supernova blast wave. Curiously, the cometary tail points at the galactic plane which would put the putative supernova even farther above the Galactic plane than the globule. The globule contains a low/intermediate mass stellar cluster with at least 9 members (Williams et al. 1977). The head of CG 12 has been observed using NIR imaging (NTT SOFI), mm continuum (SEST SIMBA) and sub mm (APEX) and mm (SEST) spectroscopy (Haikala & Olberg 2006, Haikala et al.). The molecular material is distributed in a North-South 10' long elongated lane with two compact maxima separated by 3'. Strong C18O (3-2), (2-1) and (1-0) emission is detected in both maxima and both have an associated compact 1.2 mm continuum source. The Northern core, CG 12 N, is cold and is possibly still pre-stellar. A dense and compact core is observed in DCO+ and CS emission in the direction of the Southern core, CG 12 S. A remarkable C18O hot spot was detected in CG 12 S. This is the first detection of such a compact, warm object in a low mass star forming region. The hot spot can be modelled with a 60″ to 80″ diameter (~0.2 pc) hot (80 K ≲ Tex≲ 100 K) 1.6 solar mass clump (Haikala et al. 2006). The hot spot lies at the edge of a dense cloud core and on the axis of a highly collimated bipolar molecular outflow (White 1993). The driving source of the outflow is most probably embedded in the dense core. NIR imaging reveals a bright cone like feature with a faint counter cone in the centre of CG 12 S. The size of the CG 12 compact head, 1.1 pc by 1.8 pc, and the C18O mass larger than 100 solar masses are comparable to those of other nearby low/intermediate mass star formation regions.
